So many issues with the transmission not sure where to start. car was running fine yesterday and then today car had the wrench light on and lost power on the expressway at about 75 mph. turned the card off and the light was still on but at least i got partial power. the car shudders and won't shift and sometimes when i push the gas pedal nothing happens. when i am stopped car will lunge forward even with my foot on the brake. called several ford dealerships and they said they are not certified to work on that type of trans but they will replace it for 7000.00!!!! i have read so many posts with the exact same issue. why is there no recall?? i could have been killed!!! or worse my kids could have been hurt. doesn't anyone care enough to do something? *tr

My 2006 ford lunges. it also loses power and cuts off while trying to drive. this happens everywhere and anywhere. even if my foot is on the brake it will lunge forward or backward it does no discriminate. this happens all the time. it's also worse when the air conditioning is on. this could potentially be a serious situation on the highways and local streets, if the car is just cutting off while driving down the road. lunging forward/backward could become potentially serious as well. i really hope that ford takes responsibility for these issues. especially since they stopped making the freestyle what 3 yrs later. it seems to me that they realized there was some kind of an issue why else would they quit making it? i have to say other than that major problem of lunging and going through rear brakes the car itself is wonderful and not my first ford. i love ford vehicles, unfortunately i am a little disappointed with this one. if ford would take responsibility and fix it that would be great! i can't afford to fix it nor get another vehicle. i feel like i have a lemon on my hands. *tr

While backing up the car lunges when foot is still on the brake. car will occasionally lunge forward when pulling out of a parking spot or when stopped at traffic light or stop sign. very unsafe!!!!!! must make sure my foot is on the brake hard when stopped or be ready to quickly brake when backing up. the ac is sometimes on when this happens and the temperature is in the upper 80's. we live in colorado springs, co and 80 degree temp are pretty hot here. lately it has been in the 90 degree + range and the issue has been happening more. my wife mostly drives this car and our teenage daughter, new drive with a permit, is learning to drive, this is not safe!!!. please put pressure on ford to fix this safety item. seems like may others are having the same issue. will it take for someone to be seriously hurt or killed before this gets looked at? how many accidents major or minor has this caused? how many insurance rates have increased because of these accidents? please do something about this!!!!!!! *tr

My 2006 ford freestyle lunges/surges when going from park to drive or park to reverse. vehicle has been doing this for at least 1 year .it is very scarey and unsafe for my teenage driver who is just learning to drive. i have also replaced the brakes pads and rotors twice already. the brakes wear out very quickly around 15,000 miles. last i replaced the transmission at 100,000. i bought a used 2007 transmission to save some money. now i am being told that my transmission is bad again. it is once again slipping and i have only driven 15,000 since the transmission was replaced with one od only 56,000 miles.

Rear brakes wear out unusually fast, in the first 18,000 miles. sound ford will not do anything about this issue either. this is the 2nd time i have had to replace my rear breaks and rotors that were completely ruined in 38,000 miles of usual driving. i have also experienced unsual tire wear. the insides of the tires go bald with in the first 35,000 miles even with routine servicing and rotations.

Excessive brake dust. was informed that rear brakes were down to metal. rotors were so worn they could not be turned.replaced rear brakes and rotors.took car in for routine check and mentioned that the rear bar that the 3rd row of seats holds onto was rusting. asked if they could check for leaks and if other people were complaining. they found no leaks and said i must have gotten the car excessively wet on the inside (no!). i also complained about a sour moldy smell coming from the air conditioner...again no solution.had to replace tires becuase they wor out 'prematurely'. was told it was my driving. dealership would not do anything under warranty or offer help. tires had abnormal wear on the inside(toeing?) then i was getting very poor gas mileage and needed a routine check and oil change again. i took it in and was informed i had no rear brakes left. the rear calipers were failing to release. once again brake assembly was replaced. took car in for and engine noise/whine 3 different times and had a tech ride with me. each time they heard nothing and did nothing. took car in for a loud noise coming from rear wheel along with a burning smell. tech rode with me and did not hear any noise from tire but did comment about the engine noise/whine. i was finally relieved that he heard it and i told him no other tech has seemed to hear it. car was looked at and found that rear driver tire bearings were shot and wheel was loose(very dangerous they said) they had to order parts. when i asked what they found out about the engine whine that the tech also heard, i was told there was no mention of it but they would look into it before i came to pick up my car. next i got a phone call saying the shop foreman didn't hear the noise, so there was nothing they could do.now for the last two days my car has started really rough and then died. yesterday it surged forward and the wrench light turned on. i took it in and now they say the code says there is a transmission failure!? 45,000. *tr

