Defect SummaryVehicle description: passenger vehicles equipped with speed control. the speed control cable end fitting can allow water to enter the speed control servo assembly. if this occurs, corrosion in the servo assembly could develop and cause intermittent speed control operation or prevent the throttle from returning to idle.
Consequence SummaryA throttle that does not return to idle could result in unexpected acceleration, increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the speed control cable (with a new cable that incorporates a glass-filled end cap) and inspect the assembly for internal corrosion. servos with evidence of corrosion will also be replaced. owners are advised not to use the speed control until the vehicles are repaired.

Clogging of the fuel delivery module (fdm) filters in the subject vehicles can lead to stalling and other related symptoms.these symptoms become increasingly obvious to the driver as the clogging gradually increases over extended periods of driving.stalling in these vehicles is most likely to occur when accelerating through a right hand turn such as merging into freeway traffic when the fuel level in the fuel tank is less than 1/4 full.more than 90% of the stalling complaints pertain to the original design fdm installed in my 2000 and 2001 (partial year) focus vehicles. ford has decided to conduct a campaign (03v-482) to address stallingin these vehicles.the smaller number and rate of complaints associated with the interim and current fdm designs indicate improvement but also reflect a shorter time in service for these designs. accordingly, odi will monitor the stalling performance of my 2001 - 2002 focus vehicles equipped with interim and current design fdms.

Possible throttle linkage sticking. i have owned a 2000 model year ford focus, for approximately 3 yrs. in the past 6 months i have had at least 3 occurrences where the vehicle's acceleration remains after releasing the accelerator completely, i have recurred to place the vehicle in neutral and pump the pedal, this has solved it so far, but i will have the vehicle inspected soon. *tr

I have a 2000 ford focus that the cruise control cable started sticking wide open. after inspection i found the cable had wires in the cable housing broke and was causing the throttle to stick open. the cruise control would open the throttle while accelerating and would not release. i now have the cable disconnected from the cruise control ford wants over $100 to fix the problem. it is a fault to the cable and should be recalled. why want they issue a recall on this car. i could of been killed from the sticking throttle cable. *tr

On 10/23/07 i inserted key into ignition of my ford focus and immediatley the lights and gauges went haywire-vehicle failed to start. to make a long story short ,after unpluging the battery cables and going back to the stranded car the next evening, it started . 2 days later my wipers came on by themselves and would not stop until i turned the car off and restarted. on 10/31/07 while driving my daughter home, the vehicle began accelerating and deccelertaing uncontrollably. i pulled of the highway and when i opened the drivers door, the seatbelt light began blinking and making a loud ticking noise. this had happened the night prior, but i thought maybe the button was depressed. my dome lights make a screeching noise and blink on and off. this is a serious problem that needs to be looked into. whenever something like this happens i am driving home late at night and of course the dealer is not open to help me . my car is almost paid off and i will not invest more than what it is worth, which is only about $2,500.too bad i have paid about $18,000 for it. i would also like to know why i have not received recalls for the following problems: 1. 1st month after purchase, electrical system running airbags, mirrors, doors etc. failed. 2. 37,000 miles- transmission failed 3. 42,000 miles- power door locks failed and soon after passenger doors stuck in the lock position. 4. all window tracks have failed. 5. wheel bearings replaced. 6. trunk latch failed 7. ignition failed and was replaced and is going again. 8. brought in for 1 recall (fuel filter) and still didn't correct problem with vibration and lurching. this is a vehicle that exceeds highway saftey ratings? something will be done about this if i must hire an attorney- i am out a lot of money and no vehicle. *tr

Early on i had issues with stalling but just thought it to be weird for the car would turn back on..would power down while driving then i could start it over again. wasn't until recently it became an issue that worried me when i was on a trip and it did it 3 times in a row and it wouldn't start on the second time but then did on the third try. i had been pulling out into heavy traffic when car just died.. everything went dead. tonight my engine light came on and i started searching the net looking for reasons why when i came across the stalling issues with the ford focus 2000. i have also encountered multiple problems with the car over the years and until recently have stayed under 50,000 miles. i also had the locking of the ignition which was replaced by the dealing but last time i took the car in for the rear bearings they told me my car was not one of the 21 states it had issues with. i see they have now included that to go into all 50 states. at this point i am really scared to drive this car anymore and was just getting ready to do an out of state drive which i am putting on hold. i've had other issues that are nothing compared to the car stalling out in traffic.. it just stops.. steering freezes brakes lock.. its a mess and a danger to my child's life and mine. the latest problem of stalling plus the gas pressure seems to be an issue.. i press on the gas and it seems to sputter as if the car wasn't getting enough gas and almost dies.. i thought maybe my clutch was going out but that doesn't seem to be the case. it has not been a cause of an accident thank goodness but have come very close. this is a danger to other drivers and to myself. *jb

