First time at 65 mph vehicle started to accelerate by itself, second time when driving at 30 mph the speed started to increase by itself and after stopping the rpm stayed at 2500. took vehicle to ford dealer where they recommended that a decarb of the fuel injectors, throttle body be done and also suggested that the idle air control valve had a erratic condition. they also said that they performed multiple test drives with an i.d.s. tester and found nothing wrong. after paying over $700.00 we drove back home, within one mile the car started to accelerate again, almost had an accident at a 4 way stop and had to press the breaks hard but the car did not come to a complete stop and went thru the intersection.

Starting january 7, 2013 i noticed my gas pedal was stuck and the car suddenly starting to accelerate. i pushed in the gas pedal to unstick it. later that day this same issue occured again. i took my car to the ford quick lane for them to figure out why my car suddenly started to accelerate without my control. they could not find anything wrong with my car or why this issue was happening. throughout the week this issue continued and on friday january 11, 2013 i dropped my car off for 2 days at the quick lane again. they could not get the car to suddenly accelerate. when i picked up my car on saturday i was told that the cruise control cable was broken, but that cable shouldn't have any affect on the sudden acceleration of the car. so as of right now tuesday january 15,2013 my car is still accelerating on its own and i have to put the car in neutral just to get the engine to quit accelerating.

Hello, i have recently purchased a used 2005 ford taurus. the problem is that the car accelerates without me touching the gas pedal, this is a very dangerous problem especially with snow and ice on the ground. i noticed it happens when i take my foot of the brake at stop signs, the car will start to accelerate very suddenly reaching speeds up to 40mph untill i step on the brake.

When aoperating about 35 miles per hour the car will suddenly accelerate on its own. the rpm will go to 3+. to interrupt i tap the gas pedal a couple of times and step on the brake. it does not happen all of the time. i thought i had done something the first time, but then it has happened several times since. it is at the car dealership to be worked on tomorrow.

I was driving about 40mph when my car started accelerating. i pulled over, got the car towed and fixed that day. about a month later, it happened again on a busier street. being familiar with the feeling, i rode it out to my home except towards the end it would not stop. the friction on the tires made it smell like fire also and they were smoking. i got it towed again except when the driver got there, the car was fine and nothing seemed wrong at the mechanic's. this has happened at least 3 more times in the past year, each time exactly the same.

Driving around 35mph vehicle started to accelerate on its own. hit brake but rpm's still climbed. hit brake again and fixed issue. also cruise control stopped working around the same time. has happened 3 times since first incident. have to smash accelerator repeatedly to fix issue. very scary feeling and will not let wife drive kids around in this vehicle. after reading the 100's of compaints on internet describing this exact same issue cannot believe ford has not issued a recall on this problem yet. this is literally an accident waiting to happen. have owned car since 2007 and this is the first major issue we have had with this vehicle.

During moderate speed travel, let off of accellerator and expected vehicle to begin slowing down. however, it responded by slowly accelerating. then, while trying to stop at an intersection, lurching of the vehicle began when applying the brake. could not make this activity stop without rapidly stepping on the accellerator and releasing. once it stopped, the vehicle seemed ok until the next day when it began again. there did not appear to be any relation to warm up time, etc. took vehicle to ford service center and they could find no problem. i then researched this issue on the interenet and found similar complaints that were resolved by fixing the cruise control (this had not occurred to me since the cruise control was not engaged during problem). i then asked the service center to check cruise control circuitry (they said they had with no problems found). i picked up the vehicle, took is immediately to the freeway and engaged the cruise control, and it would not hold speed. i took the vehicle back, the service technician looked under the hood and found the cruise control cable disconnected. he manipulated the throttle and was able to see the cable connect and disconnect randomly; he also stated he could see how the cable would be in the way of normal throttle operation if it was disconnected. the cable has been replaced and the acceleration issue has not reoccurred.

Car accelerated on its own, applied the brake it would slow down but start accelerating again without touching the gas pedal..got stopped and pressed gas pedal down and the engine finally stopped racing. this is the 3rd time this has happened in the past 4 weeks.

