On november 29, 2012, ford motor company (ford) initiated customer satisfaction program 12n03 to extend warranty coverage terms for repair of engine idle rpm surge caused by throttle body deposits in all model year (my) 2005 through 2007 ford freestyle, five hundred and mercury montego vehicles.the program extends the coverage for up to 10 years of service or 150,000 miles from the warranty start date of the vehicle (all vehicles are eligible for the program through may 31, 2013, regardless of mileage).dealers will repair vehicles exhibiting the condition by removing and cleaning the throttle body and reprogramming the pcm with software containing an updated idle speed control strategy.according to ford, some of the affected vehicles may experience momentary, intermittent engine idle rpm surge (idle flare) when stopped or during low speed driving maneuvers such as in a parking lot or driveway.unstable idle speed control (dips and flares) around the target engine speed (700 rpm) can occur in vehicles with deposit build-up in the throttle body when the system adjusts engine speed in response to changes in engine load, typically from power steering application or air-conditioner compressor cycling.idle speed control logic is only active at vehicle speeds below 3.5 mph and when the accelerator pedal is not applied.ford testing of a vehicle with a worst case throttle body measured a maximum idle flare of 1360 rpm lasting approximately 1 second, which ford indicated was consistent with system design to limit vehicle speed and acceleration in idle control mode.ford indicated that the test vehicle was held in place with normal brake effort and that vehicle speed remained under 4 mph without the brake pedal applied.in addition to throttle body deposit accumulation, symptoms associated with the condition may include check engine lamp illumination and diagnostic trouble codes (dtcs) p0505, p0506 or p061b.ford attributed the surge condition to changes in idle air flow resulting from the progressive buildup of deposits in the throttle body from normal positive crankcase ventilation (pcv) system operation.this condition was not adequately compensated for in the original powertrain control module (pcm) calibration.ford issued a technical service bulletin on august 15, 2011 (tsb 11-8-5), releasing an updated powertrain control calibration for vehicles with cvt transmissions.on october 19, 2011, ford issued a second bulletin (tsb 11-10-21) superseding tsb 11-8-5 and including updated powertrain control calibration for vehicles with 6-speed transmissions.prior to ford issuing the tsb

The airbag warning light comes on and then the entire gauge cluster (i am talking about the speedometer, the temperature gauge, the gas gauge, and the tachometer) shuts off completely and comes back on randomly. ten days after initial incident the airbag warning light came on and then the gauge cluster shut off completely and stayed off. the speedometer is the most important part. i have seen several articles online about the same topic, and the belief is that it is due to faulty soldering on the back of the unit.

Initially car would stall when cruise control was turned on and speed was above 55mph. after returning to carmax for repairs car continued to stall without the cruise being turned on. then car began accelerating with foot on brake when changing gears from a dead stop. after 3 repairs by ford was advised issue was not any of the prior items fixed it was the throttle body and it was a known issue but no recall has ever been done on it. *tr

In multiple incidents, on hot summer days, the car has suddenly accelerated (with no foot on the accelerator) when backing out of parking spaces and sometimes when put into drive right after the sudden acceleration in reverse. it has required rapid, firm braking to prevent the car from hitting other vehicles. about a week after the problem started with this car, it started to happen occasionally with my other ford five hundred (a 2005 model with a little less mileage). a separate complaint has been filed on that vehicle. research online has revealed that hundreds of ford five hundred owners have reported this issue and that the throttle body is the likely culprit. *tr

At random, with the foot on the brake and not on the accelerator, the car will rev up and lunge forward (or backward if in reverse) violently. the distance it moves is enough to put other cars and pedestrians in danger, especially when it does this several times in a row. this problem is most noticeable in hot weather with the a/c turned on. *tr

While driving the car rpm gauge was moving upward even though i was still at steady speed. when i slowed and stopped it appeared to continue to lunge forward. i was able to control since i had some distance from the vehicle in front of me. by the time i reached my destination i was afraid that it had a mind of its own. it settled when i tried to park for it then cut off. there have been numerous events when the car lunged forward or cut off while driving and even when i put the car in reverse. i had three (3) motor mounts replaced and new battery along with the safety sensor. it costs more to repair than general maintenance. i see why they stopped making this car. its dangerous! i am now in the process of getting the throttle body replaced which may not be under warranty. this car should be recalled or we should be compensated for repairs related to this problem. *tr

