Got my daughter her first used car from a dealer, which i should had gone with her to check it out first since an 18 year old would most likely not know anything much of a car besides driving it. you would think buying from a used dealer is safer than buying out in the street. so when we took it out of the lot noticed engine tremble and suspension noise, (too bad no lemon law on used dealer selling this type of cars). after diagnose the engine produced a catalytic convert malfunction code. also after inspection the focus needs all four suspension struts. a month later that other suspension noise resulting almost in a accident from a back wheel shaking which came from a back wheel bearing which hub nut was just about off, which would had caused the wheel to come off. i did a search and this are all common problems with the focus and i believe there was a recall for a back wheel issue. the bad news is that after a while of the recall being issued it is voided or only specific vin numbers are considered effected ????. the latest encounter is the steering column locking and the key not being able to unlock it. the worst part is that the ignition cylinder would have to be drilled out to be replaced (very interesting since is the first time i seen that). i'm noticing from my experience with ford vehicles that although in my opinion there engine and transmission are a bit better than most vehicle, is the little parts that one have issues with that ends up costing the most, just saying. so why is it that with many complaints and known issues from previews model years ford has not attempt to resolve the issues. i bet there would be many other people out there complaining if only they new they can complaint, the question is, is anyone going to do something about it!!! *tr

The vehicle went in for an inspection because there was a clunking noise from the passenger rear of the car. it turns out that the rear subframe and right rear sway bar has rusted completely off. the amount of rust by the technician has been found to be exorbitant in comparison to the amount of miles it was driven. the tech suggested that the car was submerged, but there was no record of it being so. i am the third owner of the car. i would like to file a complaint, for there seems to be a lot of this issue online, from ford focuses from 2000 to 2005. *tr

The accident occurred on a hill at 10:30 p.m. i suddenly lost all power and control of the car near the crest of this hill. the car drifted back almost in a straight line. the brakes and engine weren't working as the car picked up speed in reverse under its own power i.e., from the slope of the hill. it continued backward until coming to a sudden stop with severe impact. the car was stopped by a storm sewer culvert (ditch) to the side of the road. the left rear of the car and undercarriage were severely damaged i.e., catalytic converter, muffler, rear axle, etc. the car was in excellent condition, was well maintained and had recently been inspected. the car was deemed a complete loss by the insurance company. i can provide more detailed information including a police report if requested.

Tl-the contact owns a 2000 ford focus. both right and left front spring failed. the vehicle was having a routine maintenance in chaning the oil and they found the front spring broken. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who replaced the front left and right front spring at a cost of $322. the dealer informed her that the vehicle was not included in the recall. the manufacturer was contacted and informed her the warranty on the vehicle was 10 years or 150,000 miles and her vehicle had expired and was not included. the failure mileage was 112,964.........mw

Had to replace transmission, cost close to $2,800.00. after that was replaced i has a coil spring break over the tire which broke off into my tire and i went careening over a railroad track and i went into a ditch. ford motor company replaced that after much protesting on my behalf. i paid out of pocket to have it towed to a dealership. i was never reimbursed for that. the issue i have had since then is that the car stalls for no apparent reason. i have replaced an o2 censor and battery, but this problem persists. it does not matter what speed i am going. the car acts as if it isn't getting fuel to the motor. now, mechanics are saying i may need to replace the fuel pump which is expensive. i will finally be paying this car off next month. it feels like a disposable adventure. i read up on the recalls and feel this has to be a recall with the fuel system. i am afraid to go very far in this car because i don't know when or where it will stall. it has no real pattern . i tried going with a higher grade of fuel, used additives and it just keeps doing the same thing, please consider my complaint. *tr

Every time i would take my car to the dealer for repairs . they would tell me there were none. in june i took my focus to the dealer for a loud noise coming from the left rear wheel. they told me there were no ball bearings on the left side and the right side needed to be done also, they only had one in stock that day. *tr

No special events took place to cause damage. i am at 75k miles. both right wheel bearings have gone bad (both front and rear) and requires the entire hub to be replaced at $350 each. rear hub almost caused tire to fall off while driving, caused brake failure and abs failure. also required rear brakes and abs chip to be replaced. *tr

In april 2002 the local ford dealer performed the 2000 ford focus wheel bearing safety upgrade at 19,000 miles. in oct 2005 the right front wheel bearing was replaced at 59,000 miles and now we need to replace the right rear wheel bearing at 79,000. it appears that ford has not fixed the problem with their safety upgrade. *tr

On 10/23/07 i inserted key into ignition of my ford focus and immediatley the lights and gauges went haywire-vehicle failed to start. to make a long story short ,after unpluging the battery cables and going back to the stranded car the next evening, it started . 2 days later my wipers came on by themselves and would not stop until i turned the car off and restarted. on 10/31/07 while driving my daughter home, the vehicle began accelerating and deccelertaing uncontrollably. i pulled of the highway and when i opened the drivers door, the seatbelt light began blinking and making a loud ticking noise. this had happened the night prior, but i thought maybe the button was depressed. my dome lights make a screeching noise and blink on and off. this is a serious problem that needs to be looked into. whenever something like this happens i am driving home late at night and of course the dealer is not open to help me . my car is almost paid off and i will not invest more than what it is worth, which is only about $2,500.too bad i have paid about $18,000 for it. i would also like to know why i have not received recalls for the following problems: 1. 1st month after purchase, electrical system running airbags, mirrors, doors etc. failed. 2. 37,000 miles- transmission failed 3. 42,000 miles- power door locks failed and soon after passenger doors stuck in the lock position. 4. all window tracks have failed. 5. wheel bearings replaced. 6. trunk latch failed 7. ignition failed and was replaced and is going again. 8. brought in for 1 recall (fuel filter) and still didn't correct problem with vibration and lurching. this is a vehicle that exceeds highway saftey ratings? something will be done about this if i must hire an attorney- i am out a lot of money and no vehicle. *tr

