| Got my daughter her first used car from a dealer, which i should had gone with her to check it out first since an 18 year old would most likely not know anything much of a car besides driving it. you would think buying from a used dealer is safer than buying out in the street. so when we took it out of the lot noticed engine tremble and suspension noise, (too bad no lemon law on used dealer selling this type of cars). after diagnose the engine produced a catalytic convert malfunction code. also after inspection the focus needs all four suspension struts. a month later that other suspension noise resulting almost in a accident from a back wheel shaking which came from a back wheel bearing which hub nut was just about off, which would had caused the wheel to come off. i did a search and this are all common problems with the focus and i believe there was a recall for a back wheel issue. the bad news is that after a while of the recall being issued it is voided or only specific vin numbers are considered effected ????. the latest encounter is the steering column locking and the key not being able to unlock it. the worst part is that the ignition cylinder would have to be drilled out to be replaced (very interesting since is the first time i seen that). i'm noticing from my experience with ford vehicles that although in my opinion there engine and transmission are a bit better than most vehicle, is the little parts that one have issues with that ends up costing the most, just saying. so why is it that with many complaints and known issues from previews model years ford has not attempt to resolve the issues. i bet there would be many other people out there complaining if only they new they can complaint, the question is, is anyone going to do something about it!!! *tr | |||

| Daughter bought the 2000 ford forus on 03/01/2011 from a dealship in wichita, kansas. in april 2011 the rod went through the side of the engine, nearly causing an acident with 3 other cars on the highway between wichita and towanda, kansas. tow truck took the car to the dealship and was told we would be responsible for 1/2 the cost of another engine and labor, which was over $4,000.00 (our share would be over $2,000.00). still having to pay the loan on a car that is not running and full coverage insurance, cause the car is on a loan through the dearlership. i've called a number of times to the dealership about this problem with no help. i've tried to find out if there was any recalls on the rods going though the engines on this year, make and model of this car. no luck. i looked up the kelly blue book value of this car, in fair condition is only: $1,375.00 for trade-in-value. please help if you can!!!!! | |||

| The early years ford focus, 2000 - 2002 are experiencing a catastrophic engine failure that can occur at any time. this problem involves the valve seat on the intake valve of the cylinder head. the valve seat cracks, breaks apart and falls into the cylinder destroying the piston, head and block cylinder wall on the single over head cam (sohc) 2.0 liter engines - vin 'p'. it is such a wide spread problem that ford motor company is running out of parts. auto part stores know of this problem. piston ring manufacturers know of this problem. both of which are selling parts at very high volumes related to the engine failure. machine shops all know about this problem and state that it goes further back to the ford escort model also. salvage yards know about this problem and are getting 10 phone calls a day for used sohc engines. salvage yards are selling any and all sohc engine as soon as they get them in in vehicles. owners who choose to replace their engines with 'used' salvaged engines are encountering the dropped valve seat problem again as the replacement engines fail at approximately 100k miles also - just as the original had failed. ford motor company knows of this problem and is providing the option of installing a salvaged engine. cost for installing a salvaged engine with unverifiable miles has been quoted at $1250 for the engine, $2500 to $3000 total for installation. this problem is greater and larger than the 'fuel pump' safety issue and the 'brake' issue. the valve seat can and does break at any time - this problem is showing up in later years also, 2003. *tr | |||

| 2000 ford focus se, purchased new 04/2001 --- 06/02 - car died on fathers day, replaced battery with one from auto zone; ?/03 - at service call for recall of harness wiring, complained about led lights flickering, no problem found; 10/05 - car died, towed to ford, battery replaced; 12/06 - service at ford, complained about led lights flickering again, no remedy; 06/07 - car died, towed to chrysler dealer (my employer), could not locate prob, charged battery, 06/07 car died, replaced battery; 06/07 car died, towed to chrysler - replaced alternator; 09/08, ignition locked/replaced; 02/09 car died, towed to ford, replaced battery; 06/09, electrical system warning light illuminates at 35-40 mph. positive battery cable insulation melted. service at dodge (employer) - reroute positive cable directly to bolt on connector to battery, problem continues - carried to ford, they advise alternator is bad and must be replaced. ---- 9 years, 5 batteries, 3 alternators, problem not corrected. dealer continues to treat the symptoms, not cure the disease. something is causing this to happen continuously. numerous focus owners at least through 2003 experience same issues. service advisor admitted to me that they replace a lot of batteries and alternators in focuses and that it seems to be inordinately high numbers. other problems with this car include 3 sets of inferior brake pads (finally had a good set installed by an independent mechanic) and cracked motor mounts causing intense vibration especially when engine is cold. seeking remedy for electrical issues - considering consulting attorney to start class action lawsuit. concerned about potential fire hazard. my daughter was driving this car for past 2 years, finally knuckled and bought her a great chrysler pt cruiser for her personal safety. i am not in a position to acquire another vehicle for myself and must continue to drive the focus until otherwise capable of another vehicle. will never buy ford again. *tr | |||

