ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

I've had problems with this vehicle numerous times over the past few years. i filed a complaint on here once but do not remember the dates or the username/password i used. this vehicle is the worst car i have ever owned. i've sunk thousands into repairs in the last couple of years. i've had instrument cluster replaced 4 times, replaced engine mounts, my a/c compressor went out on it, throttle body replaced. and now it sits on blocks we thought was the fuel pump went out so replaced it. didn't do any good. not sure what it is the instrument cluster still doesn't work correctly, it was surging til the day the other day when it just wont go anymore, it will start and run but won't go. i was told it could be numerous things, throttle body again, instrument cluster still not right, might be my transmission, could be my pedal throttle sensor, fuel switch out..........so what do i do nickel and penny everything i have into a lemon that obviously the nhtsa nor ford care about. i'm a single mother with two children, we live 7 miles from town...and now i have no transportation. i bought this vehicle in 2005 and paid quite a bit for it. its like toilet paper or diapers....disposable! i will never purchase a ford again. *tr

When at a stop, our car lunges when you press on the gas pedal, forward or reverse. there is a hesitation after pushing on the pedal than it leaps forward or reverse. i was told from a dealer that it needed the throttle body cleaned and was told the same from a transmission shop. the transmission shop informed me of some problems ford was having with this transmission. i looked it up on line and seen many complaints. i cleaned it and it seemed to fix the problem. a couple of months ago, it started the lunging again. this morning, the car shuttered and stopped and several lights on the dash lit up, wrench, motor. the car wouldn't move, it wouldn't even rev up. it stranded my wife on the side of the road. i came to meet her and had it towed to our house. i cleaned the throttle body again. when i got in to try it, all the lights were no longer there but it still lunges. very afraid to let my wife drive it again with the possibility of being stranded.

Many times when i put the car in gear, whether it's forward or reverse, the car surges. i have almost gotten into accidents because of it. stepping on the brakes helps but doesn't completely stop the initial surge.

Car lunges when coming to a stop and sometimes even after you have stopped, it lunges forward or back such as when trying to park or reverse from parking. the lunging starts happen when it is hot outside, summer months, and always if the air conditioner is on. the lunging started off small in the beginning, now its at a point that it stalls my car. i have almost run into someone while i was backing up because the car lunged even with my foot on the break. i feel incredibly unsafe driving in the summer months, i am afraid to turn on the air conditioner, because the lunging happens emmediatly. lunging has increased from 2009 to present.

Scary car. a couple of times when car is idle/foot on brake the car would surge forward on its own. this is creepy. first time happened when parking in front of a wall. luckily, i had enough room to not hit the front. i just came home and rolled into parking space. my foot was still on the brake but out of nowhere it just went by itself so my natural response was to brake really hard. it slowed the surging, but dang it! it scared the begezzy out of me. if i wasn't alert, i think that wall would damage the front car...let alone hit someone(s) if they are in front of this idle car. second time when my husband rolled into the mall's parking space and it did it too. i sat next to him and it was just freaky weird. it happened 3 other times also. ford better recall on this problem seeing how many complaints are posted online already. i had to look it up online and found a major car magazine stated it was a major problem. if they don't do anything about this, i think i will have to switch to another car maker. this ford freestyle 2005 awd limited is a scary car.

When stopped or moving slow to make a turn the engine accelerates on its own , this happens going forwards or in reverse and happens more with the ac turned on.
04/02/200890000
In 2008 my ford freestyle started lunging forward at very low speeds when in gear without either the brake or accelerator pedal applied. if i applied the brakes, it stopped the car right away, but if i was sitting with the vehicle in drive or reverse and didn't have my foot on the brake pedal, the vehicle would suddenly lunge - and the only way to stop it was to slam on the brakes. i am just luckily we never hit anyone. it seemed to happen after it rained. a local (non ford) mechanic stated that he believed the ecm was getting wet and corrosion was causing this problem. after he addressed the problem (he cleaned and tightened pins, sealed with terminal sealer/corrosion inhibitor), the problem completely stopped. now, 4 years later, it's doing it again. but that mechanic is no longer in business and i am worried that this is a chronic (and scary) problem that needs to be addressed. this morning my vehicle lunged suddenly backwards out of my driveway, right into the sidewalk where children were passing. i had stopped my car, let up the brake and it lunged. no one was hurt but i no longer feel comfortable driving it. i hope that you can investigate this problem and provide me with an update (and a solution!). we love the vehicle otherwise.

Chronic problem, increasing frequency, cant remember when it all started was infrequent 1-2x/year and usually on hot days, maybe when it was 1 year old. has gradually increased in frequency happening now in spurts with no rhyme nor reason. when accelerating from a stop, or drive from reverse car will choke and stall. seems to be worse in hot weather, but has also occurred in very cold. check engine lights up in limp home mode but then corrects when shut engine off for awhile, but the light does not come on every time nothing shows on computer when check engine light is on either. no codes show, mechanic is certified and a family friend, he kept the car; it acted up only once and his computer said throttle body sensor - it was replaced, but the problem persists. he has done all he can but can't find the problem. in searching the internet i have seen this is a chronic problem with the freestyle. i wont let my kids drive it for fear their lack of experience and quick thinking at the wheel could get them killed as it has happened pulling out at intersections. i found this site through the edmonds recall information site: please institute an investigation to get a recall on whatever is going on. i love this car, it now has 225000 miles and that is the only problem, i cant afford a replacement, but i cant afford to die either.

