Numerous problems with focus. bought car in 2001. since the day that i drove off the lot i had squeaky brakes. took to servicer and was told dust on brakes & it was normal. after three attempts, they changed pads & rotors. now i hear the squeak again. car cut off while going up a hill. was told by the servicer that it happened because the weather had recently gotten hot and it shocked the car. key wouldn't enter the ignition. had to have the car towed to servicer. car shuts off if under half a tank. servicer told me keep the gas over half a tank. sometimes i smell something burning while heat on in car. on 2 occassions saw smoke coming from the vents while a/c on ( didn't take to servicer for these problems because they never occured again). today 11/10/03 the check engine light came on and the car started shaking and stalling eventually cutting off. took to the servicer and explained the problem, without even mentioning the make and model of my car the technician said, you must have a focus. no longer under factory warranty and can't afford to pay for these defects that ford is very much aware of. also, the car no longer has value. tried to trade it in before factory warranty ran out last year, and was told car only worth $4,000 while i still owed $10,000, which means i would have had to come up with the $6,000 difference to be free from the car. the car was only 2 yrs old when i tried to trade it in! so, i feel i got ripped off with a lemon that i can't even get rid of. i am seriously considering calling the finance company and voluntarily giving the car back, but then my credit will show a repossession, which is not fair being that the consumers were never told about the history of problems with the focus before we bought them.*ak

Consumer was on 7th set of tires at 60,000, an alignment with each set. radio had been replaced twice/ brakes had been completely replaced twice/ wheel bearings had been replaced, and ignition was replaced once after vehicle had been towed. low and behold, consumer's focus was sitting in driveway needed to be towed for the same problem again. car was getting horrible gas mileage, sometimes had brake failure which caused 2 accidents. also, lugs:nuts had been replaced. the car would sometimes stall for no apparent reason, and was in need of an alternator.*ak

Ignition failed, had to be replaced, tires wear incredibly fast (4 sets of tires at 45000 miles), radio cut out, had to be replaced twice, brakes failed at least three times causing two accidents, dealership said they replaced them, but lied and never did, was forced to spend $500 having them replaced, trunk doesn't close, bad suspension, spun out on an exit ramp

When brakes are applied, they make a very loud continuous squealing noise until the car comes to a complete stop. every single time the brakes are applied they make this noise. at first it started out as an occasional low squeaking noise during august 2000. then it continued to get worse. i took the car to bob davidson ford in baltimore maryland and they told me that a lot of ford focus owners were complaining about the brakes. they said nothing could be done and that the engineers at ford were looking into the problem. then i took the car to tysons ford in vienna virginia. they said that it was the brake dust causing the problem with the brakes. they charged me $37.00 to clean the brakes. as i drove out of the parking lot, i applied the brakes and they still made the noise. so, i called tysons ford back and they told me that nothing could be done about the brakes but if i wanted them to take another look at the car they would have to charge me again. in the meantime, the brakes are getting worse. then i took the car back to the dealer where i purchased the car (stokes-craven ford/raceway ford in darlington south carolina). they checked the brakes and told me that they turned the rotors. so i picked the car up. the brakes still made the noise. so, i called this dealer back and they said to bring it back. so, the brakes are getting worse and no one can't seem to solve the problem.

Purchased 2000 ford focus, vin 3fafp3132yr227563 from croft ford on dec. 19, 2001; mileage was 12,163 (car was still under warranty); have been unable to walk since march of 2002 (mileage on car is now just over 13,000; last 200 plus miles has been put on by ford dealerships attempting to fix car). have had this car in to several ford dealerships; none of which can solve problem of engine surges; dash lights sweeping; transmission bolting; etc., etc., etc. this car is not safe to drive; i have notified ford motor company; the dealerships, etc., and feel that it should be covered under manufacturer warranty .. instead latest was that ford dealership wanted $500 to replace alternator and could not guaranty that would fix problem; i already paid $105; plus $110 and the same problems are happening. the car has been at the ford dealership in woodbridge, va, for over 2 weeks, which leaves my family without a car to transport me. this is not right. i told todd croft of croft ford that i needed a good, dependable, safe car because this would be the last car i ever purchased. he knew that i did not drive much at all and i feel that he sold the car (with an existing problem) to me thinking that i would never know. my daughter was the one who realized this car had a serious defect and took it to croft ford to be fixed several months ago; to date, it still is not fixed; is a danger to drive, not only to the person/occupants of the car, but to any vehicles near when the power surges occur and the transmission bolts. *jb

Problems with ford focus brakes. it started squeaking after 10,000 miles. i took it in to the dealership and they said it was normal and to check back around 36,000 miles. well, it's already at 36,000 and it is already grinding and sqeaking all the time, even when it's not raining. i took it in to a professional brake specialist and they wanted to charge almost $ 500 to replace the rotars, brake pads and shoes. they said it very unusual for a car with low miles to have the rotars replaced. i was not about to dish out that amount of money to replace them when they should be covered under my extended warranty.

I bought my ford focus 2000, brand new in july of 2000. since then, i've had the wheel bearings replaced twice, the rear door stopped latching and i had to drive it to the dealer with my son holding the door shut, my alternator had to be replaced and still the lights get dim when i turn on the heater, the plastic and rubber door molding started coming loose and falling off right after i bought the car, the brakes have never stopped squealing, and now my key is stuck in the ignition and it won't come out. every time i take my car to a dealer, they always say the same thing oh, that is common with the ford focus. after reading all of the consumer complaints, i guess you could say these problems are common with the ford focus. i've had nothing but problems with this car and expect to experience many more because so far the track record for the ford focus is extremely poor. after reading the numerous complaints, i hope ford is forced into recalling the ignition cynlinder or switch whichever is to blame for the key to becoming stuck in the ignition and the wheel not locking while the car is in park. ts

