Subframe gave out, engine dropped and car was towed to my home.i had just exited a highway going 55mph. i was driving the to car to attend a work related event early evening. i drove past the entrance and proceeded to turn around on the road. as i approached the intersection the van lost power. i stopped being able to steer and brake. i turned hard on the steering wheel to move off the road. i was able to pull into a turn lane and fortunately there was very limited traffic on the road. the car came to a full stop on its own and there was a loud scrapping noise coming from under the front of the car. i was towed to my home. the tow driver stated the subframe had given away and was dragging on the ground. it required a flat bed truck to tow. my mechanic confirmed the subframe had collapsed . the cost to fix was prohibited and i was concerned about the safety of the vehicle i contacted ford about the problem and they responded that there was no recall at that time. the car remained in the driveway in the event there was a recall on the vehicle for over one year. i finally decided to donate the car having not been contacted by the manufacturer. i was contacted that there was a recall identifying the problem in 2011 i am filing this complaint due to the fact that i was financially disadvantaged by the delays of the manufacturer to identify and notify me of the recall in a timely fashion. *tr

Bought the van in sept. 2002 with 55,000 miles, engine light came on within a week of having it. took it back to car lot where we bought it, they took it to the ford dealer, couldn't find anything except that it came up a lean code they told me i didn't know how to put gas cap on the right way. that is not the problem. kept dealing with light on to this day. may 2003 had to have the transmission replaced, got it back starting having same problems, took it back they said they forgot to replace a wire, still having problems to this day with transmission in fact oct. 2010 had to have it towed they said shavings found in motor will need transmission replaced again. dome lights flash all the time. the gauges go haywire all the time, peg from one side to the other. had that replaced and did it again. took it in for recall dec. 28,2010 cracked rear axle still at dealer. now just heard that the recall for sub frame will get papers in feb. guess it will be there longer. our dumb mistake we bought another windstar in sept. 2010 a 2003 all we could afford, that has problems with abs light. told over $800 to fix. we need two new cars, don't feel safe in either.

I was at a stop light at a major intersection and when the light turned green i heard a loud sound. i tried to accelerate but my car would not move forward. the engine just revved. i thought i ran something over due to the sound so inspected got out to inspect the car. i found nothing. i got back into the car and turned car off and turned back. the car would not drive. i put the car in reverse and managed to get off the road. i had the car towed to the dealership. i was told by the dealer sutton ford in matteson il. that the transmission just broke and would cost me $3000.00. i have had this car less then 2 years. i had an extended warranty that just expired a few months ago. my obd light was on but was told by the dealer it was a sensor. they could turn it off but it wasn't anything major. after reading all the complaints i'm sure it is major. since purchasing this car, i have had to replace tires at least every six months, major engine repair, alternator repair, as well as spring replacement. overall, i've put more then $3000.00 in repair not including the repair of the transmission i now need. i loved my windstar but i am now discovering that it puts my life endanger to drive it. my two kids were in the car when this happened and i feared someone would hit my car. the worst part about all this is i am unable to get rid of this car as i still am buying this car. i am unable to refinance the difference. i was told to just scarp the car by the dealer and just get another car as i am even more in debt trying to repair the car. i don't want to ruin my credit so there has to be another solution. i have no inkling how i'm going to manage to get 3000.00 for a new car and pay my bills and find an alternative method. i really would appreciate it if ford would just do the right thing fix my transmission. split the cost. i did damage my car in the mist of all this and just want to be able to drive to work until the car is paid off.*jb

When attempting to park, especially when parking between two vehicles and i need to proceed slowly and with caution, my engine has a sudden, momementary surge of approximately 500 rpm each time i turn the steering wheel. this causes the vehicle to suddenly lurch forward. i have had a few close calls due to this sudden movement when stopped for pedestrans to pass in front of me, i have turned the steering wheel slightly and when the vehicle surges forward, they look at me like i was attempting to run them down. as of this date, i do not know why it is doing this.

Heat failed in july, pin to flap in evaporator case assembly had broken off. whole assembly has to be replaced requiring tearing apart the dashboard. part alone cost $326.40 check engine light kept coming on - found pressure leak at gasket. had complained about engine sluggishness for years and was told the computer could find nothing wrong...after gasket was fixed, no more engine sluggishness. ford would not cover saying the problems could not be tied together to justify warranty repair!! power steering went. first attempted flushing system. after failed again, replaced pump, after that did not fix the problem, had to replace entire system. ford replied to my request for coverage that this was the first case they had heard of this problem in a windstar and to keep my receipts so that i might get consideration if they do something in the future. i feel these problems are excessive for a 50,000 mile car...ford agrees but says the average number of problems is much lower so they still class their car as very reliable!!!

