Illumination of the abs and brake lights on the dash, they do not go out until vehicle is restarted, i have had the vehicle to several mechanics and none seem to be able to correct the issue. recently the front brakes seem to be warped resulting in jerking motion while stopping, brakes and rotors just replaced 1 month ago.

Abs light comes on intermittently, even in summer with no adverse driving conditions. it stays on for varying lengths of time, then disappears for some time, then out of the blue comes back on. braking a little bit harder than usual does seem to trigger it. also, recently, the cruise control just suddenly stopped working. it worked fine one day, then all of a sudden, a day or two later, i hit on, but it refused to set. i tried again on another day and it still wouldn't set. *tr

As mentioned on the http://www.fordwindstarrecall.info/ website, we seem to have this problem: 6/25/12 - another recall effort is in the works. the (mostly unservicable) ecu master relay has a bad soldier joint which fails prematurely and causes the abs light and dtc c1185. it also causes the enhanced abs braking system to become inoperable. if your abs light is on. report the problem at nhtsa - safercar.gov. use the category brakes, the more reports the better a chance of continued action. *tr

This is a continuing situation: after driving a short distance and applying the brakes the first time; as the car slows to 5mph, the brakes fail and a grinding/cranking type of noise is heard; after a small distance the brakes re-engage and stop the car; very dangerous; the abs light then comes on and the brakes work normally* without abs controls. this situation happens every time that the car is started until the abs light comes on and apparently disengages the abs system. *tr

I took my vehicle for a recall for the rear axle a year ago and they sprayed some sealer on it and said it was good to go. so now the axle is cracked, and ready to snap. what should i do? also there is a recall on the brake pressure deactivation switch on my vehicle which is leaking brake fluid on the wiring harness. i shouldn't be driving it, but i need to get to boston. again what can i do about this? *tr

Braking distance suddenly increased. abs dash light as well as red brake light illuminate intermittently . all systems checked, fluid levels at proper height, no abs codes, replaced driver side speed sensor as visual inspection revealed a crack in the housing. abs light remains intermittent and abs activates randomly, mainly at speeds less than 10mph. *tr

The date pertains to the first occurance. the abs & red brake light will illuminate. when this happens the vehicle has lost the assistance of the abs durning an emergancy stop. the dealers diagnostic report requires the abs control module to be replaced at my expense. this vehicle has less than 20,000 original miles. *tr

The issue is caused by heat in the abs (anti-lock brake system) ecm (electronic control module) (2c219) module causing expansion of a large aluminum plate (heat sink) in the ecm which is attached to the ecm main circuit board at all points. the expansion occurs when the unit gets warm especially in the summer months and causes intermittent electrical connection in the unit because the fragile board is being stretched and malformed. the code most commonly scanned by professional mechanics is code c1185. seen by us owners as a yellow abs brake light. *tr

We have had our brakes serviced back in 2008, and once before that in 2003 (almost a year after we purchased the car). in the past couple years, the abs light and the parking brake light have constantly been turning on after five minutes of driving. the brakes still work, but i am unaware of why the lights continue to come on. when we had our brakes serviced in 2008, the lights have already been coming on, and replacing the brakes did not help. brakes have been an issue for our windstar since we bought the car. *tr

Abs light is on most of the time. sometimes it will go off and then it is continually on. *tr

From time to time, the abs and brake lights come on, usually as you are just driving, which makes the abs system inoperable. ford has looked at this problem and actually stated they are not sure what the problem is or how to fix it. with that said, the car is not inspectable and makes it difficult. this should be a recall issue! *tr

My brakes and abs light stays on even after repairing brakes my abs system is not working, one day while raining i try to stop my vehicle and it kept on going. *tr

Abs brakes are activating during normal braking. my abs and brake lights started coming on about 3 years ago. my abs brakes actually activated while i was braking in normal road conditions, no gravel, rain, etc.. my son was driving and i was in the passenger seat. we were coming to a stop at a highway and the car wouldn't stop when he broke. it just kept going. it was very scary. didn't know what it was but just assumed it was a one time deal. the lights continued to come on off and on ever few weeks. about a year later the abs brakes activated again while i was driving through town (30 mpg) and coming to a stop. when i was going around 5 mpg and there was a car stopped in front of me my car would not stop. it kept pulsating and moving forward. scared the heck out of me. i almost rear ended the car in front of me. at this point i took it to the local ford dealer. they ran a $100 diagnostic and said it was the abs module that needed to be replaced...$980 later. the clerk told me that this may not fix the problem but that they needed to do this *first. we did not have it replaced since they could not guarantee this would fix the problem. the lights continued to come on but at closer intervals. last week, august, 2012 it happened for the 3rd time; the abs light did not come on during this episode. i was coming to a stop at a highway entrance.... my car would not stop again! it kept pulsating and pulling forward towards the oncoming traffic. very scary!! the brake and abs lights are now coming on 2-5 times were driving trip. *tr

The abs system have been intermittently operating for a while and cased the are to almost rear end a vehicle. both the abs and brake lights are one when if fails. this fault first occurred around 78,000 miles. *tr replaced the abs module and the second one had the same issue. ford indicated that they wanted me to buy a new part at >1250$. not sure that it would work any better that the two i have or felt that it would not last.

Abs and brake lights come on. go off when vehicle is turn off and back on. problem is intermittent. less so in cooler weather. front and back brakes check out o.k. no sign of fluid leak in brake system, however abs seems nonfunctional. had dealer check lights. said couldn't find a problem with the brakes and that the abs module might be bad. read that numerous other owners have the same problem. i feel that these cars were assembled with defective abs modules. *tr

The abs light and exclamation point light stays on all the time. there is also a scrubbing, dull screeching sound when i apply the brakes. i've had it checked out and attempted to be fixed several times, but neither mechanic has been able to fix it. they turn the lights off, but they come right back on. please recall and correct this problem before people get killed. i'm afraid to drive the van very much. *tr

Brake light and abs light continue to come on. happens more in the warmer months. something must be wrong because it come on all the time now. if i shut the car off and turn it back on, it will go off. sometimes it will stay off and sometimes it comes back on after a few minutes of driving. i'm concerned that this is not safe and that there may be some bigger issue. the last thing i want is for my van to lose it's ability to brake with my family inside. *tr

I got abs sign somewhere in february. it pass my may inspection too. but finally i decided to get it checked and it turned out that abs module is faulty. because of this, i some times get brake sign also on. dealer found that brakes are in good shape, shoes, pads and rotors are in good shape, fluid is filled up too but abs module bring brake light up sometimes. i am concerned about in case of emergency brake is not applied properly. i would like ford to replace abs module as a recall. *tr

Constantly being troubled by the brake/abs light on the dash board. upon going to auto zone and checking what kind of code comes up for the problem, i received 20+ codes relating to brakes/abs problems. i looked up the problem and discovered it was very popular amongst ford windstars from 1999-2003. i have a 2001 ford windstar and this problem is very troublesome. upon requesting a quote to fix this problem, i was looking at $2000+ (parts, labor and warranty). it seems the abs module is bad, and it itself costs $550 just in parts. this problem is persistent among a lot of ford windstar and potentially dangerous and life threatening. i would like ford to take some sort of action and issue a re-call.

Abs light comes on when the van reaches approximately 20 mph. also the brake light comes on in warm to hot weather. took the van to the dealership and was told that the problem may be the ecu. i did some research and found this is a very common issue with the ford windstar.

2001 ford windstar: abs, traction control system, and cruise control all suddenly fail while driving at highway speeds. each system works properly at 55mph and lower, until driving on slick or rough pavement; at 60mph or over, all 3 systems are unusable even on dry and smooth pavement. to have speed or braking system not working at the times one might need them presents possible dangerous consequences (fortunately we were able to pump the brakes, and steer tight-fisted to avoid collisions so far).

My abs and brake lights stay on and the odometer and speedometer stoped working. i reported this earlier today but need to change the category.

My 2001 windstar had been making a scrunching noise each time i went off a curb. i took it to a tire place as that's when i found the crack in the axle in august 2010. the tire dealer didn't make that kind of repair so i call ford dealership who told me to bring the car in and that a recall had just been issued. my car sat for six months. on 1/26/2011 the dealer called and said my axle had been repaired and that i could pick the car up. i couldn't pick it up that day. on 1/27/11 i heard the news state a new recall and i looked it up. turns out my car is involved in that recall too. i went to the dealer and i communicated to them that i do not want that vehicle back under any circumstances. the abs light has been malfunctioning for three years or more. since i got the vehicle i had had many problems with sensors and i have had to replace the transmission after having only around 78,000 miles on the vehicle. i completed all maintenance on my vehicle as suggested by ford, yet i have had so many problems. i called ford on 1/27 and told them i do not want the vehicle back. they said a buy back isn't being offered for this recall at this time. it may be offered when the letter is distributed. i still do not want this vehicle back. i have three children and i cannot trust that this vehicle is safe.

Abs failure - 2001 ford windstar
03/15/2008100000
2001 ford windstar abs and brake lights keep coming on for no reason. might come on when hitting bumps and might not. i have had mechanic look at issue. many failures report. ended up brake relay/control module is bad and needs replaced. approx. fix $1200 which explains why ford won't admit issue.. my niece had same van same issue instead of dealing with it she traded van in. lights don't stay on all the time but both come on at same time and go off at same time. mechanic said brakes will work but no abs available when lgiht is on. i would think ford would recognize this as safety issue. problem has existed for approx. 2 years or more on this van. we have owned for approx. 6-7 years.

