 I purchased my 2006 ford freestyle in december 2009. as soon as the weather got warmer i noticed that when parking, backing up, or trying to stop, the vehicle would surge as if i still had my foot on the accelerator. soon it also started surging/sputtering when i first started out and would occasionally stall, twice in heavy traffic. i took the vehicle to the ford dealership to discover that the throttle body position sensor doesn't work properly & that all freestyles were having the same problem. i was shocked to find that a new unit could be put in but was not covered as a recall and was going to cost $1000. as a single mom, that was just impossibe. luckily my disabled father was previously a mechanic and was able to use carb cleaner to clean the sensor and temporarily stop the problem. since then, every spring the problem comes back and i have to have the throttle body unit cleaned several times before winter. another problem i have with this vehicle is that the brakes wear out unusually quickly. i don't know if it's because of having to fight the throttle position sensor to stop the car, or if it's a flaw in the design of the brake system. i do know that when it starts to feel like they are wearing out i have to replace them asap because the more they get worn the faster they wear out, if that makes sense. something i've just recently noticed is that the lights (interior, exterior, display, all of them) have been almost blinking...getting brighter/dimmer and at the same time my a/c blows harder/softer, like they are surging as well. upon further examination i found that the top and bottom driver's side motor mounts have cracked/rotted bushings. ford should absolutely replace these throttle bodies without question; my children ride in my freestyle every day and one close call is one too many. i want this fixed once and for all.

 I was in mrytle beach summer of 2010 when i was backing my vehicle out of a parking space it lumged back almost causing a wreck. then when i went forward did the same stalled. changed fuel filter and everything. about 1 month later did it again. i seems to do it when the tempture outside is warm. this is very scary and not sure what has to happen for ford to recall. i guess someone has to die and they have to be sued.

 My car began having problems lunging forward while i was stopped at a school zone cross-walk waiting for children to cross. it lunged forward and stopped just inches from hitting 4 children. it terrified me!!!! it happened several times that day and the next day until i could get it in the shop. i was told it needed the throttle body replaced by the ford mechanics but luckily i got by with just a throttle body cleaning. the car no longer lunges forward. about the same time, the car had problems feeling like it wouldn't get past 2nd gear and it wouldn't accelerate. i still don't know what caused this. a few months later the car started making a strange clicking noise that would get faster when i would accelerate then slower when i would brake. it quit making the noise by the time i could take it to get it looked at a few days later. the air conditioner won't get cold unless the car is in motion. the heater does the same thing. it only seems to happen on extreme temperature days. then spontaneously, both these problems seemed to fix themselves. just this week, my car backfired 2 times, then the next morning when i started it, it smelled horrible! i turned it off immediately, then the next day, it wouldn't start. took it to my ford mechanic, and he said everything checked out ok. he now thinks there is something wrong with the computer system. everything i have read on the internet suggests that these have been huge problems for many ford freestyle owners. and yet no recall? come on ford!! you have lost many loyal customers over this!! please help all of us to get a recall issued for this car!! i am a single mother of three children, and if i get stranded, i, like many people, have nobody to call and no way to pay if i get stranded. please help before someone gets seriously injured or even killed. many other probs but no room to list.

 Vehicle will not start. dealership claimed that the throttle body needs to be replace along with a computer update to a tune of $800+. various posts have been found on the internet regarding a known defect with this this model year's throttle body including a lunging issue caused by this failed component. i would like this issue to be investigated and ford to be responsible for the replacement and remedy of this defective component.

 I drive a 2006 freestyle. just weeks after buying it from used dealer the vehicle started lunging when i would attempt to stop or be at a slow pace. example being in parking lot and trying to park it would lung from about 1000 rpm to 4000-5000 rpms. this would throw my car forward. i did tap a car that day but no body damage. also the car will be driving down the road and the wrench comes on and motor shuts down. there is no warning and has been very scary when merging into 75mph traffic with no where to go. on the 6th of june 2011 the throttle body was replaced. however within the 30 days all symptoms were occurring again. i had the compressor go out which cost $1000 to replace. on 12/02/11 i took the vehicle back to the shop, they ran codes and found it was the transmission. i have many accounts of the lunging and the wrench shut down issue. it has become very regular and makes my car very unreliable.

