The subject vehicles are equipped with single or dual power sliding doors (psd).approximately 111,000 vehicles have dual power sliding doors.the psd is opened by any of 5 methods, the inside or outside manual door handle, the key fob, the overhead console switch and the b-pillar switch.the door may be opened only under these conditions: ignition key is in off/accessories/on/start position, gear selector in park, vehicle speed less than 6 mph, and door unlocked.the psd latch is located at the rear of the door and has a secondary and primary latch position.full and proper closure engages both the secondary and primary latch.with the ignition in the on position, as the gear selector is moved out of park the door automatically locks and that action mechanically isolates the latch, secondary and primary, from all latch release connections.in addition to the reports alleging door opening while driving, ford has received approximately 5,700 reports that allege the door does not close properly or pops open with no mention of while driving.ford's investigation into these report included owner interviews, vehicle by-backs and testing of consumer vehicles.it found that allegations of door opening while driving were in fact reports of doors not being properly closed initially and subsequently opening to the secondary latch position as a result of vehicle vibrations or driving maneuvers.ford's testing of consumer vehicles did not result in any recurrence of psd opening while being driven.odi interviews with owners affirmed the allegations of psd opening while driving; however owners indicated the event is not a regular occurrence (i.e.,it occurred only once or has not occurred recently) and that the unintended psd opening may not be able to be duplicated.in contrast, the improper closing of the psd (latching on the secondary but not the primary latch) can be duplicated, and odi verified this during an inspection of a consumer vehicle.in this condition (secondary but no primary latch), when the vehicle's gear selector is moved out of park position, a warning chime sounds and warning message appears on the instrument panel.most reports and warranty claims were filed in the early service-life of the vehicle and peaked around the 18-month in-service time period.odi and mfr complaint trends are declining over the last 8 quarters.there is no alleged injury associated with occupant falling out while the vehicle is in motion.no failure mode causing full door opening while vehicle is in motion has been verified (reproduced by odi or by trained service technicians at dealerships) during this investigation.a safety-related defect has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist.the agency will monitor this issue and reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.

In a january 26, 2011 defect information report, ford motor company (ford) notified the national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa) that it will conduct a safety recall to address corrosion related fractures in the front lower control arm rear attaching brackets and body mount attachments at the rear of the front subframe in approximately 425,288 model year (my) 1999 through 2003 ford windstar vehicles manufactured from april 1998 to july 2003 and either sold or currently registered in the following high corrosion (salt-belt) states:connecticut, delaware, district of columbia, illinois, indiana, iowa, kentucky, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, utah, vermont, west virginia and wisconsin (nhtsa recall no. 11v-030, ford recall no. 11s16).according to ford, separation of a front lower control arm rear attaching bracket may result in a lower control arm separation and separations of both front subframe rear body mounts may result in separation of the steering intermediate shaft.either condition could result in diminished vehicle directional control, increasing the risk of a crash.dealers will inspect the lower control arm rear attachment flanges and the rear body mount sections of the subframe on the right (passenger) and left (driver) sides of the vehicle.owners of vehicles that pass the inspection will be notified when to return for installation of reinforcement brackets to extend the durability of the front subframe assembly in affected areas in the presence of corrosion.owners of vehicles that do not pass inspection, but can be repaired, will be offered transportation until parts become available.repurchase offers will be extended to owners of vehicles that cannot be repaired with the reinforcement brackets.this investigation is closed.
PE10026FORD MOTOR COMPANY07/20/201012/20/2010Front Subframe Corrosion Failures
The office of defects investigation (odi) has identified 346 complaints to odi and ford alleging fracture, cracking and or excessive corrosion of the front subframes in model year (my) 1999 through 2003 ford windstar vehicles.approximately 97 percent of these complaints (334) involve vehicles that have been operated in salt belt states, which make up approximately 60 percent of the subject vehicle sales in the united states.the front subframe, sometimes referred to as the engine cradle, is a structural component of the windstar vehicles that carries the engine, transaxle, steering rack and certain front suspension components (e.g., lower control arm).for complaints with sufficient information to identify the location of the failure, most describe problems with the rear mounting bracket for the front passenger-side lower control arm with some related to the rear body mount attachment located in the same general area of the subframe (right-rear section near the front passenger wheel).the remainder of the reports allege fracture of the front subframe at other or, most often, unspecified locations.almost all of the complaints that specified the side of the vehicle indicated that the problem occurred on the right/passenger side (106), with only a few indicating the left/driver side (2) or both sides (3) were affected.ford and several complainants attributed the right-side failures to the routing of the air-conditioning lines above the front subframe on that side of the vehicle, further noting that condensation has been observed dripping onto the front subframe in the area of the affected components (the a/c drain tube is also located on the right side, near the front subframe).odi has identified 93 complaints related to lower control arm attachments, including 80 that appear to involve complete separations.all but one of these involved vehicles from salt belt states.all three crash incidents appear to be related to lower control arm separations, including one road departure into a road-side sign resulting in a totalled vehicle and a lane departure into another vehicle.almost half of the odi complaints related to control arm separation occurred at speeds greater than 20 mph and about a quarter occurred at highway speeds.three-quarters of these complaints allege experiencing difficulty controlling the vehicle and about 40 percent appear to have resulted in departures from the intended lane of travel.testing by both ford and nhtsa have demonstrated that lower control arm separation from the rear attachment bracket results in significant toe out of the affected wheel, which affects the driver's ability to control vehicle direction.according to ford, moderate braking improved vehicle controllability by reducing the amount of toe out, possibly explaining incidents that did not allege a loss of control.odi's analysis of complaints related to the rear body mount identified 41 complaints (odi only).these complaints generally report experiencing progressively worsening noise concerns when turning, accelerating or braking.although, some of the complaints that appeared to involve a complete separation of the body mount alleged difficulty steering, the effects on vehicle control from this failure mode do not appear to be as great as those resulting from control arm separation.however, odi is seeking more information regarding two complaints which alleged that body mount failure resulted in disconnection of the steering wheel from the steering rack (one occurred during vehicle service).this investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea10-007) for subject vehicles sold or currently registered in salt belt states to further assess the scope, frequency and safety consequences of the alleged defect in these vehicles.odi will continue to gather information about vehicles outside the salt belt as well.

