Odi has received 134 consumer complaints, 285 manufacturer complaints, and 137 manufacturer warranty claims alleging incidents of engine compartment fire in model year (my) 1995 thru 2003 ford windstar vehicles.two of the odi complaints allege the fires caused structural damage to the complainant's home.of the 134 odi complaints, 36 allege the fire occurred while the vehicle was parked, 72 allege the fire occurred while the vehicle was running and 26 of the complaints do not specify if the vehicle was running or not.further review of the odi complaints shows that 72 allege that the speed control deactivation switch (scds) caused the fire and 10 allege that the scds leaked brake fluid on to the abs module resulting in the fire.there were 52 that did not identify a cause or that identified miscellaneous other causes.odi has also received 89 complaints ( not counted in this resume) alleging that the scds developed a brake fluid leak.thirteen of these complaints say that the leak at the scds resulted in braked fluid reaching the abs module.this pe has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea) to further evaluate the cause of the fires and assess the scope, frequency, and safety consequences of the alleged defect.

My 2002 ford windstar has had many parts tested. they all seem to test good. battery , alternator to name a few. when driving the van hazards come on ( without turning them on ) the radio shuts off, the heat turns off and power is lost as if it's the alternator. abs lights come on and then the dash panel lights up like a christmas tree.. oh then the vehicle dies and won't start , clicks like it's the alternator or battery but they test fine.. after searching many blogs this seems to be a big issue with many mechanics that don't know what it is.. this needs to be fixed it's a pain and thank god for aaa but really should i have to use my aaa all the time/ this particular vehicle spent 6 months in the ford garage in 2010. now what when you buy something you think it will be good for you and your family and that you can use it as a primary car. we have lost days from work, money and money for trying different parts now what??? *tr

After purchasing from a dealer in oct of 2010 the abs light, check traction control light, brake light and air bag light started coming on intermittently. had the vehicle serviced in mi for the axle recall. was without the vehicle and had loaner car for 2 months. after getting vehicle back the lights were on more consistently the dealership noted this but did not offer any reason found for this. by summer of 2011 these lights were staying on almost constantly and this continued for a year, after investigating this issue online and seeing that other owners have invested hundreds of dollars trying to get the lights to go off and stay off only to have them keep coming back on we have decided to file a complaint as this issue is not a simple fix and obviously is happening in hundreds of vehicles. our problem has progressed to where the speedometer and odometer go wildly up and down while driving at highway speeds and we are never sure of our speed. the lights on the dash go out and the power to door locks, radio and a/c power is lost as well as the blinkers for lane changes. this vehicle is very unsafe but we need it as we have 5 children and can not afford to buy a new one. the power window on passenger side as well as the power sliding doors do not work. when this issue happens if their happened to be an electrical fire because of it, we would be unable to exit the vehicle because the doors are locked and the knobs on the interior of this model are flush into the door when the vehicle is locked and can not be manually pulled up. with children, this is a very serious safety concern. please please investigate this issue with the ford windstar. i have also contacted for with my complaint and they only would say there are no recalls on this issue right now but to save my receipts should i try to get it fixed in case one is issued in the future. *tr

Tl- the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. the contact stated that while at a traffic stop, the vehicle erroneously accelerated. the vehicle began to function normally several moments later. the contact also stated that the brake, abs and over drive off warning lights illuminated intermittently. the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic where it was determined that the master cylinder failed and was leaking brake fluid onto the electrical components. the vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not contacted about the failure. the failure mileage was 150,000. kmj

Battery light comes on periodically - driving home my radio shut off, abs brake light came on, dash lights dimmed then shut off, head lights began flashing, heater may have stopped (not sure, was focusing on the next road to pull off on), could not accelerate. i pulled over, shut off the van and waited. a few minutes later it turned over like nothing was wrong. this also happened to me about a month and a half ago. *tr

Vehicle abs light has been on consistently since purchasing vehicle from carhop/ uac. reported the problem to the warranty department only to be told any electrical is not under their warranty! this was reported within a week or so of purchasing the vehicle used for 8500$. since have replaced all four tires for brakes, ( top of the line brakes, not cheap ones) light still remains on after several trips to a shop. anti-lock braking system still inoperable and almost caused crash 12-7-2012 when attempting to stop on a lightly icy road. several other electrical issues have been going on with the car as well. it blows brand new fuses, rated higher than what the slot calls for, the low tire pressure light stays on, despite taking the van to a tire specialist and the correct amount of air placed in each tire. also the crankshaft positioner has caused the vehicle not to start. the air bag light has stayed on and went off after disconnecting the battery. replacing bulbs on the van quit often. at the point of stopping the payments and letting the car company just repo the van. it is a safety hazard on the roads and especially in snowy minnesota where a functionable vehicle is needed in order not to cause a accident! *tr

My abs light is on and will not go off and speedometer wouldn't work properly when the weather was really warm, and just september 21st 2012 my car was not able to switch out of park, and on oct.18th 2012 my brake light stop working all together. i have research this problem and there is a recall out on ford windstar 1998-2003 with the same problems. but when i called ford 10/22/12 they check my vin and stated that there was not a recall on my car only ford windstar van with parts made in virginia. i don't understand why my car cant be repair at ford expense when there is evidence that there i s a problem with the car. *tr

We parked the van at walmart and when we started it back up the abs and brake lights came on and stayed on until we shut down and restarted 2 times. it started doing it sporadically. we bought this van used, so we took it back to the dealership and they ran a diagnostic and said that nothing was showing up and just reset the system. the lights had stayed off until sunday, october 14th; they are now starting to come back on sporadically. *tr

Neighbor came by early and told me the brake lights were on. i went out to inspect but didn't see them on. got in the car an hour later and noticed smoke and horrible electrical smell. i checked the entire car, but found nothing, when i went to start it, the battery was dead. had my friend give me a jump, hooked up cables and sat in the windstar for a minute, i then heard crackling and immediately smelled smoke. under closer examination i found it was the center, upper brake light assembly completely melted, bulbs were contorted. had the assembly replaced with a ford part from dealer, three days later it happened again, so i removed bulbs before it completely melted. the center third brake light does not shut off, even when car is off, 12, strong volts to bulb socket, on or off! left and right brake lights work fine...for now. i have no doubt my car would have completely been destroyed, had it not been for the battery going dead. *tr

Brake and abs lights turn on at same time without an apparent cause, this happens after driving van 5 or less minutes at a low speed. once the engine is turned off and restarted again, both lights remain off, and again, after driving the van for a short distance brake and abs lights come on again. *tr

About 2 years ago i have noticed that the abs and brake light would come on sometimes now after driving a few miles they come on constantly now. i spoke to a ford service advisor and was told it would cost me over $600.00 to repair and that there was a recall only for certain states. this does not seem fair to other ford owners to have to pay for something that ford has a default on and seems to be a problem with in a lot of these vehicles. i can not afford this repair and i'm sure most people can not afford. please look into this. ## vin passed ## ford, windstar lx, 2002 ## *tr

Approximately a week ago, the #10, 15 amp fuse was blown. replaced it with an approved fuse and blew right after i started van up. i had noticed some liquid on garage floor about 2 days before the fuse blew, the brake light on dashboard was lit up. i checked the brake fluid level and it was very low. when i added fluid, i noticed there appeared to be a leak of fluid on the front, underside of the master brake cylinder. i had a friend who is a mechanic look at it and he told me the master cylinder could be bad, but looked like the pressure switch was where the leak was originating. upon further inspection, he noticed there was a wire harness that was soaked in brake fluid and beneath another one was wet. he attempted to clean both of them and replaced fuses, but after using the brakes the first time(going out of the driveway) i heard a pop and the fuse was blown again. this particular fuse controls the odometer, speedometer, the abs light on dashboard. the amount of fluid going onto the engine is a good probability of a fire starting when the leaking brake fluid is on the hot engine. this seems to be an increasing problem and needs to be recalled. *tr

