The subject vehicles are equipped with single or dual power sliding doors (psd).approximately 111,000 vehicles have dual power sliding doors.the psd is opened by any of 5 methods, the inside or outside manual door handle, the key fob, the overhead console switch and the b-pillar switch.the door may be opened only under these conditions: ignition key is in off/accessories/on/start position, gear selector in park, vehicle speed less than 6 mph, and door unlocked.the psd latch is located at the rear of the door and has a secondary and primary latch position.full and proper closure engages both the secondary and primary latch.with the ignition in the on position, as the gear selector is moved out of park the door automatically locks and that action mechanically isolates the latch, secondary and primary, from all latch release connections.in addition to the reports alleging door opening while driving, ford has received approximately 5,700 reports that allege the door does not close properly or pops open with no mention of while driving.ford's investigation into these report included owner interviews, vehicle by-backs and testing of consumer vehicles.it found that allegations of door opening while driving were in fact reports of doors not being properly closed initially and subsequently opening to the secondary latch position as a result of vehicle vibrations or driving maneuvers.ford's testing of consumer vehicles did not result in any recurrence of psd opening while being driven.odi interviews with owners affirmed the allegations of psd opening while driving; however owners indicated the event is not a regular occurrence (i.e.,it occurred only once or has not occurred recently) and that the unintended psd opening may not be able to be duplicated.in contrast, the improper closing of the psd (latching on the secondary but not the primary latch) can be duplicated, and odi verified this during an inspection of a consumer vehicle.in this condition (secondary but no primary latch), when the vehicle's gear selector is moved out of park position, a warning chime sounds and warning message appears on the instrument panel.most reports and warranty claims were filed in the early service-life of the vehicle and peaked around the 18-month in-service time period.odi and mfr complaint trends are declining over the last 8 quarters.there is no alleged injury associated with occupant falling out while the vehicle is in motion.no failure mode causing full door opening while vehicle is in motion has been verified (reproduced by odi or by trained service technicians at dealerships) during this investigation.a safety-related defect has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist.the agency will monitor this issue and reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.

In a january 26, 2011 defect information report, ford motor company (ford) notified the national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa) that it will conduct a safety recall to address corrosion related fractures in the front lower control arm rear attaching brackets and body mount attachments at the rear of the front subframe in approximately 425,288 model year (my) 1999 through 2003 ford windstar vehicles manufactured from april 1998 to july 2003 and either sold or currently registered in the following high corrosion (salt-belt) states:connecticut, delaware, district of columbia, illinois, indiana, iowa, kentucky, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, utah, vermont, west virginia and wisconsin (nhtsa recall no. 11v-030, ford recall no. 11s16).according to ford, separation of a front lower control arm rear attaching bracket may result in a lower control arm separation and separations of both front subframe rear body mounts may result in separation of the steering intermediate shaft.either condition could result in diminished vehicle directional control, increasing the risk of a crash.dealers will inspect the lower control arm rear attachment flanges and the rear body mount sections of the subframe on the right (passenger) and left (driver) sides of the vehicle.owners of vehicles that pass the inspection will be notified when to return for installation of reinforcement brackets to extend the durability of the front subframe assembly in affected areas in the presence of corrosion.owners of vehicles that do not pass inspection, but can be repaired, will be offered transportation until parts become available.repurchase offers will be extended to owners of vehicles that cannot be repaired with the reinforcement brackets.this investigation is closed.
PE10026FORD MOTOR COMPANY07/20/201012/20/2010Front Subframe Corrosion Failures
The office of defects investigation (odi) has identified 346 complaints to odi and ford alleging fracture, cracking and or excessive corrosion of the front subframes in model year (my) 1999 through 2003 ford windstar vehicles.approximately 97 percent of these complaints (334) involve vehicles that have been operated in salt belt states, which make up approximately 60 percent of the subject vehicle sales in the united states.the front subframe, sometimes referred to as the engine cradle, is a structural component of the windstar vehicles that carries the engine, transaxle, steering rack and certain front suspension components (e.g., lower control arm).for complaints with sufficient information to identify the location of the failure, most describe problems with the rear mounting bracket for the front passenger-side lower control arm with some related to the rear body mount attachment located in the same general area of the subframe (right-rear section near the front passenger wheel).the remainder of the reports allege fracture of the front subframe at other or, most often, unspecified locations.almost all of the complaints that specified the side of the vehicle indicated that the problem occurred on the right/passenger side (106), with only a few indicating the left/driver side (2) or both sides (3) were affected.ford and several complainants attributed the right-side failures to the routing of the air-conditioning lines above the front subframe on that side of the vehicle, further noting that condensation has been observed dripping onto the front subframe in the area of the affected components (the a/c drain tube is also located on the right side, near the front subframe).odi has identified 93 complaints related to lower control arm attachments, including 80 that appear to involve complete separations.all but one of these involved vehicles from salt belt states.all three crash incidents appear to be related to lower control arm separations, including one road departure into a road-side sign resulting in a totalled vehicle and a lane departure into another vehicle.almost half of the odi complaints related to control arm separation occurred at speeds greater than 20 mph and about a quarter occurred at highway speeds.three-quarters of these complaints allege experiencing difficulty controlling the vehicle and about 40 percent appear to have resulted in departures from the intended lane of travel.testing by both ford and nhtsa have demonstrated that lower control arm separation from the rear attachment bracket results in significant toe out of the affected wheel, which affects the driver's ability to control vehicle direction.according to ford, moderate braking improved vehicle controllability by reducing the amount of toe out, possibly explaining incidents that did not allege a loss of control.odi's analysis of complaints related to the rear body mount identified 41 complaints (odi only).these complaints generally report experiencing progressively worsening noise concerns when turning, accelerating or braking.although, some of the complaints that appeared to involve a complete separation of the body mount alleged difficulty steering, the effects on vehicle control from this failure mode do not appear to be as great as those resulting from control arm separation.however, odi is seeking more information regarding two complaints which alleged that body mount failure resulted in disconnection of the steering wheel from the steering rack (one occurred during vehicle service).this investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea10-007) for subject vehicles sold or currently registered in salt belt states to further assess the scope, frequency and safety consequences of the alleged defect in these vehicles.odi will continue to gather information about vehicles outside the salt belt as well.

Tl. steering problem 1999 ford windstar comments: dear nhtsa, i have a vechicle safty concern probable loss of steering control on ford windstars 1999-200? below is a responce i recieved from ford, concerning the probelm at the bottom is the detailed concern with a motor mount support plate that is rusting out on theses vechicle. the motor and front end suspension and steering is involved. this is a time bomb, the engine will drop down and you will loose steering control, most likly causing afatal accident. the repair cost in most cases will be an amount more than the value of the vechicle rust is an acceptable probability, but it should not occur in areas concerning steering. contact wanted to use the complaint he sent in as a email. jo

Our 99 ford windstar that we purchased, broke its rear bar yesterday. however, we purchased it used from luther family ford in north dakota, they told us that our windstar had spent most of its life up north in ohio, minnesota etc. i looked at the ford winstars under body yesterday and you can easily tell that it has been corroded all along the underbody from the salt. where the rear bar broke you can see rust and salt corrosion very easily, not to mention that the spare tire is completely rusted over from the salt. my wife and i have taken very good care of our vehicle, and have never driven anywhere it is not supposed to and yesterday she pulled out a parking spot and she heard a thud, and then a scapping sound. she called me and i came out and looked at it. i noticed that all across the rear bar area there is a large quantity of rust and where it broke you can see a build up of rust from salt. mainly due to it spending most of its life up north. we did speak to ford, and they mentioned that our rear bar snapped in two, and it was from rust and salt that weakened it to the point of breaking. they however state its not on the list so they will not do anything. we even double checked with luther family ford, and they told us ours was manufactured in one of the plants that did have problems. so even though ford states that it is not one of the vehicles with the problem, i believe there may be a larger underlying amount that they would rather not have to deal with. we had our vehicle towed to our house where are waiting to hear more about this recall to see if any other ones are among them.