Recall # id 10s13 rear axle inspection and axel on windstar 2001 my husband first noticed the rear axel cracked in two pieces and took the car to our mechanic who vertified the cracks and he said he never received a notice of recall on the windstars. we received notice in october an car was due for inspection in november. the ford dealer said it was a safety problem and we could not drive the car off the lot. dealer said it could take three to four months to get the part and repair the windstar. we are still waiting for the rear axel to be repaired and ford was aware of the problem in 2002 and failure to recall earlier they still do not have parts for the windstar. with a safety concern why the inspection stations were not aware of the recalls on the windstars and drivers like me were driving a cracked rear axel unknown period of time.

I brought my ford windstar in to the dealers because of the rear axle recall. i had them inspect the subframe while it was on the lift, and they discovered that not only was my rear axle broken, but my subframe is separated as well. (along with the car having an exhaust leak). as much as i appreciate the repair and rental from ford for the axle, the remaining repairs will cost me as much as the car is worth. this car has only 75000 miles on it, and is garage kept. the subframe problems need to be address by ford immediately. this is going to get someone killed.

Had the front sub framed checked. it is badly rusted and found now to be unsafe and needs a new sub frame to hold front end together. we first had this van is buffalo than nebraska. we now live in florida.

Local news article boradcast yesterday regarding rear axel problem with ford windstar. my 2000ford winstar lx was becoming more difficult to drive/control, similiar to driving with flat tires & unable to maintain vehicle control. the van wasdrifting from side to side. i looked at the rear axel & there is a visible crack on driver side of rear axel. passenger side of rear axel is also starting to crack.

