On my 2000 ford windstar my airbag light has been coming on and flashing a code. i asked a friend that works at the local dealership what this code meant and i was informed that there is a short in my passenger side airbag. i said something to my local mechanic and he told me that at a conference he attended they were told that on safety equipment like airbags there is an extended warranty. i went to my local dealer and asked the shop manager about the extended warranty on airbags and they told me there is no such thing and they are covered the same as the vehicle warranty which is 60,000 miles. as of today my van has about 118,000 miles on it so i am well beyond the warranty. is there an extension of the warranty on safety equipment? i was also wondering since this is a short in my passenger side airbag can that airbag deploy without being in a crash. i ask this because my teenage daughters sit up front with me all the time and i would hate for it to explode in their face without any warning, just because i wasn't able to get the short fixed. *jb

While parked, i started my car, then put on my seatbelt. immediately after i put my seat belt on, the air bag on the drivers seat by my left shoulder blade went off. no warnings were given prior to this. my seat was smoking where the air bag was. it totally ripped the leather on my seat. it sounded like a gunshot went off in my ear.*ak

Upon review of the air bag warning indicator, the dealer's service center has determined that the vehicle was manufactured and sold to me missing the entire driver's side air bag assembly. because the safety system on the air bag system runs through a loop, all of the air bags were rendered inoperable. the dealer is making an effort to build and install the entire air bag assembly. the concern is however, that the vehicle was 1) allowed off of the production line and 2) allowed to be sold by the dealer with no functioning air bag system. if this questionaire is selected for further review, i would like to recommend 1)that the nhtsa issue an informational bulletin alerting drivers that if the air bag warning indicator light is on in their vehicle, that no air bags will deploy in an accident; and 2) that a review of the manufacturer's safety system inspection procedures is conducted, and that the procedure ensures that vehicles are not allowed to leave the plant without functioning air bags. thank you for your time with this issue.

I was involved in a head-on accident on a freeway. the driver of the other vehicle had fallen asleep, and, therefore, had not slowed down her vehicle. the impact took the front driver's side wheel off my vehicle and we rolled part way over until the ditch stopped my vehicle. my vehicle was claimed a total loss. the airbags did not deploy. i have a photo of the vehicle after the accident and the vehicle is currently located in brandywine, md at the insurance auto auction waiting for a sale date. i contacted ford to see if they could assist in finding out why the airbags failed to deploy. they told me that i would have to pay to have the airbags checked at a ford dealer, that there was nothing they could do. this answer was not acceptable to me, since it would seem they should be concerned as to why the safety equipment failed. i am hoping nhtsa can assist me in finding out the reason for the failure. thank you.*ak

The side air bag on the driver side of my 2000 ford windstar sel inadvertently deployed. the air bag deployed approximately 5 to 10 seconds after starting the vehicle. it deployed while idling and sitting stationary. in the process of this deploying, it ruined the driver's seat. i have not replaced the seat as of yet. i am trying to get ford motor company to pay for the repair. i took the vehicle to a ford dealer and they would not repair it free of charge. they analyzed the system but found no reason for the inadvertent deployment of the air bag. *tr

While my wife and young son were driving 400 miles from home on a congested expressway the side airbag deployed without warning or cause. after the dealer had the vehicle for two weeks they decided it was caused by a faulty sensor and since the vehicle was out of warranty (3 yr/36,000 miles) they gave us a bill for over $1100.00 with our repaired vehicle two weeks after later. the manufacturer assumes no liability. we are afraid to drive it.
