I was driving my 2001 ford taurus onto a freeway and got up to 45 mph and the car continued to accelerate after i lifted my foot off the gas. i attempted to press on the brake as hard as i could and the car was still accelerating. pressing the brake would not make the car stop. i was not using cruise control. i pulled off to the side of the freeway and put the car in park, the car was still revving up, so i turned the car off. i waited a couple of minutes and started the car again and continued driving and the car exhibited the same conditions as before. i was able to exit the freeway and was about to get to an intersection that had a stop sign. i realized that even after pressing down on the brakes as hard as i could, the car was not going to stop so i proceeded to pull over to the side again and quickly put the car in park and turn the car off. i left the car there and walked to the nearest gas station and towed the car home. i did not feel safe driving anymore and it is a miracle that i did not cause an accident. *tr

I had just punched the gas pedal and then went to hit the brakes a few seconds later, but the car wasn't really slowing. looked down and noticed the rpms were at 4000 so i moved the transmission to neutral and the car started slowing more. the car kept revving at 4k rpms though so i turned off the engine. i hadn't come to a complete stop yet so the last few feet were harder to stop, but luckily there wasn't any traffic in front of me and i wasn't in any danger of hitting anyone/anything. i tried starting the car up again and it went right up to 4000k rpms, i shut it off and then tried to hit the gas pedal thinking that maybe it was stuck or there was something under it or something, but that wasn't it so i shut the car off again. then i popped the hood and noticed that one of the cables that went to the throttle had slid out of a grey boot and was jammed against the side of that boot holding the throttle open. i moved it back so that it popped into the center. started it up again and it was fine. closer examination later showed that the grey connector that holds the cable in the center had little bits broken off. if those bits there there, it would prevent the cable from sliding out. as this was on a weekend, as a temporary fix, i used a zip tie and some duct tape to hold it in before i got a new cruise control cable. this was the first time this had happened to me.

I was merging onto the freeway and i accelerated up to the speed of traffic which was 65 mph. i let up off of the gas pedal and the car kept accelerating. it felt like the curse control was on but the cruise control was not on or set. even when pressing on the brakes the car was not decelerating and the car kept going faster and faster to over 80mph. i kept tapping the brakes and even tried tapping the gas pedal. nothing under the pedals was stuck but the engine was accelerating like i was flooring the gas pedal. then after about a few miles i was able to regain control of my car by pressing on the brakes really hard.

This vehicle has a long history of speeding up on its own. i took it to the ford dealership when it began in late 2007, but they could not find the problem. i also have record of its history involving this issue with my personal mechanic. no mechanic has ever found a solution to this problem, and i continue to drive this car. i recorded circumstances surrounding each incident, down to the temperature outside and weather conditions to find a common cause. each case was unique and no cause was found. often, i would recognize the issue when trying to stop for a red light or stop sign and found myself fighting the car to stop. the brakes continued to work during these episodes, however i could not come to a complete stop unless i put the car into neutral. during one instance, the car reached 70 mph before there was a popping noise, and it slowed. most commonly, the car would speed up to about 45 mph before i put it into neutral and turned it off, oftentimes in front of intersections. the cruise control has been disabled, the throttle body cleaned, and electrical system checked. none of these were determined to be the cause.

I have read the news this week about the preliminary investigation into 2005-06 taurus speed control problems and it is exactly the same as a very scary problem i experienced last year with my 2001 taurus. a ford dealer replaced a cable for the speed control on the car's cruise control system. i still have a copy of my ford invoice and i kept the broken cable that was replaced on my car. i was driving my car down a boulevard when the engine began to race even though i was not accelerating. i had to press hard on my brakes to stop for a red light, and put the car in neutral, but the engine continue to race at about 4,000 rpms. i turned the engine off, then turned it on again, hoping i could move out of the lanes of traffic. however, the engine continue to speed so i turned the engine off again and sat in my car until a good samaritan pushed me out of traffic. aaa towed the car to worthington ford in long beach, ca. both the good samaritan and the aaa tow truck driver turned the engine on with the hood open and said the throttle was stuck. the aaa driver showed me a cable with a fitting that was loose, and when he pushed the fitting in, the engine slowed down. the ford dealer said the problem was not the throttle but the cruise control system. they offered to disable the cruise control, but i had them fix it. the ford invoice states: customer states vehicle has a sticking throttle/cable. something broken causing rpms to go over 4k and adv. removed cyclinder and added new speed control cable. the new part is listed as yf1z-0a825-ca, with description actuato 540397. the cost was $307.82.