The rear axle beam of my 2000 ford windstar split in 2 while i was making a right hand turn causing the rear wheels to flare out. the service station said they have made repairs to other windstars with the same problem. lucky for me i was not going fast and there were no injuries. i learned later that the beam rusted out from the inside as water had infiltrated the beam. *tr

I had been concerned about a bad shimmy at 50 mph on my 2000 ford windstar, and i had spoken to my dealer about it when i had the oil changed. less than a week later, as i pulled from my driveway, the rear axle broke completely in two. we have tried to get ford to address this problem, as there must be millions of these vans still on the road, and most of them carry children. we have not had any response so we are filing this complaint. we have heard of other failures and as you know they could be deadly. we paid to have the axle replaced. *tr

In 2004/2005 the paint on my 2000 ford windstar began flaking off. it started on the hood, then the liftgate and the roof. at this point if we have a wind storm i find chips of paint all over my drive way. ford says paint doesn't last forever and basically the problem is all mine. *tr

There were no events leading to the failure. vehicle got new tires and alignment then two days later the vehicle started pulling to the left. i went back to the tire dealer, the mechanic check the alignment and noticed that the rear axle had a crack on the driver side and was rusted through. the crack was so severe that the axle was almost in two parts and at the base there is a quarter inch separation in the crack. the tire is no longer laying flat. the bottom of the tire is facing out. if the mechanic didn't find the failure there certainly would have been a tragic accident. *tr

Every time we get heavy rains my front windshield leaks. while checking recalls i have come across this problem which my mechanic explained to me exactly as the recall reads. ford will not fix the problem because there is no recall on their site. i was told it could be because the recall was too old or it was already taken care of but they don't know which. this vehicle was purchased from a ford dealer almost a year ago. i was told in event of an accident my windshield may come loose because of the bonding and could result in injury or death. *tr

Catastrophic failure of the right lower control arm mounts at the subframe occurred with no warning or prior symptoms. the vehicle is a 2000 ford windstar with approximately 95k miles. at the time of the failure the driver was pulling away from a curb when the control arm mounts broke causing the wheel to swing away from the vehicle and the drive axle to pull out of the transmission. the vehicle was towed to a local service station where it was examined. the dealer was contacted who in turn instructed me to contact ford motor company directly. under the direction of ford motor company the vehicle was towed to the dealer to determine the cause of failure. the dealer determined that the sub-frame was rusted out in the area around the passenger side control arm mounts. ford has refused to offer any assistance in fixing the problem. a search of the nhtsa complaint database revealed 12 other complaints of similar failures with 1998-2001 windstars. (odi #s: 10152076, 10103097, 10152712, 10138539, 10183135, 10171784, 10173473, 10153590, 10200106, 10005872, 761511, 10172459) there appears to be a trend related to excessive corrosion leading to premature failure of the rear portion of the subframe on the passenger side. one possible factor could be the placement of the air conditioner system and the tendency for condensation to drip on this portion of the frame whenever the system is in cooling or defrost mode causing accelerated corrosion. this is a severe failure that is premature, not easily detectable, potentially fatal, and will likely occur more frequently as these vehicles age. i strongly urge the nhtsa to conduct an engineering investigation regarding this failure. *tr

2000 ford windstar: cracked rear axle and corrosion and related failures of the front sub-frame. we are writing to report a rear cracked axle and failed, damaged and corroded front sub-frame assembly of our 2000 ford van. ford recalled: certain 1998-2003 model year windstar vehicles operated in corrosion states for cracked or broken rear axles (safety recall 10513- supplement #10); and for failed and corroded subframe front lower control arm rear attaching flanges and rear body mount attachments. our ford van has both these failures and is unsafe to drive. the vehicle failed the state safety inspection due to its cracked axle. the inspector advised us the van was unsafe to drive. the koons ford service department has inspected the van and concluded that the rear axle and front sub-frame have failed because of corrosion and both need to be replaced. the vehicle was operated regularly in maryland and the district of columbia, as well as driven in the winter in snow and ice conditions in high corrosion states. we were told by koons that an extension of the recall was denied by ford because while the vehicle was operated in high corrosion states, it was not registered in a high corrosion state. northern virginia weather is similar to official adjacent high corrosion states. the national weather service groups northern virginia with areas of maryland and dc with regard to snow fall. sodium chloride (salt) is virginia's primary snow removal and ice control chemical. the registration requirement is erroneous. consideration should be given to whether a vehicle was operated in high corrosion areas, where salt is used . ford's letter of 1/ 26/2011 to nhtsa, states that we are taking the action to confirm our commitment to safety and to address any potential vehicle owner concerns.we request that the recalls be extended to our vehicle.

