1998 ford windstar. abs pump has failed and brakes are not working properly. there was no brake light on dash to denote a problem and nothing coming up when tests were run on computer. all mechanics thought it was the master cylinder and as a results i had 5 put on the van from christmas 2003 to present. called ford directly and said that they would note the problem, but nothing that they can do to fix the problem. i cannot drive my family in the vehicle as afraid of having accident in result of pump not functioning. cost just for pump is $2200.00 not including labor. very upset that ford will not stand behind their product and attempt to help.*ak

From the date of purchase, january 2002, brakes and abs system has failed ,peyton-cramer ford has charged us to replace an abs ring, 2 sensors and a tire. after all of these repairs peyton-cramer ford has failed to correct the braking problem and now they want to charge $1,300 for a new abs system. the vehicle currently has 40k miles. the transmission has currently gone out as well within the past week. i feel that this matter should be investigated because i feel that this vehicle is a lemon due to the low mileage on the vehicle and because of the multiple problems with this vehicle. peyton cramer ford is unwilling to assist with the current abs problem. the transmission will be covered because i currently have an extended warranty on my vehicle. however, the abs is not covered by my current extended warranty and ford motor is unwilling to offer any goodwill assistance with the repair. *ak

On 12/7/01 my abs light came on and the trac off light started blinking. i took it into the inver grove ford, mn and the diagnosis was broken wheel sensor and had to replace the ecu. that cost us $1600.00. then on 12/8/02, the 2 lights came on again. i called ford very upset and was told that there is only a 12 month/12,000 miles warranty on the part. after another diagnostic test, it was determined the ecu again went out. ford offered to pay $500.00 of the $1147.00 estimate, but it infuriates me that automobile companies can get away with this type of highway robbery and only warranty such an expensive piece for a short period of time. it is now a safety issue, because my anti-lock brakes do not work! what am i to do?

On december 16th 2009. i was driving down west 117th towards madison/lakewood in cleveland, ohio and was trying to come to a stop (slow down and stop) to allow an ambulance to pass (there was a car in front of me that was also slowing downa nd that came to a stop at the street lot)this is on a major street near an highway intersection. i put my foot on my brake to slow down the vehicle and come to a stop but it would not slow down or stop. the brake had went out. i ended up hitting the car in front of me hard (an suv) and doing quite a bit of damage to my vehicle. the other driver vehicle was so far as i could tell undamaged. on my vehicle the front light is broken, my bumper is damaged, and my hood is damaged. i, myself and the driver i hit could have gotten seriously injured. so far we are bothfine and no injuries occurred. however he may turn around and come after me if he decides to. and i now can not drive my vehicle. i received a recall notice on my vehicle brake about a month ago around early november. maybe in end of october. the very day of my accident (happened around 12:15 noon) i was going to go home and call ford about the recall. there is a worldwide recall on my vehicle model and many others. and i have had nothing but problems since i bought it. i have had to make numerous repairs on it and still had problems and this accident. ford should be held responsible for this and should compensate me with another vehicle in good condition especially since i have spent so much time and money into replacement parts for this windstar. or give me my money back or something. i'm glad my kids were not with me when this happened and that the man i hit was also alone and is ok. what can be done about this? i have had to replace the following items since i got this vehicle: o2 sensors (both), alternator, belt, windshield wiper blade, and make back blades don't work at all, the transmission, the steering column box, door handle and components inside and more!