For two years my abs and brake light for my 2001 ford windstar will come on after driving for long periods. i have taken to the dealership and they say nothing is wrong and that if the abs light is on it just means that the abs system won't work. well, driving in snow and ice in chicago without abs is a huge issue.

Abs and brake warning lights on dash board occassionally turn on. once on they remain on until the car is restarted.

I own a 2001 ford windstar. my abs & brake light came on about 4 weeks ago. it would come on a few min. after it gets warm & not go out till i turn off the vechicle. i took it to the ford dealership in commerce asking if they could check it out. i told the parts assoc' what was going on & he stated for about $1000.00 it could be fixed.(a new sensor) he also stated that most people who have this problem do not bother fixing it due to it will not cause any harm. the abs & brake only apply to things like a rail road track. and that i will still have brakes.

I stopped at a red light and noticed smoke puff out from under the left side of my hood. i thought i was overheating, but my temp guage showed nothing. as i pulled away from the red light and off to the side of the road i noticed my abs light and my brake light had come on and my o/d light began flashing. my speedometer and odometer had completely shut down. i checked under the hood and saw no visible problems. i drove the vehicle back home and over the next few days i noticed i was losing brake fluid and brake pressure. i parked the vehicle and began driving a second vehicle until i could get a mechanic to check out the windstar. i took it to my mechanic and he said the brake fluid was leaking around the brake pressure differential deactivation switch in front of the master cylinder. he said he had heard there had been problems with this on windstars and recommended i check to see if there had been a recall, which i am doing now.

Abs ecm failer, ford windstar 2001: the abs and brake light come on after 5-10 min. the code for the proble is c1185 or relay problem. the abs controler is a abs ebc 430 made by kelsey-hayes . the problem first started in 2007. i see the ebc 430 unit made for the gm was recalled. this has made for some close calls when braking in bad weather. this is a big safty problem. i have found many links on line about this problem. this to a 100% failer rate. covers all windstars and freestars. the abs unit needs to be recalled and replace.

No accidents yet, my abs light and brake light come on within the first mile everyday i use my windstar and the abs activates and often my 2001 ford windstar has an ugly noise and the brake pedal pulsates and the car does not want to stop, just like it would in an anti-skid cituation. i have replaced front brakes, rotors, calipers, rf wheel sensor (purchase abs code reader and still get rf sensor codes). recently i took my windstar to ford and replaced the brake-cruise control recall. i questioned my dealer about the abs and they have no clue almost like i needed to leave it and they would check it out and try to locate the cause. i do not want anyone to start replacing parts that i have replaced especialy the ones i replace more then once. i hear alot of talk about a control module being bad so i think if that is the rememdy it should be replaced at no charge by ford and i won't demand they reimburst to me the money i have already spent to remedy this problem. i like this vehicle but would like to get this abs problem fixed or disable the abs. also, another option for ford in my case would be to disable the abs so i don't get that anti-skid in my brakes on a dry day and all wheels are rolling. its pretty unnerving when your car is not in a skid condition the abs takes over and you are panicing to get this car to stop. i understand this abs is an option and since i did not buy the car new i would strongly consider just disabling the abs system brakes so they would work like the old fashion brakes that skidded if you applied enough pressure...

The abs warning light and brake warning light on my ford windstar come on after a few minutes time. the light takes longer to come on during colder weather, but will eventually come on if i drive the van long enough. i have tested my brakes during the winter on slippery roads after this has happened and have come to realize that i lose my antilock brakes. my wheels lock up and my van slides uncontrollably. this problem has been getting worse over the past couple of years. when it first started happening it occurred only every few weeks or so; now it is a daily occurrence. i understand that this is a problem for my windstar owners. i have not had my brake system repaired yet. i cannot afford the high cost.

Frequent and persistent deactivation of the abs system in 2001 ford winstar. this problem has come and gone on the van and there are recalls to cover the fire risk. the abs system will through an alarm when the car is driven. this is an intermittent alarm the comes and goes it the cooler months and if no most of the time in the summer months. when the abs system is disengaged the breaking distance is much longer when compromised road conditions. we were involved in a near miss when driving in snow and ice. this prompted further investigation and it seems that this is a persistent problem for abs systems on the winstar van.

Started off with yellow abs light on with the red brake light on as well. seemed to come and go as it wanted. some time during this i notice a connector loose off the master cylinder and connected it. lights stayed on even longer, months at a time. brakes still worked (abs untested). had changed front and rear brakes, and this still hadn't corrected. at some date the cruise control stopped working. in 2010 i had the 'recall' switch replaced on the front of the master cylinder. the cruise control worked again, but a couple days later the lights were back on. i changed the master cylinder and now the brakes are even softer than before even after a lengthy brake bleeding cycle. i still get the light, but they're not always on when i start the vehicle as they were before. this is in addition to all the other lights that have come on, and all of the tsb searches and parts bought and replaced i have done in an attempt to make my vehicle safe to drive.

Abs & brake lights are coming on the dashboard intermittently a few times each day. started doing research and found hundreds if not thousands of people with my exact same complaint and trouble codes stored in the computer. had problem diagnosed at ford dealership and they say its the abs control module underneath the drivers side door mounted on the bottom of the van. we're going to replace the abs module to turn off the brake lights on the dashboard, and are going to replace the brake switch on the master cylinder to help prevent chance of fire. *tr

On or about 10 july 09, the abs light and the brake light on my 01 windstar, were coming on intermittently. on 24 july 09, i took my windstar to meridian ford in meridian, idaho to be checked out. a leaking brake switch and the abs module shorting out were the problems found. i opted to pay $174.42 to replace the leaking brake switch, and i chose to wait to spend $654.00 to replace the abs module. both abs light and brake light still come on intermittently. *tr

On a very hot day i went over a bump and the red brake light and yellow abs light came on in my 2001 ford windstar. i was panicked that the brakes would fail, but after parking the van and restarting it, the lights were gone. they came back on intermittently over the next couple months. i took it to the dealer a couple times before they told me it needed a new abs module. i research the internet to understand the problem, and why it only happens when it is hot out. we decided to postpone the $700 repair, since it doesn't occur when it is cold out. we had no problems this winter, but now that it hot again, the lights are again coming on intermittently. my understanding is that we won't have abs only when the lights are on. but this is a big safety concern in that we don't know if we will be able to count on the abs system working when we need it. ford should be responsible for fixing this problem since it is definitely a safety issue that results from a defective part they designed. at this point we have not replaced the part, it is still in the van, but i anticipate that we will have to replace it soon as the weather gets warmer and the lights become more frequent. *tr

2001 ford windstar: brake pressure differential deactivation switch (2b264) develops a leak causing brake fluid to work down two wires to the abs brake module, the fluid accumulates on the power connectors for the abs system which are powered by fuses and the fluid attracts moisture and leads to fire; therefore no speedometer/odometer-cruise control abs brake electrical problems failure. taking the van to the dealer to be fixed because of major safety problems@ our cost. *tr

Mid 2008 our family minivan abs (anti-lock brake system) light started coming on which meant this feature was disabled. the owners manual states this not to be a problem unless the brake! light also comes on and stays on. for a number of years now the brake! light has come on and it is usually just that we'd hit a bump and the e-brake handle had moved slightly and would go off when handle was reset. recently after driving 25 miles to work with no problem the rear brake seemed to freeze when it was time to go home. the minivan had to be towed to our dealer. we were told there were a number of failures when the car was hooked up to the computer but that the only noticeable problem was there was a cracked half-shaft and tone ring broke which could have caused false computer readings. these two items were fixed and we were sent on our way knowing that if the lights were to come back on there was a possibility the abs module might have to be replaced - with nothing being said of any possible problems with this system, or any explanation of why our rear tire brakes froze. after some internet investigating is appears this problem is more frequent than stated and can result in a fire which is why this agency is being reported to. aside from the very expensive auto bills which we have already and will have to pay to get these problems fixed we don't want our family to burn up as we're driving down the road. thank you for your time and we hope this input and others input will help resolve this problem. *tr

The brake pressure differential deactivation switch (2b264) located under the master cylinder (behind the air filter) over time develops a leak. this causes a short and a fuse trip, fuse #10 if the engine is on. this leak also causes brake fluid to leak down two wires to the abs brake module (2c219). the fluid accumulates on the (always on) power connectors for the abs brake system which are powered by fuses 101 and 102 and are both 40 amp. the fluid attacks moisture, road salt and leads to a fire when the fluid and moisture act as conductor between the hot leads and ground. this switch has been the subject of other ford recalls, just not the windstar van yet. notice the fluid that leaked on the part below it. this switch will cause cruise control problems, speedometer, odometer and abs brake system problems. *tr

