I have a 2001 ford windstar that was serviced for the safety recall 11s16,(11v030000 nhtsa campaign number) 04/11/2011. my vehicle was grounded do to significant subframe rot but it was deemed repairable by ford. on febuary 2, 2013 i noticed a 2 inch long crack/perforation on the top part of the sub-frame where the repair bracket was attached when i was rotating the tires. i took it back to the ford dealership and they said they were unable to help because it was repaired once and they wont pay to have it repaired again. im not sure if they missed this the first time it was fixed or what. i do know that according to ford's specs for determining if a subframe is repairable or not this crack would deem in non-repairable because its within the 2 inch mark from the tooling hole. now im just waiting for the subframe to completely crack while im driving down the road. the repair bracket that was supposed to solve the problem to begin with will not hold the subframe together if it completely cracks at the spot at which its located in. i aslo beleive that due to downward force on the subframe body mount and the fact where the u shaped bracket is sitting on the subframe that holds the bracket on the subframe, it is acting like a fulcrum point where the subframe is bending and cracking.

The rear axle, is rusted and snapped literally right in half while driving with my two young children! we were lucky enough not to have been seriously hurt or in an accident!

I took the van in for service and i was told the right front sway bar could not be re-attached because of excessive rust . my mechanic mentioned he thought there was a recall for this but i never received one. is there anything i can do about it now?

The issue is caused by heat in the abs (anti-lock brake system) ecm (electronic control module) (2c219) module causing expansion of a large aluminum plate (heat sink) in the ecm which is attached to the ecm main circuit board at all points. the expansion occurs when the unit gets warm especially in the summer months and causes intermittent electrical connection in the unit because the fragile board is being stretched and malformed. the code most commonly scanned by professional mechanics is code c1185. seen by us owners as a yellow abs brake light.

Abs, brake light and check engine light all on at the same time. vehicle shakes like it is going to cut off. despite numerous attempts at repairs, still does it as of today (2012)

While driving my windstar van the abs light came on and stayed on. at random times the brake light comes on and off. when both brake lights are on the cruise control doesn't work.

Since the beginning of 2011 the abs and the brake light came one. i have no idea why it comes on and stays one. i am afraid to go long distance because of this.

On sunday july 8th, 2012 i was driving my 2001 ford windstar i stopped at a light and as the light changed i began driving and then heard a loud noise, my wheels began to squeel and pull all over and my van came to a complete stop in the road and would not move.. the front passenger side wheel was turned outward but my wheel was straight. thank god i was not on an expressway or highway with all my kids in the vehicle.. i called a tow truck the driver inspected it and said something underneath the front frame had snapped off.. so today i had it towed into a ford dealer to find out it is a new recall how can these windstar vans have so many frame and axle issues and be safe to drive exspecially with all these brackets they are having to put on them for the recalls.. if i was on an expressway me and my son would of been hurt badly if not killed.. not to mention if i would of hit someone else i could of injured others too..i will never trust another windstar with my family this is crazy.. it is the subframe front lower control arm rear attaching flages completely broke/snapped off while i was driving down a basic 40 mph road..when it broke it messed up the underneath of my vehicle it ripped the drive shaft right out of the transmission.. and who knows what else is damaged now.. people need to know about this now before someone is seriously hurt..

My drivers side back door will not open from the inside or outside and my passenger side back door will not open from the inside. my (abs) light will not go off. there is a cracking noise under where my front tires are on both sides.

At a major intersection getting onto a highway our subframe gave out and we came to a screeching halt & a dead stop. the entire subframe under the passengers side of the van rotted and the wheel was up against the frame of the car. it could have caused a major accident. it cost us $1,500.00

Ford windstar seems to be a good vehicle at first. with age numerous problems continue to happen. service shops reguard problems as common for a ford windstar.i think ford ignores the problems. my husband and i are loyal ford owners, i don't know how much longer we will continue. currently the abs& brake lights are on. transmission leaked out all of the fluid while driving, had to rebuild trans. speedometer does'nt work properly when brake lights are on. engine light is on, numerous codes for this problem.

My '01 windstar had subframe repair in spring 2011... was said to be inspect subframe- did not pass but can be repaired. it was repaired at that time. last week, i had it into a mechanic for an unrelated problem where he had it on the lift. he told me that the subframe is completely rotted. i currently plan to return to ford dealer.

