Automatic transmission linkage becomes loose due to no lockwashers in mounting plate on steering column under the dashboard. linkage came loose causing loss of control of transmission gearing. causes spontaneous gear shifting under various operating conditions and prevents proper gear setting. failure could cause total loss of control of transmission. lock washers were used in all products until recently. computers were first to dispence with them. now many engineers no longer specify them. scary to think that maybe aviation has gone the same.

Frame rotted. i feel as though it is a problem with many many rangers with the year around 2000. i had a cracked frame about 2 feet forward of where from suspension for rear tires meet frame. cracked frame completely and when bed was removed cause truck to collapse and be immoveable until frame was simply patched to be moved. had to junk truck due to condition and repair costs were more than truck was worth. very upset with 2000 ford ranger i purchased. spent alot of money and didnt even get a year out of truck. never used to tow or as work truck. never more than 200 pounds in bed and still had frame problems. some thing is very wrong with ford ranger frames. when will something be done . i may never purchase another ford vehicle due to this unfortunate but all too common frame failure.

I have a 2000 ford ranger xlt extended cab 4x4 i first started having trouble with the alternator it just stopped working, took to shop and the brushes on it was wore out had the replaced and it lasted 2 days and same problem so had to buy a new alternator at 300.00 it lasted 4 days took it back to parts store got a replacement and im still using it but it still isn't working as good as it should got stranded at 1230 am beside road with my daughter with me the first time, and when that happened that when my od light started flashing and the transmission wouldn't shift into the right gears had to manually shift it to get it to move took to shop noone could find the problem even putting it on the computer no codes was found ended up getting stranded again when train completely quit pulling had towed to shop and had to buy another train at 600.00 and that is 3 weeks pay for us but its the only vehicle we have so had to get it fixed looked to see if any recalls have been issued for this but none have but have seen many many complaints i think ford need to looking to this problem soon, it could cause an accident and someone could get seriously hurt. thanks have ready everyone's issues and have alot of the same with my truck. *tr

In october of 2006 the automatic transmission in my 2000 4x4 ford ranger began to not engage in park when i would stop and park the truck. the indicator would also not stop on the gear that the truck was in. after checking the transmission selector cable run and adjusting it where it enters the transmission the problem was a little better. in about two weeks the problem began again and i looked at the components i had looked at before and everything was the same. at that time i also got a mirror and light and looked under the dash at the back of the gear selector and saw two star drive screws. i put a star drive on my driver and found both screws turned easily. after tightening the screws the shifting mechanism stayed on each gear as it should have and engaged all gears and park. the problem was fixed. the consequences of this were, that, before it was fixed i would stop the truck put it in park get out, and the truck would start rolling. fortunately, i began using the parking brake before i figured out what the problem was. i only use my truck on rough roads about 5% of the time. since this part is in a really out of sight place the screws should have some extra locking mechanism or adhesive on them because the consumer or mechanic is not going to look for the problem which is out of sight and in a hard to reach place. *nm

My 2000 ranger has just 50k miles, which exceeds the warranty, and already has major transmission problems, which has cost me $3000 dollars to repair. according to the transmission shop whom repaired my transmission, said the damage did not happen over night; it was due to poor quality parts used by the manufacturer of the transmission. the damage began several thousand miles prior to, then resulted in transmission failure. being that hundreds of others have experienced the same transmission problems as i have, and that it is obvious that ford is aware of these transmission problems, which explains their sad warranties, and continues to use them in their new vehicles, which will lead to more robbing of innocent consumers, ford needs to repair the problems at no cost to the consumer, and or stop using such poor quality parts in their products. since these transmission problems began at the mfg. level, i believe that ford should reimburse the cost to repair my transmission. *cb

At less than 36,000 miles, and at just 4 yrs old, the transmission needed to be completely rebuilt and a celanoid needed to be replaced. in addition, i have had to replace at least 2 sensors. ford says there is nothing they can do at this time and will not release any data as to how many ford rangers have required the transmission to be rebuilt or replaced. in addition, ford will not comment as to whether the issue is even being investigated by the engineers. i feel that this is an issue that ford is aware of but is not willing to correct at this time because they are not required to by law.*ak

Both front tires wearing, feathering and cupping. aligned twice and had tires rotated twice and they are still wearing, cupping and feathering. these tires are going to be shredded before i hit 25,000 miles. we do not drive our truck except for short trips around town because we do not trust tires and wear on this vehicle. we were told by the ford service dept. that ford will never replace the tires under any circumstances. we feel this truck they way the tires are wearing makes it very unsafe to drive but we are put in a position and have to drive it so we can show the tires are wearing severely. we feel this puts our lives in danger. the transmission went out at 2945 miles. elk grove ford where we bought the vehicle told us they put on a new transmission and discovered it was rebuilt. they refused to give us a receipt until we went through the better business bureau. they put on crossbar holding transmission mount crooked, they overfilled the transmission fluid. we took it back three times for leaky transmission pan gasket on rebuilt transmission. *ak