| 2000 ford focus-air intake manifold (failure). symptoms, rough idle, stalling, causes computer control system to make engine run lean furthering the problem. on the lower side of the air intake manifold is what appears to be an air intake control valve. the material disintegrates over time which allows excessive air into the air intake manifold, causing the oxygen sensor to detect to much oxygen and sending the computer a signal to increase the amount of fuel. the engine speed at idle decreases to around 500 rpm and stalls. at higher speeds, the engine runs rough and has substantial lack of power and misfiring. dealer examined vehicle and tried to defraud me by encouraging me to replace numerous items at the same time. inspection cost was excessive, so i took the vehicle home and raised the hood to investigate further. an air sucking sound was heard and it was discovered this air stop or valve had disintegrated. the way it was discovered was by following the sound to the part and touching it to confirm a vacuum into the engine. when touched the part disintegrated into my hand. i proceeded to temporarily seal the leak with duct tape and the idle increased to normal speed and the vehicle quit stalling. thereafter, i went to my local kragen auto supply and picked up a rubber hose cap about 3/8 inch diameter internally. then i took the duct tape off and forced the rubber hose cap over the air valve which sealed the leak. since then i have not had any problem. the dealer recommendations would have cost me around $1,000.00 in repairs. the actual repair cost me around 0.35 cents. fords original equipment part should be on recall because it should not disintegrate. i can understand wear and tear and mechanical failure, however i can not and will not accept product disintegration as acceptable in current automobile technology, and neither should our governments national transportation and safety administration. *jb | |||

| Engine malfunctioned: ford focus se year 2000. purchased from omar car sales in fremont (510)-770-0107 i thought it was the battery. when i came out of raley's at about 4:50 pm, i could not start my car. it was making a clicking sound only. (1) just had major work some of the timing belt, a motor mount, and spark plugs, all new ford parts were used as replacements. the car had been in excellent condition beforehand. i had only purchased the car a little over a year ago from omar car sales for $6,000.00, and it was running fine till 3 months ago, when the timing belt went then got fixed in one week. one minor problem with an ignition switch was found when i 1st bought the car, also very minor. (2) butch's automotive inc in fremont, 510-793-9883 found problem, (the valve seat inside the engine collapsed and failed, pistons came down, ruined my entire motor including oil on parts in process) i reported it to nhtsa, they said i also needed to contact the dealership, and manufacturer of which i did. nhtsa said that if the dealership didn't do anything, to file a complaint. i spoke with jose in service at fremont ford within 24 hours. he said contact the manufacturer, but the manufacturer tried to claim that there weren't any recalls. i think there are, and if not, i would like a discreet recall started. (3) butch said the cost of repair will be $5,200.00 for all the damages engine wise, plus a re-built engine being installed. i would like all costs reimbursed to me, as this was a safety hazard. had this happened on the freeway, i might have died when other cars crashed into my stalled vehicle. i had recalls done at fremont ford, and my recalls were up to date. butch says he was able to get a newly rebuilt ford engine to newark , ca dealership, and my malfunctioned engine was returned to that dealership. | I purchased my 2000 ford focus se from merlin motors in saskatoon. production date - may 2/2000, stock no. pp24941, r.o. no. 155631. i believe this car was previously owned by someone in british columbia. here is a chronological breakdown of repairs. april 17/01 - took car in because driver mirror vibrated badly when driving - so badly that i could not look into it, it was shaking that much. also, the trunk would not open from the release inside the car. parts were ordered at this time. vehicle kilometers- 32854. june 19/01 - they checked for driver mirror vibrating when driving and replaced driver side exterior mirror. the also checked for trunk not opening from the release inside the car, they replaced the trunk stop and adjusted. vehicle kilometers- 35222 june 20/01 - they checked for power steering leak and replaced steering rack and set toe. vehicle kilometers- 37782?? (this is obviously an error - i know i did not drive 2, 560 km in one day!) i also did not complain about the power steering and don't recall why my car was in there at the time. sept 21/01 - they repaired rattle in right front going over bumps, tightened all assemble bolts in front end, removed right caliper and rotor, lubed all bushing, adjusted front splash shields, found tie rod bolt loose and tightened. they also fixed molding on window belt, which was loose and checked inside rear view mirror and found it flawed - part on order. vehicle kilometers- 43170. nov 3/01 - we were driving in saskatoon when engine started to boil. we knew this because of steam coming from the hood, all gauges in the car read normal! we took car to merlin - they could find nothing wrong with the car after their checks, and told us to bring it back if it happened again! work order for this date states: customer saw steam coming from under hood, antifreeze pooled on engine, gauge read normal, steam coming from overflow tank - fill with a/freeze, pressure test for leaks, no leaks found. | |||

| On october 10th 2003 i was driving in the ford focus 2000 wagon from new york city to cleveland, oh, about 500 miles. it drove well for about 300 miles, but started to choke and sputter on hills, like it was about to stall. i was hoping i would make it to cleveland for repairs, but it stalled out on me going 65 miles an hour 60 miles outside of cleveland. i was able to restart, and limped into the nearest town and found a ford dealer in ashtabula oh. he said it was the fuel filter and repaired it. it drove fine for the rest of journey into cleveland. but i then headed to new york city a few days later, and again after 200 miles, it started sputtering on hills. then outside of binghamton, ny it stalled again. i again restarted, and terrified of a fatal accident, i called for road side assistance from verizon wireless. they got a tow truck to get me to a garage, but they were closed. the next morning, i waited for them to diagnose the problem and repair the car, but they were unable to replicate the stalling problem. i drove the rest of the way into new york city terrified, and almost stalled out at the foot fo the george washington bridge. it was after 5:00 pm so the dealership was closed that i bought the car from. so i am planning to have them look at it. but they said that unless they can see the problem, they can't fix it. i also called ford and they said they never heard of this problem. which i later found out is a major problem with this car, and there is an active investigation underway at nhtsa. i am hoping to get by under the lemon law in ny, but fear that the dealership will claim there are no problems with my car. thank you for listening to my complaint. | |||

