 Abs light and red brake light is on, was told it will eventually shut down the electrical system. i had my brakes done at ford dealership and soon after that the lights appeared. i took it back to dealership and was told it was a sensor switch that needed to eventually be replaced and it would cost around $2000.00. i don't have that kind of money. was doing some research and found out that that has occured in a lot of windstars like mine and wondered why it hasn't been recalled? are they waiting for us to get in a serious accident before anything is done? would like feedback on this please, also my interior lights keep flashing on and off like a strobe light...is this part of the electrical problem due to faulty sensor switch? i don't understand why i have to pay out of pocket for something that is a problem with all the ford winstars like the one i own, if ford is aware of this problem and why was i not contacted on this?

 My abs/brake lights have been coming on while driving. lean codes p0171 and p0174 are showing. also electrical system, mainly locks have become inconsistent. when using remote to open locks, sometimes a door lock will not open on driver or passenger side. also, interior lights sometimes dont shut off when supposed too.

 After going about 4 miles after starting up van, abs light comes on, occasionally the red brake light will come on too, speedometer goes crazy (up and down) and inside lights flicker at random. seems to be some sort of electrical issue and/or brake issues.

 Brake and abs warning lights come on after several miles. repair shop says, computer indicates abs controller failure, but once codes have been cleared, computer no longer indicated problem. however, a few days later, brake and abs warning lights come on again, and computer again indicates abs controller failure. and on and on.

 This vehicle has had abs control unit problems since it was three years old in 2006. the condition being described is not to be confused with a previous windstar recall involving a leaking brake fluid pressure switch (nhtsa action #ea08021). the first occurrence was in the spring of 2006 (one month or a few thousand miles after warranty expiration) when i was about 200 miles from home on a trip driving up interstate 91 in ma in the rain. glanced down at dash display and saw both the brake system warning and abs system warning lights on. i stopped to check the brake fluid. when the car was turned off and restarted, the warning lights turned off. that was 6 years ago and the problem continued to progress to an extremely predictable pattern. in warm weather, (over 40 degrees f), the abs system will not function and the warning lights are on. when winter comes, the warning lights go away and the abs works normally. i was told by dealer that it would be a $700 repair. since the system worked in the winter (when i need the abs the most) and had spent a lot of money on several other engineering defects of this car, i have lived with the problem. it was mostly an annoyance. having done some research though, i have found that there are many other windstars with identical symptoms and they center on a defect of the abs module design. after the module has been cycled thermally for hundreds of times in service (heating, cooling, heating, cooling, etc.) there are solder connections on the pcb that are no longer reliable and become intermittently connected. it basically is an electrical or mechanical engineering 101 topic known as tce (thermal coefficient of expansion) mismatch. my concern now is that the failure is progressively getting worse and extending further in to the cold weather period. any design issue with a brake system or component is a serious safety issue. *tr

 Starting this year (2012), you can not get an inspection sticker in new hampshire if the abs light is on. approximately 3 years ago the brake and abs light would periodically light up on the dashboard. shortly after the lights appeared, the brakes would make a horrible squealing and grinding noise. i took it into the mechanic and he said there was nothing wrong with the brakes. about 6 months later, the brake and abs light was permanently on. in late march of 2012 i brought the van in for new front brakes but he was unable to shut off the brake and abs lights. after the brakes were installed the squealing and grinding noise became permanent. when i took it back to the mechanic he said the brakes were fine. so i took it to another mechanic in june of 2012 and he replaced the rear brakes along with rear drums, oscillators, wheel cylinder and brake fluid. this mechanic was able to shut off the brake and abs light, (he said the code was c1185-abs) which was a good thing because he said nh now required the abs brakes to be working in order to receive an inspection sticker. however it only lasted about 2 days and the lights came back on along with the squealing and grinding noises. in july of 2012 i took the van back to the mechanic that did the rear brakes to get my new hampshire inspection sticker. he looked at the brakes again but could not find anything wrong with them. he connected it to the computer and it came up with the same code (c1185-abs) but he was unable to clear it. therefore, legally i was not able to get my nh state inspection sticker. he did recommend a new abs pump but i have not done that yet. *tr

 Gas guage doesn't read correctly. all gages stops working while driving. abs and tcs stopped working correctly in 2008. lights have been on warning of them not working. drivers side passanger door will not work correctly. check advance track warning light stays on. this has been checked, but light stays on. rpm guage stays at maximum. often while driving, it feels as if we have the emergency break on. we have to change tires often. when i apply the breaks the vehicle will either not stop, or makes a grinding sound before it does. i have had the breaks checked and the break pads are fine.