I was traveling at approximately 35 mph when car began accelerating and continue to accelerate and reached speed of approximately 50mph. i managed by applying brakes continuously to slow down and pull in parking lot. i put engine in neutral and engine continued at high rpm. i turned car off and started it back up several times before i tried pressing gas pedal to floor several times. car then idled at normal idle speed. it seemed to be ok at this point but when i began driving again this happened several more times. if i put car in neutral and floored gas pedal it returned to normal rmp. i have had this reoccur 6 or 7 times since then and putting in neutral, flooring gas petal resolves problem. i do not use cruise control often but when i tried to use it this summer it no longer works.

While driving the vehicle started to accelerate on its own. when put into park the rpm's went up to 5,000 in less than 3 seconds. turned the car off, then back on and the rpm's went up to 3,000 in just a few seconds. had the car toed to the dealer. they said they fixed the problem but it happened again a little over a week after the first incontinent. the second time when put into park the rpm's went up to 4,000.

My 2005 ford taurus accelerated abrubtly at an intersection at 4000 rpm. if a car had been in front of me it would have hit them. the car was able to get through the intersection and into a parking lot. the car was towed and as the tow truck driver started the car it revved up again and he was able to stop it in time. it is currently at my mechanic in pompano beach florida.

I was turning left into the side road leading to my home when the vehicle suddenly accelerated. i applied the brakes (to no avail) and then shifted into neutral. engine rpm exceeded 3000. after tapping the accelerator pedal several times the engine returned to idle speed. i continued and turned left into my driveway and the same situation occured. it has not happened again although my cruise control no longer works.i can turn it on and when i press set accel the cruise light on the dash comes on but the cruise control won't engage.

Absolutely frightening! this afternoon a passenger and i pulled out onto the main thoroughfare when my car (2005 taurus) independently accelerated and began running/spinning at a high rpm. the experience was not unlike a self propelled vacuum where you let go and it wants to run off by itself - only this is far more dangerous having been in traffic with precious lives at stake. it was not wanting me to brake either. thankfully i was able to pull off into a gravel lot. i turned the car off for a few minutes then started it again only that time it was running at rocket speed. needless to say it was unsafe to drive at that point so i had it towed to the local ford dealer. they just called to say it was the speed control cable that appeared to disengage and do something with the throttle. clearly this is a problem with the make and model of car based on the cumulative posts i am seeing. ford needs to step up or the ntsb needs to step in.

On 5/24/2012, i was driving in my neighborhood at about 45 mph when all of a sudden the rpms spiked to about 4000 and the car would not slow down from 45 mph even with my foot off the accelerator. i was able to turn down a side street and stop. my brakes did work. i had the car towed to my dealer. the dealer replaced the throttle body and speed control cable and said they had worn causing cable to come loose and jam throttle body.

I was about to leave the parking lot of my job. i put the car in drive with my foot on the brake pedal. as i took my foot off the brake pedal, before i could even place it on the accelerator pedal, the car lunged forward on its own. i had to quickly put my foot back on the brake pedal to stop it! thankfully there was no one parked in front of me, or i would surely have run into them. after reading several complaints about the 2005 taurus accelerating or lunging forward on its own, i felt the need to add my complaint to the database.

The first incident my brother was alone and driving the car. he accelerated after stopping for a traffic signal. within about 50 yards the car continued to accelerate up to 4000 rpm. he pulled off to a turning lane and had to hold his foot on the brake to avoid hitting another vehicle. finally he put the car in park. the engine did not slow down until he put the car back in drive. since then the accelerator has taken control three different times at about 40 mph. most recent incident was on 4/18/2012, mileage 36140. we were riding home from church. my brother pressed the accelerator to about 45 mph from a stop sign intersection and the engine revved up to 4000 rpm again. we had to pull off the road, turn the engine off and on 3 times before it was driveable.

