My 2002 ford windstar has had many parts tested. they all seem to test good. battery , alternator to name a few. when driving the van hazzards come on ( without turning them on ) the radio shuts off, the heat turns off and power is lost as if it's the alternator. abs lights come on and then the dash panel lights up like a christmas tree.. oh then the vechile dies and won't start , clicks like it's the alternator or battery but they test fine.. after searching many blogs this seems to be a big issue with many mechanics that don't know what it is.. this needs to be fixed it's a pain and thank god for aaa but really should i have to use my aaa all the time/ this particular vechile spent 6 months in the ford garage in 2010. now what when you buy something you think it will be good for you and your family and that you can use it as a primary car. we have lost days from work, money and money for trying different parts now what???

After purchasing from a dealer in oct of 2010 the abs light, check traction control light, brake light and air bag light started coming on intermittently. had the vehicle serviced in mi for the axle recall. was without the vehicle and had loaner car for 2 months. after getting vehicle back the lights were on more consistently the dealership noted this but did not offer any reason found for this. by summer of 2011 these lights were staying on almost constantly and this continued for a year, after investigating this issue online and seeing that other owners have invested hundreds of dollars trying to get the lights to go off and stay off only to have them keep coming back on we have decided to file a complaint as this issue is not a simple fix and obviously is happening in hundreds of vehicles. our problem has progressed to where the speedometer and odemeter go wildly up and down while driving at highway speeds and we are never sure of our speed. the lights on the dash go out and the power to door locks, radio and a/c power is lost as well as the blinkers for lane changes. this vehicle is very unsafe but we need it as we have 5 children and can not afford to buy a new one. the power window on passenger side as well as the power sliding doors do not work. when this issue happens if their happened to be an electrical fire because of it, we would be unable to exit the vehicle because the doors are locked and the knobs on the interior of this model are flush into the door when the vehicle is locked and can not be manually pulled up. with children, this is a very serious safety concern. please please investigate this issue with the ford windstar. i have also contacted for with my complaint and they only would say there are no recalls on this issue right now but to save my receipts should i try to get it fixed in case one is issued in the future.

We parked the van at walmart and when we started it back up the abs and brake lights came on and stayed on until we shut down and restarted 2 times. it started doing it sporaticly. we bought this van used, so we took it back to the dealership and they ran a diagnostic and said that nothing was showing up and just reset the system. the lights had stayed off until sunday, october 14th; they are now starting to come back on sporacticly.

About 2 years ago i have noticed that the abs and brake light would come on sometimes now after driving a few miles they come on constantly now. i spoke to a ford service advisor and was told it would cost me over $600.00 to repair and that there was a recall only for certain states. this does not seem fair to other ford owners to have to pay for something that ford has a default on and seems to be a problem with in a lot of these vehicles. i can not afford this repair and i'm sure most people can not afford. please look into this. ## vin passed ## ford, windstar lx, 2002 ## *tr

Brake and abs lights turn on at same time without an apparent cause, this happens after driving van 5 or less minutes at a low speed. once the engine is turned off and restarted again, both lights remain off, and again, after driving the van for a short distance brake and abs lights come on again.

Approximately a week ago, the #10, 15 amp fuse was blown. replaced it with an approved fuse and blew right after i started van up. i had noticed some liquid on garage floor about 2 days before the fuse blew, the the brake light on dashboard was lit up. i checked the brake fluid level and it was very low. when i added fluid, i noticed there appeared to be a leak of fluid on the front, underside of the master brake cylinder. i had a friend who is a mechanic look at it and he told me the master cylinder could be bad, but looked like the pressure switch was where the leak was originating. upon further inspection, he noticed there was a wire harness that was soaked in brake fluid and beneath another one was wet. he attempted to clean both of them and replaced fuses, but after using the brakes the first time(going out of the driveway) i heard a pop and the fuse was blown again. this particular fuse controls the odometer, speedometer, the abs light on dashboard. the amount of fluid going onto the engine is a good probability of a fire starting when the leaking brake fluid is on the hot engine. this seems to be an increasing problem and needs to be recalled.

Right after i had the recall for 3 different recall the front end, brakes, rear axle completed my abs light, brake light & track off lights all light up on my dash all at the same time & stay on. i have a photo of this. after i turn van off for awhile (it needs to cool down) they go off. i called ford several times about this and they said it had nothing to do with their brake recall or front end recalls if i wanted to pay them to check it out i can bring it in. amazing that i never had any problems with my van until ford started fixing the recalled items.

