1994 ford taurus 3.8 l ...head gasket failure at 69,000 miles, warranty recall and engine replaced approx june 2000. now at 130,000 miles, 60,000 miles and 3-1/2 years on the new engine, i again have a cracked hg, this time with combustion gases in the coolant. ford tells me the new engine had a 12 month, 12,000 mile warranty just like all ford parts. but this is not a starter or alternator, this is the entire engine, the bulk of the value of the car. i can't be sure if the replacement engine had the new improved gasket and longer bolts, or if it was off the shelf 3.8 with admittedly faulty gasket. gases force coolant out the overflow. the car overheats very rapidly, the needle can move from normal to red line in 10 seconds and i have to pull over and shut it off. i spend more time looking at the temp gauge than the road in front of me, and often i have to pull over with very little notice, on the freeway in heavy traffic. i think you should be able to get more than 60,000 miles and 3-1/2 years on a ford motor company engine. i can't even sell or trade this car in, it's value has dropped to nothing. *nm

While driving at approx. 35 mph, i noticed the coolant temperaure had shot up to the red zone. as soon as this happened, it immediately went back down to the midrange of the temperature gauge and stayed there for approx. 10 miles. i checked the anti-freeze at a gas station and it seemed to be full. i parked the car and let it cool for about three hours. i began my drive home and the temp. stayed in the midrange of the gauge for about 20 miles and then shot up to the red zone. it hovered there about 1 minute and then shot back down to the mid range. i parked the vehicle in my garage. the next morning, i started it up and drove about 1/4 mile and white smoke began pouring from the tailpipe. the smoke smelled like anti-freeze. i returned home and had the vehicle towed to a repair shop. previously, ford had sent me a letter detailing the defect and offering a warranty extension to 100,000 miles. however, i was already past 100,000 miles when they sent the letter. can they be forced to cover some or all of the cost of replacing the head gasket? the car failed only two months after i made the last payment to ford credit corporation. can you help me?*ak

All problems with our 1994 taurus have existed since the purchase date, ford has denied several of the recalls and service bulletins listed at nhtsa. the car continues to constantly overheat and run hot, we still can smell gas through vents, door handle problems, gas consumption problem, and several others still exist without acknowledgement from ford (even when confronted with exact numbers and dates of recalls and bulletins), all problems still exist without help from ford. fords customer concern, customer service and quality in general is severely lacking. we are tired of runarounds, tired of denials related to these problems, tired of ford denying that we have made previous complaints, tired of ford refusing to provide paper work the few times they had the vehichle. tired of this scary lemon we own, tired of ford in general.

Although car has never actually overheated, it runs very hot. it loses alot of water (overflow will be empty every 3 days or less) but there is no leak. took it in for a tuneup and was told the head gaskets were blown. called around and was told there was a recall on engine. called dealer. they kept it for 3 days and told us it was not the engine, but the water pump. they refused to fix or replace engine even though under recall. called ford motor customer service department. was told we stand behind our certified techs and they will do nothing. engine is under recall for another 1,000 miles, but ford is refusing to fix due to rusty's saying it is not the head gaskets. had it looked at at a third place and they say the water pump is fine. they could not locate the problem, but car is still losing fluid and you can watch the temp guage rise very quickly as you are driving. does a recall mean that they have to replace the engine, or is it only if i have problems? i was told by rusty's that if someone else says the head gaskets are blown, they will have to prove it. i have been told this is impossible without tearing the engine apart. help!!!

I purchased the vehicle may 13, 1999 from sanger ford in sanger california, 93657. on october 29,1999 the cars engine blew up due to a patched up water pump that came from sanger ford like this when i purchased it. the water pump was full of stop leak, which would explain why the car seemed to run a little warm. when the water pump went out on the car, it broke off inside for whatever reason and when this happened, it tore hell out of the engine. the engine did not blow due to it over heating, the engine blew due to the damage done by the water pump. i could not get any help from the dealer or the finance company. but i sure had to mail in that payment every month. it took all the money i had and could borrow and 5 and 1/2 months later to have my car repaired. i am a single mother of 4 children and a car is very much needed. i thought i had bought a car i could depend on and trust to transport my daughters in, but was wrong. i also during this down time received 2 or more recall notices for the vehicle that had been issued prior to the sell of the car to myself. so, the dealer sold me a car without doing the proper repairs brought on by the recalls. so, what else did they get away with???? i will continue to search for help in recovering my loses due to the of professionalism by this company. any help you can give me on this matter i could really use. thank you, brandee bridges 06-17-00. *ak