| Let's see, where shall i begin. within month or two of purchase of 2000 focus sedan it was back in the shop for the front a panel trim. it took 3 times to finally get that right. also less than 5 months after purchase, windshield had to be replaced due to a stress fracture (was a 1-1.5 hairline crack which appeared in windshield). the windshield has since been replaced again. while adjusting the rear-view mirror the windshield cracked around the base, apparently from slight pressure of mirror. and just recently, august 2003, i've noticed water drops flying up from above the dashboard. not sure if windshield is leaking around the bottom base or maybe a.c. haven't had it checked yet, but it will be in the shop this week for other problems i haven't mentioned yet. it was in shop in late 2001 or early 2002 for throttle problems. while the car was sitting still the engine would race between 2.5 and 3000 rpms. fortunately i never used the cruise control during that time. late 2002 the trunk lock mechanism apparently broke preventing the trunk from shutting properly. it wouldn't latch at all. i have yet to have the wiper motor cover recall fixed. and on different occasions the fuel gauge has read empty, no matter how much fuel you have in the tank. and just when you think nothing else can go wrong, it happens. me and my wife were shopping this morning on labor day saturday. we got in the car and i went to start it. my key somehow would not go into the ignition completely, no matter how hard i tried. we eventually call our triple aaa insurance and arrange for a locksmith to come and take a look. he looks at it a second and declares what we fear the worst. our focus is the 7th focus this month he has seen with the same problem. he said that the ignition would have to be replaced by ford. i believe that this should be a recall. i will never buy another ford. | |||

| Nov 2002 took to dealer the car was purchased from, told them it was sluggish and gas guage didn't always register. i thought at that time it was maybe the transmission. i was told nothing wrong, could not duplicate problem. took to neighborhood dealer for the same problem replaced fuel filter. had all this work before warranty expired in feb 2003. never notified about possible fuel pump. june 27th started car and engine died. it then wouldn't start again for about 30 minutes. i took it immediately to my neighborhood ford dealership. who told me it was the fuel pump and strongly suggest not to drive the car until repair. so the car was left there for repairs. after listen to the service people at the dealership, it came to my attention this was a common problem. i started to invesigate this myself and find 67 cases listed on the nhtsa website. the common statement was that the while driving at any speed and without prior warning vehicle dies out. on car hitting a park vehicle and several near misses on the highway. 2000 ford focus engine sputters and then stalls at high speeds. my concern is that i have heard and read hundred if not thousands of these fuel pump failures and after many nice but ineffective answers from ford i feel that someone will be injured seriously or die to these faulty and possibly dangerous fuel systems. my dealership previously worked on this telling me fuel filter and i feel know well it was more and like the fuel pump. it seem that the gas guage not registering is a clear sign of problems with the fuel pump. | |||

| Problem started in mid-february 2003. when the fan speed level for the heat is turned to the 3rd position the fan noise drops down & then a very acrid burning odor is emitted. can not put the level higher than the 2nd level due to the burning (wire?) odor and concerned that a wire is burning. our mechanic told us that we needed a new heater switch which he proceeded to order but was told by a ford dealership that the item is backordered due to a high demand for this part. we still don't have the problem fixed yet & now am concerned about use of the air conditioner. i have spoken with a ford dealer who says there isn't a recall or tsb, i have called the nhsta, & i've checked the alldata.com website with no luck. i suppose, given the problems we continue to have with the rear tires, this could be considered a minor problem, however i don't think so. my only other comment is that i definitely do not feel safe driving this vehicle at highway speed due to the vibration of the wheels & how wobbly they feel. we have to replace tires often because they cup. any information you can give me or any direction you can point be would be appreciated. thank you, cindy l. emery | |||

| I purchased a 2000 focus se on june 5, 2001 with 23,000 miles. i was told that i would be covered under the original factory warranty 3yr./36,000.i also purchased an extended warranty from the api company at the cost of $1,069 to cover 6yr./60,000.i thought i'd be protected. wrong ! the vehicle always had horrendous brake dust but the worst was yet to come. in december 2002, my husband and i were in the process of moving and began to notice a rough idle. well, it's cold in buffalo, ny so we thought it just needed more time to warm up. by early march we experienced stalling problems and the check engine light was on. after stalling at 45mph we had enough. the car was taken to basil ford. with only 32,000 miles on it we were informed that the cylinder head was cracked and the original warranty ran out on 1/29/03. ford wanted about $1,700.00 to replace it. well, we thought if ford wouldn't cover the repair that the api extended warranty would. another error in judgment ! api said there was carbon in the cylinder and they wouldn't cover. finally, after threats to leave the car at the dealer or seek legal advice to remedy, basil replaced the cylinder head for $400.00. who ever heard of a cracked head at 32,000 miles ? we had only put about 10,000 miles on it ! also the keyless entry on the driver door would only work on occasion and the key never did work on the trunk (told the lock needed replacement) which we would have to pay for if we wanted fixed. since the inspection was coming up in june 2003 and the brakes and rotors would probably need replacement just like all focus's do, we traded in the car to avoid the money trap. that car was the worst hunk of junk i've ever heard of! i paid $10,500.00 for the car in june 2001 with 23,000 miles on it and had a hard time getting $5,000.00 as a trade with 33,000 miles in may 2003 ! it was the biggest rip off of my life also i lost out when i cashed in the worthless api warranty. | |||

| Since at least april 2003 the back right passagner side window will not rise or lower nor will the lock on the door lock from that seating position. the driver only can do it. while in nm driving from ky to az, my 2000 se began to lose engine power. as i drove at 70 mph the engine began to stall, as if no gas was getting through the engine and the car began to die. i was able to safely pull to the side of the road; turned the car off for upwards of 2 hours, start the car again and drive. this happened 5 times from nm to az; over and over again. i called the 1800 ford roadside assistance number and was told since my car was out of warranty they would not send a tow for me. a commercial trucker was nice enough to follow me to the next town to a ford dealer. the service advisor at the dealership offered to look at my car the next day around noon, as he had 6 other focus owners in his shop with the same complaint and he had no idea what the problem is. i decided to press on to az while driving under 55 mph on i-10. the car sat in my garage for 3 weeks before i drove it again. it is still doing it's drive and die and i am concerned now more than ever with the number of recalls on this vehicle what the deal is. | |||

