Defect SummaryOn certain passenger vehicles, contamination of the filter in the fuel delivery module (fdm) can reduce, and eventually block, the flow of fuel to the engine.
Consequence SummaryThis may cause engine hesitation, loss of power, surging, and other similar symptoms. over time, the filter may become sufficiently blocked to cause the engine to stall, which could result in a crash.
Corrective SummaryThis action is deemed a safety improvement campaign and is not being conducted under the safety act. all owners will be notified of the problem, and dealers will replace the fdm with a new design at no charge if the owner reports that the vehicle exhibits any of the identified symptoms. the free replacement will be available for a period of 10 years following the original purchase of the vehicle, with no mileage limit. owner notification is expected to begin during november 2003. owners should contact ford at 1-800-392-3673.

Clogging of the fuel delivery module (fdm) filters in the subject vehicles can lead to stalling and other related symptoms.these symptoms become increasingly obvious to the driver as the clogging gradually increases over extended periods of driving.stalling in these vehicles is most likely to occur when accelerating through a right hand turn such as merging into freeway traffic when the fuel level in the fuel tank is less than 1/4 full.more than 90% of the stalling complaints pertain to the original design fdm installed in my 2000 and 2001 (partial year) focus vehicles. ford has decided to conduct a campaign (03v-482) to address stallingin these vehicles.the smaller number and rate of complaints associated with the interim and current fdm designs indicate improvement but also reflect a shorter time in service for these designs. accordingly, odi will monitor the stalling performance of my 2001 - 2002 focus vehicles equipped with interim and current design fdms.

2000 ford focus. after pumping gas and then starting the engine. the car starts and then dies. the rpm. goes just under 2 and then drops down to nothing and the engine stalls. i have taken it to my mechanic several time and he can't figure it out. so then i took it to a mechanic that deals just in engines, and he doesn't know what's going on with it. the problem is is that it only does it after you pump fuel. it starts fine every other time. the only other difference is that i am noticing that i go through fuel faster now and i am getting less mileage.

I noticed slight hesitation in my 2000 ford focus in june of 2009, and requested that my local ford dealership consider replacing the fuel sender and pump because this was a known internal ford campaign replacement part issue.they indicated because it was not a severe hesitation, they could not perform that work under the replacement campaign. this hesitation continued but very intermittently.then in july 2010, i was driving with my wife and daughter in the above car, and attempted to get on interstate 95.the car began to have severe hestiation issues when i gassed it, and i was unable to get the car above ~ 35 mph as cars swerved past me honking because i could not achieve highway speeds. i drove in the breakdown lane with flashers on and got off at the next exit and returned home via local roads with the symptoms still showing (severe hesitation).i brought the car to my local ford dealer. they diagnosed it as having the fuel sender and pump problem of the recall, but also indicated the cost was no longer covered by ford because ford had a ten year limit on replacement ! i would like to point out the dealership refused to change this faulty fuel assembly a year earlier (when it was still covered), yet now acknowledged the issue but required me to pay for repairing the problem, after having subjected my family to several near-accidents on the interstate due to this known severe safety issue. they indicated i could write to ford hq concerning the issue.i had the work done by the dealership because it had to be done.the problem now no longer occurs. i wrote to ford's customer relation center on aug 17, 2010, describing the above situation. i received a letter dated sept. 1, 2010, indicating that ford agreed with the dealership's decision, and would not cover the repairs because limits must be placed on those efforts to resolve such problems. i am angry they exposed my family to such danger yet refused to allow replacement prior to the issue and refuses to pay.

Normal driving when accelarating or going on ramps onto the hwy. also it happens when making left turns onto street etc. car stalls, or the power gets caught off. this problem led to oncoming traffic car hit my car as the car stalled when i was making left hand turn. it occurs often when below 1/3 fuel tank of fuel. ford had issued extedned warranty on the fuel delivery module 10 years only since initial purchase date.

Everytime i try to merge into traffic my car loses power and sometimes dies. i have tried to keep my gas tank above half a tank bc it seems to run better when it is. but i cant always do that and as soon as it hits around a fourth of a tank it strts to mess up bad.. it feels kinda like a miss. it will strt messing up and eventually start losing power. it has jerking movements when i push on the accelerator. i have tried to figure out why it has been doing this.. at first i thought it was the plus so i got those change and the plug wires that didnt help so the next guess was the cadalitic converter got that taken off and checked it wasnt that.. i research and research and then discovered this website.

Driving down the road in a subdivision at about 20 mph, turned, and heard a cracking sound from left front tire. stopped and got out to look = left front spring coil was broken. i drive a 2000 ford focus. have also had trouble with the ignition system - key not turning in tumbler - and with the fuel pump module. last contacted recall from ford dealership was for wiper motor in 2001.

I bought the car in 2008 since then the car has stalled out on numerous occassions. i have replaced the wires and plugs twice, had the fuel injectors flushed out and have been without my car for many days having to leave it with the mechanic to try and solve this mystery. it wasn't until last week that we became aware that the fuel system was recalled. i had to replace the entire fuel modular system, pump and filter. so far this has resolved the issue. needless to say over the past year of having this problem, i have spent close to $2000 in repairs for just this issue. i have also had 2 wheels fall off of the car due to the lower arm control snapping only to find out when i had those replaced that the other 2 would be doing the same thing within a matter of months so of course i had to replace those as well. next is my brakes to be replaced due to the squealing noise they are making everytime i stop the car. i have put so much money into this car and i think it is absolutely ridiculous that these are not safety recalls. having the car shut off while on the highway on quite a few occassions and wheels falling off of the car is very dangerous, i'm lucky to be alive and then i have to pay for all of these repairs out of my pocket which is just insult to injury. if there is a way to be reimburst for some of my expensives that i've paid just to feel safe in this car i'd like to know how to go about doing so.

Bought used 2000 ford focus for daughter on 6/19/07. worked fine until about 3 weeks later (~7/6) when car would stall out on her for no reason while she was driving it. taken to dealership we bought from who took it to local ford store so they could look at it. they claim problem has not occurred with them. talked to 800# for ford and lady tells me that service dept has to replicate the problem before they will fix the known problem (fuel delivery module). notification was suppose to be sent to owner. when i talked to previous owners, they said they never received any notifications of recalls, etc from ford. when i spoke to ford, she said owner information is not automatically updated with them...i had her update with my daughter's information. to date, 8/2/07, ford refuses to fix a well-known problem with early ford focus. *jb

There have been several problems regarding 2000 ford focus concerning gas mileage deterioration. all cars lost some form of mpg estimates over years of use, but the focus had terrible deterioration. . i have spoken to many owners of 2000 ford focus' that have experienced the same problem. estimated mpg had been from 15 to 22, with mine fluctuated from 10 to 20. no mechanical problems could be found through normal means. there was no explanation regarding the loss of good gas mileage, with the exception of a problem with the programming of the brain box. also, this car suddenly developed cracks in the windshield - they weren't cracks that were formed from the outside surface or the inside surface. they actually formed in the glass, between the layers. they cannot be felt on the outside or the inside of the glass.*ak

Tl* - the contact owns a 2000 ford focus. the contact called ford manufacturer on 02/05/07, and they told her that the safety recall 03v482000 applied to the vehicle . the contact had the vehicle towed to the dealer, and was told that they were not doing recall repairs anymore. on certain passenger vehicles, contamination of the filter in the fuel delivery module (fdm) can reduce, and eventually block the flow of fuel to the engine. the contact was told that there was no recall even when she gave the dealer the recall number. the contact stated that this vehicle had the same failure as mentioned in the recall. on 2/5/07 the vehicle would not start. when merging onto the highway at 25 mph the vehicle lost power, sputtered and stalled. someone almost hit the contact's vehicle several times because it stalled. she pulled over to the side of the road and turned off the ignition and restarted the vehicle. this has been going on since 2004 intermittently, and usually happened when she attempted to merge into traffic. also, the this happened several times a week, and each time she has had to pull off the road and restart the engine.