We have finally got ford to do something about the cruise control switches on the 1990-2000s ford windstars i have a 1998 ford windstar ( even though i have been informed by my local dealer that they will only be putting on the harness for the switch when i told them i had already had my switched replaced about a year ago for a brake fluid leak they informed me they would not check my abs system for damage unless i paid for them for the service. the service tech said quote ( hold on now we are only putting on the harness anything else will cost extra) all there going to do is put in the harness i guess any other damage done by these systems will just have to be just shoved up our tail pipes !!!! even though the ccds system is the cause of all the problems...this seems to be the way of doing business for ford i have all kinds of trouble also with this van like ,door lights signal always on even if the doors are shut the doom and inside door lights stay on all the time....when i turn on the air it puts out cold air only though the defrost switch and then under the back seat it blows hot air instead ..when i drive for a few miles and turn the van off it sounds like a popping noise from the back around the muffler my mec. says that the muffler tail pipe system on this model is not worth a flip he says you could not give him one of these vans there a piece of junk the doors lock and unlock on there own come on people look at all the signs about the ford windstars like my daddy use to say this is a fire looking for a place to happen i will never buy another ford again'''''. *tr

1998 ford windstar has rusted engine subframe, which, if lets go would cause side axle and front tire to seperate from van and cause loss of steering control, loss of braking, and possible accident.this was discovered while van was on ramp for oil change . received recall on rear axle cracking and recall was done today by ford. brought subframe problem to the dealers attention and they stated that ford was fully aware of this problem but could do nothing about it because ford had not issued a recall on this time. the service station owner which did my oil change expressed an opinion that he felt that the front subframe rusting was indeed much more of a concern than the cracking of the rear axle which has been recalled by ford. at present i am afraid to drive my windstar with this structural defect and i feel ford should remedy this defect in the same manner that they did with the cracking rear axle.

Recall 09s09 1998 ford windstar- having trouble with speedometer/odometer and abs brakes. had wired harness installed by ford dealership. i feel as though they didn't do a proper inspection as pertaining to all the problems this seems to be causing for many people. i can't drive my vehicle because my brakes keep locking up and my speedometer suddenly drops to zero and the vehicles transmission sounds awful. ford told me all they need to replace is the wired harness is this true.i had my vehicle serviced a couple of weeks ago thought it was the brakes. they were done last september 2009.my mechanic couldn't figure out brakes.pulled 15 amp fuse for speed control .put back in after harness was installed still brakes locking up and speedometer acting up.

While i was driving on june 18, 2007 i realize the abs lights would stay on. i check the fuses and relays couldnt solve this issue. when i lifted up the hood i notice leaking from deactivation sensor under the master cylinder. i assume the master cylinder went out on me so i replace the master cylinder didnt solve the problem. i was furious meaning the vehicle i own and i depend on this van to go to work and home. when brake is leaking down under the abs ecm it can caused fire but i don't want to chance it me still this van. i don't want to experience tragedy or anyone who must go through this. so, i left the van in garage until i get funds to fix this issue. i also replace the abs ecm twice but it is still burning out my abs module. or we need to investigate this issue to ford dealership im sure other victims experience same thing. it is very dangerous driving when you know brake fluid leaking from master cylinder. please for safety issues investigate this windstar 98 lx model. *tr

The abs engages on dry pavement under normal braking conditions. the abs light did not come on. my mechanic changed two of the abs sensors to no avail. after the abs light remained on, i brought it to the ford dealer. they changed the left front abs sensor. the abs light went out, the problem still exists under normal braking on dry pavement. i am sorry i did not leave it alone when the abs light came on as the brakes worked fine. i would rather have the abs not working than working improperly. i grew up on vehicles without abs. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1998 ford windstar. the brake indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. whenever the brake pedal was depressed, the speedometer would malfunction. the contact took the vehicle to a mechanic and was informed that there was a brake fluid leak. the technician further stated that the speedometer failure was linked to brake fluid ingressed into the abs module. the manufacturer has not been notified. through online research, the contact found an investigation number pe08035 for the same failure. the investigation was closed with no recall issued, but he believes that the investigation should have led to a recall. the mechanic replaced a vehicle speed deactivation switch to stop the leaking; however, the abs module still needs to be replaced. the contact believes that the manufacturer should be responsible for the repair. the current and failure mileages were 82,818.

