I have a 1993 ford taurus 3.0 v6. i have read about the 3.8 v6's with head gasket problems. at just 71000 miles i have the same problem. i purchased this vehicle from my parents, who bought it new. my father is a retired nyc transit authority mechanic, and he was meticulous about the upkeep of his vehicles. now i am face with an automobile that is nothing more than a huge paperweight.over the last few years it seems that i was just throwing good money after bad. a couple of hundred here, $700 for a complete overhaul of the a/c system, etc. i do not have the cash to spend approximately $1300 on repairs. i was shocked when i went to your website and brought up the information on my '93 taurus. the amount of tsb's that affect my car asounded me. i have paid for repairs to some, and thought others were just age issues. these tsb's that directly affect my automobile included; 93-23-6,94-19-4,94-16-3,96-7-5,96-15-3,95-3-4,96-22-1,93-3-9,&95-19-1. as i stated, this car has always been in my family. why hasn't ford tried to contact us on any of these issues? on one of these tsb's, we developed a leak in a cooling line. the dealership chaged us $360 for repairs, when we found out that it was supposed to be covered by ford, we were only reimbused $60. ford said the dealer should reimburse us the balance, and the dealer said that ford should reimburse us. guess what, except for the $60, we never got reimbused the additional $300. i am at wits end. my wife and i bought this car from my mother a 5 years ago, when our family started to grow. obviously with just 71,000 miles she does not do a lot of driving. shopping and work for her are all within a 15 mile radius. but with the loss of a vehicle she has had to reduce the amont of work she would normally put in by 50%. is there any help out there?

Engine head gasket failure- my family and i were going down the road at approx. 35mph when very suddenly the temp guage went into the red, white smoke was coming from the tailpipe. at that point the car stalled in traffic this was very frustrating not to mention scary my two small children were in the car. when the car was looked at we were told the engine had to be replaced due to bad head gaskets this is an ongoing problem with ford and the 93-94-95 taurus ford has issued an extended warranty on the 94-95 but continues to disregard the 1993 head gasket problem. i have lost a lot of faith in ford products because of this.*ak

In january 1998 i noticed while driving home from work that the temperature gauge was staying in the red zone near the h. i took it into an independent mechanic the next morning and was informed that the head gasket had blown. the cost of this repair was around $1100. on saturday 05/27/2000 when driving away from a parking lot i noticed the car was idling very rough, the temperature gauge was pegged at the h, and smoke was coming out the tailpipe. i parked the car and had it towed to another independent repair shop near my home. they informed me that the head gasket had blown again. the repair bill is possibly going to be between $1100 - $1500. both independent repair shops informed me that this is a common problem with the 1993 taurus 3.8 v6 engine. i have also browsed your complaints section of your website and found many other complaints like mine. i will be contacting the national ford office in the morning to see if there is any recourse they can offer. if this is a known problem i feel like ford should recall these vehicles and/or reimburse people who have already spent money on repairing this problem. *ak

At 55 mph, heater started to blow only cold air, temperature gauge shot up to red (overheat) zone. car was stopped and allowed to cool down, then proceeded to limp 10 miles home at slow speed. vehicle was then towed to ford dealer. dealer determined the headgasket(s) has failed causing problem. not sure if bearing damaged occurred. no visible water / milky oil present. lots of steam from exhaust. dealer also noted timing cover leaking. i asked dealer to contact ford about cost assistance since this failure nearly unexpectedly left my wife on the side of the road in a very rural area and the fact that this type of engine failure is not normal at only 60,000 miles. per dealer, ford refused to assist me due to mileage / age. i was charged $1343.48 for this repair. i have since leaned that this failure mode is common for this engine at around 65,000 miles. i believe ford should be required to warranty this defect. ford previous tsb's covering this problem were not broad enough to effectively address all the model years / mileages involved. i do not feel my vehicle being disabled due to a headgasket failure at 60,000 miles should be considered normal by the manufacturer. *ak

I was going 70 mph down the freeway and the car started bucking and smelled terrible. pulled of at the next exit and by that time the car was idleing very rough. tried to make it home and then noticed the temp gauge swung all the way over to h. then i noticed in my mirror that white steam was pouring out from the car. pulled over and shut it down quick. it wouldn't even turn over for the tow truck man, which i spent 1 1/2 hours waiting for. i think ford should extend it's warranty down another year since this is such a common problem. maybe with enough of it being reported, they will.

