I've had numerous problems with my ford focus and despite regular maintenance i've been stranded on the side of a highway countless times.thus far i've replaced the engine twice. twice i've had to replace the alternator. my throttle does not return to idle and has unexpected moments of acceleration and i've had to replace the engine throttle sensor. both of my front coil springs have broken and were very close to puncturing my tires. after taking my vehicle to numerous mechanics none of them have been able to diagnose why my car shakes so badly. i have very poor visibility at night with the exterior lighting which is significantly less compared to other vehicles. my fan has had to be replaced since it was malfunctioning and my car was having problems overheating as well. during the course of all of these car malfunctions, i've been in dangerous situations on the side of the highway and in risky neighborhoods at night. this car has proven to be very unreliable and unsafe.

I have a 2001 ford focus, originally there has only been one owner to this vehicle. very recently, i experienced a very loud noise in my left rear tire which as days past, i was unable to drive the car. my tire had begun to wobble to the point i thought that it may come off my car. this was caused by defective wheel bearings in the tire. *tr

My daughter slammed on the brakes at 40mph and the vehicle steering wheel jerked to the right and she felt a drop in the left front side of the car, the car started sliding and hit a curb. when the car came to a stop the front left wheel was broke off. a tow truck took it to the ford dealership. they said it needed a control arm; hub assembly; tie rod end; tire & wheel; axle; brake line; brake pads & rotor; trans pan and inner tie rod. they concluded it was in an accident and it was her fault and the cost would be $2,387.77 just for the mechanical only. she purchased the car september of 2002, putting over $8,000.00 down on the day of purchase with a remaining balance of $6,000.00. at the time of the accident she had no insurance. i beleive there was a problem with car to cause it to go out of control, and feel ford needs to address it.

The car starting having problems at 7000 miles. front end jumping. i had a tire go bad and replaced it. had the tire rotated and the front end lined up. then, the noise and the car still did not feel right. i took it back to ford and the rim is bent. replaced that. so far i am out 250.00 for the tire and 298.00 for the rim/. the problem continued, but by 15000 miles the car was jumping, front end problems. had the tires rotated and the car lined up again. i have the problems still. ( i was told(way i drive, curves, the way i take the corners, ) well, # one i am 43 yrs old and this is not my first car. i have had mustangs before and never rotated the tires or changed my driving habits. ( what ever). at 15000 the brakes started to squeak all the time (wet, cold, moisture, dry). per the manual this will happened. i was told that it is common with focus. i had a escort for over 4 yrs and they never did what this car has. with the front and back the recall 02s42/01b85 was done finally in march. this recall stated pinch bolt that retains the steering knuckle to the lower ball joint on your vehicle may not have the proper torque. ****** ( this condition exists, your vehicle may experience vibration or noise... this could eventually lead to ball joint separation with a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash,) this is what i was told ford dealership was wrong with the car since august. i feel that the recall came to late and now my tires are destroyed. one tire is worst than the others. remember that one tire is brand new ( 7000 less miles).... the brake pedal is still making a noise when i release it at the park mode or stop turn around stop at light or whenever. they have adjusted it 3-4 times. and with in mins. of them adjusting it, it is back to the same thing. this is a on going problem, wasted time and troubles. i do not want everybody to notice when i have my daughter in the car or i get hurt in an accident. this is important your reply help debra.w. *jb

Sunday morning (4/6/2008) i got in my car and backed down my driveway. while turning the wheel and going down the driveway i heard a very loud metal on metal sound. i put the car up on jack stands and inspected the suspension. i found the drivers side spring was not seated on the strut base. at this time i drove the car to sears auto repair in novi, michigan. while driving the car to sears the spring moved a couple times, made some noise, and affected the steering of the vehicle. sears inspected the springs and found the drivers side spring was corroded and fractured in a couple places at the top. i ended up replacing both springs and it cost $436.86. on monday (4/7/2008) i decided to go on the internet to find out if other people had the same issue with the ford focus springs. i found out it was not an uncommon issue. in fact ford issued a tsb (03m02s2) and extended the warranty on the springs to 150,000 miles or 10 years (only if serviced at a dealership). unfortunately i found this out after i repaired the car on sunday. i was never notified by ford of tsb on the springs. also, it should be noted that i bought the car used (about 1.5 years ago) from a ford dealership which should have inspected the vehicle for things like this (spring corrosion). on monday (4/7/2008) i decided to call the ford customer service line (800-392-3673) to see what can be done to reimburse my expenses and discuss the safety concern. i was told by the customer service representative that ford did not view this as a safety concern. i am a mechanical engineer designing safety critical suspension components (not coil springs) and to me this is not an acceptable answer. if the coil spring were to fracture further and cut my tire when driving on the freeway i can imagine that would not be a very safe situation. i don't understand ford not issuing a recall over a poor quality suspension component which could cause injury. if needed i have the old parts in my possession. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2001 ford focus. the contact heard a noise coming from one of the front wheels. when he drives over speed bumps, it sounds as if something is loose under the vehicle. he also stated that when he drives between 50-75 mph, the vehicle vibrates and the steering wheel shakes. he had the tires rotated and balanced and the front end aligned, however, the mechanic stated that those were not the cause of the vibration and noise. the contact found nhtsa recall number 02v289000 (steering: linkages). the contact stated that his vehicle would not start and he had the battery inspected. the mechanic stated that the battery was fine. the vehicle started when the contact looked under the hood and moved the battery cable. upon closer inspection, he realized that the cables looked and smelled burnt. he then discovered nhtsa recall number 02v288000 (electrical system:battery:cables). he notified ford about the two recalls and was informed that his vin was excluded from both. the contact feels that his vehicle should be included since he is experiencing the same failures. the current mileage was 43,800 and failure mileage was 38,000.

