I have had 2 of these tires blow out on me. the first happened about 3 weeks ago when the vehicle was sitting in my driveway. heard a loud boom at 10 minutes to midnight. went outside and found a gash in the tire on the side wall about 5 to 6 inches long. i had though some one had slashed the tire but the police officer said that the tire blew out from the inside. this tire was on the right front of the 99 ford ranger pick up. i had it replaced with the same tire brand and model. the second tire blew out 6/24 while i was driving at 65 mph on interstate 81. this was the left front tire. the side wall has completely separated from the tread. it looks like the separation starts right above the raised white lettering. one of the other 2 original tires has some of the white beginning to show above the white lettering. the tire that was replaced 3 weeks ago is also beginning to have some of the white that is under the black color of the tire show through right above the lettering. i have replaced all the tires on my vehicle with kelly tires. i have the bridgestone tires if you want them. *tr

For 3 days in a row i have had all 4 tires and the spare tires, making that 5 tires all together disintegrate. these were the wilderness ht size 14 from firestone. neither ford nor firestone want to be responsible. the steel belts have completely come through the tire and i have cracks and gouges in all 5 tires. noone wants to replace them because they are not part of the recall. i would like to know what the size of the tire has to do with it. obviously the way the tire is made is the problem. if they have to recall any of them than obviously the problem is with firestone. they should step up to the plate and take responsibility instead of trying to blame the consumer for their failures.

I just discovered that my 1999 ford ranger 4x4 off-road pickup, which was factory equipped with 16 tires, has a 15 spare. the engineers at ford have decided that mismatching tire sizes poses no adverse driving conditions for consumers. i feel that emergency handling with a 15 spare mounted on the front of my vehicle would be a challenge and potentially dangerous. i doubt that any tire manufacturers would recommend or support this practice. what did the dealership or ford motor company do when i brought this matter to their attention, you ask? absolutely nothing! it would be very interesting to see the results from some independent test conducted by a consumer group or from any tests that ford may have performed. could this be another recall in the making? i hope so, as i think that under certain conditions, driving a vehicle in this configuration could be very dangerous! this is not limited to the 1999 model year. ford has done this on the 2000, 2001 and is still doing it on their 2002 rangers equipped with 16 tires. apparently ford has no problem aggressively marketing and upgrading the standard 15 tires to optional 16 tires. they just dont see any need to upgrade the spare. i strongly disagree with fords attitude, as i see a real problem with driving mismatched tires even temporarily, and especially on the front of my vehicle.  Both times the tires just blew out on the highway. the 1st time it caused me to lose control and crash thru a chain link fence. the second time i spun around three times on the highway but no damage happened. i have called firestone and they will not help. they told me that it was a problem with the truck and ford says it is a problem with the tires. the tires before they blow will start thumping and within seconds they fall apart. *ak (tiresize: p225/70/r1)

Driving on i-17 nb north of carefree hwy at 75 mph. tire made a high pitched noise, which sounded like wind buffeting the truck bed. this lasted for about 10 seconds and then the right rear tire exploded and we were immediately driving on the rim. the entire sidewall separated from the tread. i had previously tried to get the dealer to replace the tires because of excessive vibration at high speed. it felt like the steel belts had separated. they offered to sell me new tires, but refused to replace these. unable to afford new tires i continued to drive with these. i have several pictures of the failed tire.*ak (dot number: w2uu tiresize: p225/70r15)

First off there has been no failure as yet. i couldn't get this far without saying there was. i just want to know what about the tires i have is any different than the ones being recalled? i still don't hear why they are failing. if as i suspect that it is the glue is there a different glue used on 16? i'm curious too about whether the tire is responsible for the feeling that the vehicle could roll very easily. i've noticed in a couple of circumstances of quick braking to avoid an accident that the vehicle like the center of gravity is somewhere above the top of the cab. this is not in a situation where the vehicle is sliding side ways either. it just feels like it could very easily flip over. i see no apparent flaws in the tires at this point and they seem to be wearing as well as any other tire on the market. they just don't feel right and didn't prior to the recall action. this is a fyi from me to you and at this point i hold little if any hope of these being recalled. what is your advice for me? thanks for your time. *ak (tiresize: p245/75r16)( dot number: tire size: p245/75r16 )

On october 4, 2000 my son was traveling at 30 mph on a residential street when his drivers side front tire assembly came off spindle causing him to go out of control and hit a van and a boat that were parked in front of a residence here in midland, texas. the police report that was filed backs up the following statements: while traveling east on stanolind street at 30 mph, in the 4400 block, the 1999 ford ranger's drivers side front wheel disengaged from the spindle causing it to pull left and along side a parked late model chevy van. the ranger had no brakes, and scraped along the entire length of the van, leaving scrape marks and axle grease, and tire rubber residue along the entire length of the van. the ranger hit the fender of the van and since driver was trying to steer away from the wreck, this allowed the front of the ranger to pull to the right back towards the street. at that point the entire wheel assembly came off and traveled 4 houses ahead of the now 3-wheeled ranger. after the wheel assembly exited, the knuckle hit the pavement and forced the ranger into the boat which was parked in front of the van. the boat trailer wheels were chocked and the impact of the ranger lifted the boat trailer into the driveway next door to where it was parked. when the midland police arrived,we all started discovering the parts lying in the street well before the crash site. it was determined that the hub cap came off first and rolled to the grass on the opposite side (4' north) of the van. the axle dust cover came off next and rolled to the opposite side of the street ( south), even with the boat. the axle bearing and seal were found 20' in front of the van so they probably came out next. the axle nut and keeper were found beside the boat in the grass. the wheel assembly referred earlier has everything still attached ( brake line, brake shoe, hub, lugs, caliper, everything!). i have kept these parts for your inspection in my home garage.. *ak