| I purchased a ford focus in april 2000. at that time i opted for the 3 year/36000 coverage. later in that year i was involved in the rear wheel bearing recall and brought the car in for repairs. last week my left rear wheel bearing went-and as the mechanic said "i'm suprised your wheel didn't come off". i contacted ford customer service and was informed that since i was no longer under warranty protection (vehicle has 40,000 miles) i was no longer covered, and the customer service representative proceeded in trying to offer me extended coverage for my car. i feel that since they "tried" to fix the problem and didn't -that they should still be resposnsible for the repair. there is no reason a wheel bearing should fail after only 40,000-especially when i had between 12-15,000 miles on the car at the time of initial recall/repair. | |||

| My 2000 ford focus has had problems starting 2 months after i purchased it. it's been in 6 times for excessive brake noise and or squealing. the door hinges were squeeking and had to be replaced due to misalignment..it took 5 times to determine this. weather strip molding has been replaced due to falling apart around the headlights. the cd player/stereo was replaced with a new factory model when cd player would not work properly. the "new" model was replaced yet again due to coding seen and no numbers in the window digital area. the fuel pump was replaced after stalling more than 50 miles from home...still does not run up to performance. fuel area reworked again. would not start due to battery cable. ford needs to discontinue this model until they can fix the problems it has with it. they also need to get all focus models off the road, they are safety hazzards. | |||

| Have had nothing but trouble with my focus the brakes wore down while i was on vacation and i was stuck driving for a bit on metal to metal....which ruined my rotor.....then the battery after almost 3yrs. has caused my car to not want to start twice......each time i have had to clean off the built up acid on the battery so that a clean connection can be made.....the paint keeps on chipping, my anteena has become frayed, just recently my car's steering wheel locked up on me and the key wouldn't turn in the ignition......it is in the shop as i write this.....and from what i have heard i am not the first person to have had a problem with the cylinder.......the car seems to be slugish when on the inerstate.......the focus is a dangerous car and ford co. needs to do something about it..... jeremy | |||

| These are the probelems with my car. it is only 8 months old, yet this car has had repeated problems. the first major problem is with the brakes. they continually squeak and i was told by ford that it was due to a safety issue. the brakes and pads were replaced yet the problem has continued since. i have also made numerous complaints and had the breaks deglazed and serviced many times only to have the problems continue. the next problem is with the ventalation. the engine strongly smells of burning oil/fuel. this problem was checked and fixed three times, but this problem also continues. the smell is so strong inside the car that passengers now refuse to ride in the vehicle. the smell is also very strong from out side the car. the third problem with the vehicle is with the driver's side door. the lock and latch are very tight and are some times imbossible to turn or open without exessive force. the door hinges are also stiff. this is a lot of friction in the hinges making lots of noise and not allowing the door to move smothley. the last problem i am reporting is with the suspension. this problem has been fixed more than 5 times and it is still a very big problem. new parts have been put in and the squeaking and humming is still very loud. there are also loud clanking noises coming from the suspension.*ak | |||

| In april of 2000 the first problem was encountered when the car lost electrical power and went on auxillary power- i was towed to the dealer and the alternator was found to be the cause of the power failure - both alternator and battery were replaced with no further problems to report as of yet. second problem encountered while idling i noticed the fan was not turning on to cool the engine down- i brought car to dealer in january of 2002 where i was told that there was a problem with the fan relay switch which was replaced to my satisfaction. no further problems have surfaced with cooling system. thirdly and most troubling is my experience with the automatic transmission. i had noticed the transmission slipping in early 2002 (jan) and had the dealer look at it- they told me the fluid level was low and added a quart and test drove - immediate afterwards changed gears great - as time went on i noticed it again- i made an appointment with the dealer- before the appointment the car started worsening until complete transmisiion failure occured. the car was towed to dealer wher it was worked on for about 3-5 days - a new transmission was supposed to be installed (4/2002). 2000 miles later and 4 months same problem surfacing again!! i have an appointment in the morning hopefully the problem will be addressed. i believe this problem is a safety concern and an accident waiting to happen- so far i have been lucky enough to escape injury or death. there are over 60 incident reports listed on nhtsa 's web site for transmission failures and i believe someone needs to look into this matter further. i am considering legal options as well as a simple yet effective way of voicing my opinions through never purchasing a ford again!!! | |||

| The 2000 ford focus was not idling correctly. it would act as if it were going to die after deceleration. i have had three mechanices look at it including a ford dealership. there was a service bulletin on their website regarding a valve sticking. it requiree d replacing the head at a cost of $1500-$2500. ford had since redesigned the engine so this problem will not happen again with future models. i would like to ask for an investigation or a recall. instead of ford fixing their designed defect they were making money off the repairs for something the owner could not prevent nor does it mean improper maintenance. *ak | |||