My vehicle is having intermittent braking problems due to the abs/ecm failure problem. the vehicle often brakes normally but occasionally brakes jerky- stopping poorly at best. the abs light comes on intermittently as well. my mechanic thought that the abs control module would need to be replaced. i now see that this problem is widespread among windstar vehicles, and as it is a dangerous condition, i want to know what will be done to repair these errant vehicles? in this economy, i have little money for such an expensive part! i am a very careful driver and i leave a good deal of braking distance just in case my brakes act up. at least until i can afford to fix them - or ford recalls my car and does the right thing. *tr

When we purchased the van, we also bought a diamondkote warranty ,for 499.99$ and told at the time of purchase that is was a good warranty.we then found out that we should not have been sold the warranty and plaza ford lincoln will not honor it, we can't even get a refund, so we spoke to someone at diamondkote and this person told us that we should not have been sold the warranty and have been trying to get a refund ever since, either from plaza ford lincoln or diamondkote. i had intentions of suing ford motor company two years ago when my husband took my two daughters to halifax, because my 8 year old had cancer at the time, she had a appointment at the i.w.k hospital and it was by the grace of god that thay were not killed when the front suspention spring broke in which case my husband lost steering. i spoke to a lawyer who sadly told, because there was no death or injury there was nothing he could do,well my 8 year old who is now cancer free was so scared, she still gets very scared to get in a vehicle. i could go on but for now this is just the begining. i am going to pursue the matter of the diamondkote warranty further, and possibly more.we have had alot of vehicals before but never a ford with as much trouble as this has been.

I purchased my 1998 windstar with approx 20,000 km on it in 1999. just after the warranty expired (at 60,000 km) i noticed 2 large bubbles in the paint on the two front doors. i took the car to the ford dealership where they agreed to pay 80% of the cost of repainting. this was not entirely agreeable to me but i felt i had no choice. my vehicle how has 86,000 km on it and the paint is peeling on the roof and around the sliding door. i have contacted ford canada but have not heard back from them as yet. other problems encountered include having to replace a motor for the power windows, the fan mechanism (the blower would not move off of defrost), a leaking brake cylinder as well as what i would consider standard maintenance such as brakes, tires. i am also having intermittent problems with the electrical system eg. the warning bell signalling that the lights have been left on or the keys are in the ignition goes off for no reason. this then prevents me from being able to lock the vehicle.

The first item listed under other was for a power steeringn leak, which ended up being a power steering rack that needed to be replaced. my car had just gone out of warranty, so a portion was paid for by ford. i also had to get a front end alignment when the new rack was put in. the next day i drove it and it was making the same noise as before. i returned to the dealer where it was determined that they also need to replace the return hose for the power steering. they said they missed that and didn't charge me anymore. my service advisor is an extremely nice and understanding person. august 2003 problems with the rear brakes and master cylinder. the car is not at a ford dealer. that repairis 615.00. i have more problems, but these are the two big ones and the brakes are the current issue.

Head gasket failure. faulty head gasket design in my opinion abs/traction control unit. current problem tsb states that fuel tank manufactured with incorrect depth - fuel pump wiring is rubbed until electrical short occurs - and fuel pump fuse blows - vehicle is then stuck in traffic, in the middle of an intersection etc. fords recommended fix is to replace the fuel tank and pump assembly however, they will not contribute anything to the cost of the repairs caused due to their faulty design.

I sent the following in an email to ford motor company, and also talked with their "customer service". they said that they could not do anything about this dispute between the dealer rep and myself, as it was a field decision. the original repair was a rebuild of the drum brake on the right rear wheel, the same wheel that later suffered a catastrophic failure of the shoes. luckily, we were driving at over 35 mph, so the wheel did not lock up until we stopped at a friends house. the entire hub assembly had to be rebuilt after the brake siezed. note: this is the second brake rebuild. the car has also suffered from broken tie rods. ======================================================== the parsons dealership that rebuilt my right rear brake last october will not admit that the failure of the brake pads, and subsequent complete failure of the brake assembly last week which required replacing the drum, is covered under their warranty (12,000 or 12 months.) they say it was due to a rusted parking brake cable that seized. i say that is a big load of baloney....even if it was rusted (in a pretty new car!) then they should have seen that last year. the total cost of repair on 9/20/02 was $639.88. i want ford to: 1) make parsons return my money, and 2) reprimand parsons for poor customer service. i will not buy a car from them again, nor will they ever see my car again - despite their admonition at the bottom of their invoice that says "warranty 90 days or 4000 miles on adjustments, align, balance. all other repairs covered 12 months or 12000 miles. customer must return to parsons ford for defective repairs. no refunds if customer takes to another repair facility. i won't go into the delays (a full week to repair the drum and brake assembly).

