| Odi has received 134 consumer complaints, 285 manufacturer complaints, and 137 manufacturer warranty claims alleging incidents of engine compartment fire in model year (my) 1995 thru 2003 ford windstar vehicles.two of the odi complaints allege the fires caused structural damage to the complainant's home.of the 134 odi complaints, 36 allege the fire occurred while the vehicle was parked, 72 allege the fire occurred while the vehicle was running and 26 of the complaints do not specify if the vehicle was running or not.further review of the odi complaints shows that 72 allege that the speed control deactivation switch (scds) caused the fire and 10 allege that the scds leaked brake fluid on to the abs module resulting in the fire.there were 52 that did not identify a cause or that identified miscellaneous other causes.odi has also received 89 complaints ( not counted in this resume) alleging that the scds developed a brake fluid leak.thirteen of these complaints say that the leak at the scds resulted in braked fluid reaching the abs module.this pe has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea) to further evaluate the cause of the fires and assess the scope, frequency, and safety consequences of the alleged defect. | ||||||

| I was just told that the electrical cluster for the speedometer/rpm/gas gauges on my 2000 ford windstar van is faulty. i have been experiencing periods of time when the gauges work just fine, won't work at all, or go completely beserk. they act out at various times; ie: just yesterday, i had been driving the van for about 15 min, gauges working fine, when i put it into park all the gauges went crazy, with the rpm needle ending up buried past the highest it could go. there have been times where it hasn't worked/gone beserk upon start up. there have also been times where it is working just fine on start up and within a couple of minutes/miles they all go beserk or stop working completely, and at that point, sometimes it goes back to working fine, and other times it doesn't. my dad just got this van for my kids and i less than a month ago, thinking it would be a safe vehicle for us. it's sad to think that my dad threw money away on a vehicle that his regular mechanic now says to just sell/junk it and get a different vehicle because of the gauge cluster being faulty, the recalls on the van and the mount for the exhaust system being busted. *tr | |||

| Beginning in 2002 the abs light appeared & after several trips to ford and napa mechanics, diagnosis was never determined. then the recall of 2009 to replace the malfunctioned part occurred on 12/9/2009 - the very next day (dec 10, 2009) the abs light again appeared. i contacted the dealership where the recall work was done and they told me to bring the van back and they would 'diagnose' the problem for $120. may 2012 we replaced the affected abs part with our own finances because the ford dealership told us that the affected part was no longer under recall and was not their problem. it solved the abs light from coming on for about a week. to this date the light comes on. we purchased this vehicle based on the reports that it was an excellent family vehicle for safety. i would consider braking an important feature, too. please have ford resolve this matter immediately and not just ignore the matter. i have less than 85,000 miles on the van so it is not due to overuse or neglect. and the vehicle has never been driven in snowy conditions, is parked in a garage when not in use and all maintenance is kept current. please get this issue resolved correctly. thank you for your consideration in this matter. *tr | |||

| Beginning in 2002 the abs light appeared & after several trips to ford and napa mechanics, diagnosis was never determined. then the recall of 2009 to replace the malfunctioned part occurred on 12/9/2009 - the very next day (dec 10, 2009) the abs light again appeared. i contacted the dealership where the recall work was done and they told me to bring the van back and they would 'diagnose' the problem for $120. may 2012 we replaced the affected abs part with our own finances because the ford dealership told us that the affected part was no longer under recall and was not their problem. it solved the abs light from coming on for about a week. to this date the light comes on. we purchased this vehicle based on the reports that it was an excellent family vehicle for safety. i would consider braking an important feature, too. please have ford resolve this matter immediately and not just ignore the matter. i have less than 85,000 miles on the van so it is not due to overuse or neglect. and the vehicle has never been driven in snowy conditions, is parked in a garage when not in use and all maintenance is kept current. please get this issue resolved correctly. thank you for your consideration in this matter. *tr | |||

| As is typical with the windstar, the deactivation switch is leaking brake fluid. thus, causing problems with the abs and cruise. unfortunately, ford already honored the recall (09s09) on this vehicle. at that time the deactivation switch was not leaking so they installed a wire harness to avoid a fire when it did start leaking. (why put on a wire harness? because they knew the switch was going to fail. why not just replace the switch in the first place?) now ford will not re-open the recall to replace the switch and fix the other related problems. | |||