| I drove a 2000 focus zx3 for 3 years without a single problem. on march 2007 (90000 miles) the car stalled and died completely in the middle of a california freeway. after 5 min i was able to restart the car and drive to my mechanic (not a ford dealer). computer analysis showed a faulty mass air flow sensor. he replaced it ($450). two days later, the car stalled again in a residential area (20 mph and full tank of gas). the car restarted and i drove back to same mechanic. he didn't find anything wrong and suggested i should drive to a ford dealer. they replaced the fuel delivery module at no cost because of ford recall #03n01. after that the car stalled (and died) again while pulling out of a parking lot (5 mph and full tank). ford technicians drove the car for 150 miles while hooked up to a flight recorder and found nothing. i drove it for 20mi with a flight recorder and it stalled right away. i tried restarting it and it stalled again (4 times in a row). i was able to record the data using flight recorder. for the first time the check engine light was on (code p1237). the ford dealer inspection all the electrical wires looking for a faulty connection ground. after re-wiring they test-drove the car again. they think the car is ok now. this has been my third week without a car. i was renting a car in order to go to work (paying to go to work). i can't afford to spend more money on more surprises. i have been stressed emotionally and financially. even if the car is ok now, i don't feel safe driving it (or any other ford). at this point i decided to sell the focus to the same ford dealer. i'm complaining about the ford focus and ford in general (as a corporation and a brand) for allowing such a flaw to be sold to the general public. i have been very well treated by the service department at the ford dealer. *jb | |||

| Recently the vehicle started to idle erratically sometimes dying, i took it to the dealership and they told me the bosch platinum spark plugs were not compatible with ford vehicles and sold me new spark plugs. the problem seemed to go away but about 30 days later it started again. frustrated with the dealers performance i checked the vehicle myself and found that the crankcase vent between the engine and firewall had a rubber elbow and hose that were collapsing after the vehicle started. i removed them and found the elbow had a hole and the hose seemed to be structurally weakened. i replaced both and no more problem. *jb | |||

| For several weeks, when i would go to start my ford focus (2000 se), i would feel a small amount of turbulence coming from the engine. today, as i delivered my newspaper route, the engine had a loud unrythmic tick to it. by the afternoon, when i attempted to turn on the car, the engine shook violently and made a terrible 'clanking' sound that echoed loudly from within the chambers of the engine. i have not attempted to restart my vehicle, because my mechanic warned that he has worked on three other focus models that have had the same problem. two of those vehicles experienced an exploding of their engines. my vehicle will cost anywhere between 500$ and 1000$ to repair, but even then there is no guarantee that it will be remedied. the mechanic believes that the problem exists within the fourth chamber's bearings, which - if out of alignment - causes the shaft to lose centrifugal force (hence the violent shaking). *nm | |||

| Took my 2000 ford focus to dealer for 30,000 mile service, and to have them fix whatever was causing the engine light to blink and the car to idle roughly, and to fix the problem with the car engine turning off while driving. the service was done and the fuel filter recall would fix the engine problem. was told the computer did not register an error code and that the rough idleengine light problem was likely fixed as a result of the fuel filter replacement. the next morning, the engine light came on and stayed on and the car was still idling rough. drove straight to the dealer and was told that my car had excessive carbon in the cylinder head and that the cylinder head might need to be replaced. they would try to clean the carbon, which they did and billed me $205. don't understand why such a problem wasn't noticed the day before when i spent over $500. the problem is that this car has less than 30,000 miles on it and it makes no sense that not only do i possibly face having an expensive cylinder head repair, but i have already replaced the front pads and rotors (at 25,000 miles) and have had numerous recalls. i have consistently followed the scheduled maintenance plan and am concerned that not only is this car defective, but that it is unsafe. what are my options and what can be done to ensure focus owners that the car is safe? is there some way to make this car reliable? it has some really great features (like the interior roominess), but it is proving to be a major disappointment.*ak | |||

| My car has a constant bad vibration that intensifies on right turns, going up grades, and over bumps. i have taken it to jim click ford in tucson, az for a total of three times. each time they come up with a different excuse and it never fixes the problem. i have been told at first it was, my tires, i replaced all four tires with top of the line michelins, then i was told that my fuel pump was going out and that is the cause of the vibration, now it is the coils. not one of these has fixed the problem, i am still waiting on the pump to get in stock at jim click, and they did replace the coils at a charge of $370.88. in addition to the vibration it sporadically tries to stall and hesitates when turning. i also have my taillights, and back up lights constantly burning out, i have replaced them 3 times and the last time i had jim click replace them. (the back up light, passenger side is out again) i was also told the first time i took in my car to jim click ford (before the fuel pump recall), i needed to replace a failing fuel pump and that would cost $680.00 to replace. (parts and labor) i could not afford it and took it out of their shop, i then brought it in after the recall and they told me that the fuel pump was not the problem that it was the coil and they could not replace the fuel pump since it was not failing. i then fought it out with them and they said they would replace the fuel pump when it came in stock late january 2004. they did replace the coils and the engine check light was on when i brought it in and that is how they determined that it was the coils. they fixed that problem and i got my car back and guess again the engine light came on the very next day and the vibrations are getting worse. i am starting to feel that this car is a lemon my car only has 64,000 miles and has so many recalls and service bulletins it is scary. *cb | |||

| Hi, i own a 2000 ford focus and it has been nothing but trouble. i purchased the car brand new in 2000 and have had it in the shop so many times. i have had my rear passenger side window mechanism replaced by ford, then personally replaced the driver front window mechanism and the driver back mechanism due to cable breaks. i have had it in with the radio 3 times and it still does not work correctly. i have had to have the brakes replaced, the ignition block replaced, the struts and shocks. the trunk release has never worked. now it keeps breaking down on me if i drive for more than 1 hour non stop. this weekend i went to san antonio from corpus, it died on the highway 3 times going to sa and coming home 4 times & how safe is that! ford said they cannot do anything for me unless it is messing up when i bring it in while it is acting up, however it always happens when i am away from town. they told me that if they hook it up to the machine it will not tell them anything. also, on several occasions my accelerator has stuck and i cannot brake, i have to put the car in neutral and press on the brake hard while the rpm's are still revving and pull the emergency brake, the first time this happened i was pulling into a parking spot and went over the yellow divider. is there anything i can do? *la | |||

