Odi's analysis identified a high complaint rate for the rear coil springs in the salt belt states (approximately 250 per 100,000 vehicles).approximately 59 percent of the complaints alleged that the coil spring failure caused damage to the adjacent rear tire, with about half of these (30 percent of total complaints) alleging that the damage resulted in air loss.because air loss from a rear tire can result in changes in vehicle handling characteristics, odi examined field data, test data and interviewed consumers to assess the safety consequences of such failures in the subject vehicle population.analysis of all available field data did not identify any crashes or injuries resulting from the alleged defect in the subject vehicles.vrtc testing conducted to simulate a coil spring induced rear tire failure did not result in a loss of vehicle control.when interviewed by odi, none of the consumers who experienced incidents of tire air loss due to the alleged defect indicated that the failures caused a loss of vehicle control.tire damage resulting from the alleged defect has involved rubbing/abrasive wear of the inner tire sidewall with the potential for air loss from pin-hole sized leaks in the wear groove.there is no evidence that the alleged defect has caused any sudden, catastrophic tire failures in either straight or turning maneuvers.a safety-related defect has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist.the agency will monitor this issue and reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.see document file for additional information regarding this resume.

The front, left coil spring broke leaving a jagged edge that shredded the tires sidewall when the car was put in reverse. i do not know exactly when the spring broke, but i was driving on the freeway prior to parking the vehicle. had this happened on the freeway, the results could have been disastrous. the tire that was shredded was a near new studded snow tire. the total cost to repair the suspension and replace the tire will be about 400 - 500 dollars. *tr

Front passenger coil spring fractured. this was an item that was covered by recall 04m04. the fix was to install a cheap plate to prevent the coil spring from puncturing the tire when it cracks. the recall included a prevision to replace a broken spring if the vehicle was in service less than 10 years or less than 150,000. i am disappointed that the corrective action was not to fix the coil spring itself before it would break.

Front springs on my 2001 ford taurus station wagon have broken, within a few months of each other. i thought that the problem was not common, but when i did some research on the internet i discovered that a recall notice was supposed to have been sent out in 2004. i did not receive that recall, even thought the car was registered with ford. note - these were clean breaks and not a result of the gradual deterioration of metal due to rust (caused by winter salt). the problem has not caused a crash, but my research found that in many cases the faulty springs broke through the spring seat and rupture the front tire. this problem has been documented as - 2000 ford taurus recall id from nhtsa: 04v332000 auto recall date: 20040715. although that defect applied to a model year 2000 taurus, the problem occurs in other model years. this is a serious safety hazzard, particularly if the spring ruptures a front tire when the car is being driven on a highway. the problem has also been reported on rear springs, which have also punctured the tires. as such it should be mandatory for ford to issue a recall notice to all owners of taurus automobiles. this has not been done and will not be done unless nhtsa demands it.

I have a 2001 ford taurus se. all four of the suspension coil springs are broken and one of the broken springs had an end which protrued and had rubbed a groove into the tire (inside rear) portion damaging the sidewall of my tire rendering the tire useless.

I have a problem with my 2001 ford taurus that i feel is a safety issue. my concern with my vehicle is that i discovered that it has three broken springs, one of which came very close to causing damage to my tire, i discovered this after i heard a loud noise from the front of the car. upon investigating i discovered a broken front spring. following this i discovered both rear springs were broken as well. i thought it was very odd to have three broken springs on the same car. researching this problem on the web i found this to be a very common problem. i contacted a ford dealer for service and was informed that ford has extended the warranty period for the front springs but not the rear. i feel this is a safety issue and should require ford to recall and fix this problem. observing how close the spring was to making contact with the tire i feel there could have been severe consequences should the spring cause sudden tire failure. i believe that a springs sudden failure would have the potential to cause handling problems as well. again, three spring failures? it would appear this may be a manufacturing problem such as a defective heat treating process or inferior steel used in the manufacturing of the springs. *dt

I bought my 2001 ford taurus used, in 2004 it has been a good car until 2008 when it started shaking in the front end. i took it to the mechanic and they told me it was a rack and pinion, so i had that replaced and paid through the nose. the car was still shaking, i took it back he said that i had to get it aligned because it was towed out and he did not have the equipment to do that. i replaced the now bald tired and had it aligned. still shaking and now worse, i am now unemployed and can not afford to take the car to the shop and the warranty on the mechanic i took it to is up and he says it is my responsibility to pay for him to look at it further. when i had it aligned they did tell me that the rods and the struts were fine. so what exactly could this be? after 40 mph the steering wheel shakes like crazy and there is a whirling noise coming from the wheels. please help. *tr

My both front and both back spring coils broke in my car. no-one ever notified me about recall for my car models. i am lucky that didn't got into any accidents. my tires are less than 2 year old and are junk because of the springs damaging them. now i will have to purchase another tires, and it will cost me a money i don't really prepared to spend right now. i found out about recall on springs coil on my car by overhearing someone talking about it. i am really disappointed about that. do ford really waiting for someone to get into accident to fix their problems? *tr

I had my car towed to my mechanic because my tire was shredded. later i found out that the tire shredded due to the failure of the rear coil springs. my mechanic told me that the front was also in poor condition and should not drive the car much longer. i called ford and they told me the front was under recall. i dropped he car off to stoneham ford who told me that since they were not currently fractured they would not replace them. they would not tell me the current condition yet my mechanic states they are in very poor condition. ford continued to say that since they are not fractured and no one has yet been hurt, they are not replacing them. no one has been killed yet.*tr

2001 ford taurus, 112,000 miles. driving about 35 mph on highway interchange, heard loud bang and car pulled left and i gained control and stopped. found left front coil spring broke puncturing left tire. took car to dealership for repair. ford will cover cost of front springs replacement. dealership called and said right spring was broken also and transmission pan was also punctured from broken spring and needed replaced. ford will not cover cost to pay for punctured tire or transmission pan plus fluid. tire had around 300 mile on it. ford garage called back and said rear springs were also broken and not covered under recall from ford. shouldn't rear springs be covered also since breakage was result of corrosion problem like the front springs? also, shouldn't the collateral damage to the tire and transmission be covered also? never received any form of notification relating to this recall. but i had receive other recall for wiring problems. *tr

2001 ford taurus with 69,000 miles has a broken rear coil spring. there is a problem with the front coils which ford will fix no charge under 04m04 customer satisfaction guarantee but it does not cover the rear springs. in the event of the back spring working it's way to the tire there has been rear tire blowouts with extensive damage to the vehicle itself and a danger to the driver and passengers. at this time my mother was informed that this was being looked into as a mandatory recall. i feel since they have had problems with the front and have acknowledged the defect that there is also a problem with the rear springs of those same years. parts required to correct problem are new coils both sides. we took it to the dealership and the service manager said he thinks there should be a mandatory recall but he did not have the authority to make that decision and referred me to you. the cost to my mother which is on a fixed budget is 600.00 and she cannot afford it. the service manger advised her to get it fixed before it caused numerous problems which would not be covered even though the damage occurred from the broken coil spring. at this time there has not been any dangerous occurrences but there are a possibility of them happening at any time. please look closer at this dangerous situation and make it mandatory to have ford motor company fix this problem. thank you brad farrow *tr

I had 3 broken coil springs on my car at one time. i learned there was a recall on the front coil springs, but not on the back. i have also learned that the cause of the fault on the coil springs was salt on the road, which is what caused my front and rear coil springs to break. i believe there should be a recall on the rear coil springs, as well as the front. i called ford's complaint department, and they said this would not be changed. then, i had broken shock absorbers, which my ford garage told me was a result of the coil springs. so not only did i have to pay for the rear coil springs, but i also have to pay to repair the shock absorbers! the garage manager said he has had numerous cases like this -- in fact, he had two in the shop in the same week. *tr