2000 ford focus se, purchased new 04/2001 --- 06/02 - car died on fathers day, replaced battery with one from auto zone; ?/03 - at service call for recall of harness wiring, complained about led lights flickering, no problem found; 10/05 - car died, towed to ford, battery replaced; 12/06 - service at ford, complained about led lights flickering again, no remedy; 06/07 - car died, towed to chrysler dealer (my employer), could not locate prob, charged battery, 06/07 car died, replaced battery; 06/07 car died, towed to chrysler - replaced alternator; 09/08, ignition locked/replaced; 02/09 car died, towed to ford, replaced battery; 06/09, electrical system warning light illuminates at 35-40 mph. positive battery cable insulation melted. service at dodge (employer) - reroute positive cable directly to bolt on connector to battery, problem continues - carried to ford, they advise alternator is bad and must be replaced. ---- 9 years, 5 batteries, 3 alternators, problem not corrected. dealer continues to treat the symptoms, not cure the disease. something is causing this to happen continuously. numerous focus owners at least through 2003 experience same issues. service advisor admitted to me that they replace a lot of batteries and alternators in focuses and that it seems to be inordinately high numbers. other problems with this car include 3 sets of inferior brake pads (finally had a good set installed by an independent mechanic) and cracked motor mounts causing intense vibration especially when engine is cold. seeking remedy for electrical issues - considering consulting attorney to start class action lawsuit. concerned about potential fire hazard. my daughter was driving this car for past 2 years, finally knuckled and bought her a great chrysler pt cruiser for her personal safety. i am not in a position to acquire another vehicle for myself and must continue to drive the focus until otherwise capable of another vehicle. will never buy ford again. *tr

I purchased a ford focus 2000 from john thorton on thorton road in lithia springs on or about 7/2005. i also traded in my lexus 1991 vehicle which i had just fixed up for 2000.00 and plus the dealer asked for a down payment of 1200.00 which i gave, and i requested them to add a warranty which they did not in the contract. the vehicle was white and black inside. i drove smooth for about 4 months until one day as i was driving the vehicle cut off. i had the brakes redone, and some other work. i took the vehicle back to the dealer and they worked on it and charged me some more. until i realized the mechanic called me name for pick up and he stated to me thinking i was another person, my vehicle is ready and it had 3 recalls on it in the past. i assume he meant me, and come to realize it was my car he was speaking about. every since then, my car would cut off at stop lights and while i was driving. i was told by the dealer mechanic it has a short wire that can cause a fire and there is nothing they can do. i placed the car in ch 7 in bankruptcy in 10/05 and he no transportation except by bus and cab. ford dealer in lithia springs, ga 30122 sold me a car with 3 recalls as part of the car's history. i don't know what else it involved. *tr

Fatality vehicle fire, dec. 8 2004. my husband is the original owner of a 2000 ford focus, subject to numerous service visits to bill brown ford, livonia mi for: ignition, steering column, wheel bearing, brake, rear window control, seat belt &trunk latches, overhead light and engine light. the vacuum line & fuel pump & valve assembly were replaced 2/03, followed by stalling. in 6/03, a/c compressor & manifold line replaced. fuel line & pump failure in 8/03, resulted in gasoline spill on residential street minutes after parking. bogging followed repairs, pcm reprogrammed & leaking pvc tube replaced 1/04. fuel pump again replaced. in 8/04, our 24 year old son took ownership of this problematic car. we are uncertain as to whether vehicle malfunction caused a 35 mph collision with a fire hydrant. an immediate engine explosion and fuel fed fire trapped my son and his passenger. described by police as a relatively minor crash which would not be expected to claim lives, the subsequent unexplained engine fire claimed two young lives. a malfunctioning driver's airbag was also detected. this incident was originally reported to nhtsa by my husband (#10104088). i am supplying these additional facts for your clarification. please correct your posting of 0 injuries as there were 2 fatalities. please take effective action to save lives, as these trouble plagued vehicles seem to become more lethal as they age. confirmation of receipt of this information is requested. *nm *sc *jb

I purchased my 2000 ford focus se from merlin motors in saskatoon. production date - may 2/2000, stock no. pp24941, r.o. no. 155631. i believe this car was previously owned by someone in british columbia. here is a chronological breakdown of repairs. april 17/01 - took car in because driver mirror vibrated badly when driving - so badly that i could not look into it, it was shaking that much. also, the trunk would not open from the release inside the car. parts were ordered at this time. vehicle kilometers- 32854. june 19/01 - they checked for driver mirror vibrating when driving and replaced driver side exterior mirror. the also checked for trunk not opening from the release inside the car, they replaced the trunk stop and adjusted. vehicle kilometers- 35222 june 20/01 - they checked for power steering leak and replaced steering rack and set toe. vehicle kilometers- 37782?? (this is obviously an error - i know i did not drive 2, 560 km in one day!) i also did not complain about the power steering and don't recall why my car was in there at the time. sept 21/01 - they repaired rattle in right front going over bumps, tightened all assemble bolts in front end, removed right caliper and rotor, lubed all bushing, adjusted front splash shields, found tie rod bolt loose and tightened. they also fixed molding on window belt, which was loose and checked inside rear view mirror and found it flawed - part on order. vehicle kilometers- 43170. nov 3/01 - we were driving in saskatoon when engine started to boil. we knew this because of steam coming from the hood, all gauges in the car read normal! we took car to merlin - they could find nothing wrong with the car after their checks, and told us to bring it back if it happened again! work order for this date states: customer saw steam coming from under hood, antifreeze pooled on engine, gauge read normal, steam coming from overflow tank - fill with a/freeze, pressure test for leaks, no leaks found.

I have nothing but grief with my 2000 focus. 1) most recently i had was traveling at 50 km/h when my front right coil spring dropped out of the front end. i phoned ford repeatedly and even though i discovered a program covering my the coil springs on i was given the run around saying that i was outside the program recall date by a few months even though the car was made at the wayne assembly plant; where other program recalls were coming from. i ended up in a field when the coil spring broke, narrowing missing the car next to me. i was thankful that i had escaped with my life but not to be covered by ford was a slap to the face. i am very upset about the way they handled this situation and i am determined to let everyone know about this situation. my alignment is also out because of the accident but can't afford to fix it right now. 2) four times since i've owned the car, the car has stalled. twice rounding a corner going onto a highway and 2 twice on a straight away highway. it always happened when the gas gauge was below 1/8 of a tank and so i thought it was my fault because i was running out of gas. of course i blamed myself. but four times ? i began to become suspicious when the car began chugging uphill on a recent long distance trip. i barely made it to my destination. when i took into a ford dealership in sudbury ontario the serviceman told me that knows of the problem though most of them came in under warranty. of course the problem at first only presented itself when the tank was near empty and so i always or nearly always made sure to have at least half a tank full of gas when driving. today the problem is present regardless of how much gas is in the car. very convenient for ford seeing as though i am outside the 60,000 km warranty plan. again i do not feel comfortable driving on the highways anymore. i am hoping that ford will hear me out a pay for the repair.