A grinding noise was heard when brakes were applied. inspected brakes - found no problem. within a few days the grinding noise turned into a constant growling/ rumbling noise. re-inspected wheels/ brakes and found drivers side rear wheel to be loose / wobble (lug nuts were properly torqued). closer inspection revealed that the hub/ wheel bearing assembly had significant play. while the car was jacked up the drivers side rear wheel would go from easily spun to nearly locked up. the rear bearing retaining cap recall was performed on this car years ago - we are the original owner of this car.*jb

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 55 mph on dry asphalt, the engine stalled. the vehicle was able to be restarted after 15 minutes, and was taken to a service dealer who determined that the fuel pump had stopped functioning. the dealer replaced the pump on two separate occasions, however the problems persisted. the fron stabilizer bar and fuel filter were replaced. updated 11/16/06. *jb

Early on i had issues with stalling but just thought it to be weird for the car would turn back on..would power down while driving then i could start it over again. wasn't until recently it became an issue that worried me when i was on a trip and it did it 3 times in a row and it wouldn't start on the second time but then did on the third try. i had been pulling out into heavy traffic when car just died.. everything went dead. tonight my engine light came on and i started searching the net looking for reasons why when i came across the stalling issues with the ford focus 2000. i have also encountered multiple problems with the car over the years and until recently have stayed under 50,000 miles. i also had the locking of the ignition which was replaced by the dealing but last time i took the car in for the rear bearings they told me my car was not one of the 21 states it had issues with. i see they have now included that to go into all 50 states. at this point i am really scared to drive this car anymore and was just getting ready to do an out of state drive which i am putting on hold. i've had other issues that are nothing compared to the car stalling out in traffic.. it just stops.. steering freezes brakes lock.. its a mess and a danger to my child's life and mine. the latest problem of stalling plus the gas pressure seems to be an issue.. i press on the gas and it seems to sputter as if the car wasn't getting enough gas and almost dies.. i thought maybe my clutch was going out but that doesn't seem to be the case. it has not been a cause of an accident thank goodness but have come very close. this is a danger to other drivers and to myself. *jb

I purchased my 2000 ford focus se from merlin motors in saskatoon. production date - may 2/2000, stock no. pp24941, r.o. no. 155631. i believe this car was previously owned by someone in british columbia. here is a chronological breakdown of repairs. april 17/01 - took car in because driver mirror vibrated badly when driving - so badly that i could not look into it, it was shaking that much. also, the trunk would not open from the release inside the car. parts were ordered at this time. vehicle kilometers- 32854. june 19/01 - they checked for driver mirror vibrating when driving and replaced driver side exterior mirror. the also checked for trunk not opening from the release inside the car, they replaced the trunk stop and adjusted. vehicle kilometers- 35222 june 20/01 - they checked for power steering leak and replaced steering rack and set toe. vehicle kilometers- 37782?? (this is obviously an error - i know i did not drive 2, 560 km in one day!) i also did not complain about the power steering and don't recall why my car was in there at the time. sept 21/01 - they repaired rattle in right front going over bumps, tightened all assemble bolts in front end, removed right caliper and rotor, lubed all bushing, adjusted front splash shields, found tie rod bolt loose and tightened. they also fixed molding on window belt, which was loose and checked inside rear view mirror and found it flawed - part on order. vehicle kilometers- 43170. nov 3/01 - we were driving in saskatoon when engine started to boil. we knew this because of steam coming from the hood, all gauges in the car read normal! we took car to merlin - they could find nothing wrong with the car after their checks, and told us to bring it back if it happened again! work order for this date states: customer saw steam coming from under hood, antifreeze pooled on engine, gauge read normal, steam coming from overflow tank - fill with a/freeze, pressure test for leaks, no leaks found.

I have nothing but grief with my 2000 focus. 1) most recently i had was traveling at 50 km/h when my front right coil spring dropped out of the front end. i phoned ford repeatedly and even though i discovered a program covering my the coil springs on i was given the run around saying that i was outside the program recall date by a few months even though the car was made at the wayne assembly plant; where other program recalls were coming from. i ended up in a field when the coil spring broke, narrowing missing the car next to me. i was thankful that i had escaped with my life but not to be covered by ford was a slap to the face. i am very upset about the way they handled this situation and i am determined to let everyone know about this situation. my alignment is also out because of the accident but can't afford to fix it right now. 2) four times since i've owned the car, the car has stalled. twice rounding a corner going onto a highway and 2 twice on a straight away highway. it always happened when the gas gauge was below 1/8 of a tank and so i thought it was my fault because i was running out of gas. of course i blamed myself. but four times ? i began to become suspicious when the car began chugging uphill on a recent long distance trip. i barely made it to my destination. when i took into a ford dealership in sudbury ontario the serviceman told me that knows of the problem though most of them came in under warranty. of course the problem at first only presented itself when the tank was near empty and so i always or nearly always made sure to have at least half a tank full of gas when driving. today the problem is present regardless of how much gas is in the car. very convenient for ford seeing as though i am outside the 60,000 km warranty plan. again i do not feel comfortable driving on the highways anymore. i am hoping that ford will hear me out a pay for the repair.