 On several occasions while i was driving in route to work or the grocery store, my 06 ford freestyle seemed slow and sluggish to respond as i would be waiting at a red light for the green. when the light did turn green and i would press the gas pedal to go, the car would shut off. a few times there were close calls as the car behind me would be unaware i was having trouble and almost rear-end me. when the car would cut off, i would proceed to restart the car and then press the gas to go. the car seemed to respond extremely slow like i would have the gas pedal pressed to the floor and would only be able to go 20 - 25 mph. on other occasions, the car would seem to lurch forward or backward (depending on if i had the car in drive or reverse) the throttle body failure on my 2006 ford freestyle creates a very dangerous situation because the engine will accelerate without applying the gas pedaland will no accelerate at times when the gas pedal is pressed. after a little research i found this to be arecurring problem on 2006, and 2007 ford freestyle vehicles. ford is or should be well aware the proble exist and has for some time and has done nothing about it , to add insult to injury my car has been at the ford dealership for over a month because the parts needed to repair it [ throttlebody ] is not availiable and no one can tell me for sure when it will be people at ford tell me that the company making the part went out of bussiness without notice, well needless to say this does not help my situation, i have notified my state and federal highway safety commishners of the problem and i would like to ask everyone with a similar problem to do the same.

 While at a stop or putting the car into gear, the car will suddenly surge forward or backwards depending on putting the car into reverse or drive. this also will occur while sitting at a stop and getting ready to accelerate. the problem has been researched many times, and i come back to one conclusion a bad throttle body module. we have been very fortunate not to have an accident yet, but we are waiting. this is a fairly regular occurance and i am looking into replacing the part, but i keep seeing post everywhere saying this is a back order item.

 Vehicle is a 2006 ford freestyle limited all wheel drive...often, when idling with the transmission in drive and foot on brake, the engine rpms will increase without pressing the accelerator and the car will lunge forward until extreme pressure is applied to the brake pedal. sometimes, especially when in reverse and the car lunges as described, the car will stall after lunging and the check engine light will come on. upon restarting the engine, the car will run, but in a limited capacity with the check engine light on. stopping the car, turning the car off, and then restarting the car, clears the check engine light and the car will operate normally. this seems to occur more often when ambient temperature is around or above 90 degrees fahrenheit. since we purchased the car new in 2006, this has occurred at least 50 times.

 My 2006 ford freestyle is absolutely the worst made car i have ever owned! throttle body problem... 50,000 miles, check! ac compressor goes bad.... 60,000 miles, check! and now beginning at 79,000 miles the cvt transmission is trashed! $6000 to fix and you can't even get a new one! i drove it knowing it would go bad another 3000+ miles because i was destined to spend a lot of money either way. the mechanic actually suggested i trade it in when it began. would that have been fair to whomever bought it? these are all common early mileage problems with the freestyles! there are numerous posts about other owners with the same problems, especially these three and there are a couple more that fortunately i have dodged to this point. what is ford going to do? just let those of us who bought freestyles with cvt suffer. what about the fact that you stopped using the cvt transmission on the taurus x? why? i think we know based on the numerous cvt failures at such low mileage. but not low enough to be covered by warranty.

 Upon starting the car and putting it in either reverse or forward, the engine would race and either lunge forward or backward. whilst driving, the engine would sputter and stall. this was more prevalant when the air condition was turned on. on starting the car, i had to place my foot with a lot of pressure on the brake pedal to ensure that the car did not lunge. this was a very dangerous problem as i have two small children in the car and they could be hurt if the car stalled in heavy traffic and was struck. the dealer said that this was not under warranty and that they understood the problem but ford has not issued a recall on the part. it was rather expensive to replace this part. i am urging the government to issue a recall on this part before someone gets seriously hurt or killed. the part in question is the throttle body.

 Our 2006 ford freestyle lost power and began to surge irraticly. the vehicle then lost power and would not advance as if the transmission had gone out. the wrench symbol and the check engine light came on. we pulled over and shut the vehicle off. restarting the vehicle helped the wrench light go away but the engine light remained on. our local dealership has diagnosed the problem as a faulty throttlebody. the part was unavailable but was reassurred we could still drive the car. we started home and the problem re-occurred. our car surged and then lost power. we were stranded on hwy 95 in 116 degree heat. once we got home i started looking at the numerous complaints that ford freestyles have recieved on 2005-2007 models. we are currently waiting on the dealership to find a replacement throttlebody and schedule a repair. the car seems very unsafe when this problem occurs and ford recommends replacing it with the same defective part.

