Starting about a year ago, the speedometer, rpm meter swings around. odometer light doesn't come on when you start the car and little while later odometer light comes on. fuel guage also shows incorrect amount of fuel. i think the whole odometer control panel is non-functional.

In march, 2007, the transmission in my 1999 ford windstar died at 106,653 miles. i paid $2,985.91 to have the transmission replaced at the local ford dealership in lebanon, oregon. in may of 2012, at 174,000 miles, i started having problems with the transmission again. the first repair shop i took it to told me the transmission was dead and that i needed to replace it. the second repair shop i took it to told me that the computer chip was bad and that it had probably damaged the transmission. i was told that i could replace the computer chip and see how long the transmission would last before it totally died. *tr

The windstar was parked in our driveway outside. engine cold and turned off. our son saw smoke outside coming from the engine compartment. we raised the hood carefully and put fire out with fire ext. and garden hose. fire was under the brake master cylinder on the drivers side engine compartment. wiring harness burned and other components by speed control deactivation switch catching fire. we had this switch replaced in a ford recall, but appears the repair was done incorrectly (fuse installed on wrong side of wiring harness, allowing the switch to remain hot). so fortunate that the car was not parked in the garage, for i would not be writing this review today!

1999 ford windstar: the brake pressure differential deactivation switch (scds) (2b264) located under the master cylinder (behind the air filter) has leaked an excessive amount of brake fluid. the fluid accumulates on the power connectors for the abs brake system which are powered by fuses 101 and 102 and are both 40 amp. the cruise control has failed and we are fearful that this leaking brake fluid will cause a fire.

First occurance of the abs light coming on resulted in producing diagnostic codes of c1185 c1242 and an abs rear sensor code. the abs light was very intermittent a first but now has become much more frequent. the light will display more so on bumpy roads and hot days. i depend on my abs system because i am handicaped and live in northern climate (snow and ice conditions). i can know longer depend on my abs system to help prevent an accident or an impact.

Intermittent problem: problems indicated by on board message center reads check brake lamps, check tail lamps check head lamps check rear turn lamps, check front turn lamps, noticed that interior lights will not work, auto locks will not work, key remote will not lock or unlock vehicle or open doors. get no codes from o b d ii. scanner. have replaced battery because it was 6 years old and wasn't putting out proper amps. thought would solve problem. it didn't. thought disconnecting battery for 30 min. would reset computer. seamed to work a couple of times, however, now believe it was just coincidence. sometimes when i start the vehicle everything is fine, however while driving, the message reappears and none the above mentioned, no longer work again. this is a driving hazard.
08/17/2011120259
Abs light is on continuously . overdrive jumping in and out of gear after driving it 30 minutes or more. i read the recall and safety report that brake fluid leaks on the abs switch connected to the master cylinder which can cause a catastrophic fire. i didn't recieve anything in the mail from ford on my vehicle on this problem as of yet. also the coolant line that ran under port injection was welded leaking water where it connects to the thermostat housing.

Intermittent abs light coming on and no cruise control functionality
04/10/201196000
Erratic behavior of the instrument cluster. all of the gauges; e.g, the speedometer and rpm gauges jump rapidly from 0 mph all the way as far as it will go, the gas gage jumps rapidly from empty to full and back again, temp from cold to hot etc. this happens often and then resumes normal activity again for a uncertain time. it;s really frightening when occurring. the ford dealer here, yukon ok, states the only cure is to replace the whole thing at a ridiculous cost of $ 632.00. the problem started in april of 2011 and continues today. we try not to drive it when this is going on.

My vehicle was running (while parked) and quit. the lights were still on, the radio still worked, and the heater was still blowing. the ignition key was off and out. i had to unhook the battery to shut the three off. replaced: ignition switch, pcm, control modual under the dash and nothing has changed the outcome. this is a 1999 ford windstar.

The dashboard guages, tachometer, speedometer, gas, and temperature go haywire constantly. one time on a hill, i could not put the shift lever in park so that i could assist a handicapped family member out of my vehicle. the tachometer needle was pinned to the right, and the shift indicater couldn't move to the right to engage park. i never knew how much gas i had, the speed i was going, or the running temperature of my vehicle. the check engine light ran constantly even though there was no code showing up in the emission code scanner.. $ sets of intake manifold gaskets were installed after i purchased the vehicle. 3 by ford, one by another mechanic. i have a cracked rear axle, the van sits at the dealership, and i am worried about the front-end sub-frame.

