The car is equipped with a 6-speed dual clutch automatic transmission. while under heavy braking the car began to stall. the result was the brake pedal losing power assist from the engine. then because the engine was trying to recover from the near stall, i was unable accelerate to avoid an oncoming car. the engine did recover, but it took several seconds (and a lot of bucking and sputtering) before i was able to move the car after coming to a stop. the week prior, i had the car in for service at a local ford dealership because the car would shudder during acceleration. the dealership reprogrammed the transmission and the problem is still there, but less noticeable than before being serviced. this new issue with stalling under heaving braking did not occur prior to the servicing. after the near accident, i wanted to know if the problem was a fluke or if it would happen again. i have found that i can recreate the issue almost every time the car nears a stop under heavy braking. the car is scheduled for service for this issue.

I have reported to the dealership several times about the jerking and stalling when i take off and attempt to accelerate. they reprogrammed the transmission module, but it still does it. *tr

Just like everyone else, the car stutters and hesitates to accelerate at slow speeds. the transmission feels as though it is going to fall out of the car. i have taken it to the dealership, and the reprogrammed the transmission. they said it could take up to 2 weeks for the car to relearn my driving habits. it has been 2 months, and the car continues to stutter and shake. *tr

My vehicle transmission was reflashed at the dealership due to hesitation, stuttering, and other issues at low speeds. this occurred after about 1000 miles (dealer said it would have to re-learn my driving habits). i was trying to cross an intersection and car almost stalled out, bucked, and barely made it across the intersection. vehicle is still have issues at slow speeds and initial acceleration. i took vehicle in again, and was told that is just the way these cars work and nothing they could do. *tr

The new vehicle was purchased on 9/3/12. calls to the service department began on 9/5/12 for complaints of 'bucking and jerking' of the car in low speed shifting. the car was accepted on 9/8/12 for repair of multiple paint chips on the front of the car and for evaluation of the shifting irregularities. upon delivery of the car (53 odometer miles) the customer was informed that the paint chips had been repaired and the transmission computer was reset. the computer reset was not recorded on the service agreement for that date. on 12/5/12, the car abruptly stopped accelerating and metal grinding prevented use. the car was held from 12/5/12 until 1/8/13 (35 days, odometer reading 7,068 miles) for repair of a broken rear window channel, repair of transmission with replaced clutch. on 1/23/13 the vehicle was towed again due to not starting during multiple attempts by the owners and the tow truck driver. the vehicle was returned to the owner on 1/25/13 with a service report noting a weak battery. the battery was charged by the service provider and no other service codes were reported. on 1/28/13, the steering wheel required both hands to turn and the car narrowly missed going off of the road. upon attempt to restart, the ignition was weak and multiple warning lights displayed on the dashboard. the odometer reading reset to '0' and the mpg reading went blank. the car had significant change in ignition sound and with uncharacteristic humming noise and was turned off again. when the car was on the tow truck with the ignition off, key out, and door open, the radio began playing and could not be manually turned off. the car was transported to the dealership. as of 2/3, the car has been out of service for 46 days due to multiple infractions. the vehicle has had symptoms of stalling, failure to start, and loss of power steering. alternator being replaced 2/4. *tr

The vehicle has a lack of ability to accelerate without clutch slippage from a stop and frequent shuttering during transmission shifts. this, in turn makes the ford focus unsafe to drive while merging or crossing oncoming traffic lanes.

