 Odi has received 134 consumer complaints, 285 manufacturer complaints, and 137 manufacturer warranty claims alleging incidents of engine compartment fire in model year (my) 1995 thru 2003 ford windstar vehicles.two of the odi complaints allege the fires caused structural damage to the complainant's home.of the 134 odi complaints, 36 allege the fire occurred while the vehicle was parked, 72 allege the fire occurred while the vehicle was running and 26 of the complaints do not specify if the vehicle was running or not.further review of the odi complaints shows that 72 allege that the speed control deactivation switch (scds) caused the fire and 10 allege that the scds leaked brake fluid on to the abs module resulting in the fire.there were 52 that did not identify a cause or that identified miscellaneous other causes.odi has also received 89 complaints ( not counted in this resume) alleging that the scds developed a brake fluid leak.thirteen of these complaints say that the leak at the scds resulted in braked fluid reaching the abs module.this pe has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea) to further evaluate the cause of the fires and assess the scope, frequency, and safety consequences of the alleged defect.

 Ea08-021 is closed with ford's actions in recall 09v-399 recalling approximately 4.5 million vehicles equipped with texas instruments speed control deactivation switches (scds).with this recall ford has now recalled all of the approximate 16 million ford model vehicles that were manufactured from my 1992 through 2003 with a texas instruments scds.nhtsa will continue to monitor the recalled vehicles to ensure remedies installed by ford tomitigate the potential for scds related fires are effective.the agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.see attached closing report for further details.

 I purchased a 2003 ford windstar used in october of 2012. it had 114,000 miles on it well from day one i have had a problem. the rpm, speed and gas on the dash go crazy. it says i am doing 20 mph when i know i am going faster than that. the rpm will go and up and down. i was driving to work and the brake light and trac off light came on. i tapped the break and it went away. 5 miles later i was making a right turn and the car just stopped moving. could not go reverse or in drive. i had the car towed and was told it was the transmission yet i had no signs that it was the transmission. i was told the other issues were an electrial problem and would cost me any where from $700.00-1500.00 plus up to $2500.00 to fix the transmission. started doing research and found that these are very common problems with the windstar. also i have problems with my lock on the driver side door. sometimes it will not lock and other times will not open. you have to climb through the van to unlock it. they need to recall this especially the electrial problems...this is unsafe! i will never buy another ford....

 The battery light comes on occasionally. when it comes on, the electrical system has reduced power. this is confirmed by the headlights dimming, wipers moving at slower speed. if i turn the ignition off and then restart, the battery light goes off and everything functions normally. if i don't turn the car off, it will die in a short time. *tr

 There was a safety recall initiated by ford for corrosion of the engine cradle - 2003 ford windstar structure: frame and members:underbody shields nhtsa campaign #11v030000. ford repaired the left side only, leaving the right side rusted and now several significant rust holes have appeared on the right side. ford disclaims any responsibility saying that they made the repair properly but i claim they made the repair inadequately. bad metal is bad metal and regardless of the fact that the holes were discovered over a year later is inapplicable as good metal does not rust through to the point of creating a safety hazard. if the engine cradle fails, the engine will fall from the vehicle, potentially while moving. gas will spew across the road and a fireball will ignite. other drivers will either hit the engine, swerve to miss it and hit other vehicles, and/or get caught in the inferno which will cause significant damage, human harm and needless deaths. ford initiated this safety recall because there was this safety issue and the issue remains. safety was not improved by simply repairing one side of the engine cradle allowing the other side to corrode to the point of sizeable rust holes being created in a short period of time following the initial inadequate repair. once a safety recall is initiated, it is in the best interests of the public to ensure that the repair is properly and completely made and therefore that the safety issue is fully resolved.