Purchased ford focus se in may of 2002 with 13,260 miles. we did not buy the extended warranty because we could not afford. soon after bringing the car home, we noticed the tire was very wobbly, and the brakes were squeaking--took it to the ford dealer and they told us these cars are notorious for brake noise, as for the tire nothing is wrong-the service dept. test drove and didn't notice a thing. have taken it in several other times after that for wobbly tire-still same answer nothing is wrong. have taken the car in for several recalls. key was stuck in ignition and had to be towed to dealership-but the next time my teenaged daughter drove the car the steering wheel was stuck when she was turning at an intersection-had it towed again, there was a piece of material (from them fixing the ignition problem) that was stuck in the steering column. our latest episode with this car is our trip from wa-virginia. the car was fine on the way there, except for the wobble in the tire in which we had the tires rotated yet again. but on our way back we started experiencing sputtering and surging of the car, we would pull off the side of the road every 20 miles (thinking it was from the hot weather), we would get another 20 miles in and same thing until finally we drove through chicago, il and it was worse, so we pulled off the highway and on to an on ramp--walked across the highway to use a business's telephone to call for a tow truck. they found us a tow truck but unfortunately it wasn't a king cab, so our insurance co., called us a cab. the tow truck took us to the nearest ford dealer--the car however seemed to running fine, so we decided to drive some more. we got about 15 miles down the road and sputtering again, so we called for another tow--and in the meantime we called firestone, we drove it there, the serviceman drove the car and felt what it was doing and said he didn't need to hook it up to engine diagnostic that it was the transmission.
03/15/200362000
I now have a problem with the transmission. the mechanic thinks it is a filter or switch that keeps the oil level in the transmission when turning right. my car shuts off when i make right turns. i have spent way too much money and still owe on this car..frankly i would like to turn it in! has lot of repair needs too much money. i had all of the recall work done also
03/15/20030
I drive 25000 miles a year to and from work approximtly 115 miles a day and 70% of that is on open interstate hiway. stop and go is less than 20 miles a day. tires completely wore out at 41000 miles. tires started humming at 10 to 15000 miles. i constly complained about front end and tire noise. i put a set of goodyear aquatred tires on at 41476 miles. they also started humming, so the front end was lined up. this did not stop the tires from humming. now car has 80000 miles, tires are scarming go down the road fast or slow. frontend suspension has been making clanking or thud type noise. just recently turing left geting off interstate it felles like the right front is changing geomitry. car turns left vilently - must corect stering. this will happens without notice. this car is extmly dangeras. when driven on ice and snow, it will brake lose when going staright for no reason and start to spin out. brakes wore out at 45000 miles. $400 to fix front brakes only. i have never had to put brakes and tires on a car at less than 50000 miles. more like 65 to 75000 miles.

Car is only 2yrs,8mo. have currently expended over $4000.00 on repairs. problem with seals allowing fumes in car from other vehicles running beside mine. the noise and wind shear level is very unsatisfactory. squeal noise and thumping feeling from pressing on brake pedal. hesitation on accelerating into traffic flow. poor quality on parts and workmanship from manufacturer

Bad brakes, leaking transmission x 2 repairs, numerous electrical probs, one "accident", damage repaired at ford expense, bad tire, noise from front rt side, "surge" prob, car seemed to "stick" in a gear. i don't have my file with me but i know there is more.
12/15/20020
My complaint is all the problems we have had with the focus. we have had numerous recalls and work done from the drivers seat collapsing, wiring harness replaced, bearings in front, and rear, brake assembly, sway bar, and have had to replace 3 sets of tires, and line up 3 times because they will not make good and the car eats tires. now we have 52,000 miles on the car, and a pin has come loose and gone through the transmission, and case. altough the dealer has been very good, we bought a new car so we would not have this hassle, and that is all we have had.
03/15/200283000
Takes off real hard like it wants to die but won't, then stops. when car is ran for a while it starts doing. we are not the only focus with this problem. there are others along with their reverse going out or first gear. every one who takes it in doesn't get it fixed
12/15/200265000
The brake system is horrible. they make noises all the time. i have replaced the cylinders and the shoes and it still does not sound right. the suspension is bad and needs replacing, but i can not afford it. i am a teacher. cruise control has gone bad, because of a faulty wire.

Brakes replaced but continue to squeal front suspension collapsed causing crash.

I started to replace tires as early as 5,000 miles just about 7 times by now. replaced ignition 5/03 for $667.00 the key would go in and wouldn't turn. spring coil driver's side broke while in traffic replaced 4/03 for $158.50. now the transmission is completly gone the car would not back up. please help me, i just don't know what else to do. the customer service at paul clark is so poor that i would not go there anymore.

Vehicle has been in multiple dealerships, in tx and in ar and still nothing has been fixed. the suspension had been replaced due to bent struts faulty shocks. the brakes have been redone on 4 seperate occassions and still squeal and grind. the transmission lasted 6 months this time and is being replaced as i type. there is a wierd metal noise coming from the from right side on acceleration. all of the recalls have been completed. did have a burning smell which the dealership could not duplicate. excessive wind noise from the driver side window. which the dealership blames on aftermarket wiring. which would have nothing to do with the wind noise. the car now sways on the freeway as if the wind is pushing the car around when there is no wind. everyone that we speak to cannot help me. the people will pull the car up on oasis and that make comments like oh my god and i have never seen any focuses with this many problems i was a loyal ford person. i own numerous fords. including a 94 cobra, 97 expedition, 86 svo, 67 gt390, and numerous others and this is very discouraging. the fuel pump has been replaced and on a recent trip i had to do 3 tuneups on the car just to get where i was going. oil was leaking into the spark plug holes from somewhere. the car surges to no end. it is just unbelievable. the car has been to various dealerships and mechanic shops 20+ times and is still messed up. i am just glad i got the 100k mile warranty. i would like ford to buy me out of this piece. i cannot afford to trade it in. my girlfriend is a ft student. so we are surviving on my income alone. any help would be appreciated

