I was on my way to work when thankfully i decided to stop at the gas station and get gas. as i was getting out of my car i lightly tapped the steering wheel and it popped off. i freaked out and looked at was happened all my steering wheel was hanging by was the wires to my horn and airbag. i had to get it towed back to my house. i called ford headquaters and took it to the dealership and asked if they could fix it for free since there are recalls on that car. they refused and stated its my responsibility to fix the car outside of the warranty stage. i understand that but it's not like it's something little that broke or something inside the engine. it's the steering wheel. you can't drive without that and that's never supposed to break. i'm so upset no body even tried to help me at ford. i'm never buying one again.

The ignition on my 2000 ford focus is defective in that the key does not go all the way into the ingtition. this problem appears to be systemic with the focus. the car is stranded in the path of oncoming cars and presents a danger to the public. systemic issues across a large span of vin numbers present a safety issue and a general public nussiance. cars are stranded in intersections and places of business because of defective ignitions that are known to ford. these issues are on blog sites in large numbers. i trust the transportation and safety board will recognize the significance of this problem. i am requesting an investigation that i am sure will reveal public safety concerns by the sheer number of incidents of this ignition failure.

Key will not turn in ignition. apparently, this is a known defect with ford focus models from the year 2000. there is nothing that precipitates the problem- it just doesn't work all of a sudden. luckily, the car was parked at my office building- but it could have happened anywhere. i called a locksmith and he came and replaced the ignition. he said that there is no guarantee that it won't happen again. *tr

Faulty ignition switch. the same major problem everyone else is having with the ford focuses. ignition cylinder locked up on me without warning. stopped to get gas and when i went to put key back into ignition it wouldn't even go in at first. i though i was in the wrong car. finally forced key in ignition. it took me a long time but i fortunately was able to finally jiggle it free and get engine started. first warning sign was in 2006 when it temporarily gave me a problem, but now it was being a constant problem. i had done my research on the internet as well and called around to different locksmiths. i was able to drive veh to a locksmith and have a new ignition cylinder replaced. they did not have to reprogram the keys as i see ford is charging all of these people besides their ridiculous labor on their defective parts, in which they are still replacing defective parts. it cost me under $100 to have repaired with reassurance the ignition would outlast any keys that i have to the veh. ford is pathetic for not admitting this defect and having a recall. yes it is a safety issue!!!!!! when you never know that unsuspecting your keys lock up and won't turn the ignition. *tr

My key won't turn in the ignition. therefore i had to pay $140 to tow my car back home. i researched the problem and i see that there are thousands of the same complaints all over the internet with the same make and model of my vehicle. 2000 ford focus. i haven't taken it to the dealership yet, because it is not under warranty anymore, and according to the stories that i have read, they will not do anything about it, except charge me for a new one. i honestly think that there should be a factory recall on this part, because of me and the thousands of people that this has affected. *nm

First one: ignition locked. one night after classes, i went to start my car and the key would not go into or turn the ignition lock. i called my ford warranty and they sent a tow truck. the tow truck driver informed me that he is familiar with the problem on the ford focus, as he had had many calls to pick up cars with the same problem. second one: after returning home from driving to the store one saturday, i parked as usual and tried to pull up my hand brake which would not go up or lock into place. i then noticed that the little button you push in the release the handbrake was located all the way into the assembly not allow it to lock. i plan on taking my car in november to be repaired. my ford warranty will cover it since its a few thousand miles under warranty.

At the end of february i was involved in an accident due to the steering locking up my ford has never ran the same since our local ford dealer sent a mechanic out to do a report on my vehicle and nothing was ever resolved now i am stuck with this car that seems to be the next ford joke. i have made several complaints since the accident and thanks to a possible steering knuckle problem in which was worked on previously to the accident it looks like ford really should consider selling to a reputable company.

