Defect Summary	The arc welds on the sway bar bracket, where it attaches to the strut reserve tube, did not fuse properly.
Consequence Summary	Over time, a portion of the bracket can tear away from the strut, falling into and puncturing the tire or causing damage to the wheel, which could result in an accident.
Corrective Summary	Monroe dealers will replace the strut free of charge.

Defect Summary	This is not a safety recall in accordance with federal regulation 573. however, it is deemed a safety improvement campaign by the agency. vehicle description: passenger vehicles originally sold or currently registered in the states of new york, michigan, ohio, illinois, wisconsin, pennsylvania, massachusetts, indiana, new jersey, maine, connecticut, new hampshire, rhode island, vermont, minnesota, iowa, missouri, kentucky, maryland, delaware, and west virginia. ford is providing an extended warranty through the year 2001 for replacement of fron tsprings due to fracture. the front coil springs can fracture as a result of corrosion in combination with small cracks in the springs.
Consequence Summary	The front tire could deflate due to a broken front coil spring contacting the tire, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
Corrective Summary	Customers with vehicles that have broken springs are to return their vehicle for spring replacement. both springs will be replaced even if only one spring is fractured.
Notes	Ford has decided to provide an extended warranty through the year 2001 for replacement of front springs due to fracture.owners can contact ford at 1-800-392-3673.

Notes	Owners of these vehicles received two notifications.the first notification was mailed july 16, 1998, advising owners that parts were not yet available.the second notice was sent (a postcard) on november 4, 1998,that parts are available. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact ford at 1-800-392-3673.also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

	Odi opened pe97-035 and ea97-026 after receiving four complaints of front spring breakage on 1993 ford taurus vehicles.on may 5, 1998, ford motor company filed a defect information report concerning front spring breakage on 1993 ford taurus and mercury sable vehicles built from august 1, 1992 through july 31, 1993 and registered in 21 states with high corrosion; safety recall 98v-094.odi has received three reports of failed new springs or inadequate protective shields, 17 reports of out of scope front spring fractures, including six tire punctures, and ten reports of shields contacting tires and noise problems to the extent that some dealers are removing the shields.all of the odi reports occurred within the geographic scope of safety recall 98v-094.this rq is to determine the extent of remedy failures and out of scope problems in safety recall 98v-094.

	Vehicle stalls out while driving. contacted dealer, had head gasket replaced. however, problem reoccurred. had head gasket replaced again. ak consumer has been advised that the entire engine needs to be replaced, the pan plug left undone causing vehicle to lose oil, the radiator had to be replaced due to over torque bolts which bursted around the core, the engine is knocking and the oil light illuminated due to lack of oil. consumer has lost trust in the dealership. head lights failed, light switch was replaced. the wipers were noisy, dealer replaced the multifunction switch and wiper motor. there is a popping noise when turning, there is a rubbing noise in the right front on turns and when backing up. the air conditioner is not blowing cold air, shrater valve and a/c refrigerant was replaced. the key switch failed. the faulty antenna motor failed. the master cylinder had to be replaced. tie rod was replaced. tt

	Right wheel is making noise whenever a turn is being made or coming to a stop. dealer notified, and informed consumer that strud rod/ subframes, and bushing needed to be replaced. feel free to provide any further details on this matter.*ak

	Recall # 98v323000 ford/subframe corrosion: after having recall campaign completed, suspension became unstable and loud nosies came from vehicle when driving over bumps. also, vehicle overheated because of a significant amount of coolant leakage. owner experienced no problems with vehicle before having recall campaign completed. please provide any further information. *ak

	Tl*the contact owns a 1993 ford taurus. the contact took the vehicle to a local mechanic for an oil change and was informed that the coil springs and struts failed and the sway bar was damaged. prior to this information, the contact noticed that the front end was lower than normal. the vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer. nhtsa campaign id number 98i002000 (suspension:front:springs:coil springs) was referenced. the current and failure mileages were 150,000.

	Tl*the contact owns a 1993 ford taurus. the front suspension fell out while driving 40 mph. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that the coil spring needed to be replaced. the manufacturer stated that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 98v094000 (suspension:front:springs:coil springs). the manufacturer was unable to assist. the current mileage was 108,000 and failure mileage was 106,000.

	The rack & pinion pulls apart and causes the front end to become out of alignment and also causes the vehicle to steer terribly. the right front motor mount burst because it is hydraulic this always happens when the rack and pinion goes out. the transmission also has a defect in the fourth gear ratio and shows on the diagnostic computer when serviced.

