 1. the engine problem was a blown head gasket 2. the transmission problem was a planetary gear meltdown. i replaced the planetary gearset and the fiber parts, plates and seals. i also installed an axod dam kit made by shift technology products to increase the lubrication to the planetaries. unfortunately, the transmission still has the same delayed shifts from second to third and third to fourth and a delayed and harsh third to second downshift that it always had (it was my wifes car when i met her and it had 30000 miles on it at that time). 3. runs on the hot side even after the head gasket change. i've replaced the thermostat seeveral times and the water pump once and the radiator once. i finally removed the thermostat and let it run without one and the gage will still run in the middle. also, the cooling fan works.

All records of the 3 speedometers put in this car at greenhaw eddings - they have full service record since i purchased from my nephew in fl. while still under warranty. 2 speedometer were replaced under warranty. the 3rd one i had to pay half and supposedly greenhaw paid the other half. i did contact ford motor asking if they were having significant problems. they said no>. when it was out of warranty it happened again and i felt ford owed me replacement til it was fixed. the dealer said no. the service manager said on the last one it shouldn't happen again - i asked why -- he said because ford had a new replacement. so they were having problems. now is has over 100,000 miles on it and it is doing the same damn thing again. when driving the speedometer acts loose the needle swings between 45mph and 70mph. it seems to me they owe me restitution and to fix this thing ... i have never had such a problem and can't believe i am the only one. can you help me?*ak

Dealer replaced speedometer after it was showing same problems as we've read on other 95 tauruses. however, the odometer still read the same -- did they really replace it? within one week it was having the same jumpy problem. they had previously lubricated the speedometer cable, which fixed the situation for a couple of weeks. we are taking the car back tomorrow to see what they say, now that we've seen how many taurus owners have had problems with speedometers.

I purchased said 1995 ford taurus used in july 1997, shortly thereafter, i noticed the speedometer needle bouncing at speeds above 50 mph. the dealer fixed the problem (date and mileage listed herein is the first repair) the dealer (listed herein is now out of business) repaired the vehicle 2 more times under extended warranty within a year. the speedometer block was replaced again a 4th time by hixson autoplex, the ford dealer in alexandria, la on 6 -14-99. no directive for this repair was given other than to replace the same part. in september 2000, the speedometer broke again. i returned to hixson autoplex, explained the situation, and they gave me ford's consumer affairs 800 number. although, i explained the car had been repaired four times by authorized ford dealers for the same problem, the representative stood firm that the repair had lasted 3 whole months past ford's policy of a 1 year warranty, therefore they would not help. needing a speedometer, i contacted the ford dealership in jena, louisiana. i was told that the speedometer part was $500. my attorney sent ford consumer repairs a letter asking them to repair the vehicle. using legal gobbldygoop that did not even apply to louisiana law, and basing their arguement on the amount of time between the purchase when the car was new ( they were told i had bought it over 2 years later) and my original problem date. again, they declined to help in any way. recently, i have had chance meetings with 2 owners of 95 tauruses, both descibed similar speedometer problems.*ak

Initial failure of speedometer was at 34,000 miles. replaced under warranty at bob gillingham ford. the replacement speedometer failed at 90,000. failure being the unable to show speed above 40 mph due to erratic needle behavior. same failure mode both times. have heard it was due to defective design of speedometer, insufficient lubrication for bearings. ford is well aware of problem, since they have received countless complaints and even issued a techical service bulletin on this particular speedometer. i believe they are repsonsible for replacing the second failed speedometer since they replaced the original with the same defective part. they refuse to take responsibility. costs to consumer to replace the speedometer is $600 to $700. a speedometer is not a normal wear and tear part. a car should not be going through two speedometers in only 90,000 miles.*ak

Speedometer has been replaced three times.speedometer jumps to various speeds and does not record the correct speed. dealer and manufacturer have failed to correct the problem. it appears that this is a problem that is being experienced by other ford owners as reflected in the database of complaints. this is a dangerous situation as drivers of fords with this problem have no idea on how fast they are driving. please advise how you will require ford to correct the problem. based on the number of complaints in your database reflects that this is an on going problem. due to the costly nature of repairing this problem and not having any assurance that it will finally be corrected properly, i am asking for your agencys intervention to rectify this problem. previous attempts to correct the problem have not been positive. *ak