Since this car was bought new off the showroom floor, we have had suspension problems. we have had the tires replaced 7 times now and will soon have to have them replaced again due to severe tire wear. alignment has been suspect at all tire changes and warranty has been voided on 3 sets of tires due to misalignment. alignment has been done several times by ford and by private shops. alignment was even set out of spec. by friendship ford (bristol tn) to correct the problem of severe tire wear. to my knowledge, if a vehicle has to be set out of spec. to correct a problem, there is something wrong with the car in the first place. we were told however, by rusty wallace ford (newport tn) that our driving habits were just too rough and they proceded to tell me how to drive. i do not race the car or drive like a maniac and shouldnt have to drive 25mph to avoid replacing tires every 20000 miles. i have since had to replace the left rear wheel bearing that locked up also ruining the spindle, and rear brake pads due to the brakes on the left rear wheel locking up. it seems sort of questionable to me that i have had so much trouble out of that one wheel, the same one that was recalled due to the slight problem of it coming off the car. my mother and i own an inventory service and drive the car as many as 3000 miles a month and sometimes more, so our warranty was used up quickly and all of our problems other than the tires have come after the warranty ended. i do not have a problem with spending money to repair our vehicle as i know nothing lasts forever, but some of these problems are glaring and ford seems to be looking over them. please investigate the problems with the brakes tires as i have found that i am but one of many with problems with this ford product. i have found a website that you may want to look into.....www.fordfocusbrakeproblems.com. please take a look and i believe you will agree this needs to be looked into. thanks.

The right front coil spring on my 2000 ford focus has broken. this failure is due to a defect in the manufacture of these springs! ford has admitted as much in their customer satisfaction program letter dated november 2004. this failure happened while my 18 year old daughter was driving the vehicle. fortunately it did not result in a crash, but after reading some of the summaries in the other 88 complaints i believe that only by shear luck and the grace of god there have been no fatalities. i do believe that there have been some crashes and injuries, ( see complaints on front suspension in your database. i.e. id no. 886337) as someone who works in the automotive industry i strive to maintain my vehicles to very high standards and this includes keeping them clean including the undercarriage. this is why if you were to inspect my vehicle you would not find any excessive corrosion anywhere on the car except the spring at the failure area. the failure occurred when my daughter was going over a speed bump. *tr

The front passenger side coil spring of my 2000 ford focus zts broke in half and punctured the tire. the car was then towed to a mechanic. i have fewer than 50k miles on the car. the only event that might have led up to the break was traveling at less than 10mph over a speed bump inside a parking garage. the spring, shock absorber, and tire must be replaced. and my mechanic expressed surprise that the tire did not explode. i contacted ford to determine whether there was a recall on this part since it was such an unusual occurrence. i was informed that some cars of the same make, model , and year were recalled because of corrosion on these springs. however, my vin number was not included in the recall. a quick search of website set up for ford focus owners by owners revealed several people with the same problem. *tr

2000 ford focus #1 car has been owned by me since 2001 (bought from a dealer with 13k miles on it), it gets used lightly and never goes on long trips. i use it just for local driving, to and from work. (about 5 miles a day, car has 80k miles on it) this car is a lemon! i have had some of the strangest problems and gone through more recalls then anyone should have to. #2 problems i'm having currently: suspension car's front passenger side spring has broken, makes very loud crunching noises when turning, needs repair. electrical car has smelled of burning rubber, and electrical system has started smoking on more then one occasion, have come very close to going up in flames. turning the car off then disconnecting the battery terminal cures the problem temporarily. was also told by local mechanic front axles are bad, and need to be replaced soon but do not know much more about it. problems i've had: fuel pump recall, door latch recall, and battery cable recall. have also had problems with the rear bearings of the car, paid out of pocket to fix those, because dealer told me there was no recall on them. after reading nhtsa campaign #01i017000 i have since learned otherwise. #3 all the problems i'm having with the car currently are not fixed. all the other ones were repaired by the dealer with the exception of the rear wheel bearings. the front spring is still available as is still on the car, and he electrical system is still intact. i will have to replace the spring soon but i'll hold on to it. the same goes for the front axle's. *tr

My car a 2000 ford focus had a front spring break in (2) places causing damage to the strut and the car was not safe to drive. i took it to a local goodyear store and had both springs and struts replaced along with a front end alignment. the cost was $800 for all. i have saved the springs to return for examination. both springs have a sleeve on them about (6)inches at the top and bottom. the area around the sleeve has collected dirt and caused corrosion (rust) to eat through the spring to the point it breaks. this could very well be a safety issue depending on how fast you were driving when it occurs. i was going 25 in a residential area when it broke. i would log to log this complaint as i am sure from looking at the defective parts that others will also be experiencing the same damage. i have owned the car for about 6 years. please let me know how i should proceed. i can provide pictures if desired. regards gary young

My car has a constant bad vibration that intensifies on right turns, going up grades, and over bumps. i have taken it to jim click ford in tucson, az for a total of three times. each time they come up with a different excuse and it never fixes the problem. i have been told at first it was, my tires, i replaced all four tires with top of the line michelins, then i was told that my fuel pump was going out and that is the cause of the vibration, now it is the coils. not one of these has fixed the problem, i am still waiting on the pump to get in stock at jim click, and they did replace the coils at a charge of $370.88. in addition to the vibration it sporadically tries to stall and hesitates when turning. i also have my taillights, and back up lights constantly burning out, i have replaced them 3 times and the last time i had jim click replace them. (the back up light, passenger side is out again) i was also told the first time i took in my car to jim click ford (before the fuel pump recall), i needed to replace a failing fuel pump and that would cost $680.00 to replace. (parts and labor) i could not afford it and took it out of their shop, i then brought it in after the recall and they told me that the fuel pump was not the problem that it was the coil and they could not replace the fuel pump since it was not failing. i then fought it out with them and they said they would replace the fuel pump when it came in stock late january 2004. they did replace the coils and the engine check light was on when i brought it in and that is how they determined that it was the coils. they fixed that problem and i got my car back and guess again the engine light came on the very next day and the vibrations are getting worse. i am starting to feel that this car is a lemon my car only has 64,000 miles and has so many recalls and service bulletins it is scary. *cb

Ford focus fuel pump fails to deliver fuel and car stalls. dangerous! i was only less than half of a tank of gas full and my car stalled out on the very busy davis blvd in nrh tx. it repeatedly died when trying to restart the car to get it to a service station. i filled the car up and the car worked fine. now we never let the car get below a haff a tank. please resolve this issue we could have been killed! this was the most recent time this has happened. this problem and similar hesitation upon acceleration in turns and going uphill have happened numberous times and have left me feeling like i was going to be stranded or worse- in a wreck. i have also had the common ignition cilinder lock problem, a broken door actuator, a broken lumbar support, drasticaly leaking a/c onto the floor, a very noisy front stut noise when going over speed bumps, front car creaking from right front fender noise at highway speeds, and poor service reps that insult person and destroy car (broke things on car that were not broken when brought in for service). all of these things need addressing, but most of all the fuel/hesitation/stalling problem before someone is killed!

