POWER TRAIN - AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - CONTROL MODULE (TCM, PCM)
PE10033FORD MOTOR COMPANY08/23/201007/15/2011Engine Stalling
The subject vehicles suffered from a design issue whereby water could run down onto the cowling under the hood and located in the area of the windshield wipers and then drip onto a computer module, the powertrain control module (pcm), which could be manifested in a variety of symptoms depending on which part of the circuit board became wet or which of the connector pins shorted out.in addition to causing an engine to stall, which may or may not then restart, the water intrusion could also cause the transmission to shift poorly, the vehicle to have erratic power, a malfunction indicator light to come on, or result in an inability to start the vehicle, an inability to shift the vehicle into either forward or reverse. also the problem could cause a higher than normal idle rpm in park, or for the radio to malfunction, or the interior lights to stay on.during this investigation odi was concerned with the effect of the engine stalling or a drastic and sudden loss of power either of which may create a safety risk.in reviewing the actual number of these types of incidents, collectively referred to here as engine stalls, the number was found to be below what would be considered a defect trend.for example, the number of engine stalls identified in ford's warranty claims for the model year (my) 2004 subject vehicles, the my with the most failures, was 200 out of population of 125,865, for a failure rate of 0.16%.the one crash recorded by a complainant to nhtsa, voq 10311522, alleged that the engine stalled, due to water intrusion into the pcm, while the road was turning causing her to go off the road and according to the police report the vehicle then hit an embankment and a tree stump. ford reported in their response that there were three alleged crashes but none of these were validated as being caused by a problem with water intrusion into the pcm causing a stall.accordingly this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist.the agency will continue to monitor complaints and other information relating to the alleged defect in the subject vehicles and take further action in the future if warranted.

My husband and 5 passangers were traveling home at night from my son's hockey game ( 2 hours away) when the car felt like it was sent into neutral. could not go forward or reverse. thankfully they were able to coast safely to a stop. they were stranded and had to flag down help. the torque converter was totally stripped out which resulted in a repair bill of $902.00. ( not to mention the cost of towing) i found out that the 2004 and 2005 freestar torque converters were on recall. why were the 2006 models not included in this? i was told they have the same transmission and such. i will be holding onto my receipt in hopes that we can be reimbursed for this major inconvenience and safety issue. this could have been a bad situation had they been on a freeway. i am hoping that ford will recognize that the 2006 models should be included on this recall. if not.... the next breakdown, accident, injury or death could be on your shoulders. sorry for the rant but i am frustrated!

I was traveling down the highway when my transmission completely quit working and my rpm's shot up to 5000. i coasted to the side of the road and the transmission would not engage. i had it towed to a local shop where i was referred to cottman transmission to get it evaluated. cottman transmission said the transmission was full of water and completely burned up. they said that these vans have a problem with water leaking through the wiper vents onto the top of the pcm and water entering into the transmission. upon more investigation i have found out that ford has even acknowledged the problem and still has not issued a recall. they have issued a recall on some of the 04 and 05's for torque converter issues that sound like the same problem with the 06's. something has to be done about this because i was traveling on a busy highway with my wife and kids and had the transmission locked up i could have caused a serious, possibly even fatal, wreck because of ford's failure to correct a problem that they know exists! thankyou. *tr

While driving at highway speed (75mph) the transmission failed, there was no warning and there were no previous problems with the transmission. the transmission has no forward or reverse gears leaving it essentially in neutral. this left the car without power or the ability to safely exit the highway in the middle of crowded traffic. except for the ability of other drivers to avoid our car this could have resulted in a catastrophic accident. *tr

At a grocery store parking lot, after turning into a parking spot i put the van into reverse to straighten it out, when i put back into drive, it didn't move, there was no engagement whatsoever of the gears. i had to push the vehicle into the spot out of the lane of traffic and have it towed. ironically this happened 3 days after i learned about ford recalling the freestar for 2005 models to replace torque converter; when the service center who towed my vehicle told me i needed a torque converter replacement i had them provide pictures of the part and can clearly see the part itself was a 2005 part! however ford is not taking responsibility because the year of my vehicle is 2006, it cost me over $1300 to repair. i notified customer service at ford on 8/31/12 to request a refund but so far nothing. *tr