Failure/fracture of front suspension coil springs and related tire damage. my car was repaired as far as the front suspension is concerned under warranty only for springs. my concern is future spring failure on rear suspension which is known to have similar failures with no safety recall in effect at this time. despite the nhtsa tests on similar vehicle defect, i am not convinced that the potential for a loss of vehicle control incident is unlikely. i wonder if one of the nhtsa persons responsible for the test information would let me trade vehicles with them. would they be willing to drive this car for extended use on crowded interstate highways in all weather conditions like so many of us do? the parts in question fail because of corrosion. in most cases the spring breaks at the lower first coil, ford has installed a shield to prevent related tire damage per nhtsa campaign id number: 04v332000 here is my point as plainly as i can put it. these springs will corrode at any location due to stone chips or other surface imperfections. as a result these springs have the potential to break at any location rendering the shield at the lower coil useless. the result could be a loss of vehicle control regardless of which, front or rear, position. should not ford motor company be mandated to at least inspect these parts for corrosion in other than the common point of failure, and if necessary replace them? ford has introduced replacement springs with improved corrosion resistant coatings, but in the case of the rear suspension springs on the same vehicles known to have similar failures, there is no current consumer protection mandated. please tell me that you are going to correct this issue. isn't it obvious that at best this problem is only half corrected! since when is that good enough? thanks for all your successes in the matter of motor vehicle safety! i hope this issue will soon be added to the list. bob zamost *tr

I bought a new ford taurus in 2001. three months after my purchase, a vibration began in the front end. i took the car in and had repairs. to my dismay, the car began to vibrate again in january 2002. i took my car in for repairs again. april 2002 the same problem occurred again, so more repairs. this continued until i gave the car back (july 2004) due to these problems and many others. the dealership, silsbee ford, seemed to only fix the problem temporarily, resulting in me returning the vehicle again and again. i believe there was an underlying problem that was overlooked and i assumed taking the car to a dealership the problem would have been found and properly fixed. by mar 2003 appr. 21,000 miles one cv shaft and axle seal replaced, rod asy replaced at 38,000 miles, and by jan 2004 the other cv axle was replaced. this car has had three sets of tires before 60,000 miles, new rotors at appr. 38,000 miles. the rotors have been turned a number of times before replacing. consumers need to be informed of makeshift repairs done at dealerships. i turned in my car to the company because it was getting too dangerous to drive and obviously the dealership wasn't competent enough to find the underlying problem. i have tried many different avenues trying to resolve this situation and the ford company keeps stating the warranty is out. i know this but the problem is, my vehicle should have been repaired properly the first time or at least the second time it was in the shop for repairs, while under warranty. i believe my family was endangered because of the negligence of this company. *jb

We noticed the lower half of the car is covered with small rust spots 44000 miles. we do not have an estimate on fixing this problem. at 39000 miles we began experiencing a rattle under the right front passenger floor board. this has been inspected and nothing has been found so far, however the rattle continues to grow worse. just under 30000 miles the front brakes required replacment. new rotors and brake pads were installed, however within a weeks time the car was back in for more brake work. the pads were replaced by the shop, but the sqeaking has returned again.( we did not have the brakes repaired at the ford dealership, because we were told that this was not covered under warranty.) the fuel gauge reads erracticly between full and 1/4. i have made no attempt to have this fixed yet. the engine has developed a hard starting problem within the last few weeks. it will crank and not start. then after a couple of attempts, it will start but idle rough.

The anti-sway bars on my ford taurus ses have come loose on three separate occasions. the bars came loose at 10,000 miles, 16,000 miles, and most recently at 50,000 miles. since the latest repair (at 50,000 miles) is now allegedly out of warranty the dealer want $140 to fix the problem again. and there is no guarantee that this problem will not continue to resurface. i argued with the dealer and the manufacturer (ford customer relations) that this is an ongoing problem and a defect, not a new problem. the bars should not be coming loose on their own. it is important to note that on the second repair attempt (at 16,000 miles) the dealer installed a special kit that they received from ford to fix this problem. this is evidence that the manufacturer and the dealer are aware of a generalized problem and that sway bars are coming loose on this car model (2001 taurus ses) and perhaps on many others that share the same sway bar design. nhtsa should investigate the safety issue involved in loose sway bars on the ford taurus. nhtsa should also investigate the attempt by ford and the ford dealers to make customers pay for repairs that never resolve the problem. if ford and the dealers are allowed to claim that this repair is out of warranty then all they have to do is sit and wait until the warranties expire and all defects become a customer-paid repair.*ak

2001 ford taurus ses left front spring snapped. this was discovered at ~95,000 miles and 10 weeks after the ford extended recall program expired. the end of the spring was sitting in the small well at the bottom of the spring and the broken end was very rusty. about 3 snapped off the top end of the spring. online research indicates this is a very common problem and many people report that the spring punctures a tire and causes suspension and frame damage. i will need to have the springs, along with the struts, bushings, etc. replaced. both of my rear springs were also broken and were replaced (at my own expense) in may, 2010.

There was very little warning to the failure. the vehicle drove fine until one day it developed a clunk in the front that was worse than the several that were already there. about this same time the steering began to feel sloppy as well. when i looked under the car the front sub-frame was rusted to the point where the a-arm disconnected itself from the sub-frame. the front of the a-arm is now floating free. this is the cause of the steering slop. the only way to fix this problem is to replace the entire sub-frame. this is the frame that holds the engine, transmission and suspension to the vehicle. the vehicle is no longer safe to drive.

My most recent contact with ford was highly unpleasant and discouraging. i own a 2001 ford taurus with 80,000 miles that had 2 front coil springs and 1 rear coil spring break. i contacted ford customer service to inquire what i needed to do regarding the recall on the coil springs; i gave my vin # to the agent and was told that this car does not have any recalls and ford could not offer me any service for the broken springs. i then contacted airport ford in florence, ky and explained what i was told by ford customer service and the 3 broken coil springs, they told me i could not be helped since ford customer service said that there was not any recalls on this vehicle. recall 04v332000 recalled the front coil springs and extended the warranty to 10 years or 150,000 mile, which this car is still covered. rather than continue driving an unsafe vehicle, i decided to get the car fixed. i had the coil springs, wheel bearings, ball joints, tie rods, drive shafts, and rotors replaced on this car. the 2 broken front coil springs destroyed each of these components by placing unnecessary stress on these components. the rear coil spring was inches away from puncturing the tire of this vehicle; this was an accident waiting to happen. i believe that at a minimum the front coil springs should have been replaced by ford due to the recall and extended warranty on these fractured springs; this cost me $343.12. i feel that ford should cover the total cost of this repair to make this vehicle whole again at my cost of $986.28. ford motor company

The front suspension on my 2001 ford taurus has both coils broken. there is a customer satisfaction recall on this problem for 10 years or 150,000. my vehicle has 170,000 miles. if this was a safety recall then there would be no limit. i believe this should be a safety issue. the coils can easily slide loose causing steering to be jammed with loss of control and/or tire damage resulting in very rapid lose of tire compression. both situations have a high likely hood of resulting in an accident.

2001 ford taurus rear spring coils. why isn't there a recall for the rear spring coils, when there is a recall for the front spring coils? the same problem happens with the rear spring coils that happens with the front spring coils. tires are exploding! this is extremely dangerous!!!!!!! ford needs to take responsibility for this problem! *tr

We own a 2001 ford taurus with about 28,000 miles on this vehicle. i am handicap and this is the vehicle that we use to get me to appointments, etc. we are very lucky that the front tire exploded while my husband was backing out of our driveway and not while we were already driving on the highway or where ever! we had the car towed to our mechanic and he told us that the tire exploded because of the front spring coil. once we found out the cause, i looked on the internet for any issues or recalls for this problem, and low and behold there is a recall because of the front spring coils. we then had the vehicle towed to the ford dealership that we bought the car from. they are fixing the car now. yesterday we were told by the dealership that there is a problem with the rear spring coils and that they also need to be replaced. there is not a recall on the rear spring coils, even though i have been researching this issue for the last few days and it appears that ford should have an active recall on the rear spring coils. ford needs to step up and issue a recall for the rear spring coils. we have been told the ford will not pay for the tire that exploded (btw: the 2 front tires were just replaced this past summer) and they won't pay for the rear spring coils to be replaced, even though they have to be replaced! i thought that ford made safe vehicles, but i now know that is not the case. ford needs to do something before something serious happens to somebody. i am extremely disappointed!!! *tr

Front and rear spring coils are damaged. my husband was backing out of our driveway an as he did, the front driver's side tire exploded. we had the car towed to a mechanic and we were told that the spring coil punctured the tire. we were then informed that all of the coil needed to be replaced not just the front coils. after we found out about the front coils, we contacted ford and we were told to bring it to a dealership because the front coils were covered because of a recall. once we got the car to a dealership, they then told us that there was an issue with the rear coils and that the rear coils were that covered under the recall. i have been doing a lot of research and i have found out that all of the coils need to be replaced. fyi: we have a 2001 ford taurus with 28,000 miles (yes, that is 28,000 miles). i would like a reason why all there isn't a recall on all of the coils, especially since it appears to be a problem with these cars? also, the both front tires are less than a year old. ford needs to step up to the plate and take responsibility before there are more accidents and maybe even deaths! *tr