Extreme amount of problems and recalls, vehicle has low mileage. in addition to listed problems, severe rear tire cupping at 7000 miles, may be attributed to loose rear wheel bearing. power steering pressure hose leaking, a/c still not fixed correctly cold lasted for about a month drivers door lock wont lock interm. rear trunk latch wont release from inside car. fuel gauge erratic, caused driver to run out of gas on a bridge. maf sensor failure, caused driver to be limited to 15 mph on freeway till next exit. vheicles radio stuck on with key removed causing battery drain---happened twice and was fixed. vehicle is a lease due back for return in august. cant wait to be rid of this headache but feel sorry for whoever buys it... i would still like ford motor co to reimburse me for the lease payments made for the amount of downtime and time vehicle spent at the dealership to fix some of these problems......thankyou

I have a 2000 ford focus and my steering column locked up in december of 2002. i took it to a ford dealership and they replaced the ignition. i have been having on and off problems with my steering wheel locking and the key not turning to unlock it. luckily before february 16, 2004 i was able to keep trying and finally unlock it. it is now locked again and the same ford dealership is saying that i will have to pay again to get it fixed and that the part was had a warranty of 12 months or 12000 miles. my parents have a 1988 ford escort gt my father has a 1994 ford mustang gt and my mother has a 1997 acura and haven't had any problems with the steering locking up. i believe that something is defective in the 2000 ford focus causing the lock up and that ford should have a recall on this because i shouldn't have to replace the ignition every year. *jb

Constant squeaking noise when the brakes are applied. i've already replaced the rotors, brakes, brake pads, and drums on several occasions since buying this focus about 3 years ago. also my steering wheel locked on me one day in april of 2002 the key would not fit into the ignition to start the car i have no idea why this would happen from one day to another. i had my vehicle towed to the ford dealership and they didn't know what the problem was caused by. they said that they needed to update the lock cylinder. luckily i purchased the api extended warranty that cover the car for 100,000 miles. so the cost of the work done for this was $427.20. all but $50.00 of which was my deductible was cover by this warranty. the problems didn't stop here. i also have had to get the cd systems that came installed in the car replaced. the was a constant clicking noise with the cd player and 90% of the time the cd's wouldn't even play. i called the dealership and they said that they could replace it for me but that it wouldn't be coverer by the warranty so i would have to pay for it out of my pocket. i ended up having a new system installed but not from the ford dealership, i took it to circuit city. recently this month july 2003, my car has been staling and shutting off at stop signals and stop light also just shut completely off on the freeway thank god no accident occurred. i called the dealership to report this problem also my check engine light would come on and off several times and they said to bring it in and they would check the engine light but that i would have to pay $165. 00 just for them to check the light and it would be more $$$ to repair what ever problem it was. i was fed up by then. *ph

 1. there were two instances over the past 3 years where my car wouldn't start initially and it took 15 minutes to finally be able to turn the key. 2. i stopped at a gas station to fill up my car which is a 2000 ford focus zx3. i had may 7 year old daughter with me and when we went to leave my ignition locked up. after an hour i had to call someone to come get my daughter as it was 9pm and she had school in the morning. i had someone else come by to see if they could fix it but that was to no avail. finally after about 3 hours total i had to call a for a tow back to my house as the steering wheel was locked up and i could not even roll the car out of the way because i couldn't turn the wheel to get around the gas pumps. i searched online to see about a recall due to this cars history and to my amazement i found web forum after web forum of complaints about this issue. all you have to do is search the web for ford focus ignition lock and you'll see what i mean. this is definitely an issue and can be potentially very dangerous. being stuck and unable to put your car in neutral and move it to the left or right and out of the way, being stuck in extreme weather conditions...possibly with a child or even just being stuck for hours at a time. i read on instance were a women wasn't able to get towed for 6 hours and read another example of a man who had rented a focus only to have it lock up while at a rest area on the highway. it appears that ford is simply ignoring this fault and it's costing people $400-$500 every occurrence. some people have had to pay to have it replaced 3 times or more. please look into this and try to do something about it. it has been a serious issue. 3. i have get the car towed to a dealer to pay the $400 to have it fixed and hope it doesn't happen again or i can find a locksmith who can come to my house, drill out the ignition and replace it which is cheaper than the dealership but not by much. *tr