 First of all there is a short located by the steering wheel around the air bag. i thought it was the battery so i changed it and a couple of days later my van would not start. i took it to the ford dealer and they couldn't find the problem, so i took it to an old man that just did electrical problems on automobiles. he said it was a bad wire in the steering column and he said to repair it would cost a lot of money, so he bypassed some wires and i have not had any problems since, but when you open the driver side door, the door chimes, like when you leave the keys in the ignition. he only charged me $75. also i would be driving and the interior lights would turn on and off by themselves. this has been happening for a long time. also the abs warning lights have been on for a while and my mechanic said it is a bad abs steering box. to replace it would cost around $1000. i have had also the head gasket replaced because the ford dealer could not find what was wrong with it while it was still under warranty. it was idling very rough while stopped at a light, also when in parked. it cost me about $600 to replace it. i took it to pep boys and they found out what was wrong with it. i also had the fuel pump replaced, because it kept shutting off while at the grocery stores and had it towed by aaa 3 times in about a year. bottom line, i will never buy another ford vehicle while i am alive. they are good for the first couple of years, then they start failing. so sad, because i have been a ford guy for over 35 years. *tr

 My instrument panel keeps going crazy. the rpm needle is now pointing down into the dash. the speedometer usually is not working correctly, it will say that i am doing 20 mph, when i am doing more like 45-50. the gas guage sometimes says that it is on empty, when i have a full tank of gas. sometimes the needles work, sometimes they don't (with the exception of the rpm needle...it hasn't moved from that buried in the dash spot for a couple of months now), sometimes the speedometer needle goes all the way to the right and then gets buried in the dash also, so far though, each time, it has came back...even though it rarely registers even close to the correct speed. the repair for this is going to be about $700 is what i was told. i do not have that kind of money, and i am constantly praying that my 17 year old daughter who has to drive it sometimes, does not get into an accident because she is going too fast, and has no clue how fast she is actually going, or one of us may get a speeding ticket. i have looked at websites and seen that a lot of people are having these problems, so ford should do the right thing and make a recall, before someone is seriously injured or even killed!!! also, not sure if it is related or not, but the abs light stays on.

 Tl-the contact owns a 2003 ford windstar. the contact attempted to start the ignition repeatedly however, the engine failed to operate. and the battery required a jump start. the failure recurred numerous times on separate occasions. the vehicle had not been diagnosed. there was a technical service bulletin pertaining to the defect under nhtsa item number: 636000(electrical system:battery). the manufacturer was notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000. kmj

 Abs and brake dashboard lights warning that abs system is inoperative, speed control system also inoperative. break pressure deactivation switch leaking oil. this leaking oil has traveled down abs wiring harness all the way to the abs controller. unsafe condition. ford dealership has refused to repair this dangerous condition as a manufacturing/design defect and stated there currently is no recall issued for this very serious problem!!

 I have had mulitiple problems with my 2003 windstar sel to include complete failure of the vacum system where brakes, power steering didn't work had to have towed. the dealership could not fix and did not have a recall. hoses in this system kept coming off. interior lights kept flashing on without any being turned on. also the passenger door is open light stays on. along with abs/brake light stays on. i have taken my van in to have brakes checked. there was no problem with brakes. i have maintenance done on regualar basis. problems started with 50,000 miles. i am a single woman and need reliable transportation which this van is not. when is ford going to recall for electical problems? dealership is of no help, only want to charge for something they can't fix. i took to dealership when front passenger window didn't open. dealership stated that it needed a new motor. i knew better as this had happen before. took home and after a little bump in the road window started working agian. part of the crappy workmanshp ford used to put together. also dealership stated there was no recall for the problem with vacum system which i was told was a design problem. ford needs to address all the problems associated with this model. i wonder how many others have this same problem?

 Recently issued recall of 2004 ford co. minivans for input shaft failure, all ford windstars including 2003 models have the same issue. freestar van is nothing but a name change for the same poor unsafe vehicle. along with the many safety issues, owners should be compensated for the repairs made on substandard vehicle. including the frame issues, brakes issue, electrical and engine quality.

 I have had no transmission issues with my 2003 ford windstar van. i drove home from work early this morning (3:30am.) i went to leave for an appointment at noon on the same day, and nothing. i started my van, attempted to put it in gear and nothing!! no warning, no nothing!! i have never towed with this vehicle (it doesn't even have a hitch,) the total weight of people riding in it has been 350 pounds. there has been no stress on this engine as i don't live in mountainess areas. i am a single mom of 4 little kids, receiving no child support, working pt, just able to pay the bills, and ford needs to fix this issue!! i have also had numerous other 'problems' but nothing so major the vehicle couldn't be driven (interior lights flashing, blender door actuator going out 3x in a year, rough ideal especially when cold, back door handles not working from inside, back doors so hard to open and close, i can hardly do it, back wiper worked one day then just stopped and hasn't worked since, one back window opens and closes only when it feels like it.) i also just put $70 in gas in this vehicle! ugh!!