My husband was driving our 2000 ford focus zts and the clutch pedal fell completely off. after doing research i see that there was a limited time recall for this item, however we are 2nd owners of this vehicle i am assuming the original owners did not have this fixed. however, we purchased the vehicle from a ford dealership in 2001 before the recall expired and they also did not have the faulty clutch replaced. called ford today and they offered no assistance. fortunately my husband was not injured and no one else was injured either. however, this could have led to a very serious accident. we are now having to pay to have the pedal assembly replaced as well as the clutch master cylinder. total $650.00. *jb

My idle speed control valve i was told was not working properly and the rpm's would shoot up whenever i would have the car in neutral. however this posed as a high danger risk because it would jerk forward because of the car idling and such a high point. this almost caused me several accidents and is seeming to be hurting the engine. however the danger of keeping my car like this is why i am writing. i think this posed as a driving risk b/c of how unsafe it made the car after this started to act up. *jb

Purchased 2000 ford focus, vin 3fafp3132yr227563 from croft ford on dec. 19, 2001; mileage was 12,163 (car was still under warranty); have been unable to walk since march of 2002 (mileage on car is now just over 13,000; last 200 plus miles has been put on by ford dealerships attempting to fix car). have had this car in to several ford dealerships; none of which can solve problem of engine surges; dash lights sweeping; transmission bolting; etc., etc., etc. this car is not safe to drive; i have notified ford motor company; the dealerships, etc., and feel that it should be covered under manufacturer warranty .. instead latest was that ford dealership wanted $500 to replace alternator and could not guaranty that would fix problem; i already paid $105; plus $110 and the same problems are happening. the car has been at the ford dealership in woodbridge, va, for over 2 weeks, which leaves my family without a car to transport me. this is not right. i told todd croft of croft ford that i needed a good, dependable, safe car because this would be the last car i ever purchased. he knew that i did not drive much at all and i feel that he sold the car (with an existing problem) to me thinking that i would never know. my daughter was the one who realized this car had a serious defect and took it to croft ford to be fixed several months ago; to date, it still is not fixed; is a danger to drive, not only to the person/occupants of the car, but to any vehicles near when the power surges occur and the transmission bolts. *jb

Leaking water into passenger foot-compartment. isolated problem to plastic cover that sits beneath windshield, and is mostly accessible with hood open. the problem is that the plastic comes away from windshield due to some buckling in the plastic. fixed problem by applying pressure to plastic to bend it back to shape so it snagged-up closer to windshield. not seen problem since. mastic to adhere plastic to windshield might be an option to other people. the fuel gauge sometimes refuses to work. found this to be case when key is put into ignition and key-turned to start engine was done too quickly. if entering key into ignition and then turning key each click, giving each click a half-second, then gauge appears to be more reliable. when engine goes into slow-idling state, engine idles very erratically and is not smooth. sounds like only some of cylinders are firing. this has only started to occur today and since reading comments on this website, i'm concerned. have tried adding fuel-injector-cleaner to fuel tank, awaiting results of that. the trunk would not close. the problem here was fixed by removing the locking assembly from the trunk-lid and simply dowsing the mechanisms with wd40 and then bending some spring-loaded components.. there are 2 moving components in the lock. first is shape of a loop that you can easily move with finger/screwdriver. this component locks onto stub that you can see when opening trunk. the other component is hidden within casing and moves in front of other component to hold it in a locked position. problem was with this component. problem was component had somehow gotten bent and not free to leave casing and block other component. bending this to a position freeing it of casing fixed problem. engine lacked power when under load when accelerating, vehicle would shudder and decelerate instead of accelerate. problem resolved when ford dealer replaced spark-plugs plus leads and a full engine tune-up. $230 plus but fixed problem. *la

For the past two weeks my 2002 ford focus se has been running rough when rpm exceed 3500. yesterday this problem became worse while i was travaling on i-94 east bound. while trying to accelerate to maintain the speed of the freeway the car begain to stall out. it stayed running but i could no longer press the gas pedal without the motor wanting to stall. finally after a the car slowed down to 40mph i was able to make my way to the shoulder. i was in the middle lane where posted speed is 70mph. car where franticlly trying to avoid hitting me while i limped my way over to the side of the road. after letting the car sit for 15 minutes i tried restarting and it appeared to be running better. i got off at the next exit and it started doing the same thing. however this time it would not even ideal and completely stalled while i was traveling at a speed of 40mph. i have been told by others who own this same vehicle that they too are having simular problems. i also read that you may have other complaints on this matter. thank you for your help in keeping us safe and holding the manufactor to the standards they should be at. i'm a employee of ford motor company and have always defended there position, but as a consumer this problem is very serious and need your attention.*ak