Recent news reports have lead me to believe that i am not alone with the following problem: the rear axel of my 1999 ford windstar broke in half while i was driving onto i-93, north of boston, on december 5, 2009. fortunately the vehicle skidded to a stop on the on ramp just before merging with fast moving traffic. the windstar was towed to a garage, then donated to charity on december 7, 2009. two people were in the van, however, there were no injuries as a result of the structural failure.

Subframe gave out, engine dropped and car was towed to my home.i had just exited a highway going 55mph. i was driving the to car to attend a work related event early evening. i drove past the entrance and proceeded to turn around on the road. as i approached the intersection the van lost power. i stopped being able to steer and brake. i turned hard on the steering wheel to move off the road. i was able to pull into a turn lane and fortunately there was very limited traffic on the road. the car came to a full stop on its own and there was a loud scrapping noise coming from under the front of the car. i was towed to my home. the tow driver stated the subframe had given away and was dragging on the ground. it required a flat bed truck to tow. my mechanic confirmed the subframe had collapsed . the cost to fix was prohibited and i was concerned about the safety of the vehicle i contacted ford about the problem and they responded that there was no recall at that time. the car remained in the driveway in the event there was a recall on the vehicle for over one year. i finally decided to donate the car having not been contacted by the manufacturer. i was contacted that there was a recall identifying the problem in 2011 i am filing this complaint due to the fact that i was financially disadvantaged by the delays of the manufacturer to identify and notify me of the recall in a timely fashion. *tr

The van has had both the front subframe and rear axel recall repairs completed. on picking up the van, it still had a hard pull to the right after paying for an alignment. the dealer attributed it to the tires. on putting the van in for pa inspection, it did not pass due to subframe rotted at rear transmission mount. the ford dealer that performed the recall work subsequently looked at it, agreed the frame was rotted but that no recalls coverd it. the repair cost is in excess of the vehical value. i suspect the alignment could be related as well.

 1. sub-frame was badly rusted out. it broke while backing out of a parking space and the front tires disengaged. 2. the rocker panel on the left side needs to be replaced. it is badly rusted out and it will not pass inspection anymore. there is some rust on the right rocker panel also. all of the rust in under the vehicle and it is not safe to drive. 3. the check engine light came on last year.

The sub-frame of my 1999 ford windstar has rusted away at critical spots around and near the mounting bolts and as a result failed to pass pa state annual inspection on dec. 12, 2010. i was told by the mechanic (a non-ford mechanic) that the condition was very unsafe and that there was no way it would pass pa state inspection unless this dangerous condition was fixed. to pass it would had to have the entire sub-frame replaced which was going to be expensive or else the vehicle would have to be scraped (the vehicle currently has about 189,000 miles). the mechanic's finding was very surprising to me because on oct. 30, 2010, the same windstar was inspected by a local ford dealer based on a rear axle corrosion recall notice from ford. following the recall inspection (by a different mechanic) i was informed that everything was okay and no work was necessary per to the recall notice. in hindsight it would appear that nothing else but the rear axle was inspected and i was thus sent back on the road operating a very unsafe vehicle due to corrosion issues. thank goodness the pa state inspection mechanic noticed the sub-frame danger some 6 weeks later before a potentially deadly accident occurred. i'm writing to highlight this serious safety problem with windstar models made between 1999-2003 for the nhtsa. i understand that many others have complained of similar sub-frame corrosion problems on their windstars but, to date, ford has not issued a recall even though they did for similar rear axle corrosion problems. since the problems both stem from corrosion issues it seems logical that ford should also be responsible for correcting this safety issue. except for the sub-frame corrosion problem, my windstar is running well and i'd like to keep driving it for several more years. i am hopeful that ford will quickly take responsibility for fixing these serious safety problems.

This complaint is regarding front subframe corrosion. both passenger and driver side corrosion is so severe that you can stick your finger through the frame. this was discovered when a wheel alignment was being performed following the purchase of new front tires. it was confirmed by the local bill mccoy ford dealership. they were unaware of the pending nhsta inquire but did confirm pre-mature rear axle corrosion per present recall. please contact me if further information is required.

I purchased a 1999 ford windstar a few months ago. i have had nothing but problems with it. in fact, i have spent more than half of what i paid for the vehicle in repairs in only 2 months. the reason for my complaint is that the most recent repairs have involved items that i feel are extreme safety concerns. 1- the power doors on my vehicle to not lock/unlock properly, making it unable to open the sliding doors. this was looked at by the ford mechanic today. i was told that the door latches were bad and were burning up the door lock actuators. i'm not sure if this is the reason, but also lately, my door ajar light comes on my dash and the interior lights are coming on intermittently while driving. i have 3 children, two of them in car seats and unable to get them selves out of a car. i am concerned that if something were to happen such as an accident or an emergency situation that i would not be able to get my children out of the vehicle. i am paying to have this repaired at the tune of around $1,000.00 which i think is a real rip off, due to fords poorly manufactured vehicle. 2. my brake light stopped working on the left side of my van. i changed the bulb and tested it, and did not fix the problem. i then noticed that my rear tail light is now not working. i had this checked out by the mechanic today, and was told it is the rear electronic control module which is going to cost me nearly $600 to fix. i'm not sure what would cause such a thing to fail, but this is definitely a safety concern, where lights come into play. i could have been rear ended due to this malfunction. i'm beginning to wonder if ford is in the auto making/selling business, or the service business. it appears to me that they are poorly manufacturing vehicles only providing job security for the mechanics. please investigate this situation. any help in remedying this and getting ford to pay for their mistakes would be greatly appreciated. *jb

There are several problems with out now three year old windstar that have either been corrected temporarily or not corrected at all. the most persistent issues are with the drivetrain in particular the transmission which shifts erratically when going around corner or climbing hills at low spead. the recall was performed at 25k but the transmission continues to operate poorly. ford has offered no solution or warranty extension for these problems. the engine problems to date revolve around the innability to use regular or mid grade fuels as advertised on the vehicles sticker, we have been offered a valve cover replacement for $500 but in speaking with other windstar owners this only fixes the problem temporarily. also it seems to me this is a defect that ford should fix not the owner. the other persistent problem is with the direver side power door, in hot temperatures the door does not close completely and pops open when driveing. the dealer has repaired this several times and while better that in was it continues to be an intermittent problem. we are frustrated with the probelms this vehicle has experienced including the replacement of the entire power steering system, rack, pump and hoses and more frustrating is fords unwillingness to stand behind the vehicle and its fault. our overwhelming concern is that the transmission and engine will both fail before we have received any usefull value for our money. ford needs to be held accountable for the products they develop, i hope you will be able to enforce some type of coverage or warrantee protection for the consumer.*ak

