Defect SummaryVehicle description: mini vans. contaminants such as water, salt, and windshield washer solution can enter the wiper motor cover assembly through pinholes on the exterior of the cover that are used in the molding process. in addition, on certain of the vehicles built between february and august 2000, a switch located in the plastic cover of the wiper motor gear case could malfunction and overheat. either of these conditions could potentially result in loss of intermittent wiper function, loss of wiper park function, complete loss of wiper function, smoke, or ignition of the plastic cover material. contaminant entry could also result in unintended wiper motor operation.
Consequence SummarySwitch malfunction is most likely to occur when the intermittent setting of the wipers is being used, or when snow or ice obstructs the blades from returning to the parked position at the bottom of the windshield. loss of visibility while driving increases the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will install a new wiper cover with improved sealing and water resistance. owner notification begain august 27, 2001. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact ford at 1-866-436-7332.
NotesAlso contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

We have taken this van in for repair fivetimesin one year. the first month we had it the head was replaced. the power steering has gone out for now the fifth time. i actually lost controlof the vehicle due to beingunable to turn the steering. my husband has to drive me everywhere because only he can turn the steering wheel. each time we take it for repair we are charged a deductible and i can not do this anymore. this is obviously a lemon. marshall mize ford in chattanooga tennessee is where the vehicle was purchased in january of 2001. they also have performed all service on this vehicle. ford has not been understanding of why my payments have been late, but when you are having these kinds of issues such as electrical, transmission, air conditioning, and engine malfunctions, it does not take a genius to figure out why a woman with a family who depends on this vehicle as reliable, safe means of transportation is having difficulty. maybe if their product was of better quality, my children would be in a safe vehicle, and ford would get their money on time.

Recently experience wiper motor/harness corrosion on my 1999 ford wnstar which has resulted in inoperative wipers. the wipers failed while my wife and 2 kids were driving on i-40 which almost caused them to leave the roadway. the vehicle was taken to capital ford dealer and the wiper failure was analyzed at a charge of $61.00 on may 20, 2004.the dealership advised that the harness and motor would need to be replaced at a cost of $461.00. the dealer has been less than helpful in explaining how corrosion developed. on may 25, 2004 10:45 est), i called ford motor corp. customer relations (kurl 800-392-3673). i explained my situation and referred to recall # 01v26100. she stated that there would be no warrantee/recall coverage because the vehicle was well outside the 12 months/12,000. miles. she furhter said that the recall was completed on my vehicle in 2001 and that there was no relationship to my current malfunction and the recall. logic would suggest that a recall 2 years after manufacturer date could contribute to a problem/malfunction 5 years later. please advise by written notice of your findings or conclusions. thanks

The check engine light has been on for over a year, very shortly after my last fuel emissions test in 2002. despite numerous checks by my mechanic, which detects no fuel emissions problems, the indicator light stays on. after each inspection by my mechanic, the light turns off temporarily, (1 or so weeks), and then relights. we have thus failed the md state emissions test (without being tested by them) due to this chronic light problem. my brother-in-law has the same exact problem with his ford windstar minivan, and so does another person (not verified myself). the read windshield wiper motor has been recalled. we had it repaired by a ford repair shop, and it has broken again.*ak