 Where to start? almost seem like to many problems to list. we will start with the constant draining and replacement of the battery. new battery every few months. thinking this issue may have to do with the fact that the interior lights go on and off at random unexplained times. sometimes remaining on once the vehicle is off and all doors are completely closed. problem with abs and brake light coming on at randoms times in addition tp the checl charging system light. sometimes they come on and off but if they remain on cause the car to hesitate or just quit on you. i have 3 kids and am terrified for our safety everytime we are in this vehicle. i have finally had enough and am filing a complaint since i have read from numerous sources that i am one of thousands and thousands having this same issue. please consider the safety of the drivers of these vehicles and subsequently any innocent motorist or pedestrian who may become injured from these safety issues. thank you.

 Abs and brake warning lights are lit on dash. dealer says that the abs ecu has failed and that the antilock brakes will not work until this is replaced. at the same service visit the dealer found that the cruise control deactivation switch was leaking brake fluid and had failed and needed to be replaced due to a fire hazard caused by leaking brake fluid. the cruise control deactivation switch is connected directly to the brake master cylinder and the cable from the switch connects directly to the abs ecu, when they showed me the defective switch before replacing it i observed brake fluid running down the switch cable to the abs ecu. i feel there is a direct relation to brake fluid draining on to the abs ecu and its subsequent failure. this is a sealed electronic module that should not fail during the life of the vehicle. the dealer does not see it that way of course. *tr

 Just another day of driving down the street on the bumpy road. when i finally pass the construction area to the newly paved road to come to a stop at the light, car started to skid lockd up the front wheel. whole van shack. then the abs and brake light came on. it was a life or death experiance for me! now the abs and brake light lid up on the regular bases. help!!

 Owner of 03 ford windstar. problem notice on the 2nd day of owning the car back in july 2010. after parked the car on driveway, noticed the parking brake light on. soon after, the abs light came on. took the car in for a total service of oil, coolant, brake, tranny fulid change. and had the abs light checked up. the technician imformed me about the abs ecm board could be bad. without any other vehicle, i had to drive it to airport right after the auto shop. on the way to airport, the abs and brake light came on again. causeing me taking my eyes off the road, trying to release the hand brake, while driving 65mph on highway swerve from lane to lane. it was very scary! i had to focus on wether the brake light had to do with actual brake, release accel pedal, no noticeable deceleration. checked the 101 and 102 fuse, both good. so i'm pretty sure the abs ecm circuit board had to do with it. today the abs and parking brake continues to come on and stay on. every now and then it doesn't light on. please help me and many others who are facing the same problems!!

 The abs brake system does not function as designed by ford. the issue is caused by heat in the abs (anti-lock brake system) ecm (electronic control module) (2c219) module causing expansion of a large aluminum plate (heat sink) in the ecm which is attached to the ecm main circuit board at all points. the expansion occurs when the unit gets warm especially in the summer months and causes intermittent electrical connection in the unit because the fragile board is being stretched and malformed. the code most commonly scanned is code c1185. there is a yellow abs brake light lite on the dash. when this light is on, the system has failed and the abs does not work.

 The abs and brake light have been on in my car intermittently for almost as long as i have owned the car. the ford dealer was unable to find any problems even though the light remains on. i have had to replace 3 sets of wheel bearings in the car and now the power steering unit is about to go out and the rack is leaking. the vehicle only has 78,000 miles on it. i work at home so i do not drive to work so the mileage is low for a vehicle this age. the vehicle is also rusting and i keep it parked in my garage unless it is being driven. the passenger side window only rolls down occasionally. in conclusion: i have been driving for 41 years and i have never replaced wheel bearings or power steering in any vehicle, let alone 3 sets of wheel bearings and a power steering unit. the costs of these repairs will total over 2000 dollars with no resolve of the brake issue or window problem.

 Intermittant failure of abs module causing red brake light and orange abs light to come on and loss of abs function. this seams to happen more often in hot weather. sometimes the abs can be turned back on by shutting off the vehicle and restarting. also rear power sliding doors have intermittant problem to where they will not fully unlock. door will partially open, then get stuck, so that you have to manually push the rear of the door shut in order to attempt to get the door to properly open. worried thaat doors will not open in case of accident.

