When the vehicle is wet the system seems to short circuit itself. it causes it to shimmy and shake and it wont accelerate. we noticed it several times and took it in where we were told it was the camshaft sensor but after having it replaced twice it is still having the issue. the check engine light is contiguously on and it blinks erratically when ever any water is present. i've been told the sensor can go faulty do to a coil issue allowing water to leak on things it shouldn't.

Afterparking van nose in,attempted to reverse with no response from vehicle after multiple attempts to back up was finally able to reverse very slowly with minimal power. when placed in drive took several attempts at acceleration to move forward.transmission fluid checked by myself and advance auto parts employee and found to be at proper fluid level.drove vehicle 30 miles when it cut off completely, was able to get vehicle to side of road(it was raining heavily and foggy as well). was again able to get van going and made it another 15 miles before it cut off on me again and was again difficult to take off and required once again multiple attempts to get it moving.finally made it another 5 miles home and parked vehicle. had received notice 2 months earlier from ford re a recall related to torque converter. mechanic at magic city ford in roanoke,va. said problem with my transmission had nothing to do with torgue converter without driving or working on vehicle.

The pcm internal computer is crashed and cause the veh to run poorly and not start, drained batter, etc - this is an issue with a lot of 2004 freestars as i read online and was told to submit the info so that maybe they will do a recall and get this fixed. thank god it did not happen while driving.

During sts tire servicing, mechanic showed me a large section of structural steel hanging from the rear driver side wheel well and a michelin tire that contained abrasive ripping caused by the section of steel that had been dangling and rubbing against the tire. the large section of steel contained an anchor at the center which was manufactured to hold the third row row in place. this steel plate with the anchor for holding the third row seat in place is no longer attached to the vehicle due to a manufacturing defect which allowed the welds holding it in place to fail creating dangers of: unsecured seating, hole exposing passengers to exterior of vehicle and moving parts, opening for rodents or other dangers to enter vehicle, knowledge of prior may cause fear and panic of driver or passengers which may cause accident or mental anguise. i brought the vehicle to smith ford dealership in washington, n.j. requesting an inspection and warranty repair of the above stated structural steel. smith ford inspected the vehicle and said that the manufacturing defect would not be repaired by ford and that ford does not accept financial responsibility even though the problem was the result of a manufacturing defect. reported this to ford headquarters on november 30, 2012 and was informed that the dealership was correct in stating that ford will not repair this serious problem. my wife is increasingly having terrifying visions of mice jumping on her while driving, havings snakes crawling into the car, rain snow mud etc entering vehicle, or having the children put their hands or other things into the hole in the vehicle.

Vehicle shut off going down the road at slow speed after making loud squeeky sound. this has happened on many occasions since then and today 11/01/2012 it became more severe. my wife attempted to go to the local ford dealership around august/september describing the problem and was told that since the vehicle was not currently experiencing the problems described that there was nothing they were able to do. the vehicle is very unsafe and i have called the ford hotline because of the recall, the voice claims that the vehicle is still safe because the steering remains functional, this is not the case for my vehicle. after, one of the many incidents, often the van will lose complete power and the power steering will disengage and the steering wheel becomes very difficult to turn even for a large male. we bought the van as a family vehicle, as most do, which makes it even more problematic and disturbing. i am disgusted with ford for their negligence.

The car was driving fine all of a sudden the freestar lost power, i was doing t most 40 mph because it was during rush hour on the i15 hwy by hesperia everything was fine and all of a sudden my car lost power and began to feel like it was loosing power and then i saw it go from forty to slower mpg and i had my foot on the accelerator i immediately pulled over as soon as i could and there was smoke and then there was fire my 1car was burnt a total loss my daughter and i barely escaped with our lives minutes before the van exploded someone had put us in her car and drove us forward saving our lives when the fire department arrived i walked back to my car and the fire had expanded far past where me and my daughter were standing. my daughter is still traumatized by the experience and so am i. we would of been severely burnt or died when the car exploded and everything caught on fire past the spot my daughter and i were standing the firemen could not believe that the fire had been so extensive. we lost everything my daughter loved, all her most precious material things we went from driving on a happy trip to the realization we could of died by the fire. if the passerby would not had put us in her car and drove us to safety.

