Headlights went out. fiddled desperately with the on/off switch & got them to come back on. went out several times over the next 30 minutes ... discovered turning off and back on fixed. suspected it had to do with the heat. over the two month, recurred several times after driving for 30 minutes or so. also found that usually pressure applied to the switch itself and jiggling would bring them back, and discovered i could hold the high beams on. finally searched here and found 98v009000, which seems to be the same problem. have contacted the local dealer ... but gave them recall 98s01 (found elsewhere when looking for replacement part when i had decided that it most likely was in the switch). *tr

High mount brake light bulb holders are brittle, brown to black due to burning. i have checked 2 other people with the same type of high mount brake lights and they are also showing signs of overheating at the connection. appears to be much the same problem as the recall on the headlamp switch which resulted in a melted/ burned wiring connection.*ak

Where do i start, this car has been a money pit from day one! the brakes had to be completely replaced 3 days after we bought the car--signature ford claimed it was are fault after some argument they finally reimbursed us for the brakes. we discovered a small leak, we found it to be coming from the heater hose. we decided to trust signature ford, they claimed that we needed a new heater hose, water pump and radiator. we took are car back to the first mechanic who looked at it and he swore that those things were not leaking when they left his shop, no proof though so we haven't filed a complaint against signature ford. we have since replaced the heater hose and water pump. we are taking the radiator in to be checked out very soon. we had the starter replaced at signature ford, since it was fixed the keyless entry stopped working. we've had the brakes complely fixed, three times. we have had the oxygen sensors replaced. the airconditioner will not work, we were told that we need a new compressor and clutch. there is a short that causes a fuse to blow, resuliting in loss of gauges. one of the back windows will not work. the molding around said window does not fit properly. the power steering makes a strange noise and sometimes does not seem to be working; we took it in to signature while under warranty and were told that it was fine. when we first purchased the car the tires that were on it were too big resulting in excessive wear. the current tires show signs of excessive wear on the inside front passanger tire. the transmission has been totally rebuilt, the tech. who fixed it said that this is typical of sho's. the fog lights sometimes fail. the lamp out light comes on even when no lamp is out. the check engine light comes on sometimes during acceleration. the door ajar light comes on and goes off at various times. if we had known then what we know now we never would have purchased this vehicle. we cannot afford all of these costly repairs! *

Improper seal on headlights leads to a premature and significant loss of nighttime visibility. i have replaced bulbs but it doesn't help. the problem started when the car was about 4 years old and has gotten progressively worse. the high cost of periodically replacing the entire headlight assembly is impractical as the car ages. i have confirmed this problem with other owners. the car has not been in any accidents. in my opinion, driving this car at night entails a hazard related to the design of the headlights so i avoid doing so whenever possible, but i can't always do so. *la

I know that a recall (nhtsa campaign id # 98v009000) has been done on 1993 ford taurus.... i looked this up after i began having problems with my headlights going off and on while the vehicle was in operation. when i took the vehicle to the dealer i was told that my taurus was not involved in the recall for this problem and would not be covered. i have contacted the ford motor company reguarding this matter and am very dissatisfied. this is very dangerous to my vehicle as well as the occupants in the vehicle. i do not understand how approx. 506000 vehicles were found to have this problem but yet when my taurus also is affected (same year of the recall/same model) it is not covered. i would appreciate if you could look into this matter. *ak

Head light turn off during stop or driving condition. the high beams would have to be engaged momentarily to make the head lights stay on or the steering wheel has to be tilted up and down several times to make head lights stay on. as of this writing, the only way the car head lights stay on is by driving with the steering wheel tilted all the way up, which makes for funny driving.

I previously reported headlight failure due to a switch problem. i discovered that there is a recall, id number: 98v009000, but it does not apply to my vehicle, manufactured in august 1992. that recall involves a circuit breaker. i think this recall on the cirucit breaker is masking another problem, probably with the switch itself. the recall describes the lights going out for brief intervals. i see three differences between this description and the problems i, and others, have experienced. first, the intervals are not necessarily brief. second, the lights may also come on or stay on when the switch is in the off position. third, when the lights are on, they are much too dim. a review of consumer complaints for the 1993 taurus on the nhtsa website showed many similar complaints. so many, that i had neither the time nor the need to review them all. i reviewed about one-third of the complaints and found 20 relating to the headlights. a few referred to the circuit breaker or a failure to honor the recall. many referred to the headlights going on and off, which may be the circuit breaker, or it may be the switch or some other problem. some refer specifically to the switch, probably because a mechanic identified the problem or because jiggling the switch can temporarily fix the problem, or both--as in my case. at least two complaints, number 507203 and 510254, complain of poor visibility. that is, not lights out, but lights dim. one complaint, number 53127, complains that the lights go out but the vehicle, like mine, is not included in the recall. i think there is more going on here than a defective circuit breaker. your investigators may have identified that problem and quite naturally thought that it was the entire problem. something else is wrong. you need to revisit this issue.

This is the problem described in your recall announcement 93v009000. the parts department at my dealer, damerow, knew of the recall and said that the dealer should repair the problem without charge. however, when i contacted damerow service, they could not find the problem on ford's oasis report and so refused to repair the problem. i checked with another dealer. same negative report. then i called ford. same negative report. ford claims that it has never heard of this recall. would you please let ford know about the recall and ask them to repair my vehicle in particular? *ak