I own a 1999 ford windstar se - i have had major ongoing electrical issues with it for the past 6 months. i have seen 2 different ford dealerships and 3 different mechanics and no one can relieve the issue. my abs break light keeps coming on and off. when this began, i also began to loose other electrical components one by one, my power windows went out, my power mirrors no longer work, and my dash board needles jump all over the place. i've spent 1,700 in repairs and still this problem remains unsolved. just last month it sat at the ford dealership for 2 weeks for them to still tell me they have no idea how to fix it or what is causing the issue. please help!

On december 17, 2009 we took our 1999 ford windstar in to the cerritos ford dealership in ca. we received a letter from ford that our vehicle was being recalled (recall # 09s09) and as it turned out the van was leaking and they replaced the leaking switch and harness. before the work was even done, i told them that we were concerned about the abs light that was on on our dashboard. the recall summary states that the with a leaking scds, dealers will also inspect the abs control module connector and repair as necessary. repairs will be completed free of charge. on our invoice, the dealership failed to note our concern regarding the abs and never stated whether or not they inspected the abs control module connector. although i am aware that there could be other factors causing the abs light to show up, i am deeply concerned that the recall was not fully completed. i am aware that the issues we are having could result in a car fire. i just want confirmation that the inspection was done and if the connector needs to be repaired, that ford takes care of it with no out-of-pocket from me. i have contacted both the service manager at cerritos & ford co. directly. i was told the recall was completed although they cannot say whether or not the inspection of the abs control module connector was performed. they said i could pay for an expensive diagnostic test through the dealership where they could determine if there are issues with the abs that were a result of fraud or poor workmanship. either way, all of this will cost me a lot of money for something i asked to have taken care of at the time i brought the van in for the recall. i'm really frustrated and concerned about this as well as other issues pertaining to this van that i believe are recall related. our tail-lights won't work despite new bulbs, our brakes sometimes sputter and don't always stop immediately. we've had 4 close calls related to our brakes and i wonder how much of this is recall-related.

I was having trouble with the dashboard on my 1999 ford windstar last spring. all the gauges would go wacky and the abs light would come on. i took it into the luther ford dealer in fargo, nd and they could not figure it out. offered to replace front board where the gauges are for no charge i would just pay for the labor. i said no. went this way all summer and then the rpm needle just quit. this van has given me so much trouble regarding the wiring. i also had to replace the board in the back right panel of the van. and am always replacing light bulbs in the back. disgusted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i did take it in for the recall. the abs light is off now. do i have abs??????????? i felt they just wanted to get rid of me. *tr

The brake deactivation switch located under the master cylinder (behind the air filter) develops a leaking and abs light turn on in the dashboard in my 1999 windstar se van since on sept. 29, 2009, therefore mph is not working on speed-o-meter and mileage gets blank likes ---------. also heat & a/c fan motor is working fine but heat and a/c did not operate as well. cruise control has also quit. *tr

My speedometer wasn't reading correctly, possibly 10 to 15 miles an hour off, making it impossible to maintain the correct speed. i wasn't aware of the problem until i got a radar ticket in the mail. i knew what speed i was traveling according to the speedometer and it was different than was indicated. i found a web site which described the problem i was experiencing along with other problems that i was having. these were the speedometer, cruise control sometimes not working then quit altogether, abs light is on, sometimes the brake light would come on then go off, and the air conditioner would sometimes quit working. i thought they were unrelated but after the speeding ticket discovered they were caused by the same problem, a switch connected to the brake master cylinder. i took the measures to fix the problem and the abs light is still on but the other systems work fine now. the ac works, the speedometer works right, the cruise control works, and the brake light went out. *tr

1999 ford windstar. last week of july/2009, had ford dealer replaced front rotors & pads + rear shoes & machined rear drums. within 1st week after brakes job abs light began cycling on & off. after the 4th week, the abs light stayed solid. cruise control is also not functioning. ford dealer says might have to replace abs control module. read somewhere that controls of these two components might be affected by brake fluid leaking from master cylinder into a switch thereafter moisture will accumulate in the switch causing a short blowing fuse #10. also read that this brake fluid leakage might lead to a fire subsequently. repairs have been quoted to be high. will repair once have sufficient money saved. *tr