Hi..on january 25,2010 ,i was driving my 2000 ford windstar wheni received a flat tire on my right rear wheell. aaa came out to repair flat and when the tech was finished he showed me the cause of the flat. the rear axle was rusted and broken, causing the wheels to tow inward and make the tire rub on the car body, causing a blow out. i took the car to the dealer, kelly ford ,of melbourne ,florida. i requested a recall check and was told that there was no information on this failure at this time. the rear axle and the tire were replaced by the ford dealer on january 28, 2010. my repair bill was $1030. dollars.. i understand that you are now investgating this problem.i hope this will help..

The main recurring problem with my windstar has been a leak in the right rear of the cargo area, resulting in damage to the headliner and a body control module that wiped out the lights, turn lights, brake lights, and dome light in the rear of the vehicle. i purchased it in october of 2002 and had issues with this immediately. the dealer i bought the van from replaced the carpet and attempted to seal the liftgate hinge and electrical connector. there was still a leak and i took it back, their response was that i shouldn't take this van to a car wash. i took it to a mercury dealer and they fixed a recall that was supposed to take car of the problem. despite the effort, it has been leaking for three years and i didn't find out until my wife told me the lights went out. the headliner and carpet were soaked. i also found corrosion on the casing of the body control module, a part that ford was going to charge me almost $400 for. not including labor. to make a long story short, i ended up taking it to an independant body shop. it's going to cost us $350 to remove the liftgate and repair the damage to the integrity of the body and correct the leak. i was lucky enough to find a body control module for $150 that i'll install myself. $500 is a lot ot spend on something that ford should have taken care of on the assembly line, especially since this was the subject of recall. there could have been a fire and my wife is disabled. i've owned three ford products and all have had water leaks. all of these were new or newer vehicles. all of the competing brands i've owned including fiat, gm, datsun and chrysler have never had this problem. the owner of the body shop we took it to pointed out the repairs made by the mercury dealer had also failed. he also commented that the van might have been in an accident, something that was never disclosed to me at sale. *nm

We have had problems with the automatic sliding doors on our minivan since the original date of purchase. when using the remote or interior buttons to close doors, they frequently malfunction. when trying to close the doors, sometimes there is just a clicking noise and the door does not close at all. other times, the door closes and then immediately pops right back open. often when trying to close the doors manually, the doors fail to latch. other times, the doors get stuck in an open position and we are unable to close them, either manually or electronically. we have taken the van to the dealership on two different occasions and they have not been able to duplicate the problem, or they simply state that there is not a problem. this past summer the motor which operates the door closing system was replaced. the most recent event occured on 2/3/03. this time the sliding door came open while the vehicle was in motion. we immediately took the vehicle to the dealership. they once again claimed that they can't find anything wrong. this is a very serious vehicle defect that could result in injury or death.

Since we bought the vehicle the sliding doors have had a mind of their own. we have had the vehicle in the shop two times for the doors opening on their own and this will be number three. you can be parked somewhere and come out and the doors will be open and they would have been locked and completely closed upon leaving the vehicle. the sensors on the doors are also supposed to open if anything gets caught in them. my son had his arm in the way and it all but crushed it before it opened. checking around the net it seems that quite a few ford windstar owners have been having these problems. i am only glad that they have not opened while driving down the road. of course when taking the vehicle to the dealer they can not find anything wrong because it will not do it for them. if i were the only person having this problem i could see where it would take awhile to figure it out. but i'm not! something needs to be done by ford before someone gets hurt or killed. when the vehicle gets back from the dealer this time i am sure it will fall under the lemon law. suposedly ford has a case number assigned and is working the situation. we haven't seen anything yet. i am a master chief in the navy seabees and am currently deployed to korea and it is hard for me to understand the lack of support we are getting from ford. i am going to exhaust all possible avenues to get this problem resolved, hopefully for myself and all others that are having the problems. thank you for your time and i hope you can look into this, what i would consider to be a major problem. *ak

2000 ford windstar with power sliding doors has been having problems where the drivers side sliding door will reopen after it has closed. ford has looked into the problem, changed parts, sent an engineer, etc. it still happens. continuosly called ford customer service after my dealer heard nothing from regional (which was where the problem is now directed) customer service says they can't do anything, because regional is over their heads. my dealer told ford and i have told ford that this is a serious safety issue, as it has happened while the car was in gear and moving in reverse. cannot get any help. where can i go? also, the first time i reported this problem and had it taken to the dealer was over a year ago.