This 2000 ranger is having transmission problems. this is a replacement vehical for a 1999 ranger i had which had the same exact problems. now my new truck is doing the following: transmission shutters between gears shaking vehical, clunks into gear, hesitates. truck has been in shop once now, dealer found no problem and said i don't want to see this truck in our shop again. this was the same dealer which had my 1999 truck for 42 days before the buy back from ford. *ak
POWER TRAIN - AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - LEVER AND LINKAGE - COLUMN SHIFT

On or about 8/1/05 i parked my 2000 ford ranger xlt in my driveway and got out to open the gated parking space at my residence. vehicle jumped into reverse and backed into the street. managed to stop it but injured my knee. found pin from shifter mechanism on the floor under steering column that had fallen out of shifter. shifter would not stay in park afterwards but kept jumping into neutral and reverse. spring tension of the shift indicator would pull it out of park as soon as the lever was released. shifter would go into neutral and reverse at random. had to shut off the vehicle and restart when i left car even briefly - not something drivers normally do. vehicle popped into neutral about 75 to 100 times and into reverse about 50 times. had to hold the lever in park to restart. about a week or so after the initial failure, i heard a loud sproing and a snap sound. shift indicator went all the way to the right in d1 position. it never worked again. shift lever now stays weakly in park but pops into gear sometimes. ford dealer had no interest in problem and merely referred me to manufacturer. manufacturer referred me back to the dealer. shifter mechanism is defectively designed and not fit for its intended use. vehicle does not meet fmvss because critical shifter mechanism is defective and will fail catastrophically. gear shift ought to work without failure for the life of the vehicle. ford and its dealers do not have any measures in place to address this failure and instead try to push off corrective action, leaving the vehicle owner with a hazardous condition. this failure has probably happened to others and is being underreported because of the actions of ford and its dealers. if this defect is not corrected, it will ultimately kill somebody. nhtsa has a duty to call ford and its dealers into account and require a recall to correct the defect.

Computer parts regulating the transmission, drive train, and engine have failed on four different occassions. the last incident, june 19, 2000, the truck switched from 2 wheel drive into four wheel drive while the vehicle was in motion rounding a corner. this sudden jolt caused the truck to tip onto two wheels and then slam back down. both myself and my passenger were tossed around the truck causing head, neck, and back injuries. the truck had been in for similar problems atleast three times prior to this incident. my truck is only 40 days old and i am already scared to drive it due to fear of serious bodily injury. i can't possibly imagine that i am the only person who is experiencing these problems with the 2000 ford ranger.*ak

POWER TRAIN - CLUTCH ASSEMBLY

This is a red carpet contract. bought the pickup in oct.99. started having trouble with the clutch in jan.2000, sent it in to check the clutch and they said nothing wrong. sent i back because engine light stayed on and the problem with clutch was still there. they changed a sensor and again said nothing wrong with clutch. i didn't get it out of the lot before the clutch went completely out. this time they replaced the clutch.they said it was a manufactor default in nov.2000 was hit broadsided on passenger side, behide door, and the whole backend was replaced. put 2 new tiares on back and extensive work done on backend. assumed tires were balanced and front and back aligned. i had it back again july 22,2001. the clutch is acting up again, the steering is all wrong and it keeps dying on me. the back of the truck feels like it is trying to pass the front end. the front end shakes relly bad at 60mph, and when i try to speed up the motor bogs down . i took it back for all this and once again nothing is wrong except my inagination, and the wheels need to be balanced and the faront end needs re-alignment. i was told that the reason it wouldn't speed up when given gas was because of the carpet under the gas peddal, so they removed it. the clutch is still not engaging correctly and they still say there is nothing wrong with it. my warrantuy is out at 36000 miles and i want this truck fixed now not next year. because i am a woman they think that i am stupid but i have news for them. there is something wrong with the truck and if i'd have known that this would be happening i would never have accepted the truck after the accident. the assured me that everything was like brandnew, but they lied and now they won't correct anything. i do hope that you will check into this, as i have 2 small children who travel in this truck and if anything happens to them because of these problems, i will have no other option that to hire an attorney and go to court.

At 50,000 miles, my ford ranger began experiencing a slipping transmission and failed to start. the problems were diagnosed as a failed gasket in the transmission, and a failed valve body part in the motor (which was fixed with an update kit). the dealer also indicated that the ball joints were beginning to fail, and a front pinion seal had begun to leak. *ak

POWER TRAIN - TRANSFER CASE (4-WHEEL DRIVE)
09/10/2000109/01/2000
I just purchased the vehicle right before this happened. i was pulling out of my drive way with my infant daughter in the vehicle. we were going approximately 20 miles an hour max. the truck made a horrible winding noise than a crashing noise. it was so loud people came out of their houses thinking it was an accident. right when it happened the truck just abruptly stopped without warning. i looked at the dash and the 4 wheel high light came on followed immediately by the 4 wheel low light and then no lights. it was towed. i am concerned because the dealership has given me conflicting stories on the safety of the vehicle. before they knew the problem they told me if it was the transfer case it could cause an accident on the highway for me and my baby. then once they found it was the transfer case that cracked when the truck supposidly shifted into four wheel low on it s own, they then decided the vehicle was safe if they fix the transfer case and that it wouldn't happen again. well, it happened in the first place. i spoke with several other mechanics and they said the vehicle is unsafe. i do not know who to believe.