*tr

For the past several years my van has has intermittent problems with the brake lights on dash appearing while driving the car at various speeds. once i stop the car and turn it off the lights will usually disappear but sometimes will come back within minutes of restarting car. this tends to happen during warmer times of year versus winter. also i have noticed a problem with brakes even right after getting them replaced. the mechanic says there is nothing wrong with the brakes?? around the same time this started to happen my cruise control stopped working. i had recieved a notice from ford about cruise control recall but when i called the local dealer and told them that my cruise control was not working and i was wondering if it had something to do with recall they said no, that was not the problem. *tr

The warning light for brakes and abs kept coming on and there was not an actual problem with the brakes. *tr

I keep having intermittent problems with dashboard warning lights: yellow abs light, yellow trac off light, and red brake light. please note: on approx july 17, 2012 i took my windstar to have this problem checked and have ford recall 09s09 service done. the quick-service manager refused to check the abs control module connecter even after telling them three times that it is required as part of the recall. i was told by a service advisor trainee, to bring vehicle back if problem persists and take to regular service dept. i took the vehicle back to same ford dealership for resolution of this problem and was told there is a $92.00 diagnostic fee. i agreed to fee to see if the repair they recommend is same as repair which should have been covered under recall, and left van there on august 14, 2012. *tr

Right after i had the recall for 3 different recall the front end, brakes, rear axle completed my abs light, brake light & track off lights all light up on my dash all at the same time & stay on. i have a photo of this. after i turn van off for awhile (it needs to cool down) they go off. i called ford several times about this and they said it had nothing to do with their brake recall or front end recalls if i wanted to pay them to check it out i can bring it in. amazing that i never had any problems with my van until ford started fixing the recalled items. *tr

About 2 plus years ago, my van started having an electrical malfunction. shortly after starting the vehicle and sometimes in the middle of driving, the computer would beep and flash the message check traction control. along with this, the abs and e-brake lights would come on, and also the trac off light. i could clear the message from the computer by hitting reset, but the warning lights would stay on until i shut the vehicle off. it happens almost daily now, especially when it's humid and hot outside. about 3 weeks ago, the speedometer and tachometer started to stick or not move. sometimes, they go up to 30-40mph, then stop working. other times, they just don't move at all. the problem also affects the accuracy of the odometer and gas gauge. the vehicle can be traveling at 70mph, but be reading 40mph, and then the odometer is marking miles traveled according to 40mph. so, now my odometer needs to be reset as well. i never know when this is going to happen, and being a mother of two children and pregnant with #3, i need my vehicle to be safe and reliable. i found a website that has recall information, and i'm not the only one experiencing this issue with their windstar. i was already part of the rear axle and subframe recall, and that was scary enough to know my vehicle could have fallen apart while i was driving it. there is a possibility of electrical fire with this, as one of the probable and likely causes of this is the wires are self-grounding on some metal part in the engine or behind the dash. if any fluids leaked on these exposed and self-grounding wires, one spark could set it off. please make sure this problem is addressed in a timely manner, as there are several of these vehicles on our nation's roads. *tr

At times when is col,d the abs and brake light is off while driving, when it gets hot the abs and brake light turns on and the abs fails to work. code c1185 abs power relay output circuit failure. i got to a stop sign and the road was wet and the van skidded , the abs did not work. no one was hurt and i have seen all the complaints that ford owners are having. i don't know if my 2002 ford windstar had all the other recalls done, like the brake pressure differential deactivation switch (scds) and the rear frame welds that are breaking up on the chassis of many ford owners. i would like to verify what has been done to my ford windstar that i bought two months ago. i just had the inner and outer tie rod ends done along with the sway bar links at the front suspension.

At drive-through, radio suddenly quit, and the abs and brake lights came on. right turn signal came on, vehicle began to pulsate and surge. pulled over and shut van off, would not restart, lights and hazards began flashing and would not turn off. retried ignition, lights and hazards went off, van completely died. informed to replace battery, had battery tested, it was fine. replaced battery, followed instructions to reset computer after battery replacement. had to drive van 10 miles to complete, during which abs and brake light came on, headlights quit (after dark) then began flashing. turn signal came on to signal right turn on its own. just before returning home, headlights quit entirely, and airbag light came on. parked van, let it idle, and the tachometer surged from 500rpms to 3000rpms. seems to fit descriptions others are saying about abs and speed control module underneath master cylinder getting soaked with brake fluid. *tr

Purchased this vehicle in january 2012 and have had nothing but problems with it. according to ford all recalls have been done on this vehicle but here is a list of the issues with the van: abs light comes on, check engine light comes on, van has no cruise control at all, and last friday i could not put the van in gear. after the ford dealership repaired the solenoid for the van now all of a sudden there is currently no rear break lights. this van is less than safe to be on the road and have seen that some of the recalls would have solved the speed control issue but the ford factory will not answer any of my questions. take a look online and you will see thousands of people with the same issues we are having and it was brought to the attention of ford that we are having the same issues as thousands of other people so this is beyond a problematic vehicle.the vehicle is currently sitting at the local ford dealer while they try and figure out what is wrong with the light system. this vehicle has been in the shop twice since we have owned it and this is costing us hundreds (so far) to fix issues that everyone with this vehicle is having. the latest issues have led to us being without a vehicle for almost a week and we have a disabled child in the home and this is unacceptable.

We had our ford windstar brakes done all the way around and my abs and emergency brake light and traction light come on and off. the cruise control works sometimes. ford dealer in my town wont check it out without a diagnostic fee even thou a recall is said to be issued for the same complaints

Brake, abs brake, cruise control, and speedometer/odometer electrical problems my dash lights are on and off all the time went to 3 mechanic they all checked my brakes, abs and could not find a problem it goes on whenever it wants stays on for weeks then comes back on while driving this has been doing for over a year. i even put stickers over the lights that i can see while driving. i still think there is a electrical wiring problem it is very annoying. i can not afford to get another vehicle . i see there are a lot of complaint about same problem my niece has one does the same thing and my brother in law in west virginia his is doing it too so i really thing ford needs to check into this before someones van catches fire or hurt some one.

Every since i purchased my '02 windstar, i have had problems with the abs and brakes. i've had the brakes fixed numerous times and both lights still comes on while i'm driving. i had a brake fluid leak from the rear. my dvd and stereo both short- circuited on a month or two after they were installed. sometimes if i come to a light to stop for a while, when the light turns green, i'll try to give it some gas but it becomes real hesitant and takes a while to pick up speed. the drivers behind me would start to get frustrated with me holding up traffic. also, when i cut the ac on it takes power away from my vehicle and it threatens to cut off, so i don't turn it on. i also have to replace two oxygen sensors on it. i believe that my abs module is bad as well. i feel that i am putting more money into it than it's worth. please help me.

Brake lights come on randomly and stay on for some time until the brake pedal has been cycled through 5 or 6 times then lights go off for a while then comes back on again. smell of burning plastic or wires permeates the vehicle when the lights have been on for any length of time.

The abs light and the brake warning lights come on sometimes and stay on a long time. when the abs light is on the abs brakes do not work; it reverts back to regular brakes. i am trying to sell the car but prospects do not buy because the light comes on un-expectedly.