Less than two months after purchasing our van we had to jump start it and lost the cable on the power sliding door. since then the car's engine was worked on but still stalls out sometimes.the transmission still jerks in park.(they couldn't find a problem.) for the power sliding door, after a new cable, numerous adjustings, alighnments and two control modules put in. it still works eraticley and the dealership refuses to see a problem. the door will not open, when it finally opens it will not shut. when it is closed it does not latch and the interior and door ajar lights stay on. it constantley makes a racket and popping noise. on occasion the door opens while driving. i have three small children and this is a saftey hazard!! working with a ford rep he states there is nothing they can do but to bring it in again for repairs. but they really can't see a problem. he did state that they would give me 1,500 rebate towards another van or trade in. i told him i wanted this unsafe vehicle mashed no further owners. he said that would not happen. after looking at your report on 1999 and 2000 windstars and the same repeated problems with engines and sliding doors.then comparing to other makes of mini vans and there few problems. i would not want to own another ford!! i will be submitting this problem to the dispute settlement board. i'ts to bad ford does not stand behind there products.*ak

Re: sliding doors- will not open reliably since new- trouble intermittent-dealer lakeland ford replaced door switches when i was finally able to demonstrate intermittent condition(not easy)dealer contacted ford who told them that the doors were designed to operate that way to conserve battery!(believe it) ford design engineer said the power to the outside door handles was cut off after 30 minutes of no use to conserve the battery, further, that they had received no other complaints.. this is simply not so. the van can sit for 24 hours and the doors will open , most of the time. re horn button: most people use the palm or heel of the hand to operate the horn. i have had three close calls because i have been unable to sound the horn to alert other drivers. it can only be operated by using the thumb or index finger directly over the horn symbol. this constitutes an area of slightly more than one square inch. re emission control:according to the service manager this noise is caused by one of the emission controls under the hood. it causes a whirring sound when the vehicle is in gear and makes a squack like a duck when the engine is turned off. service manager said they couldn't do anything about it. had identical trouble in '96 windstar, turned out to be computer and transmission related.*ak

I bought a 1999 ford windstar in delaware ohio at byers ford and on the first day i got it when i would put on the breaks the van would shake so bad. after a few months the abs light would come on then go off. i was told by a mechanic that is was just a sensor. i received the first recall of the rear axles back in october of 2010 and had them checked and they put some spray on them. i then got the second recall for the front subframe in feb of 2011 and when i set up my apt it was not till may 25th 2011 that i got in. for 3 months i dealt with the emergency break light being on, the abs light being on a clicking noise under my steering wheel and on top of that i have been driving my family around in it. the van shakes so bad that you can actually make a milkshake when you stop. sometimes i would have to press hard on the breaks to get it to stop. i told this to the man at byers ford in delaware, oh and he told me it was my rotars when i brought it in for the recalls. i was told that they have the parts to fix the recall orders and it would be ready by the next morning. 4 hours later i get a call that my van did not even come close to passing inspection. my subframe is actually broke and that it looked like it has been that whay for sometime. why was this not noticed before selling the van. arent they supposed to throughly inspect the vehical before putting it out on the lot?

My 1999 ford windstar se has been recalled for the the following recalls 09s09 speed control system modification, 10s13 rear axle inspection and repair, and 11s16 subframe front lower control arm rear attaching flanges & rear body mount attachments inspection and repair. i didn't recieve notice of any of these recalls, and found out from a friend about them. several months ago the front passenger side of my van started making a sound while driving. i was told by the mechanic that looked at it that it was due to rusting of the rear body mount attachment of the subframe. i took my van in to a ford dealer today 5/21/2011 for the recall inspections. i was told it passed all inspections, but was only in the service dept. for about 10 minutes. there is also severe rust on other areas of my front subframe that are not included in ford's recalls. i do not feel my vehicle was properly inspected.

My son-in-law and daughter we driving on hwy 421 at 50 mph. the van started shaking and they smelled rubber and heard grinding. he pulled over and the back tires were pushed in and the right back tire lost its lug nuts and tire was falling off. they removed the children from the car. it scared them to death! my son-in-law started walking to a gas station. my daughter looked under the van and saw the axle was snapped in half. a nice tow truck man stopped to help. he said, this van is on recall do you know what an axel is..she said yes....he looked under there and told her it was for sure snapped in half! i can't believe the ford windstar is doing this! it is very upsetting. it was towed to hersh ford in michigan city, indiana and were given a rental and told it could take over 4 months. how am i going to fit a family of 6 into a ford focus??

I took my van in for recalls. they supposedly fixed the axle however i think they just put stuff on it and didn't even check it. then they found some other stuff they wanted to fix like the tie rod links. i didn't let them fix it but i took it to someone else and they found a serious crack and corrosion on my front frame. it is about to break!! they didn't tell me about this. almost everything under my van has corrosion and if the axle is faulty because of that why isn't the other stuff under recall. is ford waiting for me or someone else get killed and then take care of it or is my life not important to them?

Driving through residential area and went to make a turn onto another street and steering went out and i went up the curb through on coming traffic lane. when inspected under vehicle the front passenger side subframe was corroded, rusted and broken off. i had to purchase a used intact front subframe from a junkyard as the dealership told me a new one was $2000.00. i had the used subframe put on and it is okay now. but the entire purchase of a new subframe would have been more than my vehicles value.

I took the winstar to have the two recalls repaired and when the basil ford service department was done with that they informed me that my van was undriveable because the right front sub frame was cracked. they said it would cost $1600. to repair it. with all the rust on the doors and door sill i find it rediculous to spend that amount when the rust would bring down the value of the van to almost nothing. this is the fifth ford i have had and you would think i would have learned about the rust factor. getting back to the sub frame i phoned the number listed on the ford web page but after about five phone calls i decided to call the corporate office. i was directed to a voice mail...gave my information and was told we would hear from them in so many business days. it didn't happen. then we recieved a form to fill out about how well we thought our phone inquiry went. we had a letter about the axel recall and this web site is listed so i thought it was time.

The right lower control arm pulled loose from the subframe crossmember due to excessive rust. the leadup to the inceident was completely unexpected. the control arm pulled loose at 70 mph and caused the windstar to veer back and forth using 4 lanes of traffic to come to a stop. lucky for me was that there was no traffic in my imediate area and no other cars were involved.

Fleet owned 1999 ford windstar. vehicle has been located in the chicago area since new. complaint was that the exhaust was loud and looked to be hanging low. the exhaust flange on the flex-pipe section rusted thin and broke off from the y-pipe. i then noticed that the passenger side rear of the subframe was completely rusted out and the subframe was hanging down about 1.5 from where it is supposed to be. the exhaust y-pipe flange is much lower than it should normally be, which tells me that the engine/trans assembly is leaning towards the rear of the vehicle. the drivers side rear mount of the subframe is cracked where it meets the body. also noted that on the passenger side subframe where the engine mount attaches and the subframe rear crossmember meet, the subframe is almost completely rusted through. i can foresee this problem eventually causing the axles to remove themselves from the trans, wire harnesses getting damaged, lower control arms becoming detatched from the subframe, exhaust damage, steering rack damage, wheel alignment issues, etc. the only repair that i can see making this vehicle safe to drive again would be subframe replacement.

