On september 6, 2005, odi received a petition requesting that the agency investigate allegations of engine spark plug ejection in certain model year 1997 through 2004 ford vehicles with triton v-8 and v-10 engines.odi received a total of 474 non-duplicative complaints on the subject vehicles where the complainant, or the dealer repairing the vehicle, reported that a spark plug detached from the cylinder and/or ejected from the engine.as of december 8, 2005, odi is not aware of any allegations where the alleged defect resulted in a loss of vehicle control, a crash, an injury, or a fatality in any of the 10,319,810 subject vehicles.in addition, odi is aware of only two incidents where the vehicle stalled without restart.information contained in the odi consumer complaints and obtained from 72 telephone interviews with complainants showed the following:(1) 99% of the complaints were on my 1997 to 2002 subject vehicles.(2) most the complainants reported hearing a loud pop while driving or upon starting up the vehicle followed by a loud, repetitive clicking or popping sound.(3) many of the complainants reported that the popping sound was accompanied by some loss of vehicle power; however, in 99% of the incidents reported, the vehicle did not stall.in the very few incidents where the vehicle did stall, most vehicles could be restarted.(4) only a small percentage of the complainants cited that they smelled gas or a slight burning smell when the incident occurred.(5) in all but a very few incidents, vehicle damage was limited to the engine.in one incident, the complaint reported that the fuel rail was damaged and replaced after one of the spark plugs ejected from the engine; however, the complainant reported that the damage did not result in any type of fuel leak or fire.in another incident, the only incident where a fire was alleged, the complainant reported that no fluid leak was observed, but that a fire resulted after the spark plug had ejected from the engine and he had restarted the vehicle and driven to another location.none of the complainants reported any damage to the vehicle hood.(6) only two complainants reported that they observed what appeared to be some drops of fuel coming from the cylinder where the spark plug had failed or on the spark plug itself; however, each of these complainants reported that there was no smoke or flames as a result of his incident.as the petitioner noted, and odi

In a june 7, 2005 letter, ford notified odi that it would be conducting a safety recall of approximately 180,000 ford f-super duty, excursion and e-series vehicles equipped with 6.0l diesel engines to correct two wiring related conditions that could result in engine stall (nhtsa recall no. 05v-270, ford no. 05s34).the affected vehicles were built between september 29, 2003 and may 31, 2004.according to ford, vehicles with the conditions may stall without warning and may or may not restart.ford will instruct owners of vehicles included in the recall to take their vehicles to a dealer to have the fuel injector control module wire harness upgraded or replaced and or have a new injection control pressure sensor connector installed.during a may 2005 presentation to odi, ford identified a number of potential failure mechanisms that could affect engine performance in various segments of the subject vehicle population, including the wiring conditions addressed by 05v-270.the wiring conditions, which both affect engine fueling, were the most likely conditions to result in engine stall.the recalled vehicles comprise approximately 43% of the subject vehicle population and account for 75 of the 113 odi reports that have a valid vin (66%).the voq complaint rate for the recall population is 45/100k while the rate for vehicles outside the recall population is 17/100k and their trend (by date of receipt) is declining.based on the analysis, odi believes ford

Twenty five of the odi failure reports are duplicative of ford complaints.twenty odi reports do not contain a vin (and may or may not be duplicative of ford reports).the 14 alleged crashes and 2 alleged injuries were all minor.submitted during preliminary evaluation (pe) 04-070, ford's response to odi's information request (ir) letter contained about 5,000 consumer reports (mors) and 8,700 field reports (cqis).ford reviewed the complaints and categorized them.the manufacturer reports shown above represent a count of unique vehicles that ford categorized as allegedly stalling due to a subject engine component ('a' category, see ford's ir response letter for further detail); some of these vehicles received multiple reports.odi has not yet confirmed ford's categorization of these reports, nor has odi confirmed ford's categorization of the remaining reports (which ford states do not pertain to the alleged defect).ford submitted nearly 19,000 warranty claims, many of which involved claims for a technical service bulletin (tsb 04-13-08) and field service action (fsa 03b05) which ford identified as potential remedies for stalling complaints.odi has not confirmed that either of these are a remedy for engine stalling complaints.several other dealer communications related to engine stall were also submitted as well as over 50 product modifications, 15 of which involve revisions to the software for the electronic engine control unit.further investigation is required and odi is upgrading pe04-070 to an engineering analysis (ea).during the ea, odi will establish and update manufacturer failure report counts, further investigate the frequency and trend of stalling complaints, and determine the scope and safety implication of stalling events.odi will also investigate ford's remedies, their effectiveness, and whether further action is required.