The gas peddle on my 2001 taurus has been sticking for about the past three years. i have taken it to auto repair shops and alway ask for it to be looked at when other repairs are needed. however, no one seems to know what to do about the sticking. i am afraid that it will stay in a stuck position while driving so i am extremely cautious. lately it seems to have gotten worse especially in the colder weather. i realize the car is over 10 years old, but this is a real hazard.

I have been a licensed drive for 37 years. after merging my 2001 ford taurus onto an interstate highway, the vehicle continued to accelerate after i removed my foot from the gas pedal. i tapped the brakes to see if cruise control was on. it wasn't. i glanced at the gas pedal to see is something was on it. there wasn't. i tapped the gas pedal to see if it was stuck. it stayed depressed. i braked hard and the vehicle slowed to 60mph. i released the brake pedal and the car began accelerating again. to keep from rear-ending the car ahead of me, i downshifted and stood on the brake pedal. i pulled onto the road shoulder, shifted the transmission to neutral and was able to stop the car with brakes smoking. the engine continued to race. i turned off the car and had it towed to a ford dealer. the service representative told me the plastic bracket that holds the throttle cable in place had broken and the cable had jammed in with the throttle open. the service department replaced the throttle cable assembly(yfiz*9a825*ca actuator asy). they kept the old part. i feel i was fortunate not to have caused an accident and been injured or killed. my teenagers also drive the vehicle and might not have been able to successfully stop the car as i did.

Car engine would not stop after applying brakes, car engine kept trying to go forward while i was pressing hard on the brakes at a stop light. car engine would not stop, it would stop go, stop go, stop go, stop go while i was pressing hard on the car brakes had to change car lanes to avoid hitting the car in front of me almost ended up in the middle of the intersection. had some close calls. this has happen before with this car, but not as bad. the engine light went on this time (never had a engine light before). i took the car to a car repair shop (meineke car care) and they ran their engine diagnostic tests and got a (error code p0171 and p0174) system too lean bank 1 and 2. there was air leaks in the air hose assy, replaced air tube assy, parts (yf1z6758a and f6dz6758a), after that the car ran fine (for one day). i had a problem also with the car engine idle (rough idle), car engine would stop running at a stop light. (the car engine light went back on again). i took the car to a car repair shop (pepboys) and they ran car engine diagnostic ce scan and got (error code p0174 system too lean b1 and b2). they replaced pcv hose (elbow hose) that was leaking, (part yf1z6a664ab pcv hose, lf 0019.5800 po 10332245.). after that the car engine is running good (so far). this may help in locating some of the problems with car engines trying to go forward while the drivers are applying the brakes. need better air hoses that will not leak.

At a stop light, no crash, but almost. i was applying the brakes hard and the car engine did not want to stop. the engine kept trying to go forward, but my hard braking kept it from going forward. i had to change car lanes to prevent a crash. i had to keep my foot on the brake pressing hard. the car engine finally stop trying move forward.. this has happen before with this car several times with some close calls. this happens on and off for the past 2 years. my brakes are in good sharp. maybe a sensor problem ??? *tr

Ford taurus 2001 cruise control poorly designed cruise cable caused the car to continue running at high speed. cruise control was not engaged at the time of the problem showing up. i turned engine off. it could have been bad if some one else was driving. i have investigated the problem and can easily reproduce it. when depressing the accelerator pedal both the throttle cable and the cruise cable are moving together. but when the plastics on the end of the cruise cable gets old the two parts separate and the cable sleeve is getting stuck on the outside of the holding piece. the accelerator cable then cannot go bake into idle position. if the explanation is not clear i can add photos of the problem. arie kryzewski *tr

I own a 2001 ford taurus sel with 156k miles. i lose control of my vehicle during rush hour commute home. the car accelerated violently on its own as if the throttle was stuck. i nearly slammed into the car in front of me. the acceleration over powered the brakes. i shifted the car into neutral and the engine revved to the point i thought it would blow. i turned the car off and had to be pushed out of a dangerous/busy location. what scares me the most is that i shared this vehicle with a 16 year old daughter. *tr

I was driving my 2001 ford taurus and when i accelerated after pulling onto the highway from a parking lot, the car reached a speed somewhere between 50-60 mph and held that speed. the car is equipped with a cruise control, which i rarely use. i was not using it at the time. i applied the brakes, but the car held steady at the same speed. i drove approximately six miles in moderate traffic, damaging the brakes in the process, until i found an area where i could safely drive off the road without risk to myself or others. eventually, the car slowed to the point at which i could angle into a slight embankment and stop. i had the car towed to the ford dealership. they repaired the damage done to the brakes but kept the car for a week and still had some difficulty in identifying what caused the acceleration problem. they finally said that it had to do with the cruise control and disconnected it. the manager of the service department there commented that this was not a problem he

