In a january 26, 2011 defect information report, ford motor company (ford) notified the national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa) that it will conduct a safety recall to address corrosion related fractures in the front lower control arm rear attaching brackets and body mount attachments at the rear of the front subframe in approximately 425,288 model year (my) 1999 through 2003 ford windstar vehicles manufactured from april 1998 to july 2003 and either sold or currently registered in the following high corrosion (salt-belt) states:connecticut, delaware, district of columbia, illinois, indiana, iowa, kentucky, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, utah, vermont, west virginia and wisconsin (nhtsa recall no. 11v-030, ford recall no. 11s16).according to ford, separation of a front lower control arm rear attaching bracket may result in a lower control arm separation and separations of both front subframe rear body mounts may result in separation of the steering intermediate shaft.either condition could result in diminished vehicle directional control, increasing the risk of a crash.dealers will inspect the lower control arm rear attachment flanges and the rear body mount sections of the subframe on the right (passenger) and left (driver) sides of the vehicle.owners of vehicles that pass the inspection will be notified when to return for installation of reinforcement brackets to extend the durability of the front subframe assembly in affected areas in the presence of corrosion.owners of vehicles that do not pass inspection, but can be repaired, will be offered transportation until parts become available.repurchase offers will be extended to owners of vehicles that cannot be repaired with the reinforcement brackets.this investigation is closed.
PE10026FORD MOTOR COMPANY07/20/201012/20/2010Front Subframe Corrosion Failures
The office of defects investigation (odi) has identified 346 complaints to odi and ford alleging fracture, cracking and or excessive corrosion of the front subframes in model year (my) 1999 through 2003 ford windstar vehicles.approximately 97 percent of these complaints (334) involve vehicles that have been operated in salt belt states, which make up approximately 60 percent of the subject vehicle sales in the united states.the front subframe, sometimes referred to as the engine cradle, is a structural component of the windstar vehicles that carries the engine, transaxle, steering rack and certain front suspension components (e.g., lower control arm).for complaints with sufficient information to identify the location of the failure, most describe problems with the rear mounting bracket for the front passenger-side lower control arm with some related to the rear body mount attachment located in the same general area of the subframe (right-rear section near the front passenger wheel).the remainder of the reports allege fracture of the front subframe at other or, most often, unspecified locations.almost all of the complaints that specified the side of the vehicle indicated that the problem occurred on the right/passenger side (106), with only a few indicating the left/driver side (2) or both sides (3) were affected.ford and several complainants attributed the right-side failures to the routing of the air-conditioning lines above the front subframe on that side of the vehicle, further noting that condensation has been observed dripping onto the front subframe in the area of the affected components (the a/c drain tube is also located on the right side, near the front subframe).odi has identified 93 complaints related to lower control arm attachments, including 80 that appear to involve complete separations.all but one of these involved vehicles from salt belt states.all three crash incidents appear to be related to lower control arm separations, including one road departure into a road-side sign resulting in a totalled vehicle and a lane departure into another vehicle.almost half of the odi complaints related to control arm separation occurred at speeds greater than 20 mph and about a quarter occurred at highway speeds.three-quarters of these complaints allege experiencing difficulty controlling the vehicle and about 40 percent appear to have resulted in departures from the intended lane of travel.testing by both ford and nhtsa have demonstrated that lower control arm separation from the rear attachment bracket results in significant toe out of the affected wheel, which affects the driver's ability to control vehicle direction.according to ford, moderate braking improved vehicle controllability by reducing the amount of toe out, possibly explaining incidents that did not allege a loss of control.odi's analysis of complaints related to the rear body mount identified 41 complaints (odi only).these complaints