On 1/23/2013 at appox at 10:15 am i was driving to work! i was driving west bound 10 fwy! i was going about 75 mph in the fast lane. when all of a sudden the car speed drops to 30 mph in a matter of seconds, i right away turn on my hazards! but do to the fact that i was` in the fast lane it was very hard to get over safety as the car felt like it was going to turn off. i was very scared and afraid for my life i honestly thought that i was going to get hit and end up in the hospital.the thought of not making it did cross my mind. i tried pushing the gas petal to regain speed as the car did not allow me to do so. the rpm cage was going from 0 to 7 with in seconds. i begin to attempt to get the car over to my right shoulder towards safety. all i can see throw my rear view mirror and hear was all the cars that started honking at me, flipping me off, barely messing me as all the cars had to swerving around me. i begin to shake as it was a very scary feeling being inside the car while all you can do is see which car will me the one that's actually going to hit my car and the chain reaction that it could have caused. as i get over the four lane trying to not get hit by the speeding cars, the car turns off and i am now stuck in between the 10 fwy going west bound and the interchange to the 57 fwy going north and south bound. now being stuck in the middle of these two busy fwy's i felt my life was in extreme danger as my mind didn't let me concentrate because all i my mind could pay attention to, was the rear view mirror as i seen the cars again swerving from hitting me and all i can hear again is the cars honking at me. i get on the my cell phone and call [xxx] for help !!!!(husband) we called ford roadside service!!!! and the tow company was there with in 20 mins !!! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Have a 2012 focus se. purchased in may of 2010. since july of 2010, i have been taking it to the local dealership where i purchased the vehicle complaining that the car was surging, shuddering, and when i hit the gas pedal, it feels like the car stalls, gets no gas, or has trouble getting into gear. of course, there are no known issues until a recall. finally, the problem can be addressed. i take it in, they fix it it still shudders, and feels like it's going to stall out in the intersection. next thing, my car overheats and dies at 11pm on the side of the interstate. i take to a different dealership and they say, well the clutch is bad and the cooling system is bad. great 2012 car and two items have already went out. they change the clutch and cooling system, now when i back up, it grinds and bogs down. i have had my car for 2 years in may, 39,000 miles on it, and it's been in the shop a total of 4 times. they have changed the clutch and the cooling system. was told the clutch needed several hundred miles to break in gave it about 500, still grinds when i back up, more so on an incline. although now, it's decided it wants to studder when it starts. so it's back int eh shop for the 4th time, and i'm yet again in a rental car. i have a customer service guy through ford, he's useless... i can't even get him to return a phone call. what is the point of him being there if he's not going to do his job. i don't feel that i'm getting any resolutions from the local dealerships i have dealt with, or from your customer care manager. i want a replacement vehicle. i have worked with ford over 2 years and the vehicle is still having problems. of course the dealership tells me this is an isolated issue. please go to edmunds, com and you will see that this is not an isolated issue... there are multiple reports of the same problems that i am having.

This is an ongoing issue with the automatic dual clutch transmission. like most everybody else, i am experiencing the same hesitation and shuddering from a stop and the same clunking sounds in the transmission. i have had the vehicle into my local ford dealer, woody anderson ford, for a diagnostic check and like everybody else, they said that is a normal driving characteristic of the new-style transmission. while i initially accepted that response, i have become increasingly unconvinced of their assessment as while trying to merge onto the parkway, the vehicle failed to respond to a downshift and lost all forward gears. in traffic, the car would not accelerate and when i moved the gearshift lever into the manual position, it would not engage in any gear i selected. i was able to safely steer off to the hard shoulder, place the car in park and then back in drive and it was able to accelerate again...with a shudder in first gear, of course. it appears that ford does not have a realistic fix for this vehicle (unless the costly seal leak is the actual culprit) and therefore, i have not brought it back to ford for another check even though i did schedule an appointment but was unable to make it. there appears to be a real problem here with this transmission and moreso, the lack of confidence that it's drivers/owners have in it. it is a problem that is not being addressed with action. like many others, i am concerned about the safety of this transmission. *tr

I ordered the car from ford in 2011 as soon as they allowed orders. i have approximately 27,800miles on the car. i have yet to get the fuel economy that ford stated. i do both city and highway everyday and my combined fuel has not gone over 27 miles per gallon since i have owned it. i have even had it run out of gas on 3 separate occasions when the car was registering 30 and 34 miles to empty. *tr

I bought the car brand new (12 miles on it) and from the beginning it would make weird noises when i would take off or accelerate. i took it back to the dealership and they drove it and also heard the noise but said they could not find the cause and not to worry about it unless it got worse. i took the car back when it got worse and left it for an entire day but they did not have time to look at him. the car then started shaking and stalling out when i took off from lights and when going up hill. i took the car back and they had it for a week and said they had to take the transmission out and work on it and it should be fine. they said they are fully expecting ford to recall the transmissions. my transmission is now overheating when i am in slow traffic. it also rolls backward when i am stopped on an incline and accelerate to go forward. i have been looking online and this appears to be a major problem that is going to end up getting people hurt! *tr