The abs brake system does not function as designed by ford. there is an intermittent failure caused by heat in the abs (anti-lock brake system) ecm (electronic control module) (2c219) module causing expansion of a large aluminum plate (heat sink) in the ecm which is attached to the ecm main circuit board at all points. the expansion occurs when the unit gets warm especially in the summer months and causes intermittent electrical connection in the unit because the fragile board is being stretched and malformed. the code most commonly scanned by professional mechanics is code c1185 and is revealed as a yellow abs brake light and the red brake light coming on in the instrument panel. the abs ecm part is faulty and the ford dealership says ford will not take responsibility for my repair because there is no recall. this defective part affects the safety of the passengers because the abs brake system is disabled when the failure occurs which is approximately 90% of the driving time. i ordered a new abs ecm unit to replace the defective unit to protect my family. original part has to be returned as there is a core charge associated with the purchase of the new unit. *tr

My car experienced intermittent brake emergency light and abs light signals on dashboard, and trouble code c1185. dealership diagnosed abs module failure. the repair was made. i discovered from http://www.fordwindstarrecall.info/ that an nhtsa investigation was initiated on this issue. the dealership which repaired the car still has the old part, but wants to charge me a $100 core charge to return it to me. i think that they are trying to discourage me from recovering the part. i would like to know if it is federal law that they must return it to me for free, so it can be used potentially for evidence. *tr

The abs warning light and red brake light come on intermittently. that is once or twice a week, usually on hot days, these lights come on. but when the car is restarted they are off. i have read on the internet that this is a common problem with ford windstars and is due to a malfunctioning abs electronic module. replacing the module does not guarantee that the problem will not come back. this can be serious problem since abs system is not working when lights are on. *tr
06/02/20081020001
My abs and brake lights are on and off intermittently throughout every day. the mechanic said that the abs control module was faulty, but when we researched on the internet, we did some checking at the brake pressure deactivation switch and there is fluid leaking from the bottom of the connection. we took out the fuses, but we understand that this is the problem that causes fires. please make ford call this as a recall. we have already been through this with our 98 ford expedition.... we don't need to have another car as a fire hazard! *tr

2001 ford windstar sport se # drove vehicle 2 hours, parked car for approx 2 hrs, returned and then unable to start vehicle, battery would fail then car needed jumped. this happened 3 times. turn car on, abs yellow light, e-brake red light on constantly when driving (intermittent) and will go off when car is turned off. cruise control does not work any longer. pulling e-brake from floor does not trigger red e-brake light. looked behind air filter, brake fluid saturated on abs brake module and wiring below the brake pressure deactivation switch, leaking coming from the brake pressure switch. looked at the switch under drivers side door (below car), verified sticker on cover (next to abs ecm module) indicated ford (kelsey-hayes). checked fuse #10 & #14 (was not blown). the failure lights continue to come on sporadically. ford needs to make this a recall on the windstar.. why is it that this is a recall on other ford vehicles with the same parts and failures. this is a huge fire safety hazard. please make ford make this a recall. *tr

A few months after i bouht the car (may 2008) the abs and brake light started to come on, intermittently, every couple of days. it would come on when i went around a sharp curve or hit a pothole. i took the car to 3 different mechanics, when the lights were not on (no error codes) and when the lights were on (every abs error code came up). i was told by all 3 mechanics that the abs sensor board needed to be replaced. the part was going to cost over $300 plus labor to repair. they also told me that the car was ok to drive but that when the lights came on my abs was not working and that i should be careful when driving in rain or when road conditions were slick because i would need extra time to prepare for a full stop. i have researched on the internet for the same problem and found that there were many others who were experiencing the same problem and have tried many different fixes with no resolution, including the replacement of the abs sensor board. what do i need to do to ensure that my abs brakes will work correctly?

I currently keep getting grunting/popping/mouning noise from the front suspension when turning -brakeing-starting to move car forward . already replaced the sway bar links and bushings but the noise still comes and goes. also my brake-&-abs lights comes on and off for no reason. and the locks on the doors work when they want too. just had inspection done again 3 weeks ago but they can not find the problems. talk with ford about the noise to try to find out if there is any danger of a crash because of this and i keep getting the run around.

Abs, traction control, and brake lights come on shortly after starting the car. abs, traction control are 'off''. safety issue when driving in snow. this problem has occurred 3 times now, over last 2 years, each time i am told its a brake sensor, or the abs sensor. i pay several hundred each time to get it replaced, but problem returns within 6 months. concern is safety- abs and traction control critical in northern ohio area in heavy snow area- please look into this.

The abs and brake light began coming on intermittantly a couple of months ago. it seems that the abs ecu module is the problem as multiple abs codes were read. now, two months later my cruise control no longer works. if you do the research online as well as in your complaint section for 2001 winstar it is an all too common problem. it seems to be a problem that was not addressed properly on an earlier recall by ford (09s09) which included a scds wiring harness replacement only caused by brake fluid leaking onto wiring and causing a potential fire hazard. many owners believe the fluid not only ran down the wiring continuing to run onto the abs connector causing parts to short out and fail and also onto the cruise control connector causing it to fail. i truly believe this is the reason all these abs modules are failing...it's amazing how many complaints with my same problem are on your website these are very expensive parts to replace (over $1000) plus labor. the absence of the abs system does cause braking problems and can cause the brakes to lock up and skid...this happened to me...just missed having a wreck! the connector to the cruise is also being effected causing it to fail as well. i think ford should be required to at least check these vehicle and replace these parts if they are found to be faulty before someone gets in an accident. they may have already.

Abs and brake light indicators come on for no apparent reason. does not seem to affect the use of the brakes, but if there is a failure how will i know if it is true or false? this has been going on for about 3 years. this appears to be a safety issue and i have talked to other owners of ford products who have the same problem.

We took a 300 mile trip to chicago in our windstar that we just purchased less than 2 months previously. while we were out of town, the van started acting up. when we would take off from a stop, the van would jerk and bounce like maybe the brakes were locked. we stopped driving it while we were up there until we had to leave. on our drive home, we were about 100 miles from home the o/d light came on. then a little later, i noticed some type of liquid coming out the back. we tried to get home but at 90 miles from home the van totally quit moving. we were able to coast to the side of the road. under the van was a large puddle of transmission fluid. after having it towed home ($240) we took it to a transmission shop. they had to replace a front seal and torque converter ($950). i'm filing this complaint because i have seen on the internet where the transmission seems to be a problem with the windstar. now the brake light and abs light come on occasionally and won't go off until it's turned off and restarted. this also seems to a big problem with the windstars. i haven't taken it in for that yet but dreading it. this is a very nice vehicle and i am rather disappointed in it.

2001 ford windstar.i took it to the dealership to have some safety recalls done.a few days later i was driving along and smoke started boiling out from under the hood so i pulled over and by the time i got stopped and got the kids out safely it quit smoking.i raised the hood and could see some burned wiring under the brake master cylinder.we got back in and drove on then the transmission started shifting wrong and the brake pedal didn't feel right,it felt spongy.i took it to my mechanic who is ase master and ford senior master certified.he replaced the trans range sensor and told me that the fire was caused by a defective cruise control deactivation switch leaking brake fluid.he replaced the switch and advised me to take it back to the dealer and have them do the recall which is what they were supposed to have done in the first place.he said that it also had a damaged abs module and wiring and that was part of the recall.i called them and they said they only did the rear axle recall that was on the letter i got from ford.my mechanic said that they were required by law to complete all safety recalls while it was in their possesion.i am going to take it back but i'm afraid to drive it cause it hardly has any brakes.my mechanis said it was because all the brake fluid leaked out of the switch and got air in the lines.

When i started my minivan it was an afternoon. i noticed that when i started driving the minivan it was like forcing it self then i would change the speed and it would sound different but it felt like it was heavy, i would change it to n and it still make this sound like if i was driving on a wet highway and engine was still loud. when i would speed more than 30 mph it just wouldn't respond as it did before. i purchased this minivan not to long ago -i would say close to a month-. when taking it for a test drive everything looked good, sounded ok -other than the shocks that needed to be replaced- and no lights were on. but after two days had gone by the previous owner said that the abs light would sometimes turn on and would turn off on its own. so, i had a mechanic inspect the minivan for the replacement of the shock wondering if this might take care of the problem, but after the work was done the abs and brake light started to turn on. went back to the mechanic because it came making weird sound on the left side so he told me that brake pads also needed to be replaced, so i thought to myself this would take care of the problem which it didn't happen. now after close to a month of owning this minivan and weather becoming much hotter i noticed this problem. i had a mechanic look at it again today and he suggested that a take it to a ford dealership to have the minivan inspected since he was also aware of a recall done on these types of vehicles. i am just afraid to keep on driving it because i can tell something is just not right and i feel that it's just going to brake down on me anytime soon. and since i have a baby i prefer not to drive or drive a long distance or even on a high speed.

Took 2001 windstar into dealer for recall on rear axle jan. 2011 was called to pick up vehicle on april 29th. when vehicle was picked up the brake, abs and traction control off light were lighting up the dashboard , these lights were not on when van was taken in. walked back into the dealer and told they had no one available to look at it but bring it back on monday when they could run an analysis on it. stated they had replaced the axle and any number of things could have happened. asked if vehicle was safe to drive was told it was. came back monday morning had a total change of attitude without looking at vechicle was told it probably was not anything they did but would look at it and let me know in 10 minutes. half hour later informed they think it was the main brain and could cost me up to $1500.00 to fix. dealer stated that the windstar had a lot of problems he still had over 100 to repair in his lot. was told by dealer and ford customer care that the problem was mine not theirs, replacing rear axle has nothing to do with brakes but work sheet shows they replaced the brake pads. now i do not have abs or traction control on my vehicle

There have been numerous issues with this vehicle lately. car would not start, power steering went out, oil light stays on, i have to put oil in every week, seat motor stop working and now the brakes do not work. we were driving out of town with our 3 kids and i went to press the brakes just to find that it was not there - it was all the way up under the dash board!!!