generally report experiencing progressively worsening noise concerns when turning, accelerating or braking.although, some of the complaints that appeared to involve a complete separation of the body mount alleged difficulty steering, the effects on vehicle control from this failure mode do not appear to be as great as those resulting from control arm separation.however, odi is seeking more information regarding two complaints which alleged that body mount failure resulted in disconnection of the steering wheel from the steering rack (one occurred during vehicle service).this investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea10-007) for subject vehicles sold or currently registered in salt belt states to further assess the scope, frequency and safety consequences of the alleged defect in these vehicles.odi will continue to gather information about vehicles outside the salt belt as well.
EA10007FORD MOTOR COMPANY12/20/2010Front Subframe Corrosion Failures
The office of defects investigation (odi) has identified 346 complaints to odi and ford alleging fracture, cracking and or excessive corrosion of the front subframes in model year (my) 1999 through 2003 ford windstar vehicles.approximately 97 percent of these complaints (334) involve vehicles that have been operated in salt belt states, which make up approximately 60 percent of the subject vehicle sales in the united states.the front subframe, sometimes referred to as the engine cradle, is a structural component of the windstar vehicles that carries the engine, transaxle, steering rack and certain front suspension components (e.g., lower control arm).for complaints with sufficient information to identify the location of the failure, most describe problems with the rear mounting bracket for the front passenger-side lower control arm with some related to the rear body mount attachment located in the same general area of the subframe (right-rear section near the front passenger wheel).the remainder of the reports allege fracture of the front subframe at other or, most often, unspecified locations.almost all of the complaints that specified the side of the vehicle indicated that the problem occurred on the right/passenger side (106), with only a few indicating the left/driver side (2) or both sides (3) were affected.ford and several complainants attributed the right-side failures to the routing of the air-conditioning lines above the front subframe on that side of the vehicle, further noting that condensation has been observed dripping onto the front subframe in the area of the affected components (the a/c drain tube is also located on the right side, near the front subframe).odi has identified 93 complaints related to lower control arm attachments, including 80 that appear to involve complete separations.all but one of these involved vehicles from salt belt states.all three crash incidents appear to be related to lower control arm separations, including one road departure into a road-side sign resulting in a totalled vehicle and a lane departure into another vehicle.almost half of the odi complaints related to control arm separation occurred at speeds greater than 20 mph and about a quarter occurred at highway speeds.three-quarters of these complaints allege experiencing difficulty controlling the vehicle and about 40 percent appear to have resulted in departures from the intended lane of travel.testing by both ford and nhtsa have demonstrated that lower control arm separation from the rear attachment bracket results in significant toe out of the affected wheel, which affects the driver's ability to control vehicle direction.according to ford, moderate braking improved vehicle controllability by reducing the amount of toe out, possibly explaining incidents that did not allege a loss of control.odi's analysis of complaints related to the rear body mount identified 41 complaints (odi only).these complaints generally report experiencing progressively worsening noise concerns when turning, accelerating or braking.although, some of the complaints that appeared to involve a complete separation of the body mount alleged difficulty steering, the effects on vehicle control from this failure mode do not appear to be as great as those resulting from control arm separation.however, odi is seeking more information regarding two complaints which alleged that body mount failure resulted in disconnection of the steering wheel from the steering rack (one occurred during vehicle service).this investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis for subject vehicles sold or currently registered in salt belt states to further assess the scope, frequency and safety consequences of the alleged defect in these vehicles.odi will continue to gather information about vehicles outside the salt belt as well.