After the firestone tire recall started i checked my tires to see if they wer part of the recall and i noticed that they were not but what i did find were some stress fractures in the tire. i took it to the dealership where i purchased the truck and they stated the tire was defective and there was nothing they could do. i then took the tire to a firestone dealer and he also stated the tire was defective and i would need it replaced. he also stated that i would need to replace all of the tires due to the treadwear on my tires. i have leased the truck and the tires are supposed to last me the term of the lease. this is not a problem i caused myself and i feel it should be replaced free of charge which firestone refuses to do. at this point i am thinking of filing a class action suit agains firestone. i don't feel that the recall should be limited to the 15 tires when it probably effects all sizes. please advise me.  Driving to work at 6:00 am on main street in town at 40 miles an hr when i felt rear drivers side tire blow. immendiately pulled off road and tread was completely pulled away from the tire. put on spare tire and went on to work called local firestone dealer at 8:00 to report incident, they told me to bring it in and they would look at it. when i arrived they checked it and said it was not on the recall list, so they could do nothing about it, they said i would have to purchase a new tire. i questioned them concerning the low mileage and the warrenty that would be on the tire itself, they said i could have hit something and damaged the tire myself therefore, they could not cover the tire under the warrenty. the problem i have with that is that i did not hit anything then or in the past and my rim was not damaged a all, which was very clear to them. when i returned to work i called firestones toll free # direct the cust service rep advised me that since it was not on the recall list they could not do anything at this time, but in future if it did come on the recall list if i kept my tire and receipt they would refund my tire and money. i expressed my concern that i am still driving on the same tires, i was very surprised that i was not shown any concern in regards to this and was told to wait until it showed up on the recall list, i asked her how this got on the recall list she told me to contact this address. she said they do not investigate this, that the nhtsa would take care of it. all i want is for someone to look at my tires and assure me that they are safe and also refund my money considering the low milage that was on a 4 wheel drive truck that is suppose to have heavy duty tires..  Tire underwent complete sidewall faliure, and partial tread seperation while driving at normal highway speeds. entire sidewall of tire shreaded and seperated from tire, while there was partial tread seperation. other than replacement of tire and minor damage to rim, there was no apparent damage to vehicle, possibly due to the slow speed at which the truck was proceeding at. after contacting a local ford dealership(mullinax ford, now renamed maroone ford of margate), i was informed that while there was a recall on firestone wilderness 15 tires, the type on my truck, wilderness ht's, were not covered by the recall, and even though i had an equipment faliure, i would not get replacement tires for my vehicle, nor be compensated for the tire i had to replace at my own expense.( dot number: tire size: p225/70r15 )

I need to report a blow out/delamination of a firestone wilderness ht tire on a ford ranger truck. brief summary: a firestone wilderness ht tire blew out about three weeks ago on my ford ranger. my wife was driving on a texas state highway at the time the blow out occurred. the blow out was centered on the entire outside of the drivers rear tire. the remnants of the tire wrapped around the axle thus making it hard for my wife to bring the truck to a stop in a controlled fashion. i reported (7:45am cst; 7/20/00; 1-800-392-3673; an individual named david) the incident to ford motor company. he was appraised of the incident and informed me there was no recall. he gave me the following number to call firestone (1-800-847-3272). i called between 8-10am on 7/20/00. i spoke with a rude and combative person named rock. he said it was preposterous that the tires caused any problem. he said that my wife was awed by the state trooper that stopped to help her. [ the state trooper informed her of several deaths that have occurred in texas (perhaps bell county) involving blow outs of firestone wilderness tires. he suggested we check into the matter.] rock told me he wanted the troopers name and wanted to get the firestone legal team involved. it insults me that he would make disparaging remarks about my wife competencies. he never inquired about anyone's health nor took down any specifics (or vagaries) of the blow out. i have little faith in firestone's sincerity in this matter. sincerely, michael l. merchant, phd.( dot number: w2uu ipo tire size: p225 70r15 )

My tires haven't failed yet, but i wanted to advise you of my unusual tire wear, which may help you in your investigation. the door panel calls for the tires to be inflated at 30 psi, however, i got the truck from the dealer with the tires at 35 psi, the maximum recommended pressure on the tire's sidewall. i check the pressure every couple of months and they have never lost pressure, so i have never added air. i have always kept my tires inflated near the maximum level because i enjoy the improved fuel economy and a little road feel. anyway, on the rear (drive) tires there is much more wear in the middle of the tread, as if the tires were over-inflated. i have also begun to notice an intermittent waffling of the tires on smooth surfaces, which felt almost as if i had a flat. i wonder whether this uneven wear, with the two edges having more tread than the center, can cause this waffling effect, which, in turn, can cause the tread to separate from the rest of the tire? just trying to help. thanks. *ak( dot number: tire size: p22570r15 )

