The car was driving fine all of a sudden the freestar lost power, i was doing t most 40 mph because it was during rush hour on the i15 hwy by hesperia everything was fine and all of a sudden my car lost power and began to feel like it was loosing power and then i saw it go from forty to slower mpg and i had my foot on the accelerator i immediately pulled over as soon as i could and there was smoke and then there was fire my 1car was burnt a total loss my daughter and i barely escaped with our lives minutes before the van exploded someone had put us in her car and drove us forward saving our lives when the fire department arrived i walked back to my car and the fire had expanded far past where me and my daughter were standing. my daughter is still traumatized by the experience and so am i. we would of been severely burnt or died when the car exploded and everything caught on fire past the spot my daughter and i were standing the firemen could not believe that the fire had been so extensive. we lost everything my daughter loved, all her most precious material things we went from driving on a happy trip to the realization we could of died by the fire. if the passerby would not had put us in her car and drove us to safety. *tr

The vehicle will begin to act like it is going to stall at high speeds or going up hill. we notice it more when we accelerate really fast like an on ramp to the highway, but it also happens when it needs the extra power going up hill. i have taken it in and i was told it was water getting into the pcm causing electrical problems with read outs on temperatures and other things. we have already had to get the torque converter replaced a few years ago and i was told that it may have been to issues with the pcm.

The main engine computer (ecm, pcm, aka eec) constantly gets wet due to a design flaw. water drips down on the computer and will cause the engine just to die while driving the car on the highway. this causes a very dangerous situation!

When driving our van it started to jerk and the engine light started flashing. it then stalled out on us. it was raining that day and it continued to do this. the next day when the rain stopped it quit and ran fine, but started again the minute we hit any moisture. the computer in the van also started sending error messages constantly, check brake fluid, check oil, check rear brake lights, check traction control, check doors and so on when these things were checked there were no problems with them. the engine light continued to flash so we had someone look at it and fix it. they told us the coil pak was bad and replaced it for us. the van ran fine for 1 week and then this started again. so when i went online to do some research on this i found a site on topix, complaints about ford freestar that had 100's of complaints about this van. alot of people were having the same promblems and they took it to garages where they said it is a design flaw by ford that water gets up under the engine into the pcm (computer) shorts it out and then eventually messes up the coil. we continue to have all these problems with the van, it stalls out on me in rain or any moisture. i have had the van stall while turning onto a road and my van be stuck across the road right above a dangerous curve with my youngest child and i alone in the vehicle.

Tl- the contact owns a 2004 ford freestar. the vehicle shuts down frequently while in traffic. the check engine light illuminates before the failure occurres. the vehicle was taken to the garage numerous times. the garage replaced the gas filter, and cam sensor twice, but failure was not correct. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, the diagnose located the failure at the power control module. the dealer estimated cost to replace the power control module was $940.00. the manufacturer took a report 1898911628. the manufacturer stated they have not received reports concerning the failure and the contact might be the only person that has experienced the failure. the failure mileage was 79,000 and current mileage was 80,800. li

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 ford freestar. while driving 45 mph, the front driver's side tire shook heavily. the contact also heard a very loud noise coming from the engine. she took the vehicle to a mechanic and was informed that a new hub assembly and wheel bearings were needed. through online research, the contact discovered nhtsa campaign id number 04v446000 (wheels:cap/cover/hub). the manufacturer stated that the warranty was expired on her vehicle and that the recall was never repaired on her vehicle. it was unknown whether or not her vin was included in the recall. the vehicle has not yet been repaired, but the contact believes that the vehicle should be repaired according to the recall since the failures are identical. the failure mileage was 90,000 and current mileage was 98,000.

At approx. 60k miles, while driving at steady speeds between 40-45mph and 55-65 mph, the engine will stutter/hesitate for less than a second. the occurs at random but seems to be increasing in frequency and intensity lately. from the hundreds of complaints, the most logical in my view are a failed coil pack; the pcm module or a transmission sensor. my research alerted me to the hundreds of unexpected transmission failures that occurred without any prior warning. we are senior citizens and live and commute in a very rural area. if we had a transmission failure as has been reported/described repeatedly, our safety and welfare would be seriously at risk. we don't have another $30k to replace this van, so we are having the transmission rebuilt as a pre-emtive measure. we are also replacing the coil pack at this time. the dealer is to evaluate the other suspect components and replace as needed. the cost of these repairs and rental car is estimated to be about $3k. ford motor company will lose a bigger market share by ignoring these complaints. we have been a ford customer for decades. *tr

Does anyone read these? my daughter posted a complaint over a year ago. i just read through a number of complaints about the 2004 ford freestar's transmission problems. my son-in-law purchased this van for my daughter for mother's day of 2006 because they were expecting another son and outgrowing their jeep grand cherokee. in the winter of 2006 it started acting up. we had to go get them on christmas eve as they were broke down on the side of a country road on their way to our house for christmas. it was diagnosed a crank shaft sensor. after coming up with the money to replace that, it worked fine for a while. started again. they were told they most have got a faulty crank shaft sensor and replaced it again. some time later, it started again. they took it to a transmission specialist that replaced some more sensors. it ran fine all summer. winter of 2007 started again. replacing more sensors. again this winter, it is doing the same thing. this time it was diagnosed as the abs box on the undercarriage of the van. $400 for the part alone. my daughter was so excited because it ran better than it ever had and they thought they figured out the problem. now it is doing it again. it sometimes will not go in reverse. acts like it is taking off in 3rd gear. stalls out. this is their only vehicle. he is laid off. she is on the verge of losing her job due to attendance as a result of transportation issues. they are struggling like the rest of us to keep their home our foreclosure and their utilities on. the sad thing, they are still paying payments on this van! someone have a heart here! do something! it is the first ford they have ever owned. my son-in-law says he will buy foreign from now on. i own a ford also, i will never own another one either. they have contacted the ford dealership as well as the manufacturer and got no response. this is how they treat their customers. i guess they deserve to go in bankrupt in this economy! *tr