The rear ac unit went out around 75k never got it fixed but when we had the car serviced the computer panel was reset and it worked again at 96k. the engine light came on and stayed and we never got it fixed. the gas gauge light came on and we had it fixed at 98k and i don't know the cost. the van was recalled because of the windshield wipers and the rear ac unit. there wasn't no cost.the details of the fire. my wife got out her car for work and about 20 minutes later the fire trucks were there. our adjuster said the fire initiated behind the passenger seat in the ac and heating control panel. the vehicle was totaled on 12 sept. the vehicle had 119k on it now. if there is anything else you like to ask me feel free to. i am really upset with ford on the way they handled this entire situation especially when they know there have been reported fires from recalls located on the web sites. i

We first had to replace the transmission at 49000 miles for $2000.00. just a few months later the engine failed at 53000 miles. to save money, we purchased a used engine from a wrecked windstar van for $900.00. my husband and father did the labor themselves. then in july 2003 we had to replace the shift solenoids which cost $500.00 for parts and labor. now, just a little over a year from replacing the first transmission, the van is in the shop again with transmission problems. any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciate. thanks for your time.

We have taken this van in for repair fivetimesin one year. the first month we had it the head was replaced. the power steering has gone out for now the fifth time. i actually lost controlof the vehicle due to beingunable to turn the steering. my husband has to drive me everywhere because only he can turn the steering wheel. each time we take it for repair we are charged a deductible and i can not do this anymore. this is obviously a lemon. marshall mize ford in chattanooga tennessee is where the vehicle was purchased in january of 2001. they also have performed all service on this vehicle. ford has not been understanding of why my payments have been late, but when you are having these kinds of issues such as electrical, transmission, air conditioning, and engine malfunctions, it does not take a genius to figure out why a woman with a family who depends on this vehicle as reliable, safe means of transportation is having difficulty. maybe if their product was of better quality, my children would be in a safe vehicle, and ford would get their money on time.

I am haveing lots of troubles with 1999 ford winstar since the day i bought from dealer (lew webb ford, garden grove). 1. currently my van has manifold leakage. this has occurred immediately after the ford dealer fixed my transmission leakage. the price quoted is $1200 out of which i have to pay $540. i have already spent lots of money in maint & repairs. before this i had to take my van to dealer for following problems: transmission leakage at 37000 miles. front & back brakes at 37000 miles. electrical system failure. couple of recalls. currently it has approximately 50600 miles on odometer and i have been communicating to & fro with dealer. for the current problem dealer has offered me 55% in assisstance. but my problem is i am wasting lots of time, money & energy to have all this problems fixed. i would prefer to hand this van back to dealer or atleast get more assisstance from dealer or ford company. please advise me of any furthur action i should take. my phone number is 714-832-2200 ext 34. thanks in advance for looking into this matter.

Check engine light came on. took van into shop to have checked. through diagnosis and contact with local ford dealer, determined that intake manifold gaskets were leaking, requiring a 700 plus dollar repair to correct the problem. have since found out that ford has been aware of this problem for quite some time, have issued numerous service bulletins related to this problem, and have a kit available to repair. believe that this is a manufacturing defect that ford has been fully aware of for a long time, and there should be a recall so the consumer is not burdened with repair costs for a problem that ford should have taken care of long ago. *cb

I bought a ford windstar van from a used car dealer by the name of ray price in dec. of '07. we had been looking for a van for some time and i had looked for any recalls before we purchased. i found none listed. we paid off the car last month, and that's when the trouble started. i have taken it to the garage 3 times in the last month because it kept stalling when it would idle for longer periods of time. the mechanic fixed the intake manifold seals and the surrounding parts, replacing them as needed each time. i also had the spark plugs and plug wires replaced just in case. on thursday july 23rd, my husband replaced the brakes on the front. he drove the van all day with no problems other than the occasional stall. we stopped for milk at the grocery store on our way home from my work and had been inside for only 5-10 minutes when the manager called out that our car was on fire. we ran outside, and the firemen got it out, but the car is a total loss. i spoke to my mechanic and the fire investigator and both told me that they had come across a recall that had been out a few years ago about my van. it seems that ford recalled the cruise control mechanism in the engine because it caused electrical fires just like what happened to mine. the fire chief said it looked exactly like what he had seen before when it happened. since then, ford has denied that there was a recall and won't look into the matter. my car had been on this lot for at least a year before we bought it. if the recall went out, it was never fixed, and a lawyer has already said it is ford's responsibility to take care of the matter. can you check on this for me? *tr