Every single time gas is being pumped into the car the pump stops several times. it can take up to 20 minutes to completely fill the gas tank. not only does it just stop, it frequently spits gas back out. the gas, which is a chemical, has given at least 2 people chemical burns on multiple occasions. ford has been contacted and while this is a known issue, they refuse to replace and/or repair unless i pay for it out of my pocket. this is a manufacturing defect, it happens often enough to be a known issue, it is dangerous in many different ways and i believe that this should most definitely be a recall due to the chemical burns that have already happened. also the potential devastation that could happen if someone at a gas station throws a still burning cigarette butt down and it lands in the remains of the gas that has been spit back out and onto the ground. although no smoking signs are posted, i have seen hundreds of people still smoking while pumping gas.

I was rotating my tires and noticed that inside each rear wheel well there was a panel patched in from the factory that was rusting terribly, with the drivers side being much worse and almost completely falling off the body. with some further investigation i discovered that the panel actually holds the anchors for the rearmost folding seat. as i stated, the drivers side is almost rusted off the car and there is a giant hole that is letting water and snow inside the van and ruining the carpet and padding. i frequently carry multiple children, some in child safety seats, and could not imagine what would happen during a collision if the rear seat anchor were to separate from the van. i seriously hope that there is some kind of recall, as this vehicle is not yet 10 years old and the rest of the body is still in great shape. this is not just a surface rust issue, it is a safety hazard to anyone owning this type of van and the manufacturer should be held responsible for fixing it as i'm sure the repair is not easy or cheap.

As i was taking off from a red light, i noticed that my car would not accelerate. i pulled to the side of the road and tried changing gears but it still would not go. took it to the local ford dealership and they changed out the torque converter. six months later on july 14th, it starts doing the same thing but i still had first gear. took it back to ford and they said that it was the transmission this time. come to find out when they changed the part they did not change the filter, fluid, or blow out the lines. they will not take responsibility for their actions on this. i will never buy another ford or use the ford place for repairs.

I was stopped at a red light. i then proceded to cross the intersection when the light turned green and my van just stopped without any warning. had it towed and was told i needed a new transmission and torque converter.

Traveling in town on fathers day with 8 yr old son and 8 month old daughter , lost forward power traveling at 30 mph , almost caused accident. finally made it to side of road, could not get forward/reverse power . had to have it towed.

I was driving my ford freestar on a highway at 65mph. all of a sudden it lost power and made an odd noise. drove as best i could to an exit. stopped and it would not go forward or backward. luckily there was no accident as i lost power. towed to local ford dealer. they replaced torque converter, but said they could not get it in 4th gear. the van had been running fine previously.ford covered cost of converter only. received call that the transmission was shot and it must have been going bad. i questioned that there were not previous problems and have always had it serviced every 3000 miles. even had the transmission fluid replaced last year. previous problems with air conditioning compressor. that was over 1000 dollars and now the latest is over 1800 dollars. we get the vehicle serviced regularly to prevent expensive repairs, but obviously this must not be of any help. very unhappy with treatment by service dealer and ford (they hung up on me). it is possible that it may have coincidental, but not thoroughly convinced. it should have been running poorly if that was the case. i believe they should have split the difference in the cost since they did not previously find a problem.

I left work, got 3 parking spots away, lost steering, brakes and gas. engine was still running. transaxle light came on, shut off van, tried again and it drove maybe a few feet and it was as if it was in neutral. engine light, battery light and oil light came on. shut it down tried again, drove about 10 feet and it died. had it towed to vip who had no answers, towed to ford who said it there was water in the pcm. they dried it out and said give it a go. got it home drove it one day and the next(after raining) it would not move out of driveway. it would go into gear but hitting the gas was again like in neutral. it would move maybe a few inches and then no longer. the engine light came back on and the van bucked some. towed to ford again and they said it is definatly water getting in the pcm. i have been searching online and i see many people complaining about this issue. i am worried because there is another recall coming in a month or so for the torque converter and i have 2 small children that rely on that van. i can't trade it in cause they are only will to give us $1000 when we owe 6. we are without vehicle again, with my husband and i having jobs and two kids. i feel unsafe in my van, even if we are to get it fixed, we have to hope the torque converter does not go while we are driving before the recall.