I purchased my 2000 ford focus in 2001 and feel as if i have spent more time in the shop for recalls and repairs than i have driving it. in march 2003, i was driving 65 mph on the highway when the car died without warning. i was barely able to make it safely to the shoulder and required a tow to the dealership. they fixed the problem which was apparently related to the recall for the fuel delivery module. the car ran fine until recently when it again began to hesitate, surge, and stall (especially if the air conditioner is on, which i now cannot run and i live in tennessee where the temperatures are regularly in the 80's and 90's). i took the car to the ford dealership yesterday and told them i am having the same problem i had before when the recall was apparently fixed. they said to come back the next day and they would look at it but it would not be covered under the recall or warranty because it was already fixed once and it's only guaranteed for 12 months. this car is a lemon if there ever was one. i will never again purchase an american-made car if they are able to get away with ripping off consumers the way they do. *jb

I took my vehicle to the local ford dealer on march 2, 2006 after i was having trouble with it stalling and then it was hard to restart. they replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter. then on may 19, i took the car in again to have a recall on the locks fixed and to assess the check engine light being on. i was told that their was an evap leak at the gas cap and one would be ordered for me. during this wait i experienced a strong gas smell surrounding the vehicle and coming up through the vents. then on june 4 (the cap still not replaced), i was getting poor gas mileage. as i was backing out of a driveway i noticed a string of gas. as i was driving down the road i was losing gas. i went from half a gallon to e in less that 8 min. until i arrived at my destination and the car died. i put it in neutral and rolled to safety. then i had to have it towed to my local ford dealer who is currently assessing the situation....please help!!! previous problems includes, but it is not limited to the following problems (cuts out, dies, hesitates{coil pack replaced}, the key not fitting into the ignition {jammed the key in & wd40}. *nm

Please look into the fuel systems of the 2000 ford focus. my son and his friend were killed in an automobile accident on 12/8 in detroit, mi. early that morning, they struck a fire hydrant and the car exploded (back of the engine fire). earlier, in the summer of 2004, i had driven the car home, turned off the engine, and gone in the house. about 5 minutes later. i came out to go to dinner with my wife...the car wouldn't turn over. when i got out, i found gas spewed all over the street. i hosed down the area, and had the car towed to bill brown ford-livonia, mi. the car was repaired, and i was assured that all was well. now, 5-6 months later, this accident occurred. i am not suggesting that the accident (hitting the hydrant) wasn't my son's doing. however, the speed at which the accident occurred (est. at 35 mph) shouldn't have resulted in a fuel line break and fire. please check into the incident. the incident report number (detroit police department) is 04146060. the vin number of the car is 1fafp34p4yw217077. the service record at bill brown ford will note a long history of fuel system problems, including the issue noted above (gas on the street). more than anything i want to prevent another tragedy. please look into this matter. *jb

I purchased my 2000 ford focus se from merlin motors in saskatoon. production date - may 2/2000, stock no. pp24941, r.o. no. 155631. i believe this car was previously owned by someone in british columbia. here is a chronological breakdown of repairs. april 17/01 - took car in because driver mirror vibrated badly when driving - so badly that i could not look into it, it was shaking that much. also, the trunk would not open from the release inside the car. parts were ordered at this time. vehicle kilometers- 32854. june 19/01 - they checked for driver mirror vibrating when driving and replaced driver side exterior mirror. the also checked for trunk not opening from the release inside the car, they replaced the trunk stop and adjusted. vehicle kilometers- 35222 june 20/01 - they checked for power steering leak and replaced steering rack and set toe. vehicle kilometers- 37782?? (this is obviously an error - i know i did not drive 2, 560 km in one day!) i also did not complain about the power steering and don't recall why my car was in there at the time. sept 21/01 - they repaired rattle in right front going over bumps, tightened all assemble bolts in front end, removed right caliper and rotor, lubed all bushing, adjusted front splash shields, found tie rod bolt loose and tightened. they also fixed molding on window belt, which was loose and checked inside rear view mirror and found it flawed - part on order. vehicle kilometers- 43170. nov 3/01 - we were driving in saskatoon when engine started to boil. we knew this because of steam coming from the hood, all gauges in the car read normal! we took car to merlin - they could find nothing wrong with the car after their checks, and told us to bring it back if it happened again! work order for this date states: customer saw steam coming from under hood, antifreeze pooled on engine, gauge read normal, steam coming from overflow tank - fill with a/freeze, pressure test for leaks, no leaks found.

I have nothing but grief with my 2000 focus. 1) most recently i had was traveling at 50 km/h when my front right coil spring dropped out of the front end. i phoned ford repeatedly and even though i discovered a program covering my the coil springs on i was given the run around saying that i was outside the program recall date by a few months even though the car was made at the wayne assembly plant; where other program recalls were coming from. i ended up in a field when the coil spring broke, narrowing missing the car next to me. i was thankful that i had escaped with my life but not to be covered by ford was a slap to the face. i am very upset about the way they handled this situation and i am determined to let everyone know about this situation. my alignment is also out because of the accident but can't afford to fix it right now. 2) four times since i've owned the car, the car has stalled. twice rounding a corner going onto a highway and 2 twice on a straight away highway. it always happened when the gas gauge was below 1/8 of a tank and so i thought it was my fault because i was running out of gas. of course i blamed myself. but four times ? i began to become suspicious when the car began chugging uphill on a recent long distance trip. i barely made it to my destination. when i took into a ford dealership in sudbury ontario the serviceman told me that knows of the problem though most of them came in under warranty. of course the problem at first only presented itself when the tank was near empty and so i always or nearly always made sure to have at least half a tank full of gas when driving. today the problem is present regardless of how much gas is in the car. very convenient for ford seeing as though i am outside the 60,000 km warranty plan. again i do not feel comfortable driving on the highways anymore. i am hoping that ford will hear me out a pay for the repair.

On october 10th 2003 i was driving in the ford focus 2000 wagon from new york city to cleveland, oh, about 500 miles. it drove well for about 300 miles, but started to choke and sputter on hills, like it was about to stall. i was hoping i would make it to cleveland for repairs, but it stalled out on me going 65 miles an hour 60 miles outside of cleveland. i was able to restart, and limped into the nearest town and found a ford dealer in ashtabula oh. he said it was the fuel filter and repaired it. it drove fine for the rest of journey into cleveland. but i then headed to new york city a few days later, and again after 200 miles, it started sputtering on hills. then outside of binghamton, ny it stalled again. i again restarted, and terrified of a fatal accident, i called for road side assistance from verizon wireless. they got a tow truck to get me to a garage, but they were closed. the next morning, i waited for them to diagnose the problem and repair the car, but they were unable to replicate the stalling problem. i drove the rest of the way into new york city terrified, and almost stalled out at the foot fo the george washington bridge. it was after 5:00 pm so the dealership was closed that i bought the car from. so i am planning to have them look at it. but they said that unless they can see the problem, they can't fix it. i also called ford and they said they never heard of this problem. which i later found out is a major problem with this car, and there is an active investigation underway at nhtsa. i am hoping to get by under the lemon law in ny, but fear that the dealership will claim there are no problems with my car. thank you for listening to my complaint.

Started experiencing problems with the vehicle after purchase. suddenly in august, all power systems/computer type items began to fail -- power locks, trunk release. then, car began (and still does) to sputter and shake when stopped/idle until it would shutdown. also, the radio/cd player would shut off. checked for tsbs for the vehicle model & year and found at least 15. when i took the car to the dealer (world ford sandy springs) we were told that they are technical service bulletins and that we would have to pay to have the car repaired. only official ford recall notices, not even ntsa recall notices, would be honored. on top of this, we would be expected to pay $90 per complaint batch (the tsb list was batched in to 3 main areas)for diagnostic purposes and if any of the complaints were related to a recall, the $90 would be refunded as applicable. i expressed that if ford issued a tsb and the ntsa issued a recall notice, then i should not have to pay to have the car worked on.

Nov 2002 took to dealer the car was purchased from, told them it was sluggish and gas guage didn't always register. i thought at that time it was maybe the transmission. i was told nothing wrong, could not duplicate problem. took to neighborhood dealer for the same problem replaced fuel filter. had all this work before warranty expired in feb 2003. never notified about possible fuel pump. june 27th started car and engine died. it then wouldn't start again for about 30 minutes. i took it immediately to my neighborhood ford dealership. who told me it was the fuel pump and strongly suggest not to drive the car until repair. so the car was left there for repairs. after listen to the service people at the dealership, it came to my attention this was a common problem. i started to invesigate this myself and find 67 cases listed on the nhtsa website. the common statement was that the while driving at any speed and without prior warning vehicle dies out. on car hitting a park vehicle and several near misses on the highway. 2000 ford focus engine sputters and then stalls at high speeds. my concern is that i have heard and read hundred if not thousands of these fuel pump failures and after many nice but ineffective answers from ford i feel that someone will be injured seriously or die to these faulty and possibly dangerous fuel systems. my dealership previously worked on this telling me fuel filter and i feel know well it was more and like the fuel pump. it seem that the gas guage not registering is a clear sign of problems with the fuel pump.