We recently purchased a used 1999 ford windstar sel minivan. we took it to an auto shop to have an oil change, and air filters replaced. upon returning home that evening, we noticed and smelled smoke from underneath the hood. when we went to look at it, we found white smoke coming up from behind the air filter and in front of the master brake cylinder. we thought that some fluids had been spilt and were simply burning off. when we went to drive it later that evening, the entire inside of the vehicle went dark. all of the interior lights, the odometer, speedometer, computer station, radio, climate control, windows, door locks, a/c, instrument panel, cruise control, and turn signals stopped working. we made it home safely as the head and tail lights were still working. upon inspection the following day, we found that the brake pressure differential deactivation switch (2b264) located under the master cylinder (behind the air filter) developed a leak. it had been leaking for some time and had literally eaten away the electrical plug. the wires had been eaten through as well and had crossed and caused the short. *tr

1999 ford windstar 3.0l 4sp auto. anti lock brake control module (tested at my expense $70) has gone bad, seems to be a big problem as many people have reported this. i have no odometer, speedometer or anti lock brakes. the engine also shuts off on its own on occasion, don't know if that's related or not. van runs good otherwise, has 107000 miles on it i think, since the odometer hasn't worked for 3 months. i cant even get a replacement module unless i go to ford and then i have to pay to have it programmed too. its shameful how much of the gauges are affected. i could live without the antilock, but i need a speedometer, my van is dead in the driveway until i work enough overtime to pay for something that shouldn't have gone out. *tr

2 weeks ago, my family and i had made a trip to the dallas texas area. a few days into the vacation we had gone to church. well, when we had left church, i noticed that the speedometer, the air conditioning system were not working. i also noticed that the abs was on. my father-in-law suggested that there was a fuse problem that made the ac stop working. we looked the fuses over and replaced the burnt ones according to the manual. the problem still persisted until we had left texas. on the way back home, (we were in oklahoma at the time) we had stopped at a gas station to fuel up. leaving the gas station onto the highway our dash lights went out completely (it was around 5 am). so i pulled over to see what the problem was, by this time the hood of the van was blowing out faint smoke. we looked under the driver's side and seen there was a fire. my wife and i immediately got our 3 kids out of the van and into our parent's car, while my father-in-law doused the flames. thank god we had road side assistance that towed us to the nearest autozone. we were shocked as to what exactly had happened. after replacing some more fuses, we got it up and running long enough to make it home. the speedometer still does not function properly and the abs light is still on. during that time we noticed that the connection under the master cylinder that housed the abs module had completely melted and had started the fire. i went on the internet to see if anyone else had the same problem. it seems to me that this has been a big issue with 1995-2003 windstar models. i have owned this vehicle for approximately 10 months and have not had any problems except for this. like i have stated before, i have 3 babies that could have been harmed or killed by a faulty design on this vehicle. i would like to know what could be done about this issue. i do not have the money at this time to have it repaired to insure that it wont happen again. the vehicle is drivable but does not have ac/heat/ or abs. *tr

1999 ford windstar abs electronic control module failure. abs warning light in dash has become illuminated and diagnostic codes indicate abs ecm relay failure. failure is due to a poor design, and poor materials choice in the construction of the anti-lock brake system electronic control module. module failure effects the traction control system and results in unexpected, random braking of the vehicle. removal of fuses of circuits 101 and 102, de-energize abs system and traction control and makes the vehicle operable again, without abs brakes or traction control. *tr