I've experienced shudder at take off, while pulling onto road transmission can't find gear leaves me in the middle of intersection, rpm spike and drop while shifting and a violent shudder at same time, chatter noise when shifting, list goes on.....after the fourth visit to another dealer parts fixed were clutch because it was being stripped, clutch slave, and a whole other list of parts. week later problem came back parts fixed were clutch, clutch forks, clutch motor and more. week later and sixth visit for same problems took the service manager for a ride. he experienced my problems and were now getting a field service tech on it. service manager also told me if i'm on a decline with the nose down and give it a little gas i will always get the shutter and it's stripping the clutch, that's a characteristic. also when the vehicle is shifting at higher speeds the rpm fluctuate and shutter is another characteristic the transmission is trying to find a gear. by no means was the service manager on the side of ford just stating what's these transmissions are doing. i have a case open with ford have written a letter inquiring about the buy back if i don't get the response i want i'm taking my case to court. talked to an attorney and that's my best case of action. just all around not a safe car. and the sad thing it's probably going to have to take a death or serious injury before ford motor company starts taking the consumer seriously. here's comes another explorer problem.

I purchased my 2012 ford focus in may of 2011 - a fairly early build of the remodeled vehicle. at around 20k miles, the car started exhibiting some unusual noises. the dealer told me they were normal characteristics of the transmission. since then, several other focus owners (focusfanatics.com) have had the same issues. my car now makes a grinding noise when shifting into reverse, 2nd, 4th, and occasionally 6th gear. when climbing hills, the car appears to have little-to-no power and makes a horrid rattling noise that i am now aware is the clutch slipping. while in bumper-to-bumper traffic, the car bucks and jerks. the car has an automatic dual-clutch transmission, so there is no way that i can change the shifting patterns. it turns out this is a common issue caused by a leaking seal contaminating the clutch with oil, but consumers are needing to fight the dealers to get it fixed as it is a costly repair. i've tried repeatedly to get it corrected under warranty and keep getting turned away. aside from the fear of my own safety, i also assume this will be detrimental to the life of other components (actuators/synchros/engine mounts/etc.) within the power train that i may need to pay to replace out-of-pocket after the warranty expires. aside from repairing it myself, a recall is my only hope. *tr

I recently purchased a 2012 ford focus in may. i took the vehicle back to the ford dealership, to report a problem. however, the first thing the repair person did was give me a print out of what the car does. this car has no power, it shakes, and will not go,. i feel that car is trying to stall out. it is worst than my old 1998 ford contour. it rides better than this car and it is 14 years old. i am very concern about my safety with the car. in addition, everyone else and including myself, which is embarrassing, notices that this car does not change gears. it appears that it is stuck in one gear at the speed of 60 mph. i am very disappointed and afraid that this car may cause me to get into a car accident. i need help. what should i do? in addition, the warranty on this car is 60,000 miles or 5 years, which every comes first. *tr

These vehicles have two problems with the transmission that cause two separate safety issues. one is that it rolls back when you are moving your foot from the brake to the gas regardless of how fast you move it. the second is that, while they are saying that it is an automatic transmission, it has another sort of problem with the transmission because it is a dual one that acts as a standard and causes it to stutter as it moves down the road. when you pull out it doesn't want to go. *tr

On may 25, 2012, computer in car was reprogrammed per recall 12b37b.6 and repaired per recall 12s29c.6. i had noticed that the transmission was not as smooth as it was when i first purchased the car the year before. after this, things really began to go downhill. now the transmission is a total train wreck. the car rolls back on inclines. the first time this happened i almost hit the car behind me. the transmission grinds and shudders in low gears, especially when turning and slowing down or when starting out and trying to accelerate. on more than one occasion, i have pressed the pedal down to accelerate and gotten nothing. the car won't go. going up hill the car jerks and shudders as though it is about to shut down, like when you don't have the clutch and the gas at the right place. at these times, the car will drive like a twenty year old jalopy. all in all, i have taken the car in three times to have work done on the transmission, and each time it seems to be better for a few hours and then gradually get worse than it was before. the problem seems to be getting gradually worse. i know that i am not the only one having the problem with the 2012 ford focus. *tr

Several times i have been sitting at stop lights and when the light turns green and i press the accelerator nothing happens, then all of a sudden the transmission will grab and i have actually made the tires squeal and almost ate the back of someone's car. another thing i have noticed is that when parking on an incline, put the car in park and let off of the brake and a horrible noise comes from the transmission area - the dealer informed me that i should set my parking brake first before turning the car off??? today the car is in the shop for the 6th time and it is less than 8 months old. *tr

While driving on i-8 toward san diego i heard a engine revving up then transmission downshift suddenly. engine lost a considerable amount of power/torque ever since. for example i can not accelerate in 6 gear @ highway speeds. shift times sometimes are more then 2 sec apart which presents an enormous risk when driving in any traffic. car has been to kearny ford for repairs multiple times since with neither ford nor dealer providing any fix and telling me that 'it's operating within normal limits'. i am driving a rental ford focus with approximately same mileage as my car now and it does not exhibit any of the issues i have. at this point i feel that my own safety and my family safety are being put at risk. i can not safely drive this car on anything but empty or almost empty roads.