Speedometer not working accurately (ocassionally speedometer will work than stops, which indicates defective part). ford says speedometer and gear needs to be replaced now. prior to that they said computer needed to be reprogrammed because of tire size.. cruise control did not work but was fixed by ford via recall notice due to leaking speed control deactivation swith (scds). as i understand the dealer would also inspect the abs control module connector and repair as necessary. abs and brake light are on all of the time which is a result abs control module failure.

Vehicle was parked and someone noticed that smoke was coming from under the hood. an electrical fire had started from windshield wiper motor assembly and burnt through motor terminal guide. both parts had to be replaced. if this problem was not caught early extensive fire damage would have occurred.

The abs warning light and brake warning light on. resets after car cools down then lights will illuminate after driving and temperature increases. when lights are illuminated braking distance suddenly increases and brake pedal feels soft. had the brake system serviced and flushed with new brake fluid and it did not solve the issue of the abs and brake warning lights coming on, or the increased braking distance. all the brake pads have been checked and are in serviceable condition. front calipers and rear brake drum clynders have been checked and all are working correctly. wheel speed senors have been cleaned and checked with a meter and all four are working correctly. the recalls for the brake pressure differential deactivation switch was done in 2010 and there is no evidence of fluid leaking at this time. suspect problem with abs electronic control module.

1st incident happened while driving at higway speeds. abs and brake light illuminated until car was turned off. lights now come on randomly. i took my vehicle to a ford dealership on aug. 31 2002 for recall on front and rear axles. they installed shackles on suspension and said that everything was fine. after i came home with vehicle, i noticed a clunking sound coming from the r/f wheel area and my overdrive off dash light starts flashing randomly until car is turned off. concerning the abs issue, i took my vehicle to an independent garage and they told me i needed to replace the abs control module, then he told me that they did the exact same repair on another 02' windstar earlier that week and the repair would cost $700-$800 dollars. coincidence????

While driving at normal speeds the abs, brake and trac lights come on and stay on. the van was stopped and when restarted, the lights were off. this has repeated almost every day and continues until today. there are no codes and there seams to be no effect on the van (except maybe the anti lock brakes not working).

While driving down my hill, my brake light came on. now my abs light comes on with my brake light. brake fluid is present, brakes are almost a year old. for over a year now, my van after it being turned on and off (errands, shopping etc), it does not want to start. once it does start, as i turn the wheel while in park, it stalls. now that my brake and abs lights come on, as i turn the wheel it wants to stall while driving. when i am turning my vehicle off, i turn the key down very slow and all the way down, that seemed to only help it restart a few times. i had my vehicle at the ford dealer for the recall in 2010 dealing with the cruise control issues. my od light has been off for over a year now as well. while driving my vehicle, when i am stopped, i notice a white colored smoke coming out from under the hood, and no one can find where it is coming from, especially happens when it is damp or raining out, and engine temp is normal.(i can not take my van to an auto car wash due to the fact it starts shaking, smoking and won't run or stay started when the under carriage is being sprayed) fuel pump, starter and ignition coil are fine. has new plugs and wires.

We were driving down the highway at 75 mph i smelled smoke coming from the engine compartment.told the wife and kids i was pulling over and to get ready to bail out of van as soon as i stopped and to stay clear of it. when everyone was out and safe i opened the hood and saw a fire under the master brake cylinder.got water bottles from inside van and a rag and put the fire out.there was brake fluid on the switch below the brake master cylinder on the wires to a switch underneath .later i cleaned the mess cut the wires that had caught fire the ones that went to the switch under the master brake cylinder and wrapped them so they wouldn't ground out.continued on home for another 1 1/2 hrs. when i got home i took the switch that had burned under the master brake cylinder off and put a bolt in it's place.i thru out the switch.i haven't replaced the switch i also lost my cruise control since the fire.i didn't think anything about it until today when i was looking up some info for my van and read that this is a problem .

Abs and brake lights coming on for no apparent reason. had recall service on cruise control and the warning lights for the abs and brake lights have been coming on intermittently since that service was done. talked with the local ford service department and they are aware of this problem. said that the previous recall on the cruise control didn't have anything to do with my warning lights for abs and brakes (but they have had more issues with this problem than the cruise control recall). if i remember the correctly, the cruise control recall - it had something to do with brake fluid contact and potential for fire, my cruise was shorted out and not working - must have been from brake fluid. i am thinking that this flaw has something to do with electrical components connected from the brake and abs system to the warning lights being shorted out in a similar way; it is just a guess, i am sure that the real mechanics know what is going on.... this is a safety issue and ford needs to recall this design flaw; the warning device is not working as designed. i am sure that the $1,600 to fix the problem is an issue for ford. sometimes the lights turn on when i start the vehicle, sometimes i may be driving and they will turn on, at times the warning lights do not come on at all. the brakes are not effected from what i can tell and my fluid levels are normal. i hope that my brakes don't really experience a problem.

Tl-the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. the contact stated that heat would not come out through the vents in the front of the vehicle even though the heat was functioning properly in the rear. in addition, heat would not come through the defrost vents, allowing the front windshield to become foggy and reduce visibility. the contact also stated that when the failures began, a clicking noise would emit from behind the dashboard. the vehicle was not taken to have the failure diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 130,000. sm.

I purchased a 2002 ford windstar from genoa ford genoa ohio...with the abs light and brake light on...the salseman said that we have the car priced low because it will need brakes...we purchased the brakes and still had the problem...we then had the master cylinder replaced the next day 3 days later as we where driving the van the abs and brake light turned on and the van was not able to be started so it was towed for the second time...the day before this we had it at tireman in northwood to get radiator flushed...and new tires when we pulled away the van lost all power and then the battery was replaced...so today after this problem happened the mechanic tells us we need an alternator. in the mean time i have searhed online and found that recall #09s09 deals with electrical issues as in the abs the scds the cruise control etc... so this issue obviously has not been stopped with the recall being profprmed on my vehicle at genoa ford on oct 19, 2009( as the mechanic chris told me on the phone)...so i have come here to file this complaint.

I am the owner of a 2002 ford windstar. i bought the vehicle with 16,000 miles on it and it now has 104,000. i am current on all of the recalls issued by ford as of june 2011. my abs light, and brake light have been coming on randomly throughout the course of driving during the day for the past 4 years. i live in florida. it is on always throughout the summer and less frequent during the winter months. i have had the computer updated with the latest software by ford 3 years ago when the problem started occurring... did nothing to help. i have taken it to the ford dealership and local mechanic. each have looked at it and have told me different things. the dealer suggested i needed a new electronic control module. ( i did the recall suggested by ford and have the new wire harness on the van. it has done nothing to solve the problem of the abs light and brake light coming on) he says because of the heat it warms up and causes intermittent electrical connection in the unit because the fragile board is being stretched and malformed. the code most commonly scanned by professional mechanics is code c1185. the local mechanic (not ford) test drove the van and found all kinds of abs codes coming up and sinks failing. i left it at his shop and the next morning he drove it again and the lights were off. he said it is a computer issue because everything doesn't just fail all at once and then no lights come on the next day in the a.m. later that day when i took it home and it started to heat up in the summer time here in florida the lights came back on indicating to me that i had no anti-lock brakes!!!!! ford needs to recall this part because it is a safety issue that we as customers have paid for and expect. please look into this issue and do something!