My suspension broke on my 1999 ford windstar leaving me with no steering. i ran off the road and thankfully went into a field. very scary. this is a 1400. repair. i found out that this has caused accidents for others as well. i am just wondering why this part was never a recall? apparentley rear axles have been recalled due to similair circumstances. the ford company did tell me this may be a future recall but is not as of yet. i do not know if they are waiting for someone to die or what but this is a serious matter.

In august of 2010 i was driving my windstar when i heard a loud bang during a turn. i knew i had not hit anything and as i straightened out my wheel i noticed that it would not return to the normal position. i made an appointment with my local ford dealership to get it looked at. as soon as the man put the van up in the air he knew what was wrong. the subframe on the front passenger side was almost rusted through. the man took it down and told me never to drive the car agian in this shape. he said that he had never seen so much rust under a car that was still running. my windstar only has 86000 miles on it. i don't understand how something like that can happen to a car that has such low miles, i thought it should hold up better.

Tl- the contact owns a 1999 ford windstar. while the vehicle was undergoing state inspection the mechanic noticed the vehicles sub frame was severally rusted and the vehicle should have not been on the road. the vehicle was at the dealer recently for recall repairs (nhtsa campaign id number: 10v385000 component: suspension:rear:axle:non-powered axle assembly) and the contact questioned why he was not informed of the severe rusting of the sub frame. the dealer stated they would give the contact the cost for a new sub frame. the approximate failure mileage was 125,109.

At the end of november i notice a looseness in the steering of my 99 ford windstar. i was able to get it home and in the driveway. i looked at the front -end and noticed a rusted and cracked front frame on the passenger side. i had replaced the cracked axle my self it cost me $874.27 i have not received anything from ford on this yet. i can not drive the car because it is a not in good shape at all. it only has just under 90,000 miles. and has had a new intake put on which is plastic and now the engine runs very rough. also it has truble with the signal ligts. this car has turned out to be a lousy car.

Front sub-frame corrosion on passenger side near mount resulting in complete break. there is no evidence of rust anywhere else on the sub-frame, the frame or underbody. symptom was lound clanking from front-right and jerking sensation on some turns, acceleration. did not feel safe driving, so brought to ntb for examination (thinking it was a balljoint, etc.) technicians invited me to investigate under the lift as they were incredulous of such a severe break amidst an otherwise rust-free sub-frame

Hi i just saw that you were investigating winstar rust issues. two years ago, in 2008, our 1999 winstar starting making weird noises when i went over curbs or turned the wheel. i took it into the dealer and they said the front frame and axle had rusted. it was a couple thousand dollars to fix. they said it was no longer under warrenty. i did not wish to fix it (since it would cost as much to fix as the van was worth) and they said it was unsafe to drive and did not recommend i leave without fixing it. so we traded it in (explaining fully what was wrong with it) when we purchased a van from the honda dealership down the road. i just saw that you were investigating rust issues associated with winstars and thought i would pass this info along. thanks

1999 ford windstar lx front sub-frame rusted out on passenger side. this section of the sub-frame is always wet when the air-conditioner is turned on in the summer and the condensation from the air-conditioner leaks onto the subframe at this specific area, and in the winter salt is causing sub-frame to rust out and break at this specific area. this is a design flaw.

I own a 1999 ford windstar. approximately one month ago 15 nov,2010, i noticed that the alignment of the front tires was off. and the steering seemed loose and a little unresponsive. i immediately drove home and removed the passenger front tire and could not believe what i saw. the front sub-frame / engine cradle was completely corroded where the sub-frame attaches to the uni-body. the area where the mounting bushing that attaches the sub-frame to the uni-body on the passenger side was totally corroded / rusted / rotted away. the bushing was completely pushed through the sub-frame and had nothing to support it any more. i brought it to my local ford dealer with the print out of the current investigation of this issue. they told me it is not a recall yet and i would have to pay for the repair out of my own pocket

While driving my 1999 ford windstar i started to hear a grinding scrapping noise when making right turns the noise progressively started to get even worse i started to hear a loud clunking noise brought car to mechanic inspected and found that the sub frame was completed rusted out and the engine could drop at any time was advised not to drive vehicle ,luckily nothing happened when i was on the highway with my daughter driving at highway speeds. i contacted ford and they have told me there are no recalls on this particular situation, after checking online i have seen so many complaints i am now out a car and no money to buy new one, thank god my daughter was not hurt or anyone else i wish ford would realize this very dangerous situation and not wait for someone to get killed!!!

While pulling onto a busy road there was loud noise and the vehicle lost all control and skidded across the road and into a driveway. fortunately no property damage or personnal injury occured.the van was towed to my mechanic and he informed me that subframe on the right side had just broken off.clearly this must be some sort of a defecton the manufacturer.

1999 ford windstar lx broken sub-frame i began to hear a scraping noise while driving, especially on right turns. i had recently purchased 4 new tires from firestone, so took it back there thinking that something was wrong with the right front tire. instead i was told that the sub frame is busted (also called engine cradle), and that repair would be extensive in labor to the tune of at least $1500! ...and that would be for a replacement part from a junk yard (with same potential problem) rather than a new part. right now i cannot afford either one. i asked a welder about it, hoping to have it welded rather than replaced for much less money, but he says that would not be wise given the heavy load placed on the subframe. please consider a recall on this dangerous defect to prevent tragedy. thanks. firestone staff warned me not to drive vehicle, very unsafe. an online search reveals many similar complaints of busted subframes on ford windstars, yet no recalls for this dangerous problem as yet. are we waiting for someone to be killed? i just drove on the highway yesterday not knowing how serious this problem is.

Took car in for inspection and was told that the subframe was rotting away at the point where the sway bar connects to the cradle. and that it will cost over 800.00 to fix. this shorty after having the rear axle repaired due to a recall form ford. by the way ford did not say anything to me about the damage to the front where the rust was rotting away the cradle.

I have a 99 ford windstar with sub-frame rust. the vehicle was taken to a local ford dealer and put up on a lift and inspected after i noticed a noise and pulling to the right. the sub-frame has completely rusted away on the passengers side where it mounts to the vehicle. the vehicle itself has little to no rust underneath except to the subframe in two spots. the vehicle cannot be driven now and i was told the subframe would have to be replaced. due to the vehicle not being rusted underneath and not being driven in salted road conditions, i would have to conclude this is a manufacturer defect? the windstar is clean enough underneath to almost eat off. again there is little to no rust underneath except to the subframe. thank you for looking into this matter.

Took my 1999 ford windstar to have front tires replaced and mechanic noticed the front passenger side subframe mounting bolt is severely rusted. when i took the vehicle in to the dealership to have the recall work done for the rear axle, i told them about the rusting of the subframe mounting bolt and they said i would have to make another appointment and pay for this myself because there is no recall for this problem. my vehicle is not safe, i am scared to drive it, and i dont have the money to fix it!!!