 Car will intermittently and suddenly surge forward or backward while in 0 speed condition such as during parallel parking and moving the shift lever from d to r or r to d. rpms increase during the surge without anything touching the accelerator pedal.it is required to slam the brake pedal to keep the car from hitting whatever or whoever is in front or rear of the vehicle. very scary and dangerous! this is a popular problem with 2005-2007 freestyles and is now known to be caused by a defective throttle body. replacement cost is anywhere from $800-$1000 at a ford dealership. this is clearly a safety issue that need to result in a vehicle recall for repair.

 Car lurches usually when putting it into drive or reverse. last week it lurched into oncoming traffic while pulling out of sonic drive-in, then it lost power scaring the bejesus out of the whole family. fortunately traffic was able to stop in time for us to limp out of the way. took it to a dealership they said the electronic throttle body needed to be replaced. got to checking and it appears to be a re-occurring theme with this car. worried if i spend the $500-$900 to have it repaired it will do it again down the road in a year or two or 30,000 miles.

 Car lurches usually when putting it into drive or reverse. last week it lurched into oncoming traffic while pulling out of sonic drive-in, then it lost power scaring the bejesus out of the whole family. fortunately traffic was able to stop in time for us to limp out of the way. took it to a dealership they said the electronic throttle body needed to be replaced. got to checking and it appears to be a re-occurring theme with this car. worried if i spend the $500-$900 to have it repaired it will do it again down the road in a year or two or 30,000 miles.

 While starting my car and attempting to back up, it started sputtering, wouldn't reverse, and then the engine reved and it lurched backwards. i immediately hit the brake and put it in park. the engine altered between sputtering, lunging, and then it reved on it its own while in park and with no acceleration. i turned off the ignition, waited a minute, and started it again, this time with no problem. about 2 weeks later, the same incident happened while i was trying to pull forward in a parking lot but this time the engine kept stalling. i had it towed to the auto dealer who tried recalibrating a computer sensor but warned that it may be the throttle body but that would be very unusual. after another incident, the dealer replaced the throttle body (this past monday) but same incident happened last night, this time leaving us stranded in the middle of a four lane road. after several attempts at turning off and then turning on the car, we were able to hobble to a parking lot where we turned off the car and sat for 5 minutes. it was then fine, and we drove home. we did notice that the a/c would cut in and out on its own during the 30 minute trip home. it is the shop again as i write this.

 My mom owns a 2006 ford freestyle. it had a throttle body failure that cost her $835 to replace on 7-21-2011. this is outragous!!!! it's understandable that mechanical things will fail but this is an obvious safety issue. the car began to surge and lurch forward, mainly when parking. my mom actually bumped the front of the car port!!! the vehicle also died multiple times while sitting at red lights over the course of about 3 weeks... when she needed to take off, it stalled and would not accellerate... this is an extreem safety hazard and ford needs to make this right! reimburse my mom! she's on a fixed income and can't afford to pay for ford's mistakes, not to mention she could have had an accident causing damage to her vehicle or someone else, or worse yet personal injury to her or someone else!!!!!! do the right thing... step up an recall this throttle body... there is already a tsb out on it.. (05-25-13) so it's a known issue. what will it take to get this fixed?... does someone have to get hurt or killed????

 First sign was when leaving a mall parking space; placed car into reverse to back up, motor surged and car leaped backwards unexpectedly nearly striking a passing car and pedestrians. put transmission into'd' to pull back into space and transmission dash indicator illuminated and the car died. various iterations of restarting the engine, putting the car in gear and then either surging under full power or dying until we got to an auto parts store to see if they could read any codes for the problem. the shop was very nice but unable to determine anything conclusive so we limped along to the nearest ford dealership where we learned the throttlebody had failed.

 I have a 2006 ford freestyle i pulled off the interstate stopped at a stop sign when i went to pull away the car lunged forward almost hitting another car and died 3 times the check engine light came on. i went to pull back on the interstate and had no power had my foot to the floor and could barely get to 30 mph. i am an automotive tech took the car to work and pulled the codes po61b internal control torque calculation and p2106 throttle control system. after researching the codes i found that alot of people have experienced the same problem with the same codes and had to replace the throttle body. i am replacing the throttle body but realize this is a common and dangerous problem that ford is not taking care of or even acknowledging there is a problem. knowing that the throttle bodies were on back order not long ago means to me they are in big demand so there must be a problem.