Tl* the contact owns a 2001 ford windstar. while the contact was driving approximately 40 mph, the emissions, abs and rear brakes warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel. the warning indicators remained illuminated until the engine was turned off. the failure would recur whenever the engine was in operation. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was previously notified of the defect. the failure mileage was unknown.

My abs and brake lights stay on and the odometer and speedometer stoped working. i reported this earlier today but need to change the category.
04/08/2011110000
The brake fluid at the master cylinder is leaking on the wires under it. causing the abs and brake light to stay on. i am afraid this will cause a fire, due to the fluid being flammable. now i have a repair to pay for that i have never seen happen in a car. i am almost 55 and been driving 40 years and this is a first
04/15/2011114000
Good day. i have a 2001 ford windstar passenger van. on the bottom of the master cylinder, there is some kind of pressure switch. this switch constantly leaks brake fluid onto a wiring harness connector below it. my research has found that many windstars of this era also leak brake fluid from this switch. my brake lights (on the rear of the car) sometimes stay on when the car is parked. also, since the cruise control recall was repaired, the dashboard light indicator telling me that the cruise control is on no longer operates. also, the cruise control will not work unless i pump the brakes prior to using it. i believe all of these problems are related. the ford dealer told me he would gladly fix the problems but will charge me quite a lot of money to do it. i believe ford should be responsible for the costs associated with the repairs of these safety items. thank you.

Ford windstar 2001 brake and abs light come on after a short distance of driving and remain on. checked with mechanic who said it's a known problem with ford windstars. this causes me great concern because it means braking distances are increased in an emergency braking or slippery conditions.
11/02/2010174000
Have noticed the braking distance has suddenly increased. have inspected brakes, lines, and master cylinder and found no leaks or abnormalities. amber abs light and red emergency brake light come on randomly while vehicle is in motion. recall 09s09 has been completed by ford.
02/02/201150000
Ford winstar - 2001 - abs and brake light come on - or just brake light comes on - appears to be same problem as reported by many on http://http://www.fordwindstarrecall.info/
08/01/201046000
On a hot summer day in 2010 parked about 20 minutes with air conditioning running the abs fault with the red brake lamp first appeared. when the engine is shut down the fault lamps are cleared. currently when the ambient temperature is above 80 fahrenheit and as the engine compartment warms i can expect the yellow abs lamp and the red brake lamp to both turn on. had fault codes read once and it reported main relay failed. no repairs have been made as i decided it's a superfluous feature and i will drive without abs protection.

I own a 2001 ford windstar. in august of 2010, i took the van into the dealership due to recall 09s09. they installed a fuse harness only. it appeared to fix the problem, and the abs light went out. today, the abs light came back on, so apparently there's still a problem.
07/04/201055000
There has not been an incident or crash, but the abs, trac off, and brake! light all come on at once. anti-lock brakes and traction control do not function when this happens. it has occured intermittently for about a year, but happens almost constantly now. the lights would go off after restart, but now come on almost immediately, and stay on in spite of a restart in cold or hot weather. the ford dealership says their diagnostic code indicates a need to replace the abs module at a cost of nearly $1300.00 with labor on my 2001 ford windstar lx minivan which now only has 60,000 original miles. i googled this problem and found a site at www.fordwindstarrecall.info that discussed my problem.

11-23-2009 vehicle recall (09s09), abs light & brake light coming on. work was performed this date to correct problem at croft ford, athens, pa. about a 15 minute repair. vehicle ok for about (8) months (lights did not come on). starting in august 2010 both lights started coming on again and come on almost everytime the vehicle is driven a few miles. i do notice during the cold weather of december and january that they don't come on very often in the cold weather. this appears to be the same problem for which recall (09s09) was put out. we are concerened about this problem especially when the weather warms back up here in new york.

Brake, abs, and trac dash lights are on most of the time for the past two years. when traveling north in colder weather the lights are off. spoke w/ local ford service rep. and was told to rr abs module if lights bother me. otherwise not a problem as regular brakes ok but abs will not function. just finished googleing the problem and found a description of the problem w/ the cause. the abs module circuit board is securely attached to a heat sink that expands/contracts with teperature changes. this expansion/contraction results in damage to the cicuit board resulting in an intermittant or permanent loss of designed braking assitance/distance. i have lived with this problem for the past couple of years due to the cost of the repair, as i imagine others have. the design/assembly of this circuit board is obviously flawed as the web site has documented. a question for ford would be, how many abs ecm inquires have been receved and how many have been replaced under warranty or at customer expense?.
12/23/2010
2001 ford winstar recall 09so09 they did not fix the problem. the dealer said they only needed to change out the cruise control connector!!! i asked about the abs and other parts listed to be inspected in the recall and he denied that any of that was to be inspected under this recall. so they may have fixed the cause of the problem but did nothing about the damage to the vehicle. my symptoms are: loss of brake fluid (problem # 1) burning smell or smoke (problem # 1) brake light on after brake service. (we think this back pressure breaks the deac switch) (problem # 1) brake light (red) (problem # 1 or problem # 2) 15 amp fuse #10 blowing out (problem # 1) speedometer and odometer stop working. (problem # 1) cruise control will not activate or deactivates without warning. (problem # 1) abs brake light (yellow) (problem # 2 or problem # 1) ford trouble code c1185. (problem # 2) problem codes p0171, p0174, p0401 171,174,401, egr or system too lean issue extremely excessive braking distance!!! almost been in a couple accidents because the vehicle will not brake efficiently. brakes lock somtimes when braking, causing vehicle to slide!!! ford denied to my face that any of these problems were related to the recall, but your report and other investigations prove that it was and that i have been lied to about a very important safety issue that has already put me and my families lives at risk!!! i request further investigation into this matter and do wish to see something done about it

Abs and brake light has been coming on and off for 2 years now increased bracking distance.when i really needed my brakes they failed to work properly i use to be able to stop fast now it takes alot more to stop . this is dangerous and this is a family vehicle!!

The warning lights for the abs system on my 2001 ford windstar are coming on much more often now. over the past couple of years they would come on only very infrequently, maybe once a week and only after having driven for an hour or so. now they come on within minutes, though they still do not come on immediately. now that it is winter i have noticed the brakes locking up and sending me into a skid whenever there is snow or ice on the road. the problem is getting very bad and i fear for the day when the brakes go out completely and i do have an accident.
12/15/201090000
Braking distance suddenly increased we have noticed that the braking system illuminates the abs and brake light intermittently and there is a corresponding failure of the abs system that prevents it from working properly. fortunately, we have not yet had an accident as a result of the failure, but we have also not yet replaced the system to fix it.

Driving ford windstar van in warm weather. abs failure light illuminates on dash on a daily basis in summer. downloaded error codes; cleaned ecu for abs.

Our abs and brake warning lights in the dash have been coming on intermittently for around the last 2 years. we took the van to the ford dealer and they said that the abs should be working as long as the dash warning lights are off. on a recent trip, we were traveling at 35 miles per hour and needed to stop quickly for a car turning in front of us. i slammed on the brakes and the tires squealed (brakes locked-up) instead of the abs activating, thus significantly increasing my breaking distance and nearly causing a wreck. there was no pulsing of the brakes like when the abs is functioning correctly. the dash abs and the brake warning lights were not on before nor after the incident. the dash abs and brake warning lights have come on since then, but the warning lights go off once the car is shut off for awhile. upon researching this issue on the internet, it appears this is a common malfunction (dash abs and brake warning lights coming on) in 2001 ford windstars.
07/04/200980000
The abs light and brake light both came on simultaneously. after turning engine off and on, indications returned to normal. happened again a few months later. dealer's service writer dismissed it. now is happening regularly; sometimes multiple times per day. checked brake fluid level and it appears to be okay. brakes appear to function normally; no squeals, grabbing or sponginess, no apparent loss of braking ability. car stops in a straight line. brakes have been serviced.

Vehicle show both brake and abs lights intermittently. apparently no failure to either. brakes were serviced in 2005 and 2010 with no apparent fix to the above lights. suspect ecm failure due to heat as shown on http://www.fordwindstarrecall.info/ shown as problem #2 on the website.

