| The agency, particularly in recent months, has been informed of incidents involving allegations of personal injury and death claimed to have been caused by safety defects and failures to conform to minimum federal motor vehicle safety standards (fmvss) on rental car vehicles for which a safety recall to remedy the safety defect or noncompliance had allegedly not been performed prior to the rental car company's lease of the vehicle.nhtsa understands that there is presently a petition before the federal trade commission (ftc) seeking to prohibit at least one rental car company from renting vehicles on which safety recall campaign remedies remain outstanding.the purpose of this audit query (aq) is to investigate recall remedy completion by rental car companies on the above-listed safety recall campaigns.these campaigns were chosen due to their inclusion of vehicles used in the rental market.this information is expected to provide the agency an indication of how completely and how quickly rental car fleets, in general or individually, perform necessary recall-related repairs or other remedies on the vehicles owned and then leased for use on the roadways.this aq is opened. | ||||||

| The speedometer constantly malfunctions, which makes it impossible to know what speed you are traveling. the speedometer will either stick at zero or be 10 to 15 mph off. this is common problem based on personal experience with many other 2005 mustang v6 drivers. the problem requires the entire instrument panel to be replaced (~$500-800), and ford continues to give us all the run-around. a simple search online also returns numerous postings about this problem. not knowing the speed in which you are traveling is a very unsafe driving condition. please look into this matter promptly and issue a recall. thanks for your help on this matter. | |||

| Tl- the contact owns a 2005 ford mustang. the contact stated that the instrument panel failed. the fuel gauge would read empty when the vehicle was full of gasoline. in addition, the speedometer and the oil level gauge failed. the contact took the vehicle to a mechanic for inspection and they informed him that the speedometer cables needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was notified and stated that the problem was common for all 2005 ford mustangs. the failure mileage was 75,000. kmj | |||

| Speedometer began working erratically at around 33,000 miles. speedometer needle would hover at 20mph when in idle and would jump up to 80mph and then work sometimes, other times it would stay at zero. have not noticed any changes due to weather (rain or temperature). compared speedometer reading with gps speed and found inconsistencies of up to 10 mph when the speedometer did work.speedometer complete failure at 33,500 miles. temperature gauge failed at same time. i'm concerned about not knowing how fast i am going. i drive pacing traffic which still is not safe. multiple incidents of instrument cluster failures reported on several ford mustang forums by current owners. fords solution is a new instrument cluster which costs about $700. apparently the problem is with the failing stepper motors that drive the gauges. this should be a recall item as it does present a serious & potentially deadly situation in not knowing what the car's actual speed is. instrument clusters usually don't fail much less at 33,000 miles! there is clearly a design flaw, please issue a recall on this item! | |||

| The speedometer, gas gauge and fueling guage on the instrument cluster has failed. today the lighting behind the panel started to go out. this is a known common problem on the mustang with several people reporting to ford without any response to the public. we paid good money for these cars and this is a safty hazard. i cannot afford the 600+ quote, so i'm using a gps to guage my speed and i'm having to track my mileage so i know when to get gas. ford needs to recall and fix before someone looses their life. | |||

| I first started having an issue with the temp gauge not working. now when it is cold outside my speedometer and rpm meter are not functioning until the car is warm enough. this first happened in feb 2010 but just one time. the first time it happened it was cold out and my speedometer went from 0 to 120 while stopped at a light then it stuck there and did not fix itself till the last part of that day. now it is happening again each time it is cold out the speedometer just stays below zero and so does the rpm untill i drive for 5 miles or so. it seems to only be happening when it is cold out about 65 and below wheather. temp gauge still not working and has been pointing at the bottom of the cluster since then. it still moves like it wants to work but never goes back to normal. ford says its the instument cluster but i am a single mother and can not aford to pay 700 to 1000 dollars to fix what i think should be a defect because i have seen a lot of people online posting about the same issue and they are all the 2005 models. someone help please. i love my car so much. i have had it for 5 years now and still love it. thanks. | |||

| I stopped at a rest stop on the pennsylvania turnpike and after restarting the car the temp gauge went all the way past hot but the engine was at normal temp. after the next three starts the gauge needle is past all readings and essentially pointing toward the bottom of the temp gauge, at nothing. i cannot tell if the engine is hot or cold or in the normal range. | |||

| Approximately a year ago, the speedometer and fuel gauges on my 2005 ford mustang started to malfunction. since then, they have been giving me false readings. examples include my fuel level will read at half a tank when i will actually be near empty, the more pressing issue however, is that my speedometer keeps giving me increadibly inaccurate readings, saying i'll be going 90 mph, when i'll really be going 20, or saying that i'm constantly going well over 150mph...even though my car will be parked and turned off. i have read that many other 2005 mustang owners are having this problem and being told they are having to pay anywhere from $500-600 for the repair when it is clearly ford motor's fault. i cannot afford to pay this, but i cannot afford to continue having to guess my speed either, it is unsafe, and potentially causing me to break the law by speeding. a recall order needs to be issued to save me and my fellow mustang owners from having to pay this excessie cost for a problem that is the maker's problem. | |||