 We purchased a brand new 2006 ford freestyle in march, 2007. on june 14, 2011, and to a lesser extent, periodically since vehicle purchase, the vehicle's engine surged while my foot was on the brake pedal; the vehicle failed to accelerate to normal speed; and, it acted like it didn't want to shift into next gear. the june 14, 2011 occurrence was the worst one, plus, the wrench light came on. our local ford dealership diagnosis is that the throttle body needs to be replaced...at only 37,200 miles. repair estimate from the dealership to replace the part is $836.48. dealership also determined that an engine mount bracket/gasket needs to be replaced for cost of $424.00; rear brakes will be needed within 5,00 miles for $374, if new rotors are needed; and, new battery is needed now for a cost of $138...all this at only 37,200 miles. we foolishly purchased an extended warranty when we bought the vehicle. ford tells us that the warranty only covers the power train, and since the throttle body is considered to be electronic, the warranty will not apply. we were led to believe that it was a bumper-to-bumper extended warranty when we agreed to purchase the warranty. we are very unhappy campers! no more extended warranties for us. we believe that ford should be responsible at least for the throttle body replacement, in full. we are afraid to drive the vehicle now, and even when it is repaired we will still be afraid because of the history of the freestyle problems that we have read about online. please help! thanks.

 2006 ford freestyle sudden acceleration- a few months ago my 2006 ford freestyle began accelerating, usually going from park to reverse, even while my foot was on the brake. i have to press down on the brake hard to keep the car from lurching forward. once in drive, there are no problems. no shops have been able to identify a problem even though the wrench light comes on and the car has stalled a couple of time. it never seems to have the problem at the repair shop. internet research indicates this is a throttle body problem that ford is well aware of but hasn't taken action on to educate consumers or mechanics. i've learned to compensate by always starting the car with my foot firmly on the brake, but i won't let anybody else drive my car. desparate to get repaired. this problem is rampant based on internet complaints. in fact, the last mechanic said he had another ford freestyle with the same problem which is what prompted me to get on the internet. why isn't ford doing something before someone gets hurt?

 My vehicle when in gear and foot on the brake lunges forward and backwards when in reverse, causing me to almost hit 2 pedestrians and several vehicles when i am at a complete stop. this occurs daily when my vehicle is in the drive or reverse position. i have notified the ford dealership and they said it is the throttle body and the part is on backorder. this problem is very scary because i am afraid of hitting someone or something. this has been happening since i bought the vehicle in 2008 and i did take it back to the dealership where i bought it and they would do something to it and it would stop for awhile but would start doing it again and this has been like this for 2 years now. i cannot let my teenagers drive my vehicle because i am afraid they will not be able to stop the vehicle when it starts lunging forward again.

 I own a 2006 ford freestyle which had a throttle body issue. the issue caused the engine to accelerate when the transmission was engaged in drive or reverse and the brake is pressed. the acceleration also happened while driving on the highway on one occasion as i began to slowdown in traffic. as a result of the failure, one of the problem lights illuminated, it was the wrench shaped light indicating an issue. the issue occurred almost daily. the problem was remedied by replacing the throttle body, after a four-month backordered wait.

 My wife and i own two 2006 ford freestyles. one has approximately 70,000 miles and the other 50,000 miles. right about the same time in april/may 2009 both vehicles started have engine problems. both were taken to ford dealership for repair -- they replaced the throttle body on both vehicles. each repair was covered by an extended warranty of 100,000 miles. the problem with the throttle body caused the engine to rev up and want to take off on its own -- even with the brake pedal pushed down. other times the engine would just shut off. either of these caused potentially dangerous situations. although neither vehicle was involved in any accident due to this factory installed equipment the potential for serious accident/injury was great. both vehicles have been repaired and are running well -- for about $200.00 dollars each for diagnostics. the old parts are no longer available. *tr

 While curbside at the airport my 2006 ford freestyle started to accelerate by itself. and nearly plowed into the car and pedestrians in front of me. when the acceleration subsided i repositioned my feet (left foot brake, right foot on floor) because i thought my foot was on both the brake and the accelerator. a minute or so later the car did it again, i put the car in neutral and turned it off. when my passengers were re loaded i started the car and while leaving the airport noticed the car was very sluggish. i took it to the dealer that day. after more than two days, lots of phone calls (about what might be the problem but we're not sure) and a lot of negotiation between the dealer and the extended warranty provider it was determined that the electronic throttle body was the culprit but the part was on nationwide back-order in fact we have another freestyle out in the back that has been waiting for a month. the tune changed considerably when the dealer found out that i was not only considering a legal path for resolution, but my wife was a consumer cop for the state where we live. the parts (2)were found in california and air-freighted to our dealer who promptly fixed both cars that day. i was charged $550+ for the repair(neither ford or the 100k mile extended warranty provider covered the work). it seems that others have had this exact problem too, how many does it take? does someone have to get killed or injured for some one to figure out that this type of incident can't possibly be a normal wear and tear or consumer caused problem. *tr