We were involved in an accident yesterday due to our 1999 ford windstar not operating properly. we had 7 people in our van including small children. luckily, none of us were injured, but the potential for injury was definitely there. as we were approaching a stop light at about 35 mph the abs brake light and battery light came on and we lost all power. we had no brakes or power steering. it was evident we were not going to be able to stop so my husband opted for the ditch. steering was very difficult and we hit a stop light on the right hand side of the road with the left front end of the van and eventually came to a stop about 4 ft. from a utility pole. the van was driving fine with no indication of malfunction prior to losing all power suddenly. we have in the past experienced the battery light or the abs brake light coming on when it was raining or after driving through standing water but have not experienced losing all power until yesterday. we have also had problems with the engine cutting out after driving on the highway for awhile and then driving on city streets at lower speeds. it seems that when your driving on just city streets at lower speeds we don't experience this problem, and also not typically while we are on the highway driving at higher speeds (although we have had it cut out a couple times on the highway). it seems to usually occur after we have been on the highway driving at higher speeds for awhile and then exit on to lower speed roads. the engine just suddenly dies. we can typically start it right back up again, but it will continue to die and start back up several times. *jb

3 deaths. bet i've got your attention now! i have been reading about the check engine light failures, and my van has the same persistent problem. i understand there is an engine design defect and that although gasket replacement is recommended by the technical service bulletin, it seems customers who have paid to get the tsb fix still have the same problem. i personally have spent over $5000 in the last two years trying to get the issue resolved. at 103k, my van's blue book value is much less. this is not even to mention what i've spent on extra gas at today's high prices due to inefficient engine operation resulting from this design defect. the stalling of the engine which is being reported by a lot of consumers is also due to the long term effects of running the van with this same design defect. it is just a matter of time until someone does die because of this defect, especially with the engines cutting off on the highway. ford should recall the vehicle for this problem and fix it at no cost to consumers. there are enough individuals on this website alone to organize into a class action lawsuit, and i am just the one to take the lead on it. of course, i do not plan to keep this vehicle. i have also had a persistent problem with the engine compartment getting too hot and burning up my alternator. i purchased this van in 2000 and have already replaced the alternator six times (averaging once per year). this is the first ford vehicle i have ever owned and i am less than impressed. i will not buy another ford product again. i have owned dodge caravans and chevrolet vehicles which were designed properly and gave me no where near this amount of problems. i am going to purchase a dodge caravan. *nm

There are several problems with out now three year old windstar that have either been corrected temporarily or not corrected at all. the most persistent issues are with the drivetrain in particular the transmission which shifts erratically when going around corner or climbing hills at low spead. the recall was performed at 25k but the transmission continues to operate poorly. ford has offered no solution or warranty extension for these problems. the engine problems to date revolve around the innability to use regular or mid grade fuels as advertised on the vehicles sticker, we have been offered a valve cover replacement for $500 but in speaking with other windstar owners this only fixes the problem temporarily. also it seems to me this is a defect that ford should fix not the owner. the other persistent problem is with the direver side power door, in hot temperatures the door does not close completely and pops open when driveing. the dealer has repaired this several times and while better that in was it continues to be an intermittent problem. we are frustrated with the probelms this vehicle has experienced including the replacement of the entire power steering system, rack, pump and hoses and more frustrating is fords unwillingness to stand behind the vehicle and its fault. our overwhelming concern is that the transmission and engine will both fail before we have received any usefull value for our money. ford needs to be held accountable for the products they develop, i hope you will be able to enforce some type of coverage or warrantee protection for the consumer.*ak

This recurring problem continues to fail within one to two weeks after the dealership has replaced a needed part. each time i get my vehicle back it works for the aforementioned time and the problem comes up again. they replace parts one by one and each time another part on the system fails .another issue i believe to be associated with the series of this entire vaccum system is when i am driving at speeds of 30 -35 mph, there is considerable noise coming from the engine which sounds like lifter rattle . it happens when i need to acclerate to get onto the highway also. i notice when the vehicle has been serviced for the check engine light (which requires that a part or parts be replaced for the vaccum system), the noise will stop and won't be noticeable for several days and eventually the light will come on again.this issue of the lifter noise has never been addressed by the dealership i am told that they cannnot duplicate the problem, and they have no answer or solution. this problem also causes the comsumption of gas to increase dramatically. the van will use one eighth tank of gas on a normal day of driving when , if the light is on, the vehicle is not working properly i will use about one quarter tank of gas. the consumption is doubled.

