Car has had shake in steering wheel since the test drive; was told that it was due to car sitting on the lot and that turning the rotors would fix the problem. the shake returned shortly after purchase and has continued to be a problem since. it starts as a sublte vibration in the steering wheel and becomes a violent shake as the problem progressively gets worse. the rotors have been turned, replaced 2x, drums replaced, wheel cylinders replaced. we asked them the last time to also check proportioning valve, they said they would but didn't. it has had a total of 4 repairs for this problem, including them turning t he rotors before purchase. we sent a certified letter to ford just before the last repair. they replied with the statement that a regional office or the service manager from the dealership would contact us, and if not we were to contact the dealership. no one contacted us, and we've been in contact with the dealership for 10months with no success. the salesperson has told us she'll speak to her general manager. the certified letter was recieved by ford on 6/16/00, the last repair was done on 6/24/00, and the shake returned on 7/7/00. we have also had a big problem with them getting parts to do repairs, with it taking weeks. also were told in the winter to wait until spring for t he repair, that the problem might just be caused by sand and salt, which it wasn't.*ak

Shortly after purchasing my taurus i noticed a slight vibration when braking. it was very minor and i did not worry about it - thinking it was a knot on a tire. it got steadily worse and when i had a mechanic look at it he told me i needed new tie rod ends. the front tires had both worn to the steel belts. i replaced both the tie rod ends and the tires. now i am still feeling the shudder when i brake and last week i started noticeing the steering was getting difficult and humming as i turned. i took the car to the mechanic today and he said the rack and pinion was leaking and needed to be replaced. he suggested your website and i have found numerous other people with the same problem. ford needs to do something about this, it seems to be getting out of hand. i hope you can pressure them into standing behind their product and do what is fair.

Driving our 99 ford taurus when we had a sudden blowout and sagging on the left front. the strut spring had ruptured, also puncturing the tire. new front struts and tires totalled over $1100. luckily, we were traveling at low speed when this occured. one month later i discover that ford had recalled vehicles including our type for that very problem. we were never notified. the ford customer relations person (jasmine) said that because they did not have a 'profile' on us, we were not notified. we have lived at the same address since 1991 and have owned this car for years. any secretary of state office would have had our info, yet no genuine notification attempt was made. i learned that ford extended warranty coverage for that problem but the time and/or mileage on our car now slightly exceeded the limit. i phoned the nhtsa roughly 3 weeks ago. a lady took down my complaint and stated that someone would contact me by phone or email. i have received neither. i emailed ford customer service and my reply was that there was no pending actions or adjustments regarding my vehicle. when this problem first surfaced ford apparently took the east way out and only notified people they had on record as owners. if notified, i would have immediately had them repair the car. no notification, no repair and our well- being was put in danger as a result. we were not hurt but i would like ford to live-up to their responsibility and cover the damage cost as should have been the case anyway. i would like your input on this before i proceed furthur. please advise. thank you. al manente.

I was driving down the road at 55 mph when i heard a big bang and my car was headed to the other lane of the road. i tried getting the car under control, when i hit a mail box and my air bag deflated. i was then thrown up into the air and ran straight into a pile of hard wood logs. there were about 40 logs sitting in the pile. i hit half way up the pile which sent a log through the windshield and directly into my face. i was knocked out cold. when i awoke i found the ambulance crew trying to remove me from the vehicle. the car hit so hard that it folded it almost in half. thank god i am still alive but i lost all my front teeth, my collar bone was pulled out the socket, i had whiplash, my back was hurt and is still bothering me to this day. i still have flashbacks from this day. i must to had a guardian angle with me that day because people still cannot believe how i walked away from that accident that day. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated that recall # 04v332000 was received. after receiving the recall the contact went to the dealer for them to put guards on the springs of the front of the vehicle. however after a few weeks the springs fractured while driving 30 mph. after the incident the contact took the car to a service dealer. the dealer replaced the springs and the mounts of the springs. the dealer paid for the cost of the labor and the new springs but did not pay for the mounts of the springs. at the present time the vehicle vibrates so much in the front part the contact feels the vehicle is useless.