Fatality vehicle fire, dec. 8 2004. my husband is the original owner of a 2000 ford focus, subject to numerous service visits to bill brown ford, livonia mi for: ignition, steering column, wheel bearing, brake, rear window control, seat belt &trunk latches, overhead light and engine light. the vacuum line & fuel pump & valve assembly were replaced 2/03, followed by stalling. in 6/03, a/c compressor & manifold line replaced. fuel line & pump failure in 8/03, resulted in gasoline spill on residential street minutes after parking. bogging followed repairs, pcm reprogrammed & leaking pvc tube replaced 1/04. fuel pump again replaced. in 8/04, our 24 year old son took ownership of this problematic car. we are uncertain as to whether vehicle malfunction caused a 35 mph collision with a fire hydrant. an immediate engine explosion and fuel fed fire trapped my son and his passenger. described by police as a relatively minor crash which would not be expected to claim lives, the subsequent unexplained engine fire claimed two young lives. a malfunctioning driver's airbag was also detected. this incident was originally reported to nhtsa by my husband (#10104088). i am supplying these additional facts for your clarification. please correct your posting of 0 injuries as there were 2 fatalities. please take effective action to save lives, as these trouble plagued vehicles seem to become more lethal as they age. confirmation of receipt of this information is requested. *nm *sc *jb

I am out-of-state in a large city and yesterday my key would go into the ignition, but would not turn. i had to leave my car overnight in a fairly bad neighborhood. i have seen a lot of reports on this site about the same thing going wrong in the focus. i am having the car towed to a dealership today and will have to pay a holiday fee because today is a holiday and in the mean time have no form of transportation. i will have to rent a car tomorrow (the rental car places are closed for the holiday). i just went on a 4,000 mile trip, some of which went through very desolate parts of nevada--what would have happened if this would have happened then??? i had no cell reception in most of that area. if ford doesn't think this is a safety issue, they are wrong. i have already had the fuel delivery module replaced due to its failure. luckily, it was covered under a recall. because of the ignition problem, i will incure a towing bill, the repair bill, and a rental car fee, not to mention the huge inconvenience and stress. i expect the totally cost to be $500+. i hope that ford recalls this problem, as i do think this is a safety issue. they need to stand behind their product, and it seems as though they are not willing to do so. if they don't change their ways, i will surely never buy a ford vehicle again.*ak

For the past week, i have had trouble turning the key in the ignition. it's as if the ignition is locked, along with the steering wheel. i had been able to move the key back and forth and have been successful in getting the key to turn (actually turn so the car could start). today, however, no amount of 'jimmying' did the trick. the ignition was locked and the key would simply not turn - at all (even after i tapped the key into the ignition with my palm as i turned the key as recommended by a ford service mechanic). subsequently, i had to have the car towed to the town and country ford in portland, or so they could replace the entire ignition cylinder. this is costing me around $290!. i have read other similar complaints, and the tow truck driver - who also owns a ford focus zx3 - has been having similar problems. despite this, ford has not 'recalled' this faulty ignition cylinder and i feel this requires further investigation and, at the least, compensation by ford. *jb

I parked my car and shut it off. when i came back to start my car i could put the key in, but not turn it. when i called ford they new of the issue and the service manger told me the following info it it:*ak it is designed so badly that even a perfectly new one can jam. in most lock cylinders the tumblers are pushed by springs to lock against an outer sleeve, and the key pushes them back in. with the focus they added a locking bar as 90 degrees to the tumblers, and that is what locks the sleeve instead of the tumblers. the problem is there is no solid connection between the key and this locking bar. it is only pushed by the tiny tumbler springs, wich easily jam. so the only current permenant solution is to remove all the tumblers. but since they cannot do this, they have to replace them as they come in, but they still break after replacement at my cost of almost $500.00. if ford knows of this issue why do they not fix this!