First one: ignition locked. one night after classes, i went to start my car and the key would not go into or turn the ignition lock. i called my ford warranty and they sent a tow truck. the tow truck driver informed me that he is familiar with the problem on the ford focus, as he had had many calls to pick up cars with the same problem. second one: after returning home from driving to the store one saturday, i parked as usual and tried to pull up my hand brake which would not go up or lock into place. i then noticed that the little button you push in the release the handbrake was located all the way into the assembly not allow it to lock. i plan on taking my car in november to be repaired. my ford warranty will cover it since its a few thousand miles under warranty.

Had i known about the excessive brake dust that coats on the wheels, especially the front wheels,i never would have bought this car.in order for this car to look decent i have to get on the ground on my hands and knees using a solvent and water along with a lot of elbow grease and a brush and sponge and literally clean these wheels at least once a week.a simple drive through a car wash will not clean this brake dust adequately.i have called ford three times in the last few years complaining that this is a manufacturing defect and of course they deny it!the last call i made a consumer rep from ford read from a bulletin that they put out instructing owners as to how to clean off the brake dust.if there was not a defect why are they putting it in black and white to be read? i am disgusted with their attitude and would like to return the car to the dealership but feel frustrated that they will only "laugh"at me.any advice?i will gladly take part in any class action that you might have knowledge of???

Purchased ford focus se in may of 2002 with 13,260 miles. we did not buy the extended warranty because we could not afford. soon after bringing the car home, we noticed the tire was very wobbly, and the brakes were squeaking--took it to the ford dealer and they told us these cars are notorious for brake noise, as for the tire nothing is wrong-the service dept. test drove and didn't notice a thing. have taken it in several other times after that for wobbly tire-still same answer nothing is wrong. have taken the car in for several recalls. key was stuck in ignition and had to be towed to dealership-but the next time my teenaged daughter drove the car the steering wheel was stuck when she was turning at an intersection-had it towed again, there was a piece of material (from them fixing the ignition problem) that was stuck in the steering column. our latest episode with this car is our trip from wa-virginia. the car was fine on the way there, except for the wobble in the tire in which we had the tires rotated yet again. but on our way back we started experiencing sputtering and surging of the car, we would pull off the side of the road every 20 miles (thinking it was from the hot weather), we would get another 20 miles in and same thing until finally we drove through chicago, il and it was worse, so we pulled off the highway and on to an on ramp--walked across the highway to use a business's telephone to call for a tow truck. they found us a tow truck but unfortunately it wasn't a king cab, so our insurance co., called us a cab. the tow truck took us to the nearest ford dealer--the car however seemed to running fine, so we decided to drive some more. we got about 15 miles down the road and sputtering again, so we called for another tow--and in the meantime we called firestone, we drove it there, the serviceman drove the car and felt what it was doing and said he didn't need to hook it up to engine diagnostic that it was the transmission.

Started experiencing problems with the vehicle after purchase. suddenly in august, all power systems/computer type items began to fail -- power locks, trunk release. then, car began (and still does) to sputter and shake when stopped/idle until it would shutdown. also, the radio/cd player would shut off. checked for tsbs for the vehicle model & year and found at least 15. when i took the car to the dealer (world ford sandy springs) we were told that they are technical service bulletins and that we would have to pay to have the car repaired. only official ford recall notices, not even ntsa recall notices, would be honored. on top of this, we would be expected to pay $90 per complaint batch (the tsb list was batched in to 3 main areas)for diagnostic purposes and if any of the complaints were related to a recall, the $90 would be refunded as applicable. i expressed that if ford issued a tsb and the ntsa issued a recall notice, then i should not have to pay to have the car worked on.

Let's see, where shall i begin. within month or two of purchase of 2000 focus sedan it was back in the shop for the front a panel trim. it took 3 times to finally get that right. also less than 5 months after purchase, windshield had to be replaced due to a stress fracture (was a 1-1.5 hairline crack which appeared in windshield). the windshield has since been replaced again. while adjusting the rear-view mirror the windshield cracked around the base, apparently from slight pressure of mirror. and just recently, august 2003, i've noticed water drops flying up from above the dashboard. not sure if windshield is leaking around the bottom base or maybe a.c. haven't had it checked yet, but it will be in the shop this week for other problems i haven't mentioned yet. it was in shop in late 2001 or early 2002 for throttle problems. while the car was sitting still the engine would race between 2.5 and 3000 rpms. fortunately i never used the cruise control during that time. late 2002 the trunk lock mechanism apparently broke preventing the trunk from shutting properly. it wouldn't latch at all. i have yet to have the wiper motor cover recall fixed. and on different occasions the fuel gauge has read empty, no matter how much fuel you have in the tank. and just when you think nothing else can go wrong, it happens. me and my wife were shopping this morning on labor day saturday. we got in the car and i went to start it. my key somehow would not go into the ignition completely, no matter how hard i tried. we eventually call our triple aaa insurance and arrange for a locksmith to come and take a look. he looks at it a second and declares what we fear the worst. our focus is the 7th focus this month he has seen with the same problem. he said that the ignition would have to be replaced by ford. i believe that this should be a recall. i will never buy another ford.

This is a copy of the letter i sent to ford prestige ford garland tx attn: jerry reynolds dear mr.. reynolds re: ford focus 2000 vehicle id# 1fafp34p0yw197796 i became a customer of prestige ford 5 years ago when i first bought my 98 escort. i was pleased with the car, never had any problems within the 2 years i had it only the scheduled maintenance. feb 28th 2000 i made the stupidest decision in my life to trade it for a brand new focus 2000 -i was impressed of the reviews of being the european car of the year in 1999. well during this 3 years i had nothing but trouble and i just received another safety recall. i don't even remember how many times i've taken my car back to ford for safety recalls during the last 3 years. in 3 years i had to replace brakes 3 times (that's actually once a year) replace rotors twice something got messed up last august with the electrical system and the starter i had to have that fixed. there's always noise with the brakes, i asked several times and all your staff or the one on 75 can tell me is a "known problem" first it was "metal brakes" no problem that's normal after a couple of years you changed it to a "known problem"??? i just wanted to let you know my disappointment about this stupid car, i sure did made a big mistake when i decided to buy it. also i bought extended warranty and that really seems not to be a big benefit since it hasn't helped a bit, i still had to pay for all this repairs. as far as i know this are the known problems with the car, so tell me am i supposed to be a happy camper?? i'm a single mother, i make my payments on time, i don't have the time and the money to keep spending in a car that will be paid off in a couple of years and then i will be left with a big peace of junk. please let me know when i can take my car to get fixed again. very unhappy customer guadalupe araceli ramirez