I bought my 2006 ford freestyle with 23,000 miles within 4 months i started experiencing a whining noise. the noise started getting louder and louder, i then started to feel the car wanting to accelerate while my foot was on the brake, this happened about 5 times. the car would stall and the wrench light would come on. i would turn it off and let it cool a little and it would start right up again. the problems continued especially in the heat. i live in miam florida and it was just about everyday that this would happen. then finally it happened, the car just died on me. i want to point out that i took the car to the dealer with 30,000 and they told me there was nothing they could do because no lights came on. i let them service the car and they told me everything was ok. the dealer told me i needed a new transmission. i could not believe it, he also told me the throttle body went and intake manifold had went as well. i aked if there was anything ford could do they said i would have to call. ford was the worst at customer service that i ever experienced. they said no to everything becuase i was out of warranty. after spending almost $6,000 the dealer told me that ford was now giving 100,000 mile warranty for remanufactured transmissions. to this day, i have replaced brakes, rotors, another throttle body, front engine mount and the car is now experiencing a whining noise again. i still have 15,000 warranty left on last tranny i put in. i'm thinking they may have to put a new tranny in again. ford knew about this recall and how dangerous it was and never asked for a voluntary recall, i am also very dissapointed with the nhtsa. there have been thoudsand of complaints and they also did nothing about.

I have always owned fords however this is by far the scariest ford car ever and to me the unsafest!! i purchased my ford freestyle back in october 2010. ever since then my car seems to have a mind of its own. when i am completely stopped my car will automatically lunge forward and even stall when i am turning my wheel. i have a 5 year old child who i drive everyday to school in this death trap and it scares me to death. i have tried talking to my ford dealership about this since the car was like this when i bought it but of course they want me to spend all this money i do not have on repairs...after internet research it appears there are hundreds of people that have the same problem with this vechicle. why isn't anyone doing something about this to protect the consumer? it is very scarey and i do not understand why the car is lunging forward and backwards if backing up when my foot is clearly on the brake as well as stalling . i hope someone will do something about it before someone ends up in an accident or even dead because of this!! that would be a serous lawsuit i am sure. this is a serious issue please please do a recall on it now if not for me for the sake of someones life who is driving one of these unsafe vechicles.

I was transporting my children on a hot day. we were idling with the a/c on. the vehicle was not in motion. i had my foot pressed firmly on the brake. the vehicle then lunged forward several feet. there were no impacts or accidents, but as i began to accelerate, the vehicle acted as if it was going to stall. it was sputtering and kept lunging as if i had removed my foot from the clutch the check engine / wrench light came on and the vehicle died. i tried to restart the vehicle multiple times, and it did eventually turn back on, but the vehicle was sluggish and continued lunging. i brought the vehicle to our local ford dealer, jackson ford-mercury tag #540, as it was still under warranty. they checked the air conditioner and found nothing wrong. i took the vehicle back to the same dealer a short time later for the same problem and again they could find no problems. as the season changed, the problem cleared up. we were no longer using the a/c. the following summer, same conditions, same problem. i took it to a different ford dealership big valley lincoln ford mercury ro # 625097 and explained the problem and provided the repair tag number. after performing a mult-ipoint inspection, not once, but twice, and a diagnostic hvac system check, they also could find no problem to repair. concerned that our warranty was getting ready to expire, we asked them to document the incident. we've taken the vehicle to many local mechanics as well. i am unsure of which parts are actually faulty because the vehicle has never been able to be diagnosed. we don't utilize the a/c because it causes the vehicle to stall and fails to cool the air properly anyway. i believe my vehicle is encountering the same defect as many of the others described up here and i think that ford should repair the defect, as i and many other consumers purchased these vehicles in good faith.

Prematurely worn rear brake pads and rotor damage. ford initially had a recall on the rear brake pads due to faulty material composition. since the pads were replaced by recall i have experienced a similar failure on two other occasions. the first failure was about 17000 miles, followed by 33000 miles and at 47000. the vehicle is currently at 67000 miles and the rear pads and one rotor have failed again. front brake pads where replaced as a courtesy by the ford dealer at 47000 and front rotors have never been replaced. i spoke with the locak ford dealership regarding the premature wear and they aknowledge that a problem exists but ford has not recalled or corrected anything. as a result of that conversation i contacted ford customer care and was contacted by an investigator to discuss the brakes among other problems. the investigator did not aknowledge that the brake wear was a problem and only stated that it was a wear item. when asked why the rear brakes failed at a rate significantly faster than the front brakes the investigator refused to comment.