Sudden failure of head gasket which also caused failures of both o2 sensors, timing cover gasket, radiator, and water pump. the head gasket caused a sudden failure which left my family and i stranded for a short time on the side of interstate 75 south of corbin, ky (very dangerous place for a breakdown). the initial head gasket failure caused a massive leakage of coolant through the cylinders and out the exhaust which caused both oxygen sensors to fail (engine light came on). in addition, head gasket failure caused engine to overheat and also opened up the cooling system to being pounded by the pressure of the combustion chamber (failed gasket opened up an abnormal path between combustion cylinders and cooling system) - this resulted in cooling leakage failure in the radiator, water pump, and timing cover gasket. these are expensive failures that appear to be very common to ford's 3.8l v6 engine (head gasket failures) which is also used in their sable, windstar, continental, and mustang. ford is not taking responsibility for my failure and yet it is a design problem that nhtsa's own site shows over 150 failures for the windstar alone (same engine). ford needs to issue a safety recall on this issue - it was certainly a safety related failure in my case. *ak

The main failure that i'm interested in reporting is the engine cooling system (failure of head gasket). i have added the 3 failures of the air conditioning system since i feel one of these failures may have caused the already defective head gasket to become even more prone to failure. 1st a/c failure in march 98 was for accumulator hose had a hole in it. 2nd a/c failure in may99 coil-pulley-clutch assy had to be replaced. in july 99 all the hoses including heater hose and the manifold-intake lower were replaced. when i drove the car home from this repair a small amount of smoke came thru the vents into the car and there was a strange odor. i called the garage and reported this they said, some of the antifreeze must have got onto the engine and not to worry. fifteen days later on 16july19 the smoke started pouring out of the vents again. this is the 3rd a/c which was for a core heater assy. i think that this cause a overheating of the engine and further damaged the already defective head gaskets (to be far this is only a guess on my part since the temp. indicator never got in the red area. also i should mention that the day after all the hoses were changed i had to return the car since there was antifreeze on my garage floor cause my a clamp not being install correctly. the on 14dec99 the car started overheating, i checked the overflow antifreeze area added antifreeze and took the car to the dealer. they did a pressure test and found a bad hose and replaced it. on 21dec99 engine overheating again. put more antifreeze in took the car to the dealer. first they called and saidit was the thermostat. then the next day they said, blown head gasket. i think all this overheading didn't help the head gasket but i really think fold should be responsible and made to replace these head gaskets free even though the extended warrenty period on the recall has passed. the recall was not clearly witten.

Car was taken to the dealer on 09/09/1999 when problem detected in starting the car. upon attempting to start the engine, engine will crank and start but it stalled when key spring was let go at random basis. dealer claimed to find the problem and replaced multifuction sw and ignition switch, and replaced battery and cleaned the terminals. this cost me $474 and the problem was not fixed. the car was taken back to the dealer on 09/13/1999. on 09/20/1999 dealer claimed that they found the problem and it was just the adjustment in safety switch. dealer claimed that they fixed the problem. after that the problem did not go away and continue to happen on random basis. the dealer was contacted and dealer indicated that they will call me back when they are ready to fix this. as of 11/22/1999 i have not heard from fullerton ford dealer. the problem is worse now and i can not even start the car. so i called ford customer assistance at 1-800-392-3673 and spoke with duane. i told him that dealership has unsuccessfully attempted to fix the problem. i described the car problem. i asked that ford motor company help dealer to identify and fix the problem since dealer was unsuccessful in fixing the problem and they don't seem to know what the problem is. duane replied that only dealer is authorized to fix the problem, i should take my car back to the dealer and there is nothing ford motor comapny can do for me. i asked duane that what is the point in taking car back to the ford dealer when after two unsuccessful attempts they have not fixed. duane repeated the earlier statement of taking car back to the dealer and that there is nothing ford motor co. can do. as far as the cooling system goes, i asked the fullerton ford dealer to check the leaking coolant on 05/17/1999. they conducted pressure test and replaced coolant and told me that there is no leak. however as of 11/26/99 it still leaks upon starting the car near radiator.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING - COOLING SYSTEM - RADIATOR ASSEMBLY

I was driving at about 55 mph when i noticed that my temperature guage had jumped all the way to hot. i proceeded to drive the mile and a half to my house. at a red light my car was making a slight knocking sound. my husband found the radiator empty and tried to fill it again with one gallon anti-freeze and one gallon water. he started the engine and large amounts of smoke came out from the tail pipe and the engine and the exhaust pipe and water was dripping underneath the exhaust. we had a professional mechanic look at it and he diagnosed it as being a blown head gasket.