I have more than one complaint. 1) shortly after buying my used 2005 freestyle i would be driving both at higher and lower speeds and i would loose all control of the vehicle. it would not respond to gas or steering. it was like it was loseing power but it was still running. i had several near misses when this would happen. i was lucky that when i bought my freestyle it was certified and under warranty, otherwise the repairs would have cost me over $1200. my ford dealer replaced the kind of sensor/brain as they called it. has been working sence. 2) air compressor needs to be replaced now. i thought the a/c wasn't blowing cold enough, i finally told it to a repair shop i trust and he said he couldn't understand i i had any cool air at all. 3) brakes, rear most of all, have been replaced several times. way too soon and anytime it's wet they sceal like crazy. gues i need to have them changed again. 4) transmission issues are starting now. i roughly have 90k miles and hoped this would be my last car for several more years. i hate to trade it in and start another car payment and let this car get back out to some other unsuspecting soul.

While stationary in my 2005 ford freestyle in the left turn lane at a red light, the engine suddenly accelerated moving the car forward approximately five feet into the intersection before it could be stopped. at the time of this occurrence, my foot was already on the brake and only by stomping harder on the brakes was i able to stop the car's forward travel into cross traffic that was traveling at over 40mph. the car then died and a warning came up on the information display on the dash panel stating engine failsafe mode. i turned off the ignition and tried to start the car again. the car started, but still displayed the engine failsafe mode warning and when we were attempting to return home, the vehicle would not shift out of first gear or allow us to accelerate over 30mph. this incident took place at 9:35pm on january the 20th 2012. it was raining and the ac heat was on.

Throttle body is giving me trouble. when i am at a light or stopped my car accelerates by itself. is a safety issue as sometimes i am at a pedestrian crosswalk or just at a light. very concerned about this issue.
06/06/201150000
Purchased used ford freestyle december 2010. ran fine until warm weather and use of air conditioner. with a/c on, the electronic throttle control seems to often greatly overshoot the correct setting when shifting from neutral to drive or reverse, which causes a significant engine rpm increase and a momentary lunge if the brake is not applied very firmly. many vehicles do this to a minor extent but the freestyle is far and away the worst i've ever seen. this does cause unanticipated vehicle movement and could injure a child, passerby etc or cause a vehicle to enter an intersection. my wife is certainly unnnerved by it. effect is in fact sometimes there in cool weather but to a much lesser extent. reading forums and thinking about this (i'm an engineer and sae member) it may very well be something like a worn throttle position sensor interacting with an ecu software glitch, may very well be fixable in software. annoyingly the tps on this vehicle is integrated into the throttle body or i'd just replace the tps.

Tl- the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated that when reversing the vehicle would lunge backward. the contact would have to depress the brake abruptly in order for the vehicle to come to a complete stop. in addition, the awd warning light was illuminated. the vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who diagnosed the failure as a sensor defect. the vehicle was not repaired. neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of failure. the failure mileage was unavailable and the current mileage was 75,000. kmj

We have experienced numerous problems with our freestyle, and at this point are faced with a failed throttle body, which will cost $900 to replace (dealer quote). searching the internet reveals that this is a very common, known problem with the freestyle, and its sister cars (the 500 & sable) all build by ford with the same engine. the problem causes the vehicle to lurch while at idle, to perhaps 5-10 mph, endangering anyone in the vehicle's path (ie, pedestrians, cars ahead in a drive-thru lane, etc.) ford has produced several successive variants of the throttle body, indicating the newer ones do not have the fatal design flaw that plagues the original. why am i forced to purchase a replacement for an obviously (at this point) badly designed product? these cars should be recalled, and we should be reimbursed for the expense.

Throttle body problem, car doesn't start. when it does start black, smelly spoke comes out of the tail pipe. issue started around march brought to garage said it was in need of a tune up. had that done $400 car still did they same thing not starting. worked fine for awhile. again the cold weather hit. not starting again. brought car in again. took 5 days to figure out the issue. $600 part plus labor $500 plus rental for 5 days $400. after reading several complaint on the same issue i am very surprised this hasn't been taken care of already. this part should be recalled and ford should refund all costs associated with it.

I purchase my 2005 ford freestyle in june 2005. july 2005 traveling to georgia between 55/60 mph, the check engine light and transmission icon appeared. upon trying to accelerate, i could not move no more than 30-40 mph with the rpm's racing. i had to pull over and let the car rest approximately 15-20 minutes. upon starting the car and putting into drive gear it was very hard and lunged. the car sounds like you're racing the engine with the vehicle in park. the frequency of the engine/transmission light with trying to accelerate and can not is a persisent issue. it also lunges when the air conditioner is turned on. once the car is shut off and started again, while your foot is on the brake which has to be with more pressure than usual to control the lunge. sitting in traffic with the air on with cars ahead of you is frightning since it will lunge then also. this has been an ongoing issue since the purchase of this vehicle. i've also had the brakes repaired more than normal. since acquiring this car. recently, i've gotten the brakes done in february, may and currently need another repair with all the squealing.

At slow speeds, at various times, there are unintended surges in speed. they are usually more common when the air conditioning is in use. the may occur when in forward or reverse. my local dealer advised that ford was looking into the problem, but i have nothing definite about what the problem is and whether or not ford will pay for any repairs. i have since learned that the problem is quite common and is being investigated. i do not recall filing a formal complaint before.

First incident resulted in the car stalling multiple times, when started it would stutter, rpms couldn't get into normal range and when trying to put in gear it would stall out. the wrench light came on and i was finally able to start while keeping my foot on the gas pedal. once driving could only reach 40mph. since the first incident the frequency of problems has increased. shortly after that first incident it started surging (rpm's rev way up when putting it in to gear) to the point that it happens now practically every time i start the car. at times, the surge is so strong that even with my foot firmly pressed on the brake, the car still moves. a huge concern of ours is in parking areas, it is very scary to have the car surge with people moving in front or in back of the vehicle. i recently had a collision with a tree while backing up. i firmly believe the car surged after i had started backing up resulting in the collision. i have called the dealership multiple times and understand that the throttle body linkage is thought to be the issue. my sister has a lincoln ls that was recalled for this exact issue - she had the part replaced as a result of the recall even though she had never experienced the surging/stalling described. after doing some research, i found that this problem is much more prevalent than i thought and hope that a recall will be issued to get this corrected before someone gets hurt.