Car lunged forward with foot firmly on the brake, this also happened when the car was in reverse. this lunging stopped when the brake was applied, this has happened several times since then.

My husband was stopped at a red light. all of a sudden the car just went forward through the light, even though he was holding the brake pedal down. thankfully no cars hit us. we thought perhaps it was just something weird that happened. i continued to drive it and it happened two more times. i called ford. they told me that there was no recall and i should take it to a ford dealership to have it tested. the dealership said that they had had this happen on quite a few of their cars, and that even though the computer didn't show anything, they recommended that we have a new throttle put in the car. we did and paid $800. to have it done. we had also talked to a different mechanic who also confirmed that he had quite a few fords come in with this same problem. ford told us that they would not pay for it unless there was a recall. they car was not safe to drive, therefore we paid for the repair.

The car is surging and lunging (see pending investigation from may 2011). also, when running the a/c it starts to go off and on by itself, then the engine starts to shut off and on, and all gages go to zero, like the car is losing power.
12/16/200959000
When placed in reverse the auto would surge without warning, as if the fuel pedal were applied. this also did it when going from reverse to forward. had to keep foot firmly on the brake at all times or risk an accident. car became very difficult to drive when this occurred. at 80,472 miles. engine check light stayed on after another surge problem that stalled the auto. ray skillman ford in greenwood, in determined it was the throttle body. it was replaced and while the service man drove the car, the entire a/c unit went out. they put a new clutch & compressor. after calling several ford dealerships, there has been a huge backorder of these throttle body's. capital city ford is installing two a day the same with ray skillman ford.

I was approaching an intersection at about 1-5 mph and pressing the brakes, then the car lunged forward and moved 2 to 4 feet (at no point i pressed the gas pedal). after that, the gas pedal did not work, and i had to restart the car to be able to move it again. this all happened at an intersection. i believe this is a very dangerous problem. with the lunge i could have hit a pedestrian. with the need to re-start at the middle of a congested intersection, i could have been hit by a car moving in the opposite direction.

We purchased a brand new 2006 ford freestyle in march, 2007. on june 14, 2011, and to a lesser extent, periodically since vehicle purchase, the vehicle's engine surged while my foot was on the brake pedal; the vehicle failed to accelerate to normal speed; and, it acted like it didn't want to shift into next gear. the june 14, 2011 occurrence was the worst one, plus, the wrench light came on. our local ford dealership diagnosis is that the throttle body needs to be replaced...at only 37,200 miles. repair estimate from the dealership to replace the part is $836.48. dealership also determined that an engine mount bracket/gasket needs to be replaced for cost of $424.00; rear brakes will be needed within 5,00 miles for $374, if new rotors are needed; and, new battery is needed now for a cost of $138...all this at only 37,200 miles. we foolishly purchased an extended warranty when we bought the vehicle. ford tells us that the warranty only covers the power train, and since the throttle body is considered to be electronic, the warranty will not apply. we were led to believe that it was a bumper-to-bumper extended warranty when we agreed to purchase the warranty. we are very unhappy campers! no more extended warranties for us. we believe that ford should be responsible at least for the throttle body replacement, in full. we are afraid to drive the vehicle now, and even when it is repaired we will still be afraid because of the history of the freestyle problems that we have read about online. please help! thanks.

Vehicle will accelerate while foot is on the brake pedal. happens mostly when backing but will happen also when in drive. seems to happen as wheel is turned slightly in either direction, but not for sure. also seems to happen more in very hot weather or after vehicle has been driven for a while. acceleration is minor to moderate and happens unexpectedly. ford reprogrammed computer last summer but still occurs. vehicle is also wearing out right rear brake faster that other brakes.

My ford freestyle has had rear brake problems since i purchased it new from beartooth ford in hardin, mt. the first time the dealer replaced/repaired the rear brakes while the car was under warranty. the right rear brake was dragging to the extent that the right rear wheel would get so hot you could not touch it creating a danger of fire. this problem has continued each time after it was repaired. the most recent repair was made by the ford dealership in missoula, mt. at a cost of $500.00 after the brakes went out again, we took the car back to the missoula ford dealership and asked them to repair/replace the brakes. they refused to do so. so now i have an unsafe vehicle with only three (3) brakes. this problem is clearly a problem with the design of my car.