I drive 25000 miles a year to and from work approximtly 115 miles a day and 70% of that is on open interstate hiway. stop and go is less than 20 miles a day. tires completely wore out at 41000 miles. tires started humming at 10 to 15000 miles. i constly complained about front end and tire noise. i put a set of goodyear aquatred tires on at 41476 miles. they also started humming, so the front end was lined up. this did not stop the tires from humming. now car has 80000 miles, tires are scarming go down the road fast or slow. frontend suspension has been making clanking or thud type noise. just recently turing left geting off interstate it felles like the right front is changing geomitry. car turns left vilently - must corect stering. this will happens without notice. this car is extmly dangeras. when driven on ice and snow, it will brake lose when going staright for no reason and start to spin out. brakes wore out at 45000 miles. $400 to fix front brakes only. i have never had to put brakes and tires on a car at less than 50000 miles. more like 65 to 75000 miles.

The brakes have been looked at three time because of noise and it's been serviced several times. it's in service right now and has been there for two weeks. i don't know if they are working on it or if they are repairing other things or what. i haven't had heat throughout the coldest part of the winter. the seat belts don't work and the paint is peeling. the car has locked up not letting me start the engine twice, then just out of the blue it decided to start. i tried to turn in and the car dealer at ford said he wouldn't touch it, didn't want it. we bought it aug. 9 2000-ford credit, simple interest 6.5 --first payment september $456.99 a month they say we owe too much to trade in ???this made no since. now i know what's been going on. my husband has been out to sea usnavy for almost a year and i'm scared to drive it i'm a nervous wreck about this car and i don't know what to do. there has been is so many recalls on this car i don't know if they have fixed them or not
02/15/20030
I have been in the shop about 7 times during the last 3 years due to problems with my new focus. the clutch failed at 6700 miles, along with the brakes, and things got worse from there. the front windshield leaked water into the roof, the fuse on the fan/air conditioning system melted, and the brake pads were replaced numerous times. also, the fabric on the seats caused me to get shocked every time i got out of the car. ford's lack of customer service was painfully obvious as well during these repairs. i ultimately traded in my car for a competitor's car and i'm feeling much better now.

Bad brakes, leaking transmission x 2 repairs, numerous electrical probs, one "accident", damage repaired at ford expense, bad tire, noise from front rt side, "surge" prob, car seemed to "stick" in a gear. i don't have my file with me but i know there is more.

My 2000 ford focus has had problems starting 2 months after i purchased it. it's been in 6 times for excessive brake noise and or squealing. the door hinges were squeeking and had to be replaced due to misalignment..it took 5 times to determine this. weather strip molding has been replaced due to falling apart around the headlights. the cd player/stereo was replaced with a new factory model when cd player would not work properly. the "new" model was replaced yet again due to coding seen and no numbers in the window digital area. the fuel pump was replaced after stalling more than 50 miles from home...still does not run up to performance. fuel area reworked again. would not start due to battery cable. ford needs to discontinue this model until they can fix the problems it has with it. they also need to get all focus models off the road, they are safety hazzards.

Current malfunction is hesitation and engine stall and brake failure. my car is almost 2 years old and within that time period i have experienced the following malfunctions: windshield wiper, air condition, electric window, brakes, struts, rusted rotor, ignition switch, electrical shorts(flashing dash), engine hesitation/stall, blown fuses where car would not start.

Have had nothing but trouble with my focus the brakes wore down while i was on vacation and i was stuck driving for a bit on metal to metal....which ruined my rotor.....then the battery after almost 3yrs. has caused my car to not want to start twice......each time i have had to clean off the built up acid on the battery so that a clean connection can be made.....the paint keeps on chipping, my anteena has become frayed, just recently my car's steering wheel locked up on me and the key wouldn't turn in the ignition......it is in the shop as i write this.....and from what i have heard i am not the first person to have had a problem with the cylinder.......the car seems to be slugish when on the inerstate.......the focus is a dangerous car and ford co. needs to do something about it..... jeremy

Car has had the brakes serviced a total of five times and the car is stalling during acceleration. this car has been in shops for several recalls as well as twice for ignition lock failure. one of our children was trapped in rear seat by defective seat belt & had to be cut out with a knife. car stalls after it warms up. dealer says it's fuel pump but if that were so, wouldn't it stall waarm or cold. i spoke to an employee at another dealer who said ford was finding problems with sensor connected with cooling system. who do i believe? they want to charge us $700 to replace fuel pump that probably works fine.

I drive a 200o ford focus lx. i have had it stall out several times on me under normal driving conditions. at first i thought it might be me leaving it out of gear or something, but then i read a article in the newspaper stating that ford focus's have a problem with this. i brought my car to the dealership and had them look at it and they found nothing wrong with it. has anyone else had this porblem? i dont remeber where i was the article but i wish that i did... i have found several related articles about ford cars with the same problems, but mine was not listed. i am trying my best to get it fixed but when i take it in, theres no problem so they cant fix it! i will go and do anything in my powers, goto local papers, news stations, ect... if i have to! please help... do you have similar problems? lets talk...

I bought the car in june of 2000 since this time the car has had a number of recalls on the car. i feel that the people that bought the 2000 model of this car should not be liable to pay the amount the contact was signed. due to the fact that at the time the car was bought, the people that bought the car didn't know that most of the car's life would be in the shop being fixed. also ford knew that the focus was prone to this happening.