2004 ford f-250 sd. consumer requests assistance in helping obtain satisfactory attention and results related to recalls and repairs *tgw the consumer stated the egr valve was bad and needed to be replaced. the vehicle ran fine for awhile, until the egr valve went bad again. the fuses burned out on a consistent basis, the battery died, the fuel gauge did not give accurate readings, the vehicle stalled on several occasions and the crank position sensor failed. *jb

My 2004 f-250 diesel, 79,292 miles, has been at the local ford dealership since sept. 7th. there are so many diesels broken down, mine did not get pulled into the bay for work until the last week in oct. it is still in the bay waiting an engine as of nov. 11th. over 2 months in the shop. they changed the oil prior to diagnosing blown head gaskets and over boosting turbo, so they could not confirm if water was in the oil pan. diagnoses was to replace the head bolts, gaskets, egr cooler, rebuild an over boosting turbo, at a cost of about $3,000.00. after the heads were deemed unusable, much pitting, corrosion of the head where the cylinder imprint is located, the cost went to $7,5000. since they failed to inspect the oil for coolant, i had little alternative than to request an entire engine, at a cost of $15,500.00. i have worked on engines, and know some of the aspects of blown head gaskets. i requested assistance from ford. they said the dealership was willing to take a 10% discount. after more phone calls, they offered an additional $400.00 off after the discount. i am looking at spending $13,500.00 plus $1,205.25 in sales tax, back up to about $15,000.00 for a truck with 79,292 miles. ford motor corporation did not offer a dime. i am requesting the national transportation safety board investigate, find ford at fault for knowingly not recommending service bulletins for: 1)over boosting turbos to be replaced with the new designed ones. 2)the head bolts be replaced with the heavier, larger circumference bolts. 3)updated head gaskets. 4)stainless egr cooler so much information has been written on the obvious faults, and the corrections that could be made if ford were forth coming in disclosing the problems, before consumers were required to make huge investments on their engines. there is also a safety issue of the over boosting, and engine accelerating uncontrollably.

My ford f-250 superduty with 6.0 diesel has a hard starting issue and then the engine go from low idle to high idle causing to have to reallyaply the brakes in order to keep the vehicle from taking off. you can be just gradually taking off and then it accelerates with out warning. have had instances when sitting at a stop and the engines rpm's jump causing the truck to start taking off and if not reacting fast enough would have hit a car in front of me. i do have a engine code in the vehicle, p2285 which states injector control pressure sensor circuit low. i have seen reports that have led to safety recalls due to wiring harnesses being faulty. i called the dealer and they said that my truck was not part of the recall, however it sounds real familiar with the problems associated with the recall.

I own a 2004 ford f250 sd diesel and on 10/11/08 took a trip to sante fe nm which approx 55 miles and from what they tell me a fuel injector stuck and let fuel into the cyl thus ruining the engine. i believe that this related to the shop replacing the turbo which blew up into pieces and went into the exhaust and possibly into the fuel system jamming up the injector causing the damage. this was the second turbo with in the last 3000 miles. this vehicle has only 35400 miles i feel the engine should be covered by warranty due to miles on vehicle and also the original warranty not even a month past. *tr

2004 ford f250 superduty, 6.0 diesel, towing a 30ft. 5th wheel rv. was traveling south on i95 at 65mph and engine cuts off as if the ignition was turned off with no warning loosing power steering and brakes. truck was towed to ford dealer and repaired at customer's expense. two engine wiring harnesses was replaced at a cost of $1639.00, $104 towing, $289.00 rental car and 6 days in savannah, ga. unexpected. this has been an ongoing problem as evidenced by earlier safety recall ford #05s34. ford still refuses to do anything about the problem because the truck is 10 months out of warranty with only 51,000 miles on the odometer. safety recall apparently did not solve the problem. *tr

I own a 2004 f-250 power stroke diesel my truck has stalled numerous times that have left me in very dangerous situations such as on freeways, where highway patrol officers had escort me to the shoulder of the freeway. the dealer has replaced numerous parts on my vehicle even before i had the problem of my truck stalling. they had replaced all the recall parts which was said to have caused the stalling of the power stroke models. around 20,00 miles after i had bought my truck it would stall without warning. up to this day it has stalled a total of about 12 times. some times it would start and stall again and at times it would not start at all and had to be towed to the dealer. it has been to the dealer 5 times for them to fix it and every time they said that they had corrected the problem. they have given me flight data recorders to record the problems as it stalls. the problem was recorded and they still couldn't figure out the problem. the last time my vehicle stalled was on the 6th of july me and my family were on a vacation to yosemite towing a travel trailer when my truck stalled on a two lane highway with no shoulder so i was stalled dangerously close to opposing traffic when an on coming vehicle slammed into my mirror and broke it. it could have been alot worse in sense that my family's lives could have been in danger. i don't know what to do. all the shop foreman which i deal with at the dealer tells me to just bring my vehicle back to the dealer and they will fix the problem. but they have yet to fix this problem. i am fed up with this problem. *nm