While driving my 2002 ford windstar on july 6, 2012, my abs light and brake light came on simultaneously and stayed on for approximately 20 minutes until i arrived home. the next day, july 7, 2012, when i started my car in the morning to run errands the lights were not on. later on that day, i started my car and began driving and after about five minutes of driving once again the abs light and brake light came on and stayed on until i shut the car off. this has continued to happen as of the date i am typing up this complaint to you. it goes on and off whenever it feels like it and is very random, just like so many other problems with our 2002 ford windstar. our electrical system in our ford windstar also works whenever it feels like it as far as locking the doors, opening the doors, etc. it is difficult to ascertain what is causing the abs light and brake light to keep coming on so randomly as there are days it does not come on at all and i feel this is something the ford company should be responsible for looking into. i would respectfully like my name added to others who have reported this problem and are demanding a recall. as i understand it, this could become a very serious problem and even involve a fire. i would appreciate your serious consideration when looking into this recall. thank you for your serious consideration.

Brake and abs dash light illuminate. once the vehical is shut off then restarted the lights do not come one for a little while, but they do come back on. the codes that come up are directed to faulty abs module. we were told there is a possible fire risk involved due to manufacture's defects. tonya glover 510 3rd ave collins, ia 50055

About 2 plus years ago, my van started having an electrical malfunction. shortly after starting the vehicle and sometimes in the middle of driving, the computer would beep and flash the message check traction control. along with this, the abs and e-brake lights would come on, and also the trac off light. i could clear the message from the computer by hitting reset, but the warning lights would stay on until i shut the vehicle off. it happens almost daily now, especially when it's humid and hot outside. about 3 weeks ago, the speedometer and tacometer started to stick or not move. sometimes, they go up to 30-40mph, then stop working. other times, they just don't move at all. the problem also affects the accuracy of the odometer and gas gauge. the vehicle can be traveling at 70mph, but be reading 40mph, and then the odometer is marking miles traveled according to 40mph. so, now my odometer needs to be reset as well. i never know when this is going to happen, and being a mother of two children and pregnant with #3, i need my vehicle to be safe and reliable. i found a website that has recall information, and i'm not the only one experiencing this issue with their windstar. i was already part of the rear axle and subframe recall, and that was scary enough to know my vehicle could have fallen apart while i was driving it. there is a possibility of electrical fire with this, as one of the probable and likely causes of this is the wires are self-grounding on some metal part in the engine or behind the dash. if any fluids leaked on these exposed and self-grounding wires, one spark could set it off. please make sure this problem is addressed in a timely manner, as there are several of these vehicles on our nation's roads.

To whom it may concern, i am seriously concerned about this vehicle and the way i am treated by ford motors. the car suddenly while driving on highway came to a complete stop and almost flipped. thank god that injuries were not that serious but the car is now total loss. after taking the car to private mechanics, it was determined that subframe broke and the axels, control arms all broke. it was then discovered that this was part of a recall. car was towed to ford motors dealership. a request has been made to provide me with safety report on the vehicle. ford and its dealership forced me out of their dealership and kicked me out. the car is their for months and i have been sending ford online messages via email and phone but they are not willing to buy the car or give me its value nor fix the car. i have been without a car for more than 4 months now and ford is not doing the least to even trade the car for another one. i am seriously disappointed.

My girlfriend was driving the car and with no warning the rear axle just snapped in half. ford says it was fixed by the previous owner and that the recall had expired and now i will have to pay out of pocket.well if it was reinforced and still snapped i believe the work was not done properly and ford should be responsible. she could have been seriously injured.

I have been having problems with the abs light and emergency brake light being on intermittently. sometimes they are both on when i turn the car on. at times they stay on and there are times when it goes off. there are also instances where only the brake light is on and stays on even though the emergency brakes are disengaged. my husband recently changed some sensors and said he notices some break fluid leakage. i am scared to drive my car and fear for my safety and that of my family. i do not want to have a car fire. please look into this situation as soon as possible. after reviewing your database, i see that i am not the only person having this issue.

Every since i purchased my '02 windstar, i have had problems with the abs and brakes. i've had the brakes fixed numerous times and both lights still comes on while i'm driving. i had a brake fluid leak from the rear. my dvd and stereo both short- circuited on a month or two after they were installed. sometimes if i come to a light to stop for a while, when the light turns green, i'll try to give it some gas but it becomes real hesitant and takes a while to pick up speed. the drivers behind me would start to get frustrated with me holding up traffic. also, when i cut the ac on it takes power away from my vehicle and it threatens to cut off, so i don't turn it on. i also have to replace two oxygen sensors on it. i believe that my abs module is bad as well. i feel that i am putting more money into it than it's worth. please help me.

