While driving the car at a low speed, deer ran out in front of me and i braked to stop and at that time the car surged and accelerated at a high speed which caused me to lose control of the car and hit a tree head on. i pressed the brakes as hard as i could and the speed would not decelerate. i suffered a large head injury that required 54 staples to close the wound. i spent over a week in the hospital, including an icu stay. this car is dangerous and is causing injuries and possible deaths.

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 ford taurus. at 43,400 miles, the automatic transmission was rebuilt at the cost of $1,400. within a year, it had to be rebuilt a second time at no charge. on september 22, 2008, the transmission was rebuilt for the third time at 53,600 miles. the repair shop stated that the transmission was defective and needed to be completely replaced. while driving various speeds, the transmission skips second gear and the vehicle jerks often. the contact does not drive on the highway, only in town. she noticed that the vehicle is at 5,000 rpm when driving. the accelerator pedal is extended to the floor, but the vehicle only accelerates between 5-10 mph. the vehicle speed sensor also had to be replaced. the contact retrieved her vehicle from the repair shop on september 24, 2008. the failure mileage was 56,408.

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 ford taurus. the contact stated that the service engine soon light illuminated on the instrument panel. a mechanic replaced the oxygen sensor; however, the light still illuminated. the contact was informed that there was a misfire on the #6 cylinder. in addition, there was a lot of smoke when the vehicle was started. he took the vehicle to a mechanic and they stated that the possible cause of the failure was antifreeze entering the motor. the mechanic also suggested that there was a potential issue with the head gasket, which would cost between $1,500-$2,500 to repair. also, the vehicle would not decelerate if the contact removed her foot from the accelerator pedal; therefore, he would have to apply the brakes instead. the mechanic informed him that the vehicle would coast due to the cruise control. the contact also experienced issues with the fuel system using more gasoline than he believed was necessary. for errands around town, the vehicle would use a half of a tank. the headlights had a dingy color on the inside. he attempted to get another lens cap for it, but could not change it because it was plastic. the contact would have to purchase another headlight to correct the issue. the manufacturer could not assist because the vehicle was close to ten years old. the contact also noticed that the vehicle would accelerate on its own and slip into another gear. lastly, there was an issue with the instrument panel gauges dimming intermittently. the current mileage was approximately 118,000 and failure mileage was 117,400.

Subject vehicle is a 1999 ford taurus, manufactured in september, 1998. the mileage traveled is 111,000. i was proceeding at 20 to 25 mph behind a logging truck. we approached a stop sign. i braked. the car continued to proceed slowly forward, but the antilock brakes engaged and the car continued to roll slowly forward. i heard a roar, and thought the engine and transmission were moving the car forward, so slipped the transmission in neutral. the rpm raced to 4000 to 4500. i shut off the engine, then re-started. the remainder of the 15 mile commute was uneventful. this is the route i have traveled to work for 14 years. it is rural. i am the original owner of the vehicle. i checked recall 98v204000. the retainer clip is in place. the throttle feels normal. i am a licensed mechanical engineer. *tr the consumer stated the accelerator cable and linkage are okay at both ends. updated 09/12/07 *tr

At various times (since 34000 miles) the engine will rev but not move forward. sometimes i have to pull over and stop the vehicle altogether and restart, or run the engine hoping it will shift into gear. always happens at first gear, the rpm needle is at the top of the dial and the odomoter needles sticks and doesn't move. i have had a few close calls already when coming out into intersections. have had the vehicle checked at two different dealerships and am told a repair cannot be made until they are able to duplicate the problem. this problems is going to get me killed. i am now at 53000 miles and it continues to get worse. where can i get some assistance. the first 3 checks on this problem occured while the car was still under warranty.*ak

My husband and i have been experiencing sporadic engine surge when applying the brakes on our 1999 ford tarus. i have to apply a great deal of pressure to stop the car. this occurs with the engine is hot or cold, on highway driving and street driving. i reported this to wantagh ford and the service department could not find anything wrong with my car. this problem started about 4 months ago. i called wantagh ford and reported the problem again and they told me to bring the car in when it happens. unfortunately, it happens when wantagh ford is closed or i am out of state and too far away from the dealer. it happened again today sunday, november 12, 2000 driving at 20mph when the engine was cold. this problem has also been reported to ford area customer service. my husband and i feel this is a very serious problem and the next time it happens the brakes will not be able to hold the car and could cause serious injury or a death. please help us, as we are afraid to drive the car. *ak

During low speed operation, at the 1st to 2nd shift/engagement point, with no throttle, the engine rpms increase (200-500 rpm) resulting in an abrupt increase in vehicle speed. this typically occurs in parking lots and during stop and go driving. this drivability issue creates a severe hazard in the close quarters scenario i have described.

