Clogging of the fuel delivery module (fdm) filters in the subject vehicles can lead to stalling and other related symptoms.these symptoms become increasingly obvious to the driver as the clogging gradually increases over extended periods of driving.stalling in these vehicles is most likely to occur when accelerating through a right hand turn such as merging into freeway traffic when the fuel level in the fuel tank is less than 1/4 full.more than 90% of the stalling complaints pertain to the original design fdm installed in my 2000 and 2001 (partial year) focus vehicles. ford has decided to conduct a campaign (03v-482) to address stallingin these vehicles.the smaller number and rate of complaints associated with the interim and current fdm designs indicate improvement but also reflect a shorter time in service for these designs. accordingly, odi will monitor the stalling performance of my 2001 - 2002 focus vehicles equipped with interim and current design fdms.

Fuel pump started to cause car to stutter, stall, completely die. has stalled out on interstate in heavy traffic, in the middle of busy afternoon 4-lane traffic; both times barely making it of traffic and being hit by oncoming traffic w/children in the car! car manufacture date is 09/01 in mexico. had fuel pump replace and has failed both times, cost is too expensive for me! already paid over$1000 for parts and labor! no recalls on this car regarding the fuel system or the ignition switch locking up!!! i have seen more and more of these 2 problems with the early ford focus, why hasn't something been done yet???????

Car was running funny for about a week.leaving a store parking lot. i pulled out on the highway and car started missing real bad and stalled.would not start back up. i had it towed to the garage and was told after they looked at it that it needed a new fuel delivery system or fuel pump and stuff. another known issue by ford motor company, but not for my ford focus.the guy i pulled out on probably thought idiot.

2002 focus, stalling out at high speed with no warning. when it happens it's like trying to drive a car without a battery. nothing works. happened 10 times in a car with less than 70k miles. we replaced fuel pump, fuel filters, coil, spark plugs and wires, and car will not stay running. keeps stalling. how many complaints before this model is recalled. someone is going to die at some point since the car cannot be controlled by the driver when this phenomenom occurs. ford says there is no known problem with this model. i shouldn't have to replace a fuel pump on a car with less than 70kon it. ford did change the fuel delivery module for other years but says the problem was not on 2002 model. obviously they changed it for a reason. this model needs to be recalled and have the new fuel delivery module installed.

Fuel pump in my 2002 ford focus failed suddenly as i was merging onto a 50mph highway in january 2010. the car just literally died, without warning. fuel intake stopped and so did the car. i was lucky it was early on a sunday morning and traffic was light. if i had been in heavy traffic, this sudden failure would have posed a grave safety risk. the repair cost $700. ford refused to cover any of it. in a search of internet articles and your web site, i found this fuel pump failure to be a well-documented problem in 2000 - 2002 ford focus'. i am concerned that they replaced the original defective pump with an exact replica of the original pump, exposing me to continued danger. *tr

2002 ford focus exhibits engine hesitation when the fuel tank is below 1/4 full. there are acceleration problems and the car has completely lost power on at least one occasion while driving on the highway. this began to happen with 80,000km on the car and now always happens when driving at highway speeds with only 1/4 tank of gas. complaints to ford about how this is the exact same condition that caused them to issue a recall on 2000 and 2001 focuses (03n01) have not resulted in any offer to replace the fuel pump for free. *tr

2002 ford focus bought the end of march 2009, now sits in driveway, because ford will not fix fuel delivery module failure, because of vin# not on list as being one of the 671000 units affected. the car is doing the same thing as all the other 671000 that were affected, surging, loss of power, stalling, hesitation. we were going down the road, changed lanes and it started doing this, now i have had 3 mechanics work on this car, no help replaced fuel pump, battery, fuel filter etc, no luck. it starts when it wants will run then it starts losing power, stalls. we did expect problems with used car, but not one that should have been included in a recall and fixed. if accident happens because of this problem ford will be at fault. *tr

