On september 6, 2005, odi received a petition requesting that the agency investigate allegations of engine spark plug ejection in certain model year 1997 through 2004 ford vehicles with triton v-8 and v-10 engines.odi received a total of 474 non-duplicative complaints on the subject vehicles where the complainant, or the dealer repairing the vehicle, reported that a spark plug detached from the cylinder and/or ejected from the engine.as of december 8, 2005, odi is not aware of any allegations where the alleged defect resulted in a loss of vehicle control, a crash, an injury, or a fatality in any of the 10,319,810 subject vehicles.in addition, odi is aware of only two incidents where the vehicle stalled without restart.information contained in the odi consumer complaints and obtained from 72 telephone interviews with complainants showed the following:(1) 99% of the complaints were on my 1997 to 2002 subject vehicles.(2) most the complainants reported hearing a loud pop while driving or upon starting up the vehicle followed by a loud, repetitive clicking or popping sound.(3) many of the complainants reported that the popping sound was accompanied by some loss of vehicle power; however, in 99% of the incidents reported, the vehicle did not stall.in the very few incidents where the vehicle did stall, most vehicles could be restarted.(4) only a small percentage of the complainants cited that they smelled gas or a slight burning smell when the incident occurred.(5) in all but a very few incidents, vehicle damage was limited to the engine.in one incident, the complaint reported that the fuel rail was damaged and replaced after one of the spark plugs ejected from the engine; however, the complainant reported that the damage did not result in any type of fuel leak or fire.in another incident, the only incident where a fire was alleged, the complainant reported that no fluid leak was observed, but that a fire resulted after the spark plug had ejected from the engine and he had restarted the vehicle and driven to another location.none of the complainants reported any damage to the vehicle hood.(6) only two complainants reported that they observed what appeared to be some drops of fuel coming from the cylinder where the spark plug had failed or on the spark plug itself; however, each of these complainants reported that there was no smoke or flames as a result of his incident.as the petitioner noted, and odi

Twenty five of the odi failure reports are duplicative of ford complaints.twenty odi reports do not contain a vin (and may or may not be duplicative of ford reports).the 14 alleged crashes and 2 alleged injuries were all minor.submitted during preliminary evaluation (pe) 04-070, ford's response to odi's information request (ir) letter contained about 5,000 consumer reports (mors) and 8,700 field reports (cqis).ford reviewed the complaints and categorized them.the manufacturer reports shown above represent a count of unique vehicles that ford categorized as allegedly stalling due to a subject engine component ('a' category, see ford's ir response letter for further detail); some of these vehicles received multiple reports.odi has not yet confirmed ford's categorization of these reports, nor has odi confirmed ford's categorization of the remaining reports (which ford states do not pertain to the alleged defect).ford submitted nearly 19,000 warranty claims, many of which involved claims for a technical service bulletin (tsb 04-13-08) and field service action (fsa 03b05) which ford identified as potential remedies for stalling complaints.odi has not confirmed that either of these are a remedy for engine stalling complaints.several other dealer communications related to engine stall were also submitted as well as over 50 product modifications, 15 of which involve revisions to the software for the electronic engine control unit.further investigation is required and odi is upgrading pe04-070 to an engineering analysis (ea).during the ea, odi will establish and update manufacturer failure report counts, further investigate the frequency and trend of stalling complaints, and determine the scope and safety implication of stalling events.odi will also investigate ford's remedies, their effectiveness, and whether further action is required.