While depressing the brake pedal, the vehicle accelerated with high engine rev. it was necessary to turn off the ignition to eliminate the hazardous condition. ford needs to address this recurring issue as reported by other owners. previously, on 9/10/03, this vehicle was brought to the dealership for the same problem and supposedly repaired. this issue is not the result of depressing the brake and accelerator pedal simultaneously. the vehicle has been the subject of a recall concerning the lateral distance between the brake and accelerator pedals. this latter issue was addressed and resolved by the dealership. the accelerating issue is definitely an equipment failure. nhtsa needs to address this safety hazard now! *nm

On november 6,2005 my 93 year old aunt (theresa fisher) was injured in a car crash involving unintended sudden acceleration. i am filing this complaint on her behalf since i hold durable power of attorney, and she is unable to file this herself. the vehicle was a 2001 ford taurus owned and operated by my 79 year old cousin, rose natale (her first accident in 52 years of driving). she was exiting a parking lot in brick nj at 5 to 10 mph when the taurus took off like a rocket on its own. she was unable to stop the vehicle - hit a tree head on - airbags deployed - both occupants (wearing seat belts) were injured. police and ambulance arrived on scene - driver and passenger transported to hospital - police report on file in brick, new jersey. vehicle was originally and purchased and routinely serviced by the same ford dealer in nj. vehicle owner - rose natale - has vehicle details and dealer information. rose's address and phone is: 369b portsmouth drive - lakewood, nj 08701 (732) 905-2127. *nm

On three occasions, although i didn't realize it at the time, while braking to stop, i was also accelerating causing the car to lurch forward. the harder a pressed on the brake the greater the accelleration. as i said, i had no idea my right foot was on both pedals at the same time. i had the car towed back to clarke ford for their inspection. they performed that inspection on 8/21 and reported no apparent problems. i returned to the dealership that evening to pick up the vehicle. the salesman and i took a test drive to see if i could replicate what i had experieced on the 19th. couldn't do it so i drove my other vehicle home and the salesman followed me home in the new vehicle. the salesman drove me back to the dealership and as he proceded into a parking space he braked to stop the car but at the same time the car wanted to accelerate just as had happened to me on three occassions. the startled salesman exclaimed is that what happened to you and he looked down at his which was on both the brake and the accelerator. mystery solved. this had never happened with any other vehicle i have owned or leased in 43 years of driving. i inspected the position of the brake and accelerator pedals in my other two cars and a couple of co-workers cars and discovered that the distances, both depth and width, on the new taurus were much closer than the other vehicles. on the new taurus, i can depress the brake with my hand and it will desend to a level lower than the accelerator. i could not do this in the other vehicles, even by using my foot to brake. the brake pedal never got to the level of the accelerator. i believe the ford new design, which is a power adjustable brake and accelerator pedal bar to accomodate short statured people, could be a defect which could cause serious accidents, similar to those that occured in the jeep a number of years ago.

Engine races to 3500-4500 rpm with foot off of accelerator and usually while on brake, hot or cold, in or out of gear, while driving, stopped, or parked. has nothing to do with pedal spacing, has occurred often enough to verify that foot was either completely off accelerator or completely on brakes. occurs randomly and without warning, usually around 40 mph in city style driving. has been serviced three (3) times, has not been duplicated by ford service techs, nor has the problem been resolved. happens both with the speed control cable attached or detached from the throttle body. pedal is not jamming on floor mat or any other footwell obstructions. has occurred while stopped at a stoplight, required extreme braking effort to keep vehicle stationary, resolved when accelerator depressed on green light. has also occurred driving into neighborhood, rode brakes until i got to my driveway where heavy braking was applied and car put in park and ignition quickly turned off. during drive thru neighborhood while engine racing was occuring, numerous attempts were made to resolve problem by putting vehicle in nuetral, but had no effect. vehicle was reentered after sitting in driveway for approx 30-60 minutes. brake pedal depressed, ignition turned on, foot remained on brake to put vehicle in reverse, immediatley upon putting vehicle in reverse throttle raced and threw vehicle 1.5-2 car lengths backwards before contorl was resumed by firmly applying brakes. during this incident, foot was never removed from brake pedal. car quickly shut off, and scenario was repeated by father, car brought under control agian, and problem resolved by applying accelarator while in neutral. other incidents have occured while removing foot from accelarator and coasting. obviously it is not always safe to resolve problem by accelerating, and is an incredibly dangerous problem.