Our 1999 windstars idling while stationary in park or with brake depressed would become erratic and stall, with brakes depressed we would have to put vehicle in n to try to keep rpms up, vehicle stall when started to warm up then start up after turning key off then back on then the fuel pump went out we had to get the whole fuel system minus the gas tank replaced(pump, filter, sending unit) but when it was repaired we didnt get the fuel gage back and the mechanic couldnt find why. then we had static coming thru the speakers while vehicle was off and continued while driving and just stopped as soon as started, then our battery was constantly dead we had just bought a new battery so we had to unhook and hook up the cables everytime we drove or battery would die .then the interior lamps would not go off at times we had to make sure they were off on the dial at all times they would sometimes come on while we were driving and not go off. then we started having brake problems from the abs sensor to excessive fluid loss and pads(twice within a couple months) and drums needing completely repaired brake lights that wouldnt go off except when vehicle was turned off abs sensor flashing/staying on, we had problems starting vehicle but when we took it in starter, alternator, battery were fine it would take 30 mins or more to get vehicle to start but it would crank over, one day it stalled and wouldnt start we took it in and were told the fp(9 mos old) and pcm fuse was blowing. we had the fuel pump replaced but was still pulling 16 amps it ran for about 60 miles and died. new fuse and while driving guages went haywire, van died, while filling with brown smoke my son and i were in it both have asthma and dr said to keep him home til he felt better(he was complainig of being tired and sick ) all mechanics agrred it was wiring but couldnt find bad wires, missing grounds anywhere in the vehicle obdii didnt help. property damage is loss of vehicle, inside ruined window couldnt be put up. *tr

1999 ford windstar was observed producing smoke while sitting in the driveway at 7:00am 7/31/08 (the vehicle was last driven around 8:00pm the previous evening). the vehicle was started and driven to a local mechanic who reported the abs unit had burned and apparently smoldered out on its own. the abs unit was disconnected and the mechanic advised to contact a ford dealer to see if the item was under recall due to his personal experience in dealing with these defects. holman ford (mt. laurel, nj) service department was contacted and stated there were no recalls on that particular vehicle. note: roughly 1 month prior to the incident, the cruise control, air conditioner, and other electronic items stopped functioning. the service mechanic observed the cruise control unit appeared burned. *tr

My 1999 ford windstar has an issue with fuse #10 blowing which affects the speedometer (does not work) as well as a/c which only blows hot air. the abs brake light stays on and much more instrumentation is inoperable including cruise control. this first happened while on a highway in colorado. my husband and i pulled over and checked the manual. we replaced fuse #10 and all worked fine for a couple of months. then the fuse began blowing each time i turned on the car. we bought several extra fuses as we were getting ready to drive to our new home in arizona. this was july 11, 2008. the car ran for 12 hours on a new fuse with no problem. we stopped and rested for three hours and continued our road trip on july 12th. the fuse blew when i started the car and several new fuses never got it to work again. i had to drive the last leg (four hours) of my trip with no a/c (desert climate) and worst of all no knowledge of how fast i was going. that was scary. i took the car to a mechanic in tucson, az and they told me i had some recall issues and that i should go to a ford dealership. i looked up recalls and found a website with ford windstar owners who have similar issues. apparently, there is currently no recall for them at this time. they state it is under investigation. i hope so as i spent $1300.00 on a/c and heater problems last winter. my van has 115,000 miles on it and i need it to last me long enough until i get a new job in arizona. it is unsafe to drive at this time. thank you. *tr

I purchased a 1999 ford windstar a few months ago. i have had nothing but problems with it. in fact, i have spent more than half of what i paid for the vehicle in repairs in only 2 months. the reason for my complaint is that the most recent repairs have involved items that i feel are extreme safety concerns. 1- the power doors on my vehicle to not lock/unlock properly, making it unable to open the sliding doors. this was looked at by the ford mechanic today. i was told that the door latches were bad and were burning up the door lock actuators. i'm not sure if this is the reason, but also lately, my door ajar light comes on my dash and the interior lights are coming on intermittently while driving. i have 3 children, two of them in car seats and unable to get them selves out of a car. i am concerned that if something were to happen such as an accident or an emergency situation that i would not be able to get my children out of the vehicle. i am paying to have this repaired at the tune of around $1,000.00 which i think is a real rip off, due to fords poorly manufactured vehicle. 2. my brake light stopped working on the left side of my van. i changed the bulb and tested it, and did not fix the problem. i then noticed that my rear tail light is now not working. i had this checked out by the mechanic today, and was told it is the rear electronic control module which is going to cost me nearly $600 to fix. i'm not sure what would cause such a thing to fail, but this is definitely a safety concern, where lights come into play. i could have been rear ended due to this malfunction. i'm beginning to wonder if ford is in the auto making/selling business, or the service business. it appears to me that they are poorly manufacturing vehicles only providing job security for the mechanics. please investigate this situation. any help in remedying this and getting ford to pay for their mistakes would be greatly appreciated. *jb