 1) we now have transmission failure. the cost to repair equals most of the vehicle's value. 2) driver-side passenger door closes and opens again continually. we get out and do that manually. 3) with foot off accelerator, going down hills, the freestar transmission has chugged for a couple of years now, reproduce-able at dealer last year but they could not find cause (we ran out of money letting them study it).... we now know these things are all related. research online shows other owners have found wet pcm to be promulgating cause for door sensors and the cause for premature failure of transmission due to damage caused by pcm over time. to put pcm below windshield, without proper waterproof housing, this is a design error that causes very, very expensive damage and repairs that will be required again, without pcm being touched. dealers repair damage (not cause) under warranty, but most of us are now out of warranty. we've only got 74000 very well-cared for miles. problem is the vehicle is now not driveable; transmission is shot. ford refuses to make good for us. the schedule recall for the trans axle will be our next repair, but it won't replace the transmission! see: http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.f0fb94a!make=ford&model=freestar&ed_makeindex=.f0fb94a

Trying to pass someone on the expressway and it started to stall. even since then van has been having a stalling type of issue. just is past sunday suddenly stop in the middle of traffic and had to wait a while to get the van to move. as to the return home mrs.lomeli almost crashed thru the garage because it stop moving, as she hit the accelerator which it appear to grasp gear cause traumatic street. as we tried to look for a trouble shooting solution we ran into your website about the recall. we contacted ford about it and the service department said there is no recall and can not fix until the letters are received from to us from ford. they said that we have to pay for the repairs cost and when the recall letter is out they can refund our money back. also note we purchase the van in 2004 and we have not received any recalls. the strange part is that when we provide the vin, they did not made us aware of this. 2004 ford truck freestar 2wd 3.9l sfi 6cyl estimated mileage: 96066 name: lomeli color: tan vin: 2fmza57634bb17244 nhtsa campaign id number: 03v457000 nhtsa campaign id number: 04v446000 nhtsa campaign id number: 06e056000 nhtsa campaign id number: 12v006000 nhtsa campaign id number: 12v006000 please advise

Transmission failed going down interstate at 65 mph.
10/21/2011119494
It started with my driver side window working erratically. simultaneously, the buttons on my radio quit working, although it randomly kept trying to reprogram preset 2. without warning, at 65mph on a busy road, i abruptly lost power and could not maintain speed or accelerate. i also experienced erratic rpm. currently vehicle will chronically not start due to power failure, even though battery and alternator have been checked and are functioning properly. the sudden and unexpected loss of acceleration and erratic rpm is dangerous. i am unable to drive this vehicle because i fear for my safety.

I have a 2004 ford freestar. i was on my way to the store with my 2 young sons. i stopped at the stop sign and when i went to turn, i lost any power that i had, without any warning my transmission went. i didn't have 1st, 3rd or reverse, i had to get my van towed home arrange for a ride. this is very dangerous and needs to be taken care of. now my van is in the shop and $2000.00 later hopefully i can get a year out of this.

 Transmission went out.
09/02/201186211
Transmission went out while driving. thankfully we were not on the highway. no grinding or slipping, the engine just revved and would vehicle would not move. had 3 children in the car at the time. very dangerous to trust this car. got the car to a parking lot, now it has been towed to a mechanic to be checked out. we previously had problems with something in the ignition or something where the car would just sputter and die while driving. replaced driver side window motor, but passenger side does not work either. please get these off the road!

My 2004 ford freestar engine light and other lights came on, and the minivan started to stall, each time i would have to restart and drive with hazards on trying to get home, it became dangerous and had to take my chance and pull off the road into a business driveway, and leave the van. the brakes would not work, they stiffened up as did the steering wheel. i was lucky i wasnt in an accident as it started out of the blue. it had been sitting in my driveway for two days and the weather had been rainy for those two days, and i think it was caused due to some water leakage into the transmission area. i had a similar issue a few years ago and took it to the ford dealer where i bought the van and they said it was a water getting into the system and they fixed the problem at the time. now i am being told that i have to have it put onto a machine and pay 85 dollars to have it checked out. i know this is an issue with these minivans and i don't feel i should have to fork out a lot of money to get it fixed when it is a problem with the model, and ford should do something about it. it is a safety issue and one day someone will get hurt or worse from this. someone needs to issue a recall so that these concerns are dealt with!!!

A few months ago my check engine light came on and vehicle felt like it wanted to stall out, the computer at the shop said that there was a misfire, replaced spark plugs and wires, light went out, 2 days later light back on same thing, shop could find nothing else wrong with the van, we then went to another shop who after having it for a week and not being able to figure out the problem said it was an oxygen sensor, paid $460 to have this replaced, van ran great for 3 days then lght back on and same thing, within 2 days the light went back off, this happened on and off for months then finally 3 weeks ago while turning a corner, the van just died and lost power in the middle of an intersection, unable to go into reverse or anything was able to restart the van long enough to get out of intersection then it died again and was able to coast to side of road but was unable to put van in reverse, my normal mechanic could not figure out the problem the computer kept reading different error codes , he then took it to the local dealer, where they have now had it for 3 weeks and are unable to find anything wrong with it, they did admit that they have been having problems with the pcm getting wet but they cannot find anything wrong with it, it is now running, going into reverse and no check engine light (at this time). i was also told that this could lead to eventual transmission problems as well, so now i have to worry about driving it at all, because noone can fix it, so it will eventually do it again???