Losing brake fluid unable to detect where is leaking. no leakage on the ground. had brakes changed twice in 12 months. braking distance increases sporadically. abs and brake light comes on intermittently - more quickly during the summer months than winter months.

I was driving my 2002 ford windstar at approximately 60mph when it began to shake violently. suddenly the rear axle snapped. i almost went into a spin but fortunately i was able to keep control of the vehicle and not hit or kill anyone. god was watching. the axle snapped to the left of center just like countless other windstars that i have read about.

My windstar went to a ford dealership a few months ago for the subframe recall and rear axle recall. it was said to be in great condition and fitted with the repair kits. subsequently, my husband went under the car for unrelated reasons and saw the subframe bracket was not holding anything because the passengers side subframe was rusted away. when he took it to the local dealership the mechanic stated that it should be left with him because it was not safe to drive. my husband requested they remove the back axel bracket which they did only to reveal a crack in the axel. we were told by several employees that it should be replaced. however the dealership contacted ford di dept who rejected the claim based on the fact that it was poor workmanship of the dealership and the dealership blames ford. needless to say they gave me back my car with a rusted subframe and cracked axel stating that it was in fact repaired to fords standard. my husband has pictures of both the subframe w kit and axel. it is difficult to understand how ford can deem it safe to drive? in addition to the original recall, i believe ford is covering up the defect and attempting to get away with putting recall kits on cars that may be unsafe. i would like to be sure my car is infact safe.

Front right coil spring broken and left side show fatigue in same area. vehicle had other recalls due to high-corrosion areas
09/01/2011180000
The windstar is my only means of transportation and when driving it the speedometer will freak out and ended up breaking the needle on the tacometer and this leads to the theft light popping up when i am driving down the road. this acted up when i was going over and intersection and ended up stalling the vehicle right in the middle and while a car was coming from one way luckly i got the vehicle started and time and got out of there but after taking it to the dealership they couldnt even figure out what could be wrong i dont feel like loosing my life.

All the time when i'm driving the abs/brake light stays on, the vehicle does not stop properly. the #10 and 15 fuse blows out regularly and causes the air, odometer, overdrive to not work. i smell burning electricity, and see smoke coming from hood while driving. some morning my van doesn't start due to battery drainage. check engine light will not stay off causing it not pass inspection. brake fluid leaking. i truly believe that the break fluid leak is causing these problems, and it looks like i'm not the only person. with the speed control recall the abs module and ecm needed to be included
05/27/201172384
While driving we noticed a loud popping sound and the car pulled to the side. we stopped at a firestone and they showed me that the subframe had rusted through on the passenger side and the motor mount was completely broken loose. they recommended that we go to ford. we took it to the ford dealer and they said they knew of the problem but our minivan was not included in the recall because it is here in florida. i have serious problems with my spine and the doctor told me that a small accident could be fatal. i called the number ford service manager gave me. ford refused to help. even though the subframe corroded and broke on the passenger side as was the concern with recalled vans, they flatly refused to do anything -- not even provide a discount on labor! since this car is here in florida, it is very obvious that the corrosion must have been caused by a defect in manufacture. i need the van to get to physical therapy and to take care of my family. it is not just that i should pay the $1700-$1800 that ford estimates will be the cost to fix their error and am left without transportation. if i had not noticed the popping sound, i could have had a serious accident and been dead or paralyzed from my neck down!

Abs brake light comes on all the time when i'm driving the 2002 ford windstar sel. it started last year. i've replaced all the pads & shoes and bled the brake fluid. but it's still on. i've read many complaints about this online and wanted to add my complaint to the list hoping for a ford recall.

I'm one of the lucky folks that has a 2002 windstar sitting in my local ford lot waiting on the rear axle to come in so it can be repaired. what i wanted you to know is that my subframe is very rusty too. i haven't had a failure yet, but my mechanic suggested i get it undercoated to try to stop it from deteriorating even more. i'm very concerned as it's my wife's car usually, and i think ford should be required to inspect each one of these cars while they're sitting in their lots to determine if failure is imminent (like what they did with the axles). that would be very little to ask and easily done since they're still telling us the axles won't be available till possibly late march. thank you./cgs

In my 2002 windstar the abs and brake lights come on while driving and will go off only to come back on another time while driving. in 2009 we had the safety recall taken care of, but it did not resolve the issue. now i am noticing while i have the van running, heat and radio on, the radio and clock lights will go on and off. also, the back doors do not always unlock and it will take several times of pressing the power door locks to unlock before they will unlock. i am fearful there will be an issue and i will need to get my daughter out quickly and won't be able to because of the door lock issue.