Tl- the contact owns a 2006 ford freestyle. while driving approximately 35 mph the vehicle accelerated on its own. the failure would occur continually. the vehicle stopped functioning after experiencing the failure multiple times. the vehicle was not taken into the dealer for repairs. the vehicle had the same before and it was taken to the dealer for repair of the throttle body and was covered under warranty. the manufacturer was contacted and stated the repairs would not be covered this time because the warranty had expired. the approximate failure mileage was 30,000. ds

Front and rear brakes on 06 ford freestyle. i have had to replace the brake rotors on this car or had to have them resurfaced 4 time since ipurchase the car. at 39,000 miles they did a tsb on the rear brakes, at 79,000 the replaced pads, resurfaced rotors, and cleand and lubed the slides and pins, at 85,000 miles they replaced the rear rotors and resurfaced the front rotors again, at 96,905 they replaced the front rotors. why are there problems with the brakes on these cars? what are thy doing to help the consumer with the cost of repairs?

Rear brakes on my 2006 ford freestyle there was a recall on the rotors and pads and they was repaired by ford at 40k but now this is the third set with only 91k since then and it time for ford to do something about it look like this is a on going thing with the freestyle and 500. *tr

Anti lock brake pump defective, luckily discovered before serious injury. back brakes already replaced one time on ford 2006 freestyle. no dashboard indicators ever came on, only realized the problem because the brake pedal did not feel right while using brakes. ford needs to check this out and issue a recall before someone is injured. we were just lucky. *tr

We purchased a used ford freestyle just over 18 months ago and have had to have the brakes replaced twice...there have been no accidents involved with these yet but we have a small son and i take care of them before there is a failure...and from what i have read there have been more than a few ford owners who have had problems with this... *tr

06 ford freestyle, 26,000 miles. bought it new. drive conservatively. grinding noise in right rear tire, expect it to be brake since it is when i apply the brake. have smelled burning smell twice when starting car, don't know why. engine 'revs' when first started when cold, need to keep foot on brake or it takes off. took it to dealer once, they couldn't identify problem said bring back if it happens again. that was before the brake grinding noise, which has been in the last few days. will take to dealer this week. *tr

The brakes and rotors of this vehicle are pre-maturely wearing having to be replaced at 19k by the dealer. i now have 31k and the replaced set is already 60% used. this concerns me greatly as the really makes the car unsafe. tires on this vehicle are also wearing faster then normal. will need replacement soon. *tr

Had a flat tire on my 2006 ford freestyle, awd, ltd and installed the space saver tire. while driving, the speedometer failed to operate, all fault indicators on the dashboard illuminated, and the transmission proceeded to erratically up and down shift. went directly to my local ford dealers service department wherein told by service advisor that this was not normal. told service advisor that i thought it had to do with the space saver tire. there was no information in the owner's manual to the vehicles eradicate behavior. later, service advisor reported that this was normal behavior with the space saver tire and the vehicles abs sensors. i disagreed on the normal behavior since i consider my speedometer a safety device - and since the space saver tire is speed limited, this made the vehicle behavior questionable. *tr

The rear brakes on my 2006 ford freestyle awd limited are completely gone after only 25,000 miles. they were suddenly metal on metal. before i knew what was happening the car is in a near non-drivable state. ford did not inform me of any brake problems. i read others complaints online and then contacted my dealership. they told me there is an open recall and i could receive a one time repair. by repair i assume they mean new brake pads and hopefully rotors. i'm wondering if ford is actually going to address the problem which i assume is the calipers. i haven't heard anyone say that they are. i'm sure i'll soon need another rear brake repair and what then? *tr