 The abs and brake lights had simultaneously been coming on intermittently since sometime in 2008 (a 5-year-old vehicle), occurring with greater frequency as time went on. however, since about march 2011 they now come on every day, usually within 2 minutes of starting the vehicle. there were no accidents or damage leading up to this failure--the problem is inherent in the module. after about the first year of intermittent failure i had a ford dealership technician diagnose the problem; he told me it was due to a bad ecm for the abs (which i already suspected, having done some prior research); we had a conversation about it concerning the aluminum heat sink plate; he told me it was a bad design, it should've never been designed that way. in may 2011, after the warning lights were coming on daily, i had some other service work done at a ford dealership; in speaking with the service representative i asked about the abs and brake lights, he told me the abs ecm was bad, that many of them go bad like that because it's a bad design and he had in fact just replaced one the week before for a customer--it was $1,400. these same modules were used on earlier model years of the windstar, and all model years using this module have had failures. when the module is not functioning, the anti-lock brake system- does not engage. when the system fails, this can lead to unexpected wheel lock-up and uncontrolled sliding, increased braking distances, and greater risk of injury accident. the vehicle is equipped with abs, and as a safety feature it must not fail--just like seatbelts, airbags and tmps. with the system failing daily now, i fear this coming winter the vehicle will not respond as expected when braking on snow-covered roads. with 2 ford employees telling me this module is a bad design, with the relatively low part cost for the module (actual cost, not marked-up), considering the factor of safety at stake, this should be repaired under a recall, the same as any safety system.

 As i was driving from portsmouth nh to somersworth nh i noticed that the speedometer stopped working,the odometer had nothing but lines, no numbers, the overdrive light started blinking and the abs and brake lights came on. i also noted that smoke has been coming from under the hood when i stop at a light or stop sign. these symptoms match what has been recorded on line as follows, the brake pressure differential deactivation switch (scds) (2b264) located under the master cylinder (behind the air filter) over time develops a leak. this causes a short and a fuse trip, fuse #10 if the engine is on. this leak also causes brake fluid to wick down two wires to the abs brake module (2c219). the fluid accumulates on the (always on) power connectors for the abs brake system which are powered by fuses 101 and 102 and are both 40 amp. the fluid attacts moisture, road salt and leads to a fire when the fluid and moisture act as conductor between the hot leads and ground. this switch has been the subject of other ford recalls, just not the windstar van yet. below is a picture of the switch in question. notice the fluid that leaked on the part below it. this switch will cause cruise control problems, speedometer, odometer and abs brake system problems. i will not allow other family members to operate this vehicle and it appears that the ford motor company will not fix this issue even though there was a recall for this exact issue, recall #09s09 because they indicate that my vehicle is not covered under this recall. the recall states clearly that this issue can cause a vehicle fire with or without the vehicle running.

 This has been happening since we bought the car, although the incident date i have submitted is this past week. the abs light and the brake light come on intermittently, but continually. the brakes pads have needed to be changed every 9-12 months. often it ends up being the disc that needs to be replaced because when the problem starts, the mechanic looks at the pads and they are fine; then a few weeks later the discs are ruined. now it has been only 6 months since the pads were replaced and they need replacing again. this is not normal. the problem begins by the abs and brake lights coming on more regularly. then the braking distance suddenly increases. as a result, the car does not have good control and i don't feel safe. we are constantly dealing with this problem and i have had enough. it is not safe.

 Our 2003 ford windstar has been having mechanical failures for about 3 years. we have heard a loud grinding noise from the rear passeners side of the car that neither our local mechanic nor ford could fix. we replaced shocks and most recently the tire rods on 9/24/10. we have had numerous electronical bugs inclluding abs lights flashing on and off for 2 years requiring multiple fuse changes and electrical testing. our transmission was replaced in 2009 at 59,000 miles. the power locks on the passenger side door and rear passenger doors do not open remotely or with power locks, only key or manual lifting. needless to say, although we have not had any person injuries, we have spent a fortune to keep this car running in what we thought was safe manner.

 Vehicle readied for extended road trip -- all fluid levels checked, motor oil changed, tire pressure, etc. normal driving does not reveal failure. the failure is the yellow abs light and red brake light illuminate but the braking system (including abs) continues to function without any noticeable degradation. this failure appears to occur after an extended period of highway driving, ie. 3+ hours. after the initial failure, the yellow and red lights will both illuminate intermittently, some trips at the beginning others by the end (these are local and not extended). when the lights are illuminated (intermittently), they are both on for the entire trip -- just some trips they are on and others they are not. brake fluid levels are normal and there appears to be no adverse affects of the braking system operation. however, if there is an actual failure, it cannot be distinguished from this apparent malfunction. nothing has been done so far to correct this issue for the simple reason the vehicle is out of its warranty period and i cannot afford to have a vehicle repair bill since there is no guarantee ford will make this right. this has not caused any accident but could potentially if left unchecked. i am leaving the possibility of visiting the local ford dealer to question them about it but am reducing my use of the vehicle until i am able.