On tuesday, our car lost engine power in traffic. the check engine light came on and engine in failsafe mode appeared on the dash. she turned the car off and on, and it worked fine. she checked online and found identical problems, and solutions in turning the car off and on. i checked online, found identical failures, a longstanding shortage of throttle parts, presumed a defect in the throttle control, found no fhtsa recalls, but discovered surging documented in pe11-018 (opened may 11, 2011). our car has also had high rpm surges, occurring infrequently, but usually when the engine is cold. our au pair experienced surging 2 weeks earlier when she backed out of a garage parking lot and bumped another car. below are representative websites that document 21 instances of sudden power loss and engine warning failsafe mode in the ford freestyle described as sudden stalling, car going to idle, engine dying, running limp, and going into neutral. my wife's experience is consistent with these descriptions. also, many complaints report surges (pe11-018) and loss of power in the same vehicle complaint, also consistent with our experience: http://www.myfordfreestyle.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2197&sid=78cbeb4f4aaa7dd9c571f0cf9c804d74&start=0 15 complaints: fraggle, tmad, mrdinmn, lmarqueling, fordman351, sanlen, fuxxy, gavin, stock mach, scoutman97, lmtech, metalages, indiefilmguy, boston_freestyle, mkramer http://answers.edmunds.com/question-ford-freestyle-throttle-control-transmission-light-came-on-also-engine-failsafe-mode-activated-what-s-wrong-40589.aspx 1 complaint: boots7714 http://www.carcomplaints.com/ford/freestyle/2005/engine/throttle_body_malfunction.shtml 4 complaints: michelle o, dennal, sally w, oldschool77 http://www.fixya.com/cars/t1531392-enigine_fail_safe_mode 1 complaint: handyt

Car wont accelerate from a stop and will surge from a stop and when backing up. took it to mccarthy ford in chicago where they informed me it was the mass flow sensor, six days later i'm having same problem and now being told it's the throttle body.

The car started showing hesitation when accelerating and making a strange noise early in 2010. this condition got progressively worse until one day, while driving on the freeway, the engine would not respond to the gas pedal being depressed, the wrench light came on, and i was forced to coast to the side of the road. i turned the car off for a few minutes and when i attempoted to restart it, the gas pedal seemed to be working again. took the car to jones ford the next day and they told me the throttle body was bad and replaced it to the tune of $638.97. date of service was april 1, 2020. mileage at time of failure was 61,540 everything seemed fine for a few months but i started noticing the hesitation on acceleration again. took it to summerville ford on july 21, 2010. i didn't wait for a complete failure since it was extremely dangerous to lose power on the freeway with a whole car load of kids! jones ford said the throttle body was bad again and replaced it under warranty this time. checked for codes and got code #u0141. mileage at time of replacement was 65,207. within the last couple of weeks i have noticed similar conditions to the last two times the throttle body failed. yesterday i was parking and the car surged forward as i let my foot of the brake, almost causing me to hit the car in the spot in front of me. i have no choice but to keep driving it until something is done by ford about this dangerous condition. i was also told that the motor mount needs to be replaced. i also have repalced the 2/3 row seat pivot once during warranty but it failed again in 2010 and i haven't been able to afford to replace it. the a/c compressor stopped working this summer. still not fixed. i have replaced my tires twice in seven years. i have replaced both sets of brakes. ford needs t address these common failures. before someone gets hurt!

Vehicle accelerates from a parked position while shifting from p to r or d. the acceleration is greater when wheels are turned. this vehicle is in florida so the a/c is always on.

My ford freestyle 2005 has been lunging for months.i purchased this vehicle used from a private party. of course if the previous owner had any issues he did not share them with me.the vehicle did have some minor dings which he claimed occured when he backed into a fence.he had been having some severe medical problems so i am wondering did he just think it was his fault, not realizing the car had lunged. i see a lot of other people on the internet are having the same problems. when are you going to recall this vehicle? it is very scary and does it in forward and reverse. i have been afraid to park in any tight spaces where it may lung and cause a accident or injure someone.i have a handicap parking tag but have been leary of parking in those spaces should this happen. also the air conditioning only operates when the vehicle is accelerating, i saw others have that issue also. please take action soon before these vehicles suddenly lunge on a interstate and cause serious injuries or death.thank you.

The vehicle started surging without foot on the gas pedal. this occurs at low speeds or when stopping. have had to rapidly press the brake pedal and hold it to avoid accidents. when the surging occurs, many times the vehicle goes into fail-safe engine mode which does not allow one to shift into higher gears. this caused a problem on the interstate when caught in stop and go traffic. could not accelerate after surge-engine dying-failsafe engine mode. check engine light stays on after occurence and failsafe engine mode was solved by pulling over, killing the motor, waiting, and then restarting. surging is causing a stress on the transmission which now appears to have slack in it.