Its hard to believe that all this failed at once but it did. i just started my car to go somewhere and all this happened yet a few hours earlier it was fine.i asked the gentleman at napa auto store about this and he commented that he gets at least one person a week getting head gasgets for this engine size (3.8). i found this rather surprising and upsetting.

I would be glad to e-mail copies of letters in which i contacted ford motor co. their 2/00 recall regarding the head gasket design flaw in the 1.8l v-6 engine doesn't include the 1993 - the same engine design. ford won't even give me a written response to my written letters; they have the local ford dealer call me. i didn't begin to tell you all the other things that have gone wrong monthly (the latest? it's august and i have no air conditioning). i had taken the transmission in while under 75m extended warranty-it was already having problems, but there was no fix. the blown head gasket was about 5m miles past the extended warranty. please let me know if you require additional data. thanks. *ak

Ford motor co will not cover this repair, even though they have massive documentation that the 3.8l engines have a defect in the head gasket. they are only agreeing to repair 1994-95 models at this time. i contacted them in september of 99 when the car began having problems overheating. they assured me that there were no known incidents of any such problems. when we finally had to replace the head gaskets, and the radiator, in january it was over $1,600.00. i contacted ford again and was told they hadn't heard a thing about problems with these engines, even though my mechanic said it was very well known and he had a stack of them that he had repaired. finally in march, ford announced that it would extend the warranty on the 1994 and newer models to cover the head gasket up to 100k miles. i called and asked to be included, since my car currently had less than 100k. they refused to offer any help. i have now just had to spend an additional $275.00 to replace the water pump, which is also probably a result of the head gasket failure. *ak

This car has been in for recall work more than half a dozen times. the motor mounts have broken twice, the air-conditioning has been replaced twice, the head gasket and serpentine belt have blown, and the cooling fan is still not operating properly. the windshield wipers are not operating proper.ly, and the car does not steer properly. when i called the dealership - they said ford is not responsible for repairs after the warrenty period. the dealer told me i have the same engine design as the 94 and 95 taurus. why will ford not accept responsibility for the repair of this obviously inadequate design? the repair bills on this vehicle have been prohibitive, and this is not a cheap car! *ak

This 3.8l engine runs very hot and will cause the cylinder head gaskets to crack. the result is that engine coolant enters the engine compartment fouling the spark plugs and using up the coolant. the end result is that there is violent vibration in the engine and if you continue driving, you will destroy the engine. if this happened in traffic, it could cause serious consequences.

I have had trouble with almost everything possible on this car. the head gasket failed with no warning, no overheating - car would not start, had it towed to dealer who informed that head gasket had blown. head gasket failed again 7 months later. had trouble with surging, racing engine from about 25000 miles, dealer could not find problem. finally, replaced speed sensor when out of warranty, and it failed again 4 months later. have had tie rods and ball joints replaced, motor mounts replaced twice, brake problems starting at 24,000 miles. the air conditioner compressor came apart while under warranty. the cooling fan is now sticking, which started at 65000 miles.mechanic advised that this part is notorious for going bad, and that so many have had to be replace, the price of the part has gone down. i feel the 1993 3.8l taurus models should be covered under the recall, as well as the cooling fans, and i should be reimbursed for the cost of repairs. this car has very low mileage, has not been abused, and should not be costing me so much to drive. i will never buy another ford product, due to these problems, as well as problems i have had with the dealership. thank you for any assistance in this matter.*ak

My 1993 taurus had a blown head gasket at 60000 miles. ford has recalled all 1994-1995 vehicles and replaced free of charge. why haven't the 93 models also been recalled & replaced free of charge? this is clearly a manufacterers defect and all 3.8l engines should be fixed. they also gave these vehicles 7 year, 100,000 mile warranty extensions. once again, why not the 93 models too?????? i've checked on various message boards & there seems to be substanial complaints about this problem on the 93's. i would appreciate any help you could give me with this problem. thanks john. *ak

On monday march 27, 2000, the car overheated into the red line. on wednesday march 29, 2000, i drove the car to the nearest ford dealership for repairs. the service department confirmed a blown engine head gasket. the repairs were not completed until 4/11/00; the ford service department said they were very busy with ford 3.8-liter, v-6 engine blown head gasket repairs. on 5/8/00 i returned the car to replace an oxygen sensor damaged due to the head gasket failure. based on newspaper articles that ford was reimbursing for head gasket repairs on the 3.8-liter, v-6 engine, i wrote four letters to date (7/30/00) sent by certified mail, return receipt requested to mr. a. r. o'neill, vehicle service and programs, ford customer service division. so far, i have not received any written response from mr. o'neill. *ak