1999 winstar van when changing the right front tire our mechanic saw the right front drive axle completely rusted out. this car is not safe to drive. nhsta defect investigation #pe 10016 is consistant with this problem.i want to be added to this investigation. there are no warning signs for this problem. we were lucky we have a good mechanic who spotted the problem. this car is at a ford dealership in missouri. . i wish someone would go and see this problem first hand. all other cars with this problem were not detected and were in a crash. this would be a great opportuniity to acually see the problem before the car is wrecked. this is a very dangerous situation for anyone who has a ford wnidstar van 1999 thrue 2003. there is no warning and when that front axle breaks there is no control of the vehicle.anyone who drives one of these vehicles should immediatly take to a mechanic for inspection. this is not like the rear axle problem, because you can at least steer the vehicle if it breaks. when the front goes you have no control.i am told the repair will cost $1200.00 dollars. ford motor company will not help with the cost of repair.

1999 ford windstar - subframe rusted out. had repairs done. had vehicle inspected by ford for current rear axle recall, was told there was no rust in the rear axle. i am having the car inspected by my mechanic because it would seem that if the front end rusted out, so would the back.

Our 1999 ford windstar was found to have serious rust on sub frame on passenger side during a massachusetts state vehicle inspection today. i understand this this make and model is subject ot a recall investigation and i want my complaint added to that investigation and request a recall notice be issued for this vehicle.

I had to replace my front subframe aka engine cradle and two motor mounts due to premature rust on my 1999 ford windstar this is the section of frame that hold up the engine and transmission along with most of the front suspension. i lost all ability to steer and was nearly in an accident braking to the side of the road and getting the minivan towed to a mechanic. i know this failure has generated a lot of complaints also within the nhtsa website and i feel it should be included in the current rusted rear axle recall warranty.

1999 ford windstar lx. engine cradle failure at mount point passenger rear. reference ntsha # pe10026. i am in the same situation. the passenger rear engine cradle mount has failed causing steering problems and loss of control. the passenger tie rod and control arm are now bent. at this point the vehicle is not safe, but i am forced to drive it. the vehicle is pulling severely to the left. this condition is worse on accelleration due to the bent steering components. the failure occurred while driving @ 50 mph causing difficulty steering.

Sub frame on my 1999 ford windstar is rotted, the engine is rocking, the steering is loose, when making right hand turns there is grinding from the frame rubbing, when driving there is a very loud banging from the engine rocking back and forth on the rotted frame. it has not been fixed, and the car is not drivable as it occurs all the time.

Nothing appeared wrong with my vehicle and then i heard a loud clunk and grinding in the middle of driving through rush hour traffic in the city, i felt very unsafe driving the vehicle as i could tell something was seriously wrong but slowly drove it home. i found out that the subframe is broken due to rusting.

The subframe on my 1999 ford windstar is severely corroded at most of the connection points.whenever we make a turn we could hear the rattling/grinding sound coming from beneath the vehicle. this problem has not been corrected at this point, but i am considering doing some reinforcements and hoping there wiill a recall very soon.

Abs brake light continuously goes off and on sporadically. but more importantly during my annual car inspection it was discovered that my subframe is dangerously rusted through and will cost 1,200 to replace it with a used one. i question how long a used one will last since it has been said that the a/c drainage hose is directly over it and most certainly the cause.. this definitely has recall written all over it. it is extremely dangerous if the engine falls or anything else and control of the vehicle is lost. the car being built with the a/c drainage over the sumbframe allowing such an inportant part of the car to rust is so neglectful and irresponsible. what is taking ford so long to recall this problem. i read a million similar incidents with the same year make and model i have.... 1999 ford windstar lx currently 90,500 miles

My boyfriend and i was on our way home with our 6 kids driving down route 280 nj on the night of sept. 23, 2010. after exiting the highway, about a block away from our house when we heard a loud popping noise and the steering became very poor and pulling to the right, i pulled the the car over and my boyfriend then got out and inspected the car. he jacked the car up just to find that the subframe on the passenger side was rusted and broken. the car had to be towed. the price to have it repaired was $1000 in parts and labor. i recently went online to find out that this has been happening to other 1999 - 2003 ford windstar owners as well.

The sub frame on our 1999 ford windstar broke at the right lower control arm. the break occurred just as my wife had left the highway and was fortunately traveling only about 20mph in a straight line. the vehicle would not steer and it could not be removed from the road, as the half shaft had pulled out of the transaxle. my wife left the vehicle with my two children to get assistance, and by the time the towing service that we called had arrived, the local police had the vehicle removed from the road due to its location. we then had it towed from the police impound to our garage. an estimate of $1200 was given by our shop but i felt that it was too much to spend on this repair. we towed the vehicle home and i replaced the k-frame myself, and had it alligned by our ford dealer. it was interesting to see that many of the frames in the salvage yard had a similar rusted condition in the same location. the frame i located had been replaced within the last year, still had fresh paint and part numbers on it. it was very fortunate that this failure occurred in a straight-line, decellerating scenario at slow speed and no one was hurt. it would not have been the case at higher speeds or with turns. it is also relevant to note that the vehicle had recently passed its annual safety inspection, at a ford dealership, and this frame weakness was not detected.

1999 ford windstar right passenger front sub frame rusted thru and broke apart causing steering wheel to be thrown off center and directional not to work. it was found when al of a sudden we herd an exhaust noise and looked under the front of vehicle. it has sepperated at least 1 1/2 and we were told by a ford master mech who looked at the van said it can not be driven as it could cause an accident with possible injuries or death.

I had my car in to a ford dealer in massachusetts for the recall of the rear axle. when they were done checking the rear the mechanic told us not to drive vehicle due to failure of the sub frame on the right front. the frame had rusted and broke around the bolt. luckily it didn't break while traveling on highway

The subframe on my 1999 ford windstar rusted out and had to be replaced in 20 09. whenever we made lefthand turns we would hear a grinding noise. i first brought the car in to be serviced in 2004. the service tech couldn't find anything wrong. i brought the car in to the dealer 3 more times between 2004 and 2009, each time a different diagnosis was made with resulting expense. the subframe was finally determined to be the problem. as i indicated it was replaced on1/2/2009 at a cost of $1014.75.

After recieving information about a recall for the rear axle on my 1999 ford windstar i decided to take a look at it. after looking under the entire vehicle i found that the front subframe is rusted through also, and is unsafe to drive as it will break off at any point in time. i think that ford abviously has corrosion issues with these vehicles, and something should be done about it. i will be towing my van to the dealer to have the rear axle inspected today. i hope something is done about the front subframe, because this could really hurt someone.

Went to ford for 1999 rear axle recall and found my entire subframe rotted at every connection to vechile more dangerous than rear axle do not know what held it to vechile had replaced at about $ 900.00 kept old parts found many windstars have same problem the salvage yards can not keep the good ones in stock but most are bad they should issue a recall i am told you are investigating already became hard to steer and breaks were kinda funny

I have a 1999 ford windstar, which has badly rusted k cradle, which can cause the engine to fall down while being driven as told by the mechanic. i tried to find an used one but couldn't get as they were all rusted out. looks like it has bad material or bad design. its a real safety hazard.