2002 ford windstar, 153028 miles sat because of rear axle broke close to home. got recall notice from ford for axle. contacted country roads ford in new martinsville wv. they had van for couple months waiting for axle. axle was replaced but no other recalls were done physically. the mechanic signed that all was done. i got in van, which sat for a couple weeks, attempted to stop at lite and no brakes. pedal went to floor. pumped brakes an grabbed e-brake to stop inches from the car in front of me. took it home after filling master cylinder with fluitd. found that it was leaking thru the switch itself. brake fluid trailed to different connectors.took it back to ford. they did the recall for the brake sensor and the sub frame. 11s16. now the engines reves to 2000 rpm when the steering wheel is turned and when its shifted from gear to gear at any given moment. revs up at any time which is a hazard to anyone in or near the vehicle when operating at lites, in store parking areas. the wiring harness installed was manufactered 06-27-2008. part no. bw7t14a411a35nb ca. diagonistic codes change when the battery terminals are removed, then replaced for resetting computer. the cruise control works when it wants to. shuts off during driving. the uncontrolable engine revs is the most serious of the problems. called country roads ford again and they said it wasnt caused by anything they did for the recalls and that only 3 pretained to my vehicle. having a different shop look at it.

2002 ford windstar - at times the speedometer becomes stuck at half the speed i am traveling - gets stuck around 25 mph even though i am going 60 mph. the abs light comes on for apparently no reason - defect in electrical system? i have been told by my mechanic that there is nothing wrong with abs. according to best ford - there has been no recall for these issues - other people apparently having sames issues according to info posted online.

We own a 2002 ford windstar and while driving it the air conditioning and speed odometer stop working, the abs and the ods light stay on. smoke came from under the hood. we took it to coastal ford on 09-09-2010 with the recall information off the internet. they said they could only replace the harness and a switch. we still have the same problem and sometime smell burning wires. this isn't safe for anyone. there are several complaints on the internet with same problems. we don't know why they ahven't the solved problems. does someone has to get burned up before actions are taken? we would lid like this to be taken care of as soon as possible. thank you,

I took my van in to do the recalls. well they said they saw nothing wrong with the most last 2 recent recalls. 2010 and 2011 dealing with front end and rear end. my question is if it doesn't look broken they don't have to fix it? i thought these parts were manufactured wrong, right? now how often should i take my van in to be inspected? at any given moment it could break and my 4 kids and i could go tumbling down the highway. they did do the speed odometer (which i'm watching closely for abs/brake light to come on) and in process for child safety attachments. the anderson ford dealership in cleveland tx will not do the other 2 recalls because it does not look broken, is this right? anyways abs/brake light remains on and off all the time on my ford windstar. will have it check for brake fluid leakage running down to components.

After reading all these complaints, i am literally in shock! not to mention scared to death not only for my child's lives, but for myself/husband and other close family member's & friends that have also traveled with us past/present! this is ashame, that this many windstars have all had this many/relative problems! i for one could not believe how every review from so many states were all linked! as i read many of these reviews/complaints i honestly had to ask myself have i posted here before? -as you can tell my windstar is yet another victim added to the list. i took my van in yesterday to a ford dealer for the recalls, picked it up today. i was given a inspection report card with different systems/components/tire/brake wear etc... 3 boxes along side of each green, yellow & red with the similar meaning as a stop light. green=ok, yellow=may require future attention & red=immediate attention. it was brought to my attention that my tires box were checked yellow for all 4. this seemed odd to me considering i have a reciept that shows it has'nt been a month since i had 2 brand new goodyears put on the front! however, i do agree with the remark regarding the back. but this concerned me as to what type of inspection my van had went under.?. and need i say before i got home from a 25 minute drive from the ford dealer my abs & brake lights are back on, surprise! i'm going to contact ford in the morning, in regards of hopefully getting a helpful answer/explanation or at least a another appointment scheduled for a second opinion regarding my recall inspection!

In my 2002 windstar the abs and brake lights come on while driving and will go off only to come back on another time while driving. in 2009 we had the safety recall taken care of, but it did not resolve the issue. now i am noticing while i have the van running, heat and radio on, the radio and clock lights will go on and off. also, the back doors do not always unlock and it will take several times of pressing the power door locks to unlock before they will unlock. i am fearful there will be an issue and i will need to get my daughter out quickly and won't be able to because of the door lock issue.

Abs, brake and t/c lights all come on at the same time. this happens off and on for the past couple of months. had car hooked up to find the failure code and was told there were too many, so they cleared the codes and said to bring it back if the lights come on again. they have come on again and i notice they sometimes will come on with accelerated speed.

After having the 2002 windstar serviced at a ford dealership for a recall related to abs failure and possible fire we noticed a burning plastic smell. the smell lasted the entire day after picking the windstar up at the dealers. we immediately called the service dept to report the smell and they stated the burning smell could not be related to the service they performed. the abs and brake light came on later that day and has now been on intermittently ever since. we have noticed an increased stopping distance in wet weather. we have now had the windstar in and had it diagnosed and the codes state that all 4 abs wheel speed sensors have failed. that would include the brand new wheel speed sensors that have been replaced in an effort to get the abs and brake lights to go out. when the codes are cleared the abs light will stay off anywhere from minutes to hours depending on each reset. it is my belief that the brake problem is related to the recall.

Serious intermittent electrical issues with 2002 ford windstar. break and abs light have been illuminated intermittently in the instrument cluster panel since purchasing the car in october 2007. then in march 2010, after smelling electrical burning, the battery light began intermittently illuminating and go off when gas is applied for a few moments. assuming possible alternator or battery issue, changed out the two components. break and abs light and battery again began illuminating, and door locks began not working. ford dealer performed 2009 abs recall correction, but electrical issues remained. then all electrical components stopped while i was driving with my children on a busy street. lost power steering, doors all locked, breaks went out, oddly the interior lights blinked on and off like an airplane emergency lighting would during a crash landing. unable to unlock back door to remove my toddler from the car seat, and had to pray no one would slam me from behind while i crawled into the backseat and unlatched him (because back lights were not lit) then exited the car. had to be jumped to restart. changed 3 batteries and 4 alternators (2 were motor craft) since march 2010. one alternator blew within moments after the car was started after changing it. mechanic mentioned he noticed an arc flash prior to its blowing. replaced all new wires going into and out of the alternator, all new battery cables. replaced serpentine belt and several fuses. battery light still comes on. took van to ford dealership, where they witnessed and acknowledged the illuminated battery light, hooked van up to electrical test equipment, and found nothing ($100). hooked it up to the regular diagnostics test equipment (another $100) tried to sell me an intake manifold for $500 including labor (i didn

Abs brake light comes on when the car gets hot. when the car is cold there is no problem with the abs system. the air bag light came on at about 75,000 miles, cost to replace circuit board 675 dollars. the engine intake manifold warped which turned on the engine repair light, cost 950 dollars to repair.

Tl-the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. while driving 40 mph the abs brake light illuminated on the dashboard. the vehicle has been taken to the dealer 5 to six times for the failure. the dealer replaced the brake pads and advised her that the problem was electrical. the electrical failure causes the radio to short out, all the interior lights to short. the vehicle leaks oil and power steering fluid. she stated per the dealer the vehicle needs an axle and rack pinion which affects the steering column. the vehicle has not been repaired. the vehicle was purchased used in 2007 and the failure started as soon as she purchased the vehicle. the contact reference recall 10v385000, suspension:rear:axle:non-powered axle assembly and stated she received this recall recently. the vehicle has not been repaired. the failure mileage was unknown the current mileage was 116,840. vwb

In september 2009 the mechanic at the dealer where i bought my windstar told me the abs module is bad and that i need a new one and have to go to the ford dealer directly and pay around $800.00 and have it reset by their computer. this has cost me lots of money because i already spent $600.00 on rear brakes because of not knowing this is a common problem with ford windstar.also, immediately after purchasing this vehicle in 2007, the locks on the van don't work. sometimes it locks by remote and sometimes the locks all work, but, the driver side. this is a pain. now, i have a problem with the 'check engine' light coming on and i have had various mechanics try to reset the light and it will come back on again and again! i have spent hundreds on this van to have it in shape, but always something arises. despite the cruise control recall, i have not had any problem with it and use it all the time, but will have to have it done. i wish ford to fix all the problems this type of van has and so i won't have to spend hundreds, again, or i will have to get rid of it, which is a shame because i really love the tv, even though the screen give me problems and the vcr no longer works.