I have a 1999 ford taurus. my car was recalled in december of 2004 for the coil springs to have a cover placed on them to prevent corrosion and breakage. i had the recall done and shortly afterwards started noticing a loud clunk and bang from the right front while performing a turn. i brought the car back to the ford dealer who performed the recall and had them check the front coil springs. they claimed they are okay. a year has passed and the noise has progressively gotten worse. based on the ford dealer telling me that the coil spring is okay, i decided to purchase four new struts in hopes of rectifying the loud clunk. the noise is still there even after replacing the struts. they cost me $650.00. now i feel i may have wasted that money. i visited a ford taurus forum on the internet and found out that quite a few people are experiencing the same problem. this is a serious issue especially if the spring fails on a highway. *nm

I own a 1999 ford taurus with 53,000 miles. i received a safety recall notice regarding a front coil spring defect in august of 2004. this notice said that i would be contacted again in december for details on getting shields installed around the coil springs which would prevent potential puncturing of front tires if the coil springs broke. december came and went and in february i received another notice from ford stating that the shields were not available yet and i would be contacted again in march. as fate would have it a coil spring broke in february, puncturing and immediately deflating a brand new tire. thank god it happened in my driveway. i don't even want to think about what could have happened if it broke while driving down the highway with my whole family in the car. as i went through the repair process, my local ford dealer tried to do whatever they could to make me happy. however, i ended up having to call ford motor company in detroit and found them to be totally arrogant. they appear to be looking at this from a dollars and cents point of view, rather than the huge safety hazard it is. worst of all, they are really dragging their heels on getting this problem fixed in an expedient manner. although i have owned ford products for the past 18 years, i can't see this continuing given their lack of urgency relative to product defects jeopardizing the safety of their customers. *jb

I was notified by mail by ford motor company in august of 2004 of a recall of my 1999 taurus regarding the coil springs. the recall # is 04s17/04m04. the notice stated that in certain high corrosion areas the front springs could fracture and rupture the tire. it was anticipated that in december 2004, kits would be available to the ford dealers to install over the springs to prevent tire rupture. on tuesday dec. 21, 2004, i brought in the car to the dealer for routine service (90,000 miles). i asked about the kit and was told that none were available at this time. the service advisor stated that i would be notified when they are in, but i should be ok. after the car was serviced, i brought the car home on wednesday, dec. 22, 2004. it then stayed in the garage at home until tuesday morning dec. 28,2004. at that time, i started the car to go to work. when i put the car in reverse, there was a loud bang, and the car tilted to the driver's side. i got out and found that the tire had popped. i had aaa come to fix the tire. they found that the spring had fractured and punctured the tire. ford took care of everything that was damanged (replaced both front end parts and the tire) promptly. my concern with the recall is that others may not not be as fortunate as i to have the spring break and the tire ruputure in the garage. had this happened at freeway speeds, the outcome may have been tragic. i believe ford needs fix these vehicles asap in order to prevent what could be tragic situations.*ak

1999 ford taurus --upon entering the vehicle a very loud bang was heard. no damage was noted after inspecting the vehicle. apparently the front spring/coil broke into two pieces - we are told this is highly unusual and almost always due to a manufacturer defect. upon attempting to move the car, the tire was subsequently gashed into two pieces also and the car abruptly went down on the passenger front side, and eventually towed away. fortunately the car was in very slow motion at the time of the break of the front spring. i have read about other owners that had this occur and thought i better make you aware that yet another has occurred. *ak

Driver side coil spring failure resulting in puncture of driver side tire. car repaired at dealer. both srings and left strut bearing replaced. ford declined to cover any cost. this was my wife's car and frequently carries the family, luckily failure was at low speed and did not put my family at risk but my feeling is ford has a serious safety issue in a design which allows for a drive tire puncture to occur. i still have coil spring that failed. *la