Extreme amount of problems and recalls, vehicle has low mileage. in addition to listed problems, severe rear tire cupping at 7000 miles, may be attributed to loose rear wheel bearing. power steering pressure hose leaking, a/c still not fixed correctly cold lasted for about a month drivers door lock wont lock interm. rear trunk latch wont release from inside car. fuel gauge erratic, caused driver to run out of gas on a bridge. maf sensor failure, caused driver to be limited to 15 mph on freeway till next exit. vheicles radio stuck on with key removed causing battery drain---happened twice and was fixed. vehicle is a lease due back for return in august. cant wait to be rid of this headache but feel sorry for whoever buys it... i would still like ford motor co to reimburse me for the lease payments made for the amount of downtime and time vehicle spent at the dealership to fix some of these problems......thankyou

My car started by losing power and the the engine would race up in any gear. the lights on the dash would dim along with the radio and the headlights. then on oct 31 2002, the gages went crazy. i parked the car and called ford and asked if they would run a test to see what was wrong. they said i would have to pay for the test and i told them i could not afford it. since then i only drive the car to the store about 5 miles from my house and back. now the engine is stalling again in any gear. the engine light is on. i again asked the dealership and ford if they could run the test to see what is wrong with car again they refused. i just now wrote a e-mail to ford. i just want my car that only has about 49000 miles to run. ford is offering a longer warranty on the newer focus why not offer it to us that owner the piece of junk older focus.

We purchased this 2000 ford focus on 11/13/00. we began having problems with the manual transmission for the first time in january 2001 and took it to the dealership on 1/25/01 for diagnosis and repair. the vehicle has been in for repairs 4 additional times for manual transmission problems on 8/01/01, 1/11/02,7/09/02, and 2/13/03. the problems have been difficulty shifting into 1st and 2nd gear, grinding when shifting into 3rd gear. one of the times it was taken in we had completely lost the ability to shift into 2nd or 4th gear. each time they have fixed the problem only to have more problems occur. the vehicle was taken to the dealership on 1/30/03 for road noise and wobbling in the wheel. the tire almost fell off on the way to the dealership. at that time we were advised that there was a recall on the wheel bearings. we had never received notification of this and in fact the service manager said that he was unaware of the recall until he looked up our vehicle in the computer. they subsequently performed the following repairs: found related damage because of recall as follows, left drum, spindle and bearings refaced right drum r & r right spindle. rear shoes replaced parts for related damage. this is the information stated on the invoice. at this time the check engine light had also been on so we asked them to also find out what that problem was. they found gross leak found at evap manifold line. replaced line. this vehicle has also been to the dealership for several recalls including the replacement of a battery cable on 1/30/03 and another unspecified recall on 10/02/01. this vehicle has been in the shop 6 times for a total of 67 days in the 27 months that we have owned it. it now has 35,800 miles and the warranty is about to expire. we have made several calls to the dealership and to ford customer service. they have offered to extend the warranty on the drive train and charge us a $50 deductible each time that the vehicle requires service on this system.

My 2000 ford focus has had problems starting 2 months after i purchased it. it's been in 6 times for excessive brake noise and or squealing. the door hinges were squeeking and had to be replaced due to misalignment..it took 5 times to determine this. weather strip molding has been replaced due to falling apart around the headlights. the cd player/stereo was replaced with a new factory model when cd player would not work properly. the "new" model was replaced yet again due to coding seen and no numbers in the window digital area. the fuel pump was replaced after stalling more than 50 miles from home...still does not run up to performance. fuel area reworked again. would not start due to battery cable. ford needs to discontinue this model until they can fix the problems it has with it. they also need to get all focus models off the road, they are safety hazzards.

Air has not worked properly from purchasing the car new. i purchased the car in wa state and have moved to ohio. i am now told that even though the problems started prior to the warranty expiring, since i bought the car from another dealer, i will have to pay for any future prolems myself. fuel, ford know this is a problem, and refuses to tell me if the new fuel pump i had them put in is an old pump or a new one without the problems. other, exhaust leak, i was told i had an exhaust leak, but the engine still sounds very knocky. i am 4th generation ford, my sister was also and now buys anything but ford, this will also be my last ford, but any cash back would be great after buying the most expensive piece of junk i have ever had.

Car has had the brakes serviced a total of five times and the car is stalling during acceleration. this car has been in shops for several recalls as well as twice for ignition lock failure. one of our children was trapped in rear seat by defective seat belt & had to be cut out with a knife. car stalls after it warms up. dealer says it's fuel pump but if that were so, wouldn't it stall waarm or cold. i spoke to an employee at another dealer who said ford was finding problems with sensor connected with cooling system. who do i believe? they want to charge us $700 to replace fuel pump that probably works fine.

I bought the car in june of 2000 since this time the car has had a number of recalls on the car. i feel that the people that bought the 2000 model of this car should not be liable to pay the amount the contact was signed. due to the fact that at the time the car was bought, the people that bought the car didn't know that most of the car's life would be in the shop being fixed. also ford knew that the focus was prone to this happening.

Fuel system: vehicle was filled with fuel at a gas station. driver went to leave, car did not start. attendant informed driver that fuel was leaking from vehicle. almost a full tank of fuel dumped onto pavement. fire department showed up and towed vehicle away. apparent problem: fuel hose linkage had come loose and had fallen off from inside the body of the vehicle. other: throttle cable breakage in heavy trafic at high rate of speed. driver meanwhile merging with traffic. breakage resulting in quick deceleration. serious accident narrowly avoided. car was unfortunately out of warranty period, but ford paid for the repair. towing charge was not reimbursed.

Numerous problems with focus. bought car in 2001. since the day that i drove off the lot i had squeaky brakes. took to servicer and was told dust on brakes & it was normal. after three attempts, they changed pads & rotors. now i hear the squeak again. car cut off while going up a hill. was told by the servicer that it happened because the weather had recently gotten hot and it shocked the car. key wouldn't enter the ignition. had to have the car towed to servicer. car shuts off if under half a tank. servicer told me keep the gas over half a tank. sometimes i smell something burning while heat on in car. on 2 occassions saw smoke coming from the vents while a/c on ( didn't take to servicer for these problems because they never occured again). today 11/10/03 the check engine light came on and the car started shaking and stalling eventually cutting off. took to the servicer and explained the problem, without even mentioning the make and model of my car the technician said, you must have a focus. no longer under factory warranty and can't afford to pay for these defects that ford is very much aware of. also, the car no longer has value. tried to trade it in before factory warranty ran out last year, and was told car only worth $4,000 while i still owed $10,000, which means i would have had to come up with the $6,000 difference to be free from the car. the car was only 2 yrs old when i tried to trade it in! so, i feel i got ripped off with a lemon that i can't even get rid of. i am seriously considering calling the finance company and voluntarily giving the car back, but then my credit will show a repossession, which is not fair being that the consumers were never told about the history of problems with the focus before we bought them.*ak

Water leak in my 2000 ford focus. upon reading this website i realize the other problems i've had are similar to this car. car stalling, fuel gauge sticking, radio going out, carpet being replaced, wiper problems etc. when it rains the water can fill the passenger floorboard 2-3 inches. i've had the leak checked at several different places and so far no one can find the leak. according to this website the dealer can't find the problem either. my car is not under warranty any more, and i was informed if the leaking continues it will damage the brain computer or electrical system. if that happens and i have to spend a couple thousand to fix, but if the leaking is not found it will just happen again. i feel this car is unsafe and should have a recall. also, i have not received notice of all the recalls that pertains to this car. i have received only one pertaining to the back real wheel bearing, which was replaced at dealer. but i see that there have been others. why was i not notified? *la

The car stalls in turns while downshifting; going up hills and at highway speeds. it begins hesitation while accelerating; and after several hesitations it will stall out much like it is running out of fuel. the problem began the first year i bought the vehicle and only when the car was running with under half a tank of fuel but now occurs even with a full tank. twice i have mentioned it to ford technicians, twice test results came back negative. the ford technicians have been unable to locate the problem and the car is no longer a reliable source of transportation. *la

Gas mileage is poor on this size veh--motor kicks into neutral while driving at higher speeds. dealer keeps telling me there is no problem/cannot duplicate, 4 incidents, this is very freighting. especially in heavy traffic & cannot get off the road fast. brakes wear between 16000 and 18000 miles with normal driving. the motor belt had to be replaced at 22000 miles. this never happened so soon with any vehicle i have ever owned. repairs and services are very expensive, many safety recalls and product warnings that take time to repair. the dealer has a problem making sure the parts are available when i make an appointment. the wheel bearings have been replaced several times and sound like they may be going bad again! i do not feel safe in this vehicle. what if something fails while myself or my family are in this vehicle. this vehicle has depreciated at such a drastic rate, that i would be wise to trade it for another vehicle. i feel it is in direct relation to all the safety issues with this vehicle. *ph **dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut over to artemis**763169

Six weeks previously, engine stalled on freeway. dealer said couldn't find a problem and let them know if it happened again. 5/31/02 could not get car to go; had towed to dealer. after several days they finally thought it was the air intake valve causing the problem. today i hear about the focus stalling problem possibly being caused by debris in gas tank. i am afraid to drive this car for fear it will stall again on the freeway. i was lucky the last time that i was able to coast to the shoulder and did not get into a crash. i was able to re-start the car and get it off the freeway. other continuing problems that i have had the dealer fix over 3 times each: squeaking brakes and molding around the doors falling off.