I am seeking action to alleviate the cost of maintenance problems i have experienced with my 1998 3.8l v6 ford windstar gl. over the past few years, my windstar has displayed reoccurring and extensive mechanical problems in the front end, brakes, and engine that have resulted increasing amounts of time and money spent on repairs. from research, i have found that our difficulties are not an isolated event, and are in fact a common problem in the 1998 windstar, and are the same problems found in the 1995 windstar. the most recent event was the requirement to have the head gasket replaced. the local ford dealer provided this service which cost $1500.00 in parts and labor. upon completion of the repairs the van was not roadworthy, a new short block was needed due to damage caused by the faulty head gasket. i have been quoted over $6000.00 for this job. in addition to the mounting repair costs, i am forced to rent a car so that we have transportation while we consider options with our windstar. my windstar has less than 100,000 miles. it is not uncommon these days to have vehicles operate this long before requiring the first tune-up. in order to maintain this van, i have spent the time i have ownwd this vehicle and a lot of money taking my windstar into service centers to have inferior parts, such as the plastic tie-rod ends and brakes, replaced many times. i have also spent a fortune on rental cars while our windstar sat unserviceable. we have born this cost with the expectation that investing money in repair would result in safe, reliable transportation for our family. with this major repair, the months of exhaustive diagnosis and trial repair jobs to fix the problems that arrise, the multiple tie rod end replacements, and brake system repairs, i feel that i am entitled to compensation from the ford motor company. *ak

The brake warning light came on dimly and stayed on. i took the 1998 windstar to a mechanic, who informed me that there was brake fluid in the abs module that was causing the problem. i was also told that this situation could cause a fire. from what i have been told by my mechanic and the ford service technicians at two ford service centers the abs system valves which contained brake fluid sat on top of the abs module and were somehow connected. this design, apparently could lead to brake fluid getting into the abs module. i have asked ford repeatedly if the brake fluid in the abs module could cause a fire, but have not received a straight answer from them. my concern was that this situation could cause a fire shouldn't it be made known to owners of the ford windstars or any vehicle with this particular abs sytsem design? *ak

The abs warning light remains on while driving. i had the system checked by a mechanic and was told the abs sensor was detecting a crack in a component used by the abs system. i indicated that this was the result of a manufacturing defect and not wear and tear. the costs of the repairs will exceed $500.00 because the axle will need to be replaced. in my opinion this is a serious safety issue. like others that have submitted similar complaints to your site, i purchased this vehicle primarily because of its safety features. i should not have to pay the costs of repairs for a manufacturing defect especially related to a safety feature.

The abs system has failed on numerous occasions , twice due to control module failure, and several times due to cracked sensor rings and sensors. i have just had the module replaced for the second time and 3 days later the abs light is on again. the last time it failed, my brakes were inoperative on dry pavement, alternately locking up and disengaging, i narrowly avoided collisions. i have noticed many similar reports and wonder when a recall is going to be ordered. additionally i have experienced severe binding and grinding in the steering, particularly in cold weather or when the vehicle sits overnight. a firestone service center feels the problem is probably due to rack and pinion problems. i am told by ford that my vehicle not covered under nhts recall 97v165001. again i notice many other similar reports . when is nhtsa recall 97v165001 going to be extended to include other production dates.l. *ak

Abs failed completly along with the rest of the brake system. service dealer says a geared ring that reflects to a sensor cracked. this loosened the ring along the axel shaft so that it was no longer located correctly. the failure was complete, and with no warning left me without braking ability on a small hill terminating onto a very busy highway with my 9 yr old daughter with me. it was only great luck that no truck, bus, or car was coming when i rolled right into the highway instead of stopping. no accident resulted, just a very close call. the service dealer reported that i was the second windstar in the day with the same problem. this is a small town to have two (rare events)! he also inferred that it was rare and thought there was no reason to call ford. how many other dealer are not reporting this failure?