I own a 2001 ford taurus. approximately 2 years ago, i was driving to work and heard something drop from my car (at a speed of 20 mph). i stopped my vehicle and walked down the road to find, what appeared to be a part from my vehicle. my husband looked at it, and wouldn't you know, it was my front coil that had busted. i took it into the dealership and they repaired it since there was a recall on the front coils. last week, i was on the freeway and i heard something metal-like fall off my vehicle and my car fishtailed (about 55 mph). i stopped the vehicle on the side of the road and found that a coil had busted yet again. this time, the coil that broke was from the rear and good old ford advised that there is no recall on the rear coils---just the front!are you kidding me? so, in short, there is an apparent problem with the coils on the 2001 ford taurus. i have read through about 200 complaints thus far and decided that something as to be wrong with these coils and i feel that it's the companies responsibilities to resolve these issues. please, do no wait for someone to loose a life in order to issue a recall. *tr

Car experiences vibration at highway speeds and has a rattle in the front end. dealer inspected the vehicle and found the front end link pins to be worn. these pins attach the lower control arm to the frame of the vehicle and in turn, hold the front tires in position. these pins have been replaces twice on this particular vehicle. once at approx 21,000 miles and again at approx 56,000 miles. the dealer says they see this a lot on the taurus and state that ford has now changed the part due to excessive wear. this is a critical component as failure of this part could result in the front wheels coming off the vehicle (per the dealership). again - symptoms are front end vibration, which is not corrected by tire balance. *nm

I received a recall notice from ford motor company on 4/7/08 that my 2001 ford taurus was being recalled to have front anti-corrosion shields installed on the front springs. on 4/8/08 the lt front spring rusted through and punctured the left front tire. had i been driving at the time i would have been pulled into oncoming traffic. i contacted ford customer service and was told sorry the car was out of warranty by 3900 miles even though it was a recall problem. i tried to explain that 4/7/08 was the first notice i received and was told that they had been trying to recall the car since 2004 but had been sending the notices to the previous owner. i purchased the car in 2006. it did not matter that was the first notice i had received. i was told that it was my fault because i had purchased a used vehicle. i was also told they were not responsible because illinois was slow to update their database for ford. i am now responsible for a 900.00 repair bill. had they contacted me in a timely manner, the shields would have been installed in 2006. i was also told that any prudent consumer looks for any recalls on that vehicle on the corporate web site before purchasing the vehicle. this was a safety issue and ford took no responsibility for it. they had a design flaw and are taking no responsibility for it. *tr

Drove the car normally, and it does have some mileage on it, but upon reading online i see that this is a very common failure. failure: rear strut springs cracking or breaking into multiple pieces. i can see where parts where out, but they should not break. rear spring broke and damaged tire (sidewall). if i had been going faster, say highway speeds this could have resulted in a pretty significant accident. i was lucky. there is clearly a defect with such a high number of these springs breaking. thanks lane

I don't know what lead up to the failure of my strut springs on my 2001 ford taurus. i had not hit any potholes, had any extreme weight in the back, or any other issues that could have caused this to happen. i am a fairly good driver with a great driving record. upon replacing my back brakes i was told about my strut springs being broke and they needed to be fixed immediately. the springs had not be broken for very long before having them replaced. the parts alone were $300 (not including labor, the springs are currently being replaced) and due to the broken springs i had to replace both back tires at $100 a piece. an alignment may need to be done now also. the old parts/springs should be available.

Ford has recalled the front suspension springs on my 2001 ford taurus 80000 miles. but my rear spring fractured and nearly cuased an accident with my four children in the car. i feel if the front springs are faulty then the backs are just as dangerous!!

I took my 2001 ford taurus to a local dealer to have a mandatory state inspection performed. the service advisor informed me that one of the rear coil springs was cracked and he said both rear coil springs need to be replaced immediately. i was told to stop driving the vehicle because the broken spring could puncture a tire, causing an accident. new rear coil springs were ordered and will be installed by the dealer on 6/23/10. i will ask to keep the old parts. my car was part of the 04s17 recall for the front coil springs. shields were installed below the front springs on 5/10/05, at 44356 miles. the rear coil springs were not included in this recall, but maybe they should have been.

Rear springs broke while moving in driveway. what would have happened if i was at speed on the highway? should have lasted longer than 72,000 miles. i take good care of this car and had planned to keep it a long time.

Tl-the contact owns a 2001 ford taurus. while having the vehicle serviced for an oil change the contact was informed the passenger side rear coil spring was broken. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer but was not serviced because there was no recall for the rear coil springs. the contact stated his vehicle had previously been serviced for the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 04v332000 but the recall did not include the rear coil springs. the contact also stated that he had his rear driver side coil spring replaced because it was also broken in the past. the failure and current mileages were 88,000. sm.

Both rear springs broken on a 2001 ford taurus ses. while rotating tires, the mechanic noticed that both rear springs were snapped. two new struts with springs were installed at a cost of over $700. the parts are not available, however, i personally saw the left rear spring in the car before it was replaced.

Vehicle is a 2001 ford taurus with a rear coil spring breakage issue. with not just a single broken spring. both rear coil springs are broken resulting in a considerable safety issue. both coil springs broke in the same part of the coil. very costly suspension repairs.

Vehicle is a 2001 ford taurus with a rear coil spring breakage issue. with not just a single broken spring. both rear coil springs are broken resulting in a considerable safety issue. i have managed to catch this problem before having the misfortune of having to replace both rear tires. i am a certified state inspector for the state of pennsylvania and i don't know about you guys but i see this as being a very dangerous and a pricey repair problem that has seemed to be happening quite often in the ford taurus 2001 model. im currently aware that ford recalled the front springs but it seems that the rear springs are exactly the same. there is definitly a durability issue with the front springs and it seems rear springs are made up of the same materials resulting in identicle breakage and the rear coil springs are not to be overlooked. how often do you have a coil spring break on a mid sized car during normal driving? or even both coin springs breaking almost simultaniously? almost never.... i hope that fords rear springs that came stock with the 2001 taurus are put under recall because if not i can only guess that the tire companys are gonna be having many unhappy ford customers heading their way with torn tires from rear coil springs breaking and puncturing tires and also some very costly suspension repairs. i ask you not take this suspension concern lightly. look at toyota. let make sure that ford is aware of this problem and have them issue a recall for these flawed rear coil springs

My 2001 ford taurus rear springs brok, causing the struts to break also. this is the 3rd taurus i have owned that did this. ford did recall on the front springs but not the back spring. this is a safety issue.

Coil springs on the ford taurus are breaking. a recall has been done on the front, but not on the back springs. the springs are made of defective material -- hairline cracks can be seen on the spring. the portion of the spring that separates shows that the crack in the spring has oxidized at points before the complete break. this is not a rust problem!! the metal used for these springs is extremely defective. in the portion that broke on my car lodged in the tire, and i was able to thoroughly inspect the metal and saw many hairline cracks. the front spring broke on my car in feb. 2009 and the rear spring broke in march 2010. i was lucky and was not moving on the highway when the springs broke. my front tire was sliced through and blew out. the front springs were replaced, but i had to pay for the tire. yesterday, my back right rear spring broke. i understand from the recall information the back springs were not recalled. why not?? please have this problem corrected before there is a terrible accident on the highway by an unsuspecting driver of a defective vehicle! at 60 mph, a tire blowing would not allow time for the driver to make any corrective action.

I have a 2001 ford taurus se. all four of the suspension coil springs are broken and one of the broken springs had an end which protrued and had rubbed a groove into the tire (inside rear) portion damaging the sidewall of my tire rendering the tire useless.