In a letter dated august 26, 2010, ford motor company (ford) submitted a defect information report notifying nhtsa that it will conduct a safety recall (nhtsa recall no. 10v-385) to address a rear axle defect in model year (my) 1998 through 2003 ford windstar vehicles built at the oakville assembly plant from september 1, 1997 through february 28, 2003 and either sold or currently registered in high corrosion (salt-belt) states where the use of salt and other corrosive chemicals may be used to treat snow/ice covered roads.the following states are included in ford's recall:connecticut, delaware, district of columbia, illinois, indiana, iowa, kentucky, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, west virginia and wisconsin. the subject vehicles utilize a stamped/formed axle assembly manufactured by benteler automotive corporation of galesburg, mi.according to ford, after many years of vehicle service in the salt-belt states, corrosion can weaken the rear axle, making it susceptible to torsional stress.there is a risk that the combined effects of corrosion and stress can lead to cracks which, if undetected, can propagate and result in a complete fracture of the axle.a completely fractured axle can affect vehicle handling and increase the risk of a crash.to correct the safety defect, ford will initially inspect all of the subject vehicles brought into ford/lincoln-mercury dealerships for possible cracked axles.owners of vehicles without cracked axles will be notified when to return for the installation of reinforcement brackets to extend the axle durability in the presence of corrosion.owners who have vehicles with cracked axles will either be offered a repair or alternative transportation until parts become available. on may 13, 2010, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened pe10-016 to investigate complaints of rear axle cracking in my 1999 through 2003 ford windstar minivans.combining odi and ford complaint data, odi is aware of a total 891 complaints alleging rear axle cracking in the subject vehicles.over a third of the complaints (334) allege that the cracking progressed to a complete fracture of the rear axle, including 8 allegations of crashes resulting in 3 injuries. approximately 57 percent of the subject vehicles (524,661) were sold in salt-belt states covered by ford's recall and ford estimates that approximately 463,000 of these remain in service.ninety-six percent of the complaints (858) and all of the complaints alleging complete fracture were from the recall region.the action taken by ford is sufficient to resolve the issues raised by this investigation.accordingly, this investigation is closed.
PE10016FORD MOTOR COMPANY05/13/2010Rear Axle Beam Failure
The office of defects investigation has received 234 complaints alleging rear axle failure in model year 1999 through 2003 ford windstar minivans, including two alleging that the failures resulted in minor crashes.over half of the complaints (128) allege a complete fracture of the axle beam.fifty-six complaints indicate that the axle failure occurred at speeds of 40 miles per hour or greater.one crash occurred while the vehicle was traveling on a highway.the rear axle reportedly snapped in half after the vehicle struck a pot hole.the driver indicated that both rear tires blew (note that axle fracture often causes the tires to achieve a severe negative camber - with the top of the tire tilted inward - resulting in contact with the fender well).the vehicle then struck a guard rail because of difficulty controlling the vehicle while braking to a stop.the second crash was also alleged to have involved a complete axle fracture, in this case resulting in a low-speed curb impact.the rear axle beam in the subject vehicles is an inverted u channel design, which appears to provide a collection point for road salt slurry, resulting in corrosion that progressively weakens the part until it fractures.approximately 96 percent of the complaints (225), 94 percent of the complete fractures (121), 96 percent of the high-speed incidents (54) and both alleged crashes are from salt-belt states.in addition to the two alleged crashes, 14 additional complaints alleged vehicle control concerns associated with the rear axle failure incident.a preliminary evaluation has been opened to assess the scope, frequency and safety consequences of the alleged defect in the subject vehicles.