Car lunges when accelerating or attempting to shift thru automatic or sport mode of the transmission. transmission also temporarily pauses during shifting routine at all speeds, mostly at low speeds. it is like the cpu is overriding what the driver is prompting thru touching of the gas pedal or brake pedal. we've had it in to our local dealerships service department complaining about these conditions, they insist the car is working as designed. if so, ford is in denial and most certainly appears to be a design flaw. i describe these concerns as if i was having to learn how to drive, all over again. this vehicle is dangerous to drive, safety should always be everyone's number concern. ditto, the vehicle is not safe either. what is it going to take from ford to admit and resolve this problem, an injury accident? i hope not. then, top that off, we bought this specific vehicle for towing purposes. the factory requires the cpu and entire electrical system must be disconnected to tow. unfortunately, each time the cpu is turned back on (reconnect the negative wire at battery), the cpu thinks it is new, thus, the lunging, sporadic shifting starts all over again. help... ford won't listen. thank you *tr

My boyfriend and i bought a 2012 ford focus se hatchback on september first. after driving the car for a couple of days my boyfriend noticed that the transmission was not right but he thought this was happening just because the car was new. then, when driving to work i noticed that when i stopped on any incline street between taking the foot off the brake and placing it on the accelerator, the car rolled back quite quickly to the point that i almost hit the car behind me. days later, i started to feel that the steering required both hands at all times. it was constantly wandering and shaky specially during turns. to top it off on september 27th something terrible happened. i was in the drive way, i shifted from reverse to drive and the car took off at a lurch. the car accelerated so rapidly even with my foot on the brake pedal. i lost complete control of the vehicle. the car failed to slow down hitting two cars and tearing down a fence. i could finally stop the car when i quickly shifted to park. i do not understand how ford sells this car with all these problems risking people's lives. this is a serious issue. how many fatalities are they waiting for? are they going to do something ever about these malfunctions? this is ridiculous if i have known all these issues with this car, i would have never bought it for sure. *tr

Car lunges when accelerating or attempting to shift thru automatic or sport mode of the transmission. transmission also temporarily pauses during shifting routine at all speeds, mostly at low speeds. it is like the cpu is overriding what the driver is prompting thru touching of the gas pedal or brake pedal. we've had it in to our local dealerships service department complaining about these conditions, they insist the car is working as designed. if so, ford is in denial and most certainly appears to be a design flaw. i describe these concerns as if i was having to learn how to drive, all over again. this vehicle is dangerous to drive, safety should always be everyones number concern. ditto, the vehicle is not safe either. what is it going to take from ford to admit and resolve this problem, an injury accident? i hope not. then, top that off, we bought this specific vehicle for towing purposes. the factory requires the cpu and entire electrical system must be disconnected to tow. unfortunately, each time the cpu is turned back on (reconnect the negative wire at battery), the cpu thinks it is new, thus, the lunging, sporadic shifting starts all over again. help... ford won't listen. thank you

3 separate incidents have occurred in my 2012 ford focus all related to the transmission. the first incident occurred on august 25, 2012 while traveling at 40 mph, i suddenly lost power between the gas pedal and the car itself. the rpm's continued to climb but the car was no longer moving. took to ford dealer to be serviced and was told they could not find a problem. the next incident occurred on september 8, 2012 - not necessarily a safety concern but contributes to overall problem - pulling out of a parking lot, placed car in reverse, it did not move. took to ford dealer where the transmission was reprogrammed. the most recent incident occurred on september 9, 2012, i pulled out into 35 mph traffic, my car would not shift out of first gear, going 10 mph and revving but not accelerating fast enough to stay ahead of traffic. had car towed to ford dealer where it is at this time. *tr