Hi, i own a 2000 ford focus and it has been nothing but trouble. i purchased the car brand new in 2000 and have had it in the shop so many times. i have had my rear passenger side window mechanism replaced by ford, then personally replaced the driver front window mechanism and the driver back mechanism due to cable breaks. i have had it in with the radio 3 times and it still does not work correctly. i have had to have the brakes replaced, the ignition block replaced, the struts and shocks. the trunk release has never worked. now it keeps breaking down on me if i drive for more than 1 hour non stop. this weekend i went to san antonio from corpus, it died on the highway 3 times going to sa and coming home 4 times & how safe is that! ford said they cannot do anything for me unless it is messing up when i bring it in while it is acting up, however it always happens when i am away from town. they told me that if they hook it up to the machine it will not tell them anything. also, on several occasions my accelerator has stuck and i cannot brake, i have to put the car in neutral and press on the brake hard while the rpm's are still revving and pull the emergency brake, the first time this happened i was pulling into a parking spot and went over the yellow divider. is there anything i can do? *la

These are the probelems with my car. it is only 8 months old, yet this car has had repeated problems. the first major problem is with the brakes. they continually squeak and i was told by ford that it was due to a safety issue. the brakes and pads were replaced yet the problem has continued since. i have also made numerous complaints and had the breaks deglazed and serviced many times only to have the problems continue. the next problem is with the ventalation. the engine strongly smells of burning oil/fuel. this problem was checked and fixed three times, but this problem also continues. the smell is so strong inside the car that passengers now refuse to ride in the vehicle. the smell is also very strong from out side the car. the third problem with the vehicle is with the driver's side door. the lock and latch are very tight and are some times imbossible to turn or open without exessive force. the door hinges are also stiff. this is a lot of friction in the hinges making lots of noise and not allowing the door to move smothley. the last problem i am reporting is with the suspension. this problem has been fixed more than 5 times and it is still a very big problem. new parts have been put in and the squeaking and humming is still very loud. there are also loud clanking noises coming from the suspension.*ak

While driving my 2000 ford focus sedan upon exiting the parkway saturday evening march 18, 2006, i heard a loud thud from within the front end, like something had snapped. nothing looked to be wrong. a short time later, the vehicle started to emanate a loud high-pitched grinding noise and then a lot of smoke. what happened is the front right wheel suspension spring snapped off the strut and gorged a deep trough or groove in my tire. fortunately the tire was brand new. if this had happened while i was driving on the parkway a few minutes before, no doubt the tire would have blown and sent me careening out of control. my mechanic put the car up on a lift so i could take photographs. my mechanic is making the repairs today. he reports the strut spring broke in three separate places. the front tire is destroyed and rendered totally useless. the odometer reading is 66,662 miles. the defective parts will be retained and made available for physical inspection. i am sending my photos as an attachment with my e-mail message to the nhtsa at their following address: webmaster@nhtsa.dot.gov i have never experienced this type of mechanical failure in any other vehicle make or model and i have been driving continuously since 1965. you will observe that a number of identical mechanical failures involving the ford focus struts and springs are posted by others at the nhtsa web site. *jb the mechanic informed the consumer the front strut broke which caused the front coil spring to break into three pieces. updated 04/04/06. *jb updated 05/25/06*jb

We were driving our car (a 2000 ford focus) and had just pulled into our driveway, as we shut off the engine we heard a popping sound, but neither my wife nor i could decide if it was the car. about 30 minutes later my wife was going someplace with the car and when she had backed up we heard a scraping sound coming from the front end. upon investigation we found that the driver's side coil spring had broken and a sharp pointed end of what was left was poked out into the tire, the tire did not blow, but could have if we were traveling at any significant speed. the coil spring should have been restrained by a clamp and a cup shaped plate, but the plate was not cup shaped at all. this seems like a defect and an unsafe thing that could result in injury or death to the occupants of the car. ford has a known bad track record with springs, and there is a technical service bulletin that should be upgraded to a recall. further, other models of ford should be inspected to see if they also have this engineering design flaw with the spring base plate. *tr

Driving on rt 80 at 65 mph the passenger front coil spring failed causing the coil spring to rub on the tire and damage it. however, the bf goodrich sidewall was strong enough to allow the car to be driven slowly to a ford dealer about 1.5 miles away. both front coil springs were then replaced per the earlier nhtsa agreement with ford. the coil springs were left with dealer. as the coil failure could have caused a high speed blow out, in my opinion, ford should replace all 2000 to 2003 focus front coil spring in stead of free replacement when they fail per ford's 03m02 customer satisfaction program. *jb

The front left coil spring on my car snapped and lodged in the front left wheel, causing it to seize while driving at highway speeds. the car came to a rapid halt, and if i wasn't in the right lane when the incident occurred, an accident might have resulted. a few days before, i had heard a snapping sound from the left side of my car, but i noticed no immediate symptoms. ford has determined that the coil spring was improperly manufactured, but no recall was performed. ford's response (campaign 03m02, in response to investigation ea 02-023) was not adequate for the following reasons: 1. ford's response states that the spring failure will cause suspension noise, possibly accompanied by sagging of one side of the vehicle. clearly, the failure that i experienced was not considered when determining if the situation warranted a recall. 2. ford did not notify me that it knew that the front coil springs were defective. this left me without the information that i needed to recognize the failure and prevent further problems. 3. the spring was inspected by the dealer 7 months before the accident, but the corrosion was not spotted. this indicates that the dealers were not monitoring the spring, despite the fact that i live in a high-corrosion area. *jb