 2003 ford windstar 71,000 miles - bought new for $35,000 in december 2003, i purchased a new 2003 ford windstar. i am the only only driver of this van, to and from work and a few road trips. in the beginning a few things went wrong but i wasn't too concerned at the time. since then, here is a list of things that has gone wrong with this van: 1.no heat - bendor actuator 2.driver's side side window wouldn't roll up or down (fixed) 3.passenger side window and back windows do not work 4.interior lights go on and off 5.gasket replaced on engine because car was dying when i came to a stop. ($450) 6.rear window defroster doesn't work 7.rusting out by back tires 8.transmission failure $2,800. fluid from the radiator got into the transmission fluid!  There is some kind of malfunction in the 2003 ford windstars. the windows will stop working all at once or at random times. the lights will stop working and then start again. the radio will stop working and start again. these are all on random fuses. ford says they can not fix the problem if they do not experience it. the problems will last for a few minutes or up to days at a time. the cruise control also will not engage at times. these are all getting power as the cruise control will tell you it is ready to engage and when you try to engage it , it says its been deactivated. the radio will eject or load cd but will not come on. we have not found a solution yet but feel this can be a problem if the lights go out at the wrong time. even the windows not opening can be a problem. if a bee or something else gets stuck in the van you can not always stop to get it out. as my husband and daughter are very allergic to them it is a danger not being able to open them. in looking up solutions i have noticed a great many other people with the same problem

 As i was driving from portsmouth nh to somersworth nh i noticed that the speedometer stopped working,the odometer had nothing but lines, no numbers, the overdrive light started blinking and the abs and brake lights came on. i also noted that smoke has been coming from under the hood when i stop at a light or stop sign. these symptoms match what has been recorded on line as follows, the brake pressure differential deactivation switch (scds) (2b264) located under the master cylinder (behind the air filter) over time develops a leak. this causes a short and a fuse trip, fuse #10 if the engine is on. this leak also causes brake fluid to wick down two wires to the abs brake module (2c219). the fluid accumulates on the (always on) power connectors for the abs brake system which are powered by fuses 101 and 102 and are both 40 amp. the fluid attacts moisture, road salt and leads to a fire when the fluid and moisture act as conductor between the hot leads and ground. this switch has been the subject of other ford recalls, just not the windstar van yet. below is a picture of the switch in question. notice the fluid that leaked on the part below it. this switch will cause cruise control problems, speedometer, odometer and abs brake system problems. i will not allow other family members to operate this vehicle and it appears that the ford motor company will not fix this issue even though there was a recall for this exact issue, recall #09s09 because they indicate that my vehicle is not covered under this recall. the recall states clearly that this issue can cause a vehicle fire with or without the vehicle running.

 Interior lights have been intermitant for several years, drivers side auto lock stopped working completely, constant draining of the battery, must carry jumper cables.. third battery in three years, now problem is weekly. thinking this issue may have to do with the fact that the interior lights go on and off at random unexplained times. sometimes remaining on once the vehicle is off and all doors are completely closed. problem with abs and brake light coming on at randoms times in addition to the check engine light never staying reset. charging system lights intermitantly comes on.. sometimes they come on and off but if they remain on cause the car to hesitate or just quit on you. car is a extreme safety hazard at intersections becuase of hesitation and stalling. my wife (her primary vehicle) has been stranded in two intersections where the car died completely. my wife is terrified for her safety everytime we are in this vehicle. i have finally had enough and am filing a complaint since i have read from numerous sources that i am one of thousands and thousands having this same issue. please consider the safety of the drivers of these vehicles and subsequently any innocent motorist or pedestrian who may become injured from these safety issues. thank you. ford is obviously aware of these problems and reports and it appears is unwilling to research a fix, or intitiate a recall until enough bodies pile up on the side of the road in vehicle accidents, having a vehicle fail completely twice in 3 months in the middle of ohama nebraska intersections is very dangerous, and should be evaluated or recalled. i have replaced baterries, and alternator, fuses, and many dollars in diagnostic fees to family ase certified mechanic who is shaking his head. does ford know what the problem is and just does not want to admit it and complete another factory recall on this vehicle.