Occurence: 12 october 2010. travelling i-95 washington,dc/suitland, md. vehicle: ford windstar, 2001. speed : 60-65 mph. traffic : dense. failure of defective part : rear axcle snapped in two parts while traveling on smooth highway, northbound. explosive sound , lots of smoke, extreme consternation/fear of heart attack experienced by my wife and i ( my wife has a dangerous heart condition ihss) at occurence. i immediatly turned on hazard flashers. managed to manuever across several lanes of traffic to get to highway shoulder safely!! thank god for the alert fellow travelers behind us!!! if we were hit by any 18-wheelers on the highway, i wouldn't be writing this complaint now!!! concern for our safety was shown to us by fellow travelers; particularly, md traffic safety person, who should be commended by his superiors for his professional and understanding actions!! he looked at the damage and said that he had never seen anything like it before; and he said that we were licky to be alive!!! van was transported by professionals to the nearest ford dealership where i first became aware that a recall notice was in force for my vehical!!! at this point, i became greatly disturbed that i had no previous notification of this dangerous condition and that my wife, grand children, etal were traveling in potential rolling coffin! in my opinion, this seems to be criminal; particul;arly if greater profit motives might be involved! i certainly hope that inferior materials were not used in this regard!! i was inforrmed that my van would have to remain at the ford dealership until ford motor company decides how i will be provided with a safe vehicle , since no replacement axles were available. (nb ; i have no idea whatever other damage exists as a result of this awful failure! i certainly don't want a duplicate axle replacement to replay this horrific catastrophy! in my wife's delicate condition, i cannot expect her to travel in this unsafe vehicle! justice!!!

Tl-the contact owns a 2001 ford windstar. while driving approximately 8-9 mph the contact stated the abs and red brake light illuminated on the dashboard. the contact stopped and checked the brake fluid, and added fluid to the vehicle. he stated he continued to his destination with the lights still illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer. the dealer advised him of recall 09v399000, vehicle speed control and performed the recall work. the vehicle was taken to an auto parts store for a diagnostic and no codes displayed the failure. the vehicle has not been repaired. the failure mileage was 130,534 and the current mileage was 131,768. vwb

Tl-the contact owns a 2001 ford windstar. the contact stated that when attempting to stop, the brake pedal would extend to the floorboard. it would also pull the vehicle when trying to stop. the vehicle was repaired several times at an automotive center but the failure continued. almost all components of the braking system were repaired and replaced. the vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. the contact called the manufacturer who referred her to nhtsa. the current mileage was approximately 134,000. the failure mileage was approximately 120,000-bk

Breaking distance suddenly increased : abs light goes on and off intermittently and when it goes on brakes do not function normally and cause increased breaking distance without warning. twice now including today i have been parking my car (so maybe 5 mph) and the abs brakes failed to function properly and the light lit up and if a curb was not between me and the building i was parking at acting as a buffer and helping slow the car to a stop, i possibly could have hit it or crashed. i also almost hit a car in front of me recently , possibly within and inch, when it slowed/stopped somewhat suddenly (but not overly so) and then i had to slow/stop and my abs light then suddenly came on and my abs brakes failed to stop me in the usual way and and usual distance for the pressure i was applying (which was stopping fast but not slamming on the brakes) and i could feel a sort of stuttering or vibration of the brakes and slipping with my foot on the brake peddle as if it were trying to engage but not succesfully engaging. at first this intermittent abs brake light going on was only occasionally but now it is becoming more and more frequent and putting me and my familly in very dangerous situations to where even though the abs brake light turns off as if it is working fine again, i now know it is not working fine and that the brakes could stop functioning properly at any moment. the light only goes on when i am pressing on the brake peddle (but not every time i brake), it does not light up without that as a pre-requisite. then it will either stay lit for a few minutes and go away or it will stay lit until i turn my car off and go away the next time i start the car up.

The vehicle is a 2001 ford windstar sel. while driving on wet / slippery roads, the stopping distance is increased due to a failure of the abs system. the failure of the abs system is indicated by illumination of the abs and brake dashboard lights. the frequency of occurrence is any time the vehicle is running during warm / summer weather and less frequently, but still almost daily, during cool / winter weather. the brakes have been fully inspected and worn or suspect parts replaced. at the last service visit (to a different mechanic than previous visits) the mechanic stated that the computer code indicated that the abs control module needed to be replaced. he also stated that this is a common problem with ford windstar vehicles. the failure has not been fixed due to the expense.

Braking distance suddenly increased. 2001 ford windstar brake light and abs brake light intermittently on. we took our 2001 ford windstar minivan to our local ford dealership to have the 09s09 recall repaired. the repair was made; however, we are now having issues with the abs and brake light consistently illuminating on vehicle dashboard. the abs and brake light does not illuminate when vehicle is first started up; however, illuminates on vehicle dashboard while driving. abs / brake system warning lights continue to illuminate on occasion after recall repair performed. braking distances greatly increased / affected when warning lights are on. brake pedal travel also greatly increased - pedal slowly continues to floor with steady pressure, accompanied by whooshing sound with no increase in braking power

When the abs light and brake warning lights come on, the braking distance significantly increases. this is an intermittent problem that comes on with hot weather. on a cool morning or at night there will be no warning lights, but they come up when car heats up in the sun. the ford recall 09s09 was done on this car and brakes are in very good condition. the abs seems to work when the warning light are gone, but brakes seem to be slow to respond in hot weather when heat triggers the abs warning lights.

Vehicle type - 2001 ford windstar during warm, summer months my abs and brake lights will intermittently come on every day. there is no rhyme nor reason for when this happens other than only during warm weather.braking distance does increase. when engine is turned off and restarted, the lights will go off. but lights will come back on after driving. this has been happening during the summer over the last 3 summers. have had mechanic check my brakes multiple times with no leak found. performed ford recall 09s09 at ford dealership but problem still is occurring.

I was driving on a snow/ice covered road on my way home from work. the road was not plowed. i lost my brakes and started to slide sideways down a hill. i tried to steer the 2001 ford windstar to the side of the road. i was not going very fast. i was petrified. i finally came to a stop my bumper hit a drain pipe. all axles were bent. smoke was coming from the hood. the windstar was totaled. i received 18 stitches in my mouth. my top teeth bit through my bottom lip. i have a scar. the airbags did not deploy. i filed complaints at several different places and as all these other people are saying i never received an answer. i would like to be included in the class action lawsuit. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2001 ford windstar. the contact had a recall repair performed in relation to a brake fluid leak. she was not sure of the recall information and stated that it may have been issued by the manufacturer as a voluntary recall. although the vehicle was repaired, the brake fluid leaked over the engine (it was not cleaned up after the recall repair) and the leak ruined the transmission range sensor and the abs sensor. the contact called the manufacturer who refused to correct the problem. the vin was unavailable at the time of the complaint. the failure mileage was approximately 124,000. the current mileage was approximately 126,000.

My 2001 ford windstar's breaks were locked and i could not disengage them. i had the car serviced for this problem many times, most recently in january of 2010 when i was told that they determined that the problem was the rear speed sensor. they replaced it and told me it was all set and wouldn't happen again. yesterday (4/6/2010) while i was travelling in interstate 95 south it happened again with disastrous consequences. i put my brakes on to slow down but instead of slowing down my car came to a screeching halt in the left lane of fast moving traffic. we were hit twice and the car was totaled along with the other cars involved. i am wondering if this has happened with other 2001 ford windstars.

Abs lights illuminate on dashboard during which time antilock brake system and traction control does not operate at all. this occurs approximately 10-15 minutes after vehicle has been started and lasts the entire time the vehicle is being operated. this problem appears in warm weather around 95% of the time and about 30% of the time when temperatures are below freezing. appears to be the antilock brake control module overheating but i cannot confirm that. have had the speed control deactivation switch replaced under recall. dealer inspected brake system at the same time and said the control module will have to be replaced at a cost of over $1,000. i am hesitant to spend the money as i am not sure if the new control module will have the same defect. i was hoping the previous recall would solve this problem but it did not. wonder if the two issues are related. *tr

Feb 26th 2010 2001 ford windstar perfect condition no problems no lights on dash....feb 27th 2010 car is started and smoke poured out of hood on driver side after being started after that the abs light emergency brake light and o/d light are on and the computer information center on the display is advising to check transmission and there is a fuel data computer error and the odometer is blank and the speedometer is not functioning the heater on our vehicle has stopped but the fans still blow but only regular air. i've taken it to a ford dealership today to be repaired under the recall for the vehicle speed control issue and they have done the bare minimum to fix the leaking that has occurred due to the faulty switch leaking brake fluid and starting the small fire i experienced feb 27th 2010 but are unwilling to resolve the remaining issues caused by and listed above. *tr

Abs/ brake light comes on while driving. the manual said that if this happens you should go to a garage immediately. i went they said it was nothing to worry about and said i could ignore it. i took it to ford and i was told it happens a lot because the abs computer does that when it gets hot and if they put a new one on it may do the same thing. i have been driving that way ever since and not it is january and it is very cold the problem is still happening. the brakes still work but you just don't have abs. i think if you paid for a car that has abs as a safety feature it should be fixed the right way. i didn't replace the unit because they said it could still happen.*cw