Yesterday morning as i was backing out of my driveway i heard a clunk in the front end of my ford focus and when i drove the car pulled to the left. i drove my car to the dealership about 3 miles away. after explaining the problem to the service rep he told me it might be a spring failure that is covered by a recall. i was surprised i had not been notified of this recall and he told me they only do something about it if the consumer complains! this is crazy! what if i had been going 70 mph when the spring broke? this is the second recall i haven't been notified about this year. earlier is was a fuel pump that failed causing the car to lose acceleration, this time as i was driving 70 miles an hour! the part was replaced free of charge as it was covered by the recall. *jb

Our son was driving his 2001 ford focus on a small back road near a shopping center. he was driving appromimately 20 mph thru a slight curve approaching a stop sign. as he was approaching the stop sign, he lightly applied his brakes and turned the steering wheel to negotiate the slight curve in the road, but his steering had failed - unable to negotiate the curve his car veered into oncoming traffic lane then back to hit the curb. the impact activated the air bags, shattered the windshield and the wheel was completely broken off. it appears that the control arm had a completely clean break - usually not seen in an accident. this was reported to me by several ford employees as a very suspicious break as well as the tow driver from the ford road side assistance. our son also reported two days prior to the accident that he felt a severe vibration in the front right end of the 2001 ford focus. he pulled over to check the car- but could not see anything wrong - continued and the vibration had ceased. we are thankful that this did not happen on the highway as he usually travels on a daily basis.

2001 ford focus problems problem 1 - in the past, whenever i would transition between freeways, my car would begin to stall. i push the gas pedal, and nothing would happen for at least 10 - 15 seconds. it happened mostly on a circular on ramp. and i think this problem lead to the next issue. problem 2 - i had to replace the fuel pump (which was expensive). i think this issue happened due to this statement i read nhtsa investigators said the alleged engine stall problem may be caused by debris accumulating in the gas tank, blocking fuel from being delivered to the engine. eventually, this debris problem causes strain on the fuel pump. and now, my check engine light came on. i checked the issue, and they said it's a gas vapor leak or something to that affect. they told me to keep an eye out for a gas leak. that issue maybe from the mechanic who fixed it, but if ford would have put a recall for that issue, i wouldn't be having this problem. problem 3 - i took my focus into ford to get a buzzing sound checked out. they fixed the bearing problem because my car was under warranty. now, 2 years later, the sound is back. i read a statement ...a rear-wheel bearing failure that could lead to a wheel falling off... i am afraid that this noise i hear today is due to that same problem 2 years ago. i called ford and they told me it was going to cost me close to $400 to repair it. first of all, that's a lot of money to me. secondly, i'm very afraid for the safety of my wife. i'm afraid something might happen when she drives the car. third, i don't think it's fair for me to have to repair something that is faulty due to the manufacturer. *nm

I have had nothing but trouble with this car since i have had it. the rear end makes loud noise, i have brought it back to the dealership numerous times, and they always tell me nothing is wrong. it makes a roaring noise in the rear end, and something is scrapping on the tire on the rear driver side. in july, i was traveling on the highway with my 3 kids, and the tire on the rear driver's side just went to pieces. we were in a terrible accident. we went off the highway into the woods where the trees stopped our acceleration. the airbags did not come out. i was so thankful to be alive, and my kids also. we sustained about 8000 dollars worth of damage. the car was repaired, and now the same tire that blew out, and was replaced by the repairman is worn again. i am afraid everytime i drive. i can't afford another car, and no one wants to take it as a trade-in because of the botched deal upon purchase of this car. this is the car from heck. now my warranty has expired, and the roaring noise in the rear is getting louder and louder. i have had the most horrible experience in my life with this car. it is a lemon on wheels, and the dealership always says nothing is wrong. i have had a conversation with another focus owner, and she has described some of the same problems. i have also had conversations with mechanics at the dealership, and they speak of all the focus' they see as trouble. please help. *nlm

Rear tires bald at 20,000. i have replaced 4 tires and need to replace 2 more. i have 42,000 miles on my car. i have rotated the tires all along, but they always end up wearing quick in the rear. for example one set of tires had great tread when they were rotated to the back with about 15,000, then at 20,000 they were bald!!! (like something in the rear chewed them up) car jumps side to side when hitting minor bumps in road and on highway, it feels like car doesn't have good control because of this. dealership and ford rep. say tires are not covered under warranty of course and claim not to find any other problems. they blame it on the driver style. funny this has never ever happened to me before, including my first focus lemon i had for 25,000 miles (they replaced my first focus for us for fuel problems they couldn't fix) i kick myself for agreeing to exchange for a new focus. nevertheless, it really seems like an engineering/design flaw or something else in the rear of the vehicle that is making these tires wear so fast. *jb

I have had more repairs incidences with 2001 ford focus than is normal on any car. if most of the repairs had been in the first 18 months i could have easily declared a lemon. unfortunatley they have been since that time. most recently i have had the rear wheel bearings replaced for the second time on a 3 year old car and am in the process of having the steering column replaced for the second time. i went through over 3 full sets of tire in less than a year and a half. and less than a year ago i got pulled over by the police because i had absolutely no lights in the back of my vehicle. ford dealer charged me to replace the rear light housing and some wire that had shorted out.*ak