08/11/1999103/01/1994
*ak

Bearings and connecting rods damaged. dealer serviced engine one week prior. replace gaskets and thermostat. ford issued engine recall notice june 1998 for engine overheating that could cause head gasket failure. non-defective engine should not have failed, thermostat installation by dealer was negligent, and quite likely gasket 'repairs', contributed to engine failure. *ak

My car has been running hot off & on for over a year. have taken it back to the dealer thought the problem was corrected, but not so. took car to another machanic, they put a new radiator in that cost 600.+ the car ran hot. a week later, took it to another machanic. he found out it was a blown head gasket. i called lewis for and because it happened 10 days after the expiration on the recall, the would not fix it. i spent another 1100.00 to have this fixed. i can not afford to pay what the ford dealers charge per hour. therefore did not take my car to them. i have had my car in the shop so many times and it makes me mad. now i'm stuck with this car that has 5 recalls on it. it is a pain to try and find rides back & fourth to work, as well as getting my son to school, as they do not provide a loaner car. it is not my fault they could not build this car correctly, but still put it out there and sell them. i think it is very unfair to make us pay the price, and i will never own another ford and will discourage anyone else from purchasing one. *ak

I initially had problems w/ the head gaskets on this vehicle. there was a recall issued and it took two different dealerships on two separate occasions to fix this problem. finally after 2 months of waiting without a vehicle the problem was resolved, at no cost to me. however, upon getting the car back i began experiencing problems with the vehicle dying while in full motion, irregardless of speed traveling. i have taken the car back to the dealership on 7 separate occasions for a period of 6 months to get this resolved and have yet to only get the run around. last night, on the way home from work my car stalled once again. i do not work in a pleasant area of chattanooga and as i was walking to find a pay phone, i was accosted by an individual with a gun who was threatening to rob me and beat me down. i fled from the situation praying for my life and somehow made it away safely. i am now however at the breaking point with this fuel problem with this taurus. i have found information concerning a ruling by california state superior court judge michael ballachey, ordering a recall on cars with this problem. ballachey states that ford has sold as many as 23 million vehicles with this flaw. the court also ruled that ford has known about this problem since 1982-these vehicles stall, especially when the engine is hot. this means intensified danger with my personal vehicle because the engine was prone the overheat frequently, because the head gaskets are aluminum (another manufacturers problem with this make and model). i contacted ford headquarters (1-800-392-3673) and was told that the judge has no authority to recall the vehicles and that there was nothing that they could do to help me. the local ford dealership, mtn. view ford, that has made the numerous repairs upon my vehicle claims no responsibility for this problem either. owner david watson didn't admit knowledge of this recurring problem. help please.*ak

Engine head gasket failed. the engine lost all coolant. we were able to shut engine down without overheating the engine. checked engine oil for possible coolant contamination.. found no sign of oil/coolant mix. dealer says that estimate of repairs to be around $1200.00 to $1600.00 if they find nothing else wrong. there has to be something wrong with the 3.8 head gasket design. i bought this car with only 20,000 miles and have serviced it perfectly. i have changed oil every 3000 miles, flushed coolant every 30,000 miles, etc. etc. this car has 91,000 miles on it . it has never been driven hard or used for towing. i am a service manager for a company that uses ford trucks and vans for service work. we have the 351 ci and 460 ci push rod engines as well as the 5.4l and 6.8l overhead cam triton engines and have well over 140,000 miles on many of them and have never had a head gasket problem. what's the deal??