I was going about 15 mph when i hit a small pot hole in the road. soon after i began to hear a clicking noise when i would take turns. after bringing the car to a mechanic i was told that both front coil springs had shattered. after having these fixed as they were under extended warranty by the manufacturer i am told that coincidently i have new front suspension and abs issues which though most likely were caused by the coil string malfunction will not be covered as subsequent damage and i am on my own. had the damage to the coil spring not occurred there would have been no issues with the abs or front suspension. *jb

Left front suspension spring broke after riding over a manhole cover at low speed. the vehicle made a grinding noise and it was parked in the nearest parking garage. the damaged tired had to be removed and replaced with the spare to move the car back out of the parking garage to be towed. this tire was also damaged (however, the damage was less severe). the car was then towed to the nearest dealership. the coil spring cleaved under the rubber shielding and damaged the left front tire. if this had occurred at highway speeds, the tire would have punctured and caused significant damage and possibly injury/death. *nm

Always noted a rattling, which i was told was a strut noise, but nothing was wrong. two weeks ago the right side strut spring broke and nearly destroyed a tire. had to be towed, and then had spring replaced. 10 days later the left side spring broke as i entered driveway. many reliable sources have informed me that there was no way a 2000 vehicle with 67,000 miles should have these problems. the warranty expired. . bottom line was that ford used either inferior or defective springs on a important part of the car.*ak

 1) no known events lead up to the failure. we had no warning. we did nothing unusual. 2) we were driving and heard a loud noise. we hadn't run over anything and the car appeared fine. upon taking it to be looked at we found that we needed a new spring. we also found out that this is a very common problem in the 2000 focus and also that the ford taurus had the same problem. however the taurus was given a safety recall. i was informed by my mechanic that had the spring punctured my tires sidewall, i would have blown a tire and could have lost control of the vehicle, which, even at lower speeds is undesirable. 3) the mechanic put in a new spring, but thinks that the other spring may be more vulnerable now having beared the extra load. also, he says our struts may have been compromised as well... i don't have a lot of money so he replaced the spring on the front passenger side and that is all for now. *nm

Complaint received via e-mail.my car started making a terrible screeching noise. fortunately, i was within 1/4 mile from a mechanic, so i pulled in there. the mechanic, dan, told me the front springs had broken on the car, and he even showed me just how close one of the springs had gotten to puncturing a tire. had i driven to nappanee, i believe the spring would have punctured the tire. we both looked on the internet for recall information since broken springs seemed so odd. nothing was there, so i paid over $300.00 out of pocket for the repair. now, i see cars like mine are having problems with the springs, and that ford is covering these kind of repairs for ten years or 150,000 miles. i didn't know that when i paid for the repair. i want reimbursement, but more importantly, i would like to see ford motor company acknowledge this serious safety problem through a recall rather than a service bulletin. i called ford just today, and the service person said to take original repair bills to my dealer's service manager for review. the dealer is supposed to send them to ford where a reimbursement decision will be made. this concerns me. i don't understand why in the world this obvious safety matter has not been made a recalled item. i didn't know the springs were broken until the mechanic told me. springs, i do not believe, are something the common ordinary person checks during oil changes. i would like to see ford initiate an immediate recall for the springs since it's such an immediate safety concern. had i driven on those broken springs much longer and had i been going faster than town speeds, i probably would no t be here to write this letter today. my car has been great overall. yes, i've had a lot of recall work, but i still like the car and do not regret buying it. i might buy another focus. but still, i think ford is wrong for not doing a recall on the springs. *nm

Hello-i have contacted ford multiple times in the last six months due to issues with my barely out of warranty focus. one of them had a tracking id of kmm2116208c0km, case id of 716814. the other case id i have since lost but was under my name and this same vin #, 1fafp3434yw152955. the morning of monday, 6/30/03, with approximately 29,300 miles on the car, i went out the garage to back up. a horrible grinding noise was coming from the front of the car. the right front spring coil was sitting on top of my tire. this is of course related to a recent recall (the tenth one i've received). i'm outraged that ford isn't requiring focus owners to have their coils checked. there was no shift in suspension or noise with my vehicle. suddenly, it just became very, very undriveable. the day before this happened, i put on 200+ highway miles at 65mph. if this coil would have broken on the highway, it would have been an extremely dangerous situation! i have had my car in the shop 14 times for non routine maintenace since i have bought it, but this last incident was incredible scary. respectfully, michael hare. *ak

I drive a 2000 ford focus with 32,000 miles on it. i was driving on the highway (i-44) at 70 mph speed when the spring on the strut of the front passenger tire broke. the car swirled, started smoking, made screetching noise, and with lots of struggle and dangerous swirls i pulled up on the left side of the 3-lane interstate. it was impossible to remain in this narrow lane because the danger was too high, so a police officer escorted my car across three lanes to pull in into the right side of the highway. after my car was taken to a repair shop, i contacted ford motor company to report this incident. ford informed that my warranty was up a month before the incident and there was nothing they could do about it. they showed no concern regarding this dangerous incident happening on a 3 year old vehicle. besides the traumatic experience and the repairs, this can lead to more incidents of this kind, but ford customer service showed no interest in this case. unbelievable. lawsuit waiting to happen. i will never buy a ford product again. *nlm