Hi, i own a 2000 ford focus and it has been nothing but trouble. i purchased the car brand new in 2000 and have had it in the shop so many times. i have had my rear passenger side window mechanism replaced by ford, then personally replaced the driver front window mechanism and the driver back mechanism due to cable breaks. i have had it in with the radio 3 times and it still does not work correctly. i have had to have the brakes replaced, the ignition block replaced, the struts and shocks. the trunk release has never worked. now it keeps breaking down on me if i drive for more than 1 hour non stop. this weekend i went to san antonio from corpus, it died on the highway 3 times going to sa and coming home 4 times & how safe is that! ford said they cannot do anything for me unless it is messing up when i bring it in while it is acting up, however it always happens when i am away from town. they told me that if they hook it up to the machine it will not tell them anything. also, on several occasions my accelerator has stuck and i cannot brake, i have to put the car in neutral and press on the brake hard while the rpm's are still revving and pull the emergency brake, the first time this happened i was pulling into a parking spot and went over the yellow divider. is there anything i can do? *la

I own a 2000 ford focus. currently i am experiencing several problems. the first is the air conditioning a/c. the a/c works on the #4 setting but doesn't work on #1, #2, or #3. no air comes from the air vents when the fan is set to 1, 2, or 3 whether the a/c is on or not. the second problem is the brakes. i have less than 46,000 miles on the car, and the brakes feel like they are going out. i've never had to replace the brakes on a car before 70,000 miles. the third problem is comprised of the gauges. when i start my car, all the gauges go immediately to the right. after a few moments they return to their proper position, but i'm not sure what is going on. i feel that if i put the car in gear during this period, that i will lose control of the vehicle and it may surge forward. the fourth problem is that i have already had to replace all of the tires on this vehicle. the fifth problem is the transmission/engine. many times, especially in the idle position (at a stop sign, etc.), i feel that the engine is going to stall. it almost feels like the engine is not running on all cylinders. the sixth problem, and probably not the last, is that i've already had to deal with all of the recalls on this vehicle, and yet this car is still unsafe and ford has done nothing to correct this except offer a 5 year/100,000 mile warranty to new ford focus buyers.*ak

Constant squeaking noise when the brakes are applied. i've already replaced the rotors, brakes, brake pads, and drums on several occasions since buying this focus about 3 years ago. also my steering wheel locked on me one day in april of 2002 the key would not fit into the ignition to start the car i have no idea why this would happen from one day to another. i had my vehicle towed to the ford dealership and they didn't know what the problem was caused by. they said that they needed to update the lock cylinder. luckily i purchased the api extended warranty that cover the car for 100,000 miles. so the cost of the work done for this was $427.20. all but $50.00 of which was my deductible was cover by this warranty. the problems didn't stop here. i also have had to get the cd systems that came installed in the car replaced. the was a constant clicking noise with the cd player and 90% of the time the cd's wouldn't even play. i called the dealership and they said that they could replace it for me but that it wouldn't be coverer by the warranty so i would have to pay for it out of my pocket. i ended up having a new system installed but not from the ford dealership, i took it to circuit city. recently this month july 2003, my car has been staling and shutting off at stop signals and stop light also just shut completely off on the freeway thank god no accident occurred. i called the dealership to report this problem also my check engine light would come on and off several times and they said to bring it in and they would check the engine light but that i would have to pay $165. 00 just for them to check the light and it would be more $$$ to repair what ever problem it was. i was fed up by then. *ph

Gas mileage is poor on this size veh--motor kicks into neutral while driving at higher speeds. dealer keeps telling me there is no problem/cannot duplicate, 4 incidents, this is very freighting. especially in heavy traffic & cannot get off the road fast. brakes wear between 16000 and 18000 miles with normal driving. the motor belt had to be replaced at 22000 miles. this never happened so soon with any vehicle i have ever owned. repairs and services are very expensive, many safety recalls and product warnings that take time to repair. the dealer has a problem making sure the parts are available when i make an appointment. the wheel bearings have been replaced several times and sound like they may be going bad again! i do not feel safe in this vehicle. what if something fails while myself or my family are in this vehicle. this vehicle has depreciated at such a drastic rate, that i would be wise to trade it for another vehicle. i feel it is in direct relation to all the safety issues with this vehicle. *ph **dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut over to artemis**763169

Other than the recalls and the brakes squeaking constantly, everything was fine with my 2000 focus up until 1 month after the warranty expired. almost one month to the day, the instrument cluster stopped working. ford would replace it at a cost of at least $500, so i replaced it myself by ordering a part on line for a total of $45. a couple of months later, the ignition cylinder would not allow the key to fit all the way in and as a result the car was not able to start, resulting in a cost of around $300 to replace. i am beginning to see the stalling problem from the faulty fuel pump. now my automatic door locks and trunk release just stopped working and the car is making a very odd grinding noise when you turn. it would be one thing if i was the only one with these problems, but the facts are out there and many, many, many people are all having the exact same problems! i have written to ford main offices and my local ford dealership serveral times on these matters and i have never heard anything back. i honestly am never buying a ford vehicle again.*ak

I have a 2000 ford focus that i have had allot of problems with. i specially ordered this car to have all the safety features including side impact air bags, and anti loc brakes. we originally had bought the car in ca. the first problem happened at 3000 miles the rear brakes started squealing, and the seat belt buzzer wont go off. we took it to ford were they said nothing was wrong. we moved to nc were we now live. took it back to ford with the same complaint this now 30,000 miles. they said they were defective, they had the car over night for the seat belt buzzer, still no problem found. so they replaced the brakes. when we picked up the car the seat belt buzzer did the job of staying on for us. it stopped the squeal problem with the brakes. 1 1/2 weeks later we had an accident. whitch i might add the air bags did not go off. also in the accident the rear seat came unhinged and threw a plastic piece that holds the seatbelt at the back of her head causing a lump. my wife said the brakes just didn't work as they did previously with the noise. i took it out for a test drive found the brakes were not acting right, the car would not stop properly. took it back to ford, they told us that everything was fine. a friend of ours was a ford mechanic at a different dealership was going to look at it for us, he was killed that week in a car accident un-related. so we lost our inside mechanic to tell us what was really happening. now at 50,000 miles the noise is back, my wife who drives the vehicle says every once in a while the brakes will act up again. now we just don't have the time nor the patients to deal with the dealerships once again for now the fan blower only works on 3 on the dial and the cable broke to select def, vents, ect. along with the recall of the wiper motor, and the neeeding of new roters on the front. this car to me is a lemon.