Routine driving is suburbs - back coil spring broke in 2001 taurus - this has been a huge issue and ford is not helping out. there is a recall on he front springs, so they were replaced for free, but the back ones cost my 83 year old mother $1000. please doing something about this. my brother had a 2003 and the same thing happened. no recall, so he had to pay all of it. i once had a 2000 and when it broke it blew out the tire and i almost killed me, my family and about 10 other people on the highway. this is as bad as the toyota thing. *tr

2001 ford taurus - 74,000 miles - both rear springs are broken and will have to be replaced. the mechanic said he sees a lot of these broken springs in the taurus line. he said quite often they will tear into the tire and cause severe damage or an accident. *tr

2001 ford taurus. i found a large piece of metal lying on my driveway. i took my car to my local ford dealership and was told rear coil spring was broken. i was told i needed to replace both rear coil springs as well as struts. total bill was 970.00 we were very lucky we noticed the piece of metal on driveway. i understand these broken coil springs are causing rear tire blow-outs! i notified ford motor company and they do not intend to address this issue. *tr

2001 ford taurus rear spring failure . the drivers side rear spring broke and ruined the tire . it almost wore through the side wall of the tire . i think this is a real safety problem . i called ford and to report the problem . at this time their are no recalls for rear springs . *cn

2001 ford taurus model sel . rear coil springs. i purchased this car in 2004 with 35,000 miles and now has 71,000 miles. garage kept, wife drives. there was a recall on the front causing me to have protective shields placed around front coils due to possible blowout if coil broke, obviously some had broke. i had to have both rear coil springs replaced on 2/2/10 at a cost of $390 parts only. i'm 65 years of age and have never had a vehicle with two broken springs on the rear. i submit that one of the coils had shifted and could have blown out rear tire. i don't think dealerships are not seeing these repairs due to age and labor per hour at a dealership. a private mechanic repaired mine and reports having repaired others. i believe these coils on this model are defective , front and rear. nothing has been said about the rear coils or any protective device to prevent a blowout. *tr

*tr
01/08/2010280001

*tr

2001 ford taurus with 52,000 miles. rear coil spring has snapped. just noticed on the annual state inspection. mechanic said i was lucky that it didn't puncture the tire while i was driving. this should be covered under warranty. the front coil springs are covered by a recall. the rear coil springs should also be covered by a recall. the mechanic said the total cost will be about $900. it is getting repaired today because it failed ny state inspection. mechanic said he sees a lot of these rear spring failures. please consider having ford recall the rear springs. *tr

2001 ford taurus left rear coil spring broke while driving 60 mph, end of broken spring cut and shredded tire. replacement cost for new tire and two new quick struts is costing me $1080.00. ford has a recall on the front springs and would replace up to 200,000 miles or ten years. they know they have rear spring problems but up to now are unwilling to do anything about them. *tr

08/20/2009820001
I have a 2001 ford taurus sedan. i replaced the front struts as part of a recall earlier this year. the spring on the front strut broke. a few months after i replaced the front struts, i noticed a noise emanating from the rear of the car. when i got out of the car to see what was wrong, i noticed that the rear of the car was riding much lower than before. i discovered that the spring on the driver-side rear strut had broken, as well. the broken spring had come halfway off of the strut, and the sharp, broken end of the spring was dangerously close to my tire. i still have the strut with the broken spring. i went online to see if other taurus owners were having this same difficulty and found many posts on message boards outlining the same problem. i have now replaced the rear struts. because the rear struts are almost identical to the front struts, and because they are subject to the same failure, i feel that ford should recall the rear struts. *tr
09/11/2009700001
I own a 2001 ford taurus which i purchased brand new. it has less than 70, 000 miles and the rear springs completely rotted out. the service station advised me that i shouldn't even drive the car home because the spring could puncture the tire. it cost $850 to replace the springs and the struts. ford recalled the front but not the back. this is a safety issue and ford should recall the back as well as the front springs. *tr
07/13/2008650001
The events leading up to the failure were not fatal and there wasn't a crash. i was driving and began to hear a rubbing noise in the back tire of my car. when i took the wheel off to inspect the damage the rear coil spring had broke and was rubbing a groove into my tire. i then had to replace both rear springs and both rear tires. i recently took my car into have the rear brakes replaced and was told the springs were once again broken and had to be replaced. i'm have now paid close to $1000 on faulty spring and repair. *tr

2001 ford taurus. march 09, 68,000 miles drivers front coil spring breaks and cuts tire down. july 09, 78,000 miles mechanic finds both rear coil springs similarly broken. i had to replace all 4 springs, struts and 1 tire. luckily, the car was not being driven when springs broke on front end. dont know when the rears broke, but sometime in the last 10k miles or the 4 wheel alignment would have discovered the broken rear springs in march 09. *tr

My 2001 ford taurus with 97,000 miles on it has one front and two rear coil springs broken. i have been informed that the rear ones are not covered. this car has been carefully driven....and ford won't cover it? were the coil springs on the front from a different supplier? made from different steel? where's the logic in this? *tr
07/13/20091
I have a 2001 ford taurus ses. i noticed that the rear end of my car was sitting very low and took it to the mechanic to find out what the problem was. apparently, the rear coil springs are broken due, presumably, to corrosion from salt in northern climate. this appears to be a common problem with this year/model of car. my mechanic told me i was lucky i brought it in when i did as the coils were close to puncturing my tires, which would be very dangerous if this had happened while driving. parts were replaced to fix the problem. there was a recall to have a shield installed for the front coil springs because they had so many problems, but no recall for the rear coil springs. *tr
06/25/2009740001
In march of 2009 i had a front spring blow out on my 2001 ford taurus. at that time ford replaced them under a recall, however ford refused to pay for a new tire which a set of new had been installed in feb. 2009 and the towing bill. now the right rear spring has done the same thing and destroyed another tire. the mechanic at my local ford tells me the repair is 280.00 not including another tire and towing. he also stated to me that ford should have recalled these cars for the rear spring also, because they've had as much trouble as the front. luckily both instances happened at a low speed. i believe it is up to your agency to push for a mandatory recall, before someone driving on a highway get seriously injured or killed! or does the last sentence have to happen first! *tr

10/17/2008810001
We have a 2001 ford taurus that has a broken coil spring in rear of the car. the fractured piece of the spring is right beside the tire in the rear of the car. in addition to this danger when the spring broke it allowed the back of the car to set so far down that you can not even place 1 finger between the top of the tire and the fender weld now. the car would consistantly rub the tires if we try to drive it. i have called ford motor on several occasions about this problem and they told me that they had not had any other complaints about rear spring breakage so there was nothing they could do for me. now however after reading this website i see that i am in a class of owners with the same problems - i do live in ohio which after reading more on your site i realize that we are in the area that this problem seems to be happening to alot. after speaking to a local repair shop about my problems i was shocked to find out that rear coil spring breakage on these taurus's is one of the most seen problems in his shop. please continue your investigation - if it makes ford fix these problems and 1 life is saved - it would be worth all of the complaining and nagging we have had to do to get them to step up and repair their defective parts. *tr

Driving my 2001 ford taurus and realized i had a flat. my husband came to get me and noticed that my rear tire was shredded and my rear springs broke and the jagged metal shredded my tire. i called ford who told me it was covered under something like a recall, but not an actual recall. we drop car off, i then get a call saying it will be $736!!! the service manager said he didn't realize it was my rear tire (not front) when he told me it would be 100% covered. why isn't it covered if all these complaints and they are covering front. my car has a little more than 40,000 miles on it. this was after spending $1200 on air conditioning system last summer and $600 for heater problems this winter. *tr

My husband was driving the vehicle when the rear tire blew making the car undrivable. it was towed to a mechanic who found that both of the rear springs had snapped. i was told that had he been traveling at a higher speed he most assuredly would have either been seriously injured or killed. the cost of the repair so far has totaled almost $900 dollars. ford has acknowledged that they know about this problem and my front springs are also about to snap. ford stated that the front springs are recalled but the rear are not because there have not been any fatalities yet. i hope that it does not take a death or serious injury to get ford or the nhsta to make ford own up to its responsibility. *tr

A noise from the rear of the vehicle lead me to look and find my rear coil springs on both sides are broken. i understand there is a recall on the fronts, but not the rears, which makes no sense. from other complaints i've read, i'm pretty lucky. mine broke near the base, and caused no further damage, but many apparently break in the middle and destroy the tire. just about every taurus i see sags in the back. i'm sure there are a lot more out there that people are driving on and have no idea. *tr

Went to my local ford dealer to take care of a recall notice i had received on my 2001 taurus for broken front springs. while the dealer took care of my front springs they also inspected the rear springs on the car. when they were finished they came out and told me the rear springs are cracked and needed to be replaced but were not covered under the recall. i work in the auto industry dealing with metal parts. i understand the process of heat treating metals and if ford was having problems with the front springs cracking and breaking due to bad heat treating, the rear springs from the same time period should be suspect and also part of the recall.