The rolling back problem came first. when you are stopped on any incline, between taking your foot off of the brake and placing it on the accelerator, the car rolls back quite quickly, and i have almost hit the car behind me. the steering problems came a little later. the steering requires both hands at all times, and even then it is quite shaky. i feel car sick when i am the passenger because there is so much side to side movement. during turns, the engine feels like it is cutting out, it loses so much power, and i have to push the accelerator extremely hard just to get enough power to finish the turn. the scariest of all of the problems happens at higher speeds. it has happened to me three times. when i am driving on the freeway (60-70mph) and i begin to slow down, the steering gets out of control and goes back and forth so rapidly, i hold on for dear life trying to keep it in the lane, and the braking is not as efficient as it should be when this happens, and i have nearly escaped hitting the car in front of me. when i have been in this situation, i have started to brake right when i see the brake lights ahead, and i have had ample space to stop gradually and safely if i were driving a normal car, but in this car, it is out of control and the brakes won't work well when this is happening. this has happened on dry roads. this car terrifies me and the rain and ice haven't even hit yet. after i experienced these problems, i looked on the internet and was surprised to see how many others are having them too. the shop had my car for 13 days and they called me and said that it is perfect and they didn't fix anything and to come pick it up. i bought this car in june, it is now september, it had 500 miles when i took it to the shop. i left it there for now, i am terrified of this car and unfortunately i own it. *tr

When accelerating, whether from a dead stop or coasting, 1st, 2nd (& now starting to do it in 3rd) gears audibly rattle and clunk. very slow response time when accelerating after car is warmed up. the more it is driven in stop and go and/or city traffic, the worse the acceleration (and rattling when shifting) becomes. so much so that when trying to pull out into traffic on 09/04/12 i thought the car would be hit. i had 3 kids in the car with me! and i always allow plenty of time to pull out because of this issue. it has been a near constant issue with this car which was purchased in may 2011. car jerks when accelerating in stop and go traffic and will sometimes jump and rev into a higher speed. all the above issues had been addressed and fixed twice before the customer satisfaction recalls were sent out in may. issues are resolved for a limited amount of time and then start happening again. car still rolling back when brake is released at a stop on slight inclines. another customer satisfaction recall. minor issues: *can barely be heard when speaking on the sync system while driving *clock changes time randomly *rear defroster doesn't automatically turn off *fan speed changes after car is turned off to a random speed setting *radio will change to a random station *sometimes* after making a phone call. *tr

On 8/27/2012 i drove off the car lot with 7 miles on my new car. i noticed a little bit of rough shifting as the day passed. on 8/28 the car started bucking and jerking during acceleration. there was little power on inclines. the problem progressively got worse through the day. i set up an appointment to drop off for service the next day. took in for service on 8/29 and was told that the throttle body needed to be replaced. the car had 187 miles on it. on 8/30 i was told the car was fixed and i picked up my car. within a few miles the problem was back, but worse this time. i had some slight noise coming from the engine when the car was bucking and jerking. it almost stalled on a busy highway in rush hour traffic several times while on my way back to the dealer. it was struggling. the car is back in service with 220 miles on it. now they want to keep it for at least 3-4 days. 8/31 i was asked to drive the car with the mechanic to see if problem would reoccur. with the exception of a kick while pulling out of the dealership, the car drove ok, although we only drove around a block together. sales manager says that if the mechanic can't find any further problem, then i have to take the car back into my possession since it's my car. he says that sometimes things happen and i have to deal with it and let the mechanics do their job. i've had the car in my possession under 30 hours since i purchased it on 8/27. the car also has an issue with rolling back on an incline. *tr

Vehicle rolls back after i begin to accelerate when i am stopped at a red light. i did receive a recall notice that had this type of problem listed. vehicle had about 4700 miles on it. i took it in and they claimed that they fixed it but it could take up to 6 months for the adjustment to take place. this did not sound reasonable to me but they would not do anything further. this is definitely a safety issue when you are stopped in traffic. *tr

Purchased a new 2012 ford focus with automatic transmission in april, 2012. immediately experienced low speed transmission shifting problems and also discovered complete free roll backward, unending, until hitting level ground and/or hitting an object while rolling backwards on an incline, even while in gear. this is a serious safety and driver liability issue . dealership has re-programmed transmission on a technical service bulletin without success. dealership had me test drive another 2012 focus thinking it would not demonstrate the same safety problem...and to their surprise..the test drive vehicle they gave me also performed the same way on the free rollback while in gear. i believe the fundamental problem here is that ford has designed and manufactured in the 2012 focus line a standard/manual transmission (poorly shifted by software and dysfunctional on the free roll back issue) and is marketing it to all consumers as an automatic transmission. service department acknowledges that it truly is a standard/manual design. the window sticker and sales process misrepresents to the consumer that it is an automatic transmission. this may constitute consumer fraud on a national level leading to either class action litigation, total recall and/or individual cases of litigation. i am considering all of the above as the problem remains and has not been rectified. *tr