I bought the vehicle in jan. 06, starter went 11 months later. van has never started up correctly. it doesn't run smoothly. runs rough when it rains. found info online regarding water leaking into the pcm which can create misfires, shift late, engine can run rough. i have taken it back to echelon ford several times. they still won't admit to it being a problem. couldn't find a code. however, now that i am out of warranty, they were able to find a code. ford are not backing up there product! there hundreds of complaints about these vehicles and nothing is being done! i have 1 year left to pay, and can't afford to make repairs that ford should be fixing since it started when i had the original warranty...why will ford not do something..? i have a wife who drives it with 4 kids. what are they waiting for, an accident...? what has to happen to get them to fix this problem on there vehicles. ford is saying it's miss firing in cylinder 3. probably because of all the water that has effected the pcm, and the ignition coil pack & ignition wires needs to be replaced, why would need to be replaced in a 5 year old vehicle... is that getting wet too...? i am extremely tired of dealing with this van. it's not fair to have a company not stand behind there product. i have had it! *tr

I was traveling at a steady speed of 40 mph when i experienced instant and total transmission failure. the engine remained running and all subsystems continued to function but there was no power applied to the wheels in any gear. after being towed to the nearest ford dealership (lindsay ford in wheaton, md) the service department said that i needed a new transmission for $4,000. i eventually had the transmission repaired at a local shop for a total cost to me of $2,600. i learned that i had the same transmission problem that seems to be common to the ford freestar: a broken pump shaft caused the torque converter teeth to break off. it is obvious that this is a serious design flaw that remains uncorrected. ford should be held accountable and made liable for all failures and repairs related to this issue. *tr

Vehicle started but when placed into drive or reverse nothing would happen even when the engine was revved. no warning, no noise, no previous indications at all that there was a problem. car was towed to ford dealership who informed me that the torque converter would need to be replaced as it was broken. thankfully my wife and kids had just pulled off the main highway for a fuel stop and were just going to continue their journey when the problem occurred. how can ford issue a recall for 2004 and 2005 freestar torque converters and not issue one for the 2006 when i'm sure that some 2006 models were actually made in 2005. *tr

Van was in motion on secondary roadway/county highway at approx 30mph. operator slowed vehicle for traffic and then attempted to continue on but received no response from the van. engine was operating and gear selector was in drive. the incident could be classed as near miss accident as other operators had to drive around the van which had come to a stop in the middle of road. ford diagnostics are that the torque converter has failed and has to be replaced. the symptoms and problem are the same as the 2004 & 2005 freestar torque converter recall. however, ford has not included the 2006 model year in the same recall.

*tr

I was driving approximately 45 mph on busy highway, my ford freestar would no longer accelerate. looking in the rear view mirror, there was smoke coming from my vehicle. the engine light came on after i noticed the smoke, then my thermostat went all the way from c to hot in a split second. no warning, car smoking and my brakes and gas was not working. i tried to pull over safely and get out of the vehicle quickly. my van was engulfed with smoke, an ambulance pulled over to assist me. the car fire was put out and towed to a ford dealer. it was my transmission that blew. it was covered by warranty and fixed. i was told it was a bad transmission. one year and two weeks later, my ford freestar was not shifting gears, i was getting stuck, in reverse. when i shift to drive, it does not go forward. my car had to be towed again to the same ford dealer. i was told my transmission was filled with water and the 1 year warranty i purchased the year before was shorted by two weeks. ford would not honor my warranty due to it being over by 2 weeks time frame. so, i then purchased another transmission with another warranty. now in 2012, a year later, my transmission that i purchased last year is doing the same thing, getting stuck in gears, when i accelerate, my freestar jumps. every time it rains, this car stalls. when i took to my mechanic, he says this is a horrible car. poorly made and it should have been recalled. apparently it stalls in the rain due to the sealing from ford? why and how is this possible? this vehicle is a horrible safety problem. i am fortunate my children were not with me in the first car fire. when is ford or the safety council going to investigate this car? so in my vehicle, ford thinks there is nothing wrong with their customer having to replace a transmission 3 years in a row. no safety warnings or engine light warnings at all. *tr