| Regarding the 2009-2010 perform recall 09s09 of the speed control deactivation switch wire assembly replacement. it did not work - it never worked, nor did it solve the problem. within 2 days of the installation the abs light came on again. to this date brake fluid is still leaking into the component. it causes my brake lights to stay on upon stopping and turning the car off - which if goes unnoticed, it drains the battery. to this date the cruise control does not work. and iit has also reduced my safe braking distance. i have very low miles on the van - less than 81,000 miles - so it is not cause by heavy useage. ford has failed to fix the issue which it the leaking brake fluid onto this wiring assembly. there are many ford windstars still in use that are experiencing the same problem. ford should fix this issue of the leaking brake fluid onto the assembly wire. replacing this wire assembly harness did not and will not fix the brake fluid leakage issue. | |||

| The abs indicator light keeps coming on and going off intermittently. once on it usually stays on until i turn off the car. this started during the summer about a year and a half ago. my mechanic said that most likely the ecm needed to be replaced to the tune of a $700 replacement module from ford plus labor! my ford dealer told me that the 09s09 recall work was done some time ago, but this problem with the abs light coming on continues. i am very concerned after reading up on recent information as it has been reported on multiple sites that leaking brake fluid reaching the abs electronic control module has happened after the supposed recall repair was done in many instances, causing fires and or the loss of the abs braking system working. i have also read many, many reports online about ford windstar owners having the exact same problem, without necessarily having a fire or brake failure...yet. if this electronic control module is so consistently faulty, should ford not be required to replace it at no charge to their customers, especially if there is the possibility of it causing a failure of the abs braking system? | |||

| Back in 2008 i was involved in a fender bender (about $6,000 in damages) when my abs failed causing me to slide into another car. at first i thought it was minor issue, but have since been told it's a major issue with many owners. i've found that the recall (09s09) does not address all the underlying issues and the ford dealer will not fix all of the issues. additionally i was told by my local ford dealer that there were no open items on my van for abs. when i inquired what that meant, they said that there was nothing on recall for abs on my vehicle. i had never had anything done to the abs, so it was not because it was already fixed. a week ago, i was almost involved in an accident because of the failure of the abs system; i was only going 40 mph. i constantly have my brakes checked because i have to press them hard to work. the rear brakes are almost new, and the front (pads and rotors) are new so the brakes should work better than they do. since there are major reports of problems, this needs to be addressed by ford. | |||

| I own a 2000 ford windstar and the windshield wipers have quit working for the third time. this always seems to happen while i am driving in the rain, which is not safe at all, but yesterday it happened during a very heavy thunderstorm while i was driving down the interstate at 70 mph! it has always been wiper motor failure and the motor needs to be replaced. i have seen a recall in the past on the 2000 ford windstar for this same complaint. i contacted my local dealership and they stated that my windstar was not included in this recall. as much of a hassle and an expense it is to have the wiper motor replaced, it's still not as much a hassle as it is dangerous to be driving a vehicle that not only do the wipers randomly quit working without any warning but the abs and traction control will kick off all the time and ford won't fix or do anything about the failures that so many other windstar owners continue to have. how many recalls on safety issues do you have to have before the entire vehicle is recalled? the frame, the suspension, the wipers, the speed control system and the anti-lock brake system, all the things that a driver truly needs to safely transport their family around have been recalled on the windstar. this doesn't even touch the amount of money that has been spent on the lean system bank 1 & 2 error codes and the engine light still comes on for the same code. i'm sure this has a lot to do the the terrible gas mileage that is not even close to what the original sticker quoted!. or the torque converter issues in the transmission that had to be completely rebuilt. a lot of the windstar's issues started while it was still under warranty and just continued to get worse. if were up to me i would definitely call the vehicle a lemon. p.s. after talking to my neighbor, he also has replaced his windstar's wiper motor three times. seems to be happening to more vehicles than just mine. | |||

| I own a 2000 ford winstar and recently had recall work done for the faulty scds in which ford fixed the problem by replacing the switch because it was leaking and then they used some sort of harness to enable the cruise control to work. however, the abs light is still on and to my knowledge the abs system is not working. ford claims the two issues are not related. however, when i had diagnostic work done by my mechanic he pinpointed the abs/ecm module was defective and not working. that in my opinion links the two issues because the cruise control is tied into that abs module (which is right below the scds switch). ford is not taking any responsibility for the abs module at this point. in reading some other information online it seems that module expands when it gets warm and cause intermittent electrical connection in the unit because the fragile board is being stretched and malformed. the october 2009 recall (to fix the scds switch) will not fix this problem unless you had a fire at the abs connector. which too me is ridiculous because ford knows there is a problem with the abs module design and because that part costs $800 they are not considering it their issue. they are willing to allow vehicles like mine to travel around without the abs functioning, which is no doubt a safety issue. | |||