The driver's side front coil spring broke and the sharp broken edge sliced the tire of our 1999 ford taurus sedan, vin #1fafp53u7xa282472. the bottom of the car suddenly dropped and the tire blew out. we were very, very lucky that this occurred while my wife was slowly backing out of our driveway. there were no injuries or other consequential damage to the vehicle. but it was a terrifying close miss with a horrific catastrophe. if the spring had broken only a short time later, it is extremely likely that my wife and several others would have been killed or at least seriously injured. she was just starting on a drive into boston via route i93, a heavily used expressway. imagine what would have happened if the spring had broken while the car was moving at expressway speed and surrounded by other fast moving vehicles. we purchased the car april 25, 2000 from hewlett packard company where it had been used as a company car assigned to one of the managers. the odometer read 5,352 then. most of our driving has been done around suburban boston where the roads are well surfaced and maintained. one week prior to the incident (may 28) the car had been serviced by iversen ford, 257 boston road, north billerica, ma. the front stabilizer bars and left inner axle seal had been replaced. i have the broken spring and the original unbroken spring from the passenger side in my possession. i also have photographs of the spring and slashed tire. ford refused to analyze the broken spring despite two letters urging them to do so. ford also refused to pay for the spring replacement. as far as i can determine, ford has not seriously investigated this matter either with regard to defects in the coil spring itself or with regard to service procedures that could lead to spring failures. *jb

While attempting to back out of a parking space behind my house, the drivers side front coil spring broke. this caused the drivers side front tire to puncture and instantly lose all pressure. about one ring of the coil broke off and the coil remaining on the car had the sharp end that pierced the tire.

The left front coil spring snapped. my car had only 51,377 miles. i had to have both coil springs, 2 gas struts, 2 upper pivot strut mounts, 2 sway bar links, and 1 continental left front tire with only 5,000 miles on it replaced. it cost $ 1,204.93. it would be nice to get reimbursed for it. i've heard this has happened on several ford models. the place that i took it to said they did a taurus for the same exact reason the week before.*ak

Our county agency purchased two ford taurus vehicles new, in 1998 and 1999. at the end of february 2003 within one week of each other the drivers side front coil springs fractured and punctured the tire. in research i have discovered that there were recalls in 1998 on the 1993 ford taurus and in 2001 on the 1998 ford contour and mercury mystique, however i see no recalls concerning this problem with the 1998 and 1999 ford taurus. i would appreciate an investigation into this concern with the 1998 and 1999 ford taurus. i believe there is an obvious problem with the coil springs on these vehicles as well. thank you.*jb

Sping broke on straight , two lane road which was recently resurfaced. i heard a loud explosive noise and then my car immediately went left of center into opposite lane. i gained control and brought the car back into my lane and noticed that my left front corner was extremely low . fortunately, i did not touch the brake pedal and i could feel that the tire was still inflated. i decided to let the car slow down slowly since there was no traffic visible and on the right side of the road was a wide grassy area. at this time , the left front tire blew because the spring had cut the inside of the tire and sent me slightly into the other lane again. i gently tapped the brakes and stopped. it was a blessing that it happened there at 5 a.m. and no vehicles were in the oncoming lane at that time. in another 5 minutes i would have been entering i-96 eastbound at 70 mph with a lot of fast traffic. if i were in a serious accident because of this failed or defective part, the investigation would focus on me. was i drinking? was i under the influence of drugs? did i fall asleep at 5 a.m.? did i have a heart attack? was i using my cell phone? michigan law states that the owner of a vehicle that is involved in an accident is liable. my name is on the title. ford says that there are programson front springs on some vehicles but not mine. all damage was covered only because i had purchased ford premium extended service contract. all of this is not good enough for me . i hope this serves as a catalyst in getting to the bottom of ford's spring problem that exists on our highways. when i was picking my car up at the dealer today, a 1997 contour just arrived with a cracked front spring. perhaps this was a freak coincidence, for all of the 8 or 9 ford dealers that i spoke to before i decided who would do the repair, assured me that this never happened before or rarely happened. i doubt it. thank you for your time and i hope to hear from someone soon. *ak

I was turning left onto a street when left front spring broke causing damage to strut and stabilizer link. this seems to a very dangerous thing to be failing on a vehichle and through research i know i am not the first owner of a taurus to expierience this failure. it makes me wonder how long until the right spring goes. ford should recall these vehichles and repair the problem before someone dies and not after.they should also have to reimburse repair cost to anyone who has had to have their springs replaced.*ak