I was driving down the road when i noticed my 2002 ford windstar was swaying like it did the first time when the axle broke and it was replaced and then that one was reinforced. i stopped and looked under the rear-end and saw what looked like a crack or break, maybe two on the right side or drivers side of the axle. i immedietly took the vehicle to the ford dealership for inspection and was told my axle was broken. so now the original axle broke and was replaced. that axle was reinforced, and now has also broken. something needs to be done.

I had my front tire replaced and the man that changed it told me that i need an alignment because of the way my tire wore out. about 3 weeks later, when i had the money, i took my car to get an alignment and the car shop called and said that both of my tire rods needed to be replaced before an alignment was completed. i've had the car for less than 2 years and although it is an older vehicle, the tire rods should have lasted longer than that (if properly checked). my steering shakes horribly from side to side at various speeds and often times my abs/trac off lights come on and won't got off. i am still able to use my brakes though. i am not sure why that light comes on. *tr

The front driver side spring broke in two pieces. due to the weight of the vehicle the stabalizer bar ended up getting bent. also, because of the sharp edge where the spring broke it cut the front brake line. i'm grateful that it occurred overnight to where my family and i weren't driving it.

Ford motor company main topic: vehicleserviceissues your inquiry: my vehicle was recalled for a repair. i took my ford windstar to bob macxey dealership on 06/03/2011 for recall service. when i took my van in , it ran smooth , i just had an atuo starter put on the van this winter and you couldn't even tell when the van was on. i went to pick the van up and was told i would have to leave it overnight to seal/glue. i was told they didn't have a loaner so i had to pay my supervisor to pick me and my kids up from school. when i picked the van up it was riding very rough and loud. this is the van my wife and children use everyday, now it sounds like a truck and it is shaking and vibrating more. i took the van back and spoke with the manager wayne dallwein. he told me i was luck it didn't sound worse than that because it was an old van. i explained to him the van was not like that when i brought it in. he insist there was nothing more he could do. this is the worst service i have evry recievedand my van is no a wreck. i even has a rust hole on the side that was not there and someething coming from the bottom on the driver side that was not there. i plan to file a complaint with bbb but wanted to try to resolvethis issue fairly first. please do not send anyone else to this dealership. owner: yes vehicle identification number: 2fmda51452ba76615 mileage: 17000 vehicle location: inpossession if contacted dealer: yes dealer name: bob maxey owner first name: sherrod owner last name: calvin owner email address: ariesdouble@yahoo.com owner address1: 20237 kingsville city: harper woods state: mi 313-415-7822

My 2002 ford windstar started riding really rough. the tires were checked and seemed to be fine. the back end of the van seemed to be riding very rough and my mechanic though it might be a strut issue. as it turns out, the rear axle broke completely in half while my father in law drove my two young children on the highway. what a scary experience. i've checked on the internet for similar experiences. others have had this happen to them as well. this issue needs to be addressed by ford and should be a recall issued. *tr

Recall on front subframes on windstars. mine is bad, ford does not have parts, will not buy it back and wants me to pay for everything over 100 miles/day on the rental. they also gave me a rental that is 50.00/day and they will only pay 38.00. rear mounts are missing chunks, was told there was a crack on drivers side now told there is not, ask them to relook to be sure and was told no. they claim it is repairable but has lots of rust in addition to the missing chunks. i have copies of the pictures the dealer took.

Ford windstar van, which was already subject to rear axle recall, and the rear axle did break on it in may, and was replaced and i received reimbursement for the replacement from ford. however, another incident happened in december. my 21 year old son was in an accident driving this van on thursday, dec. 16. the van lost traction and pulled to the right, pulling him into a ditch and down a steep embankment. the front of the van was ripped off, tires slashed, van almost flipped over, and the airbags never deployed. he hit a dirt embankment head on going about 30-35 mph. the roads were icy that day, and he was on a curve... the van would not respond to steering to correct the direction the van was going. i experienced something similar last winter; the van seemed to pull to the right, going off the road without allowing the driver to control the vehicle. however, when i went off the road, it was in a shallow ditch and it caused no damage to the van. my son was not as fortunate, and he could have been severely injured. i feel that this may have something to do with the current investigation into the front suspension... the van could not be controlled, and pulled to the right. our insurance co. is taking care of this, and i don't know the current location of the van. it is totaled, i know that. i asked state farm to check out the front suspension for weakness or rust, but don't know if they'll know what to look for, especially since the front is so damaged from the wreck that the tires are turned sideways, and i believe the front axle is broken. please send someone to look at my van, and see what caused this wreck; my son could have been killed. thank you for the work you've done so far.... your organization is so valuable to consumers.

Drove car and parked along street. when i returned around 4 hours later i opened car door and sat down in driver seat. a loud bag was heard and i thought someone threw something or shot my van. got out and could not find anything. when i started to drive away my left front tire exploded. the next morning i found the coi spring had broken and cut the tire when i tried to drive away. had i been driving down the road this would have caused me to lose control of the van. after reearching the internet this seems to be an ongoing issue with ford coil springs and i believe there was a recall for model years 1999-2001.

There are three failures on my car that have happened within the last three months. the 2002 ford windstar only has 57,000 miles. 1. intake manifold gaskets leaking: gaskets are sucking air in and not sealing properly 2. broken strut, this is the second time this has been replaced. the first time was within 10,000 miles. 3. abs control module: the control module has been diagnosed and faulty by the dealership. about a $1,200 to replace. all these things should not be happening to a car that is maintained well, garage kept, and only has 57k miles on it. *tr