Driving down rural highway, sudden loss of drive ability to vehicle, vehicle coasted to stop on shoulder of highway. engine still had power. towed van to ford dealership, result of diagnosis and repair: torque converter failed causing severe damage to transmission and radiator. damage required new components to be installed.
04/16/2011113210
The vehicle experienced sudden loss of acceleration. the engine would rev when gas pedal pushed, but would not gain momentum. there were no warning signs, no check engine light, and no noises. none of the gears would work. the dealership said the bands inside the torque converter had shredded.

As we were on a family vacation crossing wisconsin on interstate 94 going 65 mph with the cruise control set, the car started t rev very high and we lost all power. the engine ran fine and we were able to brake and steer, but had no forward or backward gears. we had to interrupt our trip, have the state trooper give my wife and kids a ride to the next town, and have the care towed to the nearest ford dealership. it cost $1250 and took ten days to fix the torque converter which had also damaged the rod that goes to it. fortunately it did not melt the transmission )or so they told me).

While driving at 35 mph on a 4 lane road vehicle suddenly lost ability to accelerate vehicle gave no warning just stopped acceleration. was able to coast off roadway into parking lot. mechanic stated the torque converter was the cause

On sept 28, 2010 my 2004 ford freestar suddenly and with zero warning stopped 'pulling'. was in passing lane of 4 lane highway going 60mph and we barely avoided being run over and killed or seriously injured ( a less experienced driver would not have survived i am sure). ford certified garage later told us the torque converter had basically 'exploded' and transmission was ruined. repair quoted at $3961.82 cents. forced to purchase new vehicle as we were stranded 2 hours from home and could not justify spending that much for a $6,000. book value vehicle, plus would never trust replacement of transmission with same faulty system. recieved zero help from ford, and recieved zero trade in value on freestar. 89,030 miles on freestar plus i had installed all new brake system, new battery, 4 new tires, new fuel filter, new points, and a certified ford garage tune up in summer of 2010.

The torque converter went out when we were driving down the interstate in june 2008. we had the torque converter replaced, not under warranty, only to have the same thing happen again in june 2009. again we had the torque converter replaced, no longer under warranty. in sept 2010 the check transaxel light came on. after taking it to the ford dealership we have been told that it is the torque converter again & they can't explain why this keeps happening (3rd time in 26 months). their suggestion was to replace the transmission!
08/24/2010157516
Start vehicle, it dies. again i start it, rev. the engine and manage to keep it going so i pull out of driveway and it dies while i am driving. from the info. i gather it is the torque converter. the same problem happened to me 3 months ago and we thought it was solved. i am now reading this is common occurance. i contacted ford and they told me there have been no reports of such things happeneing. no programs created(ongoing complaints to address the problems) or recalls in reagrds to the transmission or torque. i have two kids and both times they were in the vehicle with me. i am thankful we weren't hurt. i cannot believe ford is not taking any ownership in this problem!!

About 6 mo. ago i saw a defect relative to my vehicle, however, the ford co. never sent me anything to bring my car in to correct the defect. why are they not required to inform the car owners of these defects and have them require owners to bring them in so the ford co. can do the repairs no charge?

Bought van in june 2007 nothing but problems since. replaced battery within 2 months of purchase. replace o2 sensors 3 times and need done again. replaced transmission, radiator, egr valve, brakes 4 times, tie rod 2 times, calibers 2 times, rotors 3 times, fuel line, you name it, we have had to fix it. nothing but problems. we have spent close to 8k since feb 2008 on this vehicle and we can not get ford to help us at all. now the axles need replaced as well as sensors again. the dvd player quit working after 4 months, driver side heated seats quit working after 4 months. back passenger door sometimes won't open or unlock and sometimes it won't close when you try to close it. this vehicle has put my family in serious harm and we almost got into major accident do to most of the issues ie transmission stalled on interstate and had no warning at all. worst vehicle of all times. i can not trade in becasue i owe over 11k on this piece of crap. ford needs to refund me all of my money and suffering as well. i have thought about suing them for damages and selling this crap to us especially with 3 small children and having to travel to see family due to husband being a marine and always being deployed. almost missed seeing my grandpa for the last time before he did back in sept because of the transmission. this vehicle needs to be off of the roads forever. all of them. everyone that we know that has these vehicles have the same problems as us.