Dt*: the contact stated upon starting the vehicle the oil pressure dropped and the engine died. the vehicle was towed to an independent repair shop where it was determined the oil pump and the lower intake manifold gaskets failed. the oil pump is made of aluminum which influenced the integrity of the pump, and caused the pump to wear out prematurely. the dealer was alerted of the problem, prior to the independent repair shop making the repair. updated 5/10/2006 - the vehicle leaked coolant which caused the vehicle to overheat but the temp gauge did not indicate that the vehicle was overheating. the coolant also flowed through the egr valve which caused lose of power. *nm

Diesel smell in the cab of a ford f350 truck with 6.0 engine. this is the second instance of this in this truck. both have been covered by warranty, but the first time was in may of 05 and the second time was feb 06 is this going to happen again. the smell is sickening and if you do not open the windows eyes water, feel tired, sick to stomach, all not good for driving down the road (people really look at you like you are nuts when its 5 degrees outside and you are driving around with your windows open). this time it has been blamed on the exhaust manifold, the first time it was what they called the down exhaust pipe. i believe that there is a bigger problem which has to do with the 6.0 engine. too much pressure for the exhaust. the other problem is with the radiator hose. i have 46700 miles on the truck and the radiator hose has to be replaced due to rubbing on the power steering gear box, ford will not cover this under warranty, even though they have come up with a new hose and new part number to stop this from happening. i have not been told if they are replacing the hose with the old style or the new style. *nm

Own a 2004 ford f-350 sd. for years have had surging problems when driving. have taken into shop and they cannot determine reason. it happens while stopped or driving, surging and trying to jump because of the surge. turbo charger has not been replaced
06/15/200430001
Since new vehicle purchase, my ford f350 diesel p/u experienced engine surging (200-250 rpm) while stopped with the automatic transmission in drive. the surge was significant enough to lurch the truck forward with the brake applied, such as at a stoplight. in several cases, i almost rear ended other vehicles before applying the brake hard enough to stop the truck from moving forward. i later learned to anticipate the surge using the brakes to minimize movement of the truck while stopped. my surging problem was confirmed on multiple occasions by technicians during test rides, but they could not duplicate the problem in the shop. in all cases, the first step was to reflash the ecm which masked the problem for several days while the truck relearned my driving habits and prevented a diagnosis. the engine had to be operated at full temperature in road conditions before the problem developed. in the shop, idling the engine to warm up to normal operating temperature was not sufficient to replicate the problem. ford dealers made multiple attempts (10 or more) to diagnose the problem: replacing injector control pressure (icp) module, egr valve, and icp wiring connectors to no avail. the problem was finally diagnosed and corrected, out of warranty at approx. 44,500 miles, by replacing the engine wiring harness. i found a dealer who was willing to send a technician on a test ride with me and hook up an onboard computer laptop that identified the problem before reflashing the computer ecm. a number of surging complaints from other owners of ford f350 are posted in online forums documenting similar circumstances and frustration. the incident date provided is the approximate date of the first occurrence. in my case, the surging occurred on a near daily basis, although intermittently, for 41000 miles of driving without any resolution from ford. the engine wiring harness was replaced in feb 2009 which corrected the surging in my truck. i paid a $100 deductible. *tr

My 2004 ford f-360 truck would cut out and try to quit running when slowing for a stop sign or red light. thought it was bad fuel, fuel filters. had recalls done (gfr). problem began again and while my daughter was pulling a 16 ft. trailer with one horse loaded, began to emit white smoke from the exhaust. the truck apparently overheated but the temperature gauge did not indicate such. truck was towed to dealer and they were 99% sure it was gfr again, but it was not. the problem is much bigger. apparently it will cost $5-10,000 for repairs. the mileage is 104,000, just out of warranty and i did not purchase any extended warranty. i then had the truck towed to another dealer who said he could fix the truck for a lot less. but, his estimate was just as costly as the first estimate. the truck remains at the dealer as i refuse to pay that much to repair. *tr

I have a 2004 f-350 superduty 4x4 [6.0 diesel]. i drove through water the depth of the stock tires. the engine ingested water by way of the intake. i was advised by the ford dealership that the incident destroyed the engine. the air intake is located at the front grill. i believe this is a flaw in design, causing easy access for the water to enter from the air intake. i am getting no assistance from the ford company or my vehicle insurance in covering the damage, which is estimated at $ 15,000.00 dollars. i am not sure if this type of problem is occurring often. *tr

