Defect SummaryVehicle description: passenger vehicles equipped with manual transmissions. if a vehicle is parked with the parking brake not fully applied and not in first gear, as directed in the owner guide, and the self adjustment pawl subsequently skips one or two teeth, the vehicle could move on some grades.
Consequence SummaryThis could result in unintended vehicle movement and a vehicle crash without prior warning.
Corrective SummaryDealers will modify the parking brake control and install a plate or over-bracket to the control to lock the self adjust mechanism in position following adjustment.
NotesOwner notification began november 28, 2000.owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact ford at 1-800-392-3673.also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

 Recall 00 v 349 000/parking brake pawl: dealer dick milham, eastern, pa, phone# 610/253-9191took from 16 aug 01 to above incident date to complete recall repairs. *ak consumer states that after parking brake control assembly was installed, the parking brakes failed. vehicle pulls right and weaves from side to side, there is a vibration felt underneath the driver seat at all speeds, on one occasion while driving in the rain, consumer loss control of the vehicle, dealer rebalanced all ires and realigned front, steering wheel was off center. *slc

 Vehicle was parked on a slight incline in residential neighborhood, parking brake engaged, 5-speed transmission in gear. vehicle remained stationary for at least 5 minutes. sometime later (within period of one hour or so) parking brake failed and vehicle rolled down lengthy hill, crossing residential street and crashing front into a large tree. car was declared a total loss.