Speedometer failed twice in four years. the needle swings wildly back and forth, especially at speeds greater than 45 mph. the original unit failed at 35,000 miles (26 months). a new unit was installed in january, 1998 (43,000 miles). it too failed approximately 24 months later. now i need a third speedometer. the manufacturer warranty is for twelve months. ford tells me that the speedo unit cannot be repaired. it must be replaced with a brand new unit at a cost of nearly $700 ($500 for the part, $126 for labor, plus 6% state sales tax). i cannot spend $700 knowing that this part will likely fail in two years. ford should fix this problem once and for all, or provide a lifetime warranty. speedometers should not break. this is a safety issue. by not knowing the speed at which i am traveling, i am putting myself and other drivers at risk. in addition, this is a driver distraction because the driver is constantly preoccupied with trying to determine his speed. this also puts lives at risk similar to talking on cell phones and playing with the radio. this is in no way an issue with my local ford dealer. they always provide excellent service. this is an issue with ford motor company. *ak
04/15/200104/01/2001
This ford taurus was purchased from father-in-law, tom johre, now deceased - from his estate. the speedometer system had failed prior to purchase. how can ford say this is not a safety issue, when each time i attempt to utilize the cruise control, the wavering speedometer will cause the cruise to set at excessive speeds? this is not a maintenance issue. we know of other taurus car owners who have had the same problem - one, don ackerman of edmonton, had to have his speedometer changed three times while still on warranty. this is not a maintenance issue; it is a matter of defective manufacturing, and warrants a class action suit against ford.*ak

The speedometer randomly makes noises during which time the needle approaches 90 mph regardless of the travelling speed. i believe this is due a short-circuit inside the dashboard. i also believe this is a fire hazard. most importantly, i believe that this condition is due to a manufacturing defect which has been overlooked either due to negligence or due to poor quality control. *ak

Speedometer has failed twice. replaced at 35,000 miles under warranty. second failure not honored by dealer. at speeds above 40-45 speedometer needle swings wildly making it impossible to judge speed accurately. this problem seems to be a common thread with 1995 taurus owners. perhaps we have a recall situation here!

Speedometer jumps, . needle bounces between 0 and 85. this usually starts around 50 mph. i also don't feel it is accurate at other speeds. this is already a tsb nhtsa item #sb051008 and #sb051230. i have talked with (3) other 1995 taurus owners, and they have the same problem. i took it to a local ford dealer, they told me it was not the sensor, or the cable but a gear in the speedo, i that i would have to purchase a new speedo for $700. i feel that this is known safety defect. i have a new 16 year old driver that cannot judge his speed. this a defect and not a maintainance item. please respond as to how i can get this fixed at no cost. *ak

I have had 3 speedometers fail within 60,000 miles over a 2 year time period. the needle on the speedometer sticks or bounces back and forth, the first time was at 32,000 miles and i believe it was february of 1998. the car was still under warrenty at that time. the second time it failed was at about 55,000 miles in sept. of 1998. because my daily commute is so long, i was well over the 12,000 mile warrenty on the replacement part, even though it had only been 6 months. i did not have the part replaced until january or february because of the cost. at the time i had the speedometer replaced i was at 60,000 miles. at that time i pleaded with ford to extend the milage limit on the part because i just knew the thing wouldn't last a year. they refused, of course, and insist they have had no reports of similar problems. none of the dealerships i have dealth with on this are willing to help either. as expected, i started experiencing problems with the speedometer in november of 1999, about 7 months after the last replacement. because the car was at 81,000 miles i couldn't get anyone to even discuss it with me. i have since found information - via the web - that suggests there has been as service bullutin issued on this problem. *ak

Speedometer needle begins to bounce to 85 when wheels hit any bump at speeds over 55 miles per hour. needle hangs at that point for up to 25 seconds making it impossible to determine actual speed, or whether or not the cruise control is properly set. original speedometer failed at 15,000, replaced at about 19,000; first replacement at 30,000, replaced at 36,000; and second replacement at 49,000. ford will not replace because out of warranty, although every speedometer has failed at about 15,000 miles. due to the number of failures reported to nhtsb by taurus owners, and the inability to determine actual speed, this is a safety issue and it would appear that a recall is warranted. $600 for a replacement every 15,000 miles is not reasonable. i have never owned a car in over 40 years of driving where even one speedometer failed. *ak