This is a ongoing problem with my focus. when accelerating from a stop the focus's automatic dsg transmission (in d) will quickly shift to a higher gear in an effort to minimize fuel consumption. during a stopped turn at a intersection this leads to a unsafe condition where commanded acceleration takes several seconds to happen. the problem happens like this: the car accelerates at a stop sign or parking lot. the car accelerates to 10-15 miles per hour. the driver lets off the gas during the turn part. the transmission shifts to second or a higher gear. the driver then commands a large acceleration - say due to oncoming traffic - and nothing will happen for several seconds. this is because the dsg transmission needs to shift sequentially into first and this takes several seconds. also it appears that the powertrain is disconnected while this shifting takes place. when the transmission finally selects first the acceleration can be sudden and unexpected. this has happened to me several times and i believe it is a dangerous condition. it can be avoided by manually selecting first - then shifting to d when the turn is complete. the car jerks, shutter.jumps, misshifts, rattles. the car has been back 3 times and reprogram 2 time tbs,abs.pcm. this car is junk and need be fixed. *tr

Since day one of the purchase of my (march ) 2012 ford focus the steering feels like it is constantly wandering, after an hour drive time, your arm is give out from the stress. my car also seems to have a flutter in the transmission or engine during take off. the car will also roll back while stopped on an incline. the dealer checked steering the 4th day after purchase and assured me the steering was fine, that it was new & tight. i did recieve a recall on the transmission to upgrade or modify some type of chip. i cannot tell any improvment since the upgrade. my wife & son hate to drive my car because they are afraid of the steering and rolling back....by the way it is an automatic transmission---i have never experienced this on any vehicle that i have owned in the past. *tr

I bought the 2012 ford focus sel on may 5th 2012. the car has had both front struts replaced, at 69 miles!! the car jerks and refuses to go when you give it gas after being completely stopped, i was almost hit pulling out onto a busy road because the care would not go!!!! the transmission needs to be replaced in this car, however grey daniels ford in brandon mississippi will not do that, so i have driven this vehicle approximately a week and a half since buying on may 5th, the rest of the time it has been in the shop. ford should have to fix these vehicles correctly. stop putting a bandaid on the problem and fix it already!!!! i guess they'll wait until someone gets killed because of their neglect to do anything about the problems.....but then who knows that might not even get their attention. i will never purchase another ford vehicle, that i can guarantee!!!

I just bought a brand new 2012 ford focus and i noticed shudder or vibration when starting to drive. i looked at the internet and found a this a common complaint among ford focus owners. please help us in compeling ford to do something about this.
05/07/2012150
Transmission shifts erratically. will not down shift when needed causing loss of control of the car. car will also roll back when you stop if on a slight incline. there is a voluntary recall by ford for this problem, however the remedies do not work. i have already had these remedies performed on my car over a year ago. the problems still exist. i expressed my concerns regarding these transmission problems over a year ago but ford has taken the stance as to ignore them. ford had prior knowledge of these problems and other problems on these cars before they were even introduced to the public. ford chose to put sales before consumer safety. this transmission problem is a serious safety issue, what is it going to take for the nhtsa for them to make this a involuntary safety recall, peolple getting killed? i do not feel safe driving this car neither should anyone else who owns this car.

While in drive, the auto transmission allowed the car to roll backward and hit the car behind me then lunged forward and hit the car in front of me. the hill was fairly steep as it was an off ramp from freeway at stop light. car has been to dealer 4 times for this problem but i am told it is a normal condition.
03/09/201256
On the drive home from the dealership, the day we purchased this car, we were stopping at a red light and it felt as though the road had some uneven surfaces. turns out that it was from the car, the transmission was shuttering as we came to a stop. i was concerned but we were late and could not go back to the dealer. well the car did it many times after that, sometimes on acceleration and other times while coming to a stop. it would not shift into first gear as i entered my driveway (it has a slight incline) and it would shutter all the way up. i took the car to the dealer and they ran an update from ford. this helped some, but it is still shifting funny and making a funny noise while shifting from first to second. it shifts way too soon and is generally in the wrong gear. if you need to accelerate to merge into traffic there is a huge delay. the car seems to wait way too long before going down into a gear that will allow this to not be unsafe! i took it back to the dealer for an unrelated repair was was given a 2012 focus as a loaner, the loaner is perfect! it exibits none of the problems my car does. this tells me this is not a normal issue. the car is still at the dealer, but i am sure the song and dance about my car is normal and my issues are normal are coming. i am not going to accept this explaination! i now know how this car should drive and mine is not driving normal. i researched this issue and there are many people dealing with this same problem.that means it is not just my car. i want ford to acknowledge that there is an issue and fix it.