Regarding the ford windstar recall of the rear axel: i own a 2002 ford windstar and live in minnesota, a corrosion state. i called a ford dealership nearby and was told that my vin number does not qualify for the recall. i then called the ford customer service and was told the reason that my van does not qualify is because it was manufactured in california; however, it has been in south dakota and minnesota for its entire life. i want the nhtsa to be aware that ford is doing only a partial recall and one must be real proactive to make sure the safety of their family, as ford will not be sending a letter to ford windstar owners if one's vehicle was not manufactured in a salt-belt state. ford is not ensuring the safety of all their ford windstar owners. the ford customer service personal that i spoke to said i could call the ford dealership again and explain my concerns that the real axel on my 2002 ford windstar is corroded, that i live in a corrosion state, and that the only reason that we don't qualify for the recall is because it was manufactured in california. the ford dealership will then have to try to get an allowance for my vehicle to qualify for the recall. but again, i will not be notified by ford, the only way i knew about the recall is because i heard about it on the news. i am concerned about driving my van and the rear axel breaking while i am driving with my 3 children.

Friday night my wife told me she had heard a rolling thumping sound from the rear of our 2002 ford windstar, we thought it might be something rolling around in the storage area behind the rear seat. saturday the 29th i was driving the vehicle with my wife in the passenger seat in our neighborhood, heading to the store to shop for groceries. speed limit 25mph when i was making a right turn from a stop i heard a thumping sound. i new right away it wasn't something rolling around in the van. it sounded like it came from outside under the rear of the van. we were very busy this day and didn't have time to investigate. later that evening my wife took my daughter's boyfriend home when it happened again, but she said it was even louder. my daughter called me to tell me that she was afraid they may get stranded. this morning i went online to research the sound and found many other people having the same issue and gave descriptions and photos and some had completely cracked in half. i went under my van and found that the rear axle is rusted and cracked.

To whom it may concern. my name is denis magerr, we have a 2002 ford windstar. last week the rear axle snapped while my wife was driving with my 10 year old son. but for the grace of god, she didn't crash and was killed. axle actually snapped in two. since this incident, we have gone on line and found over 200 incidents of this same problem. evidently, rear axle is u design, and salt and road debris gets caught up in axle and causes corrosion. ford better address this problem before someone is killed. please note that most of these vans are used by families, with small children. i would hate to see a fatality without ford doing something about it. is there any recourse with ford. my contact info is: denis magerr 109 robins run east logan township, nj 08085 phone: (856)-467-2652 cell: (609)-458-7326 e-mail: smagerr@yahoo.com please review and advise a.s.a.p.

I have 2002 ford windstar. i took it to a local repair shop on 6-23-10 because of a rattling noise when ever it went over a bump. the mechanic told me that the rear axle was cracked almost all the way through. he told me he could get one from a salvage yard and fix it for around $700. luckily i had it taken care of when i did because we were planning a trip out of town the next weekend and it surely would have broken in half on our trip.

I was entering the highway as i started to accel i heard a loud thump. immediately my car began swurving and almost tipped over, it felt as though the rear tires fell off. there was a large amount of smoke and sparks coming from the rear of the car and i struggled to stay in control of the vehicle. utlimately the rear axle broke in half without warning and out of no where. i did not hit anything and was driving safely. luckily there was a break in traffic or i have no doubt i would have hit other cars on the road. the car came extremely close to flipping, it tipped at one point and would have flipped on the passagener side if not for my quick reaction. the vechile was towed and my mechanic immediately told me axles do not break like this and he advised me to call ford to see if there was a manufacters problem with the axle. i called my local dealer and was advised that ford have experienced no problems like mine and my car is out of warrenty so there is nothing they could do. only after i came home and searched the web did i realize there are thousands and thousands of other windstar owners who experienced the same kind of breakage and i believe a more aggresive ingestigation needs to take place. the axle needs to be repaired and if this is a manufacturers defect it need to be fixed before someone is killed

Ford 2002 windstar had a rattling sound when traveling over bumps and with a slight wheel pull to the left. vehicle axle beam broke while car was traveling on rte 4 northbound at about 35 mph,in n. kingstown ri at approximately 2:15pm. i was able to navigate to the side of the road without injury to any other person or vehicle. axle beam was cracked and bent causing the driver side tire to rub against the body of the car. the car was loaded onto a flat bed tow truck and the axle broke cleanly during transport. this caused the passenger side wheel to rub against the car body during unloading. this car is now parked in a repair facility lot. serious injury or accident were probably avoided through the fortunate combination of low speed of travel in the right hand lane combined with a light traffic situation on the highway.