I have a 2006 ford five hundred. i purchased it used in jan 2012. my car continually lurches forward while sitting still. the air conditioner will not cool while idling if it is hot outside. i have also had issues with losing all power while driving down the freeway. i will be driving and all gauges will bottom out and then rev up to the highest. my rpms will drop down, the gas gauge will go to empty and at night all electrical lights and dashboard notifications will light up and then go off. i cannot use the air conditioner, radio or anything else when this happens. this is very dangerous and i believe ford should be held accountable for not fixing this issue sooner! someone is going to get into a fatal accident because of this issue!!! losing all power and speed and then having the vehicle lurch forward is dangerous! #scaredmomof3babies! *tr

While pulling out of a parking space i had my foot on brake and put car in reverse. when i let my foot off brake the car lunged back and the rpms went up without my foot touching the gas. after finally fighting it to get it out of the parking spot and not hitting the car behind me i put it in drive. once it was in drive it did the same thing. my foot was on the brake and it was lunging forward with my foot off the gas pedal. this happens all the time in parking lot and from a dead stop. it lunges and jumps at stop sign, red lights and low speed. *js

Engine surged unexpectedly causing temporary loss of control. this has been happening occasionally for several weeks while in drive at idle or when shifting into drive. i have found this issue to be widespread when checking forums on different websites. this is an unsafe condition that exists for many consumers with this model. a recall is needed so this dangerous situation is addressed. *tr

The car had begun surging hard both in reverse and forward. it happens when stopping and when first putting it in gear. i've been fortunate to have not hit anything yet, but i am fearful that it might happen. i'm seeing a lot of other people having the exact same problem in several forums and websites. i do not understand why a recall has not been issued for this problem as it is obviously a serious manufacturer's defect.

*tr

1st issue: when the vehicle is at a stop light, the car feels like it's going to jump forward even while the brake is depressed. i worry about rear-ending the car in front of me. then when the car is in park, the car begins to rev or idle high as if the accelerator has been pressed. 2nd issue: while in park or driving at low speeds of 30-35mph, the instrument panel quits working and the a/c stops as if the car was turned off. it'll then come back on and will continue to come on and off. the bad thing is that the hazard lights won't even work. there's no warning. we have already had the throttle body repaired last year in 2011 when we found out it's a common problem but not covered under warranty nor a recall issued. *tr

2006 ford 500. the car will suddenly surge at idle...it also surges during gear shifts from park to drive and park to reverse. if you do not have your foot firmly on the brake pedal the car will suddenly surge forward. this can lead to damage of the vehicle or injury to a pedestrian. arfc website has 125 reports of this problem. seems to get worse around the 60-65,000 mile range....conveniently out of warranty. taking car to dealer today for evaluation and repair.

I have owned my 2006 ford 500 for 5 yrs and have had and issue for the last 2 yrs. while braking, the car will lurch and i mean really jump forward (or also in reverse) while rpm's surge/rev extremely high causing me to press very, very hard on the brakes at times slamming down to keep the car from going out of control by itself. sometimes the car will stall when the rpm's are dropping down. this happens at different times of day and seems to be more often when it is warmer. it has happened while slowing into a parking space, backing up, pulling away from stopping at a light or stop sign. it is completely random and you never know when or if it will happen.i am always extremely cautious when there are people around when i slow down to less then 15mph or back up. there is something mechanically wrong with this car. it should never be in control of moving by itself when the brakes are applied. it is a very scary situation and can happen multiple times a day. i have taken in to dealership and explained these symptoms but they just say they don't know what it could be and will have to check it out while it is happening. i would like ford to take some responsibility as this seems to be happening to most 500's and it is well known by many but not acknowledged by ford. this could be a very serious situation if someone is within 15ft when the car goes out of control all by itself and the driver is not ready. please watch out if you are next to a ford 500.