My 2005 ford taurus will accelerate itself when driving at slow speeds. hitting the gas pedal has alleviated the problem. when the brakes are applied, the car will stop, but the engine still revs up. other issues i have noticed is that the cruise control will go out, then it will begin working again. at higher speeds, the steering wheel vibrates even though i have had my alignment checked, new tires, new belts, injectors cleaned, and my tires rotated. the ford dealership had never heard of the acceleration problem, and even though they tried to fix it in december 2011, it still occurs. in february 2012, my alternator went out, so after installing a new alternator and battery, my cruise control once again no longer worked and my car starting accelerating itself up the hill. eventually, my cruise control began working again, but i am very worried about the time i may not be able to stop my car from accelerating. i take my two year old nephew to daycare every day, and i am worried about both of our lives on a daily basis.

I bought car from maple street auto - picked up car on 02/24/2012 i notice when i start car - the rpm goes up to high rpm compare to other cars i owned - like dodge caravan and ford windstar when i put car into d - 97 percent of the time takes of and excessive brakes applied while driving most time - i notice the car changes out and takes off appreciable even on a flat surface when coming to a stop light - the car wants to keep going and brakes has to be applied hard even when slowing down once again - i am applying brakes a lot as car keeps going. for the record, i have no speeding violation, no accidents and i have to be careful when driving as the car tend to speed up at times. i also was warned not to use the cruise control by the seller (maple street auto)

I have been having problems in which the accelerator sticks while driving. it is differcult to slow the vehicle to a stop. it has also stuck when the car is started. at times the car will not start properly, only after repeated tries will it turn over.

The mileage listed is approximate as the car is still in for servicing. on the morning of 3/14/2012, i was slowing down to stop at a red light. the car felt like it was still accelerating, as if the cruise control was on. i hit the brakes but nothing happened. i ended up having to hold the brake down to the floor to make the car come to a stop. i tried shifting into neutral and the rpms shot up to 4. i shifted back into drive and the car still tried to accelerate. the whole time at the red light, the engine was revving and the brake felt like it was fighting the accelerator. when the light turned green and i took my foot off the brake pedal, the car accelerated. i pulled off into a parking lot and held the brake to the floor again to make it stop. i put the car in neutral and the rpms shot up again. i put it in park and the rpms were going to 5. i turned the car off thinking that may reset whatever the issue was. i waited 5 minutes before turning the car back on and when i did, the rpms again shot up to 4. i called the nearest ford dealership to make arrangements for service and started the car again. the same thing happened. i shifted into drive and as soon as i took my foot off the brake the car accelerated. the car seemed to be stuck in cruise control, fully accelerating. the car was taken straight to the dealership and when the technician started the vehicle, he experienced the same issue. after a diagnostic test, the technician told me that the issue was with the air intake and also stated there was an electronic update for the taurus available. i asked if this would correct the acceleration issue and he stated that it should.

I was driving at approximately 40 mph when i was approaching a red light. i took my foot off the gas pedal and hit the brakes and had to used two feet to stop the car. the motor was still trying to drive me forward. i reached down and pulled the gas pedal up and the engine slowed down. this was a one time occurrence for me so far, but i read the issues with the taurus cruise control and was wondering if this has anything to do with that issue? i did not have the cruise on during the incident and it does not even work at this point. it just stopped working about 6 months ago.

2005 ford taurus - throttle sticks, vehicle will speed up without pushing on the gas. this has occurred numerous times, quite scary regardless of location or speed. this has occurred in town and on the interstate. vehicle must be put in nuetral and the gas peddle must be pushed to the floor to get vehicle back under control.

Numerous times, when the foot was removed the accelarator, the engine did not return to idle but contiued as if your foot was still on the accelarator.would have to apply brakes and get off the road. extremely hard to stop if going very fast. kill the engine, raise the hood and barely touch throttle conrol where the accelarator cable is attached and it would snap back to the idle position. this has happened at least 7 or 8 times. extremly dangerous!