*tr

I am sending this on behalf of my father who does not have internet access. he owns a 2001 ford taurus that is primarily driven by my mother and only has 26000 miles on it. a few days ago when he was cleaning out his garage he found a piece of metal on floor which he believed was from the car. after taking the vehicle to his local mechanic he was informed that the rear coil spring was broken and needed replaced. after doing some research on your website i found that there is a recall on the front springs but not the rear. i also checked with the dealer where the car was purchased and was told the same thing about the recall for the front but not the rear. i asked the dealer why there would not be a recall for the rear and according to him he thinks there should be but ford has not released one as of yet. both rear springs and swag end links had to be replaced the correct the issue at a cost of about $500. this whole situation is a little disheartening since the vehicle has such low mileage, is a 1 owner, very well maintained and has been garage kept since it was new. *tr

The failure is a broken left rear spring, requiring replacement of both rear springs. the old parts are not available. i would not say that the broken spring in my particular case caused immediate danger as the spring was still in the spring seat, however it is cause to fail a pa state safety inspection, and could have become dangerous if the spring was not replaced. the vehicle had 99,600 miles at the time of the failure. i can't pinpoint any specific events other than almost 100,000 miles of use in the salt belt. it is a common failure on the taurus, and mine broke later than many others. the front springs (which have not broken on my car) are covered under recall...the rears should be as well. *tr

I noticed that after installing four brand new tires on my 2001 ford taurus, that the vehicle pulled to the right dramatically while driving. the alignment was just done as well. i also noticed that the rear of the vehicle sat extremely low. further investigation found that the rear coil spring on the right side had snapped at the base of strut. front springs have a recall, why not the front. i am aware of the problems on this subject as i am formerly a service advisor for ford. this is an all too common problem and does pose a safety problem!!!! this is true as the vehicle fails nysi and makes vehicle undriveable. ford will not repair, yet there are hundreds, if not thousands of the same exact concern. my vehicle is in perfect operating condition and cared for well. this should not happen! apparently until someone dies, ford and the government will not do anything about this. my 2001 impala and my 2002 cavalier both had well over 100k, never had this problem and they were in the salt states their entire operating lives!! there must be something done now please. i am forced to repair the vehicle at my own cost for something that is well known by the government and ford. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2001 ford taurus. in august of 2007, the contact noticed that the tires were wearing for no apparent reason. the rear tires were especially worn. all four tires were replaced. in october of 2008, all four tires were replaced again. a private mechanic diagnosed the vehicle and stated that the rear coil springs caused the rear tires to wear. the repair of the rear coil springs would cost $800. the manufacturer stated that there was no recall for the rear coil springs; therefore, they would not assist with the repair. the vehicle has not been repaired. the current and failure mileages were 100,000.

I had my car inspected today and found out both rear springs on the struts were broken. when researching the problem, i've found out this is common in 2001 taurus sedans. this is a dangerous defect and i don't understand how a recall could be made for the front struts but not the back. a rear tire popping at 73 mph because of a broken spring breaking loose is just as dangerous as a front tire. *tr

Inspection of suspension on my 2001 ford taurus by tire shop on 11 oct 08 revealed both rear springs are broken. internet sites list numerous incidents of tires being punctured by broken springs. i guess not enough people have died in order to force ford to recall this very dangerous condition? you would think ford or the news media would inform the public about this potentially fatal defect. i really can't think of a more serious condition that would justify an organization like yours. thank you dan archer *tr

I have a 2001 ford taurus ses sdn. i looked on fords web site for recalls and to my surprise there where none for rear suspension coil springs, this is the 4th coil spring that has broken on this car and i have only had the car for 4 years. i just drive to and from work with this many breaks there has to be some kind of engineering or parts defect, this should not even be happening , i could see it if i hauled stuff in the car over a period of time again i just drive. i see you have done an investigation and closed your case last year. i tell you that there are alot of other one's that had to been breaking i am sure that none of my 4 have reached your complaints or any other complaints. i am partially disabled and i can not afford $300 - $400 dollar car bills to get this fixed every time it breaks down.. ron paul *tr

I have a 2001 ford taurus ses. about 5 months ago (~90 k miles) my front passenger side spring broke. the spring was replaced under recall. yesterday (~103 k miles), i found the rear driver side coil spring also cracked open and hanging very near to the tire. this car drives 98% on i-94 at a speed of 75mph. thank god the broken spring did not pop my tire open. dealer checked and found both the rear springs broken. a $385 estimate is given for just replacing the spring (not the struts). i checked on the internet and found this is a very common problem in taurus. ford should come forward and put a recall on the rear springs too. *tr

I was parking my car when i heard a loud bang come from the rear of the car. i didn't find anything wrong after looking under the car. later when i attempted to drive away i heard a scraping noise coming from the rear of the car. i thought it might be the brakes so i had it towed to a repair shop. after the mechanic inspected the vehicle, he told me both rear springs were broken and the scraping noise was the broken left rear spring rubbing on the tire. i was lucky that i wasn't driving otherwise the broken spring would have eventually cut the tire. *tr

Back springs broke and almost punctured a tire. we had to pay to have the springs replaced on the rear. if everyone was aware of the potential danger with the front springs why weren't the back springs also included in the safety recall? i think this is something someone should look into because this is also a safety issue. it is very unfair to have to pay for something that ford should have taken care of. my taurus has less than 75,000 miles on it and i'm wondering what other possible safety issues i have to look forward to. *tr

As i was backing out of my driveway, i heard a sound from my car's rear end. after i turned around and returned home i smelled burning rubber and noticed pieces of rubber inside the wheel. i removed the wheel and saw that the strut spring had broken and was rubbing the inside sidewall of the tire away. if this had occurred on the highway, it very well could have been fatal. luckily i was in the neighborhood or my daughter was not driving. this is an extremely severe safety hazard that occurs without warning and will produce an uncontrollable car. i contacted the local ford dealer and also called ford's customer service hotline but they will do nothing about this hazard or will they help in the repair. the front springs were under a recall but i didn't know this until one of these failed. ford replaced the front springs after this happened. from looking at this site, there seems to be a problem with this component. *tr

I was getting a routine oil change when the repair man said that both of my rear coil springs were broken on my '01 ford taurus. he mentioned that a broken rear coil spring can puncture tires and lead to accidents. he further explained that it would cost roughly $1400 to replace the coil springs and shocks and all the fittings etc.. i had never heard this severe of a problem with a vehicle that has less than 100k. i further did research on the issue to find thousands of complaints and the best that ford will say about it is, it has not caused any serious accidents. i cannot believe that we have to wait for someone to be seriously injured or worse before a company owns up to the problem and takes care of it. i will surely not buy another ford vehicle if this is the way they do business. *tr

Apr 2007 i have a 2001 ford taurus (1fafp53u21a111930) purchased used from pundmann ford feb. 2003. a few days ago i noticed a large piece of coil spring under the car. thinking that the spring was from the front and related to the shields that were installed under a previous recall i took the vehicle to the dealership and was told that both rear springs were broken. my trunk is never weighted down and i do not tow anything. did the rear springs come from the same vendor that supplied the defective front springs? as far as i know this is unheard of, even the service rep was surprised, and said that it should not have passed the required missouri safety inspection. i should hope that ford motor company will be willing to make an arrangement to have these springs replaced at no charge. sincerely, angela st.john 636/278-1565 angiesmail@centurytel.net dear angela, thank you for contacting the ford motor company customer relationship center regarding your 2001 ford taurus. we have reviewed your situation, and there are no warranties, recalls or customer satisfaction programs on your vehicle that would provide assistance for this repair. sincerely, shiela ford motor company follow up: 12jun07 had both defective rear springs replaced at pundmann ford, noticed new clunk from rear and took back to pundmann --- i was told that the broken rear springs probably caused excessive stress on the struts and they needed replaced, i don't suppose that ford is going to take responsibility for any of this, even though there are numerous complaints on the nhtsa's website --- is it only when defective components kill people that the manufacturers are forced to make things right?