After starting car in garage and idling for about 30 seconds, i put car in reverse to back out of garage. the engine rpm's increased significantly, and the car shot backwards until i applied the brake. the car stopped and engine rpm returned to normal. this has hapened several times. i am the second owner of the car, and i purchased the car from a private party with about 104,000 miles on it. in speaking with the previous owner, he also had problems that he attributed to the cruise control whereby the vehicle sped up without pressing on the gas pedal. the original owner purchased the car from gentry ford in ontario, or, and had every service performed there. i, too, have returned the car to gentry ford for every service, but have not discussed this problem with them, the previous owner did tell them about the problem he experienced.

I had just bought a 2006 ford five hundred with about 131000 miles. drove great from the dealership then later that afternoon the throttle all of a sudden went dead. i was going 65 mph on the highway and had no throttle. i went online and researched the car and there have been numerous (upwards of 100+) people who have the same complaint. i just wish ford would recall the part so it's not going to cost me an arm and a leg to fix.

Ford 500 lurches severely at random times while the engine is engaged. this happens most dangerously at high speeds, due to driver's inability to control vehicle adequately to defend against potential crashes or control speed during turns. this has caused problems on the snow and ice here in alaska because uncontrolled acceleration reduces traction. also occurs at low speeds, which is more easily controlled through braking, but requires extreme caution if engaging vehicle when pedestrians or other vehicles are near. it has surprised and scared me on many occasions since i first purchased this car a month ago, but the reason i am writing this is because i had a scary incident today when pulling out of a grocery store parking lot (pedestrians in front of me when it suddenly jumped as soon as engine engaged). took it to the mechanic and diagnostic check says issues with fuel delivery system. the mechanic stated that after researching the issue this is a very common problem for this model and that it is most likely the throttle body, and says the car should not be driven in its condition. it is one of the scariest issues i've ever had to deal with. after reading more about it on the internet this evening it seems that this issue is very common and hundreds of people have had similar scary incidents with this car that they have reported online. if this many people are writing about it online, presumably there are thousands more who are having the same problem and do not have the resources or know how to report the issue.

The vehicles warning indicator light of a wrench lit up indicating transmission/throttle body service. had previously had transmission inspected and were no problems. the car will thrust in direction car is in gear of such as when car is in reverse it will thrust and lunge backwards also in drive lunge forwards. it also is enhanced when the cars heater or a/c is running. have researched and many, many people have had similar problems and complaints.

The instrument cluster checks normal on most start-ups, but unpredictably all systems light up showing failure of abs, air bags, traction control, electrical systems, see a mechanic, cruise control and speedometer quits working. the warning lights may stay lit for 2 to 200 miles. and no speedometer. auto zone and my mechanic are baffled and frustrated after checking battery charging circuit connections and grounds. its obviously not safe driving without knowing your speed or if there is a major hazard looming-----like fire.

As i was backing out of a parking space in a parking garage the enigine reved up and jumped hitting a beam in the garage. upon impact the engine was still reved so i immediately turned the engine off and back on. the engine continued to rev up and the check engine and yellow wrench illuminated. the car was towed to a dealership in which they replaced the throttle body and the car was driven to a local body shop for repairs. total cost over $1200 yesterday, september 7, 2011, (mileage 108000 and speed from 0-40 mph) as i was driving to work the check engine light came on. each time i would stop the engine would rev and when i would accelerate it would jump and rev. not wanting a repeat of the last accident, i took it to a mechanic near work who stated that the throttle body needed to be replaced again along with the engine mount. total cost $1076 after resaerching this problem it seems that it is a typical issue with this type of vehicle. most have included that they are fearful that they will be injured or injure someone else in a accident.

5/20-7/18/11 car accelerated quickly and lurched backward with brake on while backing out of parking space; wrench light came on. error codes were for alternative fuel control module and throttle actuator control system. sometimes car lurched forward while braking, engine revved, car shuddered, and wrench and/or check engine light came on. started happening almost daily. very scary and unpredictable. mass air flow sensor and egr valve were replaced. had same issues 2 days later. throttle body and vacuum hoses were replaced. contacted ford and they refused to cover parts and labor because car was no longer under warranty. last repair was done 30 days ago and i've had no more problems, but it cost me $1600 to repair.

While putting the ford five hundred in reverse the car briefly accelerated and lunged backwards barley missing another car. thinking i might had hit the accelerator i went on to where i was headed. as i was leaving my destination once again the car just took off while in reverse. the car then gave a wrench fault on the console. i looked up the issue in the manual and it said it was a throttle control issue. i spoke with the dealer today and they said it was a throttle body problem. upon investigation i find that this is a recurring issue. if someone had been within 3 to 5 feet of my auto i would have hit them.