When either driving or staying still, my 2005 ford taurus would suddenly accelerate to where pressing on the break would not control the car. i would either try to lift the acceleration peddle up with my hand, which broke the pedal in one case, or put the car into neutral, which would rev the rpm's to 4000+. i had two near crashes and when i was driving it to the ford dealership in july 2011, was stuck on a highway and had to get a tow because the pedal broke while trying to stop the car from accelerating. i called ford immediately after my incident and was promptly told that the car was fine, that they had no reports of this issue and that driving my car was safe. i didn't even think to contact the nhtsa until i heard the report on cnn. i have also done some research and found hundreds of others who have had the same issue and people that have had loved ones die because of this. i have had to drive another car for fear that if i drive my ford, i'll die. i cannot sell the car because i don't want someone else to possibly die. please help.

I was driving and felt the accelerator pad click, then i noticed that my speed was increasing. as i applied the brake, i noticed that the car was not slowing down. i swerved down a side street and pull on my emergency breaks and turned off the engine. it began at approximately 30 mph and accelerated itself to approximpately 40 mph. the dealership determined that my throttle cable was erroded and needed a replacement. i got a new throttle cable. about a month later, i felt the click again and i saw my speed go up again; this time, it unclicked. i contacted the dealership and dropped off the vehicle. the dealership determined this time that the tube in which the throttle cable is inserted was filled was debris so that caused another jam. the dealership did not charge me again for this service but it leads to me suspect if there are further issues with the accelerator itself.

My car began to accelerate with very little pressure on the gas pedal. i pushed the brakes all the way down but brakes wouldnt stop the car. the engine revved so high i had no choice but to just shut the car off. i then tried to restart the car and it revved really high again. i have had it towed and worked on twice and the throttle keeps getting stuck. ill be driving and it just get stuck and i have a hard time getting it to stop with my brakes. my cruise control is no longer working as well.

I was taking my daughter to school one day and i had to break while i was coming up behind someone. when i pressed my break, i could feel my car still trying to go..almost as if i were pressing the gas and the breaks at the same time. when the car wouldn't come to a complete stop, i put it in neutral and the rpms went up to 4,000-4,500. i tapped on the gas a couple of times while it was in neutral and the acceleration finally stopped.the same thing occurred again while i was in walmarts parking lot. again, i had to put it in neutral and tap the gas to get the acceleration to stop. when my car is idling, the rpms fluctuate between 1,000 and 2,000 as if i would be tapping on the gas, but the gas pedal isn't being touched. i have read other peoples complaints, and some have said the problem may have been the cruise control, but my cruise control has never worked; i bought my car used. i have not yet had an accident over it, but i'm sure it is only a matter of time. this definitely needs to be checked into.

Car was speeding up by itself and took all i could do to stop it. on 02.23.12 took car into dealership and they tested. said the throttle cable; broke off a corner of cover and freed up cable. still having problems, intermittently, with car driving without use of gas pedal and not slowing down until i force it to.

Was driving down the interstate, trying to slow down to get off at an exit, and the car would not slow down, and the engine was revved. finally stopped the car, and looked under the hood, and there was a piece of plastic holding the throttle open.

Sticky throttle. engine race to 3200 rpms. i had a hard time stopping the vehicle.

I noticed a musty smell first. after a heavy rain i noticed that my passenger foot well was soaking wet under the floor mat. i dried it up. next time it rained it was wet again and i did notice some dripping from the top right of the foot well. other water is coming in somewhere else, maybe behind the carpet as it is getting more wet every time it rains. the entire floor is soaked with water.

First, i want to say that this vehicle is well mantained and serviced on a regular basis. it was a pleasent summer day but had more of a autumn feeling wether. i was driving on the interstate in east tennessee, i had just merge onto the interstate and had been driving for maybe 10 minutes. i slowed down for traffic to about 40 mph as i crest a hill. when i stepped back onto the gas (going down hill now), i felt the car shift into 4 gear. i then felt, and heard a pop similiar to a blowout, but in reality it was the car sliding out of gear. i had only managed to reach about 50mph when the car stop accelearating, (i put on my hazards) i was trying to coast to a safe place, but the constrution projects made no place to pull off. within 5 seconds, a car traveling behind me was bumped by a tractor trailor and was knocked into me. my ford mechanic says the transmission is shot and the catalytic converter went out (was that the popping noise? i wonder.) $3500 to fix this problem. i have google 05 transmission problems and have found numerous over 500 problems that have to do with. i don't know whether ford was trying to save a few dollars, or if they were trying to save fuel mileage, but this transmission is a serious problem. i will not buy another ford if this problem doesn't get resolve by ford recalling these transmissions. last laugh, insurance compainies will repair any car to the quality it was just before the wreck (no better, no worse.). since my transmission went out before the car wreck, they can replace it, ergo... the insurance covers the body work, but will not cover the transmission. my question to ford is does someone have to die before you fix your errors. my father worked at ford for 22 years; he would be.... really disappointed to see what ford pass for quality.