Vehicle stalls without warning at various speeds. losing all power and steering wheel locks up. dealer notified 4 times. first 3 times they did nothing, fourth time they said they replaced air intake valve. the morning after we got the car out of the shop it stalled again while driving 55mph. we are tired of getting the run around and are hesitant to contact dealer again concerning this problem. 2nd problem- put key into ignition and key wouldn't turn. car had to be towed to dealer where they kept it for a week. i was told it had to do with the ignition cylinder and key had to be coded. these are only 2 of the many problems we have had with our vehicle, but it is ridiculous for a new car to have so many malfunctions and problems.*ak

Install an after-market oil rechargable air filter (improves air filtration and traps more dirt than oe filters). tried to start car this morning and engine would not maintain rev's... and would eventually die. had vehicle towed to dealer. they stated that the mass air flow (maf) sensor was not defective, but was made inoperable by oil deposition resulting from the oiled air filter that i had installed (and that all service would not be covered by warranty). service rep also said that they had a tech service bulletin stating that oil rechargable filters should not be used in the focus (even though after market products designed for the focus are available). excess oil is usually 'burned off' when running the car. in the focus case, the maf is in such a place that it collects the oil or any other product coming through the intake and could be rendered defective by the mere fact that the electronics are exposed. oil charge filters have been used for many years. oe manufacturers are aware of them... and if they are a problem, they should be warning consumers in the owners manual not to use them. result of this attempt to improve on air filtration will be over $300.00 since the addition of this component 'ruined' a ford component. service tech said that if this had been a map sensor rather than a maf sensor, there would have been no problem. ford needs to notify owners of this 'potential problem' as oil charge filters are available in any after-market store (auto zone, pep boys. etc)... and are actively being sold.*ak

I drove a 2000 focus zx3 for 3 years without a single problem. on march 2007 (90000 miles) the car stalled and died completely in the middle of a california freeway. after 5 min i was able to restart the car and drive to my mechanic (not a ford dealer). computer analysis showed a faulty mass air flow sensor. he replaced it ($450). two days later, the car stalled again in a residential area (20 mph and full tank of gas). the car restarted and i drove back to same mechanic. he didn't find anything wrong and suggested i should drive to a ford dealer. they replaced the fuel delivery module at no cost because of ford recall #03n01. after that the car stalled (and died) again while pulling out of a parking lot (5 mph and full tank). ford technicians drove the car for 150 miles while hooked up to a flight recorder and found nothing. i drove it for 20mi with a flight recorder and it stalled right away. i tried restarting it and it stalled again (4 times in a row). i was able to record the data using flight recorder. for the first time the check engine light was on (code p1237). the ford dealer inspection all the electrical wires looking for a faulty connection ground. after re-wiring they test-drove the car again. they think the car is ok now. this has been my third week without a car. i was renting a car in order to go to work (paying to go to work). i can't afford to spend more money on more surprises. i have been stressed emotionally and financially. even if the car is ok now, i don't feel safe driving it (or any other ford). at this point i decided to sell the focus to the same ford dealer. i'm complaining about the ford focus and ford in general (as a corporation and a brand) for allowing such a flaw to be sold to the general public. i have been very well treated by the service department at the ford dealer. *jb

I was driving at 65 mph, while the engine of my car started loosing power and rpms. i immediately shifted to neutral and pulled to the side of the road. i tried to restart the car, but it was running pretty bad, almost as if not enough fuel was going to the engine. i shut the engine off for 5 minutes. i restarted again and it worked ok for another 10 minutes, when the problem occurred again. this is not the first time this is happening, usually it happens when it's a warm (not hot) day, and with half tank or less. however the problem got worse, so it happens regardless of the fuel level. the fuel pump seems to overheat. *nm

Ford issued a safety improvement campaign, campaign number: 03v482000, in november 2003, which stated that contamination of the filter in the fuel delivery module would eventually lead to blockage of the system. the replaced the fdm in my car in 2004 because my car was experiencing all the symptoms of the advisory. however, 2 years later, i am experiencing the same problems because the fix did not work. the filter once again became contaminated and the fuel pump once again needs to be replaced. i spoke to a customer service rep at ford and although he was very understanding, the fact is the advisory was not a recall and they took care of the fdm. i am not sure what else can be done at this point because, this first recurrence happened while trying to merge onto 60+ mph traffic and my care refused to accelerate beyond 30 mph. if ford says that the problem is fixed, then a repeat of the problem should not occur two years later. *jb

Fuel gauge giving incorrect readings, car stalling on tight curves such as on-ramps to parkways and interstates. told the problem was the fuel pump. had it replaced on 7/11/03; within 48 hrs lines disconnected from pump spilling fuel everywhere. ford reconnected lines which held for 2 weeks then disconnected again. this time ford replaced the second pump. now its the coolant system that is failing, car overheats then stalls. so far no accident has occured, but it seems only a matter of time.

Fuel delivery problem, possibly vapor lock/fuel pump related (a common $450-$600 repair way too early in the life of the 2000 & 2001 ford focus according to anecdotal e-mail evidence on internet chat sites), but equally likely to be related to ea02-022. 1st symptom was loss of power upon shifting into 2nd gear. speed there was acceleration from 12 mph up into 2nd gear. the car recovered after a near stall with oncoming traffic approaching. 2nd incident was the next day (today) where i was shifting from around 25 mph into third gear in morning rush hour traffic and was nearly rear-ended because the vehicle stalled. fortunately i was albe to pull over to the shoulder, whereupon the vehicle would not accelerate in any gear/was completely asthmatic. after two minutes in place the vehicle recovered and i was able to proceed. the mechanic wants to replace the fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel filter hose and fuel return line....but if the problem is systemic to the fuel delivery system prior to the fuel pump pursuant to the referenced study, then a new pump will be able to draw fuel better/serve as a temporary fix. but, like the original, it too will fail early due to the higher demand on drawing the fuel through the blockage. the tank was approx. 1/4 full at the time of both incidents. *ak

I have a 2000 ford focus w/ 2.0 zetec engine that started having problems in may of 2002 when i was driving home on the expressway. symptoms included the car lurching in higher rpms (necessary to maintain speed) and eventually the car was unable to maintain 55 mph and stalled on the expressway. it started up half an hour later, and i was able to limp home at 50 mph on the e-way. that problem disappeared after a week, and showed no signs of coming back until the next time i made a long car trip, when it did the same thing, but thankfully did not stall. the car continued to do this, and ford dealers never did find anything wrong with the car, although one dealer charged me $400 to drain and clean the tank because of debris in the tank causing the car to stall on right turns. if not for the focaljet.com website, i would be stuck with an out-of-warranty defective car that ford flatly refused to cover during the warranty, but was happy to split the cost 50-50 one day after the warranty ended. after making another long trip and having the car sputtering at 4000 rpms, i dropped the fuel tank, removed 2 clogged filters from inside the gas tank fuel-sending unit, and the car has worked perfectly since then. i now have more power, smoother power delivery, no stalling or stumbling on the e-way or on right-hand turns, and the car no longer hesitates with the a/c on. these clogged filters have cost me countless hours, trips to the dealer, and $400 when the fix is just to let the external (and user-serviceable) fuel filter do its job. i have kept the 2 filters that i removed and taken pictures of the fuel canister that contained the clogged filters, in case there is any need to investigate them. *nlm

My 2000 ford focus with 45,000 miles on it had been experiencing dramatic hesitation problems around highway exit curves/corners. this happened about 4 separate times, with it finally just stalling and breaking down the last time. thank god the cars behind me were not speeding and didn't crash into my rear end. i was able to roll safely a few feet away to a small shoulder area. i turned the car off and waited a second before starting it again. it started right up with no problem. also a few weeks earlier the car wouldn't start one morning. i had it towed to my local ford dealer, who said it simply needed transmission fluid, they added it and it started up. but in the next two weeks is when it began hesitating on curves and feeling like it was going to cut off. but it had happened once prior to that, it hesitated after the curve and wouldn't accelerate even though i was stepping on the gas. when i took it back to ford, they did a full inspection and told me i needed a new fuel delivery module, a new fuel filter and injection cleaning (the latter 2 being regular maintenance). but this fuel delivery module was major. and my extended warranty (not through ford, but with gm major guard) almost didn't cover it, but decided to cover most of it. the ford dealer told me that the cause for the fuel delivery module going bad was just basic wear and tear over time. i find this hard to believe, especially after reading other customer's complaints of the same problem on this web site and an article on www.cartalks.cars.com. please recommend to ford to address this problem before someone is seriously injured. *jb