My brakes are working fine. but my abs light keeps coming on for the past year. prior to this, i had my oxygen sensor replaced. there is no definite movement that preceeds the light coming on, it can happen when i hit a bump, or when i simply drive along. it is becoming more and more recurrent. i was told it would be over $1,000 to replace, although the brakes were recently replaced, this did not remedy the problem.

Sometimes the parking brake, abs, and trac off lights will come on and stay on until the car is shut off. this will sometimes happen 2 or 3 times a day, and sometimes not happen for several days. brake fluid levels are fine. mechanic found codes c1185, c1194, c1198, c1210, c1214, c1242, c1246, c1250, c1254, c1404, u1260, and u1261. he cleared the codes for me and 2 days later the lights started coming on again. from info online, this could be related to the recall of the speed control system modification (i have not had that repair done yet)

The antilock brake light went on in my 2002 ford windstar. i took it to the ford dealer, and they said it was the left front speed sensor. about 6 months later, the lights went on again - intermittently. they went on more and more as the weather got hotter, mostly when the engine is warm. i took it to a different repair shop to analyze the codes. it has too many error codes to list, which the mechanic says is an indication of an ecu failure. this shouldn't be happenning! i am driving around with three kids in this vehicle, with no antilock brakes. it is going to be scary when winter comes and the snow and ice driving begins. i have to drive it like this though, because this is an expensive repair ( over $1,000)!!! the antilock brake lights have been on now for over 6 months straight.

Abs and brake lamp still on after recall for 2002 ford windstar
07/11/201084000
The morning of july 11, 2010, the abs control module on our 2002 windstar suffered an internal fire due to brake fluid leaked from the bad switch, resulting in a loss of proper brake function and no readings from the speedometer, tachometer, and odometer (as well as multiple warning lights). this occurred several weeks after having had the brake pressure deactivation switch recall performed (nhtsa campaign id 09v399000, action number ea08021). the local ford dealership which had performed the initial recall work refused to repair or replace the module under the recall or as a warranty claim, stating that it was not part of the recall, nor was it apparently damaged at the time of the brake switch repair. i subsequently removed, opened and examined the control module (8/28/2010), and found blackened brake fluid present inside the module at the connector pins. i also found evidence of significant burning around the pins at the connections to the printed circuit board. this evidence included the blackened fluid, severe discoloration, and lifted traces, all of which are clearly apparent in photos of the module interior. luckily, it appears that an internal trace burned through and interrupted the fault current prior to the failure becoming a runaway fire event. at this time the vehicle has not been repaired, and is sitting idle. i have kept the failed control module for examination as necessary.

I have a 2002 ford windstar minivan. i took the van to the local dealership to have my traction control checked because the lights(abs, brakes, trac off) on the dash come on and stay on. this vehicle does not have any current recall orders and the dealership confirmed that. i had them check my van to find out why the lights are staying on. this is what i was told, they said that my hydraulic control unit (hcu)is leaking fluid onto my ecu (abs control module computer) shorting the system out. they told me the way to fix this problem is to replace the ecu(abs control module computer) which cost $2000. how is replacing the computer going to fix the leak? according to records the recall 09s09 (scds) was repaired on this vehicle. this concerns me because their is still fluid(brake) leaking onto a electronic componet which poses as a fire hazard. according to complaints i have read this is a common concern for many other windstar owners. the abs issues are directly related to the leaking scds(recall 09s09). i am going to personally check the leak to verify the proximity of the location of the leak to the scds. i feel this may be a issue ford has to address. please note i have sent a memo to them first, and i hope to receive a response. i will not hold my breath though.

I was driving home from work when the low brake fluid light came on. i was headed to pull over when the dashboard went crazy. said tht the abs was bad, right brake light needed to be checked, traction control error, check transmission, mileage was gone only --------- listed, a/c stopped working, said fuel data computer error, speedometer was out. i am taking it to ford tomorrow to have the vehicle speed control replace and i believe this is what is causing this problem. the brake fluid may be leaking on everything because i did small a burning smell

I have a 2002 ford windstar. there was a ford recall #09s09b to correct the abs/brake light issue. i went to a ford dealership in my area on 05/27/10 to have the matter corrected but after i left the dealership, i still have the same problem. i am driving this vehicle with fear since the problem has not been corrected and it can result in a fire.

The abs light on the dashboard of my 2002 ford windstar mini-van is on all the time. the ford dealer told me that i would have to replace the abs module for a price of $750.00 plus labor to correct this. then i received a letter from ford stating a recall involving the cruise control mechanism was needed to make my windstar safe from a possible fire. i had ford do the no-cost fix which amounted to a jumper wire with a fusible-link. however, this did not fix the existing abs problem. now, my speedometer is not functioning properly. i have read up on this problem and find that many windstar mini-vans manufactured between 1999 and 2003 have had similar problems and they all are related to the abs system. i believe that ford should completely fix these problems and owners should not have to pay an amount exceeding $1000.00 to do so. these problems were apparently inherent in these model years and repairs or replacements should be the responsibility of ford, not the vehicle owners. i can still drive my windstar but will have to have the speedometer problem fixed at a minimum (if that is possible singularly). not having the abs problem fixed may lead to further complications, but i cannot afford these costly repairs at this time.

Smoke and terrible plastic burning smell inside the cabin of my 2002 ford windstar van. taking my van in to a repair shop in february, i had to have the abs module and cruise control module and all associated wiring replaced, due to some evident fluid leaking of some kind (i believe they said break fluid). my cost was $1,030.98, and the repair shop said this could happen again (????). they thought this issue may warrant a recall. i do have my parts they replaced. *tr

Own a 2002 ford windstar. for about 2 yrs. we have had problems with the brake light/abs light coming on intermittently. then we experienced problems with fuses blowing. we would replace them and sometimes they would last 10 min. sometimes 2 weeks. now besides the interior lights not working, the radio, clock, cd player are all not working and replacing fuses doesn't help. there is always an odor of burning plastic and at times smoke comes out from under the hood, but no fire. i have received the recall for the speed control deactivation switch, yet when i called ford to schedule an appt. they told me the electrical problem was something different. i don't believe them a since supposedly brake fluid is leaking and destroying wires. i just want this documented as i do not have the money for a large repair bill. *tr

This is an update to odi number 10278659. the cruise control actuator switch was identified as leaking brake fluid by my independant auto repair shop. they replaced the cruise control actuator switch part number yf1z 9c888 ab at a cost of $34.56 for parts and $22.50 for labor. they also replaced the wiring harness that connects to the switch. after this was done, the cruise control started to work consistently again. the abs light and brake warning light still come on intermittently. sometimes i have noticed they go on after i hit a bump. once they go on, they remain on for the duration of the journey (until the car is turned off). *tr