The pickup truck keeps running very rough and lurching forward while in drive. the truck has almost completely died on me several times. even when you have your foot on the brake it will lunge forward and has almost caused me to hit the car in front of me. i have taken it to the dealer 5 or 6 time over the past several months. they have done a upgrade on the computer and replaced several valves/parts. every time this mystery problem keeps coming back. it seems to surface at it's worst when the temperature outside gets warmer, above 50 degrees. ford has basically been no help and seems to be stumped over the problem. i have spent at least $500 on a warranty item that has not been fixed. after reading other complaints, it seems as if i'm not the only one with this problem. this problem needs to be solved before it gets worse and causes accidents. *jb

Incident occurred in the afternoon, the temp was about 70 degrees. the truck was loaded with my family (5 including myself); we were traveling over a hill at about 50 mph. a sign indicated a 6 percent grade. on the way up the hill, at about 2000rpm and about 45 mph we noticed a large amount of black smoke being expelled from the tailpipe. there was no hesitation on power output at that time, then coasting down the other side of the hill the engine shut down. fortunately we were able to narrowly avoid the traffic ahead with what little brake action i could apply. when the engine was started again, the check engine light came on. after being taken to the dealer the sensors were replaced on the turbocharger and other undisclosed work was done to the engine. lately the truck has been mimicking these symptoms.

On 16 april 2005 , i took my f-350 turbo diesel dually in for 10,000 mile service ( vehicle had 9400 miles) also asked to have left speaker checked and scheduled an appointment for the recall on the transmission pins replacement. upon completion of 10,000 mile service i noticed that the vehicle was making a thumping sound when decelerating on the road . went back to the dealership and asked that they check to see if everything was back in place , reason for this was that they replaced the left speaker and did not put the door molding back on when they gave me back the car. service person road in the vehicle and stated that they knew what the problem was and that it was listed on the ford engineering website, they printed out the memo stating it was an known problem and had to do with the air filter vibration and that no adjustment was necessary. upon leaving the dealership again for the third time the noise started to increase in volume and then would not accelerate , i returned and had the diesel mechanic test drive the vehicle , the vehicle showed no indication on dash panel and showed rpms increasing but vehicle not accerating and continuing to make thumping vibration noise. mechanic stated i was not going anywhere with this truck . i have a loaner from the dealership and as of today april 25,2005 my truck is still at the dealership for repairs.*ak

All of the following is documented on fords computer system through magnussens in newark, ca. june04, started with a rough idle problem took my 2004 f350 back to dealer. did a reflash seem to fix for a while. progressed to rough and searching idle. approximately 9 times back to dealer, each time either clear check engine light or replace parts, approximately 7 or 8 days out of service from june till late august, last time replaced the entire turbo assembly. each time just replaced parts, never did the dealership or ford corporate have a definite answer to what caused the problem. each time code p0299 was on the check engine. between the 2 and 9th incidents, the vehicle stalled unexpectedly in the middle of a downhill coasting turn almost resulting in a crash each time. total of 5 times, last occurrence of stall was first time vehicle presented any problems since turbo replacement on two thursdays ago on my way to work. after i got in to work i called ford support and my dealership and started a replacement process through what ford calls the dsb dispute settlement board. i am not comfortable driving this particular unit any more and fear i might not be able to stop the vehicle safely one of these times it stalls and may cause injury to myself or another. i have done a lot of research regarding others who might have had this problem and it led me here. *jb

On 01-06-2008 i started to have significant problems with my 2004 ford f-350. it has just over 41,000 miles on it. it was smoking and had significant loss of power problems while at low road speed. problem would clear once truck was >40 mph in speed. took it to local ford dealer on 01-07-2008. their investigation showed that the egr valve was sticking. the valve assembly had to be replaced. the service person stated that this problem is common enough that they are keeping a couple of extra egr valve assemblies in their stock room. i asked if there was any indication of a product recall in the works. he said that he did not know of one but that one might happen in the near future and that i should keep my invoice just in case. my question/concern(s) is this: how often or frequent should an egr valve stick and/or fail? if their failure rate is high (1 failure per vehicle every 50,000 or less) then shouldn't there be a redesign and recall to improve the performance and safety? *tr