On september 3, 2002, as consumer was leaving work, he smelled gasoline and the car hesitated when he accelerated. consumer pulled into a gas station to get gas since the gas gauge reading was between 3/8 and 1/4 full. consumer looked under the car and saw some gas leaking from the car. consumer thought maybe the gas and the smell was the result of some sort of pressure buildup causing an overflow.) however, after having the car filled up, he then started the car and went to pull away. consumer couldnot even pull away from the pump, when he stepped on the gas pedal, gasoline would pour out under the car from the gas tank. consumer had the car towed to pacifico marple ford (broomall, pa). they determined that the leak probably was due to the tube assembly becoming disconnected from the fuel pump. (that diagnonsis was later confirmed.) a new tube assembly was installed and the car seems to be running just fine, consumer is seeking reimbursement.*jb

As a final gesture of goodwill, our local dealership's customer service representative offered us a 24 hour period to consider a $2,000 trade-in credit toward the purchase of a new ford vehicle at 0% financing. this would have more than doubled my daughter's monthly car and insurance payments. because her job was not yet a permanent position, she was not in a position to take a $4,000 loss and double her monthly payments. once that offer had expired we were met with stony indifference by our local dealership's customer service representative. after several conversations with him we came away convinced that ford customer service policies are intentionally designed with several goals in mind: 1) to offer one's local dealership as the only path of recourse other than a nation-wide 1 (800) customer service line; 2) to staunchly refuse to provide the names and mailing addresses of ford customer service representatives at the local level and/or regional level; and 3) to discourage mailings to the national customer service representative (michael jordan) or ceo (william clay ford) with comments such as don't waste your time, they don't even open their mail. the end result is that the car owner feels totally powerless once the goodwill of their dealership's in-house customer service representative has run out. when combined with holding open a 24-hour trade-in offer toward a more expensive ford vehicle, the end result was a psychologically oppressive hard-sell tactic.no safety defect listed. *ak

Had to replace transmission, cost close to $2,800.00. after that was replaced i has a coil spring break over the tire which broke off into my tire and i went careening over a railroad track and i went into a ditch. ford motor company replaced that after much protesting on my behalf. i paid out of pocket to have it towed to a dealership. i was never reimbursed for that. the issue i have had since then is that the car stalls for no apparent reason. i have replaced an o2 censor and battery, but this problem persists. it does not matter what speed i am going. the car acts as if it isn't getting fuel to the motor. now, mechanics are saying i may need to replace the fuel pump which is expensive. i will finally be paying this car off next month. it feels like a disposable adventure. i read up on the recalls and feel this has to be a recall with the fuel system. i am afraid to go very far in this car because i don't know when or where it will stall. it has no real pattern . i tried going with a higher grade of fuel, used additives and it just keeps doing the same thing, please consider my complaint. *tr

On 10/23/07 i inserted key into ignition of my ford focus and immediatley the lights and gauges went haywire-vehicle failed to start. to make a long story short ,after unpluging the battery cables and going back to the stranded car the next evening, it started . 2 days later my wipers came on by themselves and would not stop until i turned the car off and restarted. on 10/31/07 while driving my daughter home, the vehicle began accelerating and deccelertaing uncontrollably. i pulled of the highway and when i opened the drivers door, the seatbelt light began blinking and making a loud ticking noise. this had happened the night prior, but i thought maybe the button was depressed. my dome lights make a screeching noise and blink on and off. this is a serious problem that needs to be looked into. whenever something like this happens i am driving home late at night and of course the dealer is not open to help me . my car is almost paid off and i will not invest more than what it is worth, which is only about $2,500.too bad i have paid about $18,000 for it. i would also like to know why i have not received recalls for the following problems: 1. 1st month after purchase, electrical system running airbags, mirrors, doors etc. failed. 2. 37,000 miles- transmission failed 3. 42,000 miles- power door locks failed and soon after passenger doors stuck in the lock position. 4. all window tracks have failed. 5. wheel bearings replaced. 6. trunk latch failed 7. ignition failed and was replaced and is going again. 8. brought in for 1 recall (fuel filter) and still didn't correct problem with vibration and lurching. this is a vehicle that exceeds highway saftey ratings? something will be done about this if i must hire an attorney- i am out a lot of money and no vehicle. *tr

I own a 2000 ford focus which stalled while driving on the interstate highway (85) between burlington and durham, nc on september 15, 2007. the car first began surging and lost power and later came to a complete stop on the interstate. luckily i was able to pull to the side of the shoulder of the highway before the car came to a rest. the car later started and i was able to make it back home. i took the car to the ford dealer in durham and was told that the problem was a clogged fuel pump and it needed to be replaced at a cost of $750.00. i visited the internet and found that the warranty was extended for the same problem on focus assembled at the wayne and hermosillo assembly plants. the extended coverage program is 03n01. the dealer checked with what they called oasis and my car is not indicated as covered under the extended coverage program. while the failure of the fuel pump did not cause an accident that resulted in injury i feel that i was lucky and could have been towards the center of the highway and would have stalled on the highway and the result would have been different. this extended warranty should be extended to include all 2000 focus because clearly the problem exist with other manufacturing locations and the defect is with the fuel delivery system and not the location of assembly of the vehicle. i have no way of checking behind the dealer but the serial number. *jb

In july 2005 myself and my children were driving my 2000 ford focus lx on the freeway and we were in the fast lane when our car started to stall and were unable to get gas to the car. we later took it to be checked and found out the fuel pump module was not putting fuel into the car and we had to replace it. we later found out that it had been replaced once before. so we had it fixed and on may 30 2006 also driving on the freeway by car began to stall and not want to move well. so once again i took it to be looked at and found out that the same problem as before with the fuel pump module was acting up again and needed to be replaced. i have not fixed it yet due to already fixing it within a years time and have found out that there was a recall on my car and found out the recall was not done on my car due to the vin # not being included in the original recall bulletin. *nm

On sunday, august 29, 2004 my son & i were traveling in the city of madison, wisconsin in a speed zone of 30 mph. all of a sudden my car lost power & died in a busy intersection. i thought it might be the battery. so i shut off the engine & tried starting it again - it continued to not start back up; however, we started smelling gas & we couldn't get out of the car due to traffic all around us. finally a police officer came & asked us to immediately get out of the car - there was gas pouring out all over the road. it appeared that the fuel pump was malfunctioning. in december 2003 i had the recall of the fuel pump replaced at the dealership. however, the police officer indicated that it appeared to be the fuel pump because every time you turned the ignition - gas started pouring out. i had my car towed at my expense of $84.00 to the dealership. i also lost a full tank of gas which cost me $17.00. i called the dealership & they directed me to ford custmer relations. i spoke with an anthony on 08/30/04 @ 7:22am (cst). he indicated that the fuel pump could be replaced again that it was a warranty by ford. however, when i asked about the other expenses of towing, rental car (currently without a car & cannot go to work) , replacement of gas lost - he said ford does not have any way of reimbursing these. the customer service person indicated that was nothing that ford could do about this. my great concern is that my son & i inhaled a lot of gas fumes - we could have been blown up in the car (according to the police officer) - and ford is not be helpful in this matter at all. i feel that the 2000 ford focus is not a safe car to drive. plus i there is another recall for the coil on the car & you can't get this replaced because the coils will not be released until december 2004. this seems not responsible of the ford motor company at all. *ak

Our 2000 ford focus has had so many problems.the most recent has been an ongoing problem that has been getting worse. it started with stalling out occasionally when coming to a stop or making a hard right turn and usually when there was little gas in the tank. about a month ago our check engine light came on after we filled the tank with gas. since then wemore frequently experienced hesitation problems and stalling. two weeks ago our car started hesitating badly while idling, causing the whole car to shake and then it would stall, no matter how much gas was in the tank.it also has power surges mainly at low speeds. we called thomason ford and let them know of the problems we have been experiencing and that we recieved a letter from ford regarding the fuel pumpbeing defective causing the fuel filters to become clogged. we took our car in to have the fuel pump replaced. when we picked up the car is worse then when we took it in.*ak

Washed car at local car wash, and car ran fine. got home to do finishing touches and kept car running. low on fuel, a little under the 1/4 line, but ran fine. went back out about four hours later to go grocery shopping, and car would not start. all the lights and dinging would come on, but the engine wouldn't turn over. for 2 days my car sat in the parking lot not starting. i would go out in the morning to try and start it, and it would almost start, but wouldn't. i had aaa tow my car to a repair shop and when it got there, they called me and asked what i was trying to do. they got the car off the truck and it started right up. they are keeping my car over night to try and start it in the morning. i feel really dumb now and bad for wasting their time. what could the problem be?