On 10-28-05 driving on 395 in victorville i stopped at a red light, the light turned green i proceeded and at about 30 mph i heard a bang and what seemed to be a real bad exhaust leak. i was close to a ford dealer so i limped it over to them. they told me what it was and gave me an estimate to repair it... $4100.00. it blew the right front plug and coil out. plug is mia. has not been repaired yet. i am in the process of getting ford to repair it at their expense. the truck has 44,800 miles on it and was purchased new sept 2004. whether or not ford takes care on my truck there needs to be a safety recall because this is a flying projectile propelled at an extreme rate. this could be a safety problem because if someone is under the hood for what ever reason and one of those things blows, it could be fatal. or if it shoot out the fender well and hits a passing car or school buss. why should we wait for a serious injury or death, a life is worth more, we need to act now....thank you.*jb

Ford super duty trucks with the 6-liter diesel engine, generally while towing a heavy trailer uphill, experience a high rate of turbo hoses blowing off. this creates a low power situation that leaves the truck without enough power to safely exit the roadway. on two-lane highways this is a serious safety concern. i have this truck, as do three of my acquaintances. three out of four of us have had this happen. a search of ford warranty repair records will confirm that this is a very common problem. several acquaintances have had the problem more than once, in spite of ford having done the repairs. the incident below involves a friend, not my own experience. i feel that this is a safety hazard that should be corrected with a recall of affected vehicles. *tr

We own a ford f-250 super duty with a 6.0 diesel motor with a 100,000 mile warranty. twice during that period, i reported that the motor was very noisy when starting on a cold morning. finally at 99,987 miles the local dealer acknowledges that 5 injectors need replacing and & ford will replace them as soon as i prove when every oil change was made. they specifically mentioned bills & receipts. after a few weeks gathering oil change information, a service advisor suggests taking it to the selling dealer, as they would be more disposed to fix the truck. the other service advisor says that they don't want to keep the work order open any more. the selling dealer couldn't help. after a lengthy process i get to the appropriate person at ford who accepts my personal notes on the oil changes. but since the truck now has over 100,000 miles on it, ford won't do the work, even though the problem had been reported several times prior to the 100,000 mile limit. i believe the local dealer set me up so ford wouldn't have to pay for the work. *nm

I purchased a new 2003 f250 diesel had so many oil leaking problems ford bought that truck back from me and gave me a 2004 f250 diesel. i've been having the same oil leak problems with this truck. everyone i talk too, is aware of this problem that ford is having with these 6.0 diesel engines. why hasn't there been a recall? the engineer from international (they build this engine for ford) told the head mechanic at gulf breeze ford to put lock tight on the rear main seal of my 2003 truck to stop the oil leak. this seems strange to me, i thought lock tight was for bolts. i had the 2nd truck for a week and took it in and lock tight was placed on the rear main seal of this truck. it has leaked since. was back in the shop for the 3rd time, got it back and it is still leaking. another engineer from international is scheduled to look at my 2004 truck and 4 other problem trucks at gulf breeze ford on 1/24/2006. i think it is very sad, i love my truck- but i can't deal with the constant oil leaks. only have 20k on my truck at this time. what happens when there is 100k plus miles on these trucks. thanks. *nm

We purchased a 2004 f250 turbo diesel from mike brown ford on may 29, 2004 and the nightmare began. the first problem the dealership wired the keyless entry incorrectly and had to replace the wiring harness. after that the truck began to have problems with surging, and dying in the middle of the road.. the truck has been in the shop numerous times, they have replaced the computer 9 times, exchanged the egr values twice, they have slipped the torque converter, and all types of reprogrammed on the various components on this vehicle.. to date the truck runs extremely bad. my wife drives this vehicle, and is extremely scared of this truck, do to the fact that it surges and loses vacuum and shoves her into intersections at red lights or any other times she applies the brakes. the various ford dealerships are no help they constantly reprogram and release the vehicle . no more or less than 5000 miles the vehicle starts it again. we believe that this vehicle is defective and extremely dangerous to drive, seeing how you never no when it will die, or surge . we feel that this vehicle is a danger to anyone who comes in contact with .*ak