 I have a 2003 ford windstar se model that has cost well over a thousand dollars in repair. i have replaced 2 batteries and two altenators, and the problems still have not been fixed. i now have no way of knowing how fast i am going or how much gas is in my tank. the electical systems need to be recalled on these vans. people on line are complaing about the problems and their vans failing because of fualty electrical. i use my van to transport my family and do not feel safe on this van. i have had all the nessecary recalls taken care on it. when i drive this van the spedometer is not correct, i think i am doing a certain speed but when compared to other vehicles it is clearly not the speed intended. my gas gauge is always wrong i fill up on gas and it stays full one day and the next it's almost empty. i now have to keep and eye on my milage to know how much fuel i have. the doors never close properly and and my liftgate ajarsignalis always on. the doors do not lock or or unlock when i need them too, which has become a hazard, becuase i can't leave anything in my van for fear of it being stolen. this van has had been to the local dealership and cost me well over 400 dollars to replace an already brand new altenator and new battery which cost over 80 bucks, plus the two hundred dollars for the first altenaotr and another 100 for the first battery. the heat doesn't work properly either. this van is a nightmare of electrical problems that need to be addressed by ford asap. this van has left me and my children stranded on the side of the road in the country and i will not put up with it any more!!!!!!!

 The vehicles electronic antilock brake module has failed. there have been numerous warnings and notices that brake fluid leakage onto the module , is a known cause for early failure. all my dashboard lights turn on within a few minutes of operating the vehicle. the dealer did confirm this failure and suggested a replacement that is not under warranty of course. this does not seem right, that a known and acknowledged vehicle design problem with the gasket on the brake fluid resevoir leaking fluid on the module and causing premature failure is not a mandated repair and not simply something left up to the manufacturer. i don't have the funds for this costly repair

 Intermittent abs & brake light have appeared a few months after we bought the van but far enough after our used car warranty period. i just found out today 1/10/11 that it needs the electronic control unit replaced which effects the abs system. estimated repair/replacement cost is about $850 due to the specific syncing to the vehicle that needs to take place before during and after as well as labor getting to it and installing it... this is not something that is wear and tear. i've only had my van for 3 years. apparently the heat makes it expand and contract placing stress on the solder joints cracking the solder joints. we should reconsider the placement of this control module on the vehicle and/or the materials that encase it. not sure if any connection to the wiring harness or not. i'm thoroughly frustrated. it's currently in for the rear axle inspection repair/replacement warranty only reason i found out.

 Gas guage doesn't read correctly. all gages stops working while driving. abs and tcs stopped working correctly in 2008. lights have been on warning of them not working. drivers side passanger door will not work correctly. check advance track warning light stays on. this has been checked, but light stays on. rpm guage stays at maximum. often while driving, it feels as if we have the emergency break on. we have to change tires often. when i apply the breaks the vehicle will either not stop, or makes a grinding sound before it does. i have had the breaks checked and the break pads are fine.

 System failure, speed control, speedometer, odometer, heater/airconditioner after looking up online what caused my systems to fail, i went to sinclair to purchase the part. i was told by parts mngr that it was on re-call for that and i would have to have it fixed by their service dept. they confirmed this was on re-call and had me return later that afternoon. after four and a half hours i was asked to come back that they were having difficulty fixing the problem. i attempted to make an appt later the next day and was told it was too late that i did not bring my vehicle in in a timely manner and they will no longer fix my vehicle. their are no expiration dates on this re-call. i have received a customer service receipt explaining what they did and stating that they strive to give the best customer service. what a joke, they left me with a vehicle that is not safe to drive in this condition, after taking up my whole afternoon. i responded with a very disheartened lack of satisfaction and was referred to ford headquarter. i was told that this was never a re-call item by ford. if this was handled acurately the first time, my car would already be fixed. dave would never have let this happen, he built this dealership on the concept of good customer service. if his team made an error, he would fix it on principal even if it meant he ate the cost. i guess his reputation was buried with him. i will be looking to purchase a vehicle in january and i will purchase from someplace else. dave sinclair ford 7466 s. lindbergh blvd st. louis, mo 63125 phone: (888) 746-2524 please help us get our van fixed

 Where to start? almost seem like to many problems to list. we will start with the constant draining and replacement of the battery. new battery every few months. thinking this issue may have to do with the fact that the interior lights go on and off at random unexplained times. sometimes remaining on once the vehicle is off and all doors are completely closed. problem with abs and brake light coming on at randoms times in addition tp the checl charging system light. sometimes they come on and off but if they remain on cause the car to hesitate or just quit on you. i have 3 kids and am terrified for our safety everytime we are in this vehicle. i have finally had enough and am filing a complaint since i have read from numerous sources that i am one of thousands and thousands having this same issue. please consider the safety of the drivers of these vehicles and subsequently any innocent motorist or pedestrian who may become injured from these safety issues. thank you.