I purchased a 2000 ford focus june of 2003. it checked out fine but just to cover myself i also purchased an extended warranty. in december the car began to run rough so i brought the car into the dealer who changed the spark plugs and a hose. all worked fine for about a month, at which point the car began to run rough again. when i would stop or slow down the car would act like it was going to stall and my engine light would come on. at a stop light i would shift into neutral or park to keep it from stalling. around this time i received a letter from ford that the fuel pump has caused problems just like i was experiencing. i was happy to know this issue was being addressed by ford. i made an appointment at the local ford authorized dealer in town. later that day they called to let me know it was not my fuel pump and they needed my ok to diagnosis. well they told me they could not find anything so they called ford. ford explained there was a design defect in the engine that caused carbon build up and something to stick in the valve. now ford will not take any responsibility, the warranty company won't cover it and the repair is over $2000.00! this has been a nightmare for a single mother who purchase a basic, what i thought economical & reliable car. now i am forced to use every penny i have saved to use toward owning a home some day into a car that ford designed wrong. does ford the big company pay?no, the consumer does. this car attracts a certain type of customer, not one with a lot of money to spare! any advice? *jb

I can no longer defend the ford motor company from the moniker fix or repair daily crowd. i am the unhappy owner of a 2000 focus who will no longer champion the ford brand. i commute approximately 130 miles daily - mostly highway and have had multiple near misses due to the fuel pump failure. i had the fuel pump replaced before the silent recall and am now again experiencing the same symptoms at highway speed that ford willfully knows are dangerous to the motoring public. my local dealer - don seelye ford of kalamazoo, mi has no sympathy - is only willing to replace the 2nd defective fuel pump when the new and improved part is available in february of 2004. in the meantime - i and those around me on the highway are at serious risk - all with ford's blessing. i contacted the ford motor company's customer relations center and met with indifference to this issue. they recorded my complaint, offered no solution than to take my life (and others) at risk by continuing to drive their faulty vehicle. the service center representative would not (or could not) tell me whether this silent recall was an nhsta recall that fell under the safety act - which would mandate immediate attention with the full force of federal law. i read with amazement and astonishment the article in the blue oval news dated nov. 19, 2003 by robert lane related to this issue. i was born and raised in detroit, mi and have several family members who have and continue to work for this company with pride. no longer. i have purchased 3 new ford vehicles in the last 10 years, am in the market for a new vehicle and will not be looking at any ford products. i am the head of a 3 car family - with 2 teenagers - one of driving age. no one in my immediate family will be purchasing, driving or riding in a ford vehicle in my lifetime. and that lifetime may be cut short due to ford's decision in relation to this issue. god help them. *jb

My car has a constant bad vibration that intensifies on right turns, going up grades, and over bumps. i have taken it to jim click ford in tucson, az for a total of three times. each time they come up with a different excuse and it never fixes the problem. i have been told at first it was, my tires, i replaced all four tires with top of the line michelins, then i was told that my fuel pump was going out and that is the cause of the vibration, now it is the coils. not one of these has fixed the problem, i am still waiting on the pump to get in stock at jim click, and they did replace the coils at a charge of $370.88. in addition to the vibration it sporadically tries to stall and hesitates when turning. i also have my taillights, and back up lights constantly burning out, i have replaced them 3 times and the last time i had jim click replace them. (the back up light, passenger side is out again) i was also told the first time i took in my car to jim click ford (before the fuel pump recall), i needed to replace a failing fuel pump and that would cost $680.00 to replace. (parts and labor) i could not afford it and took it out of their shop, i then brought it in after the recall and they told me that the fuel pump was not the problem that it was the coil and they could not replace the fuel pump since it was not failing. i then fought it out with them and they said they would replace the fuel pump when it came in stock late january 2004. they did replace the coils and the engine check light was on when i brought it in and that is how they determined that it was the coils. they fixed that problem and i got my car back and guess again the engine light came on the very next day and the vibrations are getting worse. i am starting to feel that this car is a lemon my car only has 64,000 miles and has so many recalls and service bulletins it is scary. *cb

We purchased our 2000 ford focus in august of 2003 it had low miles and we figured i was a good car. in october it broke down on us and it was a clutch disk that went out. we said ok and they fixed it under warranty. the day after we got it back from the shop it started making a weird noise so we took it back and they said they need to make a adjustment. then less than 3 weeks later we ended up having it break down on us once again they had to replace the transmission. well here we are once again. about a month after the transmission. going through a stop light one day the car started to have engine hesitation and loss of power and then would stall out. now they are telling us that water got in our fuel tank and ruined the fuel pump. i just found out by doing some of my own research that the fuel system was recalled in nov of 2003 for cars exhibiting the similar symptoms. the dealership where we purchased the vehicle has not informed us of this recall and states that the water was the cause of our problems. *la

Ford focus fuel pump fails to deliver fuel and car stalls. dangerous! i was only less than half of a tank of gas full and my car stalled out on the very busy davis blvd in nrh tx. it repeatedly died when trying to restart the car to get it to a service station. i filled the car up and the car worked fine. now we never let the car get below a haff a tank. please resolve this issue we could have been killed! this was the most recent time this has happened. this problem and similar hesitation upon acceleration in turns and going uphill have happened numberous times and have left me feeling like i was going to be stranded or worse- in a wreck. i have also had the common ignition cilinder lock problem, a broken door actuator, a broken lumbar support, drasticaly leaking a/c onto the floor, a very noisy front stut noise when going over speed bumps, front car creaking from right front fender noise at highway speeds, and poor service reps that insult person and destroy car (broke things on car that were not broken when brought in for service). all of these things need addressing, but most of all the fuel/hesitation/stalling problem before someone is killed!

I have a 2000 focus. i experiance hesitation when the fuel tank is about 1/4th full, it died once while turning around an offramp cloverleaf. also when coming to stops it idles rough. when starting and waiting while in or out of gear, idling is rough. turning corners i occasionaly get creeks from the front and rear. sometimes i hear thumps from the rear when riding over bumps on occasion. i hear and feel a growl while the engine is running regardless of being in or out of gear or in or out of motion. it feels more prominent when the temp. is below 60 degrees. i can feel it vibrating in the steering wheel while turning and it seems to stop while turning left but continues when the steering reaches center. while going up or down inclines or small depressions in the road it becomes even more noticeable and you can feel it in the floor. the drivers side rear door lock sometimes clicks in and out of the lock postion erratically when the electronic door lock/unlock button is depressed. this handle is also extremely tough to open. sometimes power is lost to the radio, i remove the detachable aniti-theft piece and replace it, sometimes it works, sometimes i need to do it numerous times before the radio will turn back on. i had experianced warped rotors on the front when i first bought the vehicle numerous times, but i switched them with slotted rotors so i no longer have this problem. my rear brake drums are stock (but the pasds are not) and they squeal quite frequently, possibly due to excessive dust. i had noticed that sometimes the power window control would not work for windows other than the drivers. this has not happened in about a year or 2. i have just recently experienced water in the passenger well. last, occasionally the transmission will hesitate while driving. it almost feels like the transmission is shifting into neutral, but more like it was a human with a cluthc out a bit who cannot make up their mind about what gear to use.

While driving at any speed on the highway vehicle stalls intermittently, and by doing so, it causes steering wheel to lock. vehicle had been in dealer's shop for fuel pump replacement. at the time of fuel pump replacement mechanic broke the plastic coupling that connected the fuel line to the fuel tank. the breaking of the coupling caused an explosion to occur in the fuel tank. *ak

Fuel supply cuts out and vehicle stalls when making long right hand sweeper turns with accelerator depressed (wot) when fuel tank is less than 1/2 full. this typically happens on highway on-ramps when brisk acceleration is required to safely merge into traffic.

Faulty fuel pump, made vehicle unsafe to operate. contacted ford customer service and selling dealer on 07-18-03 ref splitting cost of repair as this is a known defect on the 2000 and 2001 model year ford focus. as of this date have not had any response from either. the dealership service manager that effected the replacement of the pump stated that the new pump they installed on my vehicle was a much upgraded part from the original. there fore i contend that ford motor company is well aware that this was a defective part installed on the above model years. there should be a recall of these model years for this defect as the fuel pump failure could cause a motor vehicle accident. the cost of the repair was $385.42 complainant is seeking reimbursement of all -or- 80% of repair cost as has been done for other consumers. problem started under warranty but, did not become severe until vehicle was out of warranty coverage. *ak

*ak

2000 ford focus fuel pump problems. i think that this is something that ford needs to recall. the amount of people that are having to pay ridiculous amounts of money to fix this is stupid. i know that ford is a better company than this and i believe that they need to show their true colors and step up to the plate and recall this part on the focuses. it's also a serious safety issue as well. the car will just die when you round a corner. i don't think that's exactly safe. i can't see paying almost 500.00 to have something replaced that's happening on so many cars. i could see paying that money if it was a scarce problem, but it's not. every focus owner that i know has had to replace the fuel pump at least once. some have had to do it 2 or 3 times. this needs to be a recall and ford knows it. *jb