I was driving my ford taurus at about 30 mph when the vehicle unexpectedly accelerated up to 45 mph even after releasing the gas pedal completely. brakes slow the car but with more resistance than usual, and manually parking and restarting did not help the problem. i was able to drive about 5 miles home without ever touching the gas, but often having to ride the brakes. the engine revs very high (about 3,00rpm) even in park. the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic but the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was apx 140,000. i dont know how this can pass without a recall as i read of many other instances of this with my year, make and model.

The transmission on my six year old vehicle failed after only 79,000 miles. there are multiple reported incidents of transmission failure for the 2005 ford taurus (please see http://www.carcomplaints.com/ford/taurus/2005/transmission/transmission_failure.shtml for a list of similar incidents). i believe that nhtsa needs to conduct a full investigation of ford motor company to ensure that it is following safety and construction standards. surely, a defective and faulty transmission is not what consumers should expect when purchasing a vehicle. i notified ford motor company about this issue, and they refuse to take responsibility for the construction of their vehicle. this is a very dangerous defect, and could cause serious injury and loss of human life. since ford refuses to acknowledge its responsibility for the issue, i expect the nhtsa, as a government agency, to fulfill its responsibility to consumers to investigate the construction and safety of 2005 ford taurus transmissions. i appreciate your response, and i am willing to provide any necessary additional information.

I just recently purchased a 2005 ford taurus and it was running fine for like 2 days. then the cruise stopped working a few days later the accelerator begin to stick. i was going about 30 and suddenly the car began to take off on its on and i nearly hit the car in front of me. i had to steering off the road and pressing the brakes was very hard. this seems to be a trend for the car and is extremely dangerous!! someone should not have to die for this to be recalled!!
07/08/2011103000
While in parking lot, car suddenly accelerated without touching the gas pedal. held the brakes to keep car from moving and put the car in neutral. when i put the car in neutral, the rpms when up to 7000, gas pedal was not being touched. after i got the car stopped and while in neutral, i quickly pumped the gas pedal once and the engine came back down to idle. this has happened on the highway as well. i am surprised by the many reports of this on the ford taurus that it isn't a recall. this is the same type of issue toyota had. sudden acceleration. does someone have to die before this gets recalled?
05/27/201163600
While sitting at a stop light i felt the car trying to lunge forward. when the light turned green and i slowly released my foot from the break the car began to accelerate and move on its own without me stepping on the gas pedal. i had difficulty stopping the car completely and pulled to the side of the road and put the vehicle in park. the car started revving up and becoming very loud. i put the car back into drive and the car drove on its own. this happened again today, but the acceleration speed was more aggressive this time, i pulled over into a empty parking lot i was too afraid to be behind another vehicle because although the brakes were working i had to press all the way down to floor to get them to stop the vehicle completely. what's even worse is now my car has started to accelerate in reverse as well. after seeing the same complaint over and over on this site i do not know why the car has not been recall. this is very dangerous. i felt afraid for my life! and by the way last week i made my final car payment for this car and just days later this happened!

This happened in a 2005 ford taurus se sedan with the 3.0l vulcan v6 flex-fuel engine. car was just hitting 85,000 when the problem appeared. car began to make a squealing noise- which turned out to be the belt beginning to wear heavily. it was changed, and the noise became even worse. now an added clunking sound began to manifest itself. it was found out to be the a/c compressor beginning to break. in fact, a knut or something had become lose, which was the clunking noise i heard. the whole compressor had to be replaced and filled (so i can use the a/c.) and a new belt had to be bought as well. if this compressor wasn't replaced, it would have failed- causing it to seize, the belt to break, and my engine to quickly overheat and probably crack. it took around 2 hours to replace everything- including letting the broken a/c compressor out. illegal, but i could not afford taking it to the dealer and getting charged $800+ so i had my brother in law do it. altogether i spent around $350 for parts and labor. i later learned, from my mechanic friend, that taurus' hitting around 80k have this same a/c compressor failure like clockwork. it's a common problem, that is expensive, and should have been fixed if it is known what causes it.