2002 ford windstar rear axle is cracked on both sides. vehicle has 104,000 miles. well maintained and never abused. i was shocked and in awe when i noticed this today while i was rotating the tires. i went on the internet and found this was a common problem and under investigation. i am a safety professional and a member of the american society of safety engineers (asse). my two children ride in this vehicle every day. some of these vans are used at daycare denters and small bus companies. this is a serious defect. i have read comments about people down-playing this, and feeling this is a waste of time. this investigation is completely justified and rational. owr van is in great shape and showing no other signs of major rust or defects. if this had failed on the highway, the results could have been deadly. these are family vehicles designed specifically for transporting a bunch of kids. i drove two 5 year olds to a birthday party 40 miles on the highway yesterday with no knowlwdge of the problem. feel free to contact me. i can provide pictures. thank you

I got a letter recently about a recall on my 2002 ford windstar. the recall was for the cruise control/brake light issue. as i was looking online for the name of the recall, i realized that there have been many complaints about the windstar's axel problems. in september 2009 my windstar started feeling like the back end was fishtailing but there was no ice.it sounded weird to. my husband followed me to the local sears auto store about 4 miles away. when we arrived he said that the tires looked like they were at a 45degree angle facing outward. when the mechanic looked at it, he said that we were luck to be alive and that the axle was holding by a one inch piece of metal. they said they were lucky they used the car life instead of the cross life or it would have broken the axle. not one of the mechanics at that sears have ever seen a broken axle before and told me it was probably not fixable. they said they couldn't legally let us drive it because it was a safety issue. we had to have it towed to our mechanic. he did fix it but it cost over $1,000. i'm glad my family is safe and we weren't driving on the highway. with all the complaints and safety issues, why has there not been a recall on this ford part.

While driving on a road with our three young children in the car, the car jerked, started making loud noises, and smoking. there was a significant amount of smoke pouring from the left (driver) side. we pulled to the side and saw that the driver's side rear tire was at an odd angle as was the passenger side rear wheel. when the tow-truck arrived and lifted it up, it was very clear that the axle had snapped for no reason. we were lucky that there were no injuries or a major accident, nor did the car catch fire but it smells of burned rubber.

2002 ford windstar; the rear axle broke in two while driving at 40 mph. both tires tilted out, axle cracked a little to the left of center while looking at it from the rear of the vehicle. fortunately my wife was able to control the van. i understand this has happened in hundreds of windstars, and something needs to be done before people die, if they have not already.

Driving home from doctors office. i was traveling 45 m.p.h. , it was raining. i was going around a curve when my vehicle, 2002 ford windstar started to fishtail. i stopped the car and went around checking to see if i might have a low tire. tires seemed fine. i noticed a bumping noise when i would go around a curve. i got home and pulled the van up on ramps and looked underneath. i told my wife we are't going anywhere because the axle is cracked and holding by a thread. i took the axle off and upon inspecting it closer the otherside is cracking. this vehicle only has 86,597 miles on it. i have owned toyota's and a suzuki, which i put 250,000 miles, on these vehicles and never had to replace an axle.

Coming home from church one sunday, we had to brake hard & suddenly to avoid a car that was on my side of the road. the van's rear wheel left the pavement and jerked to the side. the van handled wrong after that, and we took it to ford to have it looked at. they replaced front drive shafts and said that the rear wheels were rubbing the wheel well, and i needed to have my shocks replaced. the van still made the same noises and had bad handling after this work was done, so took it back & had them look again for problem. they still didn't see any problem. my wife drove this van over 125 miles one day to take her sister for a medical procedure. she was nervous about the bad handling & swaying rear end, so drove slowly and stayed to the right on the freeway. she drove all the way to southern charlotte, nc on hwy. 85 from davidson county, nc. huge amounts of traffic. when she got home she parked the van, & next day i came home from work and saw the tires were tilted in the rear. went up & looked under the van, and the axle is broken in 2 places. my wife, her mother, and her sister were all in the van driving on the highway with a broken axle, because ford told us that our van was all right. called ford and was told what do you want me to do about it? you're driving an 8 year old vehicle! buy something else! and also, there is no implied warranty. your van is out of warranty, but we'll be glad to do the work for you if you bring it in to our service department. or ford makes good quality vehicles. would you like to hear about the new car buying incentives we have in place now? get real. i will never buy another ford in my life. wife called ford and spoke with them, and the age of the van was mentioned. she stated that i drive a 1986 toyota truck, and the axle is not broken on it yet. she said henry ford did not have this in mind when he started making the model t. shoddy work and inferior materials.