The ignition of my 2000 ford focus has frozen repeatedly only to start working again several minutes later. it recently has not started working again and i am having to pay $200 to have the ignition replaced. this i dismissed as simply one of the down sides of buying a used car. however, after searching forums online and speaking with a local dealership i have found that this is a common problem with all 2000/2001 ford focus models. the person who came to tow my car to the dealership informed me that he responds to 10-15 calls a week due to the same exact problems with this make and year of vehicle. i was directed to the nhtsa website by one of the internet forums and was shocked to find how many defects had been sited with this particular car make/model however, this was not amoung them. this appears to be the most common problem occuring with this make/model of car as well. i just hope to never be in a situation where i need to be somewhere asap and my ignition suddenly decides not to turn.*ak

The securikey ignition cylinder is subject to repeated failures. initially the ignition will not turn until the steering wheel is wiggled. then after a time, the unit fails completely. this does pose a problem when attempting to restart the vehicle after a panic stop, where the engine stall/stops. especially un-nerving in traffice. 1st failure 9/30/2001 at 18,990 miles. lock cylinder was replaced. 2nd complete failure 1/9/2004 at 49,400 miles. currently the vehicle is experiencing the same problems and i am returning it to the ford service shop for another repair. the manager of the same shop stated that this is a common problem with this model year, 2000 ford focus, but that one replacement usually fixes the problem. i suspect there are no return visits since the prudent consumer would probably dump the vehicle in favor of a more reliable auto.*ak

I bought my ford focus 2000, brand new in july of 2000. since then, i've had the wheel bearings replaced twice, the rear door stopped latching and i had to drive it to the dealer with my son holding the door shut, my alternator had to be replaced and still the lights get dim when i turn on the heater, the plastic and rubber door molding started coming loose and falling off right after i bought the car, the brakes have never stopped squealing, and now my key is stuck in the ignition and it won't come out. every time i take my car to a dealer, they always say the same thing oh, that is common with the ford focus. after reading all of the consumer complaints, i guess you could say these problems are common with the ford focus. i've had nothing but problems with this car and expect to experience many more because so far the track record for the ford focus is extremely poor. after reading the numerous complaints, i hope ford is forced into recalling the ignition cynlinder or switch whichever is to blame for the key to becoming stuck in the ignition and the wheel not locking while the car is in park. ts

While driving on i275 nth i heard what sounded like the noise a flat tire would make.got off motorway to investigate, could find nothing wrong. got back on only to find the car starting to pull toward the passenger side. luckily i was near a rest area, pulled off. only to find smoke pouring from the rear wheel. it had siezed solid. it was taken to a dealer, who fixed the following, drum&bearing cup, spindle, retainer asy wheel, rotor brake sk, cap rear wheel and the abs sensor. refused to check other side as that had already(much early been fixed under a recall) while their they did find the cause for the fuel smell inside the vehicle, in circuit 15rl3(gn.rd) @ c-87 terminal was not seated in connector, fuel consumption has improved from 28mpg to 31mpg. local dealer and ford customer service both told me my concerns with the other rear wheel and the engine due to it's consumption of unburned fuel(not to mention mine)were area's they will not check, even if i feel they are potentially dangerous to myself and any passengers i may have.*ak

At 40,000 miles on my 2000 focus wagon, dealer tells me that the clunking noise i hear from front and rear will be fixed with a new front tie rod and rear shocks. visited dealer 3 times to fix a windshield washer leak into tailgate, filling light fixtures and seeping into rear of car. i have had my fan motor replaced and my rear door latches are not working correctly. all of many recalls have been addressed, we even received 4 new tires due to tread wearing. it took many trials to get a correct alignment. my stereo often will cut out for no reason. i am no longer under warranty and fear that this most recent suspension repair will be costly while i still make monthly payments on my vehicle. can you help? *jb