On 10/23/07 i inserted key into ignition of my ford focus and immediatley the lights and gauges went haywire-vehicle failed to start. to make a long story short ,after unpluging the battery cables and going back to the stranded car the next evening, it started . 2 days later my wipers came on by themselves and would not stop until i turned the car off and restarted. on 10/31/07 while driving my daughter home, the vehicle began accelerating and deccelertaing uncontrollably. i pulled of the highway and when i opened the drivers door, the seatbelt light began blinking and making a loud ticking noise. this had happened the night prior, but i thought maybe the button was depressed. my dome lights make a screeching noise and blink on and off. this is a serious problem that needs to be looked into. whenever something like this happens i am driving home late at night and of course the dealer is not open to help me . my car is almost paid off and i will not invest more than what it is worth, which is only about $2,500.too bad i have paid about $18,000 for it. i would also like to know why i have not received recalls for the following problems: 1. 1st month after purchase, electrical system running airbags, mirrors, doors etc. failed. 2. 37,000 miles- transmission failed 3. 42,000 miles- power door locks failed and soon after passenger doors stuck in the lock position. 4. all window tracks have failed. 5. wheel bearings replaced. 6. trunk latch failed 7. ignition failed and was replaced and is going again. 8. brought in for 1 recall (fuel filter) and still didn't correct problem with vibration and lurching. this is a vehicle that exceeds highway saftey ratings? something will be done about this if i must hire an attorney- i am out a lot of money and no vehicle. *tr

Since purchased. on four separate occasions my car has stopped while driving. here is a brief rundown of additional physical problems ive had with the car, which include but are not limited to:3 months: the emergency brake went out. the brakes had to be replaced (2 times). the gas gauge stuck on empty (twice). i felt a constant pulsating on the clutch. the dealer told me that all new cars have that for up to 3 months while they get used to new chemicals running through their system. nearly 2 years later, the pulsating is still there. the car exploded. i parked my car on a hill, with the emergency brake up. then i heard some clicking and a large boom. i turned around to see sparks and smoke pouring out of my hood, a horrible smell engulfed the neighborhood, and my car (with the emergency brake up) was rolling down a hill towards an intersection. the oil pressure united had to be replaced. there was a problem with the clutch. the car trunk would not open. 6 months: the brakes had to be replaced again. they still squeaked excessively. they still sounded like they were scrapping. i took it back in to a dealership and they told me the 2000 ford focus had a brake problem and there was nothing that could be done about it. even after replaced, the brakes would take much pressure before coming to a stop and would squeak. the trunk would sometimes not shut. the emergency brake would not always work. the front tire kept going flat. ford said it was my driving. i paid to have it replaced and the new tire kept going flat. they said the new tire was defective and replaced it and the stem. w/in the first 2 years: on at least 11 occasions the car would not start until turned over a couple of times. the car has low pick up. the check engine light was stuck on. engine light was stuck on. the gas tank needed a new part. the stick will not always go into reverse. when the heat is on for over 15 or so minutes a heavy burning smell in car. bearings/shock problem.*ak

Six weeks previously, engine stalled on freeway. dealer said couldn't find a problem and let them know if it happened again. 5/31/02 could not get car to go; had towed to dealer. after several days they finally thought it was the air intake valve causing the problem. today i hear about the focus stalling problem possibly being caused by debris in gas tank. i am afraid to drive this car for fear it will stall again on the freeway. i was lucky the last time that i was able to coast to the shoulder and did not get into a crash. i was able to re-start the car and get it off the freeway. other continuing problems that i have had the dealer fix over 3 times each: squeaking brakes and molding around the doors falling off.

Front brakes have been squealing since the car has had a brake job under one year out of the showroom. the first brake job done by team ford was necessary at under 20,000 miles indicating premature wear and possibly defective from factory disc brakes. many other focus owners are having this same problem. the brakes still squealed after the brake job and now in less then 2 years of ownership the brakes again needed new pads installed and also the rotors needed replacemant. this costs over 350.00. all this in under two years and below 30,000 miles on a new car. now my ase certified mechanic states that all the wheel bearings need to be replaced still the car had at that point less than 30,000 miles on it. when i presented the car to friendly ford of las vegas nevada, for bearing inspection under warranty, they declined to inspect the bearings and told me to bring my business elsewhere. this is non performance of warranty which covers (supposedly) defects for 3 years or 36000 miles. friendly ford and their service manager rob refuses to give under warranty service for the defective bearings and the cost of two brake jobs done by certified mechanics at premature wear levels was borne by us the owners. ford offers poor customer service and refuses to honor a valid warranty.*ak

When ever there is moisture in the air (rain, snow, etc) the rear wheels (brakes) seize up on the vehicle. both sides are affected. the wheels drag until the seal is broken and the wheels can spin freely again. this has happened numerous times. any slight bit of moisture and the vehicle to stay parked for at least one day causes the seizure of the wheels. once the wheels are freed, there does not seem to be any other noticeable effect in driving. wheels have sometimes dragged up to 20 feet before freeing, other times they break free in a couple of feet.*ak

As a final gesture of goodwill, our local dealership's customer service representative offered us a 24 hour period to consider a $2,000 trade-in credit toward the purchase of a new ford vehicle at 0% financing. this would have more than doubled my daughter's monthly car and insurance payments. because her job was not yet a permanent position, she was not in a position to take a $4,000 loss and double her monthly payments. once that offer had expired we were met with stony indifference by our local dealership's customer service representative. after several conversations with him we came away convinced that ford customer service policies are intentionally designed with several goals in mind: 1) to offer one's local dealership as the only path of recourse other than a nation-wide 1 (800) customer service line; 2) to staunchly refuse to provide the names and mailing addresses of ford customer service representatives at the local level and/or regional level; and 3) to discourage mailings to the national customer service representative (michael jordan) or ceo (william clay ford) with comments such as don't waste your time, they don't even open their mail. the end result is that the car owner feels totally powerless once the goodwill of their dealership's in-house customer service representative has run out. when combined with holding open a 24-hour trade-in offer toward a more expensive ford vehicle, the end result was a psychologically oppressive hard-sell tactic.no safety defect listed. *ak

To whom it may concern: i am writing in regards to the faulty brake system on my 2000 ford focus. when i first purchased the car, i noticed that the brakes made a squeaking sound. i was told that ford factory brakes always squeak and so i thought that this was a normal thing for this model car. it wasn't until the brakes stopped squeaking and began to squeal and grate that i began to be concerned. it is for this reason that i am contacting you. i think it is outrageous that a car with just over 31,000 miles should have needed new brake pads and rotors! what a disappointment! i have become very disillusioned about the quality of the craftsmanship of ford vehicles. in my research about the problem i was experiencing, i discovered that i am far from the only person with this difficulty. in fact, i came across a website devoted to ford focus brake problems. i would request that you take this complaint very seriously and research this issue yourselves. it cost me $248.00 to deal with this today, and i understand from others' experiences that it is likely that these new brakes will do the same as the old. i am frustrated and nervous. i have a very small child whom i transport in this vehicle and would be devastated if these faulty brakes and rotors contributed to an accident or worse.*ak