My daughter came home last night and i went to check her car this morning and found a flat tire on the left rear. pumped it up and heard air leaking out, removed it and found the coil spring sticking out had cut the tire down and punctured it. i replaced the coil and strut as a unit from advance with a monroe which has a 5/8 coil spring, the original from ford was 1/2. ford had a recall , campaign # 04v3320000 for the coil springs on the front , why not the rear as well? its apparent they had a problem with the rear as you have 60 complaints before mine. does it take a death to make them fix the problem? our car only has 42,211 miles on it today when i replaced the strut and tire. we purchased the car from an individual, at the ford dealers lot, as it had been parked there after body work had been performed and been setting for over a year , it only had 18,000 miles on it 2 years ago. i have the old strut with broken spring, it has a small crack that shows some rust in the edge, and has a ductile fracture clean break with no rust in it. i'm a cat mechanic with some training in failure analysis, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this one out. *tr

Car was not handling well and there was a scraping noise coming from somewhere in the rear. car was taken to dealer to determine problem. dealer replaced broken right rear coil spring, seats & brackets, and a bent rear sway bar link (approximately $230 charged for the repair). about 2 weeks later (6-16-2006), the car was taken in again since it was still not handling well. the right rear strut and mount were replaced (approximately $264 charged for this repair). this problem seemed related to the repair performed on 6-1-2006. the possibility of a recall for this problem was investigated since the front coil spring recall had been done last december and it was found that the fractured rear coil spring had happened many time before although no recall had yet been made. *nm

I have a 2001 ford taurus with approx. 70,000 miles. this summer while making a turn out of a parking lot a heard a loud noise from under my car. now when ever i enter my driveway, make a turn after stopping or hit any kind of bump, it sounds as if something is hitting the bottom of my car. i also noticed that the left rear wheel has little clearance at the top of the sidewall from the wheel well. i looked under my car and found the rear stabilizer/ sway bar on the left side was broken .when i removed the rear left wheel i found my spring was broken. when i called my dealer they told me that this was not a covered item and i should call ford motors, which i did. when i called ford they told me that the front springs were covered because of corrosion but not the rear! i advised them that i was confused because if their springs had a tendency to break why would only the front spring be covered. i received no satisfaction from ford. while researching where i could purchase new springs that were not prone to failure like the ford springs. i found an article saying your office was investigating the failure of the rear springs. i was advised the to replace the spring would run approx. $350. pre spring plus parts. my car does not handle properly since this happened and i cant use it for any distance driving. is this something your office is investigating. *jb

I entered my car one morning and started backing out of the garage and i heard a metal grinding sound from the right rear side. while driving to work i noticed the car seemed to be riding lower on the right rear side. a week or so later i took the car into a ford dealership and was told the right rear spring and both struts needed to be replaced. he said the broken spring was gouging a hole in my tire. the right rear strut was leaking and needed to be replaced, but he said i would to have both replaced for the ride to be even. additionally, he said i would need to have an alignment done. i did not have the work performed on my car as the dealer was asking over $700 for the repairs. i called for other estimates. i pulled the tire off at home and did find the spring was broker and causing a gouge to be dug into my 1 year old tire just an inch below the top of the tire and about 1/4 inch deep. i have yet to speak to ford about the problem.*ak

Both rear coil springs fractured on my wife's 2001 ford taurus. luckily she was not driving the car at the time. the coils cut through the inner side walls of both brand new tires which were just installed on the car (january 04 2005). my wife was heading into work via the freeway and if it was not for the goodyear technician who heard a noise during the test drive, my wife could have potentially been involved in a very serious accident had the tires blown out at highway speed. i contacted ford of canada on numerous occasions for compensation but to no avail. at the time of the tire replacement, the vehicle had only 74,000 km. upon removal of the rear coil springs, it was clear that they had been broken for some time as the fracture points were well rusted over. this is a serious issue that could have resulted in death. ford does not seem to give a damn! *nm

On april 10, 2005 i was placing my daughter in her car seat (located in the middle of the back seat) when i heard a noise in the back drivers side of my car. upon looking at the vehicle i realized the back spring broke. knowing that the front springs are covered under a recall i assumed there was one also on the rear. i called roadside assistance and they towed the vehicle to prince frederick ford. when i spoke with the service department they assured me they would fix it and try to determine why it broke. also they said half of the labor would be to do a 4 wheel alignment. on april 14, 2005 i was told my car was ready. after paying for it they told me they don't know why it happened but it was fixed. upon leaving the parking lot i noticed the car was out of alignment and now there was a sound coming from the rear of the car (especially when hitting bumps). due to a family emergency i was unable to contact the dealer until monday the 18th. they told me to bring the car back and it would be checked out. on the 21st we were told the car was ready again. the alignment was not completed initially so they fixed that issue and then discovered the rear struts were bad and replaced them. at this time they also said they inspected the other spring and it looked fine. that brings us to today, may 13, 2005 when i again placed my daughter in her car seat (which we moved to the drivers side rear seat) the right (passenger) side spring broke. after calling ford to see why it broke when they said it was fine, they said they could be of no further help to us. i do have the spring that broke today (it's still on the car, until i can have it fixed) but the dealership didn't give me the first one. my concern is with there being a recall on the front springs due to corrosion by road salts in my state, what makes the rear any different? it is an odd occurance for one spring to break but for both to break i think there is a bigger problem.

I have a 2001 ford taurus purchased from dan buckey ford in chestnut ridge, ny (now diamond ford). a few years ago (2005 i think) we received notice about defective front coil springs. we took the car into the dealer and had shields installed that were supposed to protect from tire blowouts. they also said the front coil springs warranty would be extended to 150,000 miles. while the car was in the dealer, they told us that the left rear coil spring was broken. this was not covered under the recall or the warranty. we had to pay $600 to get it repaired. yesterday, the right rear coil spring broke. again, not covered under warranty. coil springs should rarely break on cars. if the front springs are defective, then it makes sense that the rear springs are too. this is an outrage and ford should be held accountable. *tr

My mother owns a 2001 ford taurus, and we recently discovered that the rear, driver-side, coil spring has broken. fortunately, this did not cause any additional damage, such as a flat tire from the spring puncturing the tire and potentially causing an accident. several certified mechanics has informed me that this is a common problem with these coil springs on these and similar vehicles. i have also confirmed that there already exists a recall on the front coil springs that also have a similar problem. my understanding is that the dealerships are installing a shield on the front coil springs to prevent the spring from damaging the tire when the coil spring breaks. at that point, when the spring breaks, the dealerships will then replace the front coil springs at no charge. in my opinion, i feel the rear coil springs should fall under this same recall. i have got to believe that the front and rear coil springs are very similar in engineering design. at this point, the dealership is more than willing to install the rear coil springs at $385.02. *tr

Rear coil spring is broken. we discovered the broken spring when it started making a hard rubbing noise against the tire. upon inspection, it appears by the rust and corrosion on the fractured end that it has been broken for some time. we travel out of town often as our daughters are both in college out of area. this would have been fatal if the tire would have shredded from the broken spring on the washington dc beltway. *tr

I am a owner of a 2001 ford taurus which i bought used and have owned it now for 2 years. it is the first ford i have owned in over 20 years. since i have owned it, it has not given me too many problems, just the basic break downs like, batteries, brakes ,seized a/c compressor, coolant expansion tank cracked, ect. those things are going to break. but what has really upset me is how i have read about the coil springs breaking on the taurus and causing possible damage to the vehicle. i didn't think it would happen to me but after arriving home today i noticed a small piece of metal under my 01 taurus and after further observation i found it to be a piece of my rear coil spring from the drivers side. i am a 40+ year old male who has had many makes and models of different types of vehicles and have never had or heard of coil springs breaking as they do on the ford taurus. this is a problem that needs to be repaired by ford and not the consumer. so i can only expect that the rest of the springs are faulty and need to be replaced before i have any further damage to my vehicle. it seems to me that the ford company does not care about craftmanship or the consumers safety. so change your slogan have you driven a ford lately to your riding on faulty coil springs. this is a serious problem that is a major safety issue and needs to be corrected free of charge to all ford taurus owners. *tr