Drive at about 20mph. try to hit the brake to stop. car make very loud noise. found gas pedal not come back. take to dealer, dealer told me gas pedal stick due to some spot on throttle body. so have to change the throttle body.

The best way to describe what happened is that it seemed to be doing exactly what the toyotas were doing, accelerating on it's own. when i would get to approx. 50-55mph, i could feel the gas pedal stick. the car would then accelerate on it's own without my foot on the gas, up hills, on flat roads, etc. the brakes would stop the car, but you could hear the engine idling in a higher gear, and when the brake was released, the car would take off without gas being applied. once, when i was parking, the car was doing this and when i placed the gear in p the rpm's when past 3 before i shut the car off. when i called the ford company to inquire about this, they instantly knew what the problem was and said they had seen 3 come in with the same problem already. the problem ended up being the throttle body and cruise control cables. i just felt that i needed to let you know of the situation as it concerned me while i was driving and if it has happened enough that one dealership knows the problem instantly without seeing the car, i think this may be an issue that warrants a recall of some kind.

2005 taurus - driving car and came to a stop. when i went to excelerate transmission would not catch gear. there was no slipping of gears, noises or any other kind of warrning that the transmission was going out. i have found a couple links on the internet where this has happened to serval people with the same year car. ! please see posted links, this needs to be made a recall! http://www.carcomplaints.com/ford/taurus/2005/transmission/transmission_failure.shtml http://www.aboutautomobile.com/complaint/2005/ford/taurus/automatic+transmission

2005 ford taurus sel. 91,00 miles. the gas pedal sticks and the car accelerates without depressing the gas pedal. the mechanics i have spoke with are blaming anything from the throttle body to a defective cruise control cable. i am not driving the car due to the dangerous condition. i have researched other complaints on the internet regarding this problem wit the 2005 taurus. i am concerned. is there anything the dot can do to determine if this is a defective issue with the ford taurus?

The car will accelerater on its own when your foot is not on the accelerator and the curise is not on. when placing the car in park the rpm will go up to 4000 place back in drive and there is a loud thud from the engine. feels like the breaks go directly to the floor and literally causes the breaks to burn up. i have gone threw a new set of pads in a month due to this issue.

I have been in the automobile service industry for the past 40+ years as a technician, technician trainer, servive manager, and shop owner. in my present capacity i manage a service department for a franchise which supplies used vehicles to the subprime credit market. the number one selling vehicle for us is the 2000 - 2006 ford taurus. in the last 6 months i have had two complaints of sudden vehicle acceleration for no apparent reasons. after test driving the vehicles and duplicating the complaints i found that the cruise control cable end which connects to the throttle linkage becomes unable to remain connected to the throttle lever tab on the throttle body linkage due to wear over time. when it becomes disconnected it will catch on the throttle linkage tab during decelleration at times and cause the idle speed to stay elevated even the accelerator pedal is not applied, the increase in rpm causes intake manifold vacuum to decrease which decreases the power brake booster assist, this coupled with the increased rpm makes the vehicle extremely difficult to stop. i am aware of one possible ocurrence which may have resulted in an accident. i believe it would be in the interest of a multitude of motorists to look into this potential safety issue.

I own a 2005 ford taurus. in january 2010, the gas pedal started to stick. in order to slow the car, i have to stand on the break pedal and put the car in neutral. when i have regained control of the car while it is in neutral, i jazz the gas pedal and it pops up audibly. this has been happening with increasing frequency. the car has been to the ford dealer 4 times for this problem and it remains unresloved. i am requesting a safety recall on this vehicle before a serious accident occurs.