These are the probelems with my car. it is only 8 months old, yet this car has had repeated problems. the first major problem is with the brakes. they continually squeak and i was told by ford that it was due to a safety issue. the brakes and pads were replaced yet the problem has continued since. i have also made numerous complaints and had the breaks deglazed and serviced many times only to have the problems continue. the next problem is with the ventalation. the engine strongly smells of burning oil/fuel. this problem was checked and fixed three times, but this problem also continues. the smell is so strong inside the car that passengers now refuse to ride in the vehicle. the smell is also very strong from out side the car. the third problem with the vehicle is with the driver's side door. the lock and latch are very tight and are some times imbossible to turn or open without exessive force. the door hinges are also stiff. this is a lot of friction in the hinges making lots of noise and not allowing the door to move smothley. the last problem i am reporting is with the suspension. this problem has been fixed more than 5 times and it is still a very big problem. new parts have been put in and the squeaking and humming is still very loud. there are also loud clanking noises coming from the suspension.*ak

I sent this letter to ford in may of 2000 i purchased a ford focus, thinking it would be a safe, low maintenance car, considering it had been in europe since 1997. i would think this would be plenty of time to work out any bugs you may have. or, should i call them recalls. i think a car that has 16 recalls, most of them which i would consider safety issues, should be recalled entirely. i have had other issues with this car as well. my key would not turn, seat belts locking for no reason, door handles not opening the door (this is all happening again). and one that has not been addressed, brakes. i am now on my third set of front rotors since i have purchased the car. the same thing has happened every time. the driver side rotor and pad will wear completely down yet the passenger side will be just fine. i have talked to other focus owners and the same thing is happening. i still have my last set of rotors just to prove it. i got smart this time and bought replacements that were not made by you. stop tech cross drilled rotors and ebc greenstuff kevlar pads. i also replaced the driver side caliper with a non-ford replacement. i want out of this car because i feel it is unsafe. i also would like to warn other focus owners that this car is unsafe. you also had better not send me to the dealership again. what does the dealership have to do with the production of an unsafe car? nothing, except that they sell it. i am not putting up with ford pushing me around or giving me the run around either. this car is extremely unsafe and should not be on the road. i did not do this before but this time you leave me no choice. this letter will be sent to as many bad product websites as i can find. it will also be sent to nhtsa, consumer reports and the better business bureau. you did not do anything with my previous complaint and now there are more issues with this product that not only concern safety, but the life of the car. something will be done.*jb

My daughter was so excited to buy her first car. i'm not sure why but she chose a ford focus and qualified for a first time buyer program. after a few months she started having brake problems. it got so bad she the car to the dealer for repair. they said the noise was normal. later she took it in and they told her the brake pads were warped because she drove through water and that the warranty would not cover it. next time she went in for warranty service she complained about the brakes and they said there was nothing they could do about it. shortly thereafter she had a one-vehicle wreck. she was not hurt but the car was badly damaged. after three estimates we took it to a local body shop with a good reputation for quality work. the accident was due to the lack of adaquate brakes at a stop sign. at a little over 20,000 miles she began having more serious brake problems. again she took it to the dealer who told her the brake pads were bad and the rotors needed replacing. (at 20,000 miles) they offered to do the $400+ job for a 12% discount since the job was not covered under warranty. she took it to a brake specialist who did the job for about $200. add all the brake problems and the problems with the passenger door that leaked (they fixed it several times. it still leaks. actually, this cute little blue ford focus should have been painted lemon yellow. another thing - when she took the car in she took a friend with her to drive her to work. during the conversation with the service manager about the problems he, and i quote, told them to shut up - he would not be double teamed. they do not teach that in customer relation school, do they? do you think this same dealer would take it in for a trade in?*ak

The car was taken in on 07/17/00 for making a load squeaking noise everytime you come to a complete stop. the car was returned the same evening but upon inspection the squeaking noise had not been fixed. the mechanic explained that they had been seeing allot of focus's with squeaky brakes and he had deglazed the rear drums and chamfered the brake pads for a corrective action. he said that if i drive the car for a couple of days the noise may go away after what he had done. and if the noise did not go away come back in and they would replace the brake pads. the noise did not go away and i returned the car to the dealership on 07/20/00 and was informed that it would be approximately a week before i would get my car back. the dealership representatives also tried to tell me that what they were doing was basically costumer p.r. and that if the noise doesn't go away i may just have to put up with it. as this issue is a direct result of the brake pads being made of new metal alloys instead of asbestos. my response was: than why aren't all of your cars on the lot squeaking when they stop and why don't i hear other new cars making the same noise.? i got no real response to my inquiry other than the same statement that there may not be anything they can do. i am conerned that they do not know what is wrong and i could experience some type of brake failure later on if they don't fix this problem. *ak

We had to place the 6th set of tires on our car. we haven't had a single set of tires last longer than 20,000 miles. we have our tires rotated and balanced and front-end aligned regularly. we have replaced the front brake pads 5 times. we have had all 5 recalls repaired on the car. when i had the rear bearing replaced under warranty the technician told me that they had to order emergency bearings overnight because it was not safe to drive. when i inquired about a rental car, he offered to reassemble my car and let me drive it home (even though it was unsafe)! this has always been a loud car, but a week ago there was a loud roaring, grinding noise up front that gets especially loud when i turn to the right. after having a technician look at it, he says the front bearings are gone and the front rotors and brake pads also need to be replaced again. i am in the same situation as everyone else: because this car has had so many problems and complaints it is only valuing at $3000 after 3 years. ford should be forced to do something to satisfy all of these dissatisfied customers. *la