6/3/02 : my ford focus was accelerating on an entrance ramp to interstate 70 in abilene, kansas, and upon reaching about 40 mph it suddenly stalled. fortunately, there was plenty of shoulder to pull off onto. after about 20 minutes, the car was able to continue on to manhattan, kansas, without further problem. later that evening when attempting to move the focus from my driveway into my garage, it started up ok, but then stalled after about 5 seconds. it stalled about 5 seconds after each time it started. i made an appointment with the dealer, dick edwards ford, in manhattan, kansas, for 6/5/02. i did not drive the vehicle on 6/4/02. on 6/5/02, i started the vehicle and began driving to the dealer to have the problem checked/fixed. about 2 miles from my house, the focus suddenly stalled again. i had the car towed the remaining 3 miles to the dealer. 6/6/02 : the focus is currently sitting in the service bay at dick edwards ford in manhattan, kansas. tomorrow (6/7/02) the fuel pump and fuel filter are supposed to be replaced at the cost of $500.00 (estimate). tonight (6/6/02) i saw a report on the cbs evening news about ford focuses being investigated for stalling problems. perhaps it is mere coincidence, perhaps not. the report alleged that the problem might be a result of debris accumulating in the fuel tank. also noteworthy is the fact that my focus had its 100,000 mile maintenance performed on 4/19/02, including a new fuel filter and tune-up. i would also like to say that dick edwards ford has done all the maintenance on this vehicle at 5000 mile intervals. i am filing this report because i happened to see the evening news tonight. how many people did not see the report and have had, or are experiencing the same problem as i am now? thank you very much. i look forward to hearing from you.*ak

The throttle cable runs over the distributor wire's and the throttle cable is worn through the rubber down to expose the throttle cable wires as well as one of the distributor wires. ford sent a recall for 2.0l engines with a 5-speed manual transaxles, ford program # 00b59 after that repair my cruise control no longer worked because as soon as the key was put in the ignition and turned forward with or without turning over the engine the brake lights come on and remain on at all times and at all speeds until you turn the ignition completely off. a third problem also deals with a recall fmvvss 201. the new a-pillar trim panels they replaced in my car do not fit. ford modified the pillars to make them fit in place. you can see the metal from the outside of the car from the insideof the car. ford had to cut part of the pillars to make them fit and they constantly do not stay in place over the passenger side door. the new a-pillars do not fit properly and ford modified the recall parts to fit them into place. they even cracked my windshield on the passenger side trying to fit them into place.*ak

Repeated attempts in dealing with ford service, customer service and management (regional and central offices) have failed to correct these problems. discrepancy in documentation by thomason damerow ford service department in what i was told was done to the car versus what was documented. i was told verbally that certain corrections were made to the car but these were not documented. for example, i was told by chad the evening service manager that there was something wrong with the crank shaft dampener yet this was not documented when i picked up the car and informed dealer i would pursue lemon law. dealer had car for 30 days in april and i was told parts were on back order. regional manager was to have called me back but did not. service manager contacted on 08/22/2000 and 08/23/2000 regarding repeated problems but he only seemed to be concerned with documentating our telephone conversation. service manager stated he did not know the status on the back ordered parts but that he would call me back but he has not. i informed him that car continues to stall while driving. dealer provided with new phone and address although they were to have contacted me a few months ago before i moved yet failed to do so since april 30,2000. car has since stalled, i am very afraid to drive the car on the highway as the car will not even reach acceptable and a safe speed to merge with highway traffic. i will not use the cruise control as it seems to accelerate on its own even after the cruise control is not in use and it is turned off. there are numerous other problems with this car but the one i am most concerned about is the safety of this vehicle.....stallling, engine shut down while driving on highway, inadequate speeds to merge with traffic, inadequate speeds on slight incline, unable to use car to travel up the mountains which are plentiful in the area where i live. please investigate this problem to protect the public's safety , both the ford drivers and others on the road