This taurus's original speedometer was replaced @ 35,029 miles due to the needle bouncing uncontrollably. there was no way to tell how fast you were going. now the second speedometer is doing the same thing, and it began to do it at about 35,000 miles. my local dealer has denied any knowledge of a manufacturers problem. graham, at ford motor company in detroit, denied any manufacturer problem. however, my local independent garage, hart's auto repair, provided me with article # 97-12-5 stating that ford taurus and mercury sable 1994-95 cars had speedometer needle waver and sticking problems. applicable to this were oasis codes #204000, #204200, and #302000. i want a new speedometer with actual mileage displayed! this is a real safety issue! *ak

At about 50 mph, the speedometer needle starts bouncing around between 50 and 85+ mph (limit of speedometer). at first, bouning was intermittant, but as the weeks & months went by, it got progressively worse. it got to the point that at about 45-50 mph, the speedmeter would immediately peg to past 85 mph and just stay there. only way to gauge speed was by other cars. replaced speedometer out of warranty in july 1998. while there, dealer said that this is not an uncommon problem with tauruses, thunderbirds, and explorers of that year. this leads me to believe it might be a defect vs. a one of a kind failure. wanted to submit report so that nhtsa & ford could anaylze problem and see if a recall is warranted.
Consumer experienced a complete failure of the speedometer between 25000-40000 miles.

Speedometer very erratic. from 40 mph and higher, would bounce between 40 and 85. did not know what speed i was driving. was replaced under warranty and was alright for 15 months. acted up again in dec. 1997, samething. ford refused to accept responsibility. this is a safety problem, especially when my wife is driving on beltways and open road. *ak

I am aware that there are many 1995 taurus owners who have had problems with their speedometers. when i go over 45mph, the needle bounces between 45 and 85. this makes it difficult to determine the actual speed i'm going. i was following my parents on a trip, and my speedometer read 85 and faster the entire time i was on the interstate. but they were going only 70. if i weren't following them, i would have been going much slower than the traffic, and this is dangerous. this is a safety hazard, and i feel that something should be done about this. *ak

I have had speedometer problems twice since the purchase of this car. when the speedometer hits 50mph, the needle starts to bounce all around the scale, and the speedometer makes a buzzing noise. i brought the car in during the warranty period and had the speedometer head replaced. six months later, same problem occurred. this time the dealer would not cover the repair since they claim i exceeded the $12000 warranty on that part. there is a tsb out for this repair and numerous complaints on the same problem from other taurus owners (as documented on the web). ford needs to own up to this defect and recall. *ak

Speedometer is failing. at random speeds, the speedometer will go to 90 mph (pinned). if and when i get this fixed, it will be the 4th speedometer in this vehicle. failure has repeatedly been at 22,000 mile intervals. ford replaced the first 2 under warranty, but they refuse to acknowledge that this is chronic and safety related defect that they should have found a permanent fix for by now. dealer, bob chapman, contacted ford in my behalf, and found that (apparently) the failure rate is so high, that he can't even secure a replacement speedometer at the present.
10/20/1998309/01/1995
The speedometer head doesn't read the correct speed. i have been told that the car's transmission depends on the speedometer to function correctly in order for it to shift correctly. i am also aware of at least one other person who has the same make and model with the exact same problem. i have also been told by a major distributor that this part is commonlyreplaced on this model as well as on the ford aerostar of the same year.
01/01/1999208/01/1997
At 70-75 mph, hitting bumps will make the speedo needle drop to 85 and continue to read 10-15mph faster then the actual vehicle speed. will return to normal after a minute or so, until the next bump. this is the second speedo to fail on this. vehicle
05/01/1997206/01/1995
The speedometer failed at 25345 miles covered under the 45,000 extended warranty, and is failing again when it reached 53500 miles. it sways back and forth once the speed is over 50mph and is very noisy. there is also a loud rattling noise (just like a short circuiting sound) coming from the steering wheel column while the speedometer sways. most of the time the needle stays at over 85mph even if speed is 60mph or less. the dealer is asking about $500 to fix the problem, but i think they should fix it for free since the first failure was covered under warranty and the part was obviously not properly manufactured in the first place. i think not knowing your speed is not safe. please investigate and advice. thank you. *ak

The speedometer on the car was replaced at 50000 miles because it jumped around and made a rattling noise. now the replacement speedometer is doing the same thing. the speed at which the problem starts is now down to 40 mph. the needle jumps all over a range of about 15 mph above and below the actual speed, making it impossible to know how fast i am driving. i have spoken with other taurus owners and looked on the internet, and this seems to be a common problem. i contacted ford and they said that i would be charged for repairing this dangerous (and apparently common) problem.