Engine / speed surging especially noticeable when parking. whether in drive or reverse engine moderates only slightly but car lurches. this has happened to three different drivers of the same car, same day, similar experiences. extra pressure was needed on brake to prevent car from hitting other cars in parking lot. . . . circumstances: hot day ( 90+ f), air conditioning on, engine at idle speed while maneuvering into / out from parking, turning wheel or holding wheel turned during maneuver

My 2005 ford freestyle sel has experiences issues with surging, stalling and inability to accelerate. the problems started at least 2 years ago (2009) at which time i called my local dealership to inquire on recalls (warranty was out) and was told there were no recalls to fix this issue. since the surge has increased in frequency, most any time i start the vehicle and put it in gear, it will surge (rpm's rev up on their own). having my foot on the brake at times still does not hold the car completely still and has concerned me on more occasions than not when in parking lots at stores with people moving around my vehicle. the stall & inability to accelerate happens less frequently but has happened a handful of times and always results in the check engine light (wrench) coming on. the vehicle will not perform as it should until the check engine has been cleared. i recently backed into a tree at my work and firmly believe it happened due to a surge after i put the car in gear and started backing up. i did not have enough time to react (stopping the vehicle) before it hit the tree. i've owned my car since 2007 - my sister has a lincoln ls that was recalled just before my car started these episodes. her car was recalled for everything i've stated above (even though it had never done it) - the throttle body linkage was replaced. i've called the dealership on numerous occasions, even stating that her lincoln received the recall that my car needs, with absolutely no help or suggestions.

Vehicle will lunge and jerk while backing or under braking. engine will rev and then stall as well. check engine light with come on or it will go into fail-safe mode. took it to a local ford dealership and they advised it needed a new throttle body. after researching the issue we discovered this is a common problem with this model and year.

I own a 2005 ford freestyle. i often experience a surge in my vehicles acceleration even when i have not touched the gas peddle. this occurs most often with the air conditioning off and just after i put the car in drive. today i nearly ran over a pedestrian after shifting my car into gear, and so i googled the problem when i got home. i see that you are investigating this problem with the freestyle. please demand a recall before someone gets hurt.

2005 ford freestyle unexpectedly accelerates when car is put into gear (forward or reverse), this seems to be aligned with other complaints associated with nhtsa investigation pe11018. the engine will rev when putting the car into gear and will lurch in the direction of the gear that it was placed in. this is not due to the driver inadvertently pressing on the gas pedal at the same time as the brake. the driver has to firmly press on the brakes to prevent the car from moving. if the brake is only pressed just enough to put the car in gear the vehicle will actually move 3-4 feet. the happens sporadically but does occur at least 4-5 times a week.

Vehicle lurching when idling or low speeds. repeated excessive wear on rear brakes. front brakes working properly.

I first noticed a surge in the car just as it was out of warranty. the problem has gotten progressively worse with time. whenever the car comes to a stop (e.g. in a parking spot) the car surges in the direction the transmission is selected. additional brake pressure is immediately required to keep the vehicle from moving forward. likewise... when first selecting reverse from a stopped position the vehicle surges drastically which also requires prompt additional braking to keep the vehicle under control. the vehicle has always been well maintained by the dealer. the surging may be coming from an issue within the function of the throttle body, but not 100% sure of that. the addition of fuel cleaners seems to help, but only a little... and then only temporarily. symptoms occur year round, but seem to be worsened by high ambient temperatures. the vehicle is a threat to safety in it's design and should be recalled.

After sitting in a restaurant's parking lot with the engine idling and the air conditioning on for about 30 minutes, the car lunged backward several feet when the car with placed into reverse. once the car was stopped, i placed the car in drive and it lunged forward without me pressing the gas pedal. luckily, there once no one around the car when this happened or there could have been injuries caused by the car's actions. also, the car's failsafe engine mode and wrench light came on. this caused the car's power to be minimized to a crawl. we were only able to get the car's speed up to around 20 to 30 mph. after experiencing this issue, i looked on the internet to find that many individuals were having the same problem with this model. it appears that it is an issue with the throttle body component on this model that is bad and causing this problem. this is a serious safety issue and i would hope that ford would be held responsible for replacing this part under a recall.

We started noticing the engine surge a few months ago whenever we shifted out of park or neutral. the rpm's jumped around 400-600 above idle and now are over 700-800 with the a/c on. so far, we have not experienced any damage to the vehicle. i took the vehicle to my local ford dealer, blackwell ford in plymouth, mi and was told i needed the throttle body needed replacement at a cost of over $800.00. the vehicle has 94000 miles on it and aside from that problem, we have been pleased with it.

Tl- the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. while the contact was driving approximately 10 mph approaching a stop sign, the brake pedal was engaged and the vehicle began to surge, followed by the illumination of the engine fail safe mode message and the check engine warning indicator. the failures occurred intermittently during extremely hot weather temperatures. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer four times for diagnosis; however they were unable to duplicate the problem or determine the cause of failure. the manufacturer was not made aware of the defect. the approximate failure mileage was 67,772. rvk

My 2005 ford freestyle unexpectedly lunges forward in drive and reverse. this usually happens in high heat after using a/c for a while. thankfully i've had my foot over the brake during these occurrences, but this issue concerns me. i have also been told by a local ford dealership that my ac compressor is leaking, and wonder if the two are linked somehow.

My 2005 ford freestyle has been surging when my foot is on the brake. i have noticed these last few days it has been surging when i am attempting to pick up speed. tonight just after i turned it on it putitself in engine safe mode and would not let me drive faster than 5 mph. it was chugging the whole way down the street, then finally just turned off.

The vehicle surges when at a complete stop. it also stops when driving it down the road. the wrench light comes on and the vehicle slows to a complete stop. this is extremely dangerous. the service engine light comes on. the vehicle does this on a consistent basis......6 or 7 times per 25 miles! i took it to the ford garage where i purchased it in clinton, nc. they put it on the machine and said they could not find anything wrong. their suggestion was to turn off air or heat!!! now after researching this issue online i find out there are numerous complaints about the same issue. i took the car to a local mechanic who was suggested to me by our local advance auto store. the mechanic was very familiar with the freestyle and the same issue. the solution to fix the problem is a new throttle body. at a cost of $520.00. i called the ford garage in clinton, nc to see if they had the part so my local mechanic could fix it. now the parts employee, bobby told me the throttle body problem was a huge issue with the freestyle and there should have been a recall. is it going to take someone getting killed or seriously injured before ford takes responsibility. by the way, i have contacted ford, to no avail. the wrench light issue started once in a while on february 18, 2011. it now is a daily thing multiple times a day since april 5, 2011.