On 7/24/00 i took my car to tulsa auto collection quality care facility at 11122 east 71st street tulsa, ok. (918-250-3555) to have my a/c system repaired, as it was working just fine the day before. tom, the mechanic who inspected my car, stated that the motor mounts had failed, which resulted in engine vibration. the vibration was hard enough to cause a rupture in a a/c line, which in turn caused a complete a/c system failure. a major leak was found at the high pressure line to condensor. will require manifold hose replacement. will also need new filter dryer hose assembly, since system has been exposed to air. replace estimated repairs $625. also motor mounts are bad and must be replaced before any a/c work is performed. estimated motor mount replace $450-$600. now, since it is getting cold, i have found that my heater is not working. possibly as a result of the rupture in the a/c lines. i am asking that ford kindly repair my car because i have seen at nthsa's web site many complaints that people have made about problem motor mounts over the span of several years. i have talked to ford and they refuse to repair the car without my paying for it. i believe that it is unfair for ford to force the consumer to pay for such repairs, when their motor mounts have a proven history of failure.*aky

The vehicle developed overheating symptoms. i took it to the ford dealer for inspection and found out that the timing case gasket was leaking and it might damage the engine, which already had devloped knocking noises. i contacted the ford customer service and asked them for warranty coverage, since it was out of my reach to repair/install a new engine. ford company which then was sending letters for free change of head gaskets which could produce the same problems as mine. but my request went in a vain. now the vehicle has completely stopped operation since the water has mixed with the engine oil. this seems to be a manufacturing defect and hence i appeal that nhtsa should respond to this in a better manner. thanking you.*ak

Actual head gasket failure occured over 2 years prior to reported date was able to get by, but the oil light has been coming on when the engine gets to normal temperature and the car is idling. ford put out cars with defective head gaskets and should not be allowed to limit the warranty. if it fails, they should pay to repair or replace the parts- i understand that about 750,000 of these failures have occured- ford should pay for selling defective products.

June 1997 i was told by a 2 different mechanics ..one from penske auto in milford ma, the other from beradi automotive in milford ...after bringing in a car for a problem where my car would run hot at idle...that my head gasket would eventually fail because of this problem. penske went so far to believe it already happened and my block was cracked. they recommended taking the car to a ford dealer for check up. on 6/16/97, with odometer showing 53123 miles, i took the car to valley ford in milford. i told them penske thought the block was cracked. they investigated and said this wasn't the case. to my complaint that the engine ran hot at idle, with a flickering oil lite only at idle they claimed the getting hotter at idle was characteristic of that make and the lite flickering was due to a sensitve lite. they found nothing wrong. the car continued to run hot at idle, sometimes smelling. i took the car to beradi automotive and they reiterated some day my head gasket would fail and they have replaced a bun.

*ak
12/21/1999105/01/1994

*ak

My wife had brought the car into the ford dealer (star ford) the previous october because the car had stalled and died in an intersection. nothing was found to be wrong. she had it in again for standard servicing and complained about it running rough but nothing could be found wrong. my wife was driving my daughter to school when the car started to overheat and run rough. she managed to drive it to a repair shop. they diagnosed it as a blown head gasket. we contacted ford since my wife had previously received a letter from them stating that due to reported problems with head gaskets they were extending the waranty until the end of 1997 or 60,000 miles. we missed it by a month and a half, or 5,000 miles, and they would do nothing to help us out. we had the car repaired but this past week, on oct. 14 the new head gasket blew. based on this experience and hundreds of other letters that i have read on various internet web sites, it seems obvious that something is defective with this particular motor. although in my case, we had no danger involved with the breakdown, we were lucky to be driving in town within close proximity of help. ford has apparently not done anything to remedy this problem for the older models like mine or even newer models. i called their service technician number stating my concern that should i repair the car again at considerable cost, it would probably not resolve the problem. i indicated that my only recourse was to trade the car in and let the pending problem end up being some other unsuspecting persons burden. i am reluctant to do this but all ford could say was that it was up to me, they couldnt do anything.

Engine failure - driving on 4 lane highway, car stalled - after several different attempts to find problem, problem was found. the problem was that the teeth on the gear on the bottom of the distributor had broken off. this type of stress failure should not have occurred. the ford company had been notified and would not consider any resolution to this problem being outside the manufacturer's warranty. the other problem that occurred was that the speedodometer had begun to fail.... going from zero to 60 and back after about 5 minutes of driving. a speed sensor had failed. the car was also doing a hard jerking at about 35 miles per hour. ford dealership had told me that the problem was that 2 of the automatic transmission gears were bad and we had them replaced. i contacted the dealership because i had found out ford had many (i mean many) problems with this same problem in all the ford taurus vehicles. still the dealership ford company would do nothing including filing this complaint stating it was outside the warranty. i believe that ford should have backed some it not all of this up considering the mileage and problem history of this vehicle. distributer gears should have never broken off unless the metal compound had been defective.

*ak