My wife's 2001 ford windstar brake, abs and trac off (traction control) lights would come on a few minutes after she would drive the car. this was more prevalent during warmer weather than in the late fall or winter. basically something was malfunctioning which caused the abs braking and traction control system from working. i had recently brought her windstar to rye ford for a brake switch recall (probably related to this) and had this problem looked at. let me say that i purchased this vehicle for her and my family for the safety features that were now failing. the diagnosis was a bad abs module and a hydraulic valve. the cost for the parts from ford were $700 for the ca control, $1,000 for the valve asy modulator and $385 for the 166cmf (not sure what that is). labor came to $385 for a total of $2,110.00 dollars! in doing research i found this problem to be pretty common for the windstar. it has been documented by other ford windstar owners one of which has researched and figured out the cause of this malfunction. please go to:http://www.fordwindstarrecall.info/ and go to problem #2.. basically the module malfunctions because a metal plate expands when it warms up (which explains why this problem occurs during the warmer months) and touches the circuitry. there are pictures and evidence of this malfunction on the site. i believe ford is well aware of this issue and has ignored it because it is a big money maker for them. the part cost must be a huge profit for them which is why they ignore this issue. in addition many people i am sure purchased this vehicle as i did for the safety features of the abs and traction control. when ford puts out a vehicle with knowingly inferior parts that would compromise the operation and ultimately the safety to the driver and passengers then ford should be made to correct this situation at their expense and not at the expense of their customers. *tr

2001 ford windstar beginning in summer of 2009, abs and brake light sometimes lit on dashboard. dashboard controls either stopped working, going on and off and controls such as rpm, gas ind, speedometer either not working or going back and forth rapidly. the rpm indicator pin actually snapped off. now it is stuck and doesn't move at all. drivers side window stopped working, replaced motor. had ford dealer replace switch as indicated in recall 09s09 in november 2009. thought problem was fixed.as of jan 18, 2010, abs and brake lights come on after engine has warmed up. before i was notified of the recall i had full brake service on front and rear brakes in october 2009. also, not sure if related or not, i turned the car off at a red light and attempted tp restart it to turn off lights and the alternator died, had to replace. *tr

Regarding defect information report, ford recall 09s09, 49 cfr part 573, october 9, 2009, from the auto safety office, ford motor company, to the associate administrator for safety assurance nhtsa. service procedure states on windstars with a leaking switch the repair will also involve inspection and repair,if necessary, of the abs module connector. repairs will be completed at no charge to owners. my 2001 windstar was diagnosed with a faulty abs module connector on 11/09 and needs to be replaced. the service manager at my local ford dealer refuses to investigate this problem and states he has no knowledge of this potential complication as a result of the leaking switch. abs module connector has not been replaced. *tr

We purchased a 2001 windstar. after owning the pre-owned minivan for a few short months we started noticing that the abs, brake, and trac control lights would come one after we started driving. additionally when the lights are on we do not have abs braking or traction control available. i believe the abs braking system does not work as designed. it seems to happen less frequently during the winter about 60% of the time driving the vehicle. during the other 8 or 9 months the lights are on about 99% of the time. i believe that the website www.fordwindstarrecall.info in problem 2 accurately describes the problem i am having. i believe ford should recall this vehicle to fix this problem. thank you. *tr

Around march of 2008 the brake warning light and the abs warning light started coming on intermittently then about 2 months later they came on permanently and have not gone out. the antilock brakes do not work any more. a ford dealer diagnosed the problems as being a bad abs control module and a leaking speed control deactivation switch. symptoms are as follows. loss of brake fluid leaking brake deactivation switch brake light on dashboard trouble indicator brake light (red) dashboard trouble indicator abs brake light (yellow) speedometer shows 1/2 vehicle speed cruise control will not activate ford trouble code c1185 and others an on line search using key words 2000 ford windstar speedometer problems or 2001 ford windstar abs problems has found more descriptions of this failure then i could count. this web site ?http://www.fordwindstarrecall.info/? list 12 symptoms of the problem, i have 8 of them. they also make a reference to the nhtsa concerning this problem. nhtsa id #636312, march 01 2002 related investigations tying the leaking speed control deactivation switch and the failed abs control module http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/defect/results.cfm?action_number=ea08021&searchtype=quicksearch&summary=true nhtsa action number : ea08021 http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/defect/results.cfm?action_number=pe08035&searchtype=quicksearch&summary=true nhtsa action number : pe08035. *tr

The brake pressure differential deactivation switch located under the master cylinder developed a leak. my ford dealer told me this will cause a short and a fire!!!!!!!!. from what i hear this leak causes brake fluid to wick down two wires to the abs brake module. the fluid accumulates on the power connectors for the abs brake system which are powered by fuses 101 and 102 and are both 40 amp. the fluid attracts moisture, road salt and leads to a fire when the fluid and moisture act as conductor between the hot leads and ground. ford wants me to pay them $2000 to fix this. i hear you are looking into this fire issue. *tr

Abs warning light goes on intermittently on 2001 ford windstar. light goes off and stays off if motor is shut off and then re-started. sometimes it stays off after restarting van and other times it comes back on. i understand there are several complaints by concerned owners and that in some cases a fire hazard has been exposed or feared. please add my vehicle to those others who have submitted complaints. i understand a recall may be in the works. i intend to have the car inspected by a reliable mechanic soon. *tr

The abs brake light turns on my 2001 ford windstar after driving for at least 10 minutes. it stays on until i turn my engine off. when i turn the engine back on again, the light is off. it may or may not turn on again after i've driven the car for at least 10 minutes. this has just started happening about 10 days ago. i drive my car everyday but the light only came on, 4 occasions. one time about 10 days ago, and the last 3 times within these past 2 days. i am going to take the car to the repair shop to see what the problem is. the brakes seem to work fine. i had them replaced 2 years ago at a local ford dealership, which is no longer there since it has been closed down. i do not do alot of driving and have low mileage on my car. it is a 2001 but i bought it brand new in 2003. it was a leftover with no miles and came with a full 3 year warranty, which expired in august 2006. my car currently has 56,230 miles. i am concerned since i have 2 small children. *tr

In my ford windstar 2001 the yellow abs brake light and red brake light turns on after few minutes worm weather or after approximately 10 minutes in cold weather. looks like the fault is related to thermal expansion in the abs control module. the problem started in 2006 and is getting worse. *tr

I have a 2001 ford windstar, the brake and abs lights on intermittently. this saturday (09-19-2009) i made a short trip to the market, the vehicle ran good, when i arrived back home the family got into the van to go a soccer game and we noticed an odor of smoke. i unloaded the family from the van and noticed smoke coming from under the hood. i couldn't find the source of the smoke. i drove the van out of the garage and parked it in the street, in that short time i saw more smoke coming from under the hood. still could not see where it was coming from. after a few minutes the smoke went away. monday morning i towed the vehicle to my local mechanic, after an hour or so of isolating he discovered my abs module had caught fire and melted the connector and wire harness. i contacted ford motor company today (09-21-2009), and was told there are no recalls or safety defects concerning the abs module or any fire hazards. i have not done anything to correct this failure because i do not have $2000.00 to fix my van. *tr

Three months ago, i bought a 2001 ford windstar lx and about a week after the abs and the brake light started to turn on and off sporadically and i noticed that every time i pushed the brake pedal the pedal won't come back up as usual, i changed brake pads, checked the brake fluid level which was low but then everytime i use my van there's like a plastic or fluid burning smell that comes from underneath my van on the passenger side, my cruise control is not working and, i'm afraid something bad could happened in the future, i took my van to a brake shop and they told me there was a recall on the abs system on these vans, i checked fords website entered my vans vin # but there is no recall so looking in the internet i found a website that suggested that i should report that to nhtsa because there is an investigation already open and filling these report might help that investigation ending in a voluntary recall by ford. *tr

2001 ford windstar with the abs and the brake warning lights on. i had a leaking master cylinder. changed the master cylinder and the front disk brake pads. bled the brake lines. when the van is started the lights are not on, but as it is driven down the road these two lights will come on. the brakes don't have to be applied for this to happen. it could happen in the first 100ft. or maybe they will not come on until it has been driven several miles. i thought i had it fixed one time as i drove 65 miles without them coming on, then there they are. the van will stop and the brakes don't feel mushy. *tr

Brake pressure deactivation switch leaks, causing loss of brake fluid and illumination of brake warning light. replenished fluid, but before switch could be replaced it shorted burning out fuse #10. this caused loss of function of speedometer , tachometer, odometer and ac; abs and brake warning lights illuminated and overdrive off indicator flashes. replacing switch and fuse #10 resolved issue. research on the internet found that failure of this component has led to fires due to brake fluid leaking on other electrical components, though no additional evidence of damage was found in this case. *tr

I have a 2001 ford windstar se van where the brake, abs and traction control lights intermittently come on. when this happens, my understanding is that the abs and traction control systems will not function normally. to me this is a safety concern. i have had a mechanic look at the problem and run the computer codes but was unable to determine the cause. i will have to bring this vehicle to the ford dealer and spend a bunch of money to have them fix it i'm sure. in the meantime, i understand that some vehicles experiencing this problem have started on fire (mine hasn't) but this is a ticking time bomb as this is the car my wife and children ride in. i believe that ford should have to perform a recall to fix or replace the faulty part(s). *tr

On our 2001 ford windstar: abs deactivation switch on the brake master cylinder leaked to the point of blowing fuse #10. having replaced the fuse twice, i discovered the leak and replaced the switch. the brake fluid in the reservoir was very low, that being the consequence of the leak and the cry wolf indication on the brake light being on all the time. the connector to the switch was burned - i replaced it. the danger for us was the brake light on all the time was not mentally connected to a leak and loss of fluid because it went off when i replaced the fuse (until the third fuse failure -at that point, the brake light was legitimate but we were in cry wolf mode). the old parts are available for inspection. *tr