We drove off the lot without having the pdi performed on the car, whcich resulted in low fluids in the vechicle, especially the transmission fluid. the low fluid caused the transmission to slip, and revved the engine, which made the car ride and drive real hard. the 1st day we had problems with the battery, which was already dead in the car. and now we received on dec 12,1999 a letter stating that the car was recalled because it had problems with fluids leaking into the cruise control panel, and to contact the dealer as soon as possible. so we contacted the dealer and let them know of the recall, and ask when it was possible to bring the car in. we spoke with the service manager who stated to us that the parts were orderd for georgia locations, but none of the parts ever had reach their location.. now that leaves us a problem as of today dec 18,1999, with constantly calling to find out when the part would be available and not only that the car needs to be seen also for the blown lighter fuse,as well as the ignition signal failure needs to be serviced also. we need immediate attention to this matter because the holidays are coming and we cannot use our car the way it suppose to be used, if we are trying to drive it out of town, please help us in this tough situation, because no one else is trying to understand that when a car is purchased brand new, it should not have these many problems with it in this short period of ownerhip, thank you.

Hi, i own a 2000 ford focus and it has been nothing but trouble. i purchased the car brand new in 2000 and have had it in the shop so many times. i have had my rear passenger side window mechanism replaced by ford, then personally replaced the driver front window mechanism and the driver back mechanism due to cable breaks. i have had it in with the radio 3 times and it still does not work correctly. i have had to have the brakes replaced, the ignition block replaced, the struts and shocks. the trunk release has never worked. now it keeps breaking down on me if i drive for more than 1 hour non stop. this weekend i went to san antonio from corpus, it died on the highway 3 times going to sa and coming home 4 times & how safe is that! ford said they cannot do anything for me unless it is messing up when i bring it in while it is acting up, however it always happens when i am away from town. they told me that if they hook it up to the machine it will not tell them anything. also, on several occasions my accelerator has stuck and i cannot brake, i have to put the car in neutral and press on the brake hard while the rpm's are still revving and pull the emergency brake, the first time this happened i was pulling into a parking spot and went over the yellow divider. is there anything i can do? *la

2000 ford focus lx 4-door sedan - numerous complaints: 1) currently have 75,200 miles on car and have gone through 5 (yes five!) complete sets of tires.2) engine stalls at any speed with no warning lights or indications, car bucks and gas pedal can be depressed to floorboard and car will not move - barely avoided three accidents (two of which would have involved my two small children) 3) all four doors will stick - really need to pull to open - and once open, they will not close again (you need to try to close the doors repeatedly before they finally latch). they also popped opened while driving. afraid one day one of my children or a passenger or myself may be injured. they are manual door locks and latches. 4) same with trunk - often needs repeated tries to close and latch 5) leak in front passenger footwell - when it rains, or when going through carwash 6) front brakes have been replaced twice at my cost - horrendous, irritating, embarassing squealing is incessant - brake dust accumulates every day! in some instances, brakes need to be applied very firmly to stop vehicle (again, i do not feel safe with my children in car). 7) extremely foul smell when air conditioning use is attempted. 8) stereo was replaced - original factory installed would not work after 2 months of ownership. 9) paint is flaking off of skirts - i was informed by ford that this is sandblasting and that i must drive on dirt roads all of the time - i live on an asphalt street, drive on asphalt roads and asphalt highways - not dirt! 10) fuel pump was replaced once already - was told i must be buying dirty gas - if it is dirty gas, is that my fault? i don't exactly run the gas stations, and i don't buy fro one specific station - i fuel up when i'm low, wherever it is convenient. 11) i have had three alignments to try to stop the horrible shaking of the car - the steering wheel vibrates so badly that my arms are sore by the time i get to my destination. *ak

Fuel pump problems: when making right hand turns, or driving around extended right hand curves (like freeway on- and off-ramps [aka cloverleafs]), the car nearly stalls when attempting to accelerate after the turn. when consumer steps on the gas pedal, the engine seems to stop running. when consumer lets off the pedal, the engine runs again and once the car has rolled in a straight line for a short distance, (50-100 ft.), consumer is able to accelerate. this problem begins to show up when the fuel gauge indicates the fuel tank is less than full. at that point, the stalling problem only occurs after making a hard turn. the stalling problem is easier to replicate as the amount of fuel indicated by the fuel gauge drops below 3/8 of a tank. this problem has not occurred when making any left hand turns. rear electrical problems up until about 38,000 miles, these problems were intermittent, and werenot evident most of the time. consumer had the vehicle checked at a dealer and they were not able to locate (or even reproduce) the problem. recently, the problems began to reoccur more frequently, until now, they are present virtually all the time. the problems occur together. if one part of the system is functioning properly, the other parts are functioning as well. the problems are, the right turn signals flash quickly. the right turn signals flash quickly when the brakes are applied. if the turn signal is on without the brakes (as in approaching a turn or signaling a lane change), the turn signal flashes normally. the left turn signal is never affected. the rear window defroster does not work. the light on the switch illuminates when pressed on but the window does not clear so there seems to be no power going to the wires of the defroster. taillights and back-up lights illuminate. when the switch of the rear window defroster is on (and the defroster is not working) the taillights and back-up lights illuminate.*jb