I was driving to reno nevada from calfornia when i started to smell smoke, i pulled over and open the hood and i seen that my plug that goes under the brake fluid box was smoking really bad. i let it cool down and i drove for another 10 min into the road and i notice that my fuse had burn out , at the same time i started to smell something burning. when i notice more smoke coming from under my hood i pulled over.i open the hood and i notice it was from the same plug the abs plug that is. well it was melting. i call a friend to make sure it was alright to unplug the abs plug off he said yea. well im just writting this cause i notice also that brake fluid was dripping into the plug .. to me it seem that it was shorting it out. so please for our safety keep this in mind that this could start a fire..

I own a 2002 ford windstar and had recall 09s09 performed at my local dealership last november and now my cruise control does not work at all. also for the last 6-8 months my (yellow) abs and (red) brake lights come on and off on my dash. my power window on the driver side works only when it wants to and the passenger side window can be rolled down from the passenger side but has to rolled up from the driver side. and last but not least the rear door lock buzzes every time the doors lock which is every time i put the vehicle in gear.

Abs light and brake lights switch on and off in my 2002 windstar with no warning for the past two years. van is at 110k miles, and seems to drive fine. because the warning lights keep going on and off, i don't know if the warning system is actually working. this is very frustrating because i don' know how safe my van is. i had teh brakes checked completely when this started and was told they were fine....another mechanic suggested the abs module was going bad?

2002 ford windstar 114,356 miles driver side rear axle has a hole rusted in bottom of the u shaped axle

In september 2009 the mechanic at the dealer where i bought my windstar told me the abs module is bad and that i need a new one and have to go to the ford dealer directly and pay around $800.00 and have it reset by their computer. this has cost me lots of money because i already spent $600.00 on rear brakes because of not knowing this is a common problem with ford windstar.also, immediately after purchasing this vehicle in 2007, the locks on the van don't work. sometimes it locks by remote and sometimes the locks all work, but, the driver side. this is a pain. now, i have a problem with the 'check engine' light coming on and i have had various mechanics try to reset the light and it will come back on again and again! i have spent hundreds on this van to have it in shape, but always something arises. despite the cruise control recall, i have not had any problem with it and use it all the time, but will have to have it done. i wish ford to fix all the problems this type of van has and so i won't have to spend hundreds, again, or i will have to get rid of it, which is a shame because i really love the tv, even though the screen give me problems and the vcr no longer works.

Abs dashboard light -- for over a year now we have been dealing with a abs dashboard light which comes on and off. the majority of the time it has been on. we have had computers hooked up trying to diagnose the issue with false diagnosis. in addition to the abs light the engine light also will come on and off with the same outcomes, sometimes vehicle will show hesitating during cold weather and then light will emerge. in the past few months we have started having an issue with the right tail light remaining on after the vehicle has been turned off. we tryed several different remedies with this problem too but eventually it too returns. if left alone the light will eventually shut itself off but makes the red tail light shield very hot to the touch. we have been told that all of the above problems it may be related and may be a relay probleml . this has been a very frustrating problem and i worry about the abs problem being a safety problem. i have two children who ride in this vehicle constantly with me, one of them has heart problems and is on coumadin therapy and even a minor incident could be major and life threatening to him. i ask you to please look into this problem. i am aware that there are many others experiencing the same problems with their ford windstar minivans too, a simple search on the internet shows many frustrated consumers. thank you in advance for your help and investigation into this matter.. take care.

2002 ford windstar rear axial assembly/ axial beam. van has 120,000 mileage. rear axial beam sheared in half during highway travel, catastrophic failure caused van to almost roll over and skid out of control, since back tires, no longer connected, were flopping and wobbling. skidded over 200 feet. no injuries luckily. upon view of axial assemble it was rusted from the inside. insurance did not cover this mechanical failure. $600 dollars to repair with used part. pittsburgh pa.

The morning of july 11, 2010, the abs control module on our 2002 windstar suffered an internal fire due to brake fluid leaked from the bad switch, resulting in a loss of proper brake function and no readings from the speedometer, tachometer, and odometer (as well as multiple warning lights). this occurred several weeks after having had the brake pressure deactivation switch recall performed (nhtsa campaign id 09v399000, action number ea08021). the local ford dealership which had performed the initial recall work refused to repair or replace the module under the recall or as a warranty claim, stating that it was not part of the recall, nor was it apparently damaged at the time of the brake switch repair. i subsequently removed, opened and examined the control module (8/28/2010), and found blackened brake fluid present inside the module at the connector pins. i also found evidence of significant burning around the pins at the connections to the printed circuit board. this evidence included the blackened fluid, severe discoloration, and lifted traces, all of which are clearly apparent in photos of the module interior. luckily, it appears that an internal trace burned through and interrupted the fault current prior to the failure becoming a runaway fire event. at this time the vehicle has not been repaired, and is sitting idle. i have kept the failed control module for examination as necessary.