I bought a 2012 ford focus sedan a couple weeks ago the next day i noticed slow jerky shuttering accerleration when at a complete stop then trying to acclerate. i did not think of anything was wrong until i researched it online finding similar complaints this is a problem and now the car is at the dealership and they currently have it. next there is a grinding noise while driving and turning sounds an example would be metal to metal on the brakes is the sound and last loose mirror when lifting the tab down to look at my daughter in the back seat the whole mirror goes down istead of slightly moving

My ford focus sel 2012 has been experiencing shuddering feelings when accelerating from stop. it feels as if the transmission is about to stall and then it kicks back up and jolts my cars back and forth for several seconds before resuming normal speed after 10 mph. these several seconds are vital when you are dealing with fast traffic in california or anywhere else for that matter. this created a delay in the acceleration time, almost causing an accident with oncoming traffic. i have contact several ford officials about this and they keep saying that it is normal and that there is a break in period. why was i not made aware of this when i purchased the car? this is a serious safety hazard and ford is just excusing it until my warranty period is up. two of my friends bought the same car and is experiencing the same issue. this is not an isolated incident and i would like to see proper action from ford to address this issue professionally.

I have experienced several potentially fatal occurences related to left foot braking and the brake over throttle overide software installed in my 2012 ford focus. when braking with the left foot and in a turn while feathering the throttle with the right foot, the automatic transmission shifts into neutral, the engine continues to rev without going into any gear. this condition has occurred no less than 22 times. the first incident happened while making a right hand turn but the next was a left hand turn. although the second incident occured crossing one lane of traffic, i would not like this condition to occur crossing 2 or 3 lanes of traffic and becoming a fatality. i am not the only person in the world who brakes using the left foot. now that i know what is causing this issue, i can duplicate it even braking at any speed and in a straight line. car has been to ford and had flashes of the computer installed with no change. ford is aware of this problem through emails from the service manager at my dealership. this condition can result in a serious and potentally fatal accident. this fix for the so called toyota floor mat problem has created an even more serious safety issue caused by of all things braking with the left foot. at the least , i should have the option to override the brake over throttle portion of the software by turning it off.

At between 8000 - 9000 miles on the odometer, car started having transmission problems. when accelerating from a stop, car would reach approx. 8 mph and instead of shifting up to next gear, went into neutral for 3-5 seconds, then proceeded to upshift and take off at a lurch. the check engine light came on and when i stopped, the reverse gear was also like being in neutral. now it is several months later, the car has had the transmission replaced by ford ( has spent nearly 10 weeks at ford service). since the replacement transmission, the car doesn't fall out of gear, but now when stopping and starting the car feels like it is going to stall out. this behavior is disconcerting given the history of falling out of gear when trying to accelerate and merge in to traffic. i feel this vehicle is a safety hazard.

I purchased a 2012 ford focus hatch. as soon as we drove the car we noticed the difference in the transmission. the sales man said he didn't feel it and that the car had to learn our driving habits. don't think a car learns 2 different driving habits as there are 2 of us driving it. but at low speeds either accelerating or decelerating the car shutters and shimmies way too much for our comfort. it seems this is an electronic problem but we thought we'd bring it in to have a trained tech look at it. the first attempt was a new module and that should fix it.... it didn't... so in a second time for a remapping of the computer...didn't help. ....in for a third time and the tech says ford is not allowing any fixes on this car... we have to wait! really? wait? i bought a brand new $21,000 car...... an automatic car! i been told it has to learn how i drive... i've been told it needs broke in...it has 5000 miles on it now how long does it take to break in?i'm told that it's as if i am driving a manual and this is normal.........hello!!!!! not a manual. i'm told this is just how this transmission reacts... and along with the shuttering is the hesitation upon accelerating that could cost me my life on a busy highway............... the remote key lock has confusion issues. it doesn't always recognize the signal and it has to be opened or locked manually. all i want is a fix and if there is no fix i want to be able to implement the lemon law on this car........ i expected more from ford for my 30 plus years of loyalty. after all isn't that what has kept ford going? all of us loyal customers that stayed with them thru the hard times? my family has bought over $100,000 in new ford cars and trucks and plenty of used ones as well. i really am sad that ford hasn't stepped up on this one and i am so sure i am not alone. listen ford execs..... we are paying attention!!! thank you!