| Leaking water into passenger foot-compartment. isolated problem to plastic cover that sits beneath windshield, and is mostly accessible with hood open. the problem is that the plastic comes away from windshield due to some buckling in the plastic. fixed problem by applying pressure to plastic to bend it back to shape so it snagged-up closer to windshield. not seen problem since. mastic to adhere plastic to windshield might be an option to other people. the fuel gauge sometimes refuses to work. found this to be case when key is put into ignition and key-turned to start engine was done too quickly. if entering key into ignition and then turning key each click, giving each click a half-second, then gauge appears to be more reliable. when engine goes into slow-idling state, engine idles very erratically and is not smooth. sounds like only some of cylinders are firing. this has only started to occur today and since reading comments on this website, i'm concerned. have tried adding fuel-injector-cleaner to fuel tank, awaiting results of that. the trunk would not close. the problem here was fixed by removing the locking assembly from the trunk-lid and simply dowsing the mechanisms with wd40 and then bending some spring-loaded components.. there are 2 moving components in the lock. first is shape of a loop that you can easily move with finger/screwdriver. this component locks onto stub that you can see when opening trunk. the other component is hidden within casing and moves in front of other component to hold it in a locked position. problem was with this component. problem was component had somehow gotten bent and not free to leave casing and block other component. bending this to a position freeing it of casing fixed problem. engine lacked power when under load when accelerating, vehicle would shudder and decelerate instead of accelerate. problem resolved when ford dealer replaced spark-plugs plus leads and a full engine tune-up. $230 plus but fixed problem. *la | |||

| Constant squeaking noise when the brakes are applied. i've already replaced the rotors, brakes, brake pads, and drums on several occasions since buying this focus about 3 years ago. also my steering wheel locked on me one day in april of 2002 the key would not fit into the ignition to start the car i have no idea why this would happen from one day to another. i had my vehicle towed to the ford dealership and they didn't know what the problem was caused by. they said that they needed to update the lock cylinder. luckily i purchased the api extended warranty that cover the car for 100,000 miles. so the cost of the work done for this was $427.20. all but $50.00 of which was my deductible was cover by this warranty. the problems didn't stop here. i also have had to get the cd systems that came installed in the car replaced. the was a constant clicking noise with the cd player and 90% of the time the cd's wouldn't even play. i called the dealership and they said that they could replace it for me but that it wouldn't be coverer by the warranty so i would have to pay for it out of my pocket. i ended up having a new system installed but not from the ford dealership, i took it to circuit city. recently this month july 2003, my car has been staling and shutting off at stop signals and stop light also just shut completely off on the freeway thank god no accident occurred. i called the dealership to report this problem also my check engine light would come on and off several times and they said to bring it in and they would check the engine light but that i would have to pay $165. 00 just for them to check the light and it would be more $$$ to repair what ever problem it was. i was fed up by then. *ph | |||

| Early on i had issues with stalling but just thought it to be weird for the car would turn back on..would power down while driving then i could start it over again. wasn't until recently it became an issue that worried me when i was on a trip and it did it 3 times in a row and it wouldn't start on the second time but then did on the third try. i had been pulling out into heavy traffic when car just died.. everything went dead. tonight my engine light came on and i started searching the net looking for reasons why when i came across the stalling issues with the ford focus 2000. i have also encountered multiple problems with the car over the years and until recently have stayed under 50,000 miles. i also had the locking of the ignition which was replaced by the dealing but last time i took the car in for the rear bearings they told me my car was not one of the 21 states it had issues with. i see they have now included that to go into all 50 states. at this point i am really scared to drive this car anymore and was just getting ready to do an out of state drive which i am putting on hold. i've had other issues that are nothing compared to the car stalling out in traffic.. it just stops.. steering freezes brakes lock.. its a mess and a danger to my child's life and mine. the latest problem of stalling plus the gas pressure seems to be an issue.. i press on the gas and it seems to sputter as if the car wasn't getting enough gas and almost dies.. i thought maybe my clutch was going out but that doesn't seem to be the case. it has not been a cause of an accident thank goodness but have come very close. this is a danger to other drivers and to myself. *jb | |||

| 2000 ford focus se, engine will stall with no warning causing a complete stop of the vehicle in the middle of the highway almost causing an accident. since the problem didn't show any prior symptoms i consider this a major safety problem due to that when it happened to me in a 5 line highway at night with heavy traffic only luck helped me avoiding a major accident. i received a letter from ford back on 2004 related to a fuel pump problem and a replacement program to vehicles having symptoms listed on the letter. at that time my vehicle was working fine so i follow the recommended action that was to take no action and safe the letter in case of something happening in the future. how good is the letter if this problem no give any warning signs it happen at any given time. please follow up on this problem that had been reported by many owners. *jb | |||

| Fatality vehicle fire, dec. 8 2004. my husband is the original owner of a 2000 ford focus, subject to numerous service visits to bill brown ford, livonia mi for: ignition, steering column, wheel bearing, brake, rear window control, seat belt &trunk latches, overhead light and engine light. the vacuum line & fuel pump & valve assembly were replaced 2/03, followed by stalling. in 6/03, a/c compressor & manifold line replaced. fuel line & pump failure in 8/03, resulted in gasoline spill on residential street minutes after parking. bogging followed repairs, pcm reprogrammed & leaking pvc tube replaced 1/04. fuel pump again replaced. in 8/04, our 24 year old son took ownership of this problematic car. we are uncertain as to whether vehicle malfunction caused a 35 mph collision with a fire hydrant. an immediate engine explosion and fuel fed fire trapped my son and his passenger. described by police as a relatively minor crash which would not be expected to claim lives, the subsequent unexplained engine fire claimed two young lives. a malfunctioning driver's airbag was also detected. this incident was originally reported to nhtsa by my husband (#10104088). i am supplying these additional facts for your clarification. please correct your posting of 0 injuries as there were 2 fatalities. please take effective action to save lives, as these trouble plagued vehicles seem to become more lethal as they age. confirmation of receipt of this information is requested. *nm *sc *jb | |||