| Speedometer, odometer, a/c and cruise control stopped working while driving. abs warning light on. found #10 fuse blown in fuse panel. this fuse is related to all of the functions described above. when researching the possible cause of the blown fuse, found information describing a possible defective switch on the underside of the master cylinder. the switch was in fact leaking brake fluid into the harness plugged into it. the harness ended at the abs control unit under the vehicle approximately under the driver's seat. brake fluid was found at this site as well. as a temporary repair, the switch was removed and a plug installed into the master cylinder. also, two 40a fuses were removed from the under-hood power distribution box to disable the abs system. as a result, the speedometer, odometer and a/c functions returned to normal. however, abs will not function until the issue of the leaking switch, wiring harness, and abs controller are addressed. *tr | |||

| Ford windstar brake, abs brake, cruise control, and speedometer/odometer electrical problems; all these problems are caused by a brake leak from the brake pressure differential deactivation switch (2b264) located under the master cylinder (behind the air filter). this leak also causes brake fluid to wick down two wires to the abs brake module (2c219). the fluid accumulates on the (always on) power connectors for the abs brake system which are powered by fuses 101 and 102 and are both 40 amp. the fluid attracts moisture, road salt and leads to a fire when the fluid and moisture act as conductor between the hot leads and ground. this switch has been the subject of other ford recalls, just not the windstar van yet. it is happening to almost every ford windstar model years 1999 - 2003. thank you very much for your cooperation. hernan ardila *tr | |||

| We own a 2000 ford windstar van. this van has had intermittent problems with the abs light coming on and staying on during the duration of driving the van. the van has also had problems with rough idling and problems with valve seals that are around the injectors going bad (twice). recently when driving the vehicle, the warning err*f came on and then a warning of fuel computer data error and oil life data error remained on. i also lost a/c power, odometer reading, and speedometer reading. the power steering and braking systems seemed to be out. when restarting the van, the idle was very rough. the van did run with the tachometer operational. i hope the fuel gauge, and temperature gauge were working. after research, we determined the #10 fuse was blown. when i tried to replace it, there was smoke coming from the back of the air filter area. there is a connector under the master cylinder that has corrosion, brake fluid and appears to be burnt on the inside. when i disconnected the connector, and restarted the van, the problems have appeared to be gone. i am afraid that this will only lead to more problems and more costly ones in the future. *tr | |||

| Under normal driving conditions, i began to notice my abs light would intermittently illuminate. i took my vehicle to my local authorized ford dealership and i was told my abs module was faulty along with the left front wheel speed sensor. i was given the following results, c1155 - lf speed input fail c1185 - power relay circuit fail other codes below are caused by c1185 and c1155 c1144 - wheel speed sensor rr tone ring tooth missing fault c1198 - abs inlet valve coil lf circuit failure c1210 - abs outlet valve coil rf circuit failure c1214 - abs inlet valve coil rf circuit failure c1233 - speed wheel lf input signal missing c1242 - abs outlet valve coil lr circuit failure c1250 - abs inlet valve coil lr circuit failure recommend replacing abs ecu module and l/f speed sensor. the failure was intermittent over the past year but over the past month the abs indicator lamp is always on. the issue has not yet been corrected as i wanted to look into the issue more. some quick searching on google quickly brought up that i am not an isolated incident but one of many. i had found on many websites that c1185 is related to the expanding and contracting of the heatsink on which the abs ecu is mounted. the result is the abs ecu fails to power on correctly due to the stress placed on the sensitive electronic board. i am assuming that the l/f wheel sensor is a separate issue but with a bad abs ecu, it could possibly be related. *tr | |||

| We received this vehicle as a gift, about a week or two after the vehicles odometer, speedometer, air conditioning and heat stopped working. it kept blowing the fuse for this. we have change the fuses multiple times sometimes we get it in, turn on the car it will blow or putting it in drive and it will blow. a couple of weeks ago the van started smoking and we smelled something electrical. we had 3 of our 4 kids with us, it really scared us. we have taken it to a mechanic and he located the problem finally, it is a faulty switch --apparently ford never recalled these vehicles the brake fluid drips on to the switch which is located on the bottom of the master cylinder and drips on to the wires, which causes the fuse to blow and can cause a fire (the mechanic has known of two burning to the ground). why should we pay $95 hr for labor plus parts with a job that take 4-5 hours to do?! this is something very dangerous!! i heard they have a kit to fix the problem but if you aren't mechanical why should be have to pay for it?! i feel something should be done about this. the mechanic told us a recall has been on these but when we called the dealer they tell us no recall is on our particle van. any website that helps you repair these shows and tells about the cost involved and the huge risk of fire! can something be done? we don't have the funds to fix this. thanks! *tr | |||