My family and i were stopped at a stop sign in our 2004 ford freestar. we turned left and almost at the same instant the car's engine started a revving noise and (lucky for us) out of the intersection the car wouldn't go. we were almost smashed by a truck turning the same corner. we had the car towed to our ford dealership. i was doing research on ford freestars and found they had torque converter problems. i called the dealership back and they couldn't give me any updates. at this time i told them of my research and told them it's probable the torque convert. they called back the next day and confirmed it's the torque converter. called ford customer service and they told us it's not on recall because 'there hasn't been enough accidents or deaths. there were almost 4 a week ago in il, lucky for my family and i the truck turning stopped in time. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 ford freestar. while driving approximately 35-40 mph, the vehicle began to hesitate and the instrumental panel lighting flashed. the vehicle shut off a few minutes later and was towed to the dealer. the dealer stated that water penetrated through the windshield wiper motor area and caused the main computerized system to fail. the instrument panel had to be replaced, the gas line had to be blown out, and the spark plugs were replaced. the insurance company investigation concluded that the failure was due to a product defect. the manufacturer acknowledged receiving the contact's written complaint; however, they would not assist with the $1,200 repair cost that the contact had to pay. the failure mileage was 58,502.

Mrs. attee was starting our ford freestar, when she heard a clicking noise and noticed what she thought was smoke coming from the hood. she(mrs. attee) then opened the hood to find a small flame coming from the engine, she proceed to call the fire department. within 5 minutes the van 's engine was engulfed in flames. when the fire department arrived it was to late, the fire had already done its damage(totaled). *tr

While driving my ford freestar the engine started to miss. after a short distance it died completely. luckily, i was on a side road and able to pull to the side out of the traffic. the problem was the result of a manufacturing defect allowing water to leak into the engine compartment and then into the pcm destroying it. at 29,000 miles the pcm had to be replaced without any payment by ford. *tr

Bought van in june 2007 nothing but problems since. replaced battery within 2 months of purchase. replace o2 sensors 3 times and need done again. replaced transmission, radiator, egr valve, brakes 4 times, tie rod 2 times, calibers 2 times, rotors 3 times, fuel line, you name it, we have had to fix it. nothing but problems. we have spent close to 8k since feb 2008 on this vehicle and we can not get ford to help us at all. now the axles need replaced as well as sensors again. the dvd player quit working after 4 months, driver side heated seats quit working after 4 months. back passenger door sometimes won't open or unlock and sometimes it won't close when you try to close it. this vehicle has put my family in serious harm and we almost got into major accident do to most of the issues ie transmission stalled on interstate and had no warning at all. worst vehicle of all times. i can not trade in becasue i owe over 11k on this piece of crap. ford needs to refund me all of my money and suffering as well. i have thought about suing them for damages and selling this crap to us especially with 3 small children and having to travel to see family due to husband being a marine and always being deployed. almost missed seeing my grandpa for the last time before he did back in sept because of the transmission. this vehicle needs to be off of the roads forever. all of them. everyone that we know that has these vehicles have the same problems as us.

After a day of family festivities, 2 1/2 hours away from home, i packed my husband, two daughters, son-in-law , granddaughter and myself into my 2004 ford freestar van. i was driving down a very rural two lane road, in total darkness when it started. i was leaving a very very small town and accelerated from 30 to 55. everything was fine until i reached 62 mph. the van seemed to misfire and lunged. everyone asked was it was. i had let off the gas a bit and tried not to go over 60. as we continued, the van lunged again, but now i was only going 55, and then again and again, going slower and slower. my husband assumed i had a problem with the gasoline and told me to blow it out but i told him when i pushed on the gas, there was no response. the check engine light went on and then it got bad. i could see headlights coming up in my rear view mirror. i thought about pulling off to the side, but as the van started to loose power, i realized that there was no shoulder and that there was a ravine. i was pumping the gas pedal and the van would intermittently respond by lunging forward and then pausing, just like a bucking bronco. the movement was so thrusting it woke up my granddaughter from a sound sleep. i managed to put my flashers on but i couldn't get off the road. i realized that i needed to make it to the next town, as being stranded in that area would be very dangerous for anyone getting out of the vehicle or anyone being left behind in the vehicle. i am amazed that no one got killed because the van would totally loose power and shut off. i was dropping to neutral to restart it, only to have the same thing happen again, pumping the gas, making it a little way and then the engine losing power. this happened four or five times until i made it into the next town, where i drove down hill with no engine, steering or brakes, and coasted into a gas station. it would not go into reverse and was left 2 hours from home, awaiting arrangements to picked up. *tr
