I can't possibly remember the dates these things happened. i put a new (used) transmission and this one is slipping. i put more brake pads and calipers than you would use in a life time. the springs are weak in the back, but to exspensive to change. i put a new fuel pump and gas tank. i've put a new egr valve, oxygen sensor, throttle sensor, air temp sensor. i put a blinker switch and new struts because mine broke. 3 out of 4 of my doors will not open because of the handles. these are just a few of the things i wrote down or can remember. now it will not start unless i pump the gas(it's fuel injected) and keep turning it over and over. then i'm not sure if it will start again when i shut it off. the fuel pump is working i think, i can hear it. i bought the car used and the person put a 1989 motor into a 1991 body. these things still went wrong with the car either way. i did not check any below because i'm not sure what to check.

Tl* the contact owns a 1991 ford taurus. while driving an approximate speed of 35 mph, the vehicle began to shake. the vehicle was towed to a local repair shop where the independent mechanic replaced the radiator, battery, motor and transmission mounts. the contact confirmed that the vehicle was repaired previously under nhtsa campaign id numbers: 98v323000 (structure: frame and members) and 91v134000 (service brakes, hydraulic: foundation components: disc: rotor) yet did not correct the failure. the dealer made repairs a second time and the manufacturer was notified to report the failures. the failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 102,000.

My 1991 ford taurus wagon has always had major transaxle problems! on two separate occasions the transmission pan bolts loossened on their own. this has caused premature transmission damage, and now the wagon runs misserably! though we tightened up the bolts (for the third time) enough damage occured to the transmission and now the whole transmission needs replacement. i put a new one in when i bought it. i will never buy another ford again, and several people who i am aquainted with will know my little ford ordeal as well (i'll make it a point that they know). how could a company that has been making cars for so long go so damm astray? some one told me that ford spelled in reverse stands for: driver returns on foot....drof *la

The transmission that failed is a repalcement transmission, installed by a ford dealership, 3 years and less than 12,000 miles ago. it has been repaired by an independent transmission specialist. ford refuses to do anything for us since the replacement transmission was out of warranty. it has become obvious to us that ford is well aware that these transmissions are junk.

In april 1998, our 1991 ford taurus station wagon's transmission failed despite having only 61,518 miles on it at the time. we incurred over $2,100 in expenses repairing the transmission, which was then out of warranty. our transmission shop told us that this car suffered from a design defect, in that the transmission did not have a sufficient cooling system, and that if the transmission became hot it could fail upon having to shift gears at slower speeds. this was exactly what happened to our car; my wife had completed a long, highway trip, and the transmission simply failed and locked up after she exited the interstate and began stop and go driving. she was actually pulling away from a stop light when the failure occurred. in august 1999, i discovered that ford had actually sent out a letter in 1995 advising of an extension of its warranty on these transmissions due to repeated failures. i sent a letter asking for reimbursement at that time, since our car had been only 1,518 miles over the 60,000 limit at the time of the failure, but i received a reply from ford refusing to provide any reimbursement whatsoever. i took no action at that time, but recently, the transmission on this car failed again, this time with only 79,400 miles (about 18,300 miles since previous failure) and we have incurred another $2,300 in repair expense, despite our having taken more than adequate care of this car. we would like to know if there is any recourse for these extraordinary expenses, given that ford apparently was aware of a defect in its transmissions for this model of car, yet failed to offer a recall or replacement and failed to reimburse us adequately in the past. this car has too few miles, and has been cared for too well, simply to junk it, but with the ongoing transmission problems it has become a car we can neither use nor sell. *ak

I was about 75 miles from home traveling south on interstate 87 @65 mph.i had passed a semi. and pulled back into the right lane. the taurus shuddered and shook and immediately dropped to 45 mph. i put on the 4way flashers and pulled to the right side of the highway. i called aaa and had to be flat-bedded off the interstate back to my home. the ford motor co. 's problems with the sudden failure of the forward clutch piston in the axod-e transmission have been well documented beginning in yhe 1986 model year. but the 1991 seems to fail the most . usually in the 60-80k range. just my luck, i bought the car with 76k on it and only got 6000 miles out of it. the transmission will cost between $900-$1200 to replace. ford did have an onp addressing these failures and did ,in the past, reimburse for correcting them.*ak

I am reporting my transmission problem because i have heard from several different people, that have told me that the 1991 transmissions in ford's wereknown to be bad . i am a single income person with 3 kids. i paid someone $1200 to fix my transsmission. i drove it less than 1 weeek and it went again. i called the person and told them about it and now he has had the car for over 1 year because he cannot fix it and i cannot afford to pay again to get it fixed. i know that is not your problem. but!! i feel that because i have called and talked to so many people (dealers, transmission specialists and other owners of 1991 ford taurus') and they all have said the same thing. that the transmissions are bad and very expensive to fix, and that alot of times even when fixed (like in my case, i believe) they cannot be fixed properly. so, as of right now i am out a car that i paid $7,100 for and the $1200 dollars for a transmission. the person i had fix my transsmission is a certified transsmission specialist but i know he did his job in trying to fix it. now he doesn't have the money to try to fix it and i just don't know what to do anymore!! i feel that ford should take responsibity for the 1991 transmission problems. thank you for your time.

Problem is transmission slippage, which from talking with other owners, and transmission mechanics have had many problems with the 1991 ford taurus , lincoln transmissions due to internal defective components which should be covered by the manufacturer but when contacted say there is no problem and will not acknowledge this to be a problem. i was told that this was the worst trans. for that vehicle series, every mechanic i talked to said this is a ford defect, and should be taken care of by ford. any help on how to pursue this would be appreciated. *ak

I have always maintained this vehicle in accordance with manufacturers specifications and retained receipts to substantiate this claim. the vehicle has proven to be unreliable and a risk to operate even when maintained within manufacturers specifications. considering the scope and frequency of major component failure with this vehicle, the manufacturers recommended maintenance schedule has no relationship to the subject vehicles operational characteristics. based on my experiences and other reports in print on this particular make and model, ford produced a vehicle (thousands of them) that present an obvious safety hazard to the occupants of the vehicle and to the general public. this vehicle was designed as a 8 passenger family car. the opportunity to significantly injury the occupants due to a major component failure or combination of major component failure must be above acceptable risk standards established by the nhtsa. i have been fortunate that all of the major component failures have occurred at reduced speeds and not in conjested seattle/tacoma freeway traffic situations. the last transmission failure occurred one day after my family traveled to seattle to enjoy seafair and if it had occurred on i-5, it could have resulted in serious injury to my entire family of 5. at what point does the nhtsa take action against a manufacturer for producing a vehicle that is a known lemon that has serious safety concerns.

I purchased the vehicle used in 1997. the seller had the transmission re-built a few months before, but to no avail. i had the transmission re-built a few months after purchase, and returned it about three times, again to no avail. the failure is very hard and jolting downshifting from third to second--traveling about 25-30 m.p.h. in third, slowing to about 15 m.p.h., and attempting to accelerate again. the vehicle also frequently sticks in first from a stop, and slams into second at about 25 mph. also, sometimes on downshifts from third when trying to accelerate from 25-30 m.p.h., the transmission skips to first and immediately slams into second with the engine at very high r.p.m.'s. also, from a complete stop, the car sometimes starts in second, even when the gear shift lever is placed in the 1 position. i have since driven in other tauruses of that or similar years, and i have yet to see one with a good transmission.