I own a 2005 ford freestyle sel awd. the car lunges out of park. happened about three times in the last 30~ 60 days the car comes to a failsafe engine mode. i have to shut off the engine and restart it to clear the failsafe mode. this is not the first time this has happened. it has happened in the past few years.
07/03/2011115000
After idling at a stop light, the car lost most of its power when resuming through the intersection. have had many similar issues since this incident where the vehicle will lunge forward or backward by itself when the brake is partially depressed or the when the brake is fully depressed the engine revs up by itself. drivetrain light came on once when power was decreased and then went away when the vehicle was left parked an off for an hour. ford dealership has determined the throttlebody is cracked. offered to fix for $900. no action has been taken because of the steep expense.

Vehicle's engine surges at low speeds when backing up or going forwards. the problem is most noticeable when the air conditioner is running. it does not happen consistently which makes it difficult for dealership to diagnose, and it is unpredictable and dangerous. pressing the brakes will stop the surge. it has been happening off and on for a year but has increased in frequency to where it occurs nearly every day.

Our freestyle has experienced mild but worsening unintended acceleration for two years now, but it was always mild and did not cause the car to lurch forward even when the driver's foot was hard on the brake pedal. then we had a new problem: no cold air from the ac at idle. we responded (6/11) to a mailed promotion from hertrich ford (easton md) for an ac tune up. they did nothing but add dye to our refrigerant and clean our air ducts with disinfectant. so we turned to the owners' forum, myfordfreestyle.com, and quickly diagnosed the problem: a seized-up pressure control valve. apparently ford dealers refuse to perform this simple repair (part cost $40) and will only replace the entire ac compressor ($800 + labor). so we ordered the valve online and had a competent local mechanic replace the valve (1-hour labor plus cost of refrigerant). the ac is good as new, but the unintended acceleration is now much worse. the incidents always occur at very low to no speed and when maneuvering the car (i.e. parking, k-turning, etc.). in all of these situations, both the ac and the power steering pump are demanding/drawing near-maximum power from an essentially idling engine, nearly stalling the engine; the electronic engine/idle control then kicks-in and hugely over-reacts by revving the engine to 2,000+ rpm. even with your foot on the brake, an automatic in drive is going to surge quite far at 2000+ rpm. please look at the myfordfreestyle.com website: note that almost all of the complaints about unintended acceleration come during hot weather months and a few also note the problem is much worse with the ac on. it took us less than 30 minutes on the website to diagnose both the ac problem and unintended acceleration problem. it is inconceivable that ford has not been aware of both of these problems for years.  When parking the vehicle or reversing out of a parking spot the engine will rev and the vehicle will lunge forward as if i had pushed the accelerator but my foot was applying pressure to the brake. this has occurred since i bought the vehicle in 2005 at approximately 11,000 miles but the latest incident happened yesterday, july 4, 2011. up until recently i could not reproduce it on a regular basis so i did not take it to the dealership. after reading an article on reuters website that this is being investigated by nhtsa i decided to report it here. as the article states, it appears more often when i have the air conditioning on high. i spoke to the service department at the ford dealership in flat rock michigan and they said they were unaware of this problem and that there is probably nothing they can do to correct it. to date, this has caused no injuries or accidents but it is only because i take extra precautions (e.g. turn off the air conditioning or be prepared to apply extra pressure to the brake when parking) to ensure the car does not lunge forward and hit anything.

When shifting from park to drive or reverse the engine will rev and the car lunges forward or backward. it is much worse with the ac on, but does it at any time. it has recently starting doing this after coming to a stop while driving. the car will then shut off and go into engine fail safe mode and has has limited power. luckily no one was directly behind us when the incident occurred.

2005 ford freestyle sel exhibited unintended acceleration when pulling into parking space. vehicle surged forward about 2 feet while moving foot from accelerator to brake. engine speed returned to idle once brake was applied.

Vehicle lunging into reverse 1. events to make it happen: put the vehicle into reverse with foot on brake and sometimes the vehicle will accelerate rapidly 2. occurs whether or not the engine is hot, but usually the weather is warm. 3. when first noticed the problem in 2008, was told the part to replace was the throttle body position sensor assembly and the part would be unavailable for 12 months. never replaced the parts. learned to keep foot on brake.

At random times when the car is idling or at low speeds with no contact with the gas pedal, the engine surges. this occurs in forward or reverse, with or without the brake being applied. at times, the surging is severe and requires a lot of pressure on the brake to hold the car in place. last year, it seemed to occur more often with the ac on. the compressor died, so we had it replaced, but that did not fix the issue. we have not crashed into anything but have come very close. it is troubling since it occurs at low speeds, meaning we're in close proximity to cars, people, and buildings when the engine surges.

Ford freestyle stalls and shuts down while driving, disabling the powered steering among other things and causes very unsafe situations. this will usually start with some hesitations of the engine and then it dies. often it stalls while taking off from standstill as well either forward or going in reverse. sometimes there is surging of the engine as well, especially while using ac or turning the steering wheel. this has caused many dangerous situations on the road where all of the sudden we stall in middle of traffic. the car has been to the dealer about three times for these issues, last time for fuel system cleaning but this has not solved the problems.