The head gasket on my 93 taurus failed causing the vehicle to overheat. when i brought the car to my mechanic he told me that ford would fix the problem free of charge because a technical serivce bulletin was issued for a defect in the head gaskets. i contacted ford and they told me that there was no program right now to fix the 93 taurus. since i need my car to get back and forth from work i went ahead and had my mechanic fix the problem. this cost me about $1300.00. in my opinion that i should be reimbursed by ford because they have aknowledged a defect with the head gaskets but for some unknown reason they do not have a program to fix the 1993 model year. *ak

Engine started to run hot and lose power with steamy, white smoke coming from exhaust pipe, and within five minutes the vehicle broke down on calif rte 30 (late at night), and had to be towed off the freeway. after examination of the motor, my mechanic advised me that the entire motor would have to be overhauled due to extensive internal damage resulting from a blown head gasket. the vehicle was tied-up in his repair shop for over three weeks. the work required to place my vehicle back in proper running condition was $3,500- out of my pocket. i still own the vehicle. ford motor company should be liable for the entire amount of this expense because it is well-documented within the nhtsa (odi) data base that this type of mechanical defect has been an on-going occurrance in their ford taurus products for years. when is the federal government or someone going to do something definitive about this problem? i have a paid mechanic's work order for the previously described motor overhaul, and i hereby demand that ford motor company reimburse me immediately. *ak

Car suddenly slowed, and immediate loss of engine power. exhaust started omitting white smoke. i was able to get off the road with no incident. coolant and fluids leaked into the main engine compartment i found out later, resulting from blown head gaskets. my car was in the garage at this same dealer several times before the gaskets blew. ford was aware of defective gaskets inthis engine and at no time did this ford certified dealer advise me to have the gaskets replaced. they owed the public a responsibility to warn them of the potential failure. in heavy traffic and in hot weather it could have frozen or locked up the engine. i drove the car afterwards trying to determine what the engine failures was and could not get it in until after christmas. i do not not what resididual damage there has been to the engine since the patient was sewn back up in this case. undoubtedly, the engine life has been shortned as a result of driving the car with collant and foreign fluids in the engine. i also owned a 1990 lincoln continental with the same engine. it froze. i was told by ford it would cost me $3800 to put a new engine in it.*ak

I am filing this complaint on behalf of the original owner and myself. the original owner had numerous problems with the car (brakes, transmission) prior to selling the car to me. the car was in very good overall condition (except for the engine and transmission)and had been routinely maintained. in march the engine overheated on the original owner, he took the car to a mechanic who diagnosed the problem as a leaky head gasket and / or cracked cylinder head (based on his experience with the ford 3.8 engine). other mechanics, including ford mechanics, give him the same diagnosis over the phone. the original owner was fed up with repairing the car and did not want to sink any more money into the car. the original owner offered to give me the car - i made several recall inquiries with ford about the car and shared the information with the original owner. rather than hope for a future recall they sold me the car for $500 and wished me luck. they told me that they would never buy another ford product. i have not had good experience with ford products myself, but bought the car for my son who will pay for repairing the car. my son is keen on buying a ford and i hope to use this car as a lesson in not buying ford products. *ak

I saw that ford issued a recall on 94-95 taurus with the 3.8l engines that had a head gasket failure. i would like you to put pressure on ford to open it up to other years and models of fords. i have seen a lot of people on the internet with the same problem that i have just experienced with my head gasket failing. in addition, i work at a small company with only 25 employees and just found out that another person in our company has a 1993 ford taurus. he justed had to replace his head gasket on his ford, and it only had 60k miles on it. to me this is unacceptable that ford can get away with so many other fords having the same problems as the 94-95 that they just recalled last month. please put pressure on ford to widen the recall to other years that are experiencing the same problems. thank you. *ak

Engine head gasket failure as being reimbursed by ford, cost of repairs estimated at 3,500.00 by lacey ford catskill new york where vehicle was towed to. the cost of repairs far exceeded the value of vehicle. since we were over 300 miles from home, we felt it necessary to lease a new vehicle for a period of 3 years. if the head gasket had not failed we would not have invested in a new vehicle at that time.