I have a 2000 ford windstar that i have had since it was purchased new. today while driving down the highway, i heard a loud pop. the van started to feel funny in the rear, almost like i had a flat tire. i pulled off the road and upon inspecting the rear wheel, noticed it was leaning in at the top. i looked at the rear axle and it had snapped in half. needless to say, this was inspected in january for this very same recall. my family was with me and could have been injured or killed because of this.

Ford windstar recall 11s16 i contacted ford headquarters regaurding the front recall on 4/18/2011 i spoke with a woman named donna documented case # 0546080521 when i asked about the front recall parts when they were going to be available she told me nobody knew anything about them. then i asked her i was calling ford cause i thought they were the one to call cause they were manufacturing them. i was shockingly informed they werent manufacturing them and didnt know who was or where they were coming from. i even asked her if they were going to fall out of the sky then? (she laughed) she told me to call my dealership. which i have asked my dealership 3 times now and got 3 different answers. but i did leave a message for the service manager to call me. my concern is if ford headquarters isnt manufacturing the parts for there vechiles how safe are these parts and have they been tested? who is suppose to be manufacturing these parts do you know? are these orignal factory parts? because the back braces they put on my windstar are not factory parts. so is the front parts going to be the same kinda of fix? are these fixes ford is providing safe and been tested since they are not factory parts ? and will they last? this is my #1 concern. can you you please give me some answers thank- you for your attention to this matter.

2000 ford windstar rear axle and front sun-frame failure: ford dealer has had my van for 7 months now since september 1, 2010. i just received another recall notice this week about potential front sub-frame failure. dealer says my van failed front end inspection but is repairable and must now wait for those parts also. ford has been great with rental car and treated us fairly. however, i have lost total confidence in the safety of this vehicle and do not want it back, even with repairs. aside from sitting with the same fuel in it for 7 months now, it has obviously incurred weathering and wear on systems like tires, battery, oil, etc. i have also been paying insurance for a parked vehicle for 7 months. of greater concern is the fact that this vehicle has completely lost all trade in value or resale potential. with only 80k miles, i had intended to keep this vehicle for many more years. it has always been garage kept and dealer maintained and the body is in great condition. two weeks before the rear axle cracked, i had a ford dealer complete $1,400 in front end maintenance - new suspension components, struts, bushings, etc. bottom line is: i have lost total confidence in the safety of this vehicle, even with repairs; i have lost money on repairs just prior to the rear axle failure; i have paid for insurance for a car sitting in a lot for 7 months - so far; i have lost all trade in value: i have lost all resale value - nobody in their right mind would buy a windstar now after all the media coverage; i cannot afford to replace it with a comparable vehicle at this time. i do not want this vehicle back! i urge you to consider the issues i have listed above as you continue your investigation. while some points above may be outside the scope of your investigation, ford needs to understand the enormous impact of this situation on their customers. i am a ford guy with 3 other ford vehicles, including an antique. i am not happy and ford needs to make this right. thank you

Right passenger subframe rusted and rear engine mount separated from frame due to rust--no longer able to bolt new mount to the frame as the frame is corroded and a crack is present
10/15/2010159000
I was driving 55mph on dixie highway in groveland twp., mi. my mounting bracket that is a factory weld to the engine cradle broke away from the engine cradle and pulled my drive shaft out of the transmission. this is on a 2000 ford windstar. the weld broke due to corrosion from salt eating away the weld itself. my vehicle is undrivable, luckily no one was hurt. i had myself and my 3 children under the age of 7 in the vehicle at the time of the incident. ford motor company is telling me that there is not a recall on my vehicle and that they will not pay to tow it to the dealership or to fix it. i am appalled by this. this is clearly a design defect and not my responsibility to fix. the detroit free press had an article on this very problem on december 23, 2010. it stated there have already been over 300 claims of my nature. the article stated this organization was investigating this matter. i ask for any help you can give me in getting ford to fix my vehicle.