Rear suspension coil broke on our 2001 ford taurus. it caused my wife to fishtail, due to puncture of tire by broken end of coil in wintertime. luckily for us there were no other cars on the road or an accident would have ensued, though my wife is currently suffering a migraine from the whiplash. i hold ford responsible for being aware of coil product problems, having recalled the front springs in 2005. i hold them responsible for not publicly asserting the problems with both front and rear suspension as complaints arose and specifically telling consumers that the rear suspension spring/coil was not and/or would not be recalled. i find this to be unacceptable, and believe that the piece should be recalled, and every consumer reimbursed for the expense of repair and replacement prior to the recall by ford motor co. it's for this very reason that so many american consumers are turning to foreign manufacturers. *tr

*tr

Hello, i have a 2001 ford taurus purchased used from pundmann ford feb. 2003. a few days ago i noticed a large piece of coil spring under the car. thinking that the spring was from the front and related to the shields that were installed under a previous recall i took the vehicle to the dealership and was told that both rear springs were broken. how can a vehicle that has not suffered harsh winters and is only 6 years old have broken springs? my trunk is never weighted down and i do not tow anything. did the rear springs come from the same vendor that supplied the defective front springs? as far as i know this is unheard of, even the service representative was surprised. the ford service representative also stated that the vehicle should not have passed the state safety inspection with these broken springs. i was told by ford customer care that they were not required to do anything at this time. 4/23/07 *tr

Driving at low speed, and heard a load pop from the driver rear side. i was directly in front of a firestone service center and immediately pulled in. under car inspection showed the rear coil had broke and cut through the inner side wall of the tire. technician said another 500 feet would have caused the tire to blow. if i had been at highway speed a serious accident would have occurred. the firestone manager states they see this problem often on taurus/sable models. i knew there was a recall on the front springs (i had the vehicle in for the recall to check/replace). i contacted my local dealer for details on what to do for rear spring re-call and was told they know of no problem with rear coils. i find this statement hard to believe, since the firestone repair center see cars every month with this problem. i had both springs replaced, struts (damaged), tire replaced, and vehicle aligned ($1300 total). i have defective spring in my garage. *tr

One winter morning i pulled my 2001 ford taurus out of my garage to do some errands. because i had some snow build-up on the back passenger side rear wheel, i figured the light grinding noise was from the buildup. when i pulled unto the street and reached higher speeds (about 45), the noise stopped leading me to believe that the snow had fallen off. after about 4 miles of driving, i reached the location i was going to. i got out of my car and noticed the back end sagging. i kept walking around my car to get my 22 month old son out when i realized i had a flat tire. after taking the tire off to replace it with the spare, i took a closer look at the tire. a grove had formed perfectly around the lower wall of the tire. i took the tire in to be replaced and asked that they check out the cause. after being reassured that it was okay but should be looked at more closely, i drove 2 miles home. once at home the tire was removed again only to again see the deep grove in a brand new tire. closer inspection of the car resulted in finding a broken coil spring the had been rubbing on the tire and had cause rapid air deflation after no more than 4 miles of driving. needless to say, the tire, the coil springs, and the rear struts had to be replaced at the tune of nearly $700. i was thankful that i had forgot to take out all the warm winter clothes out of my car that we had used the night before to go sledding; i was able to keep my son warm on a cold and fridged day where i was trapped with a flat. *jb

I had my 2001 ford taurus in for a flat tire repair due to a nail puncture when the mechanic found that both rear coil springs were sheared off and sticking out less than 1 inch from the rear tires. they had been broken for some time which was apparent due to the rusted ends of the spring. this also explains why the car has had a poor ride quality and has been making noise going over bumps. the mechanic had to replace both springs and the rear struts which cost almost $600. by the way my car has only 53k miles. i kept the coil springs as proof of the problem. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated that the vehicle's rear coil spring on the driver side fractured while traveling 35 mph on 04/07/06. there was a noise heard coming from the rear suspension prior to the incident. the vehicle was immediately pulled over and inspected by the contact. there were no problems observed, so the vehicle was driven 1 mile when the rear driver side tire blew out. the contact pulled over in a parking lot and attempted to change the tire but found that the incorrect spare was put in the vehicle by an auto shop. the vehicle was driven slowly across the street to the dealer. the dealer determined that the driver side rear coil spring fractured and the dealer replaced the spring and tire. on 06/24/06, a noise was heard while traveling 25mph. when the vehicle was inspected, no problem were observed. the vehicle was driven home and the tire was taken off to inspect the spring and the rear passenger side coil spring was fractured. a new coil spring was purchased from the dealer, and the contact's spouse replaced the broken spring. both incidents occurred during normal driving. the contact has the failed part and repair invoice available. the contact noticed that there was a recall for the front springs of the same model. the vin# was not included in the recall.

Both 2 rear coil springs are fractured and just found yesterday (07/10/2006). they must have broken long time ago because the noise was first heard around last fall. since then the car was switched for local driving only. at that time i thought it was the brake making noise. rear tires were removed yesterday (07/10/2006) to check the brake. brake is fine, but found the 2 rear coil springs were broken. my car has about 130k miles now. *nm

I own a 2001 ford taurus se. i took my vehicle in for nys inspection and found that 2 of my coils were broken, one rear and one front coil. my car has only 27,300 miles on it. this is a ridiculous problem to have with so few miles on my car. i took my car to the dealer and they replaced only one front coil and i had to pay to have the rear coil fixed. i have since learned that they are required to fix both front coils, even if only one breaks, which they did not do. however, why are the rear coils not covered in the recall??? they are also subject to salt. the rear coils are just as faulty as the front coils. *jb

Rear driver side coil spring broke while driving on highway going at 65 mph. heard a loud bang in rear and proceeded to drive about 1 mile to my house. smelled burning rubber coming from the rear tire. proceeded to take the tire off the car and found that the coil spring had fractured and the inner side of the tire had a deep gouge from the sharp broken coil spring. i was lucky that i was close to home when it occurred and didn't have to travel too many miles. in either case it would have resulted in a blown tire which is very terrifying. estimate repair will be both rear coil springs, two new rear tires. *nm

Brought my 2001 ford taurus se to ford dealership for routine maintenance (oil change) and mentioned that the car felt 'skittish' under braking as if the rear of the vehicle was loose. the service manager informed me that upon inspecting the vehicle the brakes were fine but the rear springs were rusted and one was cracked and the other was completely broken in half. the fracture marks were at the same spot on both springs. the vehicle has only 14,000 miles on it and i do not consider this 'routine maintenance'. i am the only one who drives this vehicle, i never tow, the trunk is always empty and no one ever sits in the back seat. it is extremely rare for one spring to fail let alone two at the same time. the fact that both springs failed in the same location states that there is a serious and potentially lethal design flaw. ford refused to pay for the springs to be replaced as they felt it was normal wear and tear and that the part was not under a recall. why does ford want to wait for someone to be seriously injured or killed before they will acknowledge that their springs are defective? *nm

Strange sound from front right tire in terms of loud squeaking when going over bumps and rolling road. took car to dealer. it was found to have a broken tie rod at the front right end. however they also found the right rear coil spring was broken. the broken spring had cut a deep groove into the inner sidewall of the tire. i had the broken spring and tie rod replaced by the dealer under the terms of my extended warranty but they were not obligated to pay for the tire. i paid for a new tire. on the way home a loud hammering sound now came from the right rear tire area when riding over bumps. took car back to dealer and he found that the right rear strut was ruined due to the broken coil spring and replaced it. the dealer said the left rear spring was good and did not need to be replaced. my main concern is not that i was not covered for cost of the replacement tire but rather that this broken spring be allowed, by design to ruin a tire that can result in an accident. a new spring can still break and puncture the tire. i now have to spend my own money as soon as my warranty runs out (in a few weeks) to replace the coil spring on the left rear side. if these things were not designed right or made right, we should at least be told to change them after a certain number of miles rather than wait for a failure to occur and risk a tire blowout. *jb

My 2001 ford taurus broke a rear strut spring and it cut a groove in the drivers side rear tire. this caused a blow-out and my wife was driving on a side street and no accident occurred. we have a grandson who rides in a permanent car seat in the rear and fortunately he was not with her at the time. there was a recall last year for the front coil-over strut spring and we had the shields put on by a local ford dealer. why is it that the rear coil-over strut springs were not shielded or replaced. they are almost identical to the front springs and can cause just as severe an accident if cut down, as a tire in the front if you are at highway speed. we were fortunate enough to have this happen at a low speed. this is definitely a manufacture defect since the taurus is a 2001 with only 47,000 miles on it. car is usually only driven to and from work a distance of less than 3 miles. other taurus owners should be aware of this. when i checked the local parts house where i purchase my car parts [taurus is well maintained] they have a back order for these coil-over struts w/springs of 22. so something is definitely wrong here. *nm