My 2002 ford focus zts suddenly stalled in heavy, fast moving traffic. i had to wrestle the car to the curb without power steering or power brakes while at the same time avoiding traffic. i took it to the shop and they said the fuel pump has failed and needed replacement. total cost estimate is nearly $800. this is a common problem in 2001 and 2000 models and this part is even covered in an extended warranty for those years. however, the 2002 is not covered. i think that this should be a safely concern for ford but i think they are doing the bare minimum. i will never buy another ford again. no wonder they are having such difficult times at ford! *tr

Faulty ignition cylinder lock, fails without warning. i had it replaced 12/15/07 and it is now defective again on 4/6/09. i had it fixed last time for $200, but it can cost up to $400. how this isn't a safety issue is beyond me. then again the pinto's exploding gas tank wasn't deemed a safety issue by ford, either. *tr

I purchased a used 2002 ford focus in fl. while driving it to my home in tn, i experienced stalling at hwy speeds. i changed the fuel filter and continued on my trip. it stalled again and wouldn't restart. i had it towed to a ford dealer that diagnosed the problem as the alternator and battery. i replaced them both. the car started and i began my travel back home. upon my return home, when i would utilize the car, i would experience stalling under varying conditions. i took it to a mechanic who could not find that problem, but did replace the thermostat. typically the car would run for several hours before the stalling would begin. i could usually allow the engine to cool for approximately 20-30 minutes and the car would start. i could drive for approximately 15 minutes before it would stall again. my latest experience happened at hwy speeds. after 30 minutes of travel the car stalled and has not restarted since. i contacted ford who informed me that my car was not part of their recall (s) due to where it was assembled. i find it very coincidental that my car is experiencing the exact problems that the recalled cars experienced. is there a course on action that i should take? *tr

I drive a 2002 ford focus wagon, mileage 85,578. two days ago i had trouble starting it. i did get it started but everytime i took my foot off the accelerator the engine stall. there was no check engine light warning prior to this or during the event. i was able to drive my car home, but had to restart it each time i had to stop. the next morning it drove fine but i took it to a ford dealer for diagnosis and repair. i was told it was a fuel pump failure and it cost me over a $1000 for repair. (parts lister were sender, gasket, kit, tube, gasket, filter). in researching recalls i found that model years 2000-2001 were having this exact same problems and a recall was determined for this. i do normal driving - 70% highway, 30% in town. my car is just over 5 years old, i don't believe that normal wear and tear should cause the fuel pump to fail. it seems to me that this is some kind of defect in the original part or assembly. *tr

Driving my 2002 zx5 ford focus around pittsburgh, with less than a 1/4 tank the engine started stuttering. then the car stalled. i turned it back on and drove about a 1/4 mile when it started stuttering and shaking pretty bad again. when i tried to accelerate, there was no power and the engine stalled again. i waited a little before turning it back on. it did the same thing twice more; once it stalled when i was doing a left turn at a busy traffic intersection and the other while driving down a crowded avenue. fortunately i was able to make the 2-hour trip back home without any incidents. i took it to the ford dealership in my town and they told me they needed to replace the fuel pump, fuel filter and also perform a fuel flush. the total cost is roughly $600.00. i have been looking in the internet and there is a history of failures with the fuel delivery module on 2000-2001 focus. ford has claimed that the problem was solved in 2002. my bumper-to-bumper warranty expired this past january and the dealership says that since my car is 2002 the extended coverage program 03n01 does not apply in my case, thus i have to pay for the repairs. i disagree and i do not feel that the cost should be my responsibility. my car shows all the symptoms described on the 03n01 document, which is a quality issue that ford should have resolved and clearly has not. it is unsafe driving a car that can stall without warning leaving the driver stuck in a dangerous situation. *jb

There is a line that went straight into the engine's intake that has been leaking fluid since 2,000 miles and was inspected by deler who told to me that it was nothing. but the engine case should not have a large leak of fluid that soon. finally now, they have done something on this and replaced the hose, as it was seen once more and knows of all the times reported. i hope this is just not a easy fix or this now hasn't caused any damange to the inside of the engine itself, as the engine has been in the shop for riding rough. they told me last time that the part of the transmission that was fixed would fix this. i think it is due to the oil leak on the top of the engine case since it was new. a new car should never have a oil leak on a engine case.