I am an owner of a 2000 ford focus that has been to the dealer for 10 problems/recalls. the latest and my major concern is my daughter was driving down the road at a very low speed just after leaving a parking lot she hit a very small pothole and immediately the car stalled. luckly a gentleman stopped and helped her get the car off the side. we have 40k miles on the car. we had the car towed to victory ford in lagrange ga. the car was there from may 10-may 23 finally repaired at a cost of 670.00. my concern is that i have heard and read of hundreds if not thousands of these fuel pump failures and after many nice but ineffective answers from ford i feel that someone will be injured seriously or die due to these faulty and possibly dangerous fuel systems. also my dealership previously worked on this fuel system under warranty. after filling the gas tank the only way it registered was after slamming the car doors. that was repaired it seems. *nlm

2000 ford focus engine sputters and then stalls at high speeds. after sitting on the side of the road and letting the car sit with the engine off, you can start it up and then drive for approximately 10 minutes at high speed before the same problem occurs. at lower speeds the problem is not as prevalent. pinpoint diagnostic computer first provide the mass air flow sensor as the problem. several weeks after the new mass air flow sensor was replaced i had the same problem (exactly the same symptoms). this time the diagnostic computer provided the fuel pump as the problem. i noticed a technical service bulletin from ford about the fuel pulse damper, but they say that bulletins are not of any issue. i have also been able to find many other instances of faulty fuel pumps in the focus through random internet observation. my car is approximately 5 to 6 thousand miles past warranty (miles only, not years) and i will be spending the equivalent of 4 car payments to have the mass air flow sensor and the fuel pump fixed. any information on this problem would be appreciated. *jb

My complaint deals with the 2000 ford focus . i purchased this vehicle in june of 2001 with 100 miles on the odometer. since then i have had to bring my car back for a few recals. one of the recals was the rear suspension where my car lost control and i veered off the road....luckily noone was hurt. the reason why i am writing this complaint is because i understand that there is a investigation on the focus for various problems. i wanted to add to the investigation by saying that i just spent 340 bucks on my ignition switch because it wouldn't turn which i understand is a common problem and i also had problems with my car stalling in the middle of the thruway. i almost crashed into an eighteen wheeler! i have had the fuel pump replaced and my car still idols very rough and occasionaly stalls out when i am stopped. ford should be embarrased by this and should take all focus's off the road! i read that there were hundreds of ford focus' with the exact same problem but no recal was issued

Fuel pump problems: when making right hand turns, or driving around extended right hand curves (like freeway on- and off-ramps [aka cloverleafs]), the car nearly stalls when attempting to accelerate after the turn. when consumer steps on the gas pedal, the engine seems to stop running. when consumer lets off the pedal, the engine runs again and once the car has rolled in a straight line for a short distance, (50-100 ft.), consumer is able to accelerate. this problem begins to show up when the fuel gauge indicates the fuel tank is less than full. at that point, the stalling problem only occurs after making a hard turn. the stalling problem is easier to replicate as the amount of fuel indicated by the fuel gauge drops below 3/8 of a tank. this problem has not occurred when making any left hand turns. rear electrical problems up until about 38,000 miles, these problems were intermittent, and werenot evident most of the time. consumer had the vehicle checked at a dealer and they were not able to locate (or even reproduce) the problem. recently, the problems began to reoccur more frequently, until now, they are present virtually all the time. the problems occur together. if one part of the system is functioning properly, the other parts are functioning as well. the problems are, the right turn signals flash quickly. the right turn signals flash quickly when the brakes are applied. if the turn signal is on without the brakes (as in approaching a turn or signaling a lane change), the turn signal flashes normally. the left turn signal is never affected. the rear window defroster does not work. the light on the switch illuminates when pressed on but the window does not clear so there seems to be no power going to the wires of the defroster. taillights and back-up lights illuminate. when the switch of the rear window defroster is on (and the defroster is not working) the taillights and back-up lights illuminate.*jb

The first time that this happened i was traveling at 50mph. my car began to lose power and become hard to control, then it stalled leaving my coasting trying to find a safe place to pull over. i took my car into the dealer and they replaced the fuel pump and several other parts. the second time it happened i was again traveling at 50mph, when again i lost power to the car and was left coasting. i believe that this is a serious problem and a very unsafe problem when you have a car with power steering and you loose power it makes it eatremely hard to control the vehicle as well as a car that just coasts. i would like to see something done about this serious defect in these cars. *ak

Driving down the road and the car starts to slow down, even with me pushing the gas. i pulled over safely and the car stalled. i turned the key off thinking it was going to be like last time and i would just have to start it up again. not this time, it acted like it was out of gas but with a half a tank that could not be it. i later got the car back to my house and started looking around. i found a rubber hose that was being compressed in when ever i tried starting the car. later i found that the hose lead back to the gas line. i then over time started looking this up on the net and found out that it could be a recall and i am writing to let you know my story. *jb

While driving my 2000 ford focus, i came to a four way stop and the car ceased to work, as if i had turned off the key...no sputtering, just stopped. i restarted the vehicle and it lurched forward, died again, just as before. as i looked out the front windshield, i observed smoke coming from the hood of the car. i exited the car and flames were coming from the wheel wells. i immediately called 911. people began spraying water on the car from garden hoses, two people stopped with fire extinguishers and nothing put out the flames. when the fire department arrived, within 10 minutes, the entire front of the car was destroyed. pieces in the engine compartment were melting and falling off the engine onto the ground. police arrived to direct traffic. the car was towed to wendle ford, and my insurance company removed the vehicle to their premises the next day. i still have no idea what could have caused this problem in a five year old vehicle with no prior problems. as i have seen several other incidents of fire in this vehicle, the government should make ford motor company investigate why this is happening before someone gets killed! *jb

After driving to work and parking in the parking garage, went inside for about 20 minutes. came back out to car to find a puddle of gasoline which had leaked from the fuel tank. a very dangerous fire hazard. the exhaust system was extremely hot and fuel had leaked all over it. had to have the vehicke towed to the repair garage.. the problem ended up being that the cheap plastic fuel line quick-connector coming from the fuel pump to the fuel line had broken, causing the fuel line to come apart from the fuel pump, allowing fuel to spray all over the tank and exposed parts under the vehicle as well as the concrete garage floor. a spark or lit cigarette butt would have been disastrous. fortunately a fire or explosion did not occur or their surely would have been fatalities.*ak

I have had numerous problems with my 2000 focus. ford has not been willing to fix any problem due to the fact that i'm out of my warranty. my power steering switch has went out 2 times and when i take it back now there telling me it wasn't the switch, its the pump. since that's out of warranty they can't refund my money or anything. ford has a recall on left wheel bearings, but i had to pay for mine to be done, because the recall was in 2001 and my bearings did not go bad until 2002. there is too many things wrong with the ford focus. i have never seen a car in which i had to fix every 5 months. the current issue is that the car is stalling. in idle it will get a point where it will cut off. when shifting to different gears, it hesitates. the car is shaking like it will eventually cut off. it has cut off 3 times and the emission/engine light came on. dt

This problem started happening around 12,000 miles, and while this form asks for a failure date, it does it so much it is hard to say, i put an approximate date of the worst occurrence because of the problem. i realize there is already an investigation about this, i just wanted to add another testimony. when the fuel tank is less than half full, and the car takes right-turns, especially long, sweeping turns, such as highway entrance/exit ramps, the car will jerk and lurch violently, refusing to accelerate, and will stall if provoked enough. if i back off the gas, it recovers, but twice it has completely stalled out, refusing to turn back on for a few hours, one of these times was in heavy highway traffic, i coasted at about 25mph since it would not accelerate, then it eventually died. this particular incident, my dealer filled the tank with gas (which does not allow for the problem to occur, kind of stupid of them), and then drove it around, but would not allow me to show them how to replicate the problem. i must now keep my gas tank more than half full, because of the dangers in getting on and off the highway. it even does it around town now, at times. the dealer says it is a result of a fuel filter getting clogged and they would just clean it out, but other focus owners i associate with (www.focaljet.com) have reported that this is only a temporary fix. otherwise, i have absolutely no complaints about this car, and i applaud ford for the recalls, they may make our car look bad but it shows ford is accepting responsibilty for defects, and trying to improve on them. *ak

When i started my car to go home from work i started to smell gas. i didn't think much of it untill i got home. when i turned the car off, i lifted the hood thinking there would be a problem in there. i could here what sounded like something boiling. then i walked around the car untill i got to the gas tank. thats where i could really smell the gas. i looked under the car and there was gas dripping from the gas tank. my car only has 24000 miles on it, and only a month out of warranty. so i had the car towed to a local garage thinking that maybe it was just a crack in the fuel line. what was found out is my car has a plastic gas tank and has broken at the seams. the boiling noise i heard was the gas spitting on the exhaust. the mechanic said i was lucky that the car did not catch on fire. so i called ford to see what they could do since it was obvious that the gas tank was faulty. they said they would not do anything untill i got the car to my ford service station. i will have to call them and see what they will have to say. i hope i don't have to pay for fords mistake. how can they expect a plastic gas tank to last, when mine has busted at only 24000 miles.