2000 ford focus se 4-door sedan. front drivers-side coil spring failed. the coil-spring has a 3 inch piece of straight round tubing on the last ring of the coil spring. the shape of the coil causes the straight piece of plastic tubing not be tight to the shape of the coil. i assume water, road salt and other contaminants that would cause corrosion were able to get under the plastic tubing and corrode the coil spring to the point of its sudden collapse and failure. the break occurred directly in the middle of the sleeve of tubing. it broke after 3 years and 3 months with only 44000 miles on the car. a solid steel coil spring should not corrode and snap. *jb

Mine is a ford focus 2000 se. the rear wheel bearing on the left side has gone bad and needs to be replaced on my vehicle. it is causing a loud rumbling noise at speeds higher than 20 mile/hr and wobble at speeds higher than 50 mile/hr. apparently this is a common problem and can lead to the wheel coming off during motion. it seems like there was a service campaign by the ford company (nhtsa campaign id 01i017000) to address this issue. i also noted nhtsa action number pe 02016 for this same problem. i contacted the company to be told that my particular vehicle (according to the vin number) was not supposed to be having this problem and thus not part of any service campaign or recall. it is very unfortunate that the company does not take responsibility of a common safety problem with their vehicle, just because in their assessment it is not their fault. i was wondering if i can take advantage of the above mentioned service campaign or the nhsta action number. *jb

From what i can understand about recalls on ford focus models, there has been a recall on the issues of wheel bearings. the last time i visited a ford dealership for service this recall was not mentioned as needing to be done or as taken care of on the service ticket, so i assumed that the problem was taken care of. however, on a visit to my local mechanic, he told me that i would need new wheel bearings in the near future. so from this i can only assume that the problem was taken care of once and now has to be taken care of again. and this is on a vehicle with only 73,000 miles. the vehicle is 2000 focus zx3 5 speed. also the vehicle was bought used in dec. 2003 with 49,000 miles on the odom. thank you for your time. *ak

In 2000 i brought my ford focus 2000 in for a recall on the left rear wheel bearing. the dealer supposedly fixed the problem. in 2001, my right rear wheel almost completely separated from my vehicle, and the car fishtailed when driven. i brought the car into a ford dealer who diagnosed the problem as a bad bearing in the right rear wheel. they replaced the bearing, abs sensor, and spindle under warranty. on feb 3, 2005, my abs light came on, followed by loud metallic popping and grinding noises when braking or accelerating. the car did not seem safe to drive, so i immediately brought the car into the nearest ford dealer. the problem was again diagnosed as a faulty bearing in the left rear wheel, the very same that was replaced in 2000. this caused the abs sensor to go bad and notched large chunks of metal out of the spindle, and potentially could have caused failure of the breaks or complete separation of the wheel from the vehicle. the dealer claimed there was nothing wrong with the design or the bearings being put in, and it was just coincidence that i had to bring it in 3 times for problems with 3 identical bearings. they obviously have not solved the problem identified in the 2000 recall, but have gotten around it with 12 month warranty periods, forcing customers to replace the bearings spending over $650 a pop every year or so.*ak

I complained to the dealer about the brakes squeaking a week after i bought the car in oct. of 2000. it has been an ongoing problme . my car has been in the service center a number of times in the last year and a half since i bought the car. i also mentioned that there a roaring noise coming from somewhere. this problem was never addressed. the noise had recently gotten unbearbable. so i took the car to two independent car shops and they both agrred that bearings are gone and that this car should not be having this problem this soon. one of the car shops even contacted a ford dealer to find out how much time it will take according to their book to fix this problem and was informed that they did know because they have never replaced any bearings on these cars before. i am veyr disappointed that i have had to go to great lenghts to have this problem fixed and it still have not been resolved. *ak

Last month, i replaced the right rear wheel bearing on my ford focus when it failed. i have heard reports that other people have had the same problems, and i believe this problem is related to a flaw in design. more dangerous than that, though, is the problem i had with the fuel system. the car lost power on several occasions after right-hand turns or going uphill. it did not stall, simply sputtered and lost power for between 2-5 seconds. one of the most frightening incidents happened when my husband and i were merging onto the capital beltway on our way to visit friends, and the car lost power, nearly causing an accident. i took the car to the dealer and they were quite familiar with the problem, as ford has issued a service bulletin about it. the repairs cost over $425, and involved replacement of the fuel pump and complete flush of the fuel tank. i was told that ford claims the problem is created by contaminated gasoline, which means that at any time, this problem could resurface. i am frightened to drive the vehicle in traffic or on the highway, because my confidence in its safety has been shattered by this problem. i believe that ford is aware of this safety issue and should issue a recall on the faulty system.*ak

Rear wheel bearings failed at 55,000 miles. ford refused to make repair under recall .ford refused to sell me the improved or redesigned wheel bearing parts, but instead would only allow me to purchase another set of the same design bearings that already demonstrated that they are subject to early failure, as they had already demonstrated by failing at 55,000 miles. i am now driving a ford vehicle that has been proven to be subject to unexpected and premature wheel bearing failures because it encompasses an admitted flawed component, this exposes me and others drivers on the road to an unwarranted risk involving vehicular safety and potential personnel injury to myself and others that could include a catastrophic event. in the interest of personnel and public safety and to demonstrate adequate corporate responsibility, i feel it is fmcs responsibility to correct this situation as soon as possible. what i want:1) fmc should replace the flawed components (rear wheel bearing assemblies) with the new approved designed components at their cost, on a recall or other basis. 2) fmc should reimburse me for my costs to purchase and installation of the defectively designed rear wheel bearing assemblies presently on the car. 3) i strongly suggest that fmc should review and revise as necessary their internal procedures and policies to correct this type problem with other applicable focus owners.