Tl-the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. while driving at an unknown low speed the vehicle surged forward until heavy pressure was applied to the brake pedal. the failure has since recurred intermittently. the contact also stated the vehicle would intermittently stall while driving at highway speeds. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the computer was replaced. the failures continued so the vehicle was taken back to the authorized dealer where the contact was told the throttle body needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 50,000 and the current mileage was 60,000. sm.

My 2005 ford freestyle with 58,000 miles suddenl;y looses all the instrument panel indications and the engine then dies. restart is possible and instruments then return to normal. this usually occurs within a few minutes of starting the car but has happened at speed on the highway. the dealer claims this is a common freestyle problem and the entire instrument cluster has to be replaced at a cost of $700.00. why has this obvious safety issue not been subject to a reaclall?

My vehcile has had a habit of lurching foward in an involuntary montion. many times i've gone from park to drive, with brakes applied, the rpm increase and a strong lurch foward is done. even with the brakes applied it nearly forces itself to go foward when i thro it in reverse, it will repeat this involuntary action. when i am at a stop light or stop sign it will want to do the same action foward. i fear i will some day hit a vehicle or people in parking lot. i have taken it to my ford dealer and the computer does not give any faults. i have taken it some four times for the same thing. in addition, i keep informing them of the power steering. it makes loud humming and grinding noise, but the dealer keeps telling me their is nothing wrong with the system. the air conditioner also has a fault, when not in use it will run by itself and blow cold air. i have to turn it on and off until it stops blowing. once it did it with the engine off. i have also complained to the dealer but with the same results, thier is nothing wrong. i keep asking myself, how can i make the ford auto maker responsible is the vehicle lurches foward and hits another car or worse, i can hit a pedestrian?

2005 ford freestyle surges and lunges forward while foot is brake. sitting at a red light with my foot on the brakes the rpms surge and the car starts lunging forward pulling me out into the intersection. the car then shutdown for a second and went into limp home mode. luckily i was able to put the car in reverse and backup before i was hit by the oncoming traffic. took the car to the dealer and was told the throttle body assembly would have to be replaced but the part was on a 3 month back order. dealer would not advise me the car was safe to drive!

To whom it may concern: we did have a terrible problem with our 2005 freestyle and it was in the ford repair shop on and off for over three months. the first time it went in we paid to have the work done but when it started linking again we refused to pay even though our warranty was up at the time and ford agreed not to charge us. after calling ford headquarters to complain, the manager of the dealership intervened and they also gave us a loaner car. i first noticed a leak in the back (but i think it was leaking much longer than i realized) and they fixed the leak in the back and then it leaked in the front. this went on for several weeks but i must tell you that they did finally fix it. sorry to say, we did have it back last spring for another leak in the front on the passenger side. although i had gone online and saw that several owners of freestyles had the same problem, ford never admitted that there was a flaw in the design but i think by agreeing to fix it for free it was obvious that there was a flaw. we purchased this car from colonial ford in danbury, ct and the work was all done in their repair center. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. he experienced unintended vehicle acceleration while driving in reverse gear or at a complete stop. the dealer replaced the throttle body; however, after the repair was made the engine began to stall. the dealer was notified, and a technician concluded that the repair parts were on back order; therefore, no repairs were made. the failure mileage was 78,000 and the current mileage was 84,000.

When the vehicle was put in reverse the car would jerk and almost stall, then when shifted to drive the car would stall, when the car was shut off and the put into drive the car ran rough, i had taken it to the dealer the first time , they told me there was water in the box, i am a certified mechanic, and i never heard of this, i had taken the car back, to the dealer and they had the car for two weeks before they found out it was the throttle body, they didn't have one in stock, they searched across the country , not one to be found , they called ford motor company , they didn't have one either, they said they are trying to find someone to make the part, , it is a die cast part, then it has to be machined then fitted with the sensors, , wire ports and vacuum sockets have to be machined, they are supposed to call me sept 30, 09 to let me know the status, i have a very bad feeling about this, i can almost guarantee the part is not going to be right, as of sept 30 09 they have had my car two months, i think they are going to wait until my extended warranty expires, then the car is good for nothing but a planter in the front yard, i have terminal brain cancer and need my car to carry my wheel chair around, the dealer first gave me a focus, then a taurus, i still cant lift my wheel chair to lay it flat in the trunk, i have asked for something comparable to my 2005 ford freestyle, , which i just lift my chair strait up and put it in, but what this whole problem has created, is a serious safety problem, if this part lets go on the freeway the car will jerk the wheels will lock up and hopefully the car behind is watching , otherwise , this is going to be a serious accident. *tr

I was in a parking space in my 2005 ford freestyle. when i put the car in reverse the engine revved up and the car went back very fast before stalling out. the dash board read fail safe mode. i brought the car to my local ford dealer and they said it's the throttle body - a part on back order until nov 09 and costs $700 plus $300 labor ~ and they sent me home with my car!! very unsure of driving my vehicle until then with my 2 young children nevermind the dangers to other people. ford issued a technical bulletin back in dec 05 for this exact issue. a simple google search on line shows that their are many complaints regarding this issue. why has there not been a recall yet. clearly there needs to be an investigation into this issue that seems to be a common occurrence for the 2005 ford freestyle. *tr

I own a 2005 ford freestyle just bought it last year and it has been at bob bell ford for over a week. i was at the beach and the car stalled twice and went in to a fail safe mode. i took it to bob bell ford and they told me that it was the throttle body and that it was on back order until november 2009. i was told that i could come pick up my car and if it breaks down they will come get me. not thinking that i could be involved in a accident if it stalls well driving. i have called headquarters to see what they are going to do for me as far as a rental and they told me they can't do anything for that length of time. this all has to do with the plants being shut down and parts no being made. someone just bought a new gm camaro and had to sign a waiver stating that if the car breaks down they could have to wait 6 months to a year to get parts and they are still responsible for making the payment. the part that i need is on national back order. other people with this same car are having the same problem with this part. just looking to see what can be done because i can not go without a car until november. i have 3 kids and i work 2 jobs to support my family. without a car hoe am i supposed to get back to work. thank you very much for taking the time to help me. *tr