My 2001 ford windstar was repaired at valley ford in valley view ohio on 4/14/2011 under recall #20287. i had the van in for an unrelated matter on 12/07/2011 at that time i was informed by my mechanic that the sub-frame was rusted through. after contacting ford's national service center i took the van to valley ford. they inspected it and confirmed that the sub-frame was rusted through. they forwarded their finding to ford motor co. and ford motor co. was not willing to address the issue with the sub-frame. i believe this issue should have been addressed under the initial recall. since at least april of 2011 any time my children, myself, or anyone else rode in the vehicle it was subject to a catastrophic failure of the sub-frame which could have caused serious or fatal injury to the occupants or others.

I bought this car used 1 yr and 8 months ago .. haven't had any major problems with it. we recieved the recall for the rear axle, they checked it out was fine, we never recieved this last recall in 2011 but it may have helped if we did. on dec 2 i was pulling out of a school, was at a complete stop then started pulling out to take a right only going about 5 mph we heard a bang (something fell in the front end) then the car just took over, there was no stearing, the throttle stuck took us from 5 mph to about 30 mph in like 3 seconds crossing 4 lanes of traffic and just missing 2 vehicles, i crashed into a sign, 2 fences and a tree which made us stop, there was this awful sound that was getting faster and faster, we jumped out of the car because we thought it was going to blow up!!! everything that is in the front end is laying on the ground!! this is very dangerous and i am outraged that something like this could happen. if my husband and i hadnt gone anywhere that night, i would have had my 3 small children in it the next morning!! i am so thankful that we were not hurt (except for emotionaly) and that we also didnt hurt anyone else .. if those cars were 1 second earlier we would have smashed into those cars that were going about 50 mph .. wouldnt have a been a very good outcome!!! now waiting to see what will happen with the van, if it is fixed i will not get in it ever again!!

I was turning a corner and heard a loud bag, as if metal has snapped. i took the car to my ford dealer who said that the font subframe where the sway bar was attached had rusted through and that the sway bar was now not attached to the subframe and was banging. ford has fixed the frame on two different rust recalls under recall 11s16, but said this was not covered and would cost $2085.75 for the subframe plus labor and hardware. i asked if the car was safe to drive and received a non specific answer! if ford windstar has this much problem with there frame rusting why is this not covered??

Why does my abs and brake lights stay on even after having a ford dealership investigate the issue and tells me that there is nothing wrong. this has been an issue for years and seems like a problem waiting to happen. how am i supposed to drive comfurtably wondering if something is going to happen
04/24/2009
Before ford recalled for this problem, my rear axle broke in half at 65 mph on the highway resulting in loss of control and fumes filling the car from tires rubbing against wheel wells. in march of 2011 ford recalled and reinforced the subframe. inspection is now due on my vehicle and my mechanic will not pass it due to the installment of the recalled reinforcement. reportedly the installation was performed and attached to an equally as corroded part and failure is once again imminent. i returned the vehicle to the ford dealer that made the recall repair and was told that it is indeed safe. i am now stuck with a potential repair bill of $700.00 that will not fix the problem due to the model year parts having the same issues, or just driving the vehicle until failure occurs (again) and going back to ford with a lawsuit as i cannot in good conscience sell this vehicle to anyone else.

When i started my minivan it was an afternoon. i noticed that when i started driving the minivan it was like forcing it self then i would change the speed and it would sound different but it felt like it was heavy, i would change it to n and it still make this sound like if i was driving on a wet highway and engine was still loud. when i would speed more than 30 mph it just wouldn't respond as it did before. i purchased this minivan not to long ago -i would say close to a month-. when taking it for a test drive everything looked good, sounded ok -other than the shocks that needed to be replaced- and no lights were on. but after two days had gone by the previous owner said that the abs light would sometimes turn on and would turn off on its own. so, i had a mechanic inspect the minivan for the replacement of the shock wondering if this might take care of the problem, but after the work was done the abs and brake light started to turn on. went back to the mechanic because it came making weird sound on the left side so he told me that brake pads also needed to be replaced, so i thought to myself this would take care of the problem which it didn't happen. now after close to a month of owning this minivan and weather becoming much hotter i noticed this problem. i had a mechanic look at it again today and he suggested that a take it to a ford dealership to have the minivan inspected since he was also aware of a recall done on these types of vehicles. i am just afraid to keep on driving it because i can tell something is just not right and i feel that it's just going to brake down on me anytime soon. and since i have a baby i prefer not to drive or drive a long distance or even on a high speed.