In my 2001 ford windstar the pressure actuated sensor attached directly below the master cylinder leaked all over everything below it(after replacing the master myself and everything in that area was clean i figured the problem was taken care of,but less than a week went by and my wife lost her brakes again .thankful that she had the smarts to take proper precautions.(that was the third time )so now that it was clean i could identify the source of the problem(the sensor leaking)i went everywhere to find the part (using the # off of the defunct original)no one had it.went to drew ford explaining the problem ,they said i would have to pay for the part(ok it was 25 bucks) the thing about it is that it was a part that was designed to accommodate the problem and of course a new part #(which is why i could not find it,it was recalled everywhere) added to that the brake and abs lights on the dash have been on for quite a time our mechanic couldn't fix the problem. when i replaced the part the lights went off for a day and a half but are back on constantly. my wife and kids are planning a trip and i wanted to make sure that there are going to be no problems. there is no more fluid leaking ,but i am concerned about what i have discovered on the internet. the best site is http://www.fordwindstarrecall.info. *tr

I have a 2001 ford windstar with abs, brake, cruise control problems. about 2 years ago i started to get the brake and abs lights illuminating. i took it to a local ford dealership and they said my abs module needed to be replaced. i asked for pricing and they said it would be $450 just for the part. i declined and asked them to disable the abs system. the dealership service representative informed me there was a recall on other ford vehicles with the same abs switch leaking and that there was a recall on those vehicles but not on the windstar. recently the vehicle developed a leak. i have been adding brake fluid on the average of a pint a week. i decided to do some research online to fix the problem and came across www.fordwindstarrecall.info which directed me to this site. i am extremely concerned this problem could start a fire and will be repairing the vehicle soon. *tr

While driving the van and approaching a stop, the brakes pedal went to the floor and the vehicle would not stop (had to use the emergency brake). we filled the master cylinder back up with fluid, and it worked for 1 day, until the fluid leaked out. then the same issue occurred, but because we were aware of some sort of brake problem, we drove much more cautiously and hesitantly. we stopped the van and drove it home very slowly. the master cylinder has developed a leak where it connects into what i believe is the power booster. in my short research, i have found that this is common, but typically results in fire or faulty dashboard lights. at this point, i have not fixed the vehicle, but will be fixing it today. the failure has not been fixed as of yet. *tr

I noticed a few months ago that my brake fluid was low. there was no visible leak. just recently my 2001 ford windstar had to be taken to the dealer. during an inspection it was noted that the brake switch was leaking brake fluid. i was told that this needed to be fixed immediately as it could lead to a fire. however, the dealer did not have the part in stock. i was advised not to drive the vehicle till the part could be fixed. it will be fixed this weekend and i plan to keep the old part. this is extremely concerning considering that the reason most people get this type of vehicle is because they have children. knowing that a vehicle could start on fire while children are being transported is extremely concerning to me. it is obvious from what i have found that this is a common problem that ford is aware of. *tr

For months my 2001 ford windstar has been showing my abs and brake light indicators. the first time it happened, i took it to the dealer because the manual indicated imminent brake failure. they told me it was my tire pressure and that my tires were worn and i needed 4 new ones. did that. lights still came on - they said there was nothing wrong with it. lights still kept coming on. they told me that i needed new pads and rotors - even though there was no sound of grinding brakes - but i did that too. and still my indicator lights kept coming on. they told me it was something about the panel that could be fixed for $700 if i wanted but it was probably not worth it and not to bother. and then, 2 days ago, my brakes failed. i was lucky. i was going slowly down a hill and i stopped the vehicle by slowing applying my emergency brake. they are now telling me that they still can't find anything wrong with it. i do not believe them. and i cannot safely drive this car anymore. *tr

After filing a serious complaint about an abs brake failure earlier this evening, i continued to research 'complaints on 2001 ford windstars on your website and was shocked at the number of complaints involving the abs system. the false warning lights tied to an 'electrical' problem that are referred to throughout the complaint section are identical to an ongoing problem that we have tried to address with our local dealership for the past two years! on august 26th, the abs failure that occurred in my vehicle while traveling on a highway could have resulted in a fatal accident for myself and my 9 year old son if it had occurred just seconds later. i would have passed the weigh station that allowed the vehicle to decelerate on an incline with the car in neutral and the emergency brake deployed. *tr

The brakes on my 2001 ford windstar mini-van failed on a highway. i was in the right hand lane and was able to exit the highway into a weigh station (that was fortunately on an incline) and by using the emergency brake and placing the car in neutral i came to a stop at which point i was able to turn the engine off and exit the vehicle with my 9 year old son. if any of the cars in front off me had slowed and/or tried to exit at the same time as me, i would have had to drive off the road or i would have been in an accident. *tr

My 2001 ford windstar abs and brake warning lights have come intermittent on and my cruise control is intermittent. searching the internet revealed that there is a problem with the speed control deactivation switch that is mounted on the front of the master cylinder. i have inspected my switch and it does have a fluid leak that is running down the wires. this has not caused any other problems yet. *tr

2001 ford windstar has abs warning light combined with emergency brake engaged light causing intermittent warnings. the vehicle has appx 145k miles on it currently. have been experiencing dash warning lights that warn me that my abs system is not working correctly. new brakes, inspection and cleaning. recently but problem persists. have not been able to determine the conditions that lead up the warning errors. based on research through the internet, conversations with local mechanics and other windstar owners, this problem is not only common but becoming anticipated. it's also my understanding that when the abs light is illuminated the abs system is non functional and my braking ability is compromised. various sources point to a fault in the monitoring system through the design of particular components and repair/replacement is running around $600. it seems clear there was a design flaw in the brake system that is leading to my family's safety being compromised by not having the abs functioning correctly. *tr

Scary issue: abs brakes started twice without any need and without warning causing the vehicle to roll forward while brakes were firmly applied. once at an intersection while stopped and once when stopping for a stop sign at normal speeds/conditions. additionally abs and brake lights come on simultaneously and intermittently mostly when warm out and more consistently when both warm out and vehicle is stopped after reaching full operating temperature and then restarted shortly after (i.e. stop at a store and then return to vehicle after a few minutes or while driving slowly on highway because of traffic after driving at highway normal speeds. stopping seems to allow more heat to collect to cause the problem as air does not cool the parts which may be the cause. suspect exactly what is described in http://www.fordwindstarrecall.info/ problem # 2. my cruise control also stopped working over a year ago and the repair was to change the switch in problem #1. i did not incur a fire but the switch did fail. *tr

Intermittent c1185 abs code is being caused by heat in the abs (anti-lock brake system) ecm (electronic control module) (2c219) module causing expansion of a large aluminum plate (heat sink) in the ecm which is attached to the ecm main circuit board at all points. the expansion occurs when the unit gets warm especially in the summer months and causes intermittent electrical connection in the unit because the fragile board is being stretched and malformed. this causes an intermittent abs light due to the failure of the abs relay. this is a manufacturing defect that has serious safety ramifications, and should be replaced by ford under warranty. *tr

Cruise control stopped working, and noticed intermittent abs/brake light. after researching, found that the brake pressure switch was leaking brake fluid through the connector. fluid had wicked into the cruise control module as well. even though this switch is the subject of failures and recalls on numerous models, the dealer refused to replace or apply the company designed fix to the vehicle. i am concerned that this issue has led to numerous vehicle fires, and that the company is not responding to this issue by replacing the switch, but only installing a fuse. repair charges were $210.00. *tr

 (1) i had various problems with the braking on the van starting about 4 months after i bought it with. nothing really lead up to the failures. (2) brakes would fail for no apparent reason. it was usually after i would hit a slight bump in the road while lightly applying the brakes. i would feel as the antilock brakes would kick on for no reason. the brakes would not recover until they were released and pressed again. several times i would have hit someone if they were in front of me. (3) i sent many complaints to ford, the dealerships, etc. there policy was if they could not reproduce the problem then they couldn't fix it. i could not reproduce the problem either. this would just happen out of the blue. i have had witness in the van when this happened. ford denied two dealers from working on the van (even though it was under warranty) because the dealer could not reproduce the problem. about 6 months ago i replaced the shocks and tires on the van. this problem has not happened since then. i did everything i could think of to have someone help me with this problem. talked to ford, dealers, filled out similar forms on auto safety websites, etc. i am truly disappointed that no one ever looked into this problem. if this is happening on other ford windstar's then there are some very serious safety issues that need to be investigated. *nm

I own a 2001 ford windstar van. it is used by my wife. last weekend, she came home from a local shopping trip and told me the a/c was not blowing cold anymore and the abs and brake light was illuminated. also the odometer and speedometer were not working. also the o/d light was blinking on and off. later in the evening i went and checked my fuses on the van and found the #10 fuse (15amp was burnt). i replaced the fuse with a new one and started the van. the a/c was now blowing very cold and the abs and brake light now was off. after leaving the van running for about 2 minutes, i noticed heavy smoke coming from the engine. i immediately turned off the engine and got a flashlight to see what was burning. i noticed near the master cylinder, a group of wires that had burned near the deactivation switch. i then came inside and searched the internet for this issue and came across a few blogs that stated the same problem. i then brought my vehicle in the next day to an authorized ford dealership that confirmed the problem as a faulty deactivation switch. i am very lucky that my van did not catch on fire while my wife has been using the van to bring my children to many different places. this is totally an unsafe matter and ford should be looking into a recall. what more can i do to make this happen?? *tr