2000 ford windstar, the control arm front passenger side detached from the frame while my wife was driving to work on 11/19/10. luckily there were no other cars coming or she would have hit them head on. all vehicle controls were lost; no steering , no transmission drive train. the vehicle swerved out of control until luckily, the vehicle stopped partly on the side of the road. the vehicle had to be towed. i also noticed a hole in the rear axle which there is a recall for. the vehicle obviously cannot be driven and i am unsure if the transmission is damaged due to the drive axle being pulled out of it.

2000 ford windstar lx 95000 miles. rear axle is cracked. right rear subframe is completely rusted through where it mounts to the frame. both parts are ready to fail and could have resulted in injury or death. please recall the windstar for the rusted subframes before people start getting hurt. it is a real problem and you will receive many more complaints. that nonsense ford is spouting about rust is normal on vehicles of this age is not going to fly. body rust is normal in the salt belt, frames and axles rusting to the point of breaking is not. i bought a windstar for it's five star crash rating. i thought it would keep my family safe!

I own a 2000 ford windstar, and had the water pump break recently. when the mechanic put the vehicle on the hoist he noticed a large degree of rusting and separation on the subframe connecting to the control arm. this issue needs to be repaired before the vehicle can be driven again as it is a major safety concern - as per the mechanic.

I was driving down the road doing 90km when i heard a large bang and lost all control of my van.i vehicle came to rest at the edge of a steep ditch.apparentllythe subframe on it had rotted causing the right control arm to break, which in turn tore the axel from the transmission causing the transmission fluid to leak everywhere.as well very likely causing transmission issues.
10/10/2010185000
The subframe, located at the front underside of the 2000 windstar, is supposed to help keep the engine and other integral parts of the windstar in place and stable. it has been compromised on this vehicle with 185,000 miles, and broke during a turn into a park after church on the aforementioned date (10-10-10). fornunately the results were not deadly but could have been if we were driving on the interstate which we frequently do. what happened was a detachment of the drive axle (half shaft) from the transmission, which occurred when the lower control arm mount separated and caused the wheel to pull free from the drive axle. furthermore there were no warnings prior to any of the aforementioned failures. the area of the subframe affected by this corrosion is located on the passenger side where it attaches to the lower control arm. this is the first time it has occurred. this vehicle was towed to tps transmission in toledo oh and is being repaired. the sub frame is being replaced and i will ask that the old part be returned. in the meantime what is going to be done with this obvious growing problem?

While replacing the steering gear, we were removing subframe mounting bolt when we found the top of the subframe on the passenger side to be completed rusted through with a large hole. there were also cracks down the side of the subframe with very little holding it together. it was determined to be undrivable and unable to pass vehicle inspection required by the state.

I read about the nhtsa action # pe10026, front subframe corrosion on my 2000 ford windstar. i had my mechanic check it today and he found that the subframe was corroded around 75%+ of the connection point to the lower control arm. this was on both the right and left had sides and it was corroded all the way through from the bottom to the top of the subframe. .he recommended that i not drive the vehicle until i had it repaired as it was a very serious safety issue with a high probablity of it breaking all the way through and causing loss of control.

I was driving home and all of sudden my 2000 ford windstar made a funny noise and the front wheels locked up. i could not turn the steering wheel. i had to have it towed home. my windstar is now sitting in my yard, because the subframe rusted away from the control arm.

2000 ford windstar the right front axel started making a rubbing noise and the steering wheel whent about 6inchs off center. the subframe had broken apart at the mount at the right rear attachment because of corrosion and came down about 4 inchs causing the whole engine tran to go out of line. the repair was to replace the sub frame for $1600.00., had it done right away because the whole engine trans could break lose with unit hanging down.

I was driving my 2000 windstar on the skuykill expressway on monday, july 19, 2010 at 12:33 pm on my way to an appointment. about a quarter mile befor the gilph mills exit heading east, i was in the passing lane traveling about 55-60 mph, when there was a load pop from the rear of my van. i immediately lost controll of the van and it slid across the highway . i first hit the embankment off the shoulder, was thrown back into the highway as the van slide on the drivers side and then flipped upside down. the van came to rest in the middle of the skuykill expressway upside down, facing the traffic. thank god all traffic stopped and no one hit me, and i didn't hit anyone.. the van was totalled. i suffered head injuries, as well as broken and bruised ribs in my back, as well as severe muscle damage. i was able to unhook my seat belt and crawl out the window, and i waited till help came. as i looked at the upside down van, i did see that the rear axles was split in half. i was taken to bryn mawr hospital for treatment, and released several days later. i still have not been able to go back to work because of my back issues.