Since we first purchased the car, we have been complaining that our tires have been wearing out too quickly, show unusual signs of wear. after the third visit to the dealers, i contacted ford to express my frustration regarding the tires and that fact that i had to continually replace these tires at my cost ? it was unusual that tires were wearing out with less than 20,000 miles on the vehicle. ford motor company denied any responsibility for the tire, suggesting that the unusual wear was a factor that was being caused roads within new hampshire and improper maintenance and our failure to keep our tire aligned and balanced. on august 26th, 2007 - my car began to experience some a wobbling in the car as if the car was out of alignment - with a five minute period, it started to feel like we had a flat tire. i pulled to the side of the road and inspected the tires on the vehicle, which did not appear to be flat. again i proceeded down the road and within the next 500 my car began to experience some a sever wobbling, violently shaking the car. again, i got out of the car to inspect the tires assuming that this was being caused being caused by a flat tire. again, all of the tires appeared to be fine, who ever i did notice that left rear passenger tire appeared to wobble when i pushed on it with my foot. assuming that the tire might be lose, i proceed to jack up the vehicle in an effort to determine if the tire was potentially loose what i discover, was that the tire was fine, instead, the entire left assemble (tire, disk brake assembly and the rotor) were coming off the car? *tr

I have had nothing but issue after issue. it started with my brakes failing like several others that i have read. it now surrounds my 6 cd player that either melts or won't play. i have had it into the ford dealership a few times to no avail. on 03-12-08 the electrical panel only lights up partially, and after shaking the front dash board a few time all lights popped on. i have talked to service managers and they have done what they have the ability to do. this vehicle is a 2006 ford freestyle and i would not recommend it to anyone for purchase. *tr

2006 ford freestyle 2 wheel drive. rear brakes prematurely wearing out. replaced twice before 28,000 miles. complete rotors as well. front brake pads are cracked and rotors grooved. 31,000 total miles on vehicle. ford says brakes failing due to cars exposure to moisture and that the pads swell causing drag. not logical and do not believe it. many others have same issue with ford freestyles. *tr

While accelerating up inclines, at highway speeds, with and without cruise control, traction control and power train wrench light would illuminate and the transmission disengaged. this happened on three occasions. dealer initially unable to diagnose, then reports that it is an abs module failure, which is not covered under extended warranty, because it is not considered part of the power train. after abs module replacement, the engine light began to illuminate, this is as yet, unresolved. *jb

Following recommended maintenance, i needed to replace rear brake pads at approximately 44,000 miles and a caliper. my service station called multiple parts stores to get the caliper and was told that this is a daily request. i have never replaced brake parts this early in the life of any vehicle i have ever owner in my 40 years of driving cars. i believe that this is a serious safety issue that should be recalled. *tr

I have three complaints regarding my vehicle. i purchased a 2006 freestyle in june of 2006. in october 2006 my son and i were involved in an accident. there was extensive front end damage resulting in over $10,000 in repairs. the car jumped over two ravines, both times severely impacting the ground. almost the entire front part of the car had to be replaced, including the radiators, grill, bumper, etc. the air bags did not deploy. also, i have had to have the tires replaced two times making the latest the third set of tires on this vehicle. the set of tires i just had replaced were 60,000 mile continental touring tires. they had uneven, choppy, wear and were approximately 8 months old. i am on the second set of brakes, both front and rear and have had the rear rotors replaced.. the vehicle currently has approximately 39,000 miles on it. the premature, uneven tire wear and the brake wear are excessive compared to any other vehicle i have ever owned. i feel very fortunate that the accident we were involved did not result in bodily injury for either me or my 22 year old son. *tr

I purchased my 2006 ford freestyle awd new, and at 22,388 miles, the rear brakes needed to be replaced. now, at 30,495 miles, the rear brakes and rotors need to be replaced and a pint of brake fluid needed to be added. i find this totally excessive. *ak

My wife and i took our 2006 ford freestyle into the dealer for a routine oil change and checkup. we were informed that the rear break pads were down to 3 percent. i expressed surprise, since we had the car only for one year (18,800 miles), and asked how that could be. the service rep only indicated that it would be due to how we drive. later that day, i found out there was a tsb issued on that very problem.

I have a 2006 ford freestyle with 16,000 miles and i have been told that i not only have to replace the rear brake pads but the rotors as well. i researched the internet and there are many other complaints like this for this particular car. this is way too early for brake pads to be wearing out and if it was normal wear and tear the front pads should need replaced since 70% of the braking occurs there. something needs to be done because ford is unwilling to acknowledge the issue. *jb

I have two big problems with my ford, first i've had it for a year and a half and replaced the front and rear brakes four times. the rotors were supposed to have been replaced before i got the suv. for over a year i haven't had no help by ford, during the same time i've had a loud knocking noise from either the engine or transmission, they wouldn't even look at that problem. for being a 2006 there is so many things wrong with it and spend double in gas i'm very unsatisfied with my freestyle. *tr