Approximately 3 weeks ago, while driving on the interstate (~65 miles per hour), a cooling system light came on (2002 ford focus, manual transmission, 46,000 miles), and instantaneously, the car stalled. it almost threw me into the windshield. the car recovered and did not die, and i was able to get to where i was going. it happened again a few days later while making a right hand turn (~20 miles per hour). i brought it to pep boys, who could find nothing wrong. it stalled and died two blocks away from pep boys, so i brought it to the ford dealership. i asked them to check on any recalls because i have noticed that many focuses have this problem. they called me to tell me that it was definitely the thermostat , thermostat housing assembly and o ring, and i needed an oil change (which was done at pep boys one week earlier). they wanted $1100.00 to fix it, so i took my car home. today, i drove it to a mechanic, and it killed twice, and stalled three times (driving no more than 30 mph). the hazard light came on by itself while i was driving. the mechanic just called to tell me that the fuel pump is bad, and that is what was causing the stalling. it is a shame that i could have been killed in this car, and no recalls have been done on the 2002 ford focus for faulty fuel pumps. *tr

My 2002 ford focus with 80,000 miles stalls when going high speeds, and it has happened 5 times, to date. the last time i was going 55 mph on an entrance ramp to the freeway, with over 1/4 tank of gas when the engine stalled, vehicle lost power, including power steering. i had to slam on the brakes and stop in v where road split, came very close to having an accident. took it to ford dealership at recommendation of ford, determined it was the fuel pump. the first person we talked to at ford said they would fix it once we took it in and pay for diagnostic, the second person we called at ford after taking it in said it is our responsibility to replace the part. i am extremely concerned about this problem, it is a major safety hazard to lose steering and power at high speeds. *jb

My ford focus 2002 is starting to stall & hesitate while driving. i originally had believed it was bad fuel but it is recurring & once it stalls it is difficult to nearly impossible to keep running when putting it into drive. i have had it towed once & looked at by my mechanic, who is puzzled at this point (fuel additive, oil change, filters changed, spark plugs cleaned). it seems to be worse when the gas gage is @ or below a 1/4 of a tank. i have read that there was a similar problem with the 2000-2001 models & am inquiring if anyone with a 2002 is reporting such incidents. i bought the car used (from a ford dealer) with 12,000 (i think) miles on the speedometer & have been fairly happy until just the last 60 days. i can tell you that i had no problems until i ran very low on gas one night & stopped & filled up at a station that i normally do not use, but it is a station that does a great deal of business in the area where i work. i thought that i may have gotten some bad fuel or had run the tank so low that gunk from the bottom of the tank had gotten into the fuel. i used some fuel additive & i know that my mechanic (after towing it) also used a fuel additive...everything was fine for a couple of days but then it was hesitating/jerking while i was driving to work on a 1/4 of a tank of premium fuel (my mechanic suggested i only put in $10.00 of gas in case it was the fuel pump). my mechanic does not believe it is the fuel pump because once he got it to run & he had it running hot he had no problems...he feels i may need to just wait it out...stalling while in traffic is a bit too adventurous for me!!! *nm

Car sputtered, stalled, and died in traffic on two different occasions (one month apart), requiring towing. i would describe the symptom as fuel starvation, like a bad fuel pump or filter. both times, it occurred with a warm engine, 1/4 tank of gas, and accelerating normally from a stop. mechanic subsequently detected no problems, except blown fuel pump fuse. *nm

Vehicle has stalled numerous times without warning, once while a semi was following close behind. after the vehicle stalls, i have to wait anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours for it to start back up and not stall. i have noticed that the 00-01 models are covered by recall for a defective fuel pump but my 02 model is not covered by it. i have also noticed that the 02 model could have been manufactured with two different types of fuel pumps. the fuel pump the car had installed depends on what date it was manufactured. i unfortunately have a vehicle within the date range of being manufactured with the older and defective fuel pump as my vehicle was built in october of 2001. why is my vehicle not covered in this recall when it was manufactured with the exact same defective part that the 00-01 models have? *jb