Cruise control failed to maintain set speed on downhill highway. as a matter of fact, the speed increased from 55 to 85. since it was a new car, and no other cars on the state highway at the time, i did not realize the increase in speed since there were open fields on both sides of the road. when i notified the seller, i was told that it is marked so in the owner's manual. my basic question is, who reads the manual before actually having a problem? i believe the words, cruise control should not be used ssince the word control is misleading if the car gains speed on a downward slope. or at least, the seller should notify the purchaser with a big notation that this is so. the failure of this knowledge led to my getting a costly speeding ticket from the new york state police. *ak

The taurus has experienced many instances of: 1) unwanted acceleration at slow speeds in heavy traffic. this is characterized by excessive creep from standstill, a shift to second gear with a sudden lurch forward. unable to maintain slow speeds without foot on brake. 2) no engine braking. the taurus will not slow down with at all when all pressure is removed from the accelerator....as if on cruise control. 3) excessive speed increase when driving down a grade, no matter how slight. driving on neighborhood streets, the car will accelerate by 15 mph or more with no pressure on gas pedal. this necessitates riding the brake frequently.*ak
Was driving vehicle with cruise control engaged. pressed on accelerator to release cruise control which failed to release. vehicle continued at same speed. applied brakes to slow vehicle down. moved to side of road & turned vehicle off. restarted vehicle & cruise control was no longer engaged. *ak
Upon shifting vehicle into gear vehicle accelerated without applying force to the accelerator pedal, causing unwanted speed. also, the rpms raced very high. consumer has contacted dealer. dealer has yet to determine the cause of the problem. please provide any further details. *ak

Vehicle will not decelerate after you have removed your foot from the accelerator. at highway speeds can take a half mile or more for speed to reduce even while going up an incline. requires extra braking force to cause vehicle to stop. the required harder application of brakes causes the front end to dive and creates steering problems. in stop and go traffic, the vehicle requires the driver to apply brakes almost continuously to prevent car from accelerating when the driver does not want it to. the car does not slow when driver is no longer pressing accelerator.

Vehicle began surging and slight acceleration on its own when foot off of gas pedal. replaced alternator. two days later, service engine soon light blinks off and on when car idles rough and has no power to accelerate. dealership could not find out problem. took car back again 3 days later same problem. replaced pcm and fuel injector. two days later, again same problem occurs. dealership can't find problem.
The throttle will not return to idle when gas pedal is applied causing the driver to have to apply the brakes excessively. dealer cant find problem. mjs

Decelerates poorly (won't slow down) when removing foot from accelerator (gas pedal); especially speeds above 50 mph. can be reproduced with the transmission in od after the car is warmed up. might even be worse on colder days (less than 50 deg f). it's like the speed control is on; the rpms on the tachometer don't drop, and the car continues at the same speed or even accelerates! you can't coast down, it requires braking to slow the car down. it also seems to take longer to stop - when braking - because of the engine working against the brakes. on roads that have a slight decline, it requires you to brake often to maintain the posted speed limit. driving this car is just unnerving; i'm not used to using the brakes so much. i've taken my car back to my ford dealer twice for this problem. on the first visit (3/16/99), the service manager took my car for a drive and agreed my car had a problem. he then gave me an appointment for the second visit when i left the car to be worked on. later that day, he called me at work to tell me apolgetically, that ford considered this normal; needless to say i was very disappointed. he left me a copy of ssm#12066 (special service message) that states: 1998-1999 taurus/sable 1998 & 1999 taurus/sable 3.0l 2-valve, 4-valve and sho vehicles calibrated with increased air flow at closed throttle to prevent tip-in-bumps. a result may be reduced deceleration feel and less engine rpm reduction at closed throttle with the vehicle moving....no repair should be attempted for these symptoms as they are normal. since ford has an ssm that addresses these symptoms others must also have complained about this. my wife owns a 1997 ford taurus, with exactly the same motor and transmission and it does not have this problem. it decelerates when you lift your foot off the accelerator under all conditions. i've already contacted ford by letter and have talked to them on the phone. i have little confidence that they will be fix it.

Accelleration with no pressure on gas pedal (foot completely off pedal) and no engine braking. the unwanted acceleration occurs mostly at slow speeds such as in heavy stop and go traffic and in parking lots. after accelererating slightly, if i remove my foot from the gas pedal at around 10 mph, the car will frequently continue to accelerate, and then shift into second gear, at which time it lurches forward. it will continue to accelerate to over 20 mph before starting to gradually slow down. this occurs frequently when driving in crowded parking lots and requires constant use of the brakes to compensate. if there is any downgrade, no matter how slight, the car will continue to speed up. this in fact, is evident at any speed....driving in my neighborhood at 25 mph, the car will accelerate to over 40 mph on a very, slight downgrade. i must use the brakes constantly. driving on most roads, i notice that i am always catching up to cars in front of me, and having to apply the brakes, while no other cars have brake lights on. the dealer's service manager test drove the car and verified the problem. the mechanic however, stated that this was the way the car was designed and that he could do nothing to correct the problem. *ak