The speedometer jump is not something that only we are experiencing. other's with the same vehicle model are also. we do not feel this is something that we should have to pay in excess of $300 to correct as it is not an isolated insident and has had numerous tsb posted for the problem.
11/24/1998108/01/1996
Speedometer needle jumps when going in excess of 45 mph. this results in inaccurate speed reading. for example, when driving at 55 mph the speedometer needle will jump to 80, then flip back and then will continue to go back and forth. this is causing distraction while the vehicle is being driven and can cause a crash.
11/15/1998202/01/1996
Speedometer jump and bounces around, i have found tsb's on this. the speedometer was originally replaced at apx 29000 miles for this problem, then at apx 29000 miles on the replacement it started doing the same thing again.  Speedometer does not accurately read vehicle speed. at times, speedometer will read in excess of 85 mph when vehicle is actually going much less than that. dealer has admitted that many speedometers on vehicles of this year and model have the same problem. i have replaced mine twice (once under warranty and once out of pocket). the cost exceeds $350.00 for replacement. inaccurate speed indication is a threat to public safety and ford should address this issue.

(auto description) 1995 ford taurus 3.0 liter engine with 45,000 miles. i am the original owner. (1) no event leading to failure. (2) transmission not functioning properly. diagnostic test indicates #2 clutch failure. long delay getting into drive from reverse. car lurches upon start-up. car does not shift properly from 2nd gear into 3rd gear. transmission generally unreliable. transmission has not completely failed yet.  At 45 mph vehicle lost power from transmission to wheels. it seemed to be slipping, and then it would grab and the vehicle would lurch. at times there was little or no control of the vehicle. subsequently, the transmission was consistently upshifting late and downshifting early, and sometimes slipping. one repair shop could not determine what was causing the problem. gene evans ford quickly determined that a faulty vehicle speed sensor was the cause. (this also caused the cruise control to be inop). they replaced the sensor and the transmission and cruise control have performed flawlessly. the part cost $36.58. labor was $305.46. the total bill came to $369.60. i consider this to be a safety issue, and i would like ford to reimburse me for this cost. 6

This reported defect is the 2nd one for this vehicle, and it will be in the shop again on 2/6/01. the transmission slips through gears, doesn't stop the vehicle in park, and jumps over gears. moving the shift lever from park to reverse can put the vehicle in nuetral, or park to drive can put the car into 2nd gear. the vehicle does not start in park, as it is not registering that the vehicle is in park. it can not be started in neutral all the time either, as the gear shift sometimes jumps right past neutral. to ensure the vehicle stays stopped when parked, i've had to engage the emergency brake for safety. i can no longer safely go to the drive through car wash, as the car has jumped the rail from neutral to drive, and stopped the whole car wash line.*ak

After stopping, the transmission acts as if it's in neutral, then slams into gear. this occurs primarily at stop lights and signs at intersections and puts driver in fear of not being able to get out of way of on-coming traffic. this slamming/slipping can also occur at low speed, without a prior stop, such as when entering a driveway or turning a corner at an intersection with a yield sign. we have noted several potential tech. service bulletins, which may apply to this problem, however the dealer we are using for service has been uncooperative and charged us for repairs that have not addressed the problem. (we recognize this last part of the complaint is more of a consumer's affairs problem, however, it is also leaving us driving an unsafe vehicle.). *ak

The transmission failed as i was getting on to the highyway. it got stuck in first gear and had to be towed. called many shops to get quotes on replacing the transmission, all complaining about taurus' between the years of 92 & 95 having the same problem. ford dealership said the problem was mechanical and not the fault of the owner. contacted ford co. to see if they would repair it and they denied my claim twice. if so many of these cars have the same trans. problem shouldn't they be recalled? i think ford should be responsible for defective trans. they manufactured and distributed.