Despite the replacement of the rear wheel bearing recalls, our left rear tires warped so badly due to the bearing defect that we were forced to replace them. the ford dealership refused to take responsibility for the damaged tires and firestone said it was the vehicle defect that caused the tire damage. we replaced both rear tires since the vehicle was impossible to drive without excessive vibration which made steering the vehicle extremely difficult. despite the new tires, there is still fear in driving the vehicle since we are not totally convinced that the bearing recall has solved the problem. we have returned the vehicle with new tires for several alignments and balancings and yet we still get strong vibration in the steering column. the whole situation is causing fear in driving the vehicle since our dealer tells us that the only recourse we have is to bring the vehicle in for constant alignments and balancing to avoid the vibration and excessive wear on the tires. this doesn't seem normal for similar front wheel drive vehicles such as the hondas and nissans.*ak

I have a 2000 focus. i experiance hesitation when the fuel tank is about 1/4th full, it died once while turning around an offramp cloverleaf. also when coming to stops it idles rough. when starting and waiting while in or out of gear, idling is rough. turning corners i occasionaly get creeks from the front and rear. sometimes i hear thumps from the rear when riding over bumps on occasion. i hear and feel a growl while the engine is running regardless of being in or out of gear or in or out of motion. it feels more prominent when the temp. is below 60 degrees. i can feel it vibrating in the steering wheel while turning and it seems to stop while turning left but continues when the steering reaches center. while going up or down inclines or small depressions in the road it becomes even more noticeable and you can feel it in the floor. the drivers side rear door lock sometimes clicks in and out of the lock postion erratically when the electronic door lock/unlock button is depressed. this handle is also extremely tough to open. sometimes power is lost to the radio, i remove the detachable aniti-theft piece and replace it, sometimes it works, sometimes i need to do it numerous times before the radio will turn back on. i had experianced warped rotors on the front when i first bought the vehicle numerous times, but i switched them with slotted rotors so i no longer have this problem. my rear brake drums are stock (but the pasds are not) and they squeal quite frequently, possibly due to excessive dust. i had noticed that sometimes the power window control would not work for windows other than the drivers. this has not happened in about a year or 2. i have just recently experienced water in the passenger well. last, occasionally the transmission will hesitate while driving. it almost feels like the transmission is shifting into neutral, but more like it was a human with a cluthc out a bit who cannot make up their mind about what gear to use.

My complaint deals with the 2000 ford focus . i purchased this vehicle in june of 2001 with 100 miles on the odometer. since then i have had to bring my car back for a few recals. one of the recals was the rear suspension where my car lost control and i veered off the road....luckily noone was hurt. the reason why i am writing this complaint is because i understand that there is a investigation on the focus for various problems. i wanted to add to the investigation by saying that i just spent 340 bucks on my ignition switch because it wouldn't turn which i understand is a common problem and i also had problems with my car stalling in the middle of the thruway. i almost crashed into an eighteen wheeler! i have had the fuel pump replaced and my car still idols very rough and occasionaly stalls out when i am stopped. ford should be embarrased by this and should take all focus's off the road! i read that there were hundreds of ford focus' with the exact same problem but no recal was issued

When consumer went to have her 30,000 maintenance service performed, she was informed that new tires were needed in order to correct the wobbling nosie that was felt and heard in the rear wheel, consumer believes that new tires are possibly needed due to a previous recall on the rear axle, secondly when consumer brought the vehicle in for tire rotation she could never get documentation stating that the work was performed, consumer now has doubts that the tire rotation was ever done.*jb

This car in snowy/icy conditions becomes in some cases nearly uncontrolable. it constantly sways from side to side and the back end tries to come around. i love this car on the dry but in the slick conditions is becomes the worst car i've ever owned. there must be something fundamentally wrong with it. it has been this way since new. i've had everything checked on it, installed new tires etc. and nothing seems to help. this is suppose to be a low cost car for the 1st time car byer but i'd not recommend it to anyone much less an enexperenced driver. i will not let my 16 year old drive it if the conditions are even a little slick. it can be a terrifying car to drive. *ak

Vehicle experienced a rattling noise in the rear suspension, consumer stated this could be attributed to a new wheel bearing that was added for recall, also during one recall repair, the dealer damaged the passenger side seat belt, it was returned in an un-retractable position. *slc

Noises coming from rear suspension ( drivers side). initially noise appeared during right turns at low corner speeds. now the noise is apparent over dips and uneven surfaces. accompanied by these noises are movement in the rear suspension. the suspension feels as though it is out of alignment. ride and handling have changed due to noise. car rides lopsided at times and runs wide in corners at higher speeds. there is increased body motion in rear at speeds above 65. the initial estimate of problem, by dealership service dept., concluded that the rear spring was out of alignment. however, the repair did not resolve the suspension problem. i believe the problem could be the axle. *ak

SUSPENSION - REAR - AXLE - NON-POWERED AXLE ASSEMBLY

Supplemental information reference nhtsa odi # 10134021 the aforementioned odi # is the third in a line of situations where, in my opinion, metal fatigue has caused a defect. excessive regrind material is being utilized in the manufacture of parts, leading to premature wear/failure aka planned obsolessence. the rh axle support bearings would possibly have never failed had good workmanship practices and standards been in place and utilized. being a proud ford owner only since 1969 i have never experienced such a rapid / rampid parts failure rate. as a show of good faith, i expect nothing less than ford motor company to absorb any and all cost of replacing the rear axle in my 2000 ford focus. your attention to this matter is greatly appreciated. respectfully, paul a. stadden

At 40,000 miles on my 2000 focus wagon, dealer tells me that the clunking noise i hear from front and rear will be fixed with a new front tie rod and rear shocks. visited dealer 3 times to fix a windshield washer leak into tailgate, filling light fixtures and seeping into rear of car. i have had my fan motor replaced and my rear door latches are not working correctly. all of many recalls have been addressed, we even received 4 new tires due to tread wearing. it took many trials to get a correct alignment. my stereo often will cut out for no reason. i am no longer under warranty and fear that this most recent suspension repair will be costly while i still make monthly payments on my vehicle. can you help? *jb
