On november 29, 2012, ford motor company (ford) initiated customer satisfaction program 12n03 to extend warranty coverage terms for repair of engine idle rpm surge caused by throttle body deposits in all model year (my) 2005 through 2007 ford freestyle, five hundred and mercury montego vehicles.the program extends the coverage for up to 10 years of service or 150,000 miles from the warranty start date of the vehicle (all vehicles are eligible for the program through may 31, 2013, regardless of mileage).dealers will repair vehicles exhibiting the condition by removing and cleaning the throttle body and reprogramming the pcm with software containing an updated idle speed control strategy.according to ford, some of the affected vehicles may experience momentary, intermittent engine idle rpm surge (idle flare) when stopped or during low speed driving maneuvers such as in a parking lot or driveway.unstable idle speed control (dips and flares) around the target engine speed (700 rpm) can occur in vehicles with deposit build-up in the throttle body when the system adjusts engine speed in response to changes in engine load, typically from power steering application or air-conditioner compressor cycling.idle speed control logic is only active at vehicle speeds below 3.5 mph and when the accelerator pedal is not applied.ford testing of a vehicle with a worst case throttle body measured a maximum idle flare of 1360 rpm lasting approximately 1 second, which ford indicated was consistent with system design to limit vehicle speed and acceleration in idle control mode.ford indicated that the test vehicle was held in place with normal brake effort and that vehicle speed remained under 4 mph without the brake pedal applied.in addition to throttle body deposit accumulation, symptoms associated with the condition may include check engine lamp illumination and diagnostic trouble codes (dtcs) p0505, p0506 or p061b.ford attributed the surge condition to changes in idle air flow resulting from the progressive buildup of deposits in the throttle body from normal positive crankcase ventilation (pcv) system operation.this condition was not adequately compensated for in the original powertrain control module (pcm) calibration.ford issued a technical service bulletin on august 15, 2011 (tsb 11-8-5), releasing an updated powertrain control calibration for vehicles with cvt transmissions.on october 19, 2011, ford issued a second bulletin (tsb 11-10-21) superseding tsb 11-8-5 and including updated powertrain control calibration for vehicles with 6-speed transmissions.prior to ford issuing the tsb

At very low speeds (example in a parking lot) trying to park the car it will surge really hard even when foot is on brake.. makes parking very dangerous.. i almost hit a person and almost wrecked into another car another time.. when shifting from park to reverse with foot on brake the rpms go waay up and it is as if someone is flooring the gas pedal.

I put my car in reverse to back into a parking space and the car engine accelerate as if it i was on the gas pedal going 50, except i was on the brake. if i am sitting at a red light the car engine accelerate i noticed that the rpm needle will go up to 3 sometime 4 if i am not careful to keep control of the car it will take off so i have to be careful to keep my foot on the brakes. *tr

Vehicle lurches or jumps when shifted into gear. the brakes need to be held down firmly otherwise the car has a chance to smash into anything that may be in front or behind you when shifting into drive or reverse. have come close to hitting pedestrians and stopped vehicles at stop signs and traffic lights. this condition seems to be getting worse and ford doesn't seem to be doing anything about it. have seen numerous complaints on line saying the same thing. should someone be killed or an accident occur before this problem is addressed? i hope not. *tr

While pulling into a parking space and my foot off the accelerator, the car will suddenly surge forward. it seems to happen more frequently when the weather is hot. while shopping today in 90+ temperatures today, the car accelerated on more than three occasions as i pulled into parking spaces. the car has accelerated on at least two occasions when i have stopped for pedestrians. fortunately, i had my foot on the brake. today, i came very close to crashing through my garage cabinets when the engine surged as i pulled into the garage and was inching forward to clear the garage door. *tr

I was driving through a parking lot and was pulling into a space to park. i did not have my foot on the accelerator, as i was just easing to a stop. the engine surged and my car lunged forward, almost hitting the vehicle parked in front of me. this has happened multiple times since, at one time almost hitting a pedestrian. i have to keep my foot on the break constantly and hope i can get the car stopped before someone or something is hit, and pray i don't have to use the accelerator at the low levels of speed. *tr

For several months car has been lunging forward without my foot on the gas. a couple weeks ago while pulling into my driving way it lunged and the car ran into my concrete steps causing 3,500 worth of damage. this is very dangerous and could have been one of my daughters. i really hope you take this seriously because once lives are lost you can't get them back. i just want ford to fess up and to take responsibility for this problem, so i may get it fixed and not kill or injure anyone.

There is a chronic recurrence of the engine stalling, jerking, idle speed loping, in low gear for this vehicle. at start up and the engine is cold there is little to no problem. however, once the normal operating temperature is reached (per the readout gauge), and upon applying the brakes to come to a stop, and as the transmission downshifts the engine goes dead or stalls, after re-starting and at idle, the idle speed, per the indicator, fluctuates back and forth from about 500 rpm's to 900 rpms. placing the gear shift in the drive position causes the car to jump prior to acceleration. at this point when taking off the car jerks forward. it smooths out after increasing the speed, but prior to each stop the fluctuating begins again.