| I just visited an online ford forum after being quoted $950 to repair my speedometer on my 2005 ford mustang. there are 4 pages of complaints detailing the same problem with the same vehicle. perhaps ford has avoided a recall by stating this does not effect safety or emissions. however, i got my first speeding ticket in over a decade 2 days after this problem began. speed control does effect safety, and apparently, if gone without repair, the non-working speedometer effects the transmissions ability to shift properly, which is also a safety hazard. i do not have $950 to repair this problem, nor can i afford to pay the costs of speeding ticket fines, and the rise in my cost of auto insurance due to these fines. please investigate this problem, as it appears to be a recurrent issue with this vehicle that ford should take responsibility for. | |||

| My son was driving his 2005 ford mustang yesterday when it burst into flames. he was pulling onto i 95 when the car suddenly shut off. he couldnt even make if off the driving area when it came to a complete stop. once it stopped black smoke started pouring out. he jumped out of the car and ran away from it when it burst into flames. the car was in perfect condition. never even missed an oil change. no warning signs of any issues. i am thankful that my son is safe but very upset at the ford car and have now read many ford fire issues that ford has not corrected. | |||

| I have a 2005 ford mustang, 4.0 and about 3 years ago the cluster started giving me problems, first the temp and fuel gauges stopped working all together. then my tachometer and speed started acting very erratic, showing that my tachometer was running above what it should as well my speedometer are going crazy. it shows me doing 120 when i'm doing 40, 55 etc.. why won't ford recall these clusters in all these cars, they know that they are bad. i almost had another heart attack when i got the price to replace the cluster from the local ford company, it was going to cost me $800.00, plus a diagnostic fee of $100.00. wow!!!! talk about greed!!!! | |||

| 2005 ford mustang leaking when it rains. i have read plenty of forms that a lot of people have this problem that no one knows why or how. if this is not corrected it could cause health problems due to mildew or fire due to the moisture. | |||

| Speedometer falure. the speedometer in my car started showing i was going 10mph while the car was not moving.i had to turn the car off and restart it to get a crorrect reading. eventually that didnt work. the speedometer would stay at 10 or 20mph till the car warmed up, then it worked fine. then it started staying at 20mph if the weather was cold.(at night it didnt work, in the daytime when it was warmer outside it worked).now the speedometer doesnt work at all any more. its permantly stuck on 55mph even when the car isnt running. i did reasurch on line and found a large amount of 05 mustang owners with the same exact problem. this is a safety issue and an obvious manufactorer defect and needs to be recalled to fix the problem. | |||

| When attempting to put gas in the vehicle you have to run it in real slow or the pump will shut off. it acts as if the tank is full even though it is almost empty. apparently the gas is pooling where the end of the pump releases the gas, there is a sharp slightly uphill right angle for the gas to travel and there is not enough room to for it to move through like other cars. the gas float stopped working as well, the gas needle is buried on the far right side of the guage inside the car, it is worthless, i believe these are related because they happened right around the same time. | |||

| When stopped suddenly the car will remain idle for about 30 seconds before it will kick back into gear. when this happens, car will roll backwards in drive. if you try to press the gas to force the car to move it will stall completely. car has been doing it since 2007. ford dealership could not find anything wrong with it. car currently has 44,000 miles on it. also gas, temp and speedometer gauges have started going crazy the last three weeks. | |||

| I have a 2005 ford mustang that the speedometer and odometer are not working. i have contacted ford motor company and they said that they have not had enough complaints to warrant a recall. apparently, they have not googled 2005 ford mustang instrument cluster and read all of the problems from other mustang owners. i am in the process of getting problem fixed but i am very dissatisified with the service that i am receiving from battlefield ford and ford motor co. | |||

| Was driving down the highway dec 23, 2008 when the entire electrical system on my 2005 ford mustang with 25,000 miles on it went completely dead. i purchased this slightly used mustang at a chrysler dealer six months ago and i purchased a top of the line extended warr, for $2000.00 when the vehicle was taken to the ford dealership my top of the line extended warr. did not cover the repairs due to the problem being a known factory defect. ford motor company was no help with the problem also due to the car being slightly over the 3 year warr but not over the 36,000 mile warr. i have done some research since then on the matter and found this problem is a big problem with ford . the internet is loaded with complaints from consumers with this exact same problem as mine. i would imagine driving down the highway at 65 miles per hr could be a catastrophe after losing all electrical power. ford has a tsb number for this problem, it is tsb 07-14-6. the problem is water is entering the cowl area on the front of car and getting to the electrical system and shorting the system out. to make things worse, after all denied response to fix factory defect, they handed me a bill for $508.00 to trouble shoot problem when i specifically told the dealership there was a tsb notice on this problem and the problem was that of the tsb 07-14-6. this is no way fair and something has to be done. *tr | |||