2001 ford windstar sel my brake light and abs light are on frequently . . . i notice this during and after rain or when conditions are wet outside . . . also after i hit a bump in the road they seem to come on. my vehicle has been like this for at least a year and the dealership told me i needed new brake pads on the front. i replaced them and the problem continues to occur.

While idling at red light the rear quarter panel window on the driver's side of my 2001 ford windstar exploded. nothing struck the glass from inside or outside of the vehicle to trigger the explosion. glass flew into the interior of the vehicle covering the rear seat where my children are normally sitting. fortunately i had not yet picked them up from school. i have owned the vehicle for three years and to my knowldedge there were no cracks or other damage to the window prior to the explosion. the vehicle and windows are generally in good repair. i still do not know the cause of the explosion. these events occured on april 21, 2011 in boise, idaho.

In sept. 2009 i purchased a used 2001 ford windstar. the day after i got home the abs and brake light came on. i took it to a mechanic who informed me that this is a reoccuring problem for my van. my brake lights stay on sometimes and it drains my battery. this is all surrounding the abs and brake light issues. i have replaced rotors, brake shoes, brake pads, and many trips to my mechanic. i contacted ford about my issue and they said it isn't their problem and their is no recall on it. i have researched that i am not alone. please make ford look into this brake issue/abs.

I was driving my van down the road at about thirty five. heard a loud thunk and realized i was not accelerating anymore. the van stopped almost immediately after. called a tow truck because i thought it was the transmission. after evaluating the damage we realized that the frame had broken where the wheel stabilizer arm mounts to the frame on the passenger side. also my passenger drive shaft pulled out from the transmission. so in this repair it is going to take a sub frame. and the half shafts from transmission to wheel.

On two occasions we have had to have our axel replaced. this happened 6/18/2009 and 7/13/2010. the mileage was 156,000 and 171,210 respectively. the amount with towing came to $1,473.37. reimbursement check came 1/29/2011 for $978.80 with no explantion regarding the difference and both receipts returned. brought windstar to schultz ford in nanuet, ny and was told there were no cracks in the axel and i would be notified when replacement part was in. this was october. it is now going to be february and still no parts at the schultz ford in nanuet to ensure this axel doesn't crack. please help. it seems as if they are delaying hoping your car will no longer be in service to require this recall. how very dangerous to place money over safety.

Brought my van in for recall for rear axle. dealer showed me how front passenger side subframe had rusted to a point where it is now unsafe to drive. this could have been a problem if i was driving at the time. i know ford is now under investigation with the same vans and wanted to let you know i have one. the underside of my van is nearly rust free except for the subframe mounting point only on the passenger side.

Vehicle was pulling away from a stop sign when there was a loud thunk. the engine ran away, the steering became unresponsive, and the brakes stopped working. fortunately the vehicle was headed uphill and beached itself on a snow drift on the sidewalk. both rear attachment points for the engine subframe had rusted out and given way. the engine dropped until it was supported by the remainder of the frame and exhaust system dragging the road. if this had not happened at such a low speed, this could easily have been a deadly failure. as a long time engineer in the auto industry, i find this type of failure within the service life of the vehicle to be totally inexcusable. this form does not even have a listing for a frame failure. on a final note, i called ford about this failure. they informed me that the vehicle was out of warranty and they had no interest in investigating the failure - also inexcusable.

Power rear sliding doors. will open when driving!!! have two small children in the back and they have popped open at speeds in excess of 50 mph. took to mechanic who cleaned tracks that doors run on. fixed issue for two (2) days then issues returned. ford claims it is regular wear and tear, but the mechanic says there is no issue with vehicle parts...it's the exposed track getting dirty that can cause this issue!!!

On november 2nd of 2010, i was driving and noticed the vehicle was not steering properly and the wheel was not aliened as it should be, i then got under the vehicle as i was replacing an o2 sensor and noticed the extensive corrosion on the passenger side sub frame, i took a photo of it and showed my husband, he said in no way to drive that vehicle. i had it towed. the sub frame was so corroded by not driving in my opinion saved my 83 year old moms life, and mine. the drivers side is almost as bad, i have photos and the repair slip cost me 324.00 to weld to safety. this obviously is a major problem with these vehicles and needs to be addressed. i took over this vehicle november 30th of 2010, my mom owed it in new york since 2003.