Dt*: the consumer stated the engine operated at a reduced speed when he attempted to accelerate. although the problem was worse in cold temperatures, it would occur in any climate. there was no warning indicators prior to the incident. in some instances, the vehicle loudly back fired. the vehicle has been seen by a dealer. the dealer could not duplicate the problem, and suggested the consumer let the vehicle warm up prior to driving. *jb

Dt: the consumer states while decelerating the vehicle stalls. this happens more in warm weather and after the vehicle has been driven approximately 25 miles. if the headlights are on there is a warning after the vehicle has stalled. the vehicle has been to three different service dealers in three different states. the problem cannot be duplicated and dealers cannot repair the problem. the consumer and the service dealer do not know what specific component is the problem.*ak

Our a/c compressor recently went bad and had to be replaced. we were told by two different ford dealerships that this was one known problem with ford freestyles; the second being a lunging or lurching problem that involves the throttle body which i have also filed a complaint for this issue. we were told that no recall had been issued for the compressor (or the throttle body), but that these were the most common problems with the freestyle. interestingly, the throttle body problem seems to be exeracerbated by the a/c, and i virtually had no problems with lurching and lunging until the compressor and other related cooling components were replaced. at that time, the lunging started again with a vengence. these issues seem to be related and costly to repair.

2005 ford freestyle-the ac compressor and drier was replaced at about 93,000 miles through the extended warranty. it only cost me75.00 . no big deal right. the total bill was nearly 1600.00 for the warranty company. now at 125,000 miles, it has gone out again. no warranty. i've to pay. it is going to cost about 1600.00. now they can't find a compressor and are back ordered until april of 2011. i have never had a compressor go out on any other car i have owned. approxiamately 20 cars in thirty five years of driving. several with onver 250,000 miles. if ac compr. are on back order, many must be having the same problem. i need help. this is a rip off.

We just bought a used 2005 ford freestyle and the dealer we bought it from told us the awd malfunction alert would come on, but it would not stay on long enough for a mechanic to check what was wrong with it. we did notice the alert coming on, but on our 4th day of driving the vehicle, we were pulling away from a drive thru window and preparing to maneuver around two vehicles stopped in front of us and i had just taken my foot off the brake and not even touched the gas pedal when the car lunged forward. i applied the brake and then slowly took my foot away again and the car lunged and the engine died. the car still had enough momentum after the engine died to allow me to coast away from the two vehicles in front of me. i tried to start the car again and it lunged and died again. on the third try, it started and i was able to get out of the parking lot, but i was very frightened. i did make it home alright, but the awd malfunction alert stayed on and at times the alert would also read failsafe engine mode. also, the traction control alert icon lit up and a wrench was lit up under it in the instrument panel. we hope ford will help freestyle owners soon before someone has a terrible accident.

Vehicle has a sudden jump in acceleration even when driver is pressing on the brake pedal. it feels as if both the brake and accelerator are being pressed and the car is in conflict. then the idle seems to drop either to a point of the vehicle dying or almost stalling. when restarted (sometimes this takes 2-3 tries to keep it running) or idle evens out the rpms and acceleration are delayed for some time. while pressing on the accelerator (even pushing almost to the floor) the vehicle will not increase in speed (in a normal response time-within 3-4 miles) and rpms top out at 2000. this happens at both low speeds and when attempting to acheive highway speeds. the trigger for this is typically a sharp turn. this also results in the check engine light coming on and giving diagnostic codes of p061b and p2106 which i have been unable to find a description of these codes. this has happened once every 4-6 weeks to begin with, but has increased in frequency to 3-4 times a month. i have not replaced the throttle body but that appears to be the common fix as reported by others experiencing this problem. after leaving the car sit for several hours and restarting the next day or 4-5 hours later the problem is not apparent until the next time.

Our 2005 ford freestyle is lunging forward at low speeds. we need to firmly press on the breaks to stop it which is very dangerous! at this point, the engine stalls. it seems clear this is a very common issue in this vehicle due to a malfunctioning throttle body. this is not safe and there needs to be a recall to perminently fix the issue!

The vehicle on a very hot day 95 degrees out with the a/c on high was put into reverse with foot on the brake and the car surged backwards and went into saftey mode. had to drive the car home in saftey mode. my wife says it happend a few times to her also. the upper motor mount on the engine has totally fell apart, the rubber bushing dried out and is gone. called ford and they told me the part is $230.00.

My wife drives a 2005 ford freestyle and it has a tendency to lunge forward when put into drive, without her foot on the gas pedal. she keeps her foot on the brake, but it still lunges. this also happens when she puts the car in reverse. i drove the car saturday and experienced it for myself. i feel that this is unsafe and am debating parking the vehicle until something is done.

I noticed on yesterday's news that my vehiocle and problem is under investigation, so i want to add my voice to the number who have had a similar problem. my 2005 ford freestyle lurches unexpectedly. it will only occur for a few seconds. i have owned the car for 1.5 years, and it has happened on 2 separate ocassions. both times i was travelling very slowly preparing to enter a parking stall. fortunately i already had my foot on the brake, so not damage or injuries occurred.