 I have a 2006 ford freestyle with less than 15,000 miles. while driving north bound on interstate 75 between mile marker 101 and 128 the gas tank was punctured. what punctured the gas tank is unknown but there was a small area of burring and the tank cracked approx. 4 inches releasing fuel. the gas tank and liner failed by what appears to be a small impact. consequence was release of fuel (full tank). fortunately, there was no adverse outcome other than replacing the tank and fuel... the tank is being replaced. i will retain the damaged tank for further inspections. if the nhtsa would like to examine the tank please contact me and i will provide it to you. 1. normal highway driving/debris should not puncture the tank and create this unsafe condition. had the fuel ignited then serious bodily harm or death could have occurred. 2. looking at the gas tank layout there is no protection from any type of debris e.g. skid plate, fabrication materials, etc. this makes the gas tank vulnerable to puncture potentially creating an unsafe condition. 3. the tank is non self-sealing to minimize the release of fuel. 4. there is an inadequate heat shield in place to prevent fuel from reaching the exhaust and igniting. 5. there is a potential workmanship issue with the gas tanks as they may be too brittle and unable to withstand the impact as tested. as there was no indication of a collision in which ruptured the gas tank. there was also only a very small area of burring that resulted in a significant crack to the fuel tank. *nm

 Got in my car to go home one afternoon and it cranked but when i pressed the gas pedal it wouldn't move. had to call a tow truck and have it towed to a shop. my car spent 2 weeks in the shop and it was determined it was the throttle body. i was told by my mechanic that this is a common problem on the freestyle and is usually one of the first major repairs needed.

 We own a 2006 ford freestyle and starting having issues with sudden acceleration within two years after purchase. at first, it was a sudden jolt in reverse only, then it was sudden acceleration while at a stop light or going into reverse after coming out of parking and then sudden acceleration while slowly turning or stopping for people walking by in parking lots. we notice it acts up much more during the summer when the air conditioner is on full blast and the car will actually suddenly die on the highway with the check engine lights turning on at us. it is not safe for my family of four children under six nor for people on the streets who might be hit accidently from throttle body issues. sometimes, it is difficult to stop the car from accelerating! we have cleaned the throttle body ourselves to see if it would help and it did for only a short time. we are now faced with replacing the throttle body which is a 700-1000 repair! this is not a new issue or rare issue from what we have researched online with other freestyle owners. this is a safety issue that must be fixed asap before people get hurt!!

 2006 ford freestyle is lunging very aggresively. i will put the vehicle into reverse and as soon as i let off the brake the car suddenly revs and lunges. when i put the car into drive the vehicle suddenly lunges out of control. this also occurs when i make a stop. the car wants to lunge forward aggresively. today it finally lunged and then died. this is a very serious situation. if my child would have been walking in front of the vehicle he would have been hit. something needs to be done about this situation. this is a defect on ford's part.

 2006 ford freestyle 85,000 miles. car began lurching forward when in drive and backward when in reverse at about 70,000 miles. june 2010 car lunged forward in a parking lot and almost hit car in front of me. took to dealership next day and for $920 they replaced the throttle body in one day. never mentioned they were aware of the issue.

 Throttle body again. second time in having 06 ford freestyle that the throttle body needs to be replaced. car will lunge forward with no warning and stall out. almost rear-ended another car and on 5/1/10 when pulled out in intersection, it lunged forward and stalled, cars were coming from both directions. near miss.

 Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford freestyle. while driving the vehicle at speeds ranging from 25 to 55 mph and attempting to apply the brakes it began shaking and vibrating. while steering the vehicle and turning, the tires rubbed the inner walls. the fuel gauge and speedometer failed on 2 occasions after adding the maximum amount of fuel to the vehicle. the failure mileage was 320. the dealer was unable to diagnose the vehicle on six occasions. the current mileage was 1,300. *ak