 I have a 2003 ford windstar and have had nothing but problems with it. since purchasing the car i have had issues with the electrical system or something which ford claims they can not figure out what the problem is- all they kept saying is you need to pay $ for diagnostic tests which will probably not even tell them the answer to the problems because in order to catch the problem they need to catch it just as it happens which is near impossible. long story short-i have put nothing but $ into this van which i feel should be recalled because after doing research on all the problems there are alot of people that are complaining about the exact same issues for the exact same year and model van. as of now i am stuck with no car to get to work and to get my kids to school because the van won't start and it had to be towed to the shop once again. events leading up to the failure- domes lights flickering on and off at random while driving even with the switch in the off position, fuses getting blown from opening windows, automatic door locks only working when it wants to, alternator and battery failure, transmission failure, and now they have no clue why it is not starting. failures happen every year since i have had the van. i have had the alternator and battery replaced every year and had the transmission replaced as well. i have had problems with the ac and heat and the brake and abs lights coming on and off at random. i have been stranded on the side of the road with my children and just can't afford to do this anymore.

 I have a 2003 ford windstar affected by the latest recall concerning a faulty switch that leaks and can cause fires. i took my van into a ford dealership yesterday for this problem. they replaced the switch but that faulty switch has ruined the abs module. the cost to replace that is over $1200. that should be covered in the recall too. an ap report yesterday by tom krisher and stephen manning states that nhtsa also identified four reports of leaking fluid damaging the antilock brake control module, resulting in a fire. while i am not aware of a fire i do know there have been instances when i park my van that the front end seems extremely hot. i plan to have my garage check for signs of fire or overheating due to this problem. as of last week my speedometer has intermittent problems of not working, particularly when the engine is hot. the abs and brake light are both on all the time. *tr

 Since we got our 2003 ford windstar new in december, 2002, we have always had an issue with constantly needing to fill the brake fluid. the ford dealership said they couldn't find anything wrong. in feb, 2008 our abs and brake light came on. took it to a firestone repair shop, they fixed and akjusted the brakes and they said it was a problem with the brake sensor and that there was nothing wrong with the brakes when they were finished, just the light was on and we needed to replace the sensor. as it was extremely costly and they told us there was nothing further wrong with the brakes, we choose not to replace it. in june 2008 our cruise control stopped working. we again took it in and they could not figure out what was wrong. two weeks ago, august, 2009, we had all new brakes put on. just yesterday, august 21, 2009, our brake fluid was almost empty. we took it back to the place we had the brakes put on, and they just filled the brake fluid and said there was an air bubble. upon driving home from the repair shop, we noticed that our speedometer and odometer had stopped working and the overdrive light was now flashing. so, we have the following warning lights on our control panel: abs, brake, overdrive; and the following items not working: abs, speedometer, odometer, overdrive; and a continually disappearing brake fluid problem. don't actually know if the abs works or not. *tr

 With no prior problems to report, i was suddenly unable to put my vehicle in gear after starting it. the gear-shifter felt somewhat loose as if i were parked at an incline without putting the hand brake on. however, i was parked on level ground. after turning the vehicle off, i was finally able to get the vehicle out of park and into neutral where i was able to start it and put it into drive. whenever i placed it in park it was extremely difficult to get it back into any other gear however, it would randomly go into gear as if there was no problem. but once placed back into park it would get stuck again. now there is all kinds of wacky electrical stuff going on...window swithches aren't functioning, no tail lights, fuel gage is not functioning and the remote alarm entry only unlocks the drivers side door. there is a clicking in the left side of the steering column when trying to utilize any of the listed electrical functions. *tr