I have had nothing but problems with this vehicle just last month the cable and motor in the rear passenger side door window burned up and now will cost over $600. to fix i can not get the front rack & pinion fixed because it will cost $1800.00. the transmission is going out now it slips out of gear sometimes not at all. i just got the brakes repaired for the third time in may and they are again squeaking. i have all of my receipts for work done to this car. i am now having to put power steering fluid in once or twice a week. the automatic locks on the doors lock and unlock all the time, and the electric instruments turn off by themselves. (radio) the driving lights go out at times and will not come back on. please help me, i am a single mother and have complained to courtesy ford they want to charge me diagnostic $90.00 for each item i am complaining about and then the amount it will take to fix all of the things wrong. this vehicle i just recently found out has had six different owners before me and one was rental car company. i do not know who the rest of them were. courtesy ford had said there was only one owner. they will not listen to me and now the focus' have a front suspension recall that may have been the problem the whole time with the brakes and the tire replacements and the power steering problems.!!! please help me. dt

I purchsed this car new and have had nothing but problems. i kept telling the service people that the tires were wearing funny and they treated me like i was stupid. eventually, when the rack and pinion steering went out they realized that there was a problem. both headlights have had the rubber replaced. the wiper motor has been replaced. the car started hesitating and i found the pvc hose was melted and they couldnt seem to find a replacement part until i got really angry. the car kept hesitating and it got worse. i tried everything.. replaced the plugs, fuel filter. after the check engine light came on i took it to another dealer and he put it on the machine and 2 cylinders were stuck. after checking further, he discoverd the plug wires were melted! the transmission hesitates at times but the service people say they cant duplicate the problem, it must just be the way i drive. the ford focus is a lemon and ford needs to make it right with all the consumers. nlm

Tried to put key into the ignition, key wouldn't go it. had car towed to dealer and it took a week to get fixed. had to argue to get a loaner car in the meantime and no one at ford was helpful at all and insisted that this was not a big problem. shortly before this happened, the steering and rack and pinion had to be replaced because of a fluid leak. last week, when attempting to start the car (it had not been started all weekend), the engine wouldn't turn over and the dealer had to replace the fuel pump. today while driving to work, the steering wheel became very loose and pulled away from the steering column. took the car immediately to the dealer and they put it back on. have had nothing but problems with this car. lots of recall work and all these other issues too. car is at dealer for service on average every four months. this was my first new car, but now i will never buy another ford and am getting rid of this one asap. *ak

I have a 2000 ford focus zx3 that has been plagued with steering problems. on 4 separate occasions the steering wheel has locked up while i was in the process of making a left turn. only after bringing the car to a complete stop, was i able to turn the wheel. after having the car into the shop 3 times, the best the service technicians can tell me is that they are unable to find the problem since it is intermittent in nature. the last time was easily the most frustrating. while making a left turn, the steering wheel became immovable. unable to stop in time, i ran the right front tire of my vehicle into a curb. this is a repair bill that i had to pay because, according to the service technicians, the problem cannot be traced. while no injuries have resulted from this problem yet, it does have the possibility to become very dangerous and i feel others should be warned.*ak

On saturday, june 30, 2001, the steering wheel on my 2000 ford focus station wagon began to come loose. specifically, the steering wheel was unresponsive when turned slightly, and was only effective when turned sharply. then i noticed that the steering wheel was wobbling at the base -- i.e., the point where the steering column entered the dashboard. i drove to ted britt ford (where we bought the car) and left the car for servicing. on tuesday, july 3, 2001, the service technician at ted britt (jim kiefer of the brown team) called me to inform me that the steering column had been assembled improperly by the manufacturer. i understood him to explain that the bolts to the steering column had not been sufficiently tightened, and had simply come loose over time. he stated that he had never seen this same problem before. i note that the car has between 19,000 and 20,000 miles on it, and it took approximately one year since we bought the car for this problem to manifest itself. it seems likely that most people who bought 2000 ford focus station wagons have not yet put 19,000 + miles on them, so this problem (if general to all or many focuses) may still be latent in many cases. thank you for your attention to this incident.*ak