The rear axle on my 2002 ford windstar broke with no warning. the car has never been crashed and is maintained very well with no visible rust. this causes loss of control but i was able to get the car stopped without incident. in an internet search i see that this is not an uncommon failure and wonder why this is not being investigated. it very dangerous. *tr

For about three to four years now, we have been having what we thought was a problem with the front end of our 2002 ford windstar. we had numerous front end alignments done. we had the caster/camber work done twice at a very high cost. (this requires taking the front cowling apart in order to put in new font end parts) and still the vehicle would pull in either direction at any given time. it would at times wonder back and forth on the road. about a week ago my wife said she herd strange noises. (clunks, squeaks etc.) then today she was driving the van with my kids to church. luckily it was local. she said she herd a bang and the van started to squeak and wonder all over the road uncontrollably. she started to smell something burning. she said the steering wheel had to be turned in an abnormal position in order to keep the van going straight down the road. when she got home i looked at the van sitting in the driveway and the rear wheels were tilted in at the top. i crawled under and found that the rear axle beam had cracked almost all the way through. the crack was about 18 inches in form the drivers side. the passenger side looked as though it would eventually crack also. when i looked closer at the crack, you could see shining metal at the top part of the crack, indicating it was a new crack. there was surface rust on the lower part of the crack indicating that the crack had been there for some time and had just gotten bigger. this explains the wondering problem we have been having. being that this is a 2002 it is out of warranty but this is definitely a safety problem and should be addressed as a recall by ford. i am scared thinking what could have happened if my wife and kids were driving on an interstate at 65 mph. i am also scared thinking that my 16 year old daughter who just started driving on her permit was driving this vehicle in this condition. thank god they were driving local at the time that the crack worsened to a point that it is now undrivable. *tr

My wife told me she heard a rubbing sound in the rear of her 2002 ford windstar. i quickly noticed the left rear wheel was tilted in from the top. figuring it was a worn wheel bearing or broken control arm, i jacked it up, pulled the wheel and noticed the axle was almost completely broken about 8 inches left of center. *tr

Driving home from a family outing on 03/06/2010, we heard a loud sound/clunk coming from the rear of our 2002 ford windstar. luckily, we were only doing 30 mph on our street right almost to our driveway, instead of being on the expressway doing 60 mph as we were only minutes before . the van's rear end swerved as i applied the brakes. i managed to pull into our driveway and calm the wife and kids down (who were hysterical). i have to admit that i was scared also. when i managed to park the van, i noticed that the rear tires were slanted into the van, rubbing the wheel wells at the top. i then looked under the rear of the van and seen that the rear axle beam was broke, about 18 from the driver side rear tire. i implore everone that this has happened to to call the ford customer care number (1-800-241-3673) and report it. this is the only way that ford will acknowledge this problem as a potential manufacturer defect. our 2002 windstar has only 78,338 miles on it. our local dealer, where we bought it from, said they have never heard of this happening. i find it very hard to believe since i can bring up about 100 different complaints about this very sam thing for the model years 2000-2002.