I was driving down a city street, stopped at a light, when it turned green i pushed on the pedal gently (someone was in front of me) and it made a huge jerk and clank clank clank. it then started to go. at this point it had the powertrain malfunction light on. i drove it to ford and the car wouldn't go into reverse at all and wouldn't drive with out jerking. it also wouldn't go back in neutral when the key was turned on. no warning, drove fine before this. *tr

I have filed a complaint before on this website about my frod freestar suddenly not moving. going up a ramp in the dark when car just stopped going forward. same complaint as many others here. i have emailed ford several times to find out if the 2006 will be recalled like the 04 and 05 models with the same exact problem. just kept getting the standard we aren't responsible answer. i called ford 2 days ago to verbally file a complaint. i was told that 1) rebuilt parts are better than new parts, so that's why i have a rebuilt transmission in my van now and 2) that ford won't respond about a recall unless they start getting phone calls from people with the same complaint. so do letters an emails about the problem not count? don't know if anyone is following the complaints on here but i thought i would share just in case. i paid $2600 to get a rebuilt transmission put in my car by ford and i really want my money back and faith once again in my vehicle.

Driving with my two young daughters in the vehicle. had just driven about 50 miles at 60 mph. luckily had just gotten off the highway when the vehicle felt like i had shifted into neutral. the engine sounded like it was revving but i had absolutely no power. it's now going to cost me $2500 for a new transmission. i wouldn't even give it a second thought if i hadn't just read that the 2004-5 freestars have been recalled because of transmission problems. i'm wondering why the 2006 wasn't included since i'm guessing the transmissions are identical. we were incredibally lucky since i had just gotten off the highway, but 5 minutes earlier would have been a different story.

Driving home on tollraod at night going up on ramp. van gave no warning, no lights, no issues. engine still on but van would not move. was able to roll back down ramp partway and get on to small houlder area. this ramp was curved and we were in a blind spot with a carfull of people and the cat. had to wait for hctra to tow us to a safe location, then had to wait another 2 hours for a tow truck. couls not get a rental from ford nor did we get any help replacing the transmission. $2600 later we have a erbulit transmission. i drive 2 hours to and from work. the van has all of its maintence done on time. ford has recalled the 04 nad o5 freestar for the same exact problem but will not acknowledge the issue with the 2006. very frustrating.

Recurrent intermittent problems with slipping transmission.problem has become increasingly worse.waiting for catastrophic failure with this known ford transmission problem.i will probably die, when this(transmission) fails and puts me in the path of a speeding vehicle;giving me no chance to get out of the way.a 6 year old vehicle should not have this problem.

I had just left home and turned out onto major highway - i was picking up speed and it was like i put my van into neutral - i just pulled off highway and it would not go into any gear. had to tow it and have it repaired. torque converter went out -- had to have transmission rebuilt. amcco rebuilt transmission and they told us it had a 2005 transmission in it. i feel like the 2006 ford freestars should be placed in the same recall as the 2004 and 2005 ford freestars as some were actually made in 2005.

Every time it rained, my engine would shudder, shake, sometimes knock, the transmission would shift for no good reason, and i stalled out in traffic once. the vehicle became non-drivable when it rained (and only when it rained). i took the vehicle to my ford dealer (schults ford of harmarville, pa), where technician pat sand indicated that this is a known problem with ford freestars, and said a ford service bulletin indicates that because of a manufacturing problem (incorrect sealer application to the pcm and poor position of pcm in relation to windshield run-off) water leakage into the program control module causes it to issue random commands and errors. they followed the ford bulletin and by simply better sealing against moisture / blocking the water flow, resolved the problem. this is a safety issue and a known manufacturing defect.