Driving straight on road appro. 35 mph in town normal stop and go traffic, and rear axle broke completely in half. had vehicle towed to my mechanic. need to replace the axle. will cost around $1000.00. no one was hurt but it could of been tragic if i had been on the highway or going around a curve. van has approx. 142,000 miles on it.

I own a 2000 ford windstar se. i noticed my car shuddering a bit on the expressway late last week (5/20/10.) i slowed a bit and the movement stopped. i pulled off the expressway and continued driving on city streets. i tried increasing my speed but could not recreate the 'shuddering.' over the weekend, i felt the movement once more so i stayed at low speeds on city streets and planned on taking the car in on monday to have it checked. the movement had not returned. on sunday, may 23 i had to drive about 7 miles to work. about 1 mile short of my destination the shuddering returned, but much worse and at low speed. i slowly drove the car into a parking lot and saw my left rear tire was tilted. thinking the tire was loose (i had new rear shocks put on about 1 month ago and thought maybe they had not tightened the nuts enough) i jacked the car up a bit and popped the hubcap. the lug nuts were all tight but the raised car gave me a clear view of my rear axle, completely split in half. the axle was still holding up the car only because the two halves were still pressed together. the axle was completely broken through (not just cracked) basically right at the mid point. i have had the car taken to a repair shop on a flat bed truck, but work has not started on it yet. tonight i checked on line and found that this problem is being investigated by your agency. here's another case for you to add to the list. i feel extremely lucky to be writing this to you without having been in the accident that this defect so easily could have caused. interestingly, i have had work done on the car a couple of times in the past month and no one noticed/reported any axle damage. the car was riding fine up to this past week. *tr

I hit a small pot hole and when i got to the parking lot i was told my rear tires were side ways. my husband was able to get the car home 2/10ths of a mile. when the mechanic look at it he said the pot hole wasn't the problem. it was already cracked. he said he had repaired a number of axles on ford. also, my transmission began skipping at the same time this whole incident started. when we first bought the van, i was in line in the cafeteria and a gentlemen asked me if i was picked each day in a windstar and i said yes. he informed me that windstars are notorious for having transmission problems. i know know he is right.

I was driving hit a small dip in road and then all of a sudden i felt something slam into my car from underneath it. i stopped did not find anything. but as i started driving again i kept hearing a knocking sound from front end. i knew something was wrong. i immediately took it to my mechanic. he found the undercar frame completely rotted through by the right front shock. he said this car could not be driven with this defect and i was lucky that engine didn't fall out as i was driving. the car is still the same, nothing has been done to repair the car. *tr

2000 ford windstar with approx 102,000 miles and rear main axle beam broken almost into. have done some internet searches and found several cases of this. there is no recall from ford and this is extreme safety issue with windstars. lost almost total control of my vehicle and thank god i was traveling at only 10 mph. at interstate speed this would have been an almost certain catastrophe. will be contacting ford in morning to see what they have to say but from all online accounts they seem to be refusing to acknowledge or even offer to repair. i would much rather have a sticky gas pedal that i can somewhat control the to have an axle snap into at highway speeds. *tr

The rear axle on my 2000 ford windstar just split while driving it! there is no rust or wear and tear. i have all my maintenance receipts and my mechanic says this should have never happened. my children and i could've been killed if we were driving on a highway instead of a local road. *tr

On or about december 1st,2009 my 2000 ford windstar started making loud squeaking noises from the rear of my van when i would make turns and also started swaying from side to side whenever i would go over bumps .almost felt like my rear wheels were going to fall off from very loose lugnuts, but they were tight. as the next few weeks went by the problems became worse. today(1/2/2010)i decided to look underneath the rear of my van. i was in disbelief to see my rear axle cracked almost all the way through about 2 feet in from the drivers side. i couldn't believe it. i have 4 small children and we just went on a trip on the highway 2 days prior to me checking the problem. i have seen this is a common problem with the windstar . i have done some research on this problem and found this to be a widespread problem with all different years of the windstar. something has to be done before someone is seriously injured from this problem. this axle should not crack or break under normal wear of the vehicle. this is a major component of the van and causes serious safety issues. right now the van is sitting in my driveway. i am trying to find a used axle from somewhere so i could get it back on the road. ford should really do something about this issue. thanks you... *tr