I have a 2002 ford windstar, i went to park on labor day this year and parked my van. a few hours later, i went to van and tried to use my remote to get in and it would not work. once i got directly on the van i smelled an odor that smelt like burnt rubber that was really strong. i got in van with my key and started the van. it was very hot that day so i went to roll down the power windows and they didn't work. i then went to turn on the air conditioning and it didn't work. i then looked at my dash and realized i had loss all power; nothing was work, odometer, temperature gauge, radio, headlights etc. i thought i just blew a fuse and stayed at the park. when i went home several hours later i still smelled odor but told my husband i would go to shop in morning before work to have my mechanic look at it. that morning i went to shop and they said it was not a fuse and after several hours of them doing visual and computer diagnostics they found that the abs system caught fire and started burning into my gas line. they said we were very lucky van didn't total catch on fire. they ended replacing the whole abs unit under the van and had to replace all wires that had burnt and rewire everything. repair is almost 900.00 dollars. they van gave no warnings that something like this would happen. i feel very scarred to continue driving this van, even with repair being done because i feel like it can happen again and next time we may not be so lucky. i am still paying on the van and stuck. i hope ford does something before someone loses their life. i have not picked up van yet and am considering telling car dealer to pick it up at shop and taking repo on my credit. *tr

I have had a continual brake fluid leak on this vehicle. in addition, while driving the vehicle on 08/06/2009, the abs light and brake light suddenly came on, and the speedometer, odometer, and air conditioning stopped working. my mechanic replaced the #10 fuse, which fixed the problem for one day, then the fuse blew again. the ford trouble code c1185 came up on the diagnostic computer, and my mechanic suggested i replace the abs module. looking at the switch in question, it is covered in brake fluid. i now have no air conditioning, speedometer, odometer, or abs system functionality, along with a chronic brake fluid leak. please investigate this and make ford recall either the defective abs module, the brake deactivation switch, and the leaky master cylinder! hopefully, all three of these items will be included in a recall! *tr

While driving home one night headlights, and signal lights stopped working (lights in back continued to function) odometer stopped illuminating, and message panel displayed inconsistently. abs light came on randomly at times, and eventually, the speedometer stopped working. after several hours of labor tracking down the problem, the g.e.m. module was replaced (at great cost). after replacing the g.e.m. module, it became apparent that the instrument cluster was bad and needs to be replaced. unfortunately, these parts are on backorder and our only car has now been in the shop for more than two weeks and nobody can give us any idea when the part will be available and when the car will be repaired. furthermore, the ford dealership where our car sits in an undrivable state (the repair department told us that there is a risk of fire if we were to drive it) told us that there are three other windstars there waiting for the same part, and agreed with us (off the books) that considering the quantity of problems they are seeing with the instrument cluster there should have been a recall. *tr

Brake lights come on when vehicle is off and they will stay on after you remove your foot from the pedal. we have had the brake pedal switch replaced 2 times already and it keeps happening. if the lights come on in the middle of the night (has happened several times), the van will not start in the morning. this remains an ongoing problem which the repair shop can not fix and recommended that we file this report. this has been going on for the last couple of years. the van sometimes smells hot inside if we catch it before the battery goes dead. i'm not sure what to put for the approximate incident date so i will put today's date since it did it again today. *tr

Ford windstar 2002. cruise control only engages intermittently. when cruise control is on, it will dis-engage abruptly for no reason. yellow abs dash light and red brake warning dash light go on intermittently (simultaneously). after they go on, they stay on until the car is turned off. the abs system appears to still work correctly even when the yellow abs light is on and the red brake light is on (although there is no way for the driver to tell if the abs system and brake system are working correctly or not when the warning lights are on). my local ford dealership diagnosed that the ecm control module needs to be replaced. this is an expensive electronic component with no moving parts, and there is no reason that this board should be failing. this is a common problem with 2002 ford windstar models. i believe ford should be required to offer free diagnosis and repair for any problems related to ecm control modules for this model year. i first noticed the problem around october 2008 as the weather turned colder. this is consistent with a theory that the ecm board is sensitive to temperature changes, which affects the correct working of the cruise control and abs systems. the cruise control mostly did not work during the winter 2008-2009. as warmer temperatures arrived in spring 2009, the cruise control started to work intermittently again. sometimes it engages correctly, sometimes i push the set button repeatedly and finally it engages, sometimes i push the set button repeatedly and it will not engage. when it is engaged, it will dis-engage abruptly for no reason. i suspect sometimes it dis-engages because the car hit a bump in the road - but frequently it dis-engages with no bump in the road. having the cruise control dis-engage abruptly for no reason is a safety issue and could easily result in an accident. having the abs system not work correctly (due to the ecm module) is a safety issue and could easily result in an accident. *tr

Purchased a 2002 windstar xl from a dealer feb 2009. all happened in a 12 week period. engine , abs, and brake lights came on as i left the lot from dealer. went to have checked out and i was told i had a misfire in #5 plug and replaced intake manifold gaskets, new plugs, wires, oil changed. had an oil leak 2 days later and went back and plug in oil pan replaced. engine light stayed off 1 week and then started smelling antifreeze through a/c vents. heater core is bad in it too so i had the heater core bypassed as a temporary fix. engine light, abs light & brake light was off for 2 hours then came back on. found the cruise control deactivation switch was unplugged and plugged it in and then it blew a relay fuse in the box next to the battery. replaced and left it unplugged. this controls the gauges on instrument panel, a/c, and cruise control. i replaced the cruise control deactivation switch and it burned the wires when engine was started. overheating of wires caused the melting of wires. i had hood open so stopped engine before wires ignited. *tr

My brake pressure deactivation switch has failed and is allowing brake fluid to leak from my master cylinder onto my abs system. my car is a 2002 ford windstar van. i noticed it about 3 weeks ago when i had to add fluid to my master cylinder (the brake light on the dash came on). this fixed the problem for a few days but then the light came on again. i have been adding fluid, but the bad switch allows it to leak out every couple of days. to be safe, i am replacing the switch and the master cylinder. i will have the old switch available. *tr

Abs and brake lights keep coming on. cruise control not working. speedometer, odometer and airconditioning have also stopped working. due to short in the cruise control disable switch aka brake pressure differential deactivation switch located under the master cylinder caused from brake fluid leaking onto it. this in turn blew the #10 fuse. this switch is covered with brake fluid and could start a fire at any time. i have stopped driving it until i can replace the switch and clean off the brake fluid. *tr

We have a 2002 windstar with 165k miles. the abs /brake light has intermittently come off and on for the last 2 years. i noticed that last year my cruise control began to periodically work. on wednesday july 8th i started the van and noticed white smoke pouring from the hood. i immediately shut the vehicle off and traced the smoke to the brake pressure deactivation switch. i didn't know what it was until i read this article www.fordwindstarrecall.info this was extremely helpful and saved me time on estimating the problem. the switch had burned and the plastic switch was dripping the melted fire plastic into my motor! *tr

We own a ford windstar 2002 van. the following are occurring: lost brake fluid, brake light, speedometer and odometer stopped working, abs brake light, check engine light, cruise control will not activate and this is caused by leak in the brake pressure differential deactivation switch. the lights on the dashboard are permanent and i will need to take van in to the ford dealer for repairs. since this is a serious and dangerous matter caused by a defective part, we hope that they will recall this part and cover the costs for the parts and labor. we are disappointed with ford. *tr