Upon starting the 2001 ford windstar van tuesday morning several of the warning lights stayed on, including the brake and abs lights. the digital odometer display changed from numbers to dashes and the speedometer remained at 0 when driving. also, the air conditioning (a/c ) stopped working. i took it to the ford dealership for repair. it took them 2 days to find the problem which turned out to be a defective cruise control deactivation switch. the service dept. manager said we were fortunate that the van did not catch on fire. he told us that the switch had completely melted and had charred the surrounding wires. this problem is very similar to the problem which caused the massive ford recall in 2005, but ford claims that this has never been a problem in their minivans. the ford dealership did repair the damage at a cost of about $700. i did not think to ask at the time if i could have the burned switch. i would like this to go on record in case there are other vans out there with the same problem. perhaps the ford recall needs to be extended to include the windstars as well. i contacted ford by email and was told that there were currently no safety recalls involving this van.*ak

We purchased a 2001 ford windstar 04/2005, in 09/2005 while pulling into a parking spot the brakes failed & engine surged. summer of 2006, it happened a number of times with my wife driving, very similar to the first incident. we took it to our local repair shop who replaces a brake sensor. it happened again & they replaced another brake sensor. it happened again this time we took it to dealer in 07/2006 where the said they had to adjust the brake sensors and that everything was safe. it happened again, we took it back to dealer in august 2006 where they had it until 11/2006 telling us there was nothing wrong with the van. not feeling safe with the van took to another dealer who has had it 11/2006 till present 03/2007. i have talked with a number of mechanics out side ford who have seen the same thing including a ford sales woman who had it happen to her vehicle. i have been told it probably is something in the abs system & that it would be over $2000 to replace but no guarantee that this would correct the problem ( i don't have that kind of money to waste) . i also see a lot of similar complaints on this web site. this problem is a life safety issue & should be resolved by ford. we are paying & insuring a vehicle, for 9 months that is not safe to drive. help please!!!!!*jb

Brakes failed on three different occasions (repair dates: 3/22/02, 4/1/02 and 4/15/02). first, my wife noted the brake pedal was going all the way to the floor before there was any response. the dealership advised that this was normal. we insisted that it wasn't, until there lead technician found and replaced a faulty hcu. the second failure came while i was driving my wife and 6 month old baby from mo to va. while on the west virginia turn pike, the anti-lock brakes failed again and eventually the brakeing system failed all togoether by the time we reached our destination of suffolk virginia. barton ford, in suffolk va, replaced the hcu and the ecu and repaired a brake fluid leak. the third incident occurred while driving back to mo. once again the brakes did not respond normally. once back in o'fallon, mo. the dealership found a air bubble in the brake line and they reprogrammed the abs module. each brake failure also affected the traction control system and the speedometer. we have also had to have one window replaced, the drivers side sliding door adjusted, a seal inserted in the rear of the vehicle due to a recall item, and bolts tightened at the engine cradle mounts. recently, the fuel cap indicator light illuminated for a period of 5 days for unknown reasons and we are currently unable to fill the gas tank to its normal capacity. this vehicle is unsafe and hardly worth the $27,220 that we are paying for it.

To summarize, we bought a 2001 new ford windstar van on oct. 6 from courtesy ford. the brakes failed on oct. 8, causing an accident with slight damage. the van was towed to a ford dealership in wray, where they were unable to find a problem with the brakes. ford, through their corporate office, offered an extended warranty of 5 years. they also stated that they had sent an engineer from denver to wray who was also unable to find a problem with the brakes. i have a signed document from the service manager in wray stating that no one has come to look at the van. neither my wife nor i feel that this vehicle is safe to drive, especially since ford has lied to us regarding their diagnosis of the problem. we do not feel comfortable putting ourselves and/or our grandchildren at risk when there seems to be no explanation for why the brakes failed initially. i have much documentation and a chronology of the events that brought us to where we are today. the most frustrating part of this whole deal is ford's reluctance to even respond to our calls and letters. we simply want a vehicle that is free from defects. this is the first new vehicle that we have ever owned. your service comes highly recommended to us and we would appreciate any help you can offer. i can be contacted anytime at the above number or on my cell phone (970) 630-3328.*ak

Abs and brake warning dashboard lights come on intermittently and are only cleared when vehicle is restarted. brakes checked by dealership--not related to problem. dealer service dept stated they could not replicate diagnostic code and could not recommend remedy; however, they stated this is a common problem. safety issue is that this creates a lack of confidence in early warning system for brakes, potentially leading to driver ignoring a real brake failure. *tr

I recently purchased a used 2001 ford windstar. it began showing 3 lights on the dash. (the brake light abs light and check engine light) i will begin with the engine light. after reading many articles on the internet of people experiencing the same codes p0174 and p0171 i found the tsb. it called for the replacement of the vacuum line, isolator bolts, valve cover, and port seals. the abs and brake lights call for the replacement of the whole abs module. to fix both of these problems are very costly. and after researching, i have conlcuded that these problems are not isolated. due to the high price of labor and parts i have not been able to fix these problems. i think that the loss of abs on slippery roads and the loss of the engine due to the defective gasket parts can cause a major accident, and pose as a huge concern. please contact me with any updates...thankyou *tr

Abs and brake lights intermittently go on and off. after brakes were replaced the lights started this activity. after returning to the shop where brakes were replaced, they pulled the following codes off the computer, c1185,1194,1198,1210,1214,1242,1246,1250,1254 and u1262. a google search showed over 500 hits on one website for this activity. the shop says the brakes will work, but abs may or may not work as intended to. this is a safety risk to the general public. *tr

Numerous things have gone wrong since we bought the vehicle. items covered under warranty: electric seat stopped working twice, and transmission wouldn't shift when it was supposed to. items not covered under warranty: brakes replaced at 30,000+ miles-told was normal for them to wear out so quickly; rack and pinion replaced at around 55,000 miles; months after brakes replaced, brakes grind loudly when coming to a stop (brakes checked numerous times, but was told they were ok); abs brake light comes on and stays on after driving (not illuminated on start up, but comes on later); back dome light not secure-falls out; dome lights sometimes come on when braking; check engine light on for months, didn't have it checked, but turned off by itself; sliding door drags-rusted on vechicle frame.*ak

Tl*the contact owns a 2001 ford windstar. while driving at an unknown speed, the emergency brake and abs lights illuminated on the instrument panel. in addition, the speedometer and odometer gauges blanked out and other gauges began to sporadically flash simultaneously. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and a diagnostic was performed. the failure codes indicated that the braking system was faulty due to water or fluid entering the abs connector. brake fluid was found leaking onto the abs module as well as fluid build-up in the connector. the abs module and pump were replaced. the dealer also attempted to reprogram the abs module, but was unsuccesful. the vin was unable to be entered into the system. the current and failure mileages were less than 123,000.

On my 2001 ford windstar minivan, at about 62,500 miles on the odometer, the amber abs light and red brake light illuminated. was told by the dealer that it was a faulty hydraulic control unit that was leaking brake fluid on the abs module (estimated repair cost was about $1,100. i had previously researched this problem online, and have found entire forums of windstar owners dedicated to this problem. users had cited a fire hazard that is created by the leaking brake fluid on the abs electronic control unit (one owners van had caught fire due to this on a long trip). i asked about this at the dealership, and they confirmed that this could indeed be a fire hazard. i have pulled the fuses to de-energize the abs ecu, but because of that, am currently operating with no abs braking capability. the leaking fluid had also damaged the cruise control cutoff switch, so i had it repaired at the dealership.

*tr

My 2001 ford windstar developed a brake fluid leak from the speed control deactivation switch mounted on the master cylinder. this appears to have caused the speedometer and odometer to stop working. i plan to make repairs tonight, but i noticed that many other ford products are under a recall for this same problem, and i wanted to include the information that this problem has occurred on my windstar. it appears to be a potential fire hazard. *tr

This even has happened many a times, since '07 when i purchased the vehicle. the brake pedal seems to get stuck/or doesn't release all the way. i purchased the vehicle and was told it had new brakes; but now i need brakes.. in the beginning i had repairs done to it because the airbag light would not go off, and the cruise control would not turn on... the cruise control issue has started again, and i feel it is because the brake pedal is sticking. i can put my foot under it and raise it and most times this is the remedy for the situation. this brake pedal fault has now lead me to buy a portable power supply aka portable jumper cables, because of this happening and the brake pedal is staying pushed in far enough that the brake lights stay on and drain the battery dead... which has happened more then 10 times.. i was at an event last night when i stated i had to go make sure the brake pedal had not came back down and put the rear lights back on; on my vehicle; when the young man i as speaking to, stated our car does the same thing.. i then asked what kind is it, the result is we both drive ford windstar '01 vehicles.. i am sure that there are not only two cases of the malfunction... and yet i do not find here in the recall list. if there is another was to find out or if there is an recall for the function please inform me. *tr