Yesterday while traveling on interstate 30, our 2006 ford freestar suddenly made a loud revving up noise with the rpms shooting up for a second and then i had no propulsion. the motor was running, but all i could do was coast as far as i could to get to the shoulder. my husband and three young children were with us, and it was very scary to lose power like that and then to sit on the shoulder being shaken by every big rig that came by. we had to be towed to the nearest ford dealership and rent a vehicle to drive the 100 miles home. once home last night, we found info about the same thing happening to many other freestars and that ford is voluntarily recalling '04 and '05 models to replace the torque converters. what about the '06 models this is happening to? we were amazed at the stories we found identical to ours. will the 2006 models be addressed as well? when i heard the automated message from ford concerning the '04 and '05 models and how this issue does not affect safety because a vehicle can be coasted to safety, i was appalled. i wonder if they have tried that in interstate traffic consisting to a large degree of 18-wheelers barreling downhill on you as you try to get past a bridge to the shoulder while carrying your husband and three kids! and then to sit there not able to move one way or the other while more 18-wheelers fly by, feeling relief each time they don't hit you, trying to decide if we'd all be safer standing in the ditch! didn't feel so safe to me!

While driving home from work on a rural single lane highway with no shoulder, my 2006 ford freestar mini-van completely lost acceleration. i was travelling 70 mph and going up a large hill when everything just shut down. there was absolutely no warning, no lights, nothing! when pushing the gas to the floor, the rpm's revved but i had no acceleration. i coasted to a stop at the top of the hill, trying to manuever the van off the road and out of the way of the 18 wheeler that was not far behind me. after trying repeatedly to get the transmission to engage, i had it towed to a ford dealership and was told the transmission needed to be replaced at a cost of over $3000. i had to take it back to this dealership twice to have them fix small things that they had not properly put back together. less than a year later, the powertrain warning light for the transmission came on and i had to take it back to a different ford dealership. i was told it was the transmission again, and because it was thankfully still under warranty i wasn't out any money, but i was without my primary vehicle for our family of 5 for almost two weeks. the transmission feels like it is starting to slip again, and i have taken it back to the dealership twice to have them look for the problem before it goes out, but i keep getting told it is nothing. when my husband rode with the mechanic to see if it would slip, the torque converter started shuddering, but the mechanic said, it's just the torque converter shuddering, don't worry about it. now i am reading that a faulty torque converter may lead to more transmission trouble, but i feel the ford dealership is just waiting for the warranty to go out again so they won't have to fix it yet again. this is the only vehicle we have tohat will transport our whole family, and i'm not sure how safe it is for me to continue to drive it.

While driving on the highway the torque converter would malfunction causing the vehicle to hesitate and make a rumbling sound. the right front wheel makes tapping sounds when turning to the right or left. the ford mechanic and my personal mechanic have said the torque converter, cv joints and drive shafts will have to be replaced, and that the transmission may have to be rebuilt or replaced. i purchased the van form ford in 2007. i am looking forward to hearing for the nhst board on these issues.

Bought the 2006 ford freestar on 9/14/11. 5 minutes after the purchase, i came to a light and the car lost all power. turned right around and went back to the dealership and assumed it was from sitting in the lot through a massive snow storm. in the 18 weeks that i have had the vehicle, it has been brought back to the shop 4 times totaling 12 full weeks. we have constant loss of power. we also experience a jerking/bucking which results in the engine light flashing and as soon as the car slows down enough, it will lose power. this usually happens right after rain. these problems have left me with a non mobile car in intersections. this is not safe at all and there should be a recall on this vehicle before someone ends up in a fatal crash.