 Purchased a used van from local dealer. it has a dvd player already installed (not factory installed). approx. 6 months later, i complained to service assoc. while getting an oil change, that my radio does not get stations clearly. maybe there's a problem with the antennae. he said, it's a ford thing in 2005 i told same service assoc. that the 'door is ajar' light keeps coming on. the trunk. hatch light comes on and stays on even when back is closed. and the interior lights go on and off. and the dvd player no longer worked. he said it could be the contacts, and he would clean them but there's 'no guarantee. the next service check, i told him that the lights stay on after the doors are closed and i 'm afraid my battery will go dead. also that the power locks now go on and off while driving around. i was told that it was probably an electrical problem but that it was not under any warranty and it would be very costly,it could take hours and hours of looking for the problem and it may never be found. i went home and my husband purchased and changed the contact thing for the back door. the light for that back hatch then stopped staying on when the door was closed. i was very concerned about the locks going up and down while driving my three small children around. how could i know if the locks were engaged or not??? if there is a 'short; could a fire start?? i called the ford co. consumer number, explained my problems and the rep. just told me that there is no recall for those problems with that van. i said i was afraid for my children's safety, not knowing if the doors were locked or open. when repeated her statement and said to take it to the dealer at my expense. it is now 2008, my locks continue to go up and down while driving randomly, i have to turn all the interior lights off and leave them off, already replaced a battery, back door is open light still stays on!! please advise me!! i am quite frustrated and nervous about this vehicle. *tr

 I noticed the brake lights on my dashboard coming on and disappearing intermittently. i had no idea that my anti lock braking system is sporadically working like so many thousands of other windstar owners. i have three small children that i transport on the highway to and from school and i hate to think of an accident that could be made worse by this situation. don't wait until a child or any other person loses their life over this situation. please recall this module as was done on the ford escape so that lives don't have to be lost. this seems like a severe safety issue. my brakes squeal constantly in hot weather and i fear of a fire breaking out while my dog and three small children are in the car. please let me know if maybe getting in touch with our local news channel or any other media outlet would shed extra light on this problem. *tr

 Last week, my parents were driving my 2003 ford windstar home from breakfast with friends. the friends were following them home, when they saw fire coming from the bottom of the van. they immediately began honking their horn to get my parents to pull over. my dad stopped the van they franticly got themselves and my 4 and 6 year old children out of the van. within 3-4 minutes of everyone getting out, the van was completely engulfed in flames. and the van was reduced to just metal with in less than 10 minutes. we do not know the reason the fire started at this point, but do know that this has been happening with ford vehicles over the past few years. *tr

 My wife and i bought our van after owning a 2000 ford windstar. i used to work for a ford dealership and have only owned ford vehicles most of my life. this van has changed my mind and i will have to think long and hard before buying another ford. our van has been a problem ever since we drove it off the lot. on the way home the right front door window quit working and took two trips to the dealer to repair. like other people have said the electric side doors have a mind of there own opening a closing on there own. there is a loud pop every time the side doors open. after several trips to the dealer nothing was done. the engine keeps revving up to the point that you have to stand on the brakes at a red light to keep it from running into the intersection. the dealer again looked at the several times and nothing has been found. as a former mechanic i have been fooled by this also and have replaced the throttle position sensor hoping that would fix it with no luck. the van would not start at times and would have to be jumped off. the battery was replaced as a precautionary measure because this is my wife and kids in this car and i want to take no chances. finely i was around one time it would not start and found the alternator to be bad. replacing it and nightmare but that another story. now the van still idles high and the check engine light and or loose fuel cap light is on. this van is a piece of junk and i regret the day i bought it. i am in my fourteenth year as a deputy sheriff. i do not want any thing but a ford as my patrol unit after working on and driving every kind of car out there. it will be hard to buy another ford as the vehicle my wife and children ride in. *tr

 My 2003 ford windstar is a nightmare. it started with the dome lights flickering on and off or just staying on. i turned the switch off but the lights still come on. then when i would open the rear windows a fuse would blow causing all windows, radio, etc.. to stop working. i have taken it in several time to have this looked at that they were tired of me coming in and took a black marker to show me which fuse to change when this happens. i have a friend who is a firefighter who said this is extremely unsafe--for the fuse to keep blowing could cause a fire. after this, i woke up one morning and the car wouldn't start out of no where. after towing it in and a few hundred dollars later i ended up replacing the alternator and the battery. as far as the dome lights & the fuse---still flickering and the fuse still blows out--they say they don't know what is wrong with that. after this, while driving with my girls, the car just died out on us. started with the battery light going on then the dash said low battery and then it just stopped running. brought the car in again and they said it was the alternator again. this happened about 1 year after replacing the first one. so once again a few hundred dollars later---they still don't know what is causing this to keep happening. the lights still keep flashing, the fuse still keeps blowing and still no answers. there has got to be something wrong with the electrical system but no one knows what it is. i also found that there are other 2003 windstars with the exact same problems--lights flickering, electrical problems, replacing alternators & batteries, etc...i filed a complaint with ford motor company but they did nothing--they said all i can say is hold on to all your receipts and if a recall is made you will get reimbursed. what does it take to make ford recall these vans?? *tr