*ak

Engine head gasket blew at 78,000. our mechanic told us this seems to be a chronic problem on 1993 and 1994 3.8 l ford taurus engines. several people we know have stated the same problems with this engine. this leads us to believe this is a design defect. when we contacted ford customer service, we were informed no recall or extended service is avaialable to correct this problem eventhough they said it is not uncommon. ford customer service staff did tell us it is unusual for a head gasket to go at 78,000. ford customer service staff also told us their extended warranty program of 5 years or 60,000 miles only applies to 1995 versions of the 3.8 l engine. our second problem is that of the rack and pinion. the front of end of this vehicle has had many problems in the last two years. the front coil springs broke and were eventually covered under a recall. however, we have had to replace the front struts, ball joints, tie rod ends, and rack and pinion on seperate occassions through 1998 (the vehicle had roughly 65,000 miles at this time). while we were in for the last recall on the vehicle, the ford service department also told us our engine mounts were rusting out and would need to be replaced. it appears that the 1993 ford taurus has a problem with the durability of the front end componts.

We noticed the engine seemed to shake excessively. we took the car to the local ford dealer (cox ford, hampstead, md). they informed us that our problem was twofold. first they said the head gasket was leaking, and that the motor mounts were deteriorated. after doing some extensive research on the internet and with phone conversations with ford motor company, we learned that there was a safety recall on the motor mounts (ref: tsb #92m77 jun 95). initially the ford customer assistance clerk indicated that this work would be performed with no problem. after several hours, we were notified by another ford customer assistance clerk that this particular recall was subject to a 60,000 mile limitation (this was not indicated on the internet site or by the first clerk). further more, discussions with a service manager from another local ford dealer had indicated that ford has had a lot of pre-mature failures with the 3.8l head gaskets and that there was a slight possibility that the excessive shock and vibrations from the broken motor mount could have contributed to the head gasket failure. estimated repairs for this pre-mature failure is going to cost me as much as $2000.00 on a vehicle less than 5 years old. any information or assistance in this matter would be appreciated.

The car was over-heating but ice cold air was coming out of vents when heat was dialed up to the max (90*f). understandably the car was running a little irratically (sputtering & hesitating). i opened car hood to find all the antifreeze in the reservoir leaking and ready to explode. a local mechanic saw this and said the cylinder head gasket is shot, that the high pressure within the compression system is now transmitted into the coolant system so antifreeze can't circulate freely to cool engine or enter heating core to facilitate hot air into car (particularly inconvenient in the northeast about now) and also the reason it's nearly exploding from coolant reservoir. it's presently being repaired at my expense ($1500.00) at carman ford. my local mechanic didn't wan't to attempt it. he admitted this is a common failure with taurus'/sables and at 50000mls, it's very premature. carman ford of course concurred with his diagnosis and when i asked if they could fix it they assured me it was a very common problem that they repair several a week or month (i can't remember, i think i was in shock). they wouldn't guarantee there would be no residual problems with the engine, but if i wanted to trade up to a new model before sinking this much $ into my own, they'd be happy to call a salesman nextdoor. i called ford manufacturer directly and as you might imagine, i received no satisfaction. thank you for your assistance.

I am writing about the problem that occurs while we are driving our ford taurus. the problem is that the car turns off with no warning, and the engine completely shuts off when driving at 65-70 mph in highway/expressway traffic as well as on local streets at 30 - 45 mph. we have reported this to ford and to ford dealership mechanics and they have said they are not aware of any problems such as this. we have to open the hood and let the engine compartment cool down. when the compartment cools down then the car starts right up and runs until it stops again. this is a very dangerous problem. the car just stops in front of other cars and we have to try to pull off onto the shoulder or grass or whatever is there. something needs to be done about this asap. i notice that other taurus cars have their hoods open when they are driving. i am sure they have the same problem. ford needs to take care of this problem right away. our car has been doing this since about 50,000 to 55,000 miles(1999) and maybe before that because we bought it used. thank you for your assistance. please contact with any news of remedying this situation.*ak

During hot days this summer and when the vehicle has warmed up, the engine shuts off, it has happened several times at stoplights or stop signs, three times while driving at 50 60 mph. also the car will not start for several minutes after the event. on occasions it will not immediately start after long drives within an 1/2 hour of parking it. these events just started after the car reached 100,000 miles. i had a tuneup and informed dealer of the issues -no problems found.

We experienced numerous recalls for safety issues, all of which we had checked at laird noller. the car experienced several other repairs (airconditioner) early in its mileage. at 78,000 the transmission went out completely and totally, leaving our daughter (age 20) stranded 110 miles from home on i-70. we had the transmission replaced at green ford in abilene, ks. costing us about $1900.ten months later the head gasket blew, leaving my husband stranded on i-70. we had that replaced for $900.