My 2002 ford windstar instrument cluster has illuminated the red brakelight yellow abs lights and the trac off symbol sporadically since last summer this is consistent with information i found in a current nhtsa investigation. i have also read about other windstar owners with similar issues. sadly, they have had disastrous outcomes (vehicle fires and structure fires). there is no sign of brake fluid below brake fluid reservoir. lights come on and do not always reappear right away when the engine is turned back on. seems to be linked with exterior temperature - on days that are warm, the lights illuminate more frequently. on days that are cold, they are less likely to be illuminated. did not happen at all during this past winter. as i stated, this has been going on for quite some time (almost a year) first noticed it last summer (2008) with 105,000 miles on the vehicle. currently 135,000 miles on odometer. i have not parked the vehicle in the garage since last summer fearing a the possibility of a fire. *tr

My wife was driving our 2002 ford windstar and noticed smoke coming from under the hood and it smelled electrical. my 19 year old son noticed the smoke coming from the wires under the master cylinder. they called me and i suggested removing the wires from the brake pressure switch. he did but they were extremely hot. i did some online research to find a problem with windstar pressure switches and wiring catching fire. i am glad a fire didn't start, but it could have. i would like to see ford include 2002 windstars in their recall. *tr

2002 ford windstar: the brake pressure differential deactivation switch (2b264) located under the master cylinder (behind the air filter) over time developed a leak that lead to a fire. the leaky switch at worst causes a fire at the point where it connects to the abs ecm module. the car was off. i was standing nearby when a big pop and a great deal of smoke started coming out from under the car. when i looked under the car, there was a small fire. i used a fire extinguisher to put the fire out. *tr

Vehicle became having intermittent abs light and brake light activation while driving. this began in 2007. i had it checked and the dealer advised it was a control module problem not covered under warranty. i checked on line to get a better story, which appears to have been reported many times. over the past 2 months march/april 2009 the problem appeared to become worst. finally cruise control became intermittent and then quit. i checked brake pressure switch found fluid in and around the switch which is one of the reported problems with the windstar. the abs system and cruise control are currently inop. there are no blown fuses. *tr

I have a 2002 ford windstar that the abs light goes on and off when driving. i have had it checked when i have had my car in for service and have been told that there are no related codes for this. i was told by mechanic that they do not know why the light goes on and off. i was checking a website and found many other complaints from people who have the same problem with their ford vehicles. i am now having a problem with the front electric module that stopped working. i don't know if this is related to the abs light or not but it seems that ford's have problems with their electrical systems. it will cost me approximately $800 to replace the fem module in order for my driver side window to work again. i don't know how much it would cost to replace the abs module but it sounds as if other ford owners did that and had the same problem. i have had my brakes checked by a mechanic and they look good (don't need to be replaced). i am concerned that this abs light keeps coming on and off and if the brakes will malfunction. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. while driving 60 mph, the contact noticed that the abs, parking brake, and traction control indicators were illuminated on the instrument panel. the vehicle had to be shut off and restarted for the indicators to dim. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, but they could not duplicate or determine the cause of the failure. the contact called the manufacturer and was informed that there were no current recalls for the failure; therefore, no compensation would be provided. the failure mileage was 60,000 and current mileage was 70,200.

2002 ford windstar blew fuse #10 disabling speedometer, cruise control, abs system, odometer, a/c, defrost control. the fuse failure was due to a leak in the brake master cylinder which shorted the brake deactivation switch terminals. my vehicle fogged up so bad i could hardly see to drive home. i searched the internet for a clue to the problem and later located the wet switch plug. i went to the ford dealership to buy a new switch and asked if there was a recall on it. he said no but, when a fellow parts man went to get one from the bin, he asked the same question, stating that there were 67 repair kits in the bin.....this let me know that they have acknowledged that there is a problem with this and should have issued a recall to all owners of affected vehicles. *tr

While partially parked into the garage, after driving for one hour and sitting for half of an hour, smoke was observed from under van. smoke stopped and noticed abs warning light on. brakes worked, but cruise control did not. dealer installed/ replaced: 1) brake kit/ brake pressure deactivation switch, 2) ecm control module, 3) valve asy. 4) two wiring harnesses (one was a used from a ford escape, due to the availability and cost.), 5) two fuses, 6) brake fluid and misc. shop supplies. it was at the dealer for 11 days, cost for repairs was $1831. drove it 5 miles and check engine light came on. the dealer stated this was not related to original problem. it was the dpfe sensor: $331 to repair. normally the van is garaged, luckily something was in the way of fully pulling it into the garage and the fire went away quickly. dealer stated it was a catastrophic failure and that the deactivation switch had nothing to due with the valve asy. going bad/leaking causing a fire. *tr

Ford windstar cruise control switch shorted out. that caused the brake fluid to leak on the electrical system and shorted it out. the dealer said it is a fire hazard and other fords had been recalled but not the ford windstar. now this is costing us 2500.00 to get fixed. my parents windstar is starting the same thing and my dad is handicap so if it catches fire there may not be enough time to get him out please recall the windstar also before something bad happens. thank you *tr

I have a 2002 ford windstar lx. just this past january the lights have started to turn on. my abs light, engine light, brake system light. there are 12-13 codes that show up for my brakes when diagnosed on the computer. i have new brakes all around, new rotors, new drums and when i go to stop the car squeals like a bus and grinds as though i have no brake pads at all. shop says the only place i can go to get that fixed is the dealer where it will cost me about $1500 to fix. who has that kind of money laying around? my engine light goes on because of supposedly some module inside the engine. that was estimated at $350+ to get fixed. the module supposedly is the reason why when the car is diagnosed on the computer, that it shows i have two bad o2 sensors. all i can say is wow!!! these windstars are pure junk!!! *tr

Our anti-lock brakes failed on our 2002 ford windstar. a defective switch had leaked brake fluid into an engine wiring harness causing the anti-lock brake system to fail. we were told by the ford dealer that the repair would be about $1,500, we were no longer under warranty, and that the vehicle could catch on fire at any time. this included when the vehicle was not running and parked in the garage. the service writer also stated that he could not believe that ford had not recalled the windstar as the same failure of the anti-lock system on the pick-ups had been. *tr

The brake pressure differential deactivation switch (2b264) located under the master cylinder (behind the air filter) over time develops a leak. this causes a short and a fuse trip, fuse #10 if the engine is on. this leak also causes brake fluid to wick down two wires to the abs brake module (2c219). the fluid accumulates on the (always on) power connectors for the abs brake system which are powered by fuses 101 and 102 and are both 40 amp. the fluid attracts moisture, road salt and leads to a fire when the fluid and moisture act as conductor between the hot leads and ground. this switch will cause cruise control problems, speedometer, odometer and abs brake system problems. *tr

2002 ford windstar cruise control, odometer, a/c temp. control stopped working; abs light remains on. the van is leaking brake fluid. i found online that this is a common problem within windstar owners. a contaminated brake pressure differential deactivation switch is the probable cause of this problem and in my opinion ford should be responsible for this defect. *tr

I have a 2002 ford windstar that we purchased 2 yrs ago, ...morning after delivery battery was dead, took back to dealer and they checked it out and said should be fine. occasionally still dies and has to be charged, alternator & battery check out fine. the most dangerous problem is that the abs light is on and abs doesn't work properly. we continuously have to add brake fluid (at least once a month) and can not find any leaks on the ground. had the vehicle in for service on several occasions can not diagnose. the dealership hooked vehicle up to machine to read code and can not get any readings from system. dealership seemed to think that it could be a wiring problem or abs module. abs will occasionally go out/work but not properly, abs will kick in on dry roads not wet/snow covered. tire pressure light is illuminated and tire pressures are all correct. has been reset but comes back on after driving a few miles. occasionally it will go out on its own but then the speedometer will bounce around (if going 55 will jump to 70,80). when opening the rear tailgate hatch and closing, the dash light stays on like it is still open and dome lights will not work properly. when driving the door chime will sound and the door ajar light will go out and works properly until gate is opened again. when driving the door light and chime will come on lights stay on. the door ajar light also comes on and off intermittently when using the driver side door controls to put windows up/down you hear louder then normal clicking. also dims the lights when putting windows up/down. we can also smell what seems to be wires burning at times but can not find anything. we are at a loss of where to begin. we will not drive this vehicle any further then 50 mile radius from our home for fear of what will happen if we do. if we go further we rent a vehicle. now to the point of purchasing a cheap, reliable vehicle (not ford) and parking this one until we can pay down enough to trade in. *tr