 Item # 1 engine light came on and stayed on. vehicle began to idle sluggishly when cold. repair shop investigated and found the lower engine manifold gasket had failed. replaced lower manifold and gasket and problem was corrected. item # 2 battery light flickering. grounding strap between alternator and body frame failed. reads open with multimeter. created by own grounding strap using 10 ga. wire and weather resistant ring-type connectors. no more battery light. item # 3 internal lights flicker randomly and intermittently. slamming all doors does not seem to affect the condition. problem still remains. i turned of the dome light switch to keep from running down my battery and eliminate the mobile disco effect. *tr

 Our 2003 ford windstar has had multiple electrical issues and now a possible bad intake gasket causing a rough idle/check engine light/lean running code. i have no confidence in our local ford dealer as they couldn't repair either the interior lights coming on while driving or intermittent operation of the rear passenger vent window. their answers are always well if it's not acting up when we test it there isn't anything we can do. but i know that they have other vehicles in for the same problems so they do know. we have replaced 2 taillight bulbs and 1 headlight bulb in a vehicle 3 1/2 years old with 34,000 miles. i won't take the rough idle problem in till it's doing it 100% of the time so they can't squirm out of it. they say since we have the extended warranty it would be covered if it's the intake gaskets but i don't trust them. this is our 3rd and last new ford vehicle and they have all had electrical issues and intake/head gasket issues. ford=poor quality and service.*jb

 Dt*: the contact stated the brake and abs lights illuminated without incident. an independent repair shop determined there was no problem with the vehicle and reset the codes. the lights illuminated again and the dealership determined the abs master cylinder needed to be replaced. also, the door ajar light stayed illuminated, but was not been inspected by a mechanic.

 This is a copy of the letter i sent to ford recently. i thought i would try both paths to see if there is any other information out there about this issue. ford motor company customer relationship center p.o. box 6248 dearborn, mi 48126 hello, i have a 2003 ford windstar vin xxxxxxxxx that has a problem. {dealer name} has looked at the problem twice and found nothing. the problem has occurred twice in the last 12 months. so far it has happened within the first five minutes of operating the van. if the van is in drive and you are holding pressure on the brakes for an extended period of time (extra long stop lights), the following will happen. the engine will increase in rpms and jolt forward until you get enough pressure on the brakes to hold it at a stop. if you put it in neutral or park, it will continue to move forward if you let up on the brakes. the only way to get the van out of the situation is to shut it off. once you restart it, everything is fine. by pressure on the brakes, i mean you better push the pedal to the floor or you will be moving! i am not sure if my wife could hold it long enough to get it turned off. the first event happened in stop and go traffic at a congested intersection. i almost rear ended the car in front of me. the second event happened when i was the first vehicle at a stop light. when it jolted forward i was in the intersection. luckily i was not hit by another car. my question is, what can be done about this problem? my wife will no longer drive the van because she is scared of it. the problem will happen again. hopefully it will not cause an accident, but eventually will. so i would like to resolve the issue before it becomes a bigger problem. the van has also had other electrical abnormalities. *nm

 Continuing problem with power rear sliding doors. non-operational on drivers side and opening by itself on the passenger side. also, does not retract when closing if there is an object in the way as stated in owners manual. happened after 1 year warranty expired. feel quality should be better than 1 year especially since the power doors were a big selling point with the vehicle. one door was fixed within the 1st year, but 3 or 4 months after that we had problems with the other door and now we have it with both doors. we will leave the minivan in the mall parking lot and return with one of the doors open. it also opens automatically, at times, when we close one of the front doors. *jb

 Our 2003 ford windstar began experiencing intermittent electrical failures. on may 27, after driving normally, we stopped for about 30 minutes. then the van stalled several times on a short trip. after another 10 minute stop, it operated normally again. several times during the next week, although the car did not stall, the power to the steering and brakes went out. we had an appointment with our local ford dealer to service the van on june 7. however, on june 6 the power systems failed, causing the car to crash into a road side mailbox. no personal injuries occured. nothing was done to correct the failure. at our expense, ford would have had someone look at the vehicle to see if they could determine the exact cause of the accident. we choose to deal with our insurance company instead. the car was totaled and repossessed by state farm insurance.