I was told by my mechanic in october 2010 that i have a crack in the front subframe on the passenger side of the vehicle.
12/23/201083801
I was driving and turned into a parking lot and heard a thump, originally i thought i may have ran over something. the noise continued when turning as i drove home. on december 27, 2010 our vehicle was taken in for the rear axle recall and to diagnose the thump noise in the front passenger wheel. we were told by the ford dealership mechanic that the sub frame front passenger side was corroded and needed to be replaced ... $1900 service estimate!!

I have a ford windstar 2001 mini van and i live in new york state. on december 7th, 2010, as i was pulling left into a parking space i heard a loud cracking sound. (at first i thought i had rolled over a very large piece of ice) i again proceded to pull in, but my car would not move. (engine was still on) i got out and found 3 of my tires facing left and 1 facing right. i called aaa and was preparing to have it towed to a mechanic. when the driver/mechanic from aaa, informed me that the lower control arm (drive arm) had tore away from the main frame (front axel) at the front of the car, and had tore away all of the driving mechanigisms and would need a welder first , not a mechanic . so i had him take it to a local welder. he was able to find some clean metal to weld it back on and then recommeded i take it to a mechanic to finish up with everything else that was needed. the mechanic told me that it would need a cv joint and the linkage for the transmission in order to have it working again. i have never had any issues with the engine, or transmission prior to this day. and the car has very little rust on it's body. so i would have never thought to look underneath for any. and because it was always maintained well, a mechanic was hardly ever under her to see if there was any possible damage either. she has less than 75,000 miles on her so i never expected this to occur. i have filed a report with ford after the incident but all they could say was thank you and they'll make a not of it. and that the rear axel was on recall....but if that was the case, why not the front axel too???

2001 ford winstar. consumer writes regarding recall *tgw the consumer stated she has called several dealers to have the recall performed. however, due to the large volume of recalls, dealers are only servicing vehicles that were purchased at their dealership. the dealership where she purchased her vehicle from is no longer a ford dealership. consumer did not reference recall. *jb

I bought a 2001 ford winstar in april 2005. by august, the abs brake came on. i promptly took it to al packer ford and they charged me $545.oo to replace the ba control plus labor. within two years (in august) the light came on again. i researched and found that many families are having a problem. it goes on and off frequently, and i am very concerned about a fire. i can not afford to pay for this piece every two years, especially when it is a deffective part. thank you

Occurence: 12 october 2010. travelling i-95 washington,dc/suitland, md. vehicle: ford windstar, 2001. speed : 60-65 mph. traffic : dense. failure of defective part : rear axcle snapped in two parts while traveling on smooth highway, northbound. explosive sound , lots of smoke, extreme consternation/fear of heart attack experienced by my wife and i ( my wife has a dangerous heart condition ihss) at occurence. i immediatly turned on hazard flashers. managed to manuever across several lanes of traffic to get to highway shoulder safely!! thank god for the alert fellow travelers behind us!!! if we were hit by any 18-wheelers on the highway, i wouldn't be writing this complaint now!!! concern for our safety was shown to us by fellow travelers; particularly, md traffic safety person, who should be commended by his superiors for his professional and understanding actions!! he looked at the damage and said that he had never seen anything like it before; and he said that we were licky to be alive!!! van was transported by professionals to the nearest ford dealership where i first became aware that a recall notice was in force for my vehical!!! at this point, i became greatly disturbed that i had no previous notification of this dangerous condition and that my wife, grand children, etal were traveling in potential rolling coffin! in my opinion, this seems to be criminal; particul;arly if greater profit motives might be involved! i certainly hope that inferior materials were not used in this regard!! i was inforrmed that my van would have to remain at the ford dealership until ford motor company decides how i will be provided with a safe vehicle , since no replacement axles were available. (nb ; i have no idea whatever other damage exists as a result of this awful failure! i certainly don't want a duplicate axle replacement to replay this horrific catastrophy! in my wife's delicate condition, i cannot expect her to travel in this unsafe vehicle! justice!!!

(nb ; i have no idea whatever other damage exists as a result of this awful failure! i certainly don't want a duplicate axle replacement to replay this horrific catastrophy! in my wife's delicate condition, i cannot expect her to travel in this unsafe vehicle! justice!!!