Tl-the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. the contact stated whenever the vehicle is in idle or reverse the vehicle will jerk backwards or forward even if she does not depress the accelerator pedal or the brake pedal. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated the vehicle needed a new part but the contact stated she does not know what it is called. the repairs would cosxt $1000. the manufacturer was contacted and informed the contact they would have to pay for the repairs due to no recalls. the failure mileage was 50,000 the current mileage was 55,000...mw

Vehicle surges forward and in reverse, even when foot is applied to the brake. this happens on a daily basis nearly every time the vehicle is driven and is very dangerous, especially when in traffic and while maneuvering in parking lots. the surges are unpredictable and occur mainly when the vehicle is initially placed into drive or reverse, but can happen randomly while just sitting with it in gear. it has been happening for over two years now. the engine safe light has come on on two occasions in the past two months as well, but has cleared itself after switching the car off, then back on.

I bought a used 2005 ford freestyle and it has been a good car up until the past 6 months. within those months i have had the engine mouting bracket break and the car, during stop and go driving, will randomly lunge foward or backward. when the car decides to lunge, even with your foot on the break, it is not stopped completly. i have contacted ford about this issue and have done numerous hours of research myself. all of the research that i have done points to the throttle body going bad, however, ford denies that there is any kind of a safety issue and that there is no recall. ford will however, gladly charge me 600.00 to replace it. when there is a safety problem with a vehicle, and random, uncontrolable lunges are a safety problem, the dealer should take responsibilty and fix the defective part. with the hundreds of posts that i have read by other freestyle owners with the same problems, most of which have been in the past 2 years, the part should definatly be recalled and fixed by ford.

Have a 2005 ford freestyle- with a throttle body issue. the part is on back order- no rental given by company. fail safe engine mode and check engine light is one because of it- they insist that it is safe to drive (i drive 75 miles back and forth to work everyday). i am sorry- but driving that many miles- with my children in the car as well- while the engine is failing- is never safe. because of the jolting forward and backwards while in this mode- i can't even count how many times i have almost hit another car, or a pedestrian! what happens when the engine does fail- is ford going to replace that?

When sitting idle with a/c on, engine revs on it's own and has gone into failsafe mode. when going from park to reverse, car lunges while in reverse causing a significant safety issue if the brake is not applied quick enough. the car also lunges forward when going from park to drive. the car has a tendency to lunge at a stoplight and then shut off and go into failsafe mode forcing a restart of the car once it has been taken out of drive and back into park. this has been going on for a few months, but we can't afford to fix it until next month. even when we do go to order a new throttle body through ford, which is what was recommended to fix the problem, it's apparently on a horrendous backorder until further notice.

I have a 2005 ford freestyle with a cvt transmission. the car did not show any previous signs of problems or engine indicator lights. in may of 2009 the car had approximately 42,000 miles on it. i was driving approximately 30 mph when the transmission slipped a rod causing the transmission to explode leaving pieces of the transmission on the road way. during the explosion, pieces from the transmission damaged other parts of the engine. a new transmission was required.

2005 ford freestyle - i am having problems with the car randomly lurching it has happened while backing up and moving forward - after the lurch it may be fine other times it shuts off or the car goes into fail safe mode. particular worries me while backing up in parking lots and such worried it would cause me to hit someone/ something. it has done this on quite a few occassions over several months and seems to have become worse during the hotter months.

2005 ford freestyle limited awd. the vehicle, when a/c unit is on and outside temperature is between 80 and 90 degree f, surges forward violently, approx. 1 to 2 feet, while trying to slow down or stop. then engine goes into safe mode and stalls. when researching this problem on the website myfordfreestyle.com there was information about the possible cause of the surge. the ford service dept. recommends replacing the throttle body due to excess sludge build up inside the unit. $700.00 plus fix. i took my car into the ford service dept. in my area, gave the description of the problem, they said it was probably the throttle body and that i would have to get this replaced and that the car was unsafe to drive due to the surging. ford says the throttle body is on back order.

For several months we had noticed that when we shifted our vehicle into gear (forward or reverse) the car would lurch forward/backward as we came off the brake. several weeks ago, my wife had the vehicle in line at my daughters elementary school driveway waiting to pick her up. as she released pressure on the brake, the vehicle unexpectedly jumped forward and she needed to slam on the brakes to stop it. the engine then went into failsafe mode and ran on diminished performance until she was able to get the vehicle home. upon examination, it was determined that the throttle body needed to be replaced on a car with 65,000 miles. it was the faulty throttle body that had been causing the car to unexpectedly lurch/surge forward. i am filing this complaint because it appears that it is not an isolated issue for the vehicle and it is a family vehicle which means that there are many of them sitting in school parking lots and pick up lanes. as you can imagine a vehicle that unexpectedly surges forward in an area full of children caused a great deal of concern to my wife and i. in my research there appears to be technical service bulletins issued by ford regarding this matter and although my car had been in for it 60k service just months before, there was no mention of a problem with the throttle body. the ford dealer wasted no time telling us that the part is not covered under their extended power train warranty which i had on the vehicle. quite honestly, that was not my main concern as a child could have easily been harmed by this faulty throttle body and the symptoms it produces. the dealer replaced the throttle body and cleaned the injectors and the vehicle is running better.

Sudden loss of power while driving, has happened 3 times already. happens when it's rainy, after not driving the car for a day. can be really bad if happens on the highway - you step on gas and there's no response (the engine is running) - the car can essentially stop by itself in the middle of the road. date of first incident reported, mileage at the time - 90,000. *tr

The vehicle will jerk and buck when backing up or going forward and then go into failsafe mode and shut off. this is very dangerous but yet there is no recall on this particular problem. it also accelerates by itself when in park for a long period of time and you can barely stop it. almost hit someone because of it. nothing has been done as of yet spoke with ford and they said there is no recall so they're not fixing it. *tr