On nov. 18, 2011 while on a trip of approximately 600 miles round trip this 2006 ford freestar shuddered a few times which was presumed to be rough road. on nov. 23 the van did not go into reverse. after a few tries it did slip into reverse. the following day nov. 24 the same thing happened. the van was in another town about 60 miles away, my daughter had borrowed it, so on dec.06, 2011 she took it to a ford dealership for diagnosis. the dealership gave me a paper stating the oss was bad. i picked up the van (after the ford dealership told me it could be driven home), and on the way home it started to jerk when changing gears while going up or down hills. the lights inside and out went out also. i took the van to a transmission shop and after they checked it over it was determined the transmission was bad. there was nothing wrong with the oss sensor. a washer had broken inside the transmission, the fluid was full of metal, bushings were worn, and gears needed replacing. i trust this transmission place totally and since i had experienced the reverse and gear jerk problems myself i felt this was the correct diagnosis. i had the transmission repaired. now, this may be reasonable for some 2006 vehicles which may had been driven hard, however.. this van had 56683 miles when taken to the dealership. this vehicle is used mostly for transportation for a disabled person. which makes it twice as frightening about the transmission. i keep thinking about the possibilities of breaking down miles away from home. when is it acceptable for a bought new, gently treated vehicle with 56683 miles on it have a bad transmission? even though it is 5 years old the mileage is not great. i cannot think what might have been if it had gone totally while on the road transporting a disabled person.

I have a 2006 ford freestar and it periodically decides to slam on the brakes on the freeway without my foot touching the brake pedal. the traction control light flashes and will not go faster than 25 mph. turned off traction control button and ran fine. turned traction control back on and the van slammed on the breaks again. had to pull over turn off motor and restart engine to make the van stop. this has happened on six occasions over a period of 4 years. rapid deceleration from cruising speed (65 mph) to 25mph with absolutely no operator control on the freeway and with children in the rear seat. this is a serious safety issue and must be investigated by the ntsb and remedied by ford. it's only a matter of time before there are deaths associated with this defect. this car has been in the dealer's shop for a fix on three occasions and the problem persists.

I was trying to get into a freeway from a ramp, but the vehicle will not speed up; the transmission just hesitated, instead, a wrench light came up on the instrument panel. i took it to a dealer and i was told that the transmission valve body and torque converter needed to be replaced (on a vehicle with just 42,604 miles)! it cost me $2,003.76. i read online that several owners were having similar transmission problems. i wrote to ford motor company customer relationship manager, but they failed to reimburse me for this apparent defect or even acknowledge the apparently widespread problem with their vehicle!

As i was driving my 2006 ford freestar on a busy highway, the vehicle acted as if it went into neurtal and i had to coast to the side of the road. the vehicle would not go into forward or revers gear at all - it was simply stuck on the side of the road.this van has only 69,000 miles on it and should not have such an issue at this point! i have had it towed to a mechanic who informs me that the torque converter and possibly more will need to be replaced leaving me out of pocket over $3,000.00. i have researched this problem and as i entered 2006 ford freestar into google search it seems that this is an ongoing problem that is happening with thousands of other vehicles of teh same year/make. why is this not a recall from ford? this is a very dangerous problem! i was traveling at a speed of 72mph in heavy traffic when this occurred and could have been killed! when will these people have to start doing something about the faulty vehicles being made and sold to the public???? i do not have the time or money to replace a transmission at 69,000 miles on a vehicle that obviously has a defect from the facotry!

I had just gotton of the interstate when my 2006 ford freestar would not drive. i coasted in a parking lot. this is a very busy street. the would not drive without any warning or any lights on the dash. the check engine light is still not on. i called a mechanic and he said that they just fix a van like mine and it was the torque converter and it will cost 975.00 to fix if this is the problem. this is the second ford mini van i have had the first one i had it for 3 days and it caught fire 3am this was a ford windstar. i had no compensation for it i even had to come up with an additional down payment because the insurance company only covered the value of the car not what i bought it for. ford will never get my business.