Car died in parking lot. after about 7 attempts, car started on its own. car idled rough and was emitting white exhaust and on way home. put car into park at each stop light to keep it from dying. noticed a smell when got home. thought at first a battery or alternator problem. drove to dealer next day and they said that it was a faulty headgasket which blew the entire engine. doing research on your website noticed quite a few of same complaints. a car this young with under 80,000 miles should not need entire engine replacement. would appreciate so much if an investigation was conducted. we bought car 1 1/2 year ago for 10,000 and can't afford this hefty of a repair, and it should not have had this problem. but others have had it too so i think it is investigation worthy. on a few of the complaints there was an invest #1e98080 and recall #98m01kaa listed....can you tell me what this means. there are only 4 recalls under the model and type and this # was not listed. if an invest. was done in '98 i think they need to do another now because a lot of complaints came from this year or last year. manufacturer or dealer has not been very helpful and this is a very expensive repair for our new car. can you tell me where to find info on that recall # a few of the complaints said ford was aware of this, but no one has been helpful...thank you

Transmission ceases to function without any warning (sound, performance change, etc.). in this incident, the transmission failed at a busy junction of the edens and the kennedy expressways in chicago causing the car to lose power unexpectedly. fortunately the driver was able to get onto the left hand shoulder and with the help of the illinois department of transportation truck (idot) to get off the expressway without injury or other damage to the vehicle. however, the situation was extremely dangerous as this occurred at a bend in the road where passing traffic tends to come onto the shoulder. in addition traffic was both very heavy and very fast moving. this is the second time this transmission failed without warning. the first transmission failed in june 1998 at 48360 miles and was replaced by ford under extended warranty. car has had complete service since new including all recommended oil changes and adjustments. car is used for residential purposes (errands & trips), has never been in an accident, and has been operated in accordance with ford's usage guidelines (load weight, etc.). it has had no unusual or heavy stress usage. *ak

The transmission drops out of gear at stop lights/signs. you do not know this has happened until you try to move forward and the car will not move. the transmission will engaged several seconds after you apply the throttle, resulting in a hard shift into gear. ford knows about this problem, and issued a tsb 98-3-7. this has resulted in one incident at a stop light where the car to the rear hit of our car, at less than 5mph, because we could not get the car to move forward. the car is currently at capital ford, in raleigh nc, and they are rebuilding the transmission at this time. the service manager feels that the tsb is only part of the problem.

Advanded driver training schools teach that a transmission is to be placed into neutral (n) to help control skids. unlike most vehicles, the 1995 ford taurus with automatic transmission requires that the lockout button (lb) be pressed to move the lever from drive (d) to n. thus in an emergency, one could easily push the lever through to reverse (r) or even park (p) with disastrous results. this fault does not appear in other ford lines. just the ford taurus shop. investigation will show: r to n does not require the lb; n to d does not require the lb; 1 to 2 or to d does not require the lb; d to n requires the lb; n to r requires the lb; r to p requires the lb. there appears to be no reason for this other than just a design or manufacturing error. *ak

We have had multiple, intermittent problems with the transmission not engaging from a stopped position when trying to accellerate. it has actually gotten to the point now that at times it disengages even while moving slightly. it is a major safety problem in that it sometimes rolls out into the intersection, but does not engage, putting us directly into oncoming traffic. my sons use this car for school, and this is a very dangerous situation. this happened twice to the original owner prior to our purchase, and has happened several times since we have owned the car. therefore, the date of failure is not precise. the problem is getting worse and is happening much more frequently. it needs to be resolved quickly.

Transmission disengages/slips when vehicle comes to a stop, like when trying to merge into traffic. transmission jumps into gear abruptly after excellerator pedal is pressed hard. this failure caused a traffic accident and injury with this owner when trying to merge onto a highway. this complaint is being repeated over and over on this web site. how many people must be injured before action is taken?

Transmission appears to shift into netural when after coming to a stop then shifts into forward gear and jumps forward rapidly(thismay be because i'm pressing on the gas assuming it is in a forward gear. this has several times to me. i have talked to another person where i work, and he had to have his transmission replaced(about $2300).