No injuries...yet. however, our 2006 ford five hundred accelerates for no apparent reason at all. it does it when going forward or reverse and will stop by either tapping the accelerator pedal or turning off the car and restarting it. i will be bringing the car in for service this week, but just want to bring this problem to your attention as it seems other individuals have reported the same situation.

Car lunges when coming to a stop or backing. took car in for an oil change and brake job. when i picked my car up, it was running rough sometimes stalling when letting off the accelerator. in addition to spontaneously lurching forward, the engine will race when put into park. i have come close to hitting other cars, parking garage walls, etc due to this problem. my dealership now is telling me the throttle body is not within the proper parameters and needs replacement. after some research this seems to be a common problem.

Starting since february 2010. my car lunges forward whenever at a dead stop. when shifting to drive and reverse. i have had to have my foot on brake and even almost had an accident while parking and hit the wall. went to dealership and first they said it was my engine mount that was causing it. then went again because the problem still occurred and they said i needed a new battery. then they claimed it was my air filter which is a lie. i called the ford headquarters and all they can do is take down when i called and what it was about. they are no help whats so ever so what is the point of them even existing if they cant help solve the problem. they claim each dealer is independent and that they can advise that i go to a different dealership. i have wasted a good deal of time and money. luckily i was smart and bought that premium extended warranty. i still have spent close to over $400 on repairs. each time i went i had to pay a deductable of $100.00. the battery i went to sams club to get because the dealer wanted $140 but i got mine for $75. they advised to get my throttle body clean and that was $95. they said i need to have my transmission flushed which is another lie. i didn't get that done because i only have 60,000 miles on the vehicle. the transmission fluid was as red as can be and is still good for probably another 40,000 miles. the point is ford knows about the problem and they do not want to fix the problem it apparently is happening to tons of folks out there. they need to just fix it because even though i had my throttle body cleaned the problem still comes back here and there. i just hope that no one gets killed and then ford will finally get this right. i plan on seeing if i can get some legal help and will explore that avenue because i get my oil changes almost ever 3500 miles and i follow all the manufactures service policies. i do my part as a customer and they havent done there part as the company that made the vehicle.

I own a 2006 ford fivehundred. from the very beginning, my car has lunged/surged forward and backwards. i called ford corporate office on three various occasions to file a complaint and ask for a repair. each time i was told that ford was not responsible for determining the problem. on sept. 27, 2010, at a stop light, the car surged to 3000 rpm's and i was scared. i kept my foot on the brake, but i thought at that speed, the brake may fail. i was going to turn the car off, but instead, i turned the air conditioner off and the surging was reduced to 1000 rpm's. this is a very dangerous situation. what is ford waiting for? the car needs to be recalled and repairs made, before a major accident and law suits ensue.

On jan 8, 2009, i had traveled approximately 1050 miles from oklahoma to ohio. while in ohio, 6 inches of snow had fallen, and the roads were slick with snow and ice. in preparing for my return trip on jan 11, the traction control and abs warning lights came on, and there was a significant change in control and braking in the vehicle. upon driving further, the transmission warning light came on, and the vehicle went into reverse with a huge bang sound and vibration. the vehicle's cvt transmission would not change gears in drive when the transmission light was illuminated. upon turning the vehicle off, and back on, all lights would go off, and come back on within 5 minutes. after the 6th restart, the check engine light came on as well. the transmission light, after a few restarts, did not come back on. however, the abs, traction control and check engine lights stayed on for approximately 650 miles. after that time, all lights went out, but the rpms went from 2000 to 3500 on their own while the vehicle was in cruise control on a flat road. that corrected itself about 100 miles later. upon taking the vehicle to a dealer on my return, they told me that since no lights were on, and the vehicle was now acting normally, they could not duplicate the problem. my factory warranty expires in 14 days, and i am not sure if i'll be able to duplicate the problem to the dealer by that time. the service department blamed the malfunction on the cold weather and the snow, but the awd vehicle with traction control was, to my knowledge, manufactured to deal with snow and cold weather. one does not need awd, traction control or abs during dry, warm days. *tr