-2000 ford focus lx - bought used on april 14th. both interior and exterior of car in excellent condition, ran extremely well, one owner repo, clean title. -was rear-ended in very low speed, low impact collision, no frame buckling, bending, or damage to car other than scratched rear bumper - truck lid will not latch now. multiple mechanics and appraisers - unable to find problem. -while driving, dash gauges and car speakers will suddenly stop working (speedometer goes to 0, odometer goes blank, fuel gauge goes to 0) and then spontaneously come back on with no after effects. car stalled while stopping after one of these episodes. occasionally when car is started, the odometer will spontaneously reset without prompting (not the main one, the resetable one). -random codes being thrown to computer - car has had two diagnostics run in two weeks, the first for two codes: 1. a mechanical issue, 2. for electrical difficulties in the dashboard - the car was thoroughly inspected and no defects were found. seven days later the computer reported an evaporative system leak - once again the car was thoroughly inspected and no defects were found. after the first diagnostic, a rear brake light went out - after removing the light and fiddling with the wiring, the mechanic got its normal function to resume. -the car has 36,000 miles, i had the brakes inspected the day after the car started shaking violently when i pressed the brake pedal. the rotors are warped terribly and i will have to have the entire brake system replaced, including the rear drums - i do not consider this normal, especially in such a young car. -it has had two recalls filled in the last month, one for a pinch bolt and the other for a wheel bearing. no other recall campaigns were open. these problems have continued since the recalls were completed. -i've owned this car for less than a month. the cars pre-purchase inspection came up clean. the car is no longer under any kind of factory warranty.*jb

Front brakes began to squeel. upon inspection at brake shop it was found that although the front pads were in good shape, both front rotors were warped and needed replacement. vehicle was purchased from the ford dealer approximately 10,000 miles ago. the right rear brake drum also needed replacement because of excessive wear. the vehicle had been into ford for a recall on the rear bearings at 23,757 miles at which time the rear drums were removed but apparently the drums were not warped or the mechanic did not inspect prior to replacement. these problems are apparently common to the focus as documented at www.fordfocusbrakeproblems.com, which includes reports of total brake failure at very low mileage. nlm

*ph

*ak

For almost one month, loud humming in front right and both rear wheels and loud rear squeaking on braking revealed, after 4/20/06 inspection, failed wheel bearings in our ford focus se 2000 in right front and both rear wheels. both rear cylinders were leaking fluid and right brake drum was failing. many of the ford focus vins issued during 2000-2001 manufacturing years had wheel-bearing failure issues and consequent recalls. we were informed by maria at ford motor company, today that our vin was not one that had a wheel bearing issue. how, then, could three of our four sets of wheel bearings fail? ultimately, failed wheel bearings can lead to wheel failure and detachment leading to injury or death. why isn't the nhtsa addressing this serious issue with ford, as the manufacturer appears to be sidestepping its ethical and legal responsibility in this matter. we spent over $1,000 on this repair. nine months ago, our front coil springs failed, which could also have led to a fatality. ford assisted us then, but is doing nothing to help us now. please note that because on ongoing teamsters strike, most ford dealer shops were unavailable to service customer service or supply needs at the time we sought service. we seek reimbursement for repair of wheel bearings, rear drums and cylinders/lining. wheel bearing service reimbursement is essential. *jb

My 2000 ford focus would not start on 6/29/05 so i had it towed to town & country ford on 6/30/05. prior to the tow truck leaving, i checked the lights, horn, etc to make sure all worked before ford worked on the car. they did. when they service man johnny gardner called me that afternoon to tell me what was wrong with the vehicle he stated the ground scrap wire , and ignition switch need to be repaired i told him that was impossible about the ignition switch when i had it repaired 1 month earlier. johnny then changed the story stating just the ground scrap wire needs to be repaired. i had them fix that part and went to pick up the car. while driving down the street a car swerved into my lane and when i went to blow my horn it did not work. i slowed down and my brakes made a hard grinding noise. i immediately called town & country ford asking them why was my car horn not working, and the brakes were making a grinding noise. they replied i could bring the car back and pay to have it fixed. i took the car to an independent auto repair shop who stated the horn could not be fixed because someone unhooked the componets under the hood, and to fix it ford can only get the parts. they also told me that the axle on my right brake wheel was split. prior to taking this car to town & country ford i had no brake problems. i was told by town & country ford to check my replace the relay switch to the horn. i did and the headlights, interior lights, and windshield wipers do not work. the car will not go in reverse. my car was fine prior to town & country ford's work. *jb

Within two weeks of purchasing the 2000 ford focus the air bag sensor broke, the brakes began to squeal and less than a month later the ignition locked. the car cannot be started or moved due to the locked ignition. nothing was done about the brakes. the airbag light was replaced at a cost to me of $280.27. the ignition has not been repaired or addressed by the dealer. *nm

Since the purchase of my ford focus 2000, it has been subjected to recalls for wheel bearings, paneling, and the master cylinder. additionally, the trunk latch had to be replaced and the computer reprogrammed. since late sept. 2000, the engine dies at approx. 45/mph when i press the clutch to downshift from 5th gear, slowing from a higher speed. on aug. 21, 2001, i took the the car to maroone ford in margate, florida because it had stall (died) twice in one day. the mechanic said there was nothing wrong with the car and said that i didn't know how to drive it properly. i contacted ford motor dispute settlement board and they came out and drove with me. the car did not stall at that time, and he advised me that i didn't know how to drive the car! i believe i have been lied to by ford and by their representative, maroone ford, margate. i have copies of letters that i sent to maroone ford, and to the board of directors at maroone ford as well as a copy of the initial dispute settlement board application. i have complained over and over again that i fear for my safety, and that i want ford to either fix my vehicle or give me a safe car. i was a full-time nursing student at florida atlantic university in boca raton, florida when this started, i am now a registered nurse still driving an unsafe vehicle. i would appreciate your help.*ak

Dt: the consumer stated there were multiple problems with the vehicle. the brakes make noises and pulsated when the pedal was depressed. the vehicle was taken to the service dealer where the brake light switch and ignition cylinder switches were replaced. the dealer also turned the drums, replaced the brake pads and resurfaced the front rotors. there was a vibration in the front end when braking. the lower ball joint, right wheel bearings, right front sway bar link, bone socket, steering rack column and tie rod ends were replaced in an attempt to remedy the problem. the tail light covers retained moisture and condensation built up. the dealer replaced the tail light covers and fuses that were blown due to the moisture. lastly, the contact noticed the rear seat was loose and upon inspection the dealer discovered an anchor and hinge problem. the back hinge and pillar were replaced. *jb