 Since we got our 2003 ford windstar new in december, 2002, we have always had an issue with constantly needing to fill the brake fluid. the ford dealership said they couldn't find anything wrong. in feb, 2008 our abs and brake light came on. took it to a firestone repair shop, they fixed and akjusted the brakes and they said it was a problem with the brake sensor and that there was nothing wrong with the brakes when they were finished, just the light was on and we needed to replace the sensor. as it was extremely costly and they told us there was nothing further wrong with the brakes, we choose not to replace it. in june 2008 our cruise control stopped working. we again took it in and they could not figure out what was wrong. two weeks ago, august, 2009, we had all new brakes put on. just yesterday, august 21, 2009, our brake fluid was almost empty. we took it back to the place we had the brakes put on, and they just filled the brake fluid and said there was an air bubble. upon driving home from the repair shop, we noticed that our speedometer and odometer had stopped working and the overdrive light was now flashing. so, we have the following warning lights on our control panel: abs, brake, overdrive; and the following items not working: abs, speedometer, odometer, overdrive; and a continually disappearing brake fluid problem. don't actually know if the abs works or not. *tr

 I own a 2003 ford windstar that about 80 percent of the time displays the abs and brake warning lights on the instrument panel. the problem was diagnosed (for $100) at a local ford dealer as a defective abs ecu, which costs approximately $750.00. this problem has been recurring since the vehicle passed the 50,000-mile mark, and even though i bought the vehicle used, it had a ford exp warranty to 60,000 miles. the dealer and the ford rep i contacted both said this problem was not covered by the warranty. further research on the internet has revealed that this is a very common problem on these vehicles that may be caused by a leaking pressure switch at the master cylinder reservoir which wicks brake fluid down to the ecu, creating a possible short circuit and chance for a fire. others suggest that the ecus fail because of delamination of the main circuit board due to incompatible expansion and contraction rates of the materials used. the failure of the ecu appears to stem, in either case, from design flaws. the abs is rendered inoperative in both cases, creating an unacceptable safety hazard in these 4200-lb. family vehicles. *tr

 Ever since spring 2006, our 2003 ford windstar has had an intermittent problem with the abs system where the abs warning light on the dash will illuminate. the service brake warning light will also illuminate even though it is functioning normally. at first this was very alarming but no leak or problem was found with the hydraulic system as the fluid level was correct and the pedal is firm. all the abs wheel sensors have been checked for continuity, their dc resistance falls in the acceptable range, and the connectors appear to be sound. i currently have lived with the problem for a couple years and discovered that thousands of other windstar owners are reporting exactly similar failure symptoms with their vehicles. a commonly reported cause is the abs control unit which i currently can not afford to replace at a cost of $700 or more. a windstar owner who has had the time to investigate this outlines a condition he has observed, where there is a thermal coefficient of expansion mismatch between an aluminum plate and an fr4 (fiberglass/copper) circuit board inside the module. it can be seen at http://www.fordwindstarrecall.info/#problem2. this person's symptoms mirror mine exactly. i am an electrical design engineer in the aerospace industry and can tell you from first hand experience that if you laminate fr4 to aluminum and then repeatable temp cycle it, you will experience future stress failures. this is an example of poor engineering. in the case of the windstar, the part will operate for approximately the warranty period and then begin to fail intermittently. i hope that my entry into this form will help make this widespread problem known. *tr

 Abs and brake warning lights are lit on dash. dealer says that the abs ecu has failed and that the antilock brakes will not work until this is replaced. at the same service visit the dealer found that the cruise control deactivation switch was leaking brake fluid and had failed and needed to be replaced due to a fire hazard caused by leaking brake fluid. the cruise control deactivation switch is connected directly to the brake master cylinder and the cable from the switch connects directly to the abs ecu, when they showed me the defective switch before replacing it i observed brake fluid running down the switch cable to the abs ecu. i feel there is a direct relation to brake fluid draining on to the abs ecu and its subsequent failure. this is a sealed electronic module that should not fail during the life of the vehicle. the dealer does not see it that way of course. *tr