My passenger side rear break pads wear out - down to bare metal each year and i keep asking that they look into it being something other than my braking habits because it is only one brake. i just saw on the news that the rear axils on my particular make and model are breaking and there is supposed to be a recall. i drive through rural areas long distance and i am very concerned for my safety. i wonder if there may be a connection between the faulty axil and my break not fitting right and wearing out every year. now i have a strange sound coming from the back of my van either the middle or passenger side and i am afraid i will suffer a terrible accident. i have been unemployed over 2 years because i couldn't get a job while in college and graduated in a recession....i have no credit cards and can't afford the mechanic's charge to inspect it or fix it.

I have a ford windstar 2002. its abs and brake lights come on during summer. in the recall last year, a ford dealer changed the deactivation switch on the car. but after that, i still have the same problem: in warm weather, abs and brake lights come on while driving.

 1. the car stops any time while driving 2. that happens between 2 and 5 times a week 3. when that happens, i put the car on park then restart it. i took the car to mullimax ford dealer in apopka, fl several times. i paid for diagnostics, they cannot find the reason or the problem. theyy usually perform necessary repairs, but the problen is still not solved. recently i was making a left turn when the car died. severall motorist stepped on their brake to avoid striking my vehicle. the problem was on initial stage, whe the vehicle was repaired for another recall on 11-25-09

I own a 2002 ford windstar. i bought the vehicle new in 2002. it currently only has only 75,398 miles. approximately, 1 week age my wife drove my son to his soccer and baseball practice. while she was driving home with my 2 other sons in the van, she noticed that there was suddenly a problem with the back wheels. luckily, she made it home without any injuries. after she parked the van, she noticed that the wheels were smoking and were slightly turned in. i had it towed to our mechanic. a few days later, the mechanic called and stated that the rear axel was cracked. he said that he never seen anything like it, especially on a vehicle with only 75, 398 mile. he said that he was going to call around and try to find a used part. after a week (of not having a vehicle), the mechanic called and stated that he called everywhere for a used part. however, he was not successful in locating the part. once again, he stated that he never experienced not being able to locate a part. he said that it was probably due to the fact that so many other vehicles had the same problem. he said that he could put a new part on, but it would cost approximately $1,000. i called the dealer where i purchased the van and they stated that since the warranty has expired, there is nothing they could do for me. after doing research and trying to find a used part on my own, i have noticed that i am not alone with this problem. in fact, there is a class action law suit filed against ford motor company. i think that this matter could easily be resolved if ford were required to have a recall to rectify the problem. i realize that i am only 1 of a few thousand that have made this problem known. however, i wonder how many ford windstar owners who have not experienced this problem yet or who have elected to do nothing about it. it make me very furious to know that this problem exists and was made aware of, and nothing is being done about it. how many lives will it cost before something is done?

2002 ford windstar; the rear axle broke in two while driving at 40 mph. both tires tilted out, axle cracked a little to the left of center while looking at it from the rear of the vehicle. fortunately my wife was able to control the van. i understand this has happened in hundreds of windstars, and something needs to be done before people die, if they have not already.

I pulled into driveway and put car in park and went into back of my windstar to check to see if the aircontioning vents were working per the request of my son. i was back there for several minutes.i got out and was standing outside the drivers open front door to turn off car.my son was in back seat with his door open and out of seat belt. while standing next to open door my car started to back out of drive way while it was in park. i tried to stop it with my arm by trying to jump into car to turn it off since my son was in car.it kept rolling down my driveway as i tried to catch car.it stopped by crashing into my neighbor's car that was parked in the street.the car was still in park.police came.filed claim with insurance company.i went to hospital for my foot that was dragged on pavement during my pursuit to catch my car. i notified the dealer and they told me to contact ford directly. i filled out claim and i just recieved letter saying they can't determine if there was a defect.i read in the paper last week this happened to a woman with a ford expediton but her car ran over someone.also a ford serviceman just said keep putting emergency brake on and never get out of car with car running.i was also told i cant' have it checked out becuase ford wants orginal parts and won't pay for anything until we can prove a defective part. i am very concerned about the safety of my vehicle. since the accident, i have been following the ford's service man's advice by always making sure parking break is on and not allowing anyone to get out of the car until it is turned off. i have two childeren and need my car checked immediatley.it is very fortuante that no one was outside playing when my car starting backing down the driveway while in park.