About 1 week ago my car started making popping noises around the front passenger's side wheel. a couple of days ago, i went to turn right after being stopped at a stop sign and the car made a loud popping noise. i was fortunate that the car was at a very low speed, so i was able to maintain control, but am positive that had i been going faster, i would have lost control and probably crashed. i had to turn the wheel and hold it at 90 degrees to keep the car on the road. upon inspection, i was told that the subframe had corroded completely through and that my engine could have fallen out at any time. i was also told how fortunate i was that i was alive and safe. after further investigation, i have experienced almost identical issues to many individuals who have written complaints in relation to investigation pe10026. the individual who inspected the vehicle also noticed that the air conditioner tubing to release excess condensation, was leaking directly over this area in question. they felt that the corrosion from road salt in addition to the air conditioner condensation caused the problem. i am unable and unwilling to drive my vehicle at this point due to safety concerns. i am hopeful that the nhtsa will deem this a necessary recall and prevent future injuries from occuring. for the record, i live in indiana, a salt-belt state.

Front sub-frame or engine cradle 1999 ford windstar. noticed loud scraping noise when turning to the right. vehicle inspected and found one of the front sub-frame mounts rusted through and almost separated from round rubber. (right side, back) all other 3 mounts are fine. i was told do not drive told me i was lucky i didn't lose my whole engine. they also said it could be due to the a/c drain tube located above this mount. strange all other mounts were fine.

'99 ford windstar. on 10/4/10 the van made an odd noise when turning right. as i drove throughout the week the sound got worse. the steering wheel also became un-centered on 10/4. i drove it very few miles that week., as i was home on vacation working on home repairs. on 10/8, i took it to a mechanic. he identified the sound as a pulley rubbing that became worse when the steering wheel was turned to the right. the steering gear pushed the engine to the right causing the water pump pulley to contact the right fender wall. turning the steering wheel to the left pulled the engine back to the left, away from the right fender wall, stopping the noise. took it home, jacked it up to find the passenger side of the sub-frame supporting the engine rusted and dropped about an inch. the van is unsafe to drive until a repair is done. i will install a piece of 1/4 steel under the sub-frame to support it until i can find a better solution. i may need to weld it to the sub-frame.

1999 ford windstar front passenger-side subframe rusted through and separated rendering the vehicle undrivable. the vehicle can not controllably steer or brake with this condition. luckily it didn't separate while at highway speed or it would have had a catastrophic ending. an immediate recall should be put out on this before anyone is killed.

I started noticing a clunk noise by the passenger side front tire. then each time you would turn the steering wheel to the right, the noise was much more noticable. then the steering wheel started to vibrate while driving. then each time you took a right turn and or drive over a bump, the clunk was not only louder you could actually feel it in the steering wheel and actually in the entire van. we took it in to see what the problem was and we were told the subframe had corroded through.

Noticed loud scraping noise when steering had vehicle inspected and found right front sub-frame rusted and separated from round rubber bushing looking into repairs now and found online that it is a common problem that can cause steering loss

Subframe severely rusted @ rear engine cushions. must be replaced immediately.

Corrosion related failure front right sub-frame. losss of stearing control, right front wheel shaking, right front brake locked up. also abs brake lights on in dash, abs no longer works, traction control light on, works no more.

Took my van into midas for an oil change, the machanic called me out and showed me the k frame is rotted and hanging off the vehicle on passenger side of vechile. this is also caused additional front end damage. mechanic told us do not drive this vehicle. it has been sitting in the front of our house since.

Irregular braking, experienced as an odd, slipping lurch at the completion of a stop occasioned investigation of a supposed braking problem by our mechanic. previously noted was the misalignment of the steering wheel about a quarter turn from vertical during straight-ahead driving. after checking the brakes the mechanic was puzzled by a rubbing noise he had heard on his test drive. while repositioning the car to investigate, the engine cradle suddenly separated from the sub-frame and dropped to the ground, wrenching the steering wheel forward and disconnecting the steering mechanism from the wheels. ancillary damage is as yet unassesed.the cause of separation was massive, evident corrosion where the engine cradle attaches to the sub-frame.this vehicle is located in a salt-belt state.

1999 ford windstar subframe cracked less than a 100,000.00 miles mechanic confused and surprised says should not have happened on such a young car
12/15/2009135992
After a couple of inspections and lots of clunking noises and alignment issues, my mechanic (and a mechanic from another shop) suggested strongly that i replace the vehicle's subframe/engine cradle. the frame was rusting/rotting from the inside out at both front ends near and around the motor mounts and the subframe bolts (attaching to the unibody frame). there was also some rot ocurring below the area that a/c water condensation drips. the frame was replaced soon after ... avoiding driving the vehicle until repair was made. unfortunately, the old part was tossed before i could ask the mechanic to save it for me.

Front frame (shop called it a k-member or engine cradle) was rusted thru & broke off where it attached to the body of the vehicle. this happened while my daughter was driving locally, luckily not on the freeway. steering wheel went out of alignment a full 90 to 120 degrees while she was driving. most shops would not fix it, but found a shop who put in a salvage yard part. ford dealer was ludicrously high dollar & very unsympathetic.

Front sub-frame corrosion has caused frame to break on passenger side. break likely occurred while making a hard right turn to join traffic on a 40mph road as a noise was heard at that time. not realizing that some structural failure had occurred the car was driven on two more occasions on the following day and at highway speed. one day later strange noise occurred again when turning, so car was brought in for service. repair shop has indicated sub-frame is severed in area noted above and car is unsafe to drive.

I was backing my 1999 ford windstar van out of the driveway at 3:45 p.m. on a clear day, sunday june 20, 2010, when, without warning, the rear axle broke in half and collapsed. the wheels tilted in. results on a highway would have been disastrous or deadly. ford shows no recall for this issue, but numerous reports are online of the same problem for the same vehicle models of several model years. no repair report yet, as this just happened a day before this report. i haven't
06/11/2010123550
Increased vibration in rear end. felt like wheel balance was way off. days leading up to axle break. lots of rear-end shimmy when going over any bumps especially if in turns. clicking noises when backing up. sliding rear end with wet road.. erratic steering. felt wobbly like very strong gusts of wind buffeting sides of vehicle. when axle split, rear end totally unstable. fortunately was on city street (and not on highway) and was able to maintain some control. was at night. deserted street and city speed of 40mph. swerved over double yellow lines. if had been earlier in day, would have probably colided with oncoming traffic. was able to overcome loss of control and steer back into lane and then over to side of road. no curb stones or i would have definitely blown a tire or two and damaged undercarriage. very scarely. thankfully no family onboard. have ordered replacement axle. may need to replace coil springs and shocks if they have been bent/distorted/damaged. mechanic says will know when replacing with new axle. i have asked to retain old parts for future inspection and proof of defect. cannot believe ford has allowed this known problem to go on without recall! hundreds have reported same problems online. how many thousands have not reported it?! tis is going to cost me over a thousand dollars to repair. also, had a major issue with totally rotted sub-frame last year --- also a major issue with other owners! another safety issue!! that cost me nearlt $1500! ford should be embarassed and sorry and help their loyal customers -- not just ignore it and them! please do something to help us and other owners before someone gets killed!