There are two significant safety issues that we continue to experience with our 1998 ford windstar. the transmission continues to intermittently neutral at the worst possible times. the effect of this is that the vehicle will begin into an intersection and then the transmission will disengage and the rpm of the engine will race. at this point the transmission might engage after several seconds with a jolt, screeching the tires. in some cases we have had to shift into park and back into drive several times to get the transmission to engage. when this first occurred, we had only owned the car for less than two months and it would only happen every few hundred miles. ford had to place a flight recorder in the vehicle to verify that it was happening. ford replaced the transmission in early 1999. we began experiencing the problem again in the summer of 2000 and ford has been unable to repair this problem. we have had it in the shop a total of 12 times with the symptom manifesting itself multiple times in between. the vehicle has been in the shop almost continually since july 15th, 2000 and is still there as of this submission. if it were not for extreme defensive driving and anticipation of the problem that has helped us avoid an accident so far. however, we continue to have the car delivered to us that is supposed to be repaired and we continually have the same problem. the second problem is also reoccurring and deals with the abs brakes continually going out of adjustment. when they are out of adjustment the stopping power of the car in emergency situations is greatly impaired. the brakes are self-adjusting but continue to be out of adjustment. we have had this problem looked at by four different ford dealerships and they readjust the brakes that only corrects the problem for a short period of time. the brakes continue to go out adjustment and ford denies that this is a problem, even though it continues to happen.
 1. transmission will shift erratically , and a loud noise will occur and motor will shake. ford engineering was sent out and determined transmission needed work, but no dealer will honor warranty. 2. brakes will fail in the winter and in slippery roads, causing pedal to go to floor and vehicle will not stop. 3. all doors lock by themselves/ lights flash on and off, and heater and defroster motor will come on even without the key in the igntion. vehicle will even start up by itself. *ak

I bought this van in feb of98 and had nothing but problems with the front end i had it in the shop twice and the first time it had to have new rotors and brake pads and new tires that i had to pay for.the second time they said nothing was wrong but it ate up two more tires.they said it had to be the tires. i reported this to the department of transportation safety administration and then on feb 99 the brakes went out again.i also tried to work with college ford. my husband decided to trade the van in on a toyota camery because we were not safe in the van and ford did not want to help us in any way. we paid $25000.00 for a safe vehicle but got a lemon and no help. $5500.00 out of my pocket to lease the camery and all the payments for the van just wasted.i just thank god we wern't killed.( dot number: p215 tire size: 70r15 97s )

The brakes suddenly started failing and the brake petal would go to the floor like a defective master cylinder. the master cylinder was replaces 3 times at 2 different shops because they were sure it was the master cylinder and they thought perhaps it was a defective replacement. the defect ended up being the antilock brake system (abs) hydraulic control unit (hcu). if you do an internet search for windstar hcu, you will find windstar reviews rating their brakes as significant problems specifically stating an occasional problem on this vehicle is failure of the antilock brake system (abs) hydraulic control unit (hcu). the cost to repair the abs hydraulic control unit is estimated at $975.00 for parts, without traction control, and $1,200.00 for parts, with traction control, and $162.50 for labor. this problem also affects the 1997 windstar. http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/reliability.aspx?year=1998&make=ford&model=windstar and http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/reliability.aspx?year=1997&make=ford&model=windstar this is potentially a life threatening problem and should be subject to a recall if it is bad enough than in auto reviews they cite it as a problem with ford windstars. *nm