When i get close to 1/4 of a tank of gasoline, my car begins to die or sputter. it has died several times and wont restart. the other day i was coming off an exit ramp from the highway and it died coming around the sharp turn. i was almost hit by several cars while trying to get the car started long enough to move it off the ramp. after about 20 or so times of turning the ignition and gunning the pedal, i got it moved into a safe area off the highway. it took about 45 minutes and a lot of conk outs to get it moved. i was stranded and very angry. i was even more angry when i got home and did a little research to find that this same complaint has been made to ford/nhtsa and never reported to the public. i have had 6 recalls this year on this damn car and i am very concerned for my safety now. i got the car because of its great ratings for saftety- now i am affraid everytime i put my son in the car of it blowing up on me. i want to get rid of it but i cant because i owe more on the loan then i can get for trade in (my guess is the value of the car has totally fallen because of all these recalls). i am so angry with ford and i am affraid for my safety while driving this car. please do something about this! thank you. oh and the gas gauge never reads correctly. i have to count my miles to make sure i am okay on gas between fill ups. the gauge will just drop to below e and the light comes on for no reason. then after a bit of driving it will go back to normal. very odd.*ak

This fuel pump had previously been replaced on 10/18/2001 and 21127 miles due to component failure. the present failure (apparetnly the pump broke at the connection point for the filter/line) resulting in a large quantity of fuel being pumped out onto a sheet metal shield in close proximity to the exhaust system as well as onto the pavement around the vehicle. everything was present needed for a tragedy; fuel and ignition. the car was parked adjacent to a restaurant and several other vehicles and presented, in my estimation, a serious safety risk. the dealer took a cavalier attitude to the failure and merely attempted to get ford to pay for the repairs. i believe the gas tank, pump and filter should be scrutinized on this model of car. if a replacement pump failed on my car, it certainly could fail on others.*ak

 1) stalling, stuttering and or slow acceleration 2) gauges and lights inside and outside the vehicle are fluctuating as they wish. he car was taken to the dealer three times so they could diagnosis and work on the problem. 1st time there was a recall performed on the fdm (fuel delivery module). 2nd time they gave it a computer update and then all of the electrical problems began to occur. third time they sent me away saying there is not a problem. 2 weeks later with all the symptoms giving lots of problems (shuttering and stuttering, car stalled many times while traveling on the interstate etc.). finally it quit all together when electrically it blew up or shorted out somewhere. all the gauges were fluctuating empty to full,0 to 100 mph, air bag illuminated etc. cabin lamps went crazy. the car smelled like it was burning in the cabin. found no burnt or melted wires. i called the dealer to get them to pick up the car and they told me the battery went dead. when they test drove it now being the fourth time they said it needed new spark plugs and wires. i just cannot believe what they are telling me so i pulled this vehicle out of their care. *ak

*cb

Since purchased. on four separate occasions my car has stopped while driving. here is a brief rundown of additional physical problems ive had with the car, which include but are not limited to:3 months: the emergency brake went out. the brakes had to be replaced (2 times). the gas gauge stuck on empty (twice). i felt a constant pulsating on the clutch. the dealer told me that all new cars have that for up to 3 months while they get used to new chemicals running through their system. nearly 2 years later, the pulsating is still there. the car exploded. i parked my car on a hill, with the emergency brake up. then i heard some clicking and a large boom. i turned around to see sparks and smoke pouring out of my hood, a horrible smell engulfed the neighborhood, and my car (with the emergency brake up) was rolling down a hill towards an intersection. the oil pressure united had to be replaced. there was a problem with the clutch. the car trunk would not open. 6 months: the brakes had to be replaced again. they still squeaked excessively. they still sounded like they were scrapping. i took it back in to a dealership and they told me the 2000 ford focus had a brake problem and there was nothing that could be done about it. even after replaced, the brakes would take much pressure before coming to a stop and would squeak. the trunk would sometimes not shut. the emergency brake would not always work. the front tire kept going flat. ford said it was my driving. i paid to have it replaced and the new tire kept going flat. they said the new tire was defective and replaced it and the stem. w/in the first 2 years: on at least 11 occasions the car would not start until turned over a couple of times. the car has low pick up. the check engine light was stuck on. engine light was stuck on. the gas tank needed a new part. the stick will not always go into reverse. when the heat is on for over 15 or so minutes a heavy burning smell in car. bearings/shock problem.*ak

I received a notice from ford program 03n01 possible engine stalling in my 2000 focus. it says the engine may stall while going around corners because of a defective fuel pump filter. my car did stall out on the highway while taking a right on a highway off ramp. when i took my vehicle down to my local ford dealership, i was told that since my car had a branded or repaired title, i was not eligible for the repair. i then connected ford directly through their website. i receive a call a few days later and they still stated that they could not repair the vehicle for me. i made a point to tell them that the damage to the vehicle occurred in the front, far away from the fuel pump filter in the gas tank in the rear of the vehicle. they said only recalls with a s in them, for safety, can be done on repaired vehicles. i and most people would think that a car stalling on the highway because of a defect part is considered a safety issue. i am disputing the fact that this recall should be considered an n recall instead of an s. i had a recall repair preformed on the car a couple months ago. i think it my have had something to do with rerouting the battery cable. how can the possibility of a fire be a greater risk than a car that actually stalls on the highway? i do not understand who designates the type of recall that a particular problem is categorized as and why they made this one a n and not an s recall. just because a car has a repaired title and had been inspected as safe for the road by the state of new york does not mean that its driver should be discriminated against and not allowed to have repairs made that can prevent possible accidents and injuries. also, i personally made the repairs to the vehicle and brought it through inspection. i have pictures showing every repair made and they do not involve any repairs in the rear of the vehicle.*ak

Leaking water into passenger foot-compartment. isolated problem to plastic cover that sits beneath windshield, and is mostly accessible with hood open. the problem is that the plastic comes away from windshield due to some buckling in the plastic. fixed problem by applying pressure to plastic to bend it back to shape so it snagged-up closer to windshield. not seen problem since. mastic to adhere plastic to windshield might be an option to other people. the fuel gauge sometimes refuses to work. found this to be case when key is put into ignition and key-turned to start engine was done too quickly. if entering key into ignition and then turning key each click, giving each click a half-second, then gauge appears to be more reliable. when engine goes into slow-idling state, engine idles very erratically and is not smooth. sounds like only some of cylinders are firing. this has only started to occur today and since reading comments on this website, i'm concerned. have tried adding fuel-injector-cleaner to fuel tank, awaiting results of that. the trunk would not close. the problem here was fixed by removing the locking assembly from the trunk-lid and simply dowsing the mechanisms with wd40 and then bending some spring-loaded components.. there are 2 moving components in the lock. first is shape of a loop that you can easily move with finger/screwdriver. this component locks onto stub that you can see when opening trunk. the other component is hidden within casing and moves in front of other component to hold it in a locked position. problem was with this component. problem was component had somehow gotten bent and not free to leave casing and block other component. bending this to a position freeing it of casing fixed problem. engine lacked power when under load when accelerating, vehicle would shudder and decelerate instead of accelerate. problem resolved when ford dealer replaced spark-plugs plus leads and a full engine tune-up. $230 plus but fixed problem. *la

When vehicle fuel level goes below 1/2 tank, engine begins to buck and lose power. when fuel level gets to 1/4 tank, engine becomes very sluggish, over revs, bucks and is subject to stalling at times of acceleration(i.e.: expressway ramp entrances). have had the vehicle to the local ford dealer and they could not duplicate the problem. have had it to a general repair facility and they could not locate the problem, though they did experience it on several test drives. currently making arrangements to have gas tank dropped and the 2 filters in the fuel sending unit inspected, as suggested in odi id no. 10023502 on nhtsa website. this vehicle has been involved in two inccidents that could well have been devistating accidents, due to the engine stalling upon entrance to an expresway and once in heavy city traffic at a turn light.*ak

The vehicle experienced problems with the wiring, transmission-(jump out of gear), fuel gauge level is inoperative, and the motor would race. the shifter and cable was removed, and the center console was removed to replace the shifter assembly. the dealer could not duplicate the fuel gauge problem. mr scc

Brakes squeak when applied. after 4th trip into dealership, service advisor said this is a common problem for the ford focus but that ford is not doing anything about it. engine has failed on me 4 times in the 18months that i have had it. the dealership just replaced the fuel sending unit and said that it should take care of the problem. i doubt it! if this happens again, i will be checking with california lemon law. this was my first ford and definitely my last!