1- left rear (driver side) coil spring broke. vehicle was under no load except for the driver in the car, trunk and rear seat were empty. 2- the rear coil spring just broke and damaged the inner sidewall of the corresponding tire. the tire did not deflate. 3- both rear coils were replaced ($ 457.34) and the tire was replaced as well ($ 76.99). the failed rear coil is not available as, at that time, i was not aware that there was a preliminary investigation by the nhtsa into coil spring failures in 2001 ford taurus vehicles. *nm

On december 15th, i pulled out of my driveway at about 5 mph and heard a clunking noise from the rear of the car. i got out and checked the rear tires and found that they were still inflated. i pulled out to leave my driveway and heard a loud screeching noise as i drove away. i drove back into my driveway and found that the left rear tire was flat. i replaced the tire with the doughnut and was able to drive the car. assuming that the problem was a punctured tire, i took the tire to a local place for a tire repair. they reported that the tread had separated from the tire, but didn't know why. they replaced the tire and as my wife drove away, she heard the screeching noise and after investigation, the shop found that the rear spring had fallen down and gouged the tire, causing the tread separation. the car has been taken to the dealer for replacement of the rear springs, at my cost. what i don't understand is why ford is taking care of the front spring issue but isn't taking care of the rear spring issue when the cause of the rear spring issues is fully known and understood. ford needs to recall and replace the rear springs before people are killed due to their obvious negligence. *jb

I own a 2001 ford taurus ses with 55000 miles on it. in april, 2005 the front coil spring recall was done on this car. today, the right rear coil spring broke at about 30 mph, cut the inside of the tire and punctured it. ford dealer states that they can't do anything for me as there is no recall on that part. they were very happy to take $600 to fix the spring and shock as well as do the same on the left side, since that would probably break tomorrow. plus, even though ford clearly has under-specified these springs, i even get to pay for a new tire! last ford product i buy. *nm

Left rear tire went flat. purchased two new tires and asked the mech. what could cause the grove on inside tire wall. he said to check for piece of metal stuck. when i returned home, all i could find was a semi loose mud flap. then i looked up and noticed the spring was not sitting on the metal plate of strut. it was the exact spot that the grove was cut into the tire. called ford dealer and asked about it. they notified me of the recall on the front struts but said none had been issued for the rear. (they look the same!!). oct 18, i paid to have new springs put on the rear of car. returned car today 19th, as now it is making loud thumping noise from rear on every bump in the road. their mechanic took test drive with me and confirmed. they are working on it now. is this how they are funding the recall on the front ones?? can you tell i am disgusted with ford motor company?

In may of 2005 the rear coil springs of my 2001 ford taurus both broke and the left coil spring punctured my tire causing a rapid loss of air. the coil springs on the front of my vehicle broke in june of 2004 (and now have protective shields due to the recall in august of 2004). all four coil springs on my vehicle have been replaced. my vehicle is now registered in virginia but had over 75000 miles put on it in pennsylvania- i believe that if my vehicle had not been registered in pennsylvania at the time of the front spring recall i would not have known about the recall. the ford dealership in my area was reluctant to place the recall protective shields on the front of my taurus. *nm

I see from an associated press article dated today that the ford taurus is being investigated by the nhtsa due to rear coil spring failures. i own a 2001 taurus on which i recently paid several hundred dollars to have the passenger-side rear coil spring replaced, due to failure (or imminent failure). while i was having some other non-related service work done, the ford dealer noticed during their inspection that the spring was at or near the point of failing. they told me it required replacement, or else it could result in a tire puncture- so of course i had the repair completed. at the place i am typing this, i don't have the bill for the work done with me- so the incident date i'm entering below is approximate. i do have the bill for the work which will show the correct date. please keep me updated on the outcome of your investigation. thank you.*jb

Broken rr coil spring was discovered by belle tire technician while repairing a tire leak on my daughter's 2001 taurus. vehicle was deadlined and delivered to blackwell ford to have the first spring recall performed and the rear springs inspected/repaired using authorized ford service parts. rr spring and rr shock were both replaced due to usual damage to the shock caused by the broken spring (old parts are in my possession and available for inspection). blackwell service advisor informed me that ford would not cover the cost of the rr spring/shock repair since there was no recall/service action in place regardless of the failure mode being identical to the front springs which were produced at the same time. the vehicle has 64,000 miles on the odo (ie out of warranty), but the amount of rust at the fracture point indicates the spring had been broken for some time. there were no noise or vehicular attitude concerns to indicate a broken rear spring. both the belle tire and blackwell personnel seemed very familiar with this failure mode on the taurus. the cost of the repair was $375.52. *nm

I have a 2001 ford taurus with 110,000 miles. the rear drivers side spring coil failed, came dislodged from the seat and was rubbing on the inside wall of the rear tire. this could have ultimately resulted in puncture and rapid air loss in the tire potentially causing loss of control of the vehicle. the problem was discovered because the rear tire was losing air and was brought in for repair. when the tire was removed there was a groove all the way around the tire approximately 1/8 deep and the spring coil was protruding. prior to discovery, there was no indication of this problem. the car drove normally and was not noticeably lower or riding low. although this problem for me did not result in accident or loss of control, it was very possible and i'm very concerned about the safety implications for other car owners. additionally, when i contacted ford about this problem, they offered no help in the repair of the vehicle, even in spite of a very similar recall for the front spring coils. (recall # 04v332000) in this recall, they acknowledge the exact potential failure of the front coils. the dealer that services my vehicle has seen my car every 3,000 miles and did not identify this issue proactively. *jb

Car was being driven slowly when a pop was heard in the right rear corner of the car as it was being parked. when backing out of the parking spot a rubbing noise was heard. had the car towed to a ford garage and was found to have a broken rear coil spring rubbing on the tire. fortunately it didn't break 10 minutes later on the interstate. the ford garage is repairing the one spring for $500 and will also have to replace both rear tires. with only 60k miles and 3 1/2 years of age this is far too early to experience a failure of this magnitude. is it going to take someone getting killed in an accident before a recall is finally ordered??? there is still a suspect spring on the left rear that could fail at any moment. my children ride in this car on the interstate frequently, i don't feel safe having them riding in this vehicle in it's current condition. please issue a recall immediately to protect the thousands of families who are riding in these potential death traps.

2001 taurus backing out of driveway heard noise in left rear and smelled odor of burnt rubber. pulled back in driveway and found left rear spring fractured and deeply scored inside of tire. put on doughnut called ford which had recalled car in 3/05 for spring shields and was told this was a covered repair for both springs and tire. left car at dealer but later informed by dealer and then ford customer service that warranty fix only available for front coil springs. all springs installed at same time as car was built, ford is aware of spring fractures to point of installing shields on the front. in my opinion all springs should be covered, had this happened at speed there would have been a catastropic tire failure in left rear. been driving 45 years and never even heard of a spring failure, this will get worse as cars age.

There was no meaningful event or evidence (noise, etc.)preceeding the discovery of the failure of both rear coil springs. i visually saw them after being removed and they had corroded and snapped completely through. they were found after requesting an inspection prior to the warranty expired. the ford dealer said it was a common problem, but not covered by warranty. i carry no weight in the back of my car except 3 times weekly i have my grandchildren ages 2 and 3 1/2 years!! repair requires the replacement of struts as well. after getting a second opinion where the second coil spring was identified, i had the repair completed at a non-ford repair facility.

I first noticed a grinding noise coming from the rear of my 2001 ford taurus. looking under the rear of the car i noticed a gouge around the entire sidewall of the tire. after removing the left rear tire i found the rear coil spring was broken and was gouging the tire.i called the service department at whitmoyer ford in mt. joy, pa. to ask if there was a safety recall on the rear springs of this vehicle. he said there was not. i then called customer service at ford in michigan and reported the problem and requested if this dangerous defect could be repaired at no cost to me as the vehicle had only been driven 16,227 miles. i was told i would have to drive the car to the dealership about 15 to 20 miles to have the problem evaluated before a decision could be made if any of the cost would be paid by ford. i was suprised by the lack of concern by ford customer service to an obvious safety defect.