I have a 2001 windstar, purchased at fines ford bolton on, for the past year the brake light and the abs brake light tend to be activated after the car warms up ( 5 min) during the summer. however during the winter months the problem seems to dissapear. the colder the outdoor temperature the less likely the light seem to go on. the van has only 95 000 km , and drives approximately 10-15 km on a daily total commute. during the past year we ( my wife and i) have noticed that a burning smell seems to eminate from the van immediately when parked. since we park the van in a garage the smell is more noticeable then. this past july we brought the van in to service the recall to fix the scds sensor. although for a week the abs and brake lights were not activated, the problem has resurfaced thereafter. it seems this recall only served to possibly protect a fire but not solve the real problem with the abs lights

2001 ford windstar with a cracked rear axle. no letter has been received to address this matter. our van made creaking noises and we had heard through the media that a recall was beginning. the dealership and the ford customer relations dept. will not give us a definte answer as to when we can expect a resolution. we were given a 30 day rental and 14 days have passed and no answers. we are given $30 a day for a rental car by ford but must pay taxes totaling $3.30 a day. the voucher is $38 daily with $8 used for insurance if needed. we pay through our private insurance company for such coverage. why cannot ford use the additiional $8 a day to cover our taxes? the explanation for the recall was to be no expense to the owner for correcting the problem. we did not create this problem and bought our van in good faith of the ford motor co. reputation. this certainly doesn't make for good customer relatiions. no definate deadline for repairs and giving up the van to use a 4 door car has been very inconvenient. i am requesting a deadline be established and for ford to use the additiional $8 we are not using but was allocated for coverage of this problem to be covered for those customers who already have insurance for rental cars under their private insurance carrier.

I own a 2001 ford windstar and approximately four months ago, the abs light and brake light illuminated, the o/d off light began flashing, the speedometer died and the odometer cleared. i no longer have heat in the front of the vehicle , nor air conditioning. approximately a week or so ago, my husband had just returned from an errand and was in the house when he heard a pop and went outside to investigate. he saw smoke coming from underneath the vehicle and immediately removed fuses from the vehicle.

2001 ford windstar abs/brake dashboard lights come on while driving and stay on. when car is turned off, brake lights remain on. brake pedal needs to be pumped and pulled for lights to turn off. problem started approximately two years ago, was intermittent, but is now, as of 4 months ago, happening every time the car is driven. a friend's windstar is doing the same thing, and when researching on the internet, it appears to be a fairly common defect that should be subject to a recall by ford.

Sept 4, 2010, approx 5 pm on interstate 80 in heavy traffic in altoona, iowa my 2001 ford windstars rear axle snapped in 2 and we mirraculously cut across several lanes of traffic onto the shoulder. i truly thought this was going to be the end of our lives. we were not injured. the highway patrol got us off the interstate and my van is now sitting in a junk yard. the axle is completely severed and my tires are lying flat. we could have gotten killed because ford neglected to inform me of this life threatening defect. waiting unitl sept 27 to start sending recal notices may be too late to some victims. god took the wheel this time. i will not ever drive that van again. my children are traumatized as so am i.

Ford windstar 2001 - problems with abs/break light: coming on and off intermittently.sometimes it will stay on for a long time, then goes off. then will come back. replacing break shoes, drums, break puds, bleading cylinders, did not solve the problem. it cost me over then $500 in repairs but problem stil there.

Customer brought vehicle in for abs light on, found scds switch to be leaking brake fluid and replaced with a motorcraft updated switch. after service while vehicle was still in shop bay with ignition off, vehical abs unit started on fire. we then removed all power from vehical and found that after removing the abs modual connector brake fluid was found inside of abs modual, and the connector was melted. we then called ford dealership to see if the were any recalls concerning this vehical and the abs modual and or switch, and were told that there were none. we have since found many arcticals online concerening this matter, and yet no recall ? another half hour and the doors would have been closed for the night, we would have lost our shop, all vehicals inside. please make them stand behind this clear and evident problem.

Frequent and persistent deactivation of the abs system in 2001 ford winstar. this problem has come and gone on the van and there are recalls to cover the fire risk. the abs system will through an alarm when the car is driven. this is an intermittent alarm the comes and goes it the cooler months and if no most of the time in the summer months. when the abs system is disengaged the breaking distance is much longer when compromised road conditions. we were involved in a near miss when driving in snow and ice. this prompted further investigation and it seems that this is a persistent problem for abs systems on the winstar van.
