This investigation was opened on certain ford pickup trucks and vans to evaluate the effects of a valve stem ejection (with rapid air loss) and a slow leaking valve stem on vehicle handing.during the investigation, odi evaluated over 1,100 complaints and warranty claims, conducted vehicle dynamic testing on a subject vehicle with the failure mode replicated, interviewed owners, and examined complaint vehicles in the field.the results of the test program indicates the effect of a valve stem ejection on these vehicles is easily controlled. further, with a population of almost 900,000 vehicles, having two to four years of exposure, odi is aware of only 3 minor crashes and is unaware of any injuries.the small number of crashes relative to the large population of vehicles is consistent with the testing which was performed. therefore, this investigation is closed.see the attached report for full technical details.

Consumer received a recall notice from ford regarding the tires, valve stem #10v046. consumer was not present during the inspection of the vehicle. consumer was informed by the dealer that it was up to ford's specifications. in september the inside rear tire went flat. consumer was pulling a trailer and didnt realize there was a flat. the tire side walls were destroyed. because of the damage, there was no way to determine the cause. in july of 2002, two of the inside rear tires went flat simultaneously. consumer was pulling a trailer at the time and had been checking the tires every 70 miles. upon taking the tires to the local dealer, it was determined that the cause of failure was the valve stems. the dealer informed consumer that he was unable to comply with the request to put heavy duty truck valve stems on the full set because of the design of the rims which would not allow for the bolt type valve stems. consumer feels ford should reimburse for the replacement valve stems and tires. *jg