Whenever accelerating from a stop there is a shudder in the power train as if the car is going to stall. after shifting into second gear the cars moves and shifts smoother. possibly dangerous especially when pulling into high speed traffic from a stop.

We bought our focus earlier this year and immediatley noticed stumbling on acceleration and rough idling. the car feels like it's going to stall when it taking off from a stop or when making hard accelerations. we took the car to the dealer the first week of ownership to have this looked at, but ford told us it needed to break in and that there were no error codes when they ran a diagnositc. the probelm has never been fixed although the symptoms were confirmed by the shop foreman. the second time we took the car in as the shuddering was worse, the dealer had it for over 30 days and put 700 miles on the car to no avail. we have all the paperwork documenting their testing and the dates they have had the vehicle. a rep from ford came out to take a look at the car as well during this time, and once again told them this was normal and would go away. we now have about 2300 miles on the car and it is only getting worse. we have filed a claim through ford motor company for a buy back on the car due to safety concerns but we were denied as of today, and also told that the car does not qualify as a lemon in the state of california. they have set us up for another appointment to go back to the dealer and see what they can do. before filing any complaints, we did research to see if others were having a simialr issue. there are multiple forums of people having these same issues (the best site to visit is focusfanatics.com). upon reading about everyone elses troubles, no one seems to have gotten a resolution and we feel that this next appointment we have set is really a waste of time. seems that ford is sweeping the problem under the rug and has no solution for this issue. in conclusion, we do love the way the car looks, rides, and all the great amenities ford has put in it's vehicles but this is a definete safety issue that is not being addressed at all by ford motor company.

This vehicle has some scary and sometimes dangerous transmission issues. it's not like a normal automatic with a torque converter, so some roughness is expected. but, this car often grinds gears, slips, grabs and lunges, and also rolls back on inclines. i have nearly been in several accidents when i have tried to accelerate into an intersection and the vehicle doesn't respond to the accelerator being depressed completely to the floor. it sometimes acts as if you are trying to start from a stop in 3rd or 4th gear. ford motors has continually said these problems are normal and the vehicle needs some break-in time. well, this vehicle now has over 6,000 miles. i don't think it's going to get better. if i get into an accident because of this, there are going to be some serious problems to handle with ford. i know i'm not alone in these problems. i have been on forums with many people having the same issues.

After feeling the automatic transmission was excessively lurchy, i came to stop at a traffic light on a busy road. when the light turned green i sat revving my engine and was unable to get the car to move. i put car in park and then back in drive with the same results. i tried the s mode with manual shifting and car still did not move. i eventually turned the car completely off and back on and this seemed to correct the problem. i found the situation very dangerous . apparently from what the dealership said the clutch was not engaging. it is an automatic transmission car. *tr

I was driving and stuck in traffic. going slow, 5-10mph, the car started shifting really strange, not moving when initially accelerating and then jerking from first to second gear. my destination was 3 blocks ahead of me so i stayed on route and parked when i arrived. as i got back into the car it wouldn't start. i managed to get the car to start after messing with the auto shifter and leaving the car in nuetral. once started the car would not go into gear, or move when placed into d, r or l. i shut the car down and it would not start again after that. the transmission control module (tcm) is what th edealer told me had failed. it took a solid 7 days to get my car back. the first couple of days were spent trying to figure out what went wrong. the car has always shifted strange and continues to shift strange to this day. the problem was fixed but i think it is just a matter of time before it fails again.

Was told this car had automatic transmission. after a few hundred miles on it, i noticed the transmission shifted sporadically and with no prediction. engine shuddered, car lost power and was not safe to drive. the key here is no prediction as to how the car will react when under acceleration. took to dealer and was told this isn't an automatic transmission - it's a computer- controlled manual that has to learn how you drive. dealer uploaded a computer update from ford. the next hundred miles of driving almost caused numerous accidents due to lack of acceleration and uneven performance. 6/4/2012 i tried to merge into traffic and car refused to speed up. i almost caused a major accident, but numerous drivers slammed on their brakes and/or swerved and averted multiple collisions. took the car to dealer 6/5/2012 and told them what happened. was told by head tech it just has to get used to how you drive. i told him there were three different people driving this focus. he said we can't, because that would just end up totally confusing the computer. as the car is too dangerous to drive, it is still at the dealer. miles on vehicle are under 800.