I was driving my ford ranger xlt 1999 pickup on a four lane road on 28 july 2001. the road was dry and air temperature was about 80 degrees farenheit. i was traveling at approximately 60 miles an hour when my passenger rear tire blewout. the whole tread separated rom the sidewalls. i took the tire to the firestone dealer and the employee didn't think it was a big issue and offered a replacement for $50. although this tire isn't one of the recalled ones, i feel that the failure i experienced is similar to the wilderness at failures. my concern is that these tires aren't safe. i replace all the tires on my pickup at my expense. fortunately, in this case the road traffic was light and i was able to coast to a stop withou applyin the brakes. the situation might have been differnent had the blowout occured five minutes later when i would have been on interstate 95 driving 70 miles per hour on a crowed road. i am submitting this report because there might be problem with this model of tires. i don't think the firestone dealership did their job and weren't interested in any of the details. dan pietz. *ak (dot number: w2uuipo 10 tiresize: p225/70r15)

Mail route includes sand, clay, & surfaced roads. i first heard a strange rubbing sound while on private sand road. i got out and observed a bubble on the sidewall of the right rear tire. i had no safe place to change the tire so i slowly drove the 1 mile back to the surfaced road. as i drove down the surfaced road, i noticed a lot of vibration in the rear of the vehicle. i pulled over to the shoulder to change the tire, as i was exiting the vehicle there was a load pop and the tire was flat! the service personnel at mike shad ford let me see the tire as they took it from the rim. there was a generous amount of rubber powder, the steel belts were shredded and rusty. it appeared to me that the tire had come apart from the inside out. myself, the technition, service advisor could not believe the tire had only 6700 miles on it. but it was original equipment. the dealer tire manager determined due to the amount of wear on the tread that i had to buy a new replacement. when i complained that the tire had to be defective he dissagreed. not defective, abused! he authorised a $15. adjustment and a free all wheel alignment. the second failure was nearly a year later but on the same wheel and same surfaced road. at 55mph i felt something slip or go loose in the rear end, followed by severe vibration. i pulled over to the shoulder immediatly, stopped, exited the vehicle and looked at the right rear tire. i found simular damage as the first time, a large bubble on the sidewall, smaller bubbles a ridges were the sidewall and tread meet, and a large bubble under the tread. this tire did not blow but the tire & wheel assembly were very hot! i had to let them cool about 25/30 minutes before i changed the tire. this tire is now my spare. at 19625 miles the original set of tires had to be replaced. with 14500 miles on this replacement set ford notes all 5 tires require replacement due to excessive wear. ford has told me they are warrentied for 50000 and firestone is responsi

Was on way to work just 15 miles away from home. had just exited i-70 driving at 65 mph in heavy traffic into downtown columbus, ohio. speed was reduced to 30-35 mph on city street when i heard air whistle and an immediate thumping from left rear of vehicle. changed tire and discovered steel belt was coming through middle of the tread. this was before announced firestone problems. i went to firestone dealer and had it replaced with a new tire of same model. dealer claimed it was probably a road hazzard. though, i did not run over anything or hit any obstacles before this occurred. i firmly believe my tire was defective from the factory. i consider myself very, very lucky considering i was at great risk to myself and other motorists only moments before.( dot number: tire size: 225-70-15 )

Tires developed a hop skitter bounce, momentary loss of traction, whatever, pushed thru curves, or during avoidance manuvers. the situation was somewhat ameliorated by putting the cold inflation up to max not fords' recommends... the garage had the patent obfuscation ready, it's the nature of the beast and would do nothing. the tires were exchanged for another brand all-weather m+s tire, which was speed rated (sustained 130+) traction a, temperature a ... during the trade-out it was discovered; by the tire dealer, that a rim was defective. the point being the dealer; either made no attempt to really diagnose the problem, or his staff was incompetent. the new tires performed flawlessly, even in heavy rains at hi-speed. we would be willing to bet that the wilderness at and the firestone atx have weak sidewalls that flex too much, esp' at the ford recommend psi' or lazy people running the tire underinflated at an even more dangerous level, generating tremendous heat and failures at hiway speeds, esp where the air gets very hot... there is also a computer controlled engine kill/shut down that manifested itself at the apex of 7 vehicle pass, on a 2-lane and almost got me killed: the dealer denied its' existence, failed to say it was there after a ford rep admitted it was there as part of compliance to meet cafe requirements(this could have already caused a lot accidents, and is fraud). finally the last thing is; maybe minor, but a large number of control wires for the x-mission and x-fer case are exposed and can be ripped out travelling over bush or scrub. potential fatal problems could arise... thanks for listening i( dot number: tire size: 245/75/16 )