I heard a rattle which sounded like a loose tailpipe. i brought it to my mechanic to have it looked at. the problem was that the rear axle beam had snapped. he said that it was not damaged and it looked like it was just a bad piece of steel. he had never seen this problem before. the parts did not have to be ordered because the parts were readily available and in stock at his parts dealer. after looking on the internet i found that there are several complaints about this problem. i was lucky that the axle beam did not break while i was traveling on the highway because the handling of the vehicle was severely compromised. the rear axle beam was replaced at a cost of one thousand dollars. i did not keep the old axle beam. *tr

I was driving my 2002 for windstar and the roads were snowy and slippery. while driving the van seemed to slide and sway in the back. i assumed it was from the snowy roads and took the van home. 2 days later when the roads were pretty well cleared i took the van out again. while driving on clear pavement the van seemed to sway and slide like i was on ice in the rear-end. as i headed home it got worse and was shaking and swaying. i slowed down to about 20 miles per hour and got the van home. i had it looked at and was told that the axle is 1 to 2 inch from a complete break. if it would have broke while i was driving it would have caused me to wreck. i have researched this and have found many complaints about this happening to 02 windstars. i cant afford to fix something this expensive. something needs to be done before someone gets hurt. *tr

2002 ford windstar rear axle beam broke in half while making a left hand turn. the van started swaying in the rear earlier in the day and we thought it was because of ice and snow on the roads that day. on good pavement we did not experience any issues. we stopped and looked at the tires and they all looked fine , and found no evidence to suggest anything else was wrong with van. no other warning before failure. when this happened both rear wheels towed inward causing van to slide out of control for short distance, and causing damage to the vehicle. had we been traveling on the highway at speeds of 65 miles an hour i would not like to think what would of happened.we had to have the vehicle towed to a ford dealer for repairs. the cost of these repairs was $1782.33 not including the towing bill.the tow truck driver said he has never seen a rear axle beam break before. this could of been a major accident, causing bodily harm or death. i had the dealer save the parts for me and i also took pictures of the failed part after it was removed. the dealer would not cover any cost of the repairs. *tr

Rear axle beam on my 2002 ford windstar fractured. noticed vehicle handling was poor, rear end of vehicle swaying while driving straight, tires squealing around turns. mechanic found axle beam had fractured. costly repair, could have been more serious if a loss of control had occurred. fortunate to have occurred at low speed. *tr

Our 2002 ford windstar with approx. 107,000 miles had the rear axle beam break in half. the week before the break we noticed that the car felt like it needed an alignment at highway speeds. luckily the part broke pulling out of the driveway at slow speed. the vehicle was not drivable after the break and needed to be towed. i fear that if the break happened at highway speeds we would have lost complete control of the vehicle. we have never taken this vehicle off road, used it to tow anything or been in an accident where damage would have been done to the axle beam. *tr

2002 ford windstar had a sudden, catastrophic rear axle failure-a near complete crack through the axle causing the driver's rear tire to collapse inward, while driving at 40 mph on a straight road. the rear axle and the rear tire had to be replaced, the axle was 530.00, and the tire 100.00. this was with the work done by my husband. the car is in otherwise good running condition, has always been serviced by professionals. the mileage was 98,000 miles and the vehicle has always been lightly used, no heavy loads, no towing, just basically football practice with the kids. *tr

I have a 2002 ford windstar with 67712 miles. the car started making metallic creaking noises from the rear end whenever i made sharp right hand turns. inspection showed that the rear axle beam had a 2 inch crack in it. i had to have my mechanic replace the rear axle. my searches on the web revealed that this is a very common defect with the windstars. *tr

Rear axle broke, which could have caused a serious accident if i were on the highway. i was driving down the road, everytime i turned to the right i would hear a squeaking noise. i did not think much of it until i started to smell something when i looked in the rear view mirror i noticed smoke coming from the rear driver's side wheel. i pulled over and called aaa. thank god, when the van was looked at we found that the rear axle was broken and the wheel was rubbing against the inside of the wheel well. when stopped the tires on the back of the van looked as though the tires were bent in as a direct result of the broken axle. i am so happy my children were not in the van because this could have resulted in a very bad accident. ford needs to step up and fix this problem, i have seen quite a few complaints regarding this issue. *tr

2002 ford windstar se rear axel severed....based upon my research many others have experienced the same issue between 2000 and 2003. i also contacted several ford dealer who have informed me that they have sold an extraordinary amount of these rear axles. please make ford issue a safety recall on these axles. they will not take voluntary responsibility for this obvious defective part. someone is going to get killed if this defective part fails at 65 miles per hour. you will also be responsible if you do nothing about this! *tr