| These problems have all happened at different times and seem to be completely unrelated. the rotors had to be replaced with the brakes at approximately 13k miles. the engine just went into idle while i was driving. this happened three separate times, but when i took it in to the dealer. they didn't see anything wrong with it and couldn't duplicate the malfunction. my rear wheels started making a very low noise around 8/15/02. after an accident at the end of august. the noise was much worse and the rear bearings were replaced by the shop that fixed my car after the accident. south florida is a high-salt/corrosion area because of our proximity to the sea. this was never introduced before. when the cigarette lighter is pushed in, it does not merely pop out when it is hot. it ejects and is thrown on the floor. having it land on my leg twice and my carpet scorched by it twice, it could have cause a serious accident. thank you for your assistance. dt | |||

| In april of 2000 the first problem was encountered when the car lost electrical power and went on auxillary power- i was towed to the dealer and the alternator was found to be the cause of the power failure - both alternator and battery were replaced with no further problems to report as of yet. second problem encountered while idling i noticed the fan was not turning on to cool the engine down- i brought car to dealer in january of 2002 where i was told that there was a problem with the fan relay switch which was replaced to my satisfaction. no further problems have surfaced with cooling system. thirdly and most troubling is my experience with the automatic transmission. i had noticed the transmission slipping in early 2002 (jan) and had the dealer look at it- they told me the fluid level was low and added a quart and test drove - immediate afterwards changed gears great - as time went on i noticed it again- i made an appointment with the dealer- before the appointment the car started worsening until complete transmisiion failure occured. the car was towed to dealer wher it was worked on for about 3-5 days - a new transmission was supposed to be installed (4/2002). 2000 miles later and 4 months same problem surfacing again!! i have an appointment in the morning hopefully the problem will be addressed. i believe this problem is a safety concern and an accident waiting to happen- so far i have been lucky enough to escape injury or death. there are over 60 incident reports listed on nhtsa 's web site for transmission failures and i believe someone needs to look into this matter further. i am considering legal options as well as a simple yet effective way of voicing my opinions through never purchasing a ford again!!! | |||

| I have totally lost power too many times to count. it seems to happen without rhyme or reason. it can happen at any speed, 25mph to 75mph. it can happen when the engine is hot or cold. if going at faster speeds, i may drop to 20mph, at slower speeds, i come to a complete stop. on 2 occasions, at faster speeds, the entire front of the car was shaking as i lost power. on 3 occasions the check engine light flickered. this can happen tomorrow and then not happen for days or even weeks. i have had the car into the dealer at least 5 times. they, however, only have 2 of them recorded. the other times when i had it in, i was taking it in for re-calls, so they oviously didn't record the engine problem. they have no clue what is wrong. i've been told i bought bad gas. i've been told to let the engine warm up longer - although that is clearly not the problem. i've been told more or less, that i am nuts, nothing was wrong. i was also told the check engine light can not flicker, either it is on or off. it flickered! the last time i had it in i was told not to bring it back in again, unless one of the following occurred #1 the loss of power occurs as i am driving by the dealership or #2 the car totally breaks down. i was told that would be the best thing that could happen! they said they could figure out the problem then! a couple of times when this has happened, i've been on the highway, with my 5yo in the back seat. i nearly got rear ended both times. i also asked the dealer if other owners of the focus had similar problems. i was told no, you are the only one we are aware of. i have found out since then, through others, such as yourself, that this is not true. i hope that you can help find and reslove the problem before someone loses a life. thanks.*ak | |||

| Repeated attempts in dealing with ford service, customer service and management (regional and central offices) have failed to correct these problems. discrepancy in documentation by thomason damerow ford service department in what i was told was done to the car versus what was documented. i was told verbally that certain corrections were made to the car but these were not documented. for example, i was told by chad the evening service manager that there was something wrong with the crank shaft dampener yet this was not documented when i picked up the car and informed dealer i would pursue lemon law. dealer had car for 30 days in april and i was told parts were on back order. regional manager was to have called me back but did not. service manager contacted on 08/22/2000 and 08/23/2000 regarding repeated problems but he only seemed to be concerned with documentating our telephone conversation. service manager stated he did not know the status on the back ordered parts but that he would call me back but he has not. i informed him that car continues to stall while driving. dealer provided with new phone and address although they were to have contacted me a few months ago before i moved yet failed to do so since april 30,2000. car has since stalled, i am very afraid to drive the car on the highway as the car will not even reach acceptable and a safe speed to merge with highway traffic. i will not use the cruise control as it seems to accelerate on its own even after the cruise control is not in use and it is turned off. there are numerous other problems with this car but the one i am most concerned about is the safety of this vehicle.....stallling, engine shut down while driving on highway, inadequate speeds to merge with traffic, inadequate speeds on slight incline, unable to use car to travel up the mountains which are plentiful in the area where i live. please investigate this problem to protect the public's safety , both the ford drivers and others on the road | |||

| Flange brakage on the egr valve assembly. the pipe breaks at the flange where it connects to the side of the exhaust manifold. causeing a sputting sound and emitting exhaust fumes into the automobile. it also causes problems with (3) sensors. i called the service and parts department at three local dealers and was told by all three that this is a common problem with this part but there was no recall. so i had to have a new one installed with a one year warranty on the part. but if this is common whats to say after a year it will break again? the part is not well made as it's made out of copper with a small weld at the flange. i have been to other focus owners group sites and found several had seen this same problem. i would be thankful for any help you can give me on this matter. john garner | |||