	Vehicle stalling intermittently, at any speed/any time. dealer stated this was due to a faulty ignition device. ak vehicle will not start whether it is in park or neutral. starter, sparkplugs, and battery have been replaced, door chime would sound when keys were not in ignition. transmission slipping and experiences erratic shifting. faulty front struts cause vehicle to oversteer, tires were rotated and front was aligned to help problem, however did not remedy. dashboard rattles, however dealer can not remedy this problem. driver side door does not close properly and there is wind noise when driven over 20 mph, left door was not aligned properly. keyless entry failed, passenger side rear door lock inoperable. emergency brake was never installed. there is a consisent wind sound in vehicle. front end experienced shaking. excessive fuel consumption. difficult and noisy steering occurred, dealer replaced power steering line. front brake pads replaced. exhaust replaced. fuel pump replaced. windshield wiper switch was replaced. vehicle currently has only 47114 miles on. slc

	Rt frount lower controll arm assembly- from mileage of approx. 63000 to present, 112,000, the lower controll arm assembly has had to be repalced 3 times and retorked 1. i also had to pay for realignment at each repair. now after the 3rd replacement the car shimmies and pulles to the left, which it did not do before repair. the dealer more or less told me too bad. one of the repairs was not done by ford there for not reliable. this car has a file 2 inches thick from maintenance and repairs. there still isn't any expaination of what is causing the problem.

	While driving 5 mph, the front coil spring was cut into the tire and caused a tire blowout. the consumer managed to pull over and had the vehicle towed. ak recall# 98i002000. the consumer's son was driving when the incident occurred and assumed that the tire was the problem until the other side blew out. the service dealer found that the front coil springs had broken and had cut into the tires. later, a trusted mechanic of the consumer's found that the spring catcher bracket that was installed by ford had failed to prevent the broken spring from puncturing the tire. (the stop gag measure did not work properly to rectify the defective coils) sc *jb

	I have had the coil spring break (later recalled), had a recall on the motor mounts, and a recall on the body mounts. two comments: 1) could the failure of the front right coil spring have caused the failure of the strut mount? 2) if every other mount located on this vehicle has been recalled it would seem to me that there was a problem with the metal used and therefore the strut mounts may also have a manufacturing defect.

	While crossing a set of railroad tracks there was a loud bang and a drop in the right front of the car. i proceeded about 1000 feet to where i work and parked. when i went to leave that night, there was a loud groaning from the car as i started to move it. i looked under the car and found part of the spring lodged against the tire, preventing it from being able to be driven. i had the car towed to the local firestone dealership for repair. the damage was repaired by firestone dealership. they stated the coil spring was corroded and broke in two, damaging the strut and breaking the strut bearing plate. i later found out ford had recalled some taurus models for this exact problem. i contacted ford who stated my car was not covered by the recall notice. they would not say why not but referred me to the local ford dealer concerning two additional recalls that do aply to my car. the information about campaign id 98i002000 and 98v094000 stated 281000 cars could be affected by this problem. mine defenitelyhad this problem while ford is denying any responsibility. *ak

	Our '93 taurus broke a coil spring at 30k miles and the other at 40k. i paid to have both repairs done. i wrote to ford to complain which didn't help any. now the car has been recalled. i have been waiting since july'98 to be reimbursed which ford said they would do in the recall letter. i also had the protective shields added as recommended in the recall at no charge. now i can't get the dealer to remove them. every time the body sways, such as going over a dip in the road, it causes a loud banging noise. i suspect the shields are bottoming out on the tires. they are suppose to protect the tire from a puncture in case the coil spring breaks. again i tried to call ford headquarters but all i got was a clerk with no apparent authority to do anything. also i have had problems with the rear suspension also at 49k miles. both rear sway bars had to be replaced and i had a broken right rear link whatever that is.

	Vehicle stalling intermittently, at any speed/any time. dealer stated this was due to a faulty ignition device. ak vehicle will not start whether it is in park or neutral. starter, sparkplugs, and battery have been replaced, door chime would sound when keys were not in ignition. transmission slipping and experiences erratic shifting. faulty front struts cause vehicle to oversteer, tires were rotated and front was aligned to help problem, however did not remedy. dashboard rattles, however dealer can not remedy this problem. driver side door does not close properly and there is wind noise when driven over 20 mph, left door was not aligned properly. keyless entry failed, passenger side rear door lock inoperable. emergency brake was never installed. there is a consisent wind sound in vehicle. front end experienced shaking. excessive fuel consumption. difficult and noisy steering occurred, dealer replaced power steering line. front brake pads replaced. exhaust replaced. fuel pump replaced. windshield wiper switch was replaced. vehicle currently has only 47114 miles on. slc