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6) we have recently experienced a broken axle beam on a 1999 ford windstar. thank god nothing happened and no one was hurt. the car was swaying and knocking from the rear end and when we got home the rear wheels were cantered out. i looked under the car to find the broken axle beam and the only thing left holding it all together was a the torsion bar. i am very glad that we were not on a highway or too far from home, since we use the car to travel to ohio and florida . we then looked on the internet to find that many other people were experiencing the same problem and no recalls. although our car has 150,000 miles on it others had under 100,000. our main concern is the safety issue with our family. we travel a lot with our windstar as do so many other families with children do and it seems as if ford does not recognize the danger. i hope that ford does not wait for a death to deal with this problem as the part that failed should not have failed. this part is a main structure of our vehicle and seems to be poorly designed. i can't imagine how many other windstars are out there with an axle beam ready to break and how many families are unaware of this potential danger. the years of windstars that i saw on comlpaints.com varied from 1999 to 2003 and its only a matter of time before someone gets injured or killed. i ask you to please look into this matter as soon as possible.  Our 1999 ford windstar experienced a crack in the subframe on the right side due to rust. to replace with a used subframe, it will cost apprx $1,000, a new one is more then the car is worth. this is a dangerous defect and i had my three children in the car. this is one of several recurring problems we have had with the vehicle and from reading other posts, this is a common issue with the subframe due to a design problem on ford's part. *tr

04/06/2010200000
1999 ford windstar. without warning the front subframe broke loose from the main chassis when the car was moving forward at a stop light. the engine and transmission dropped, disconnecting the steering wheel from the steering rack and resulted in a complete loss of steering and control. subframe completely rusted out at the point of failure. i know of another person whose 1999 windstar did the exact same thing one week earlier. car ended up being scrapped as repair costs far out weighed the car's value. this could result in injuries or fatalities if the car were moving at higher speeds. ford is aware this is happening but is not advising owners to have their cars inspected. lots of potential for accidents, there are plenty of older windstars on the road.

Broken rear axle on a 1999 ford winstar. i was driving down the road at 35 miles per hour and the axle just snapped in half. the vehicle only has around 85000 miles on it. the reason i am filing this complaint is because one mechanic told me this is a consistent problem with this particular make and model. the tow truck driver said he had towed three of these same situations in the last two weeks and tows about 12-15 a year. the mechanic who repaired it said that he has fixed 4 of them. now this is just in my location so i can't imagine country wide that ford is not aware of this problem. had this happened on the highway this could have been very serious and i am also concerned that the way to repair it is to replace it with the same part that is defective.

While driving thru an intersection, there was a loud clunking noise. the steering wheel turned hard itself, and the van was undrivable. the mechanic told us that the engine cradle was rusted thru an had broke off from its mounting point. he said this was a design flaw from ford, and that he has seen several windstars with the same problem. there are no recalls yet, and ford will not help, yet. after searching the internet i was surprised at how many other people have had the same problem.coincidently all the other windstar mounts broke in the same exact place. the mechanic has quoted us $750.00 to replace with a used part and $1300.00 for a new part. so far all of the used parts are rotted (rusted thru), in the same place as mine and not worth using. if we cannot find a quality used part soon, we will have to replace with new.

The car started pulling really hard to the right while driving causing a loss of control and almost an accident. the frame of the vehicle rusted in one spot on the subframe where it joins the frame around the mounting bolt. this is on the front passenger side of the vehicle. this has broken loose and there is subframe/control arm and other damage. dealer said when a job like this is done there is usually a snowball affect with the damage. atleast $2000. the rest of the vehicle is in good condition with a new transmission just pu in last year. car is only good for scrap now. definite safety issue. i have two kids ages 3 and 5 that were in the vehicle at the time.*tr

The rear axle (or rear support beam)broke in two on my 1999 ford windstar. we had heard some noise from the back of the car and had an appointment to have it checked the day after this incident occurred. i had thought that maybe the rear shocks were going. i was driving the car on sunrise highway in rockville center, new york when the car started bucking and there was a loud bang. immediately the car started swerving to the right and i started t smell a burning odor. it was quite a terrifying experience and i thank god that neither i or anyone else was hurt. i was able to get the car to the side of the road as i noticed the look of horror on the faces of the few bystanders on the sidewalk. i could not believe what i saw when i got out. the rear wheels were both spread eagle apart and the axle was broke in two and scraping on the ground. there was a distinct scrape mark in the road from the axle that traced my path to the side of the road. as i searched the internet i was disturbed to see that this is an ongoing problem and that ford has done nothing to take responsibility for it. i just got my car back today, august 4,2009. i had to pay $870.00 for the repair and that is with a used rear axle support from a junk yard. this is a real safety issue and before someone is killed ford should step up to the plate and recall these cars!!! to make things just a little worse, it just happened to be my 50th birthday on the day of the incident. what a birthday present from the ford motor company. i had purchased this car new in 1999 and am the only owner. the car has not been in any accident. this is not the first major problem with this car and ford sold me an extended service contract at a significant discount after i had the car for two years because of all the problems i had with the car from day one. the car has 97,000 miles on it and has had the transmission rebuilt, new intake manifold, master cylinder, brake booster, struts, rack and pinion, and more. *tr

My sisters 1999 windstar had a rusted subframe. i took my 1999 windstar to a mechanic , the subframe was starting to rust on the right side. within 4 weeks , the frame split while driving with my 2 kids in the car. it is undrivable. i call ford on 7/22/09 to let them know of a design problem (the a/c draintube drains on the subframe on the right. there is no other rust on the car, but ford said my car was out of warranty and there is nothing they can do. its not a warranty issue, its a design issue. i am having it fixed and i think ford should reimburse me . they will need to replace the subframe. *tr

Rear axle broke on my 1999 ford windstar without warning. thought i was hydroplaning, as it was raining. at 60 mph, i started to loose control and i slowed down to 40mph. i drove 5 miles, thinking i was getting a flat tire. as i pulled off the road, rear tires were scraping the fender and i discovered the axle had broken in half. *tr

When having the ball joints replaced and an alignment done, our mechanic noted that the engine cradle is severely rusted and needs to be replaced. he claimed that it was far worse than it ever should be and if this was a gm, they would take care of it. however, this is a ford and they will do nothing. *tr

1999 ford windstar- was hearing a lot of deep sounding squeaking from the passenger front side. also some cracking sounds when accelerating from a stop. had a mechanic look and found the subframe was very badly rusted. we replaced the subframe. the repair shop took pictures for us and we were horrified to see how severe the situation actually was. it was very close to rusting completely through. 1999 windstar with 98,000 miles. cost to repair was aprox. $1500. the car rides very smooth now that it has been repaired. big difference in the feel. was not aware how bouncy the car was riding. now it feels almost like a new suspension. *tr