First: while traveling 70 mph on an interstate in nc our van died. after safely pulling over, crossing 3 lanes of traffic, we had the van towed home to va and the mechanic said he changes 7-8 transmissions a week in ford windstar vans. we had fallen victim to this. we still have problems with the o/d light coming on and having to add transmission fluid frequently. second: our van interior and exterior lights dim and blink at random. the alert will also come on saying one of the doors is ajar leaving the interior lights on and doors unlocked. it will randomly change doors while driving. now the rear turning lights do not flash, the locks do not work, the interior and back exterior lights do not go out even with the key off and out. there will be random beeping and buzzing noises. the rear heat/air turns off and on at random even with the controls in the off position. there is a clicking under the dash when the rear heat or air is running. on inspection the mechanic found the alarm wires under the dash bare, unhooked, and exposed. he taped these hoping it would solve the problem. it has not. the local ford dealer is not reputable. it is a well known fact in the community that they break something else while fixing another to ensure a return visit. we have to travel 45-60 minutes to another dealer and they are so busy because they have to provide service for a large rural area. ford has never acknowledged phone calls or letters sent to them. we feel stuck with a lemon! *tr

I bought my 99 ford windstar sel in march of this year (2006) and not even a week after i bought it when i would pull out from red lights or stop signs and the van would either die on me in the middle of the road or would continuously hesitate. i brought it back to the dealership and the first time they said that it was my keys so they reprogrammed my keys. then it happened again as soon as i left the dealership, i brought it back a second time, they told me that they believed it had to do with my theft device. they assured me it was fixed then sent me home with it. a couple of days later it did the same thing again only this time every time i got in my van or closed my driver door from entering or exiting my van it would tell me on my message system that my driver door was ajar which lead to the interior lights being on. it did that the day i took it home from the dealership so i had to bring it back for a third time now for the re-occurring problem i was having and now with the door being said to be open. they finally said they found the problem and that ford told them that there was a similar incident with another van like mine and said that they had to replace the cip sycronizor. i was able to take my van home again and they problem had been fixed all except the message i still get to this day about my driver door being ajar when it isn't. it didn't do it to me before i took it to the dealership and now they won't fix it when it was a result from them having it. keep in mind each of the 3 times i had to take it in i had to leave it with them for 1-3 days each time! no loan car was offered to me so i was left with no car and i have 3 small children that i have to care for and need transportation for. *jb

I opened electronic sliding driver side door on my 1999 ford windstar van to load the car for a weekend trip. i kneeled in the door opening to position things in the back seat. without warning the door began to shut on its own. before i could jump out of the car, it had my calves stuck in the door. it did not automatically open as i was informed it should have when it hit my legs. my daughter was able to pull the door open and allow me to escape. my right calf was injured, though it did not break the skin, i have a large bruise from the doors impact approx. 2 inches high and 4 inches long. i took my car to the dealership (ted britt ford in fairfax virginia) where i purchased my van and carry an extended warranty. they have had my car in for numerous repairs, all related to the doors malfunctioning or other electrical problems. this is the first time there was an injury due to the door failure. my car is currently still in the shop for this malfunction. **about the number of failures listed below: i am uncertain if i should indicate one failure which resulted in an injurry or the multiple failures of the doors opening, refusing to open, or refusing to close that proceeded this last incident. i wll indicate one failure, meaning this last one. please call or email if i should indicate all the door failures we have incountered to date. **i am also a bit concerned as the repair department at ted britt ford in fairfax, where my van is regularly serviced, indicated that he believes it would have been impossible for the door to shut without my having done something to cause it. i am absolutely certain i could not have accidentally close the door. i am concerned they may not check out this problem adequately and just decide it was operator error. i reminded them of the multiple other door failures and electrical problems. i also let them know the lights in the van (that come on when you open a door), go on and off when i go over bumps as i am driving.