We had our 2006 ford freestar transmission replaced back in late 2009 due to water getting into the transmission. on feb 21, we brought it back in to find that our transmission has yet again got water in it!!! we are lucky that this falls under the power train warranty, but what is going to happen next year when we are bound to encounter this problem again. ford tells us that we will have to pay for it ourselves. this is bs seeing as this is a recurring problem that they have yet corrected. if you initiate a complaint about a vehicle during your warranty timeline and they cannot remedy the problem, even after the warranty is up, then it should be on ford to correct it. tell me, when do these motor companies have to take ownership for their short comings? when my ipod kept having issues, i did not have to keep paying to get the issue fixed, i received a brand new ipod!!! motor companies should have stricter rules to follow seeing as we are putting lives at stake.

I have a 2006 ford freestar and today it decided to slam on the brakes on the freeway without my foot touching the brake peddle. the traction control light began flashing and would not go faster than 25 mph. turned off traction control button and ran fine. turned traction control back on and the van slammed on the breaks again. had to pull over turn off motor and restart engine to make the van stop. google this problem and you will find it all over the internet a long with major transmission failures.

54,500 miles on a 2006 ford freestar. will not go forward or reverse.... dealer found the splines are gone on the pump in the torque convertor. after research finding that i am not the only person with this problem... thankfully vehicle failed on the highway instead of a busy street in our town.

A defective power train:automatic transmission:control module (tcm, pcm) on the ford freestar van actually causes a spark plug to misfire and eventaully starts to melt. this has happened on my vehicle three or four times. my car bucks and misfires almost causing an accident as i was entering hiighway.

2006 ford freestar approximately 81,000 miles/ before the incident: i drove about 30 miles on the highway and was driving on a side road going about 25 mph up a steep hill. as i was driving the transmission dropped out of drive. i didn't have reverse only park. had to push the van into a driveway. i had it towed to the local ford dealer and was told that the front pump has no pressure at all/internal failure either front pump and or forward clutch packs. overhaul of unit not a practical repair. fluid was full but very dirty and has some metal fragments. the transmission was replaced with a ford reman unit. total cost was $3361.46. *tr

Torque converter went on my 06 freestar when in traffic on highway. this forced me to pull on the passing lane median side of the highway potentially putting me in danger of passing big-rigs and other vehicles. thank the lord a state policeman came to block traffic. i read up on this and see its being investigated. this was not an inexpensive fix. i hope ford reimburses me for not re-engineering their problem and letting it continue without a recall. *tr

Ford freestar 2006 transmission died on highway this morning while highway driving this morning my ford freestar would not accelerate, engine continued running.... my husband was driving 40 mph and suddenly he had no acceleration, engine continued running, when he pushed on the gas pedal the engine just reved. he coasted to a stop, and couldn't get the car off of the road. we had the car towed. this was an extremely dangerous situation. we were told at this point, it is the transmission, we never had any indication that there was a problem, this problem happened suddenly. please look into this dangerous situation! our van only 63,000 mile on it! it has been brought to our attention that there are thousands of ford mini van owners that have had the identical problem with their ford van's. please force ford to issue a recall these transmissions!!!!! at this point, we are going to have to pay what we owe on this van ie..... van payments to the bank......and we don't have the money to pay for a new transmission!!!!! please help us and other's who transmissions have failed. as i see it this problem is going to get worse....ie...van transmissions that haven't failed yet!!! please contact us at your earliest conveniece. thank you and we look forward to hearing back from you. *tr

While driving down hwy. 163 near monument valley, ut. and then just into az., i was pulling over @ diff. turn-out for picture taking. i pulled out of one, maneuvered back onto hwy. a short bit when i realized the 2006 ford freestar i ws driving was going nowhere, just rolling frm own weight. i pulled over to side, still too close to traffic, and stopped and re-started it to see if it would re-engage the gears. no, only engine revving. i was out there for many hrs. with no phone signa. finally someone went and got mechanic brother to come out with his pick-up truck, chains, and trailer with ramps. next day it was taken by tow truck to ford of page, az. they want $3700 for whole transmission. they do not know of this pending procedure for safety re-call, but will call ford on mon. also told him my van is my home, i am over the road transporter, and would have to camp out in dealer-ship lot indefinitely. the ptice is now $3000. the vehicle has approx. 73,000 miles on it. *tr