After purchasing my car in jan of 2000. i had to take it into the shop 3 days after for a linkage problem. i was driving in reverse and reversing in drive. i have taken the car in quite a few times since then for a loud noise coming from under the hood, for it not accelerating when entering the freeway, and for it accelerating for no reason at all. each time i took it in they said that was normal. which i know it was not because i have been in other 2000 ford focus' and they are any where as loud as mine is and they do not take off like mine does, and the pick up speed is wonderful. i am aware that there are other vehicles manufactured near that date that are or were on recall. i would appreciate it if you could look into this, so i can get it fixed before any one is seriously injured. *jb

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL - CRUISE CONTROL
11/27/2005680001
I was driving on a highway and turned on cruise control going up a hill. when the car cleared the hill, it continued to accelerate past the set point (probably 65 mph). at 70-75 mph i became alarmed and hit the off button to disengage cruise control, but the car continued to accelerate. i then hit the brakes lightly, thinking this would disengage cruise, but it did not and the car continued to accelerate to about 80 - 85 mph, at which point i turned off the engine and coasted to a stop on the shoulder. i then re-started the car 2-3 times, and each time, the engine immediately went to very high rpm, so i shut it down quickly. i had the car towed to a dealership where i live, and the next day the service manager had the same experience: car revved very high and he shut it down quickly. the second time he tried it, the battery was dead. when i spoke to the service manager this morning, he told me that the cruise control actuator had become turned around and that this had kinked the cruise control cable, preventing it from returning throttle control to the gas pedal. there have been two recalls on 2000 ford focus vehicles related to the cruise control system (nhtsa campaign id numbers 99v346000 and 00v302000), but apparently neither applies to my particular vin, which is 1fahp36p1yw193651. this obviously could have turned out very differently had i been driving in heavy traffic or had i not thought to simply shut the engine off, and i view it as a very significant safety hazard for this vehicle. i hope that you will initiate an investigation, as this failure could easily have fatal consequences. *jb

After about 10 days of buying my 2000 ford focus the problem. started and one year later the problems are still coming like clock work. first my breaks were squealing i called the dealer, he said not to worry about it until i had time to come in. 1 to 2 months later, after several calls asking if it was still okay to drive, i took my car in and the routers and breaks were bad, they sd i should have brought my car in sooner. well per there request i took my time. i had to pay the get this taken care of. it didn't stop there, my tires kept getting flats so i has to once again replace at my own expenses. now the real problems start, my cruise control was just out of control, my car would accelerate every time i would put in on cruise. the windshield wipers would not work and my radio kept turning off by itself. i had once again at my own expenses replace my windshield wipers calling the maintenance. dept. at meridian ford. they fixed the problem. with the cruise control and it was working fine for about 2 months it is now happening again! now i have problems with the key getting stuck and will not turn, the trunk will not shut, and my car will shut off when the car is in idle. it turns off if in park or drive after about one min. idle. this is very frustrating. and has caused so many financial and stress problems. i don't feel safe in this car and i feel cheated! i was sold a lemon! a list of what was wrong with my new car..bad breaks, bad routers, bad windshield wipers, bad cruise control, bad trunk, bad tires, the key gets stuck and will not turn, and now it turns off while in idle. all these things are still wrong with it and its costing me money, stress, time and it is costing me to be late on my car payments and other bills because i have to pay for all this crap to be fixed! why is this happening! do i need to get a lawyer or do you need to replace or fix my car at your expensive. i have lost so much and feel helpless. i hope this does not fall on deaf ears. *nlm

Please check under the hood at the accelerator cable and the way it fastens to the carburator. while reoving your foot off pedal too fast, it will cause accelerator cable to come off, accelerating your car at high speed and making it impossible for you to stop. this happened to us yesterday and many people could have been killed. after inspecting the part myself, i was shocked to see that (a) it was plastic and (b) there is nothing holding that cable doen other than a c-hook. this is very dangerous!!!!!!!!! please have this part inspected immediately, have it recalled and get this car safe. i will no longer put me or my family in that car until the accelerator cable death trap is fixed. thank you for your time and help! *ak