| Air has not worked properly from purchasing the car new. i purchased the car in wa state and have moved to ohio. i am now told that even though the problems started prior to the warranty expiring, since i bought the car from another dealer, i will have to pay for any future prolems myself. fuel, ford know this is a problem, and refuses to tell me if the new fuel pump i had them put in is an old pump or a new one without the problems. other, exhaust leak, i was told i had an exhaust leak, but the engine still sounds very knocky. i am 4th generation ford, my sister was also and now buys anything but ford, this will also be my last ford, but any cash back would be great after buying the most expensive piece of junk i have ever had. | |||

| -2000 ford focus lx - bought used on april 14th. both interior and exterior of car in excellent condition, ran extremely well, one owner repo, clean title. -was rear-ended in very low speed, low impact collision, no frame buckling, bending, or damage to car other than scratched rear bumper - truck lid will not latch now. multiple mechanics and appraisers - unable to find problem. -while driving, dash gauges and car speakers will suddenly stop working (speedometer goes to 0, odometer goes blank, fuel gauge goes to 0) and then spontaneously come back on with no after effects. car stalled while stopping after one of these episodes. occasionally when car is started, the odometer will spontaneously reset without prompting (not the main one, the resetable one). -random codes being thrown to computer - car has had two diagnostics run in two weeks, the first for two codes: 1. a mechanical issue, 2. for electrical difficulties in the dashboard - the car was thoroughly inspected and no defects were found. seven days later the computer reported an evaporative system leak - once again the car was thoroughly inspected and no defects were found. after the first diagnostic, a rear brake light went out - after removing the light and fiddling with the wiring, the mechanic got its normal function to resume. -the car has 36,000 miles, i had the brakes inspected the day after the car started shaking violently when i pressed the brake pedal. the rotors are warped terribly and i will have to have the entire brake system replaced, including the rear drums - i do not consider this normal, especially in such a young car. -it has had two recalls filled in the last month, one for a pinch bolt and the other for a wheel bearing. no other recall campaigns were open. these problems have continued since the recalls were completed. -i've owned this car for less than a month. the cars pre-purchase inspection came up clean. the car is no longer under any kind of factory warranty.*jb | |||

| While on a trip from sebastian, florida to jackson, ohio to return my car to me at what i hope to be my new home, my father encountered a recurrence of stalling while running by my vehicle. the car has a similar problem just two weeks before, was checked out on computer by a repair shop in orlando florida and then last week at a repair facility local(in sebastian). the check engine light had come on in orlando where the facility said they could not find a problem on the computer but thought it sounded like the catalytic converter. the car was towed to sebastian to the second facility. at the second facility the computer again showed no problem. the check engine light was reset and the car was returned with indirections to drive it to try to get the light to turn on again. it never turned on again so the car was returned three days later (monday, 4/9/07) and again hooked up to computer. no problems were seen and the problem could not be duplicated on the road. the mechanic thought perhaps some carbon has been dislodged and run through the system so a cleaning was done. car was then driven almost 400 miles to ridgeland, sc on the way an accident occurred on the highway ahead and the car had to sit in traffic for quite a while. when the car was free to advance, it was taken off the road for a lunch stop. when taken back on the road, the car stalled in motion and after restarting continued to stall.*ak | |||

| I received a notice of a recall on my 2000 ford focus concerning the defective fuel pump design. the notice recommended waiting until the new design was available in january 2004 before taking the vehicle to the dealer.the vehicle was not showing any symptoms at this point but did so shortly afterward.shortly before getting a schedule to take it in,the check engine light came on and stayed on. the dealer replaced the recall fuel pump system but found the engine light was on because of a sticking exhaust valve on one side of the engine which would have to be replaced at a cost of $1900.this was in addition to a $100 diagnostic fee.the condition was described as not likely to cause stalling or furthur damage if the vehicle was driven. i took the car to the dealer where the car was purchased. prior to arriving at the 2nd dealer's shop the check engine light was no longer on.the diagnosis was similar and the cost was put at $2100 plus an $85 diagnostic fee.after requesting an explanation of why this damage would occur on a car with just 28k miles and only after the fuel pump symptoms started,the repair cost was reduced to $600. because the car was purchased a little over 3 years ago the 36,000 miles engine warranty did not apply.the car was running fine and appeared to have no problems until the fuel pump malfunctioned as ford expected. i am certain this caused the engine damage. i will also file a complaint with ford . | |||

| Since october of 2003 my vehicle has been experiencing the following problems: engine hesitation, loss of power when i am stopped a traffic lights or stop signs it would just shut off and sometimes i get power surges and lastly, the engine will sound as if it wants to shut off and or is gasping for air. i have paid for several services, such as ignition switch and other column issues, because my key got stuck in the ignition one time as well. i have several other underlined issues with this problem, first ford has issued a recall for this apparent engine problem, however they have authorized the dealer only to make repairs if it not up to specfications(fuel pump). the dealers are telling me they will charge me for a diagnostic evaluation if the problem is not the fuel pump. i do not have the money to pay for a diagnostic for service evaulation for something on my vehicle that is not a problem. | |||

| This is the second failure, of the same parts. these studs failed in february of 2001. this is not exactly 12/12,000 for the warranty to cover the repair, but it is pretty darn close. i purchased an extended warranty through my credit union, they said they will not cover the repair because i added two aftermarket modifications to the engine. ford said they will not cover the repair, because the extended warranty coverage refused to fix the problem. what they keep stepping around is the fact that this same failure happened a year ago, before i made any modifications. the engine was still stock.*ak | |||