On the rainy evening of march 10, 2009, the transmission on my 2006 ford freestar with only 45,000 miles completely stopped running. i had just made a right turn onto an unlit residential street when my car just stopped moving. i was pushing the gas and hearing the engine change but with my car in d there was no motion. with the vehicle still running, i tried the other movement gears with no reaction. my car had just completely stopped on the road with no warning! thank goodness that was not a lot of traffic that night. had the vehicle towed to the ford dealership where it was purchased and the transmission was repaired by replacing the torque converter and whatever other work was required to get it working. they only gave me a 1 yr/12,000 mile warranty, which is just scary. it was in the shop for just over a week. have noticed that it now seems to occasionally hesitate while i am driving it. *tr

The spines in the transmission torque converter fail because they were not hardened . when this happens the vehicle stops and can not move. this is very dangerous , and at some point ( if it hasn't already) will cause an accident, and possible death. *tr

On 7-22-08 myself, sister and kids were driving and pulled through the mcdonald's drive through for a drink then when i pulled out onto hwy 31 in corsicana to get back on interstate 45 my 2006 freestar with 52205 miles would not go. it was like the car was in neutral. lucky the road went down hill a little and could get to the center lane. i then saw a ford dealer behind me and got the van their because they towed me after a $95 digno fee they told me it was my plantiey gears and need a whole new transmission for $3200 two days later the price jumped to $4200 so i did not get my van fixed yet and towed it home. when i call ford they said they can not do anything until i take my van to my dealer in town and pay another diogn, fee. then call them. *tr

Transmission in 2004 ford freestar slipped and then failed in a very short period. the repair shop stated it seemed like a factory defect for such a young transmission to fail. *jb

I was standing at the rear of my sister's new 2006 ford freestar van. my 2 1/2 year old son was inside the van. the van was not running. my son climbed over the front seat from the back seat and pulled down on the shifter lever causing the vehicle to come out of gear and roll backward out of a graded driveway. the van struck my right leg and right elbow causing minor injuries. after getting the vehicle stopped i needed to know why the vehicle came out of gear, as this could've been a small child behind this vehicle instead of myself, the results of which would've been catastrophic. during my investigation of this circumstance; while i had assumed that you had to depress the brake pedal in order to release the shifter lever, i instead discovered the following: -- 1. if the vehicle is running and in park, you must depress the brake pedal to release the safety feature which prevents the shifter from coming out of gear. -- 2. if the vehicle is not running, you only have to turn the key one notch to release the safety feature which prevents the shifter from coming out of gear. you do not have to depress the brake pedal at all !!! i have since questioned many others to see if the same is true, and was shocked to discover that this is not the only vehicle in which this occurs. this is a very serious defect that the public isn't routinely aware of, and one that could potentially kill someone under similar circumstances. i have come to the conclusion that this supposed safety feature poses a false sense of security, as i have believed for many years that this safety feature prevented accidental shifter actuation. please look into this or make it known to the public about what could occur under similar (and all too common) circumstances. thank you for your time and attention to this very valid concern. i look forward to seeing a published warning, or perhaps even a global recall, that addresses this potential danger in the very near future. *jb

2006 ford freestar failed to move forward in gear while driving on busy road. this occurred two different times. most recent instance saw me and my 4 year old daughter placed in peril. i have had transmission replaced only to find that problems may be the result of the pcm failing as a result of getting wet due to a faulty seal on the box that houses the pcm. most recent incident nearly resulted in our nearly being rear ended by a semit tractor trailer at 50 mph. fortunately, i had the presence of mind to shift to neutral, restart van and coast off road just ahead of truck. van stalled and would not run. had to leave at garage out of town and get a ride home for my and my 4 year old daughter.