At a stoplight with the brake on the engine revved up and the car jumped forward about 20 feet before i could stop it. at the next light the same thing happened. at my final destination approximately 2 miles away my son (who was with me the whole time = i was taking him back to college) told me to let the car run to see if it would do it again. with the car in drive and my foot on the brake (hard) it revved up 2 more times in less than 2 minutes to at least 1500 rpm and was very difficult to hold back. i took it in to the dealer the next day and they replaced the throttle body at a cost of $800. after calling ford and reporting the situation they refused to document this or make a case number until i told them i knew there was a technical bulletin on this according to the dealer. they gave me a case number 1401813351 but were rude to me and could not answer if the replacement part addressed the issue and has been fixed. i do not know if it will happen in the next mile, next 100,000 miles, or never again if they will not say if replacement parts have corrected a problem. if a car or pedestrian were in front of me when this happened i would have had an accident without doubt. this car has a safety problem and the incident happened on nov. 27, 2011.

We have had the car for about 3 years now, the car surges a little when it is put into gear (drive, reverse), more recently the car has begun to surge and or lunge sometimes dangerously when the car is stopped. (not all the time, randomly) i have researched this issue on the internet and i have discovered that its not covered under any ford warranty. i haven't found a definitive solution for this issue either.

My husband and i purchased a 2007 ford five hundred last september. i am reluctant to call the dealer about the problem we are having with the five hundred, because we are not on good terms. the reason for that is they think we traded our 2000 mitsubishi in with a bad transmission. that is not true. we never had any tranny problems with our car, and we did not want to trade it in, but because we didn't have a down payment, they said we had to trade it in. it was not our idea to trade the car in, and we knew nothing about the tranny being bad. they took an attitude with us after that happened, and a couple of minor things that needed fixing on the ford five hundred, they would not fix. now we are driving in a dangerous vehicle, and from what i found out, there was complaints made in october of last year about the throttle, and we were never notified. we just started having problems with the car lunging forward, and backwards, and accelerating on its own. we almost had two accidents because of the car surging like this. the car is dangerous, and we have pulled up many complaints about these cars, and people complaining to their dealers, and they had to know about it. they say last october was when complaints were made and dealers were notified , but they never let us know, and the car would have been under warranty then. we should have been notified that there was a problem. please let me know what you can do. here is a copy of just one of the complaints i found below.

When backing out of a parking space, car will lunge back a few feet. just last week, i was backing out of a parking space at a store and it lunged five times before i took it out of reverse and put it into drive. it lunged again forward and then i was able to drive it home. if my foot is not on the brake, the car will continue to lunge unless it is stopped either by braking or hitting something. when in a drive-thru, with foot on the brake, when i release the brake the car will lunge forward. after researching the problem, people have stated it is a problem with the throttle and it could cost 500.00 + dollars to repair. it is a factory mistake that ford is not taking responsibility for. i was advised to file a complaint with nhtsa just in case an accident occurs because of this problem. we are taking the car in to see if we can afford the repair on our own next week. if it is the throttle and does cost as much as others have claimed, we will not be able to afford the repair.

Purchased a new ford five hundred in 2007. have kept up with all regular maintenance. after putting about 20,000 miles on the vehicle, i started having a problem with sudden acceleration. i would come to a stop at an intersection, mailbox, or drive-thru and let my foot off the brakes and the car would jump -- accelerate on its own. my foot would not even be on the gas pedal. i took it to the ford dealership and was told that the transmission had to be reprogrammed. i specifically asked could it be a problem with fuel system and was told no. i had the work completed but the problem persists to this day. i have had several near misses with rear end collisions. finally as i was entering a parking space, the car accelerated on its own and hit a post in front of the parking space.

I purchased a ford 500 07 in march of 2010. prior to the 60,000 mile warrenty ending, i took the car back twice for a surging problem going from drive/reverse. the first time the shop could not find a problem. the second time the service mgr. and daughter did a test drive. right off the bat the car surged. he called me and told me to bring the car back one morning so he could keep it all day. i could not do this at the time, this is my only means of transportation. on 10/2/10 while backing up in the emergercy lane on the interstate. my car acceleratated on it own, while moving backwards. i hit the break the accelerator went to the floor. i lifted my foot off the break it took off again. the rpm hand was going crazy. i had no control. the car went into a spin, i ended up in the ditch while hitting another car. luckily we are still alive.

Tl-the contact owns a 2007 ford five hundred. while the contact was driving less than 5 mph in the reverse position, an unexpected increase of acceleration occurred. immediately, the brake pedal was engaged and the vehicle came to a stop. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer on two separate occasions where they were unable to duplicate the problem and the technician stated the failure could possibly be related to the air conditioner compressor which was replaced. the failure continued and the vehicle was taken back to the dealer and they informed that the failure was contributed to the throttle body. the vehicle had not been repaired. the failure mileage was unknown. js

2007 ford five hundred operating on the ma. turnpike... stepped on accelerator to kick into passing gear to pass a trailer truck and accelerated to app 75 mph...... lifted foot off accelerator, but car stayed in passing gear and accelerated further..(to app 90 mph before episode ended) applied brakes and fought the acceleration while trying to brake... tried pushing the off switch for cruise control (even though i was not using cruise control to no avail..... tried lifting gas pedal up with toe of my foot...no results.... have no floor mats in the car that might have tangled...... finally stomped the gas to the floor several times in a rapid succession and accelerator let up..... after changing my shorts, tried to duplicate the episode.... but it did not get stuck again even though i stomped it into passing gear several times.... it has not happened again since then (1 day ago or app. 300 miles of driving).. *tr