After having trouble steering took the car in for a front end alignment. was told that the right subframe was completely rusted out and cracked and unsafe to drive. car is just 10 years old and 85000 miles. mechanic says this should not have happened with a car of this age. ford has been contacted and would not take any responsibility for it. in addition took it to a ford dealer who said that the starting price to fix the car was 1600 and could only go up. *tr

The 2000 ford windstar had been having some handling issues such that if there was water or sand on the road we would fishtail and feel like driving on black ice. i was always able to recover control of the vehicle without incident. it got to a point the vehicle couldn't be driven safely in wet or snowy conditions. the vehicle was pretty much driven in small town conditions. the problem was identified when the rear passenger wheel top was angled into the vehicle (i.e. camber off by 2-3 inches). mechanic inspected the suspension and found a cracked rear axle with no signs of rust or damage nearby. the axle will have to be replaced. *tr

My back axle broke in half while driving and luckily we were not killed or on any major highway at a high speed. this is an ongoing problem with ford windstars, there are many complaints about the same issue. most repair centers say they have never seen anything like it and this should never occur. how many lives need to be lost before ford recalls these axles? my neighbor who also has a ford windstar had the same thing happen to them 3 months ago. *tr

The k-frame(sub frame) is completely rotted out on the right side. it is bad enough that it cant be welded, must be replaced. on a vehicle that is 9 years old with 80000 miles and in perfect shape. i was told by numerous garages that this should of never rusted out this fast. i think that ford should be responsible for the repair. *tr

Windstar broken rear axle strikes again. we were on our way to dinner with retired ford employee and his lovely wife. we were in dearborn on michigan avenue when bad noises, and smells came from the rear of the van. we pulled over and discovered a totally broken axle cover. my husband works in steel. if we had been on the southfield as we had planned and this happened there would have been disastrous results not only for us but we could have placed other families in danger as well. both men. the police who stopped to help and the tow truck driver agreed that axles don't just break. *tr

The car seemed at first to be hydroplaning due to the rain, but then it got much worse. when i removed the rear passenger wheel, i saw the rear axle beam had snapped at the weld point. the car was very difficult to drive and the repair shop indicated that we should have had it towed in because sometimes the wheels will shear away from the suspension when the beam is broken. this car has only been in one minor accident, with minimal body damage and no damage at all to the body structure, so this was without question a manufacture defect in the part. *tr

2000 ford windstar sel. discovered a crack in rear axle. it was located near the center of span between rear wheels. the crack ran from top to bottom of the axle about 3 and was spread apart approximately 1/8 on bottom. there was only 50% of the axle remaining. fortunately i discovered it just prior to a vacation trip with our family of 5. there has been no known event to explain the cause. *tr

1- there was not any symptom leading up to failure. 2- the failure was on the front passenger wheel. the weld on one of the control arms actually broke off the frame. as a result the wheel was allowed move in a different direction then the driver side wheel. this forced the vehicle off the opposite side of the road in a very immediate uncontrolled manner. 3- there was nothing done to correct this problem as of yet. dealer doesn't have any interest in fixing the vehicle unless we pay for it. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 40 mph on normal road conditions, and avoiding to hit a deer, the sub frame of the engine manifold fell out. the vehicle had to be towed to an independent body shop, who determined that the sub frame rusted completely and needed to be replaced. the dealer was contacted, who determined that the vin # did not fit under any recall. the vehicle was currently at the body shop waiting for repairs. the ball joints and brakes were replaced as well. updated 12/01/06. *jb

About 2 weeks ago i noticed creaking noises from the rear of my windstar minivan. i took it to my mechanic who discovered a severe crack in the rear cross beam (frame); there is only about 2 inches of metal remaining holding the rear frame together. the crack has rust around it. there is a second crack at the same location on the opposite side of the cross beam, also with a line of rust that wraps around the cross beam. the component is apparently near the failure point, as the rear wheels started to spread apart (like wings) during the drive to the mechanic. if this part had failed while i was driving on the highway, it could have lead to a fatality. i plan to have the part replaced. *jb