I have been experiencing engine knock since i purchased the vehicle in june 1999. the first documented service at a ford dealer was in september 1999 at 5,000 miles. the engine knock was apparent at highway acceleration speeds and on slight hills. it became worse over time. after my continued persistence at the dealer over more than a year, a tsb was found and the valve cover was replaced in the july-august 2001 timeframe per a ford tsb (nhtsa number sb618552). this did not remedy the problem and the technician at the dealer told me in september 2001 that he still found an abnormal amount of oil in the engine. ford engineers have suggested replacing the pcv valve and tubing system among other minor adjustments, which the technician doubts will make any difference. at this point, it appears that the valve cover redesign in the tsb does not remedy the problem. this complaint is identical to odi ids: 744509 and 725795.*ak

This ford windstar lx has experienced the engine just suddenly quitting while driving on the roadways. the first incident happened the day i purchased the vehicle, whereby i drove it home and even test drove it without incident. however, when i got home my daughter wanted to take it for a spin and got approximately two houses down the street we live on and the engine suddently quit. i attempted to simply drive it around the block to get back home and it quit running two more times. i took it back to the dealer and he called ford and what was done i do not know but one day later i was told it was ready and picked it up. we drove it from the 26th of june until the 29th of june. on the 29th my wife was travelling 40mph down a busy street when the engine suddenly quit again. the dash lights always came on and this time the check engine light came on and stayed on. when the engine quits you steere without power sterrin nor power brakes. my wife is 5'1 and 120 lbs and this was very difficult and scarry. i fear if she had been on an interstate and had this occur! subsequently, i took it back to the dealer on the 2nd of july and todate they fixed the check engine light problem, but this was not the problem with the engine suddenly quitting. the mini-van has quit running twice more while at the ford dealer and they do not have a clue as to what the problem is. from the 2nd of july to today 7-13-01 i have no cause nor solution to this safety hazard. i would appreciate any information or if this has been previously reported with this particular mini-van, or if i indeed just have a lemon. i have researched the van and it comes out with a clean bill of health each time. i feel this needs to be reported for the possible accident potential and possible loss of life due to the engine just suddenly quitting to run. i will update your office as to any changes in status and/or resolution of this vehicle problem. thank you for time and energy in this matter.*ak

Mileage was 49600, total cost for the repair was $2600.00 but our cost was only $2072.00 because drew ford in san diego, ca helped us cover some of the cost. the itemized bill said the remanufactured transmission was $1702.28. the tranny went out with no warning lights and no sign of giving out. my wife usually drives it but i had just driven it the day before and i am in tune with odd noises and the van had none. 8/22/2003 in the evening when she pulled into our garage and was still moving forward, it stopped. it didn't move until the engine was rev'd pretty high then it would kick in violently. that lasted about 2 or 3 times while trying to finish moving it into the garage when a huge grinding sound took place and the van did not move again until the tow truck took it away! i am outraged that the van was so young when a major component went out like the transmission. and after combing the web for others who have experienced this, i found plenty of people. i think ford motor company should pay for this. i figure they won't, though.

Re: sliding doors- will not open reliably since new- trouble intermittent-dealer lakeland ford replaced door switches when i was finally able to demonstrate intermittent condition(not easy)dealer contacted ford who told them that the doors were designed to operate that way to conserve battery!(believe it) ford design engineer said the power to the outside door handles was cut off after 30 minutes of no use to conserve the battery, further, that they had received no other complaints.. this is simply not so. the van can sit for 24 hours and the doors will open , most of the time. re horn button: most people use the palm or heel of the hand to operate the horn. i have had three close calls because i have been unable to sound the horn to alert other drivers. it can only be operated by using the thumb or index finger directly over the horn symbol. this constitutes an area of slightly more than one square inch. re emission control:according to the service manager this noise is caused by one of the emission controls under the hood. it causes a whirring sound when the vehicle is in gear and makes a squack like a duck when the engine is turned off. service manager said they couldn't do anything about it. had identical trouble in '96 windstar, turned out to be computer and transmission related.*ak

The check engine light has been on for over a year, very shortly after my last fuel emissions test in 2002. despite numerous checks by my mechanic, which detects no fuel emissions problems, the indicator light stays on. after each inspection by my mechanic, the light turns off temporarily, (1 or so weeks), and then relights. we have thus failed the md state emissions test (without being tested by them) due to this chronic light problem. my brother-in-law has the same exact problem with his ford windstar minivan, and so does another person (not verified myself). the read windshield wiper motor has been recalled. we had it repaired by a ford repair shop, and it has broken again.*ak

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 ford windstar. the contact took her vehicle to the dealer because it would start, but then idle, stutter, and stall. the failure also occurred while the vehicle was at a stop sign or traffic light. the vehicle would restart immediately after the failure. the oxygen sensors and all the hoses were replaced, including other repairs. the total repair cost was approximately $1,700. the engine light would also illuminate, but no error code displayed when a diagnostic was performed. the contact then took the vehicle to a family mechanic and was informed of a failure with the valves and intake manifold, of which ford was aware. the failure would deter oil from flowing through the valves. the purchase date was unknown. the current mileage was 61,000 and failure mileage was approximately 30,000.