On may 22 my 1999 ford windstar van started to make a squealing/whining noise at approximately 10:30 in the morning during what should have been a 40 minute drive to my mothers house. due to the weird noise i stopped and checked the air pressure in my tire (right rear) where the sound seemed to be originating from. the pressure was a little low so i topped it off and continued on my trip. the sound continued and i decided to stop at a service station about 20 more miles into the trip. the service station was little help, they checked my power steering fluid, drove the van around the parking lot a couple of times and it made no noises. the attendant told me he didn't have any idea as to what the sound might be and asked if i could return in an hour when his superior would be there. i agreed to return after dropping off my kids at my mothers. after going on down the road about another ten miles i felt the steering wheel start to float and drift and my brakes became useless and the van came to an abrupt halt and there was a huge bang as the entire rear end of the vehicle became disabled. as we all piled out to see what was wrong we found the rear wheels pointing inward under the van at a backwards angle. some men came to help me who were nearby they informed me my axle was snapped. looking under the vehicle i could clearly see they were right. my van will be repaired this weekend. i called ford they basically told me to eat the repairs myself. in wv a yearly inspection is required, i passed inspection at the beginning of april which tells me there was nothing visually wrong with my axle less than two months ago. i find it hard to believe that without any outside damage or force (accidents, force ect) an axle can just snap in two. if i had been traveling any faster my 4 children and myself would have been killed or harmed as at the moment it broke i had little control over the vehicle and the brakes were failing. only people with children buy mini-vans, this is scary. *tr

We have a 99 windstar with a broken engine cradle. my wife was driving the van along with my son to a local retailer. she was in the middle lane when she heard a loud bang under the van. my son who was sitting ton the passenger side said he felt it under his feet. she was able to get the van to the side of the road even though the steering was very difficult. she was about 5 miles from home so decided to take it back home. surprisingly she was able to get it home. i crawled under the unit and immediately saw that the engine cradle had snapped on the passenger side rear. it was then that we stopped driving the van due to safety concerns. i did some research on the web and they were several complaints identical to ours. it seems that the ac drain hose is situated over the exact location of the break. apparently over a period of time this causes the frame to rust out. i called ford to complain and they said that there was nothing they could do. i called my local ford dealer and passed on buying a new part due to the cost. i had to take a day off from work and go junkyard shopping to find a replacement part. i located one and we had the unit towed to lucas ford in burlington, n.j. where my wife works part time. the part was delivered and the dealer did the replacement along with a bad rack and pinion unit that was discovered at the same time. the unit had 77,817 on the odometer at the time the work was done. i can understand mechanical items going bad but this was a structural item. this situation could have been so much worse say had she been on the interstate doing 65 mph instead of on a local road doing 40 mph. i could see if this was an isolated incident but it isn't. i contacted ford one more time and complained again to no avail. i have always owned fords and probably always will but this experience along with one i had concerning my 1985 thunderbird control module has left a bad taste in my mouth as to how they take care of their customers. *tr

The engine cradle has rusted out on my 1999 windstar van. this has occurred due to a faulty design by ford. after research i found that the air conditioner leaks on the cradle creating a common problem of the cradle rusting out. this can be and has been resulting in car accident deaths. i was lucky. i had the car at the ford dealership in englewood florida(bay harbor ford) for another problem and they went to put my car on the lift and the cradle broke because of the rust. they are replacing the cradle and then continuing on the repairs. the cost to me is expected around $2,200 or more. they have ordered a used cradle. ford inspected my car before i purchase it and never told me about this rust problem. i purchased the van in 2007- oct based on their blessing that it was a sound, safe vehicle and would last me for at least anther 200,000 miles. *tr

I was recently driving with my son in a 1999 windstar when the lower control arm housing broke away from the frame. the car was completely uncontrollable and we went all over the road. if anyone had been coming the other way we would have had a serious accident. every mechanic who has looked at the broken housing said that they had never seen this happen before, even on much older vehicles, and that it shouldn't have happened. most of the mechanics i have spoken to feel that a faulty weld caused this structure failure, and that it cannot be repaired without installing an entire new sub-frame. the ford dealer who sold me the van, and the ford customer service center at the ford headquarters, said that considering the age of the vehicle, the problem was probably from rust. in addition, i was told that since there has not been a recall for such a defect on the 1999 windstar, that this is my problem. in my opinion, i interpret this to mean that ford considers it acceptable for the structure of their products to have a usable life of less than 10 years. if that is the case, think of how many of our lives are at stake on a daily basis because of 9 + year old fords on the roads. my wife is driving a 2002 ford taurus. is my family safe in it? this problem had nothing to do with a lack of maintenance on my part. there was nothing i could have done to prevent this. so who is at fault? i have photos which show the break, and can send them to you if you would like to see them. also, i still have the windstar sitting in my yard, so if you need to inspect the structure failure, you can do so. *tr updated and added pictures on 07/23/08. *kb

Started hearing a funny noise (rubbing or squeaking) on the passenger side of vehicle (1999 ford windstar). mechanic showed me where the sub-frame has rusted and spit apart. the front end of the car is literally separating from the back end. he said he has never seen this happen and recommended that i call ford. ford was no help at all. said sorry, but there was nothing they could do. made no effort whatsoever to fix this safety issue. there was no accident with this, but there definitely would have been if i continued driving this. *tr

1999 ford windstar van both ends of the engine cradle rotted away causing it failed inspection and calling for the entire assy. to be replaced. the estimate for the part and labor almost $1,000.00. this part is a very major part of the vehicles under structure and should never rot like this. when and if one or the other, or both should break off the entire weight of the engine will cause it to drop onto the pavement possibly causing a crash. *tr

Without warning, while stopped at an intersection there was a clunk from the front passenger side of the van. when moving off from a stop, the steering wheel was suddenly 2-3 off of center, down to the right. drove home and parked the van. mechanic came to inspect and found the subframe assembly holding the engine and transmission had failed, it had cracked through and no longer held the weight of the engine and transmission. he recommended not driving the vehicle due to the danger of the opposite side failing and causing major damage, extreme repairs and possible injury if occurring at highway speeds or less. the dealer only cautioned against possible exhaust system damage if the other side failed. this was not bolts or nuts rusting, the main subframe assembly developed a crack and separated. i am having the vehicle repaired, estimated cost $1200 - $1400 depending on the difficulty of removing the assembly's bolts. i have never seen this part fail on a vehicle. 2 different mechanics attest to this. i have seen vehicle frames in junkyards 20 years old still intact. i do not believe that this part of a vehicle that is driven on paved roads only should ever fail in average use. i will save the part if you desire. i believe ford should pay for this repair. there are several complaints on your website and on www.mycarstats.com. *tr

On january 10,2006 my wife catherine was leaving work that evening. when she started to drive she heard sum noises from underneath her car. it is a ford windstar van 1999 70,000 miles vin 2fmza5148xba98671. we are the original owners. she noticed her steering wheel had to be turned down to 6 o'clock to keep her wheels straight. she thought it was the power steering. when she got it to car-x in westmont,il they told her it was the cross member frame. this helps supports the transmission. the cross member had rusted away on one side and on the other side showed a crack where the other bushing hole was at. we could not go to ford dealer because of the cost factor. it has been fixed and seems to be driving just fine. i did contact ford on january 23 and we did not get any restitution for our cost. but we also wanted ford to investigate the possible hazard. if my wife was driving on the highway when this item borke she would had been killed. even the mechanic thought the metal frame seemed to show metal fatigue. i still have the part that was replaced for examination. i also took pictures if you are interested. i am very concerned. thank you. *jb