 Both the abs light and the emergency brake light come on in my 2003 ford windstar once the vehicle gets warmed up. i have conducted extensive research after having a mechanic give me the code that the van is throwing (c1185) and found the following: the brake pressure differential deactivation switch (2b264) located under the master cylinder (behind the air filter) over time develops a leak. this causes a short and a fuse trip, fuse #10. this leak causes brake fluid to wick down two wires to the abs brake module (2c219). the fluid accumulates on the power connectors for the abs brake system which are powered by fuses 101 and 102 and are both 40 amp. the fluid attracts moisture, road salt and leads to a fire when the fluid and moisture act as conductor between the hot leads and ground. this switch has been the subject of other ford recalls, just not the windstar van yet. below is a picture of the switch in question. notice the fluid that leaked on the part below it. this switch will cause cruise control problems, speedometer, odometer and abs brake system problems. the issue of the abs brake light is critical in that the abs brake system does not function as designed by ford. the issue is caused by heat in the abs (anti-lock brake system) ecm (electronic control module) (2c219) module causing expansion of a large aluminum plate (heat sink) in the ecm which is attached to the ecm main circuit board at all points. the expansion occurs when the unit gets warm especially in the summer months and causes intermittent electrical connection in the unit because the fragile board is being stretched and malformed. the code most commonly scanned by professional mechanics is code c1185. seen by us owners as a yellow abs brake light. *tr

 Abs and brake warning lights intermittently go on and off for no apparent reason. it only happens when the engine is warm, or it is hot outside. no problems on cold days. brakes appear to work fine. there also appears to be some leaking from the master cylinder, which continues to cause a short with the #10 fuse inside the cabin, causing the speedometer, odometer, transmission control, etc to stop functioning. *tr

 My wife was in the process of parking her 2003 ford windstar in a parking lot. as she went to apply the brakes, the pedal went down to the level of the gas pedal causing her foot to engage both the brake and the accelerator at the same time. the car lurched forward and she hit a post (thankfully not a person). probably did about a $1000 in damage. the reason i am writing is that this is the second time this has happened. the first time was about a month after we bought the vehicle. the same type of situation in a parking lot. at that time i called the ford dealer where we bought the car and inquired if there had been any bulletins about such a problem. i was told no. now my wife could have been at fault but i believe there is a real problem with the brake system as i have experienced the same situation myself. when letting off the gas pedal at low speed and then touching the brake pedal, there feels like a loss of brake pressure momentarily. what then happens is that the brake pedal depresses to the level of the accelerator pedal and the driver then engages both brake and accelerator at the same time. instead of stopping, the car lurches forward because the acceleration overrides the soft (temporary) brake pedal pressure. i'm thinking there is a problem with the brake system pressure at idle when the car is moving. hence the pedal depresses further than usual and the side of the driver's foot then also pushes the accelerator down in addition to the brake pedal. the fact that this happened when the car was new and still happens today makes me think it is a engineering problem coupled with a design problem. the pedals may also be too close together which increases the likelihood of this problem happening. note: the car's brakes work fine otherwise and we do normal service on the vehicle. *jb

 The brake pedal and the gas pedal are too close together. owner took vehicle to the dealership, who had recognized the problem, but told the owner that there was nothing they could do about it. *ak *ph *nlm

 The accelerator pedal and brake pedal are too close. when pushing the brake pedal somehow the accelerator is pushed, causing the vehicle to accelerate. once, caused a collision, where consumer's vehicle hit a parked vehicle in a parking lot. *ak

 Our 2003 ford windstar began experiencing intermittent electrical failures. on may 27, after driving normally, we stopped for about 30 minutes. then the van stalled several times on a short trip. after another 10 minute stop, it operated normally again. several times during the next week, although the car did not stall, the power to the steering and brakes went out. we had an appointment with our local ford dealer to service the van on june 7. however, on june 6 the power systems failed, causing the car to crash into a road side mailbox. no personal injuries occured. nothing was done to correct the failure. at our expense, ford would have had someone look at the vehicle to see if they could determine the exact cause of the accident. we choose to deal with our insurance company instead. the car was totaled and repossessed by state farm insurance.

 I own a ford windstar '03. starting in may 2007, at about 45,600 miles, my brake light and abs light are illuminated. the code read by the mechanic from the computer is c1185. nearly every time i use the car since, the lights come on within a few minutes of turning on the ignition. *tr

 Abs and brake warning lights are lit on dash. dealer says that the abs ecu has failed and that the antilock brakes will not work until this is replaced. at the same service visit the dealer found that the cruise control deactivation switch was leaking brake fluid and had failed and needed to be replaced due to a fire hazard caused by leaking brake fluid. the cruise control deactivation switch is connected directly to the brake master cylinder and the cable from the switch connects directly to the abs ecu, when they showed me the defective switch before replacing it i observed brake fluid running down the switch cable to the abs ecu. i feel there is a direct relation to brake fluid draining on to the abs ecu and its subsequent failure. this is a sealed electronic module that should not fail during the life of the vehicle. the dealer does not see it that way of course. *tr