The abs light along with the red brake light come on frequently. this has been happening for about three years. for the past year and a half these lights along with the battery light come on and the van surges, lurches and dies. this happens at any time, at lights especially but even when driving. sometimes all types of lights on the console begin to flicker and i hear a ticking/clicking noise as it occurs. i have started my engine and seen the odometer run what appears to be some sort of diagnostic test. if i push the trip reset when this is happening it cycles through several words and codes and the gauges (fuel, speedometer and temperature) move all the way to the right then fall back to zero and the ignition clicks rapidly. just today when i went out first thing in the morning to start my van, my electronics door opener would not work. i had to use the key, and when i opened the door the flashing/ clicking was underway. i have had my brakes replaced only to have the light issue resume before i left the mechanic. i have had the van hooked up to diagnostic computers twice which could not diagnose the problem. i am very frustrated. i haven't even paid this vehicle off yet and with these issues i won't be able to sell it in good conscience. as an american company, i expect ford to take responsibility for it's products and the american government to protect american consumers. *tr

While driving to work i noticed my odometer and speedometer quit working and then every light possible lit up, so when i got to work my husband told me to see if i could get it to grande truck center in san antonio. i left it and later received a call telling me the wiring harness had shorted out and i was very lucky that my van did not burn up. i was told maybe a varmint had chewed on the wires, but my van is always parked in the garage at night.. i decided to do some research after recalling an incident not far from our home that involved some type of ford suv that caught fire in the garage and burned the house down. all this was due to a faulty cruise control switch that cost about 21.00. i found that millions of vehicles had been recalled by ford because of this problem and the windstar was on the list of having the same or similar switch, but was not recalled and still has not been recalled. i have put a request in with grande truck to be reimbursed, since it was a manufacturer error and nothing i did, but to date i have not heard from them. i emailed ford to ask why my van was not recalled and received an answer that all recalls are handled by the nhtsa. yes, i do have the original switch that was removed from the van (looks like part#f58a-9f924-aa 2063) it was kind of hard to read. the invoice states replace abs module & hydraulic unit, replace wire harness & cruise control switch, service bleed, bleed sys. $2654.81. my husband was allowed to see the wiring harness that was almost burnt in half, but that was not kept. i thank god that there was no real tragedy that came out of this, but i also feel that ford is responsible and should take action to reimburse me my money. i would like to know if you have received any other complaints on the ford windstar. when i contacted your office by phone i was told that there was a new recall as of 8-31-2007, that included the windstar, but i did not see that information. thank you for your time. updated 12/12/07 *tr

My 2002 ford windstar has had a combo of problems. the first is that the car will chime the open door sound, and then unlock or lock the doors automatically, while the doors are unlocking or locking the over head dome lights flicker on or off, which makes a problem seeing during night time driving. as these issues are going on the power sliding rear doors try to open, again the open door sign lights up on the dash, the doors unlock, and the sliding doors try to open. they grind as they are being forced to open, as they are grinding, my rearview mirror light indicators will flash that the doors are both open. i have to pull over forcefully open the doors and manually close them. i have had to move my daughters car seat to the third row, because of the fear she has of falling out. the most they have ever opened is enough to let a breeze in, but traveling on a freeway at 75 mph, that is a little too much!!

I bought a 2002 ford windstar. it had 53,000 miles on the vehicle. the day i bought the vehicle it was raining and had no reason to roll down the windows and assume the car has electrical problems. the next day after purchase i tried rolling down the window and was unable. i left a message with the sales dept. now they say they have no record of this. since this day i have experienced various electrical problems (lights shutting off, doors not wanting to lock/unlock, abs brake lights on, gas on empty although i have a full tank) i brought it to the dealer for repair states there is a $100.00 deductible. i feel as though i should not have to pay this, you sold this car to me unsafe. i was told they did not know the lights were intermittently going off/on. so i said you guys are selling cars that are not thoroughly checked prior to selling. manager told me they just didn't know. but at the same time is unwilling to take care of repairs. i informed these people of this problem the very next day i bought the car. is this considered a lemon or what? *nm

Intermittent electrical problems with our 2002 ford windstar. we have owned the vehicle 17 months, several months of which it has been in the repair shop. the driver's side mirror has been replaced twice and the driver's side sliding door has been 're-aligned' on numerous occasions. the rear window on the driver's side fails to work on an intermittent basis. power door lock on the driver's side rear sliding door fails to work regularly. this is a serious safety concern! in the event that i need to get to my kids quickly, and the door did not unlock, there could be serious implications. this problem has been reported to the dealership, in writing, in march 2003 and august 2003. currently, the dealership showed no urgency in working with us to get us out of the vehicle that is considered to be a safety concern. i am in the process of filing a claim with ford to try to get resolution. electrical problems can be near impossible to trace, and can often times lead to fires, or worse, fatalities.*ak

I owned a 2000 ford windstar. the passenger rear door would, upon closing, slide back open frequently. the dealership constantly said nothing was wrong. finally, we traded in on a 2002 ford windstar. within 1 week of purchase the passenger sliding door began sliding back open upon closing - and would jerk back once closed. we have had it worked on 3 different times. it closes now, but has a rattle in it when driving and when the weather changes it makes loud noises when opening and closing. once in a while, upon cold start, the cd player will constantly rotate back and forth - while radio is on or off-until i turn car off and open driver door. when parking, i can open driver door, push lock button, then push unlock button - get out and close door. the security system will flash, indicating activation. keep in mind, the car is uplocked. if i open a door, the horn will begin blowing. as you can see, we have had out fill of ford. this is a company car and the entire mangement staff is fed up.

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 ford windstar. the contact noticed that the instrument panel lights and the power locks were failing. he replaced the fuse several times and smelled a burning odor underneath the hood of the vehicle. the contact found fluid leaking from the vehicle, which originated from the cruise control. the wiring harness was damaged. the dealer replaced the cruise control wiring harness, switch, and the speedometer wiring harness at the cost of $888. the manufacturer stated that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 07v336000 (vehicle speed control); therefore, they would not assist. the vehicle has been repaired. the vin was unknown. the current and failure mileages were 80,000.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - WIRING - INTERIOR/UNDER DASH

Electrical problems with 2002 ford windstar. back window on passenger side does not work sometimes. all the warning lights on the dash will start going on and off by themselves at no specific time. when turning on the turn signal they will go on off frequently. while driving down the road and this happens van has shut off twice. power locks sometimes will not work. interior lights sometimes will not work. all this began to happen when van reached 30,000 miles and warranty ran out. the dealer has not been co-operative because we chose to take our van elsewhere for regular scheduled maintence. dealer also told me that ford would not help because i didn't honor them with my maintence. i am really frustated. my husband is an electrian and also owned his own auto shop for years. he say's this electrical problem is impossible to trace. is it going to take someone getting seriously enjured or loss of life for ford to realize that there is a definate electrical problem in my van. i know other people who have the same problem and can't get any where with ford. *ak