 We own a 2003 ford windstar. our instrument panel has gone haywire. the tachometer stopped working, it is completely off the scal. the speedometer does not work. sometimes it registers that you are doing 50mph when the vehicle is not moving, and then will not register any speed when you are moving. you cannot determine what your speed is at any given time. my vehicle is beginning it's third week in the at the dealership. i was told that the parts were being held at the border in mexico. i have also been told that the part is on a national backorder. at this point the dealership has determined that i need a new instrument cluster, which again, is at the mexican border, in customs, or so says the dealership.

 Sliding side doors worked intermittently. told nothing wrong. one stopped working. cost close to $400 dollars and took all day. said it was an electricians nightmare. the very next day the other door quite working. we have no children, so do not use door in excess. this is more than coincidence. the first one needed a new plate or something like that. they said it would be $1000 if the motor goes. *jb

 We purchased the 2003 ford windstar in october of 2003. since that time, the van has been in and out of the shop 5 times because of a loud screeching in the power steering, interior lights flickering on and off (which they told me that they couldn't find a reason for that and that i should just turn the interior lights off so that it dosen't happen), and a thumping in the front end when the wheels are turned sharply. they told me that i should bring the van to the shop whenever any of these things happen since they couldn't figure out what was causing these problems and i have done that. i am currently driving a loaner car from the dealership because the van is back in the shop. i called ford motor company and filed a complaint with them. i need to know why this is happening and what can be done to fix this van.

 While driving vehicle stalled intermittently. vehicle was towed to the dealership, and dealership could not find any problem, and told consumer to come and pick up the vehicle. however, vehicle stalled while pulling out of the dealership. then. dealership indicated that the computer chip was bad and replaced it. three week later, upon starting the vehicle , the engine turned over, and vehicle stalled. vehicle is currently at the dealership. but, dealership could not identify what was causing the vehicle to stall, but suggested that several parts should be replaced. *ak

 Vehicle is a ford windstar limited 2003 minivan. the advance trac system came on during normal operation and on dry payment and under normal circumstances. the vehicle was not spinning and i was driving about 25 mph. the vehicle pulled to the left into the oncoming traffic and then slowed to a stop on its own. there was a terrible noise as if the front suspension was being torn apart. i drove the vehicle to the side of the road and turned off the advance trac system. after testing the transmission and i proceeded to my destination. when i was a few hundred feet from my home i turned the advance trac system back on and it repeated the same scenario. i then parked the vehicle in my driveway and call a towed truck for delivery to the dealership where i purchased the vehicle. *jb

 Tl*the contact owns a 2003 ford windstar. while en route to new york and driving 60 mph, the door locks did not function and were not programmed. when the contact activated the cruise control, the abs, door lights, and emergency brake lights illuminated. halfway to her destination, she had to stop at a repair shop and pay for them to inspect the vehicle so that she could continue driving. the mechanic checked the brake line and pads and informed her that the vehicle was functional. the battery was also repaired. within 2-3 weeks, the same lights illuminated again. the vehicle has not been taken to the dealer. the current mileage was 55,394 and failure mileage was approximately 53,200. updated 07/29/08 *bf the consumer also state the vehicle had an oil leak in the oil pan near the oil gasket. the low tire pressure light illuminated. the consumer was informed that the new battery was causing electrical problems they were experiencing. updated 07/29/08

 2003 ford windstar - problem began in october, 2006. vehicle wouldn't start; therefore, we purchased a new battery. same problem occurred - wouldn't start on it's own, had to be jump started each time to drive. has had three separate repair appointments to which they could not find any problem. the vehicle was the same to them - had to jump start. have had all diagnostics, etc. completed with no results. have filed a complaint with consumer affairs also. filed complaint with ford manufacturer, dearborn, mi, as of today. *jb