Driving on crowded highway in 3rd lane uphill with wife and 3 children in car when engine had sudden almost total loss of power and white smoke began pouring out exhaust. had to go through 2 lanes of heavy traffic to make it to breakdown lane. engine quit in 1st lane with almost total loss of steering and braking ability. then had to wait on side of highway for towtruck. extremely heavy white smoke also blinded cars behind us and made it tough for them to see. i feel head gasket should last at least 100k miles minimum and should not fail so catastrophically. understand this is very common problem with this engine and ford has a secret owner repair reimbursement program for cars under 5 years/60k miles. head gasket definitaly should last more than 60k miles. i also feel this hidden warranty should be extended and that this is a serious design defect in this engine.

Vehicle stalled at traffic speed of 65 mph. have had 3 other incidents at various speeds. i have taken the vehicle to three dealers thus far and no one will fix the car. i told the dealers that the car only stalls after traveling approx 75 to 100 miles. no dealer has been willing to drive the car long enough to duplicate the problem. i have called ford motor co. twice to complain and got no help so far. dealers have told me that they have done diagnostics on the car, but i do not believe them because they have not charged me anything. dealers have kept my car anywhere from 1 to 4 days and done no repairs whatsoever. every time a dealer has had my car, i have had to initiate all calls to inquire on the status of the car. i got one call in 4 days from clonninger ford here in salisbury. even on the last day they had the car, they did not call and tell me what the status of repair was. (which was none). i have stressed how dangerous it is to have the car stall in highway traffic but no one seems to care. when i called gerry wood where i bought the car, i spoke to ms. wood with my complaints. her answer to me? that's why people strive to buy new cars rather than used ones. i pointed out to her that the car i bought only had 42,000 miles at time of purchase and that i had also bought an extended warranty to cover any needed repairs. however, my warranty is no good if the dealers will not test or repair the car. she did not seem to care and told me that it was a risk everyone took when they bought a used car and that there was nothing she could do for me. i have had the car to tri-city ford in eden, where it stalled when i was visiting my sister in the hospital. (100+ miles from my home, stranding me). no repairs because dealer could not duplicate the problem after having it three days. i took to clonninger ford in salisbury and got the same results after 4 days of keeping the car. plaza ford, lexington nc kept car for 1 day and didn't even touch it! more......

Problem 1--engine light kept coming on; took to dealer and read codes--o2 sensor failing and transmission slippage. re transmission slippage, dealer advised that he witnessed slippage and was cracked piston in transmission; advised me that problem was common because piston was aluminum and are being replaced with steel pistons; now having severe problems with harsh engagements; was told to drive it till couldn't drive anymore before repair--if piston should be steel and not aluminum that piston is defective and that ford should repair at their costs. re: engine bolt, had to have engine mount repaired at cost of $350--info at this site suggests recalll which i never received. i should be reimbursed for cost of defective bolt.

Where do i start, this car has been a money pit from day one! the brakes had to be completely replaced 3 days after we bought the car--signature ford claimed it was are fault after some argument they finally reimbursed us for the brakes. we discovered a small leak, we found it to be coming from the heater hose. we decided to trust signature ford, they claimed that we needed a new heater hose, water pump and radiator. we took are car back to the first mechanic who looked at it and he swore that those things were not leaking when they left his shop, no proof though so we haven't filed a complaint against signature ford. we have since replaced the heater hose and water pump. we are taking the radiator in to be checked out very soon. we had the starter replaced at signature ford, since it was fixed the keyless entry stopped working. we've had the brakes complely fixed, three times. we have had the oxygen sensors replaced. the airconditioner will not work, we were told that we need a new compressor and clutch. there is a short that causes a fuse to blow, resuliting in loss of gauges. one of the back windows will not work. the molding around said window does not fit properly. the power steering makes a strange noise and sometimes does not seem to be working; we took it in to signature while under warranty and were told that it was fine. when we first purchased the car the tires that were on it were too big resulting in excessive wear. the current tires show signs of excessive wear on the inside front passanger tire. the transmission has been totally rebuilt, the tech. who fixed it said that this is typical of sho's. the fog lights sometimes fail. the lamp out light comes on even when no lamp is out. the check engine light comes on sometimes during acceleration. the door ajar light comes on and goes off at various times. if we had known then what we know now we never would have purchased this vehicle. we cannot afford all of these costly repairs! *

The head gasket leaks. also, the oxygen sensor was replaced when anti-freeze was found on the old oxygen sensor. mechanic states that this is a sign of a defective head gasket, it just started to leak. but driving will make it worse, and could result in more damage to head gasket and then an engine block. *ak