Just about everything that can go wrong with a car, i've experienced it as the owner of this 1999 ford windstar lx. i've had transmission work done, brake work, replaced tires (twice in 2 years), replace the battery and the starter. i came to this site because the car wouldn't start, wouldn't take a jump, wouldn't make a sound. i called to have it towed and the gentleman jiggled the key in the ignition and the car started. a few days later the same thing happened again. this time no one could start it. testing the battery and primary parts for starting the car proved that these parts were all functioning normal. a few hours and $127.00 later (not including the cost of towing the vehicle) i'm told the problem is with the anti-theft device. it is broken and needs to be replaced to the tune of about $900.00 with a 90-day warranty. recommendations to me were to get rid of the car. this particular part in all ford vehicles is poorly built. i haven't decided what i'm going to do at this point, however, i feel pretty sure my decision will not involve staying with ford. *jb

We purchased a 1999 ford windstar in september of 2002. the dash lights, especially the odometer and radio blink. they will dim and brighten, dim and brighten. there is no specific pattern. it is a random thing. it's almost like there is a short in the wiring or something. the incident date below is today, but this has been happening for months. i have been checking recalls religiously to see if this was one of them. also there is rust under the driver's seat. the carfax report did not show any water damage to this vehicle. it almost appears like this piece did not get painted. *jb

My van was barely out of warranty when the o/d off light began flashing and the check engine light came on. the ford dealer told me that the check engine light was a result of a broken sensor weld on my intake manifold to the tune of approx. $900. they also stated that the o/d off light meant that the entire transmission needed replaced to the tune of $2,700. all this for being 1 month and 500 miles out of warranty. plus, i see that many people with ford windstars are experiencing the same thing at 35,000 miles and 70,000 (twice) so i see that i will undoubtedly have something to look forward to when the warranty runs out on the transmission... almost like the darned thing is deliberately designed to create a huge repair bill the moment it is out of warranty.

I was at a stop light at a major intersection and when the light turned green i heard a loud sound. i tried to accelerate but my car would not move forward. the engine just revved. i thought i ran something over due to the sound so inspected got out to inspect the car. i found nothing. i got back into the car and turned car off and turned back. the car would not drive. i put the car in reverse and managed to get off the road. i had the car towed to the dealership. i was told by the dealer sutton ford in matteson il. that the transmission just broke and would cost me $3000.00. i have had this car less then 2 years. i had an extended warranty that just expired a few months ago. my obd light was on but was told by the dealer it was a sensor. they could turn it off but it wasn't anything major. after reading all the complaints i'm sure it is major. since purchasing this car, i have had to replace tires at least every six months, major engine repair, alternator repair, as well as spring replacement. overall, i've put more then $3000.00 in repair not including the repair of the transmission i now need. i loved my windstar but i am now discovering that it puts my life endanger to drive it. my two kids were in the car when this happened and i feared someone would hit my car. the worst part about all this is i am unable to get rid of this car as i still am buying this car. i am unable to refinance the difference. i was told to just scarp the car by the dealer and just get another car as i am even more in debt trying to repair the car. i don't want to ruin my credit so there has to be another solution. i have no inkling how i'm going to manage to get 3000.00 for a new car and pay my bills and find an alternative method. i really would appreciate it if ford would just do the right thing fix my transmission. split the cost. i did damage my car in the mist of all this and just want to be able to drive to work until the car is paid off.*jb

1999 ford windstar van:: cruise control stopped working. i remembered seeing a special on cnn-tv recently about ford f150 and explorer vehicles catching on fire. suspected cause was the cruise control cut-out switch located on the brake master cylinder. so i decided to see if there was anything i could see related to my problem. i found the cruise control switch that's mounted on the bottom front of the brake master cylinder soaked with brake fluid. apparently the switch's seal failed causing brake fluid to leak thru the switch into the power connector and run down the wiring. this failure could have caught my vehicle on fire because a liquid across a 12 volt power connector to ground is a high resistance short translating into heat = fire. i took some pictures with a digital camera and can e-mail them if you're interested. in the mean time i disconnected the power connector at the cruise control cut-out switch for safety. i can't find any recall for this problem on a 1999 ford winstar ? i have a 1999 ford f150 truck also and it has the cruise control cut-out switch mounted on the end of the brake master cylinder except it's on the top. i also disconnected it to be safe. i called ford and a new switch costs about $15.00 but none are available. someone needs to kick the rock off ford being in total denial of the problem. it's quite easy to see what the problem is and they keep saying they don't know what's causing it ??? if i can get a new switch i can also send the defective one to someone to evaluate. this is basic electronics and not a mystery. thanks,