R.e. ford focus 2002 fuel pump failure vin 3fafp31382r162628 i was sitting in the car with the engine idling waiting to pick my wife up from work at around 5pm cst. as she approached i turned off the engine and exited the vehicle so she could drive. up to this point we have loved our focus because it has always been reliable. when she started up the engine, it started to shake. the shaking became progressively worse and then the engine started to sputter. she turned off the engine and waited a minute and then restarted. the shaking continued at a lesser intensity so she attempted to drive the vehicle. about 25 feet later, in the middle of busy office building access road, the engine stalled. she tried to restart the engine to no avail. it sounded like the engine was not getting any fuel. we had a 1/4 of a tank. we check the fuel pump fuse and tried the fuel pump reset switch. thinking that the fuel tank indicator might be defective and that the car might be out of fuel, my wife had a co-worker driver her to a local gas station to get gas. adding gas did not resolve the problem and the fuel tank indicator showed the added fuel. when none of the quick fixes worked, we had the vehicle towed to apple valley ford in apple valley minnesota for servicing. they identified the fuel pump as the cause and because it is not covered by the 2000/2001 focus extended warranty for the same problem, we will have to pay around $600 to repair the car. i am furious about the cost but more so about the dangerous and untenable situation this defect puts my life and the life of my loved ones. how could the 2002 not be included? after research into this issue, i am angry that our lives are not consider important enough to ford or to the nhtsa. i shudder to think what could have happened if the engine had stalled on the freeway. there are plenty of recent complaints online by other 2002 focus customers who have had to replace their fuel pumps multiple times. *nm

I own a 2002 ford focus and having troubles with hesitation and stalling when the fuel tank nears or below a quarter of a tank of fuel. replaced the fuel filter trying to remove possible problem. problem still excists. researched and found that ford has identified years 2000-2001 focus's with the same defect in the fuel delivery module. since this vehicle is driven by our college aged daughter, i am very concerned about the safety of this condition. i telephoned ford customer relations and they have indicated an unwillingness to act in correcting this defect. i further identified that there was a current extended coverage program 03n01 for the 2000 and 2001 year models. further in a odi resume, investigation #ea02-022 indicates that 2002 year vehicles are also being affected.

On a trip to florida from nc, my engine light came on. the following week, it turned off on it's own. a week later the light came on again. before i had the diagnostics run, it went off again. four days before the incident date, the light once again came on. during all of this, the car ran fine, no stalling, no surges or failures. i parked my car at work, and 12 hours later came out to go home, only to find my car would not start. after having it towed to a service station, i found out that my fuel pump was shot, and had to be replaced. this car is only 2 years old, and a fuel pump should last a lot longer than that. and the fact that i have to pay $500 out of pocket for ford using a faulty part is not acceptable. i'll never understand why the investigation on this matter was closed. a recall needs to be enacted. the car is in the shop at this time, and i'm not sure if they still have the old part. i shudder to think what would have happened if my car had just quit on the way to florida with my four year old daughter and i alone on a busy i95.*ak

Car was shaking violently while idling. was fine while driving, but when gas was not applied it would shake and die. dealership quoted $80 just to look at it. i went to auto zone for free computer analysis, which said oxygen sensor needed replaced. i replaced it, but the problem was not fixed. a random gentleman at auto zone said it sounded like an air leak. i used starter fluid to lightly spray on hoses in engine to find a leak (engine revs when you hit a hose with a hole). i spent 4 dollars replacing a small rubber elbow and fixed the problem. the existing elbow right in the back center of the engine was burnt completely through with about a 2 inch hole. *tr

Car stalled while driving - would not re-start - between 1/2 to 2/3 full tank - independent garage diagnosed faulty fuel pump, said fuel pump relay was smoking and red-hot - luckily happened in town, was scheduled to drive into chicago on 90/94 with family members including a child just 2 days from now! - have read history on this problem, can't believe nhtsa allowed ford to wait for failures - apparently ford's fix on this problem is not correct, as this is a 2002 model car - car towed to dealer for repairs, awaiting outcome. *ak