| Since buying my windstar, 2000; used, 57,000 miles i have had one problem after another. within two weeks after purchase my transmission would jump then straighten out and go on. i had it checked by five different places and all stated there was nothing wrong. it stopped completely during a family trip and i had to purchase a new transmission. it had a knock in the engine ever since i bought it but it finally got so bad i thought the prudent thing to do was to get it overhauled. there crank shaft was not smooth and had to be machined and rebuilt. i have had several different issues concerning the electrical system; abs stays on, sliding door lock failure, interior lights come on while driving and will not go off, all instrument dash lights flash on and then seem to recover, now my whole electrical system is acting up. the radio always went off when you cut off the engine and open the door, but now my battery is dead and while charging it the head light came on, (but none of the switches were turned on), oh and about 10 months ago i had to replace the alternator. no warning except right before it died the light started cutting off and on. i cannot afford another purchase at this time. i am sick of this. *tr | |||

| When i first purchased my vehicle, the battery was dead and had to be jump-started. after that, on a regular basis, my battery would lose its charge. on 12/15/00 the battery was replaced. since i purchased the vehicle the airbag light has been coming on intermittently. sometimes it flashes, other times it stays on, i can be driving and it will come on all of a sudden and later it will go off. the sliding doors sometimes pop back open when i close them. the driver's side door doesn't always open when i push the button. the passenger side door sometimes sounds like its not completely closed. it looks like it's closed on the outside, but rattles going over bumps or around corners. this problem particularly scares me because i have a child sitting in the seat next to that door. i am also afraid that the airbag is going to deploy while i am driving the car. i have brought my van in to the dealership on 3 different occasions and each time they said that they could not duplicate the concern. the last time they had my van for 4 days.*ak | |||

| My 2 1/2 year old son put the keys into the ignition,turned it to position 3,grabbed the gear shift and pulled it out of park without pressing the brake. the van rolled out of the driveway accross the street into the woods stopping once it hit a tree. i have checked into this myself and was able to pull the gear shift out of park numerous times without my foot on the brake in position 3. i called ford motor company they will not do anything about it since there is no recall. also talked to a ford dealership and in order for them to look at it we will have to pay. we cannot afford this and feel they should check it out in case this is a start of a recall. | |||

| I have a 2000 ford windstar lx which has an electrical problem that causes the abs system, the odometer, and the cruise control to stop functioning. i am told that this is due to a manufacturers defect in the brake pressure differential deactivation switch which leaks fluid onto the abs system and can result in an electrical fire. ford apparently is aware that this defect exists in 1999 through 2003 windstars but to date has not initiated a recall to repair this potentially deadly problem. please look into this for all of us windstar owners. *tr | |||

| My wife was driving our 2000 ford windstar van home when she noticed smoke coming from under the hood. soon after seeing the smoke, she saw fire. she quickly pulled the vehicle into a parking lot, got our 2 kids ( age 5 and 7 ) out of the vehicle. she then asked for assistance from a business . they proceeded to put the fire out. i had the car towed to a local ford dealer. it was there that the service manager informed us that the fire was caused by the same faulty part that is currently under recall in the f-150's and other ford products. i was told it is the same replacement part and the repair procedure for the burnt wiring is a ford authorized repair. i have contacted ford and they informed me there is not cause for alarm or concern with the windstar. they also informed me that only the nhtsa can issue a recall. ford did not offer any help with our expenses that we incurred due to this faulty cruise control cutoff switch located on the master cylinder. we are very lucky that no one was hurt in this incident. i just hope and pray that no one else has to go through this terrifying ordeal. *jb | |||

| On 5/1/00 i was attempting to stop at a red light and my car slowed down but continued to roll and would not stop. i had to stand up in my seat and puch the brake to the floor to get the car to stop. while attempting this, the car made a horrible grinding noise and shook violently. it was a brand new car and it was raining so i thought maybe i just needed to get used to it. on 5/7/00, sunday, i was out and at every stop sign or light the car would not stop again. i called the dealer the next day, advised them of the problem. i had the car towed in as i was petrified to drive it. they looked at it and told me they could find nothing wrong. i told them i was not taking the car home until they found the problem and fixed it. at 7pm on the 9th they called and said a tech had taken the car home overnight and it happened to him and he almost killed someone so they now believed me. they said it was a switch that told the computer whether i was accelerating or braking. i picked the car up at 8pm that day. as i was driving to work the next morning and went to stop at a light, the same thing happened again. i got to work called a tow truck and the dealer and told the dealer do not return it until it was fixed. that was on 5/10. the evening of 5/11 i was called once again and was told it was fixed. they now believed it was the speed sensor and had replaced it. all was well, for a while. yesterday, 10/17 i was driving home from work and this same thing happened again. this is the third time and i am scared to get back in that car. i have two small children and am afraid for their safety. | |||